brilliant, funny and a very good explainer of difficult material.
Joe rules, id take his class over any other
He is an incredibly lucid lecturer, who does not lecture from notes, but off the top of his head. He has great knowledge nd turns his students onto science. the best science class at COD.
Incredibly smart and very energetic, but grades are what matters. Very diffecult tests and expects you to know way too much stuff he never explained. I wouldnt recommend unless you already know a lot about minerals
This guy rules! He is one of the best teachers I have ever had!
WAY WAY too much work for an intro class. I am not a major, just trying to fulfill a requirement. He has a nasty temper and expects too much independent learning. Not a good teacher. Avoid.
HARD for non-sci types! English mjrs beware! Too much info to rem. 1st test midterm! Didnt realize how much chemistry was in geology, course descr said earthquakes and plate techtonics, thats was only 1/3 of it. Know your chemical breakdown of minerals!
He would come into class everyday 10 min late.He lectured everyday. We were suppossed to have 6 or more tests and I think we had at the most 4.We were suposssed to have a lab every Friday and we only did 2.This class is very simple. No homework, just tests.
true, occasionally late, but never 10 mins. The professors knowledge of his subject is so intensive, its scary. He is a great teacher, his test are hard but he is fair. His labs are really great and help to understand the material bett It's worth the wait
Its true he was about 10 minutes late everyday, but he is a VERY good teacher and very knowledgeable when it comes to earth science. He explains things very well and does things to make what could be a borring class very interesting. I would reccomend!
Joe is great. Take his summer classes. He is a great teacher and knows more about the earth and geology than anyone. Any class with Joe Filomena will teach you something interesting. Take as many as you can. It always helps to be more educated. A++++
Great teacher, lots of fun and very easy.
very rigorous material, very detail oriented prof who leaves no stones unturned. very bright guy who is a great prof. good dry sense of humor, but slackers beware.
he is best prof. i have taken so far. he throws jocks in between just so students don't get board with subjects. he teaches very clearly. i loved his class. don't need to buy book for his earth sci. 100 class.:)
AWESOME Teacher! He truly loves what he does and knows exactly how the world works, from the outside in! Highly recommended!
Yes, he was late up to 10 min each day and didn't even show up some days w/ no prior notice, but he is a very generous and intelligent professor and will help you as much as he can. Good summer class.
A great teacher. The material was very difficult at time and the exams you really had to study for, but it was worth it. He is a great teacher that explains things well into detail. The mineral exam turned out to be pretty easy as well. I got an A on it an
Was a very helpful and easy teacher. He was late usually but more importantly made the students have the advantage. If the majority of the class didn't understand something, he would hold the tests back. Even better there was barely any hw and very few easy tests. If you actually study you will pass the class with an A like me =)
Coolest teacher I've ever had.

He was so nice BUT material was difficult and so were the tests.
very intelligent, funny and handsome, tests are hard, and subject is very detailed. very meticulous. great prof and fair.
explains things very well but in gory detail!! take good notes or else. hard tests and difficult material. asks good questions to lead you to the answer.
Amazing Teacher!!! really funny, freindly, and so cute. careful girls, you might just fall for him.
Really funny, makes class interesting, takes time to explain, very fair. definitly a cool teacher to have.
He is sooooo cool! Best geology teacher ever! Lots of notes to take and the tests are hard but he's very funny and makes class interesting! If you're going to take ES, take his class!!
You are going to do poorly in his class if you do not have any will to learn. I did extremely well in his class and I definitely recommend taking his class. If you review properly the material he covers you will be absolutely happy with your score.
He'z a nice teacher who teaches with alot of details. His tests ARE hard, u need to have v good note taking habbit. After the first test he will start taking days off without letting you know, so b4 u go to class check out if hez coming or not.i took geology of interior and enjoyed it got a B. its hard but lil fun so i wud say take it and just stud
THE COOLEST TEACHER AT COD!!!!!!!! The class will seem a little hard in the beginning because of all the notes but soon enough you'll become interested in the notes! He is very helpful, very very smart and so funny! The tests are hard but it's all from the notes. That class is GNEISS! (geology joke!) TAKE THE CLASS!
