Nice guy, but incoherent lectures
He is my hero!
Funny in a weird way... but easy
he's so funny and his class is really easy and i learned a lot.
really excellent class, but really weird man, ands he constantly late

odd guy...obsessed with silence of the lambs....i didn't like the way he formatted the tests
He is incrediblt intelligent, and knows all sorts of random details about the lives of artists. Really involves the class, encouraging dibate. Occasionally goes off on bizarre tangents, but they don't last long.
i love this class, that's why i took it both semesters. he has a very weird sense of humor, but it makes the class VERY fun. he tells you straight up what the test is going to be like, so if you study what he tells you, you will get a good grade.
Dreiss is wonderful. You'll love him, trust me.
I LOVED this class. I actually learned alot and he was 1/2 the reason. very odd, but a great guy. He almost convinced me to double major in Art His. I'm taking his 115 class for fun b/c I liked 114 soo much.
If you can memorize pictures and a few terms, there's no excuse for not getting an A. Dreiss is hiarious too...makes the oddest commments at the oddest times.
dreiss for president! he is a beautiful genious! his class is the best you will ever have!! savor it! his energy and love of art is contagious.
Very odd, very cool, an A is guaranteed, and you'll enjoy yourself if you like art
Driess is the best. He's weird and likes to listen to john denver in class. Also brings his dog to tests. Lectures are kinda boring though.

He's a very entertaining man & appears to be an absent minded prof. He knows his stuff & can get excited over a brush stroke. Take his class b/c it'll be fun & an easy grade.
Dreiss doesn't lecture well. I never went to class and still got an A. He's a great guy, hilarious, goes on tangents a lot.
Driess is great. He puts the complete outline for his tests and the final on-line. Lectures are interesting and he make little jokes throughout. Class is not difficult.
Dreiss rocks the kazba- he is easy but also teachees very well. Great jokes; and great ways of telling stories behind the art pieces.
One of the funniest professors I've ever had.Lectures are very interesting.Pretends to really take us to art museums..i love it!
commenting as a testament to his greatness/hot-ness. took every class i could with him and suggest everyone to do the same. if someone needs a good reason, all i need to say is NOW FRIDAY. plus, its more entertaining and way hipper than not being there.
Driess is the coolest ever. Not an art major, but still got a great broad overview from his class. I would highly recommend it.
Class is pretty interesting, and Dr. Dreiss is a little strange but he is funny sometimes. Only problem is that he doesn't really understand Catholicism and a lot of the stuff he says could be construed as prejudiced against the church. I got an A.
not liking art, i now enjoy it after dreiss' class. he keeps things fun and light. gives great study guides that will help you get an A. would take classes with him in the future. has a teddy bear quality, you just want to hug him
I hear he works out downtown and you can tell! He's a great teacher. I never liked Art, thought it was soo boring. He made me do a 180! I love the class, so enjoyable. He's a great guy. The tests are very hard if you don't bother to memorize the names, etc
Great lecturer. Had him for intro ARt History , and he totally made me fall in love with it. Quirky - thinks he's becoming a genius by watching Friends, adores Hannibal and cries over the Prodigal Son. Makes class very fun and amusing while still learning
he's HOTT!
such an amazing, humorous lecture...i get so much out of his classes...i would take him for all art history classes if i could...such a funny, smart and cool guy... in his essays--get a general organization, and put all factual evidence...put in very l
funniest man alive. class is enjoyable and his tests are very simple and to the point.
He was very easy and VERY ENTERTAINING. He makes the tests pretty easy if you can just memorize. There's no point to doing the readings so don't. It's easy, and he's hilarious--TAKE THIS CLASS!
Really enjoyed this class. I have always wanted to know about art and he is very knowledgable and funny. Loves art and is very passionate which is contagious. It is a fun way to learn.
Very entertaining lecture... he loves the Matrix movies and loves art. Take him!
