horrible professor, terrible grading system....DO NOT TAKE HIM
likes to make class hard, just for the sake of being hard... would not recommend
No Comments
mean as hell
tells students they are stupid idiots right in class
Didn't understand O-Chem in August, Still don't understand it in January.
Do not take this professor. Enough said.
A lot of people hate Grabowski's class- I thought it was very challenging and demanding but fair. If you were having trouble with things and went to him he would help you- I do admit I got a lower grade than I wanted in there, but he IS a good professor!
A demanding teacher yes, but not a poor teacher. Raises standards for pitt which i must say need to be done. Can't disagree that the class is hard as **** and i hate powerpoint. take honors. its better (less people more 1 on 1)
Excellent Prof, best chem teacher there is. Be sure to take honors, just do the work. very demanding, but very fair and available. also take Siska.
Genuinely interested in teaching and helping students understand the subject rather than just memorize reactions. Has high standards, but is that really a crime? Don't get too upset about the take-homes. Everyone fails a few,but it works out in the
Nice guy, helpful. Learning ochem is hard no matter what and you will think he is going to fail the entire class but he'll actually be very generous with final grades (honors only). Very dedicated to helping you learn but is by no means easy. You'll learn things that will confuse the grad students.
The best professor on campus! I learned more about how to think in one week than my friends did in one semester in their Orgo classes. I always aced my friend's orgo exams while they rarely could start mine. Take him if you want a quality education; take another prof if you only want a grade.
Dr. G is the man. He is one of the best profs I've had here at Pitt. His courses are very challenging and demanding, but it is worth it for the amount you will learn and benefit from the course. He's a very nice guy and very helpful. I would definitely recommend his honors classes...
The book is crap. Joe G is def. the man. Though intimidating and sometimes a bit arrogant, he is still friendly and very willing to help. Class is very hard; never studied harder before. But you learn a lot. Get on his good side, read a different textbook or talk to Joe G a lot, and you will love Joe G's and his class!
Not a nice guy. Not understanding, no (very little) partial credit, hard tests, doesn't answer questions because "you should already know from organic 1", just really blah in general. Take any other professor because even if they're hard too, i'm sure they're at least nice.
If you are taking this class be ready for unfair questions from all sides.
Listen, organic chemistry is not an easy subject and none of the teachers are going to make it easy. You have to work very hard no matter what, but Dr. Grabowski tells you exactly what homework problems to do for each chapter and which ones to ignore. His tests are not all that bad if you prepared well- I mean cmon a 68% is still a B...
OChem is never going to be easy, but the way Dr. G teaches narrows the achievement of even the best students. You can get a 50% and still pass, but getting that 50 might be impossible. He's also shady when it comes to exams, EC, hw (don't hand it in 1 second late unless you're a star student), and never gives the average. shady.
Dr. Grabowski is extremely difficult. Unless you are a genius, drop him immediately or prepare to cry yourself to sleep for a semester!
Whoever said Joe G "narrows the success of the best students" wasn't kidding...the take homes and clicker questions are cake, but the in class exams will destroy the graduate school hopes of even the highest calibre students.
You won't find a more organized teacher. He'll ask you to think on exams - but isn't that the point of college. You'll learn a lot in his class and you'll always know your standing because of his absolute grading scale - which completely eliminates student-student competition.
Great lecture notes, but moves too quickly through lectures. He skims the material, but you really have to teach it to yourself on your own time. Recitation is useless, because he gives a diabolical worksheet and no hints or answers, and minimal help. The midterms are pretty harsh, but the final is easy enough that it can be handled.
Make no mistake, he is a competant professor. Lectures are clear and, though the tests are ridiculous, grades are often salvagable. However, it can be very off putting to work with such an arrogant man. He is not likeable. You will feel mocked. Either find a prof you can like, or decide what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Your choice.
Professor Grabowski is an Immensely difficult teacher. Even the most gifted students can work themselves to no end only to end up short. His tests are exceptionally hard, though with clickers and take homes a B is usually within reach. My advice: drop him immediately!
Equally as challenging as in Ochem 1. Take homes are a bit easier but still require large amounts of work over the weekends. Will cover 1 chapter in a 50 minute lecture. Clear powerpoints but are not useful for the exams. You will work harder than any other orgo class at pitt, and final grade does not reflect all the work you did compared to others
Most difficult professor I have ever taken. I'm a B average student and I have worked harder in this class than any other class. GREAT at explaining things in class but flies through lectures. But the tests will leave you feeling like your hard work has gotten you nowhere. Definitely would not recommend him to anyone.