He is a very pleasant guy. Knows a ton of stuff, not just about geology, but he seems to know everything. Little quarky, i think he had a nervous twitch. Will have to spend some time in the lab memorizing rock names. I miss his class!!!!
He is a very nice and understanding teach. PLEASE do NOT buy the book. He even tells you, you wont need it. Take good notes, tests are based off of your notes alone. We had two rock tests to study for, just take pics and study them you'll be fine. If you want to move test back just give him a lame reason, and he will! He's really nice, tests are ha
Joe was a good teacher and was exceptionally excited about rocks and minerals, which was nice considering that I could not care less. His enthusiasm alone held my interest throughout the semester. His tests are based on pure lecture and are extremely difficult. There are two exams on rocks which aren't that hard. Very easygoing but challenging.
Joe was a very good teacher and was always very clear about what would be on the tests. I was not very interested in the subjects, so it was boring at times, but he always tried to make jokes during class to keep things interesting. He is very nice and really cares about his students. I would defintely reccommend taking his class!
Very nice and very funny! I loved his class! He is always late. Do not buy the book. He gives alot of notes and his tests are directly from the notes. His tests are hard if you don't study. We had a few lecture tests and a few rock tests. Study and you will do fine. He is an awesome teacher! I definitely reccoment him!
Superb professor! You will love this class. Take meticulous notes and try not to miss class. The man is a rock star and truly gneiss!
I love this guy. He was so much fun. I dont care about the subject at all, he made me love it. Hes great
This prof loves to teach. He's brilliant, sincere, down to earth and funny as hell. Tests are challenging, take good notes and study hard.
first of all, take the 3 hour class. that way he comes 10-19 minutes late and lets you out an hour early. HARD tests, know your minerals, ask questions. he's unorganized, didn't stick to the syllabus. dont buy the txt or the labbook. i just photocopied the 1 lab we did. i worked hard and got an A. nice guy. not a blowoff class but not impossible
test are not easy, but if you took good notes and study them well that is all you need. He loves his subject and is very knowledgable. He's also very fair, and really funny. he is usually late, and lets you out early.
this is a very very hard professor. for geo 1101 ( a gen ed) you have to memorize 35 minerals and their groups by sight and he tests on it. His tests are very difficult even if you study. He is very nice and will to help but the class is boring and hard
I recommend Joe to any student that is willing to work hard.Joe does not spoon feed his students and you are expected to show up everyday because his lectures are important. He uses a lot of illustrations so if ur a visual learner he's great for you.Buy the lab book..he wrote it!Don't bother spending money on the text book, we never used it.
You can tell he loves the earth sciences, he's an interesting teacher. He tended to go off on stories sometimes and often showed up late or not at all. It was a class based on note taking and visual learning. An excellent class and you will walk away with more than just a few memorized facts.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had at COD. He is really smart and funny, and always willing to help students. Make sure you study for the tests, they make up your entire grade. Very fun, laid back, and comfortable learning environment.
regardless of the class being 2 hours. he is seriously "The" "BEST" teacher you will "EVER" have at COD. his mind, is the textbook. he knows everything, the lecture is everything in his head. He uses no books, no notes, nothing. He's VERY VERY helpful if you're lost in anything. Did a lot of curves and dropped test. no final for our class! WOOT!!!!
This is one of the most boring classes ever, the test is all off the notes so take good notes
Joe is the best teacher ever. He comes in 15 min late every day. you get a break for 15 or 20 in the middle of the class and he usually doesn't keep you the whole time. He is an absolute genius and knows everything there is to know about earth science. He is also really nice and kinda funny.his tests are kinda hard tho but TAKE HIM HES THE BEST!!