Prof. Dreiss is the most entertaining teacher at UMC. He made my summer relaxed and rewarding. He is very witty and smart. I love his sense of humor. I once asked him if he knew how funny he was -- he replied "of course, are you kidding me."
Loved his art history class... I definitely recommend taking Dreiss' classes, he's a great guy!
Very easy class- just memorize the paintings and maps. Improvised rants about his life were quality minutes of nap time. Knows his art and makes class not completely boring. Take it for a goal requirement.
Amazing teacher. He manages to make everything funny and relaxed. He's very clear when it comes to his tests, so you know exactly what is expected with no tricks. He doesn't focus on the workload as much as he does the quality of work understood and learned in depth. Take him for everything!!

rambles on and on to himself about nothing very important and will sometimes spout out a liberal phrase or too.....too libearl for his own good.
The most hilarious professor. ever. He once said "What if the hokey-pokey is what's it's all about?" Take any/every class with him.
Dreiss is a character. He makes class interesting and does tend to ramble and go on tangents, but he knows what he is talking about. His ramblings on his "new interests" give good and creative insight. Very intelligent and knows a lot about art. take all his classes.
His tests were pretty hard. I think he makes them harder each semeter. He's a funny guy, actually hysterical. But if you can't memorize information easily, don't take the class.
Dr. Dreiss was definitely unique, and so were his comments. You don't really learn that much from his class and he isn't very clear about tests either. I would not recommend him if you are serious about art history.
superb in every way!
He is a funny guy and laid back about attendance, however, it is in your best interest to go to class. He covers the material well and adds humor to serious topics, which makes the class very enjoyable. I recommend it.
Oh my God. The class may be boring to some, but I happen to think Dreiss is freaking hysterical. The little comments he made and just his general demeanor were highly entertaining. You have to have a sense of humor about it or he just seems like a crazy/high man. 3 tests, 1 paper. Lots of memorization, but it’s a pretty easy class. I enjoyed it.
Very amusing! I took him @ 8 AM and I still managed to stay awake. Great class for a gen ed. 3 tests, 1 paper...lots of memorization, but still pretty easy. The man is histerical. He borderlines on funny/insane most days and I swear he never combs his hair. Does anyone else think her looks like Fonzi? lol. Take Him!!!
dreiss is nice
i was very excited to take this class but it was actually the biggest waste of my time and money so far. first off, do not buy the book as we never so much as referred to it. the midterm was pretty hard and he grades arbitrarily, however the final was literally "write about which artists you like and why". do NOT take this class if you're a majo
he read william blake's "the lamb" to his jack russell terrier as an example of a performance piece. he also broke the speakers in melchers 108 because he plays music insanely loud. enough said.
why is that person down therrre hatin'? dreiss is the beesknees. recognize. peace out. word to your moms.
Incredibly easy. Lots of memorization, but it gets you an easy A. At first you'll think he's weird, but he ends up being really entertaining and funny. He likes to talk to you about his current interests and use art as a way to philosophize life and its problems. Well worth the time. You don't even have to go to class, just read the book.
I took Dreiss 3 times...West Art 1 and 2 and Mod Arch. Sure it's a lot of memorization, but the information and his lectures are priceless. Where else will the professor tell you that he lets his dog pick the essay questions, certain artists are ****s and druggies, and all of his other crazy stories. You can skip class, but why would you?
This class was awesome (especially bc I had no prior knowledge/interest). The tests are incredibly easy-he gives you a study guide that covers the entire test. Dreiss has a very quirky sense of humor & makes class fun. I would highly recommend this class-I just wish I had taken it earlier bc I would have considered double majoring!
Dreiss makes me wish I had double-majored in art history. He wants his students to love art, not drown in the scholarly studies surrounding it. A little odd, but very likeable and prone to saying the kind of strange things that will make you giggle. Tests are a breeze if you follow his study guide. Also, for his age, he's not a bad looking man.
