This professor expects for you to walk in class as a linguist. He also has his favorites in class so if he likes you, he'll give you a good grade. If not, GOOD LUCK!!!
This prof. tests through essay only. He tells you to but the biggest blue book and plan on filling it. There are 2 in class essays like this and a take home final. A 3,000 word research paper is also required, as well as a data collection exercise.
If you take good notes and are able to write about the Sally and Wugs example, you will do fine. This teacher loves to read about his lectures so make sure you copy ALL his drawings and examples. All tests are essays. Doesn't give much time to discuss whe
You will actually learn with this professor. Very interesting class, he is very clear in his lectures. ALl tests are in class essays. You also have to do a field work project and a research paper.
I never thought I would enjoy Linguistics, but his class changed my attitude about it. He is very excited about teaching and is very knowledgeable. If you go to class and take good notes, you will be fine. One of the best professors I have ever had.
Joseph is great. As soon as you walk in his class you feel that you are welcome. He does not like to let anyone down so he will add you. He is clear and lets you know that his notes come first and the text is just a back up to review the terms. take him.
very good
AWESOME teacher... he makes the subject very clear to understand. he loves what he teaches makes the class go by a lot faster. show up to class and you'll pass with no problems.
He's very enthusiastic about linguistics and tends to answer his own questions. The class can be boring, but you do learn. Just take good notes and stay awake; he repeats a lot of what he says. Really don't need the book.
Dont take him he is good teachers to some but he is also rascist to others. Beware Take Klein very honest and good teacher.
he is the worst professor ever! his lectures are BORING.. i'm telling you, you're going to fall alsleep! and for his blue book essays, he expects you to fill out the whole thing! if you don't, there goes your grade.
Very difficult class. Each test woul need to FILL a large bluebook. He likes it if you talk about his experiences in tests in addition to the famous examples. Attendance is optional but don't be fooled...lectures are very important!!! Weird grading system, scale of 1-5, 5 =A, 4=A-B...so on. One test influences the grade of the other tests.
****?!! What is that all about? Anyway, he's the best professor I've ever had. Intelligent, challenging & his pedogogy is top notch. His excitement about Linguistics transfers to his students-now I'm excited about linguistics! Take good notes and you won't have to study-he practically pours the knowledge into your head. Love the large glasses.
Okay...if you aren't interested in learning this is the class for you. The tests are based on the ability to memorize his uninteresting lectures, which are sooo... repetitive. You have been forewarned.
His lectures are boring, his test(which are three blue books) are long and boring (you must literally fill the entire blue book). But overall you do not learn anything.
Like others have already mentioned, his lectures are boring and his tests are very long (you must fill up an entire bluebook with essays)...but if you go to class and take good notes you should be able to get an "A" since you are just re-writing your notes onto the bluebook for the tests.
He's great teacher who willing to help you if you are really try. ;)
Great Professor, always nice and helpful!!!
Interesting class but very challenging. Professor is enthusiastic and good at explaining things.
This professor knows his subject matter very well. He is extremely educated in the material he teaches. His work is a little challenging, but he is very fair in grading. You can get an "A" if you take good notes and study them.
Be prepared for long intense lectures!Everything for the exam is based off of lecture notes you take. But his online papers can also help a great deal. I honestly feel that he wants the best for his students and tries to pass everyone with a good grade. This class is an easy B, with alittle time and effort you can get an A easily. Highly recommend!
He is a good teacher, but if you are not good at writing, I suggest you take another instructor.
THIS IS NOT AN EASY CLASS...BUT HE DOES A GOOD JOB THOROUGHLY EXPLAINING THINGS...MUST BRING COFFEE THOUGH, NOT AN INTERACTIVE TYPE OF PROFESSOR. ALL LECTURES!
took him for ling twice (two different classes) and loved him... not an easy class, but interesting lectures. you need to go to class to pass... but his exams are easy beacuse they are straight from lecture!
This is a very challenging class and Galasso may seem like a difficult professor, but he is not, as long as you give reasonable feedback on the papers that are written for this class you will do just fine. Everything that you need to know are in your notes so make sure you go to class everyday and take good notes...I recommend this class
Excellent proffessor. He goes through a lot of material, but as long as you take good notes you are fine. Presents knowledge with personal anicdote that really helps to illustrate concepts. Very fair grader.