THIS GUS IS THE****.. enough said. comes to class late, shows up 45 mins late to the final. wears shorts and an orange shirt to class. fun teacher, knows everything. class is kinda long. and BEWARE, some questions on his tests arent on his study guides. but overall hes the****
This professor is absolutely brilliant, and an excellent teacher. He is very nice, extremely patient, funny and not a snob. He has indepth knowledge of his subject and other sciences. We took a field trip to starved rock which was awesome. Very detail oriented and explains concepts well. He uses no notes its all in his head. Take good notes!!
He is a great teacher with a great personality. He knows eveything about geology, and is always able to explain and help if needed. All his tests are curved and sometimes able to use a sheet of notes, but the tests are pretty difficult. He comes into class late all the time, and missed class at 6 times during the semester. Good all around teacher.
I took Earth Science with Joe and he was very helpful. You need to take really good notes in class. His tests are challenging but not impossible. Joe is always at least 15 mins. late SO TRUE haha... My class went on a fun field trip to Starved Rock for extra credit. I liked this class!
During the summer course yeah he shoued up late everyday but as far as making this crap easy to understand,he does his job well. He also grades EVERY test one letter grade up plus we never once used the text OR lab book. Highly recommend him esp.during the summer-time flew by and the only "lab" was our mineral exam-EASY.
Great teacher..funny guy, and easy going.. he's from new york.. so hes got a cool accent.
Hands down, best teacher I have ever had. His class is difficult, and he gives A LOT of notes, but he is extremely helpful, ridiculously smart, and very funny. First science class I have ever looked forward to. DONT BUY THE BOOK. you wont use it at all. I would recommend his class to everyone. great guy.
Great professor...Helps u with everything...Gives u bunch of extra credits and helps u getting A in every circumstances...Three tests and a lab...easy checker.....Definitely Recommended......
Incredibly smart, very articulate and good sense of humor. explained complex things well and in great detail. test are tough, nice person
I took earth science 1101. The material was extremely difficult but he explained it well. You cant miss class because he covers so much in one day that you will miss way too much. The entire time you are taking notes but his lectures can be funny. If you participate and show up every day he will def help you out. Overall he is extremely nice
Great class, next to no homework besides a few labs. He makes epic jokes and is very knowledgeable. Pay attention and you will learn a ton!
First of all this is one funny guy..he truly is a great professor and definitely knows what he is talking about..take him in the summer he is SOOOOO lenient..he will help you pass no matter what..oh and do yourself a favor and dont waste your money on the textbook....we NEVER used it...overall highly reccomend him!!!!!
Took indipendant class with him. While the class is very hard, he is very reasonable and will help you out if you fall behind. I recommend him.
This class is not easy but if you are in class everyday, do the work, and make friends/study partners you will do just fine. Joe is funny and if you feel you studied hard and didn't get the grade you deserved, he will work with you. He will go over things several times if you ask him to. Best prof I've ever had at COD. Definitely recommend him!!
This class was very challenging and covered alot of stuff. Professor Joe is a dedicated teacher and a very brilliant and caring person. he teaches at a very high level but explains difficult things very well. He is one of the best profs at COD. He's also cute and funny.
He's a very good teacher, I definitely recommended him. Barely any homework, and good curves on the tests. He's a bit confusing, because the material is hard, but he knows what he's talking about, and is always willing to help. He's also very funny, &makes the class alot of fun! :)
Professor joe is a great professor. He is also a real nice guy and a gentleman. the previous rater must have it out for him. The choice of words used were very mean and untrue. signed a female student
I agree with "female student." Previous comment is biased and untrue. I talked to him many times and was treated with respect. He integrated humor into this dull subject. His tests were difficult but he curves it nicely. Very fair. Lectures are extremely boring but still, tests, though very tough, are graded generously. Signed female student #2.
This guy really invests in seeing his students do well. I have some difficult circumstances while taking his class and he went above and beyond to help me finish. I would recommend taking him especially if your not a science major and seeking Gen Eds.