Too easy and you won't learn much. He doesn't particularly care about teaching you any facts he just likes to ramble. He isn't a horrible guy but if you want to go to graduate school with any knowledge of Neoclassical to modern art spend a lot of time reading the book.
I took both intros and 350 with Dreiss and loved every minute of it! His bizarre sense of humor and hysterical anecdotes made every class fun. He really knows his stuff, especially modern art.
He is a very strange man, but he is very entertaining. He reminds me a lot of Woody Allen. I took the class over the summer and it was a breeze. He provides review sheets prior to exams with everything you need to know. So long as you can memorize a few pieces of art in the text, you're good to go.
you get out what you put in with Dreiss' classes, and that's how it is in the real world. People don't take him seriously enough! Since graduating, he's the professor I miss the most!
Well disguised genius is often overlooked and misunderstood. By far one of the most broadly knowledgable ARTH professors I've been in class with.
So entertaining, says some of the strangest yet funniest things. He likes to ramble a lot so going to class sometimes may seen pointless. Two midterms, a final, and a paper. Just follow his study guides and the tests will be a breeze.
So easy. He rambles a lot, and has very strong liberal beliefs which often sidetrack him and can sometimes be offensive to conservatives. Gives reviews for every test with all the info he expects you to know... Super easy paper. Good to take as a gen. ed.
EASY. He is very nice, great gen ed course. Reviews given before each test so know exactly what to study. Just read in book, study for essay questions. One paper to do for class. Don't have to show up for class but go just to hear him ramble.
I've taken three Art History classes with Professor Dreiss... so far. He has his quirks, but is generally a kind spirit with a passion for art, and the effect art has on the mind. He has an intellectual charm, wit and humor that is guaranteed to make his lectures worth attending.
He tells you exactly which pieces you need to know and what you need to know about them. I took it as an easy gen ed class, but it has helped me to declare a major in art history. Great class, great guy.
After I read these ratings, i thought his class would be a breeze--NOT TRUE! Going to class is miserable because he goes off on tangents about random, irrelevant things. He doesn't seem very prepared for class and doesn't care/take things seriously. Bc he doesn't teach it well, you have read the book & learn it on your own before the test.
Driess is such a funny dude. He knows his stuff about modern art and he's a total character. I've had several long conversations with him about his neuroplasticity and art theories, which are pretty neat. Talk to him if you get the chance!
I LOVED Prof. Dreiss! He's so passionate about his subject and very knowledgeable! I learned so much this semester and became more interested in art because of him. You could skip every class and still get an A, but you should go anyways because he's hilarious to listen to! Tests are VERY easy if you study. Study guides for everything on blackboard
Ignore the negative comments. Dreiss is amazing. His class is so entertaining. The essay is fun, the tests are easy if you actually spend time studying! I spent around 6 hours the night before just memorizing the pieces that he gives you on the study guide. For the test essay (he gives you the pieces): read the book's explanation! it helps so much!
Dreiss is the most brilliant professor at UMW. TAKE HIS CLASSES!
I have taken roughly 5 classes with Professor Dreiss and they have all been wonderful experiences. I don't understand the negative comments. He is incredibly knowledgeable about a wealth of subjects and approaches. I think he is the most thought-provoking insightful teacher in the department(which is saying a lot bc they are all good)
Dreiss is awesome! First, he's a really nice guy, and his classes are really interesting. I'm so glad I took art history with him, his class really made me appreciate art and architecture! His exams aren't impossible but you have to do the work if you want the A. He is a fair guy and his exams are straight forward, he makes alot of jokes, which make class fun but sometimes its too early in the morning to really appreciate them. Overall: I really enjoyed his class and definitely recommend him!
Dreiss was a great teacher to have for Western Art History II. It was obvious he was very passionate about his work, and I enjoyed discussing art history with him outside of class as well. He tried hard to get the entire class involved in discussions. His class is easy - if you show up to every class.
easy professor- but most go to class. exams are simple just take notes of the things he says....