JoeG is a really good professor if you want to really learn and understand the material. He grades fairly, has homework grades (in the take home tests) and lets you drop one bad test grade. He also averages about 30 EC a semester. I'd recommend him if you were really interested in ochem. And I'd recommend doing all the problems the book.
Very, very difficult professor. Tests are obscenely difficult for the most gifted students. Flies through lectures and clicker questions without explaining well. Take home tests take several hours to do every week. Find a different section.
Nice guy but terrible teacher. He is physically incapable of breaking any problem down. He also expects you to memorize a lot and everything ever discussed. If you ask a question, expect to be verbally harassed with an answer that only confuses you more. Unless organic chemistry is your burning passion find a new teacher.
His class is definitely a lot harder compared to other ochem1 teachers, but it's do-able if you're willing to put the time and effort into it. I wouldn't take him if you had the option of taking another teacher, though. But I feel like I learned alot. Plus, he gives you about 30 points extracredit (provided you come to lectures) and homework points
If you want to work really hard for a C and do poorly in your other classes then take this class. Exams are very difficult. The final was laughable it was so hard. When i asked the TA for help he didnt even know, he had to go ask grabowski for help. just dont take it.
He's a nice guy aside from the teaching o-chem part. He assigns optional A, B and C level problems to practice, and his exams rival the tough C ones. In short, his class is excruciatingly hard, but if you go to class and get your extra credit points from the clickers you'll get at least a B.
Dr. Grabowski teaches O-Chem, it isn't going to be easy. Yes his tests are difficult but they are extremely predictable- look at the previous years tests. He allows you to drop a midterm and gives ~30 extra credit points. His class is not hard to do well in if you put in the time. I would definitely take Dr. Grabowski again.
J Grab Them is definitely attractive but he is not fun to learn from. He is dismissive to questions asked and he skims over very important details. The book doesn't even compare to the level he expects you to know. He might be some eye candy during class, but he is a total heartbreaker later.
worked my butt off in this class and ended up with a C. doesn't like questions during lecture, has no TA, and can be rude during office hours. i spent most of the semester in the fishbowl for help. i would study and do well on the take-home exams but poorly on the hourly exams. avoid. i hear to take bandik or even nelson.
He's a very hard teacher but it's possible to succeed. Take home tests every week are difficult but boost your grade. He gives about 30 pts extra credit and you can drop a midterm and have final count for double. Go to lecture, read book, study old tests, do ALL his suggested problems and you'll be fine.
This is by far the hardest ochem 1 professor at PITT. He gives extremely difficult tests. However, he does curve the grading scale and gives extra credit. Thus if you get at least a 70 on all the tests, you will most likey get at least a B in the class. Studying is a must in his class!
DONT EVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. RIDICULOUSLY HARD. TAKE ANYONE BUT HIM!!!!!
If u want a challenge, then take him. If not, then stay away.
Dr. G is a very tough teacher but his class is possible. If you do the expected problems and do the problems from his old exams you could get a good grade. He is a clear teacher and his exams are very similar to his old exams. Although the exams are hard, they are predictable.
Extremely organized; best web site with lots of resources; does expect one to understand the material - you can not do well in his course by surface memorization alone; absolute grading scale; encourages collaborations; extremely approachable; gives extra credit and allows you to drop an exam if your final is better. I recommend him.
Extremely organized; best web site with lots of resources; does expect one to understand the material - you can not do well in his course by surface memorization alone; absolute grading scale; encourages collaborations; extremely approachable; gives extra credit and allows you to drop an exam if your final is better. I recommend him.
Here's the deal: If you plan on doing all his recommended problems, old tests, and going to the fishbowl for take home test help, then you'll get no lower than a 'B'( most likely some sort of A). He sets up his class so if you work hard, you'll succeed. If you think you don't need to go to class or do the work, you'll absolutely fail.
Dr. Grabowski is a great professor. He is extremely helpful, especially at his office hours. For this class, you need to study. It is organic chemistry, after all. He is tougher than the other professors but, he will prepare you for anything. There is also a ton of extra credit. I would definitely recommend him to anyone.
lock yourself in a closet while you eat some sure good apple pie and call your gradma, capture, eliminate, and rearrange the nonexistant periodic table, and then try to figure out a problem on his exam... then, when you fail, bang your head against the wall until it no longer hurts... then continue... got an A in ochem1 with him, ochem2... AVOID
His exams are really hard and he holds the class to a very high standard. He speaks fast and covers a lot of material per lecture. He really prepares students for grad. school or the mcat. His final grading curve is pretty generous.