This guy is a real jerk. Don't take his English 302 class, you will regret it. His tests run for two days and grades like you are in elementary school ( 5,4,3,2,1, scale). If you are one of his favorites than you will get a good grade, but watch out if your not. His lectures are long and boring, so bring coffee. DON'T TAKE HIM !!
Worst teacher I have ever had. He is not helpful at all and expects you to memorize alot of the material, but then contradicts himself by saying learning is not just memorizing a bunch of data. We have to write a 3000 word essay and single spaced. He is crazy, literaly. My advise don't take him, unless you like torturing yourself.
I think he's a good professor. I really like the way he lectures. I hardly read the book, just went to class everytime and took good notes. His tests are all blue book so you really need to know the info.
Excellent teacher. The lectures were fantastic. Not an easy grader but that is a good thing. Makes great examples to understand point. I wish I had had him for other classes. I would have learned a lot more. Very smart and very hot!
You have to read the material, even though he goes over it in class, pay attention, take lots of good notes, and look at his page once in a while, they'll all help you out during the exams! He's a hard grader, but he just wants to know if you understand the materials presented in class. One major paper due! GOOD LUCK!
He is a great professor. He has a lot of knowledge about the stuff he teaches. Very smart person and has a great sense of humor. Take him and you won't regret it.
The exams are straight from lectures so if you don't show up...you won't know what to write in the blue books. One 3000 word paper, and 3 exams. I liked his lectures and he made things clear with this examples. I am taking him again for Ling 417 this semester, he's great! Take him!
Good professor but his tests are done in an essay format, so if you don't have a good memory, forget it. Great teacher and he has a sense of humor, but takes this subject very seriously and expects the same of his students. Helfpul if you ask him questions after class.
Take him for Eng. 302 and this class will be easy for you!3 essay exams, 1 field experience, 1 research paper. Go to class because his exams are lecture based. I have learned a lot I wish he taught more classes that I have to take!
This is a really nice professor. I really got a lot out of this class. His lectures are fun and intersting. the class can be hard if you don't follow his lectures. its important to go to class everytime because his exams are based on the lectures. I would recommend this professor.
This professor is great. He really cares about students and wants you to understand the subject. He tells you what will be on the tests, which consist of easy essays. I don't think anyone failed in the class I was in. Glad I took him for linguistics since it can often be difficult if you don't have a great and funny professor like Galasso.
He is not the best but you can pass. He gives 3 exams and they take a week to finish. He is boring but if you want a C take him.
He was such a great professor. He made the course easy, he gives you everything that you need to get an A. I am taking another one of his classes. You learn so much, best professor ever.
Very interesting. Attendance is mandatory if you want to get a good grade. His test are straight from his lectures. But lectures, again, are extremely interesting. Makes me want to go to class.
I took Galasso because I heard only the best things about him, but I am so disappointed! He gives no homework which sounds great until u get ur exam back with a terrible grade. He always asks "any questions" but no one ever does because we're all so lost in confusion and boredom. Class could be so much better; do urself a favor & take someone else!
This professor is very nice. He really cares about his students..This class is easy but, there are a lot of works.Very helpful!!
AWESOME teacher... he makes the subject very clear to understand. he loves what he teaches makes the class go by a lot faster. show up to class and you'll pass however you need to study for the exams do the assignment! If you these then you will get an A.
If you took his Eng 302 class and did well, you must take his Ling 417 class. The first half of the semester is just a recap of Eng 302. Mid term, Final, and a small research project. Never used the book, but will help for test prep. All tests are based on his lecture, so take notes, write down everything. Attend. not mand. but will help with tests
awesome--we all loved his class. very caring and very knowledgable. I went to his office hour and he was really nice and helped me prepare for the final. take him!
very easy class. just go because test are based on his lectures. if u take notes during the lectures you will do good.
Galasso is a brilliant professor. He is very articulate and makes all the class material very easy to understand. He is an extremely interesting fellow. I always enjoyed what he had to say about any given topic. A must take for any English major at CSUN!
this teacher is a joke! he wrote his own book, and you cant even understand it because he just tries to sound smart. this guy gave me a headache all semester. please dont take it with him just wait till another semester. today, during the final he told us to ask no questions during the final. thanks ****!