Very easy class. Don't even really need to go to class but he's an interesting guy so you should anyways. His exams are fairly straightforward as he tells you exactly what you need to know.
I absolutely love Dreiss. I've had him for ARTH 115, 350, and 351. He's so adorable and he makes the funniest jokes. He really loves art history and he has made me love it too. You do have to put effort into his tests to do well, but he's very fair and straightforward. I'll say it again, I love this man.
I love this class! I had such great memories, liking going to Melchers gallery and writing a 3 page report on one of the paintings there. He will keep you interested in class. Very nice professor as well.
He's so nice! His class in interesting and you can tell he is passionate for Art History. Study for the tests and you will do well, he doesn't demand much. Definitely take his class
DREISS IS AMAZING. He is seriously my favorite professor I have ever had. He's a little absentminded but he is so funny and interesting. I recommend taking a class with him even if you are not an art history major. He's the best!
Dreiss is probably my favorite teacher so far. Knows his stuff and tells you everything you'll need to know for his exams. Use his study guide and you'll get an A.
Probably my favorite professor here at UMW. He's extremely nice and very passionate about his subject. I liked the class a lot.
The BEST teacher at UMW and my favorite. He will honestly make you fall in love with art history. If you're looking for a really good art history teacher I would recommend him over all of the teachers.
This class is straight up memorization of pieces of art throughout history. I found it difficult to memorize over 60 works+definitions for exams. Attendance is not mandatory, I never went, you dont have to go. Everything is provided for the exams and papers beforehand (study guide). Gets the gen ed out of the way
Dreiss is a really nice professor who knows his stuff. Attendance is not mandatory, he tells you what will be on the tests, and tells interesting/odd stories.
Very good professor. He really cares about the subject and wants students to succeed.
Go to class. His lectures can be boring if you aren't interested in art but if you show up for class and take notes you can get an A. I made powerpoints to help me study the name and artists of certain works. Make sure to know key terms and how to spell them cause there are no word banks. Three tests and one paper. I really enjoyed this course.
Such an awesome professor! Even though I am not majoring in Art History I literally took every single class that he taught on UMW . He has a lot of funny witty comments sometimes and I love how he points out the details that would've been easily missed! All of his classes seems to be made of 3 exams and one project and a couple more!
Sure he rambles a bit but his insights help bring humanity to the objective world of art history. He mad eye love art more and keeps it fun. I used the textbook for reference images to make quizlets for the sections and there is a portion of the test thats on info from your lecture notes/textbook!
Professor Dreiss is the shiiit. If I could take all my art history courses with him I would. He's clear about what images you'll need to know, he even makes a list for you to study. You don't even need the book, just use the study guide he makes for you. One short paper and it's all about your opinion on an art piece of your choice. Easy class!
Lectures are kinda boring but as long as you take good notes this class will be really easy. He gives a list of which terms/artworks will be on the test so you know exactly what to study. Your grade is based off of 3 tests and 1 (easy) paper. He knows a lot of people are only there for the gen ed so nothing about the class is too difficult
Hes a great professor, super passionate about art history. Students respect him and treat him as a friend. You have to research a lot. Keep up with it and it wont be that bad.
Outstanding professor, VERY passionate about art history. Attendance is mandatory, but 6 unexcused absences are permitted. 3 exams (30% each) - nothing too hard but studying is a must and a journal entry (10%). Show up to class, he normally covers exam material word for word. Super willing to work with you, very accommodating and genuine.
Prof Dreiss is a sweet and genuine guy, you can tell he loves art and gives significance to every piece he talks about. His tests are very MEMORIZATION heavy. You must memorize the artist's named, title, and period of each piece on the study guide. Flashcards are a must here.
Dreiss is way more chill in his upper level classes. The course consisted of two papers and a project, both which had flexible but straightforward questions. He doesn't take attendance for upper levels (but does for 114 and 115) but you'll miss a lot if you don't go because he doesn't post slides. He's the only guy I'll ever take ARTH classes with!