There are alot of comments on this page ripping this guy to shreds and whatnot. If you are taking Ochem 2 at Pitt it is going to be hard - you are going to work your butt off. Personally I didn't mind the guy, he's very knowledgeable on the topic and really puts a lot of time in. 80% required to get an A, which is very doable.
Grabowski was an easy A in my opinion. He gives over 30pts extra credit, there are three 100pt exams (one a weekly take home), a final that will count double if better than any other exam, and there's an automatic 10% curve! Also, he's highly intelligent, very organized, and overall a very effective teacher. Don't believe the idiot-hype.
I have misgivings about grabowski. On one hand, his exams are are so hard all you can do is laugh, but on the other, he's above average in all other measures of a good prof. Most final grades tend to turn well if you put in a ton of work, but don't ask me how.i got 2 exam scores in the 50s and 1 in the 70s, and did real well on take homes and final.
You have a lot of extra credit opportunities. He gives out past year practice questions and exams-try doing them all! Attend all lectures and recitation, ask TAs for clarification. You can drop the lowest exam score and let final count for double. I got an A by doing all these things . Exams ARE hard-but doable if yo put the effort.
He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities, a lot of past year questions (which usually pop out in his take-home exams or the real exams-so DO THEM!). Go to the ARC, ask your TAs for help. Do all the recommended problems from the textbook. Grabowski is challenging, but you'll learn a lot. You can also drop the lowest score from your exams.
Essential to the process of learning organic chemistry is the drawing of mechanisms and seeing them drawn in class; this process was eliminated in this version of Organic 1 by utilization of lecture slides and lecture handout slides which included figures of the molecules.
He was a pretty good teacher, he 's very smart and will answer your questions. But WOW, are his exams brutally difficult. You have to spend enormous amounts of time on this class, it's possible but there are better options out there even with all his bonus points. Better teachers at teaching the material and certainly many easier ones.
I had Joe for freshman programs class. Easy 1 credit class that only required you to show up for the 12 weeks it ran. There was a 'final' that was actually just a jeopardy game. Joe is a cool dude and I may just have to take him for OCHEM next year.
Hands down the worst professor I have ever encountered. At least a third of our class had to drop/withdraw. There are no TAs, you aren't allowed to get help on the homeworks, other professors don't understand his questions, and he has no interest in the students actually learning the material or being available for extra help. Do not take him.
Grabowski is very smart, and he expects a lot out of his students. Just go to class, do the recitation worksheets, read the book, do the practice problems and previous exams, and use his online resources, and you'll be fine. It's a ton of work, but if you do it, you'll get the results you're looking for.
Great prof and guy. Although he seems uptight during lecture, he is a very nice prof that is willing to help. Is a bit tough, but with some good studying, an A is fairly easy to obtain. 3 in class exams, 1 take home exam, and a final. If you do well on final, he counts it twice and drops one of the other exams. Great professor, must have!
Great professor and guy. Uptight in lecture, but very personal and helpful outside of class. Expects a lot from his students, but it benefited us greatly. By far one of the smartest profs I've ever had. He drops an exam and counts the final as 2 if it will help your grade. A great prof, and one I would love to have again for OChem 2.
Honestly, one of the worst classes I've ever taken. He is one of the worst teachers, as well as human, I've ever met. Don't take his class, not because of the grade you'll get, but because you won't learn anything. I came in enjoying chemistry, and left hating everything about it. Many people had to drop out. Save the misery, don't take it.
Grabowski demands a lot out of his students. Hours of work are required for this class-- if you're dedicated you'll learn the material. Very condescending when you ask a question, but is a very involved teacher. He's very frustrating, however I definitely learned a lot.
Although this class is a lot of work, his grading scale is very fair (above an 80 is an A). The average of the class was 2.5/4.0, which is better than most classes where the teacher curves to a C. Notes were a good starting point, but KhanAcademy, etc were necessary to get a better understanding of material. Not a fun class, but doable if you work
He really demanded a lot of work through the homework problems to understand the material. Really you have to set aside time to do the homework to understand. His tests were pretty hard, but you get to drop one. He's actually really smart and you learn through the mistakes you make.
He did not seemed interested in helping the students at all. He did not post his powperpoint slides online, which isn't a major issue, but during class he would zoom through the slides, making the one-time chance for us to get the notes useless. He also went too in-depth for a first-time chemistry course.
TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE. Goes way too in depth. Teaches from the book in lecture but expects students to know way more in depth for exams. When questions are asked or incorrect answers are given he seems cocky and somewhat laughs at students. Does not seem like he wants to help his students understand.
Very bad Gen Chem 1 professor. He's a pretty cool guy, and sometimes funny, but his exams are insanely difficult and doesnt show much interest in helping students. Try to find an easy professor.
Worst professor ever. NEVER take him. Average for our first exam was a D and average for our second exam was a C. I went to his office hours and he went off about my generation of kids and didn't even answer my questions. NO QUESTIONS DURING THE EXAM AT ALL. The only questions you're allowed to ask is if there's a typo on the exam. worst teacher.
DO NOT TAKE. Most arrogant man at Pitt. He is not willing to help students or answer questions. His expectations for exams/take home tests require far greater knowledge than presented in the textbook. Ended up withdrawing and am currently retaking with a different professor. The class is much more enjoyable with a professor that wants to help.
Absolute worst professor I have ever had. His tests are designed to see how well you can guess an answer in 50 minutes. You can study for hours and still bomb. He holds no review sessions, laughs at you during office hours, and doesn't care about how well you do. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
DO NOT TAKE CHEM WITH HIM!!!! He is awful. Not helpful at all. Seriously told us not to ask questions during the tests. The tests were extremely difficult and hard to finish in the time given. You can study and do all the practice problems and still fail.
This was Prof Grabowski's first time teaching Gen Chem 1. He is one of the worst lecturers I have ever had. He doesn't post full slides and goes very fast and skips slides. The averages on all of the Midterms were D's or F's. He has said he won't curve grades at all and responds with rude remarks when you ask for help.
Look its ochem so it's gonna be hard but his incomplete lecture notes are very helpful if you go to class. does a good job of explaining things. His grade scale is really fair (lots of EC for clickers, final can replace lowest test) best prep for orgo2 out of all the teachers. Also posts lots of previous exams which great test prep. Recommended
I had great interest in chemistry before I took this class, I am hoping Chem 2 will re-ignite it. We blew through 175 or more slides a week,no work done on chalkboards, hardest tests I've ever taken. No questions during tests, Good luck even finishing in alotted time! Managed to squeeze by with a C due to high lab and recitation scores. DO NOT TAKE
DO NOT TAKE GEN CHEM 1 WITH HIM!! He failed to go in depth on the general concepts and focused mainly on organic chem concepts. Extra credit was offered as a bribe to sit through his excruciatingly boring class. He was not willing to help students during class/office hours, and laughed at simple questions that were asked.
He is really helpful during office hour and explain things really clearly! His tests cover exactly what he covers on lecture. If you don't go lecture, it's totally fine. You just need to go through the text book. I went to lectures but I did not take notes for his incomplete slides. He curves the grade a lot! I guess A is above 88. I got 94.
I hate OWlv2. 50 problems a week? ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?
I would never suggest this man to anyone. In fact, as soon as his name is mentioned on campus, everyone reacts the same way: a groan. He will not help you even if you ask for it. He goes through notes extremely fast & are impossible to record in time. He doesn't provide clear explanations nor does he take time to explain math. Avoid at all costs.
Avoid this class at all costs. If you plan on taking his course you better be a quick writer because he rushes through all of his powerpoint slides and don't bother asking questions because he will literally laugh in your face. On top of that, the 50 questions a week will take you 2+ hours. Love chemistry, hate this class.
Hard to learn, hard to approach, hard to get a decent grade..... this class is just hard overall. As someone who truly enjoys chemistry, it was disappointing to deal with this monstrosity. Overwhelming homework and too tough tests paired with terrible teaching. Avoid at all costs.
I honestly hate this man. This man has absolutely ruined my interest in chemistry and my freshman fall term as a whole. He should never be allowed to teach in America. AVOID THIS MAN LIKE EBOLA.
Grabowski spend almost all the time in lecture focusing on the overly complicated concepts, but spends very little time explaining the actual Chemistry problems, which appear all over his difficult exams.
Dr. Grabowski is a very difficult general chemistry teacher, because he has a higher intelligence level and expects you to know more in-depth concepts of chemistry than gen chem normally would. Extra credit is only offered in lecture, and reading the book is a must to pass
Dr. Grabowski's class is really tough and the lecture doesn't feel connected to recitation or lab. But he is a fair grader and gives you lots of resources. Answers email about 50% of the time. Gen Chem 1 was a HUGE lecture hall class, but participation mattered (you use a clicker to answer questions). Show up to lecture to get extra credit points.