You can tell he loves the sound of his own voice, and sometimes complicates his lesson w/ his extensive and often time unnecessary vocabulary. He is smart, probably a genius, but we get it.. now teach the class like you are at a state university and not Stanford! All in all, not too bad of a class, if you can handle the pretention.
Definitely pretentious. But he knows what he's talking about. Go to the lectures and take plenty of good notes because your grade depends solely on three tests and those three tests are based solely on his lectures. The book (written by him) is hard to read, but can be helpful in reviewing the material he covered in class. COMPLETELY LECTURE BASED.
Brilliant and completely engaging professor. Raises the bar for professors at CSUN. I felt like I was still at UCLA. Excellent experience, eye-opening and enjoyable.
Professor Galasso is amazing. He tells you exactly what will be in the exams. His lectures are fun and he is very flexible with grades. He understands that the class is difficult and only expects you to prove you understand what you have learned. The exams are essay based and he likes a lot of writing.
Prof. Galasso is really great! He always has personal anecdotes that really help you understand and visualize the material at work. He's very interested in the subject and his class allows you to explore your own particular interest in Linguistics. I love the stuff so I got A's on everything, but I know that IPA is super hard for others.
I went into this class hating linguistics and I am leaving this class hating linguistics It has no appeal to me whatsoever and his 3 hour class is just a drag. His tests are hard because there is so much to memorize and if you have a bad memory, then you are screwed. I would recommend not taking him unless you are interested in Linguistics.
"I wrote the book on this stuff" applies to him, he literally wrote the textbook which he will reference frequently but never needs to be read. Very knowledgeable but pompous. Lecture is mandatory and boring. Entire grade based on in-class essays. Politically incorrect, looks down on languages other than English, loves the sound of his own voice.
His voice is not a pleasant thing to listen to for 3 hours. He acts like he doesn't know what's in the book... But he wrote it... Nice man but kind of odd. Easy class over all
Galasso is a wonderful professor. The class is based on three written exams,in which you are required to respond to any of the prompts in any fashion you like. You can mix them, or just write every thought that you’ve learned which pertains to the material. His methodology of teaching and his passion for the subject makes the class enjoyable.
Joseph has great pedagogy towards the classes that he teaches. I absolutely recommend him. Three exams, and a paper are required in his LING417 class. Attending his lectures are not mandatory, but his exams are based off of them; so, attend!
He's somewhat eccentric and a talker. Bit of an oddball, really. I found him to be straight forward and old school. No frivolous hw assignments. And reading is optional. It is a lecture based course. You need to be there and take good notes because you will be reproducing them for the 3 midterm exams. Get clear on the final paper, too.
Galasso is a very enthusiastic teacher. However his examples on the board are not very clear and often jumbled. Looking back at your notes to study is often confusing due to this. His book is very confusing and completely different from the lectures, which is odd since he wrote it. He is not a horrible professor, but not the greatest.
Really long boring lectures, he's way too excited about Lingustics. Your entire grade is based on 3 written exams. He gives you a prompt and if you just spit back out exactly what he said in the lecture it's an easy A. He repeats examples over and over again so they end up stuck in your head anyways. You don't need to buy the book.
Professor Galasso is very passionate and knowledgeable about linguistics, but he's not clear during lectures. He's pretty confusing and doesn't offer much help outside of class. The best thing to do is to take notes as best as you can and regurgitate them during the tests. All in all, he's not the worst professor but he isn't the best either.
He's in his own little world. Those who understand him great. Those who don't: memorize the stuff in your notes and spit them back to him on the 3 tests. Don't ask questions on the day of the test; he doesn't like it. Book was not that clear either, but if you're trying to come up with more stuff to memorize for the test, use it as reference.
Great guy but he moves fast so if you don't ask questions you can get confused. 3-4 written exams, 1 paper. Exams are based on lecture. Don't buy the book you'll never use it. Exams are based on how data is applied so use lots of examples. He really wants everyone to pass.
First time taking Professor Galasso. He is very passionate about the subject and shows it every time during lecture. He makes sure students are understanding the material and are therefore prepared for all the exams as well as for the term paper. Make sure you attend so you're not lost. Would definitely take his class again.