Took his 5 week Online Summer Class. He does a PowerPoint/VoiceThread each module that you need to take detailed notes of. You take 3 exams that are open note. Make Quizlets of the terms along the way and you will do ok. Keep up with the work every day and ask questions when you need help. Do the discussions because they are a participation grade.
I took his online class this summer, and I will say be ready for a lot of lectures and a lot of reading. He obviously wants you to pass, willing to work with students on grades. A decent professor and I would take another class with him again.
Took this class online for the summer. Lecture heavy and you must participate in the discussions. Driess is a nice professor, really knows his stuff, and I like that he introduces interesting material to his class. If you have the chance to take a class with him be sure to do so.
Dr. Dreiss is such a caring and passionate teacher. This class is a lot if you do not listen and take notes in class, and study for exams. It is graded by few things but if you study and put in the effort, you will succeed.
Professor Dreiss is nice and super organized! His lectures are somewhat boring, but you need to pay attention to his voicethreads. There were three exams, discussions, and an art journal that make up your grade. Not hard to get an A if you study. Would take him again!
Professor Dreiss is very chill honestly. His lectures are kinda boring and he gets off topic a lot BUT he is very passionate about art and I like and respect that a lot about him. He seems to be very understanding and he really doesn't try to make it hard for students. As long as you study for the tests and do the discussion then you'll be okay.
Dreiss is very chill and tries to make the course easy for himself and the students. Everything discussed in class, plus extras, is uploaded to Canvas. There is a textbook but I only used it to study for the exams. Every class is lecture w/occasional drawing time. There is a project + paper, final paper, midterm paper, and some discussion posts.
Wonderful class! I took this course over the summer so it was all online on Canvas. Each module consisted of 1-3 voicethread lectures and other articles or videos for additional information. Some days the modules felt long and repetitive w/ video after video but the course was fast. Assignments: 2 exams, 10ish discussion boards, and art journals.
Another fun class from Professor Dreiss! I took this class over the summer so it was all online through Canvas! Each module consisted of voicethread lectures, additional articles and videos about the topic, and occasionally a discussion board. I struggled a bit with what notes to take/memorizing each period of art, I found myself bored or confused.
Honestly an amazing class. You really learn how to look at art and how to understand it. Dreiss is an amazing professor. The class just had attendance and the tests graded. He makes pretty funny jokes as well. If you have any questions about how to take notes in his class, he'll be more than happy to help you at.
Prof. Dreiss (SO FAR) has been a wonderful professor. Although it has only been an online class, I have been able to talk to him if need be and the class hasn't been too difficult. Would highly recommend!
Dr. Dreiss is an insightful art history professor with a wealth of knowledge. While his lectures are content heavy, they are engaging and filled with interesting insights. He effectively connects historical context with artworks, enhancing our understanding. His passion for the subject shines through. I recommend his class!
History of Western Art II with Professor Dreiss is an easy class if you attend and pay attention. Though his lecture style is monotone, his passion for the subject is clear. Attendance is part of your grade but not heavily weighted. Overall, it's a manageable course with insightful content on Western art history. Very easy A, all tests online!
Professor Dreiss is a nice guy, however, there are some things that I didn't like about this course. The grading criteria for the class is nowhere in the syllabus or on canvas, and he lacks in communication. His rubric for the term project didn't make a lot of sense. Other than that, the class was very interesting.
Professor Dreiss is super passionate about art history. The class is memorization-heavy but manageable if you take good notes and use flashcards. I found Unstuck ai and ChatGPT helpful for studying.
Dreiss was very passionate about art history and wants students to gain an appreciation for art. Class was lecture only and quite boring but made class fun by showing architecture drone videos and other clips in class. Didn't need the textbook, and he uploaded video lectures of all class content. Will def take more classes with him!