This class is extremely difficult, there are a lot of tests, and you MUST study hard to do well. The lectures are boring and long with A LOT of note taking, but Filomena is very nice and will help you out! He curves the exams and there is no homework!
Mr. Filomena is a VERY nice teacher. He is extremely intelligent. Nearly everything he lectures on is by memory. Be prepared to take a lot of notes. He is willing to help you out and curves tests. No homework. Hard information but not too hard of a class.
He makes a not so interesting subject interesting enough to keep your attention. He is also one of the nicest professors I've ever had. He goes out of his way to make sure students will do well in the class. Overall a very great professor and a great guy.
nice professor and great guy. very helpful. he give a study guide and review with student to make sure student know what is in the exam. he know what he is teaching. very honest. strongly recomend
Very somber but Very kind and down to earth ( haha) guy who really cares about his students. A really brilliant guy.
Super smart man. Very kind and soft spoken. His lectures r very clear and many times funny despite the obvious physical pain he appears to have. Highly recommend u take him
love him. his class may be hard but all you have to do is show up and take notes. im starting to not pay attention cuz im getting lazy but the study guide is everything that is on the test so im not worried. such an amazing teacher and nice guy, definitely recommend him!!
The best professor at cod. I learned so much in his class. He Is also a kind and caring person who really went out of his way to help us. I wish all my professors were as dedicated
Such a great teacher! So helpful. He teaches material good, and knows what he's talking about. If you come to class and take good notes you'll do fine on his test!
He is an excellent professor. Would highly recommend if you need a basic science or you are going into geology. He is very helpful and understanding. He does give study guides and includes exactly what you need to know for that exam. He does lecture, but as long as you attend and participate, you will do well!
Professor Joe is extremely interested in geology and he knows what he is talking about! You should attend class and take good notes for tests and do the few assignments he gives out for points. Very nice man, I would definitely recommend.
Joe is the nicest guy ever! Tests are HARD, I recommend typing out your notes the day you took them because there are A TON. Class is like 3 hours long but he gives you a break and lets you out early. DO NOT BUY THE TEXT BOOK. If you want a book, then get the lab book. Overall, great teacher, hard work, work hard and you'll be fine.
He is a very kind and humble prof who really cares about and enjoys teaching his students. He is an amazing professor and a walking hard drive of knowledge about geology and science and other topics. Very socratic style of teaching and also very funny. The class is long but he makes it fun and I'd take him again.
Professor Filomena is by far the best teacher at COD. He is such a kind man who really cares about his students. lectures are long but he makes them interesting, tests are hard but you always end up doing better than you thought. No homework just a couple harmless labs with groups and the last test is the final. overall, amazing guy and class!!
Prof Filomena is a very nice and helpful guy. He truly cares about his students. This class is not the easiest Geo class at COD (don't be fooled by the class number) but as long as you show up, take good notes and ask questions you will do fine. The tests are kind of hard, but there are study guides for each exam. There's always extra credit too.
Very smart guy! Class is easy and if you work hard and study it should be an easy A
He doesn't have notes for lectures. He writes his points on the board but not all of them. We spent 8 weeks lecturing before the first test. He's not always clear on what is & isn't important to know for test. He does give a study guide which was sorta helpful. No homework or quizzes though. Recommend for an easy science credit.
UNBELIEVABLY SMART GUY WHO REALLY KNOWS HIS STUFF AND HAS INCREDIBLE RECALL ABOUT MANY SCIENCE TOPICS. I LIKED HOW HE INCORPORATED HIS GEOLOGY FIELD WORK INTO THE LECTURES AND LABS. HE ALSO ASKS LEADING QUESTIONS TO GET US TO FIGURE OUT SOLUTIONS ON OUR OWN. HE USES THE BOARD A LOT AND THEN SHOWS PICTURES TO REINFORCE THE IDEAS. A VERY NICE MAN.