He's all over the place and extremely unorganized.
I really enjoyed this class. I would recommend this teacher
Dr. Galasso is very smart and knowledgeable. He gives a lot of ideas to think about and do further reading. He is a type of professor that one would like to have in a graduate program. The format of his lectures is different from the accepted norm, but that is what makes them interesting.
Obsessed with Chomsky to the point that he seems to have delusions of being a close personal friend. Regurgitate points about Chomsky for easy A on all of your exams. How this is a graduate-level class, I don't know. Feels like a course for freshmen.
He is so unorganized, he can't even lecture about a single topic. The entire class is based on 4 essays. 3 are "exams" that you take home and write an essay about anything you want. The 4th is resubmitting one of your "exam" essays as a research paper (what's the point?) No need to attend class, just read the book, teach yourself and write paper.
Unorganized is an understatement for this professor. I hated his class. All he does is ramble for 30 minutes before starting the lecture. He uses the same examples over & over again. He is by far the WORST professor I have ever taken. I don't recommend him at all. He's not helpful at all. AVOID taking his class!
His class involves just 3 exams, which are in-class essays, and a research paper, but as long as you pay attention & take notes to what he lectures, then you're good to go! He says that his classes are like 'graduate level', but I still don't understand how b/c he is an easy grader when it comes down to the essays.
Dr. Gallaso is a great professor, knowledgeable, experienced and interesting. So much to learn from him. I would definitely get another class with him. Thank you for everything.
Great class, very informative and interesting.
Not the best professor, he isn't always exactly clear and he only lectures and write on the board, doesn't provide electronic resources to help you succeed. All his books are in the library.
Definitely one of the most unique professors I have had at CSUN. Eccentric, imaginative, and all over the place- but extremely knowledgeable. I sincerely enjoyed his lectures and his enthusiasm about linguistics. Take good notes and you'll do fine on the the exams and final paper. Old school lectures. Take him if you want something different!
Great professor, kind of all over the place with lectures and the way he presents the material but once I gathered my notes it was easy to formulate the exam because of his repetitiveness. Just take really good notes and gather some ideas from the book and the exam and paper will be easy.
He goes way off topic and just rambles. Horrible class.
Basically take good notes and you'll be fine. There's 3 in class exams (written) based on a topic that he discusses in class. He does let you use your notes for the exam! its open book. He does recommend to buy the book I've read the first chapter not much help. And a final paper. Pretty easy class just pay attention.
If you took a shot every time this man said Chomsky, your liver would give out before the semester ended. He needs to choose words and tone more carefully when speaking about dialects such as Chicano English and AAVE. If this is your first LING class, I suggest starting with a different professor.
Wow can't explain how amazing Joseph is ! I love love him , took him for 3 ling. Classes . Amazing lectures very clear grading very caring and easy going ! One of the best best professors ! Will miss him sooo much
I have mixed feelings about this professor. His writing for his lectures are hard to read, he is unclear on the specific things he wants in the course. Class grade is based on three greenbook tests and one (easy) paper. Sometimes things he says can be misconstrued as offensive. DONT BUY THE BOOK! Its on his academia page. I wasted money on the book
Definitely go to class so you have notes on his lectures (no slides). Don't buy the book, you can borrow it from the library. Sit up front so you can read his notes, and don't lag behind so you understand what he writes on the board. Honestly, you can skip many classes (he repeats the same thing for the first few weeks). It's easy if you understand
Professor Galasso has an "old school" type of teaching in the sense that he lectures, uses the whiteboard, and does not use powerpoint slides. That's a good thing because he is great at what he does. He re-emphasizes concepts already introduced to reapply them in a different way so that students can "see the connections." I highly recommend him!
I'm not sure how I feel about this professor. I found him to be funny in his own way, and the class is sort of interesting. I took this prior to phonetics which was helpful. The whole class is based off of three written exams and a paper. The paper was pretty easy. He bumps up your grade if you improve on the next exam. I would take him again.
I truly love Professor Galasso and I hope to take more classes with him! He's very intellectual and a very caring person. He's passionate about Linguistics and you can see it on his lectures. He explains everything in a very nice way and does not take attendance. I wish more Professors could be like him!