Exams are VERY challenging. He knows Geology so well to the point that he's probably over-qualified. He will go out of his way to help students understand the material.
Professor Filomena knows a lot about his field. He's a genius. He just doesn't know how to teach. He's unclear and seems reluctant to answer questions. While I took the introductory Geology course with a lab, the things we were expected to memorize were absolutely brutal. The lectures are long but interesting, just be ready to ask him to repeat.
The Professor is very bright and most excellent lecturer and explains things very well. Very nice and easy to talk with. He is dedicated to making sure students are learning the course work. Lots of note taking as he does a lot of writing on the board and shows really good examples of photographs and diagrams that help add to what he writes down
Mr. Filomena is an awesome professor, he knows what he is talking about and is very into it. He usually hands out 3-10 points of extra credit per test. The tests can be hard, but if you pay attention in class and take notes and study you will do fine. His lectures can be very long but interesting at the same time.
He is a great guy who tries to make the classes as fun as possible. However, his tests are really hard due to his vast knowledge on the field. Gave us a cheat sheet on his tests and sometimes even the things on his study guide were not on there and vise versa.
Dr. Filomena is passionate and it shows in his lectures. The material is not the easiest to comprehend, but Dr. Filomena does an amazing job during lectures that it's not that bad if you attend class and pay attention. If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class for you, but you WILL learn a lot GUARENTEED. ONE OF CODs BEST PROFESSORS!
Very very nice teacher. Friendly, funny and helpful. Easy class but do not get lazy like I did because everyone should be able to pass with an A. Notes are simple and clear. He repeats as much as you need and gives review days b4 tests. I would take him again! One of my favorite teachers. No book or Hw when I took the course .
Crystal clear lectures but in extreme details and depth. I thought the class was taught at a level above and beyond an intro course and he gets into the chemistry aspects of crystals and rocks, which as a Chemistry major I appreciated. He really know his stuff and is there to help you succeed. Not an Easy A and his tests are challenging.
He is a very educated professor in his field, however the tests are tough. He also gives in depth lectures that are explained well, but he is very disorganized which makes it hard to study come test time. He jumps between topics and if he was more organized the class would be a much more enjoyable experience. No homework. Don't need to the textbook
He is very nice to deal with but the course material is sooooo difficult and the tests are next to impossible. If you are a blue card student like me do not take this class it is too advanced and I did not finish it. I took 1140 this term and It is a much easier class if you are special needs. If you are in my boat i recommend 1140 for science c
Textbook is not needed, gives a few extra credit opportunities, take advantage of them! Very knowledgeable in his field, however he often goes into too much unnecessary detail in his lectures. Pay attention in class and the test won't be as hard. He's a fan of having students memorize charts and names so if you don't have good memory don't take him
He is straight up the most dedicated and kindhearted prof at COD. The class is very scientific and he explains difficult ideas in multiple ways. I will never look at the earth the same way because of this class. Definitely knows his material and enthusiastically shared it with us. Although the class is long he makes it very entertaining lol!
One of the best professors at COD. Definitely take him, he is the real deal. His classes could be long and boring sometimes, but if you have good notes, you should be fine. He gives study guides as well. Don't bother buying the textbook, I got an A in this class without a textbook. All you need to do is to pay attention in class.
He is very hilarious professor. I enjoyed his class. Attend every lecture, pay attention in class and study for tests and you will be fine. I got an A pretty easily cause I put some effort.
He makes rocks interesting! That's a real feat for any teacher i think.
He's very sarcastic and cares about his students. His class was very lecture heavy and you do not need to buy the textbook. His tests are kind of tricky but if you pay attention in class and study your notes you will do fine. He is somewhat unorganized with his notes but is very knowledgeable about geology and the earth. A lot of students like him!
One of the best professors ever! He keeps class interesting for non geology majors, and for someone like me (a geology major) the class is still beneficial and not too easy. Tests and lectures are long, but if you pay attention and ask questions you'll do great. I never got lower than a 96% on any test
Lectures are super long but he tells you exactly what you need to know for the test. Take notes and review them. He's a great teacher who will help you if needed and cares for his students. Not a lot of homework, and take advantage of ALL the extra credit! It'll seem hard at first but it's not too bad if you pay attention and look over the slides.
This class was a bit harder than I expected however, he gives extra credit opportunities for every test. He doesn't use the textbook and makes his tests based off of what he says in his lectures so, I would recommend showing up to class as much as you can. He really cares about his students and tries to form connections, all in all an awesome prof.
He was my prof 20 yrs ago. I had him for 3 classes. Since then I earned my Ph.D in geology (U of Toronto). Joe is is a great professor and an excellent geologist who inspired me to pursue geology. His detailed approach to teaching gave me a solid background for most of my 300 and 400 level classes for my B.S. degree. Thank you Joe!
He is a great teacher. He really cares about his job and wants you to succeed. The tests are difficult, even if you show up everyday and take notes, but it is doable. Extra credit on tests helps a lot! I would recommend this class.
His questions on his exams are worded to trick you.
A very challenging class but worth the effort. Great teacher and a very kind and understanding person. Also really funny. I had a lot of fun and learned way more than I expected.
Filomena is a very kind, caring, and intelligent professor. He is passionate about geology and definitely knows how to teach it. However, his class is not an easy A. The exams can be quite challenging, but they are manageable. He does give out extra credit for every module and we barely did any labs!
Awesome professor. Took him for summer school and despite it being 3 hours long we all got through it. Must take good notes, don't need the book. Tests are based off what he says in class. Usually lets out early and gave us breaks. Very caring and knowledgeable in his field. No homework, not many labs. Highly recommend
Had him in spring in m,t,w,th,f at 2pm class. What a great learning experience cause it was a very small class. Wish all my classes were like this. He is a very smart man and has a nice way about him. One of the best profs at cod because he explains things in a clear way.
Its great a science class - He is very nice and super smart - lots of details not just facts - he backs up facts with lots of evidence and details. We did several mega- labs each took a week to complete. Don't wait till last minute to study for tests. study early and often. TAKE GOOD NOTES IN CLASS! Answers all your questions in class - pleasant
TOUGH CLASS! Extremely detailed oriented and can wander around topics. Causes some confusion. Even with immense studying, I struggled. He is a wealth of knowledge though. He really knows his material, it's just how he gets it across. A very interesting class. Does not use the book at all. Study guides don't help w/ all of test, study everything!
He is so kind and respectful to everyone and he knows how to teach. Follow his directions about studying and note taking. He is very clear and concise if you pay attention. will repeat thing if you don't get it. Ask questions and you can get an A in the class. Would take him again but I've graduated. Class is very interesting -learned a lot
Joseph was an awesome professor. Just as long as everyone isn't dosing off, he will make it a fun class. Take good notes and review them. Everything in your notes are worded the same/pretty close on tests.
Amazing professor- very caring, genuine and funny. This class isn't easy, but I definitely did enjoy it! Take good notes, study and do the extra credits and you will do great. And don't just fill out the study guides- actually make notecards and study them!!
Joe is a unique professor in that he is very intelligent yet humble and caring and shows love to all of his students. I learned so much about geology, things I never heard about before. He made the class come alive with his passionate teaching style and broad range of knowledge about a lot of things. I would definitely take him again.
One of my favorite teachers! Although I wasn't excited about taking Geology, he made class fun! He is so funny and really cares for his students. There's no homework, just pay attention in class and take notes. His tests are a little hard even if you study. He offers extra credit and other things. Great teacher!
Geology is not an interesting topic, however, Joe makes a good effort to keep his students engaged. The class is very lecture heavy but if you take good notes and do the study guide, you will be just fine. He is very caring about his students and wants them to succeed. Great professor!