Professor Galasso loves to talk so get ready! He tends to repeat a lot of material. There are 3 greenbook tests and one easy short paper due. His notes are extremely messy and hard to follow sometimes. But overall compared to other Eng classes this course is manageable!
Loved this course. Graded on 3 in class exams and a paper. Will round up grade every time you improve. Friendly and patient and will take time after class to answer questions. Don't miss class unless you can get the notes from someone cuz he doesn't post anything. Find the book online through academia site. Would take again!
Galasso was definitely one of a kind. He has a quirky sense of humor. His classes are strictly lecture based so be ready to take notes. He repeats himself quite a bit. He doesn't take attendance at all and lets us take control of our education and what we get out of the class. Class is graded on 3 exams and a typed paper. Interesting content.
Dont take him if you cant memorize. Unsympathetic and says you cant fake it on your education when it comes to knowing this. Real pompous and rude
Galasso is so very kind, passionate, and intelligent. He is immensely interested in his students' learning, and wants this information to stick with you through life. His lectures are very lively, and he gives everything you need for tests. He doesn't assign homework, but if you don't read, you won't pass. You must show up, read, & take notes.
His teaching style is incredible, he is very informed, and wants to pass his knowledge down to his students. He is super present, and you can talk to him if you need help. His lectures have so much energy, and if you read the chapter, he helps you connect the dots. You will learn so much! Take good notes, read the book, and pay attention!
He's one of those special professors that will stick with you for a lifetime. He knows how to teach, and he knows his subject matter impeccably. You will learn, and it will not just be temporary memorization. Make sure to read the text, take great notes, and ask if you need help. He is more than happy to help! So very nice, intelligent, and caring!
He is really nice, and class is interesting and graded on a couple essays. Attendance is not mandatory, but you have to go because he won't post lectures online for you to review later (however his online papers are useful). Essays are easy as you're simply rewriting down what he repeatively explained in lectures into a green book.
Best professor in CSUN's ling dept! He gave me a strong foundation in linguistics. He not only inspired me to think creatively about the field, but about the nature of human consciousness. I gained more from his class than all my other ling classes combined. He doesn't just throw reading at you, he teaches. I'll remember him the rest of my life.
This class is completely online. He sends an email once a week to the THREE courses he teaches. You read lecture notes and that's it. Your grade consists of three essays you will do. No rubric or clear guidelines for the essays. They are very open ended. The essay is rated 1-5. This class is too open ended and not clear enough for me.
Dr. Galasso is a wonderful and passionate professor. He has been very understanding and flexible during the pandemic. His class is based on 3 essays - no classwork or homework, which can make it hard for students to improve grades. You will need to work hard on the essays to do well in this class. I would not recommend if you do not like writing.
He sends out a weekly of readings be from the lecture or textbook. Grade is based on 3 essays, sometimes you feel lost so try to read minimum 5-7 pages a day. He grades essays on a curve so if you continue to try, ask ?s, and improve youll get a great grade. The topics for essays are kinda generic so you have wiggle room to write them your way.
I loved taking Professor! He was literally the most intelligent and overall super easy to retain the information needed to write his papers. No final this semester from him just 3-4 papers which pertain to each section of class. He uses Academia which for me was hard to navigate but overall super easy!!! Not having a final was LITERALLY amazing!!
Prof. Galasso is a great teacher, but he has a tendency to go on tangents meant to be examples of what he is referring to, though it just made me feel more lost. The love he has for linguistics is undeniable and shined through in his lectured, though his teaching style is so erratic that it's hard to follow along. Be prepared to read the textbook!
Half the time I did not know what part of his lecture was actually needed for class, or what was a random rant he was having. I had no idea where each lecture led to. Completely lost and overwhelmed.
I took Professor Galasso for my first semester at CSUN. He is very kind and knowledgeable. We had three big assignments which I got A's on all 3. He talks and writes on the chalkboard. Make sure to copy his notes and you will do just fine in his class. I would definitely take him again. His book was also very helpful for his class. He is kind.
We only had to write two papers, which were open notes/book, and take one closed notes exam. The professor is very inspirational and clearly loves what he does. I would definitely recommend attending class because it is hard to catch up and understand those concepts. Overall, very knowledgeable and really great professor!