This class was lecture heavy and it's EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to take good notes. The tests are difficult even if you study and most of the questions, from my experience, were taking directly from lectures. However Joe is the kind of professor who genuinely wants you to do well and is passionate about what he teaches. He's understanding and genuine.
PLEASE TAKE GOOD NOTES! He is a University level prof - god knows what he's doing at COD. He has total recall and you can learn so much in his class if you pay attention and ask questions. Exams are doable if you study your notes. He is very genuine and available to students and he asks leading questions so that you can figure things out.
I liked this class because it was small and met everyday at 2 pm and i made a lot of friends because you see people everyday. Joe is a great teacher and he made the class interesting and fun. I learned a lot about the Earth.
I don't understand why his reviews are so high. It's a three hour, lecture heavy class and you better take good notes. You have optional weekly summaries, but you better do those if you want to pass. Oh, and his exams are nearly IMPOSSIBLE! Even if you study, you're lucky to get a low C. This class should not be listed as an introductory course.
Hardest class ever. Get ready to work harder than you've ever worked in a class and hope to get a C. He is an expert at this and he expects you to be so as well. Tests are basically impossible and this should NOT be an intro class. Would not recommend. Also makes you find time out of class to complete tests.
Very difficult course and this professor doesnt quite understand that the material hes been studying his entire life is not something that comes easy to everyone. He expects a lot out of students and expects them to forfeit their time outside of class for testing.
He is a smart professor who cares for his students. He writes everything that is important on the whiteboard and is crystal clear in explaining things and showed lots of visuals. I did what he told us to do which is review the days notes and do the weekly summary questions and I did well on all the exams. Take notes and study them to succeed!
He is very intelligent about many things, he made the class fun, and he will cut you some slack but you better do the work. He is very detailed and explains it all very well. Tests are not as difficult as others have said. If you take good notes, study and ask questions they not that bad. He is one of best professors at COD.
One of my FAVORITE professors that I have had by far. The class is lecture heavy but he breaks it up with breaks throughout the class. The exams can be confusing when it comes to the wording but he gives out study guides prior that has everything you need to know -take good notes/draw pictures and come to class. He truly cares about his students
He's a nice guy. I hold nothing against him. However, his class is extremely hard. There are no assignments to raise your grade; if you're not a test taker like me, then please don't take it. I haven't completed the class yet but I have a D as of currently and I'm so extremely stressed. He expects you to study every little thing. It's too much.
Spends his full 3 hour time slot lecturing. Which can be a bit rough. Very note heavy, and make sure you write down everything on the whiteboard cause he doesn't give out his notes till a few days before the tests. Overall a decent teacher, and nice guy. Just had a lot of content for an intro class people take for gen. ed. requirements
Honest, fair, and kind, knows how teach, and really knows the material. I thought this would be an uninteresting class but it turned out to be my favorite. He works very hard at giving everyone the information to understand the material to succeed, does a lot of board work and gives out weekly summary questions for e.c. One of the best at COD.
Professor Filomena is honestly one of the best science professors I've had so far at COD. He's definitely a Uni level professor teaching at a community college, so expect deep geology info you won't get in other intro classes. Do the weekly summaries, attend every session, and you will pass with a good grade and great understanding of geology.
This class was hard for an intro class but Professor Jo makes it easy with his lectures and explanations. Gives extra credit for every test. There are a couple labs and he makes sure you understand all the material. You want to get a good grade in this class you HAVE to put work in. Definitely not a blow off class.
A bit scattered in his lectures but it starts to make sense after awhile. He builds on previous concepts so it's easy to learn as long as you show up. Very accessible and willing to help. Incredibly knowledgeable on the subject. One of the best teachers I've ever had in my worst subject area - taught me to learn!
Unless you are interested in Geology please do not take this class. I don't know what these other reviews are talking about but he is not a good professor. This man gives the worst lectures, will go on for hours about a subject that does not matter at all and won't be on any tests. The entire 2 hour class is just lectures and it's so disorganized.
The previous commenter is a an awful human being. The poor man's son died in the middle of the semester . Shame on you!!!
His lectures can be fly abit off-topic sometimes, but his strong understanding in his field was clear. Go to lectures and take good notes.
Professor Filomena is an experienced Geologist and is passionate about this class. He gets a bit conservative sometimes! Very protective of his slides in class, can't take pictures. He gives a lot of information and not enough time to take notes. Questions in exams are from this slides - so that's a bit ironic. (Don't make a study group!!)
Professor Joe is a really nice man who cares for the success of his students. I love the way he explains things and he writes it down on the the white board. I never thought a geology class would be this interesting. I recommend him if you want to learn something new and interesting.
Im pretty outnumbered by positive comments here, but I honestly had the hardest time with this class. I do really well with studying and preparing for tests, and that didnt help me at all with this class. Never have I received a C in my college career. Get ready to hear more about politics than geology btw. NOT a good online class professor.
Professor Filomena is an amazing person. I would definitely recommend anyone to take his class. He made everything very interesting and also got to the point of his lesson. He knows how to make lectures fun and not dull. Many of the assignments are very simple and he is very easy with grading.
He is very passionate about geology and you don't get homework, you just have the labs and tests. The labs are easy, but the tests are extremely hard. I'm a straight A student and I've gotten a C/D on all of his tests even with showing up, studying, participating, etc. He curves which somewhat helps but I really struggled just to get a B, good luck
He has some concerning opinions about climate change, but other than that, he's a good professor. I'll admit I was originally a bit apprehensive about him because of that, but he turned out to be a nice guy. Very easy class with very little homework as long as you take notes! He let us bring one sheet of notes to exams, which helped me a ton.
Professor Filomena is a scholar yet he is humble and down to Earth. I loved his lectures and his passion for the subject and other areas of science. He made a 3 hour a day class interesting and imparted kindness and humor into his lecture. I had a fun time and learned a lot.
Filomena is a very amazing and knowledgeable professor. He goes through lectures fast but you can just tell him to slow down. He isn't a harsh grader, he especially gives lenience on the labs. The textbook is just for reference I only opened it once. The only con is that he never gave us his office hours.
Prof. Filomena was very caring throughout the semester. No assignments only a few in person labs and exams. He posts the unit modules as well as a study guide so you dont have to go to class however I would go just bc there are a few hyper random questions on the test that you will only really know if you go to lecture. Overall easy A.
Professor Filomena is very passionate about his job. It is very laid back and an easy class to follow. The only problem I had was that there were very few things that were graded. Tests and labs were the only things graded which can come in handy for some people but completely ruin the grades of others. Other than that he's a great professor
Professor Filomena shows what you want in a professor. He proves that he is passionate about Geology and demonstrates his knowledge by being able to identify the names of everything he showed and drew on the board to help explain his teaching. Even gave us slides and a layout of what to expect on the exam.
A great Professor - Loved his class and trying to fit my schedule to take another of his classes.
Joe genuinely cares about his students. He is straight forward and you know exactly what to expect. He is very lecture heavy, but makes the class enjoyable. He provides all slides, a study guide, and a dedicated day for a review. I am not a science major, but I am glad I took his course and would gladly take another.
Joe is often late, sometimes almost an hour. No homework, only labs and exams, and exams are very hard. Cheating happens during tests because he leaves the room. Teaching is confusing and unorganized. Labs are heavily graded with unclear instructions. Grading points aren't on the syllabus, so you don't know your grade until the end.
He is a very nice and kind person. I would say his exams are challenging but he grades them leniently with a curve. I followed his directions on studying and ended up getting an A. Professor Filomena is a great teacher and he really knows the subject. Work hard and you can get an A pretty easily. That just my opinion.
Fun professor with a lot of real world examples that can turn a lecture into a tangent. This geology professor likes rocks and if you want to do well you should also feel enthusiastic about rocks, he's not an easy grader but put in a little bit of effort and it will go a long way.