Dr. Grabowski expects you to have a lot more prior knowledge than most students in a GenChem 1 class should have. Everything I read about Dr. Grabowski as a professor before I took his class turned out to be true. However, I managed to pass with a B and I did poorly on most of my tests. Go to class to get the EC and utilize the final.
he expects you to have a lot of "prior knowledge" but most of his students did not have any. the tests are both multiple choice and short answer, and he gives about 30 points in extra credit if you go to class. the final can count for double if you do better on the final than on any other test. the curve is pretty big too
He expects students to have a better understanding of gen chem than most do. Doesn't give enough time for tests, and the tests are hard. Weekly homework assignments take hours. If you already have a good understanding of chem, go for it, otherwise choose another prof.
I hated going to class. He was rude to students and flew through material, saying it should be in your "PK" or prior knowledge, and we should be "experts" 30 seconds after learning. Also, when a student asks a question in class he says "you would know if you read the book" and does not answer. His tests are very difficult and homework took hours.
I learned very little from him and his lectures. I passed this class due to outside resources and great TAs. My TA spent the recitation trying to teach us the material before we were quizzed on it. His tests are nothing like the practice exams, and it was very hard to do well on them, even though I have always been good at chem. Do not take him.
Professor Grabowski's tests were extremely difficult for me even though I did numerous practice problems, practice tests, and just the homework which was due each week (way too many problems). Lab and extra credit will pull up your grade. I had 2 test grades in the 40s and 50s and still passed because of the extra credit and lab.
Lectures are fast and sometimes hard to follow. Strongly suggest using the textbook to supplement what he's doing in lecture. Also tests are pretty difficult and the amount of homework per week is rather excessive.
Gen Chem I was awful! Lectures come straight from textbook with no detail. Flies through examples and then online homework is ten times harder. Only way to do well on the tests is to teach yourself the chapters. Would have done terrible in class had I not had a great AP Chem teacher in high school. Don't take this class with him if possible!!
Avoid him if you have the opportunity. Way too much homework, hard weekly quizzes, difficult tests, and lectures are him flying through powerpoint slides. Reading the text was the only way I passed.
Not as bad as everyone makes him out to be. He is kind of confusing in lectures, but just read the textbook and you will be fine. He also gives a lot of extra credit and curves your final grade a lot. Got 2 Bs and 2 Cs on the exams and finished with an A.
Bottom line, difficult prof. Hard class, you need to work for every lecture in the class and out. Know the material and dedicate yourself to OWL and the extra 'non-graded' assignments and you will learn loads. You'll gain more than just a grade with Grabowski.
Nice guy, seems like he wants you to pass. Liked him a lot as a person. But, awful teacher, lectures are disjointed, assignments are 10+ hours a week and allow no time for studying or anything else. Was told not to take him but thought i might survive. I was wrong.
Although I had Grabowski for chem 1, he spent more time talking about organic chem. He refused to give practiceold exams, sped through lecture notes, and refused to go back or post online. Exams were really fast paced, difficult, and stressful. Would recommend dropping out before taking this professor.
Do not take him! Wait a semester for other profs if you have to. Basically taught myself college-level chemistry. Tests are impossible! The only reason to go to lecture is for the extra credit opportunities. He does not hold office hours for undergrads, so if, like me, u get stuck with a horrible TA for recitation, you're on your own if u need help
Tests are graduate level. If you had any trouble at all with chem in high school expect to be destroyed by this class. I felt like I was thrown into a pool without knowing how to swim and I just slowly drowned. He expects you to know everything about basic chemistry and if you don't know it perfectly you're in trouble.
Do not take him; he's a terrible professor. 50 homework problems a week that don't prepare you for the exam. EXAMS ARE VERY DIFFICULT. The lectures are clear; he pulls examples from the book. Extra credit questions in lecture, so attend for those points. If you have other options for professors, I would definitely take someone else.
Grabowski is by far one of the most difficult teachers I have ever had in my entire life. Not only is he generally unclear as a lecturer, but he makes his tests with the sole intention of having his students fail. His tests do not really test knowledge and mastery of chemistry, but whether or not you can pick up on useless info. Avoid Grabowski
Professor Grabowski is misunderstood, yes, the exams are hard - however he posts learning objectives online that explicitly state what you should be prepared to do on each exam. In addition, there is more than enough extra credit points available in class that are easy to obtain. Bottom line: unless you have to take higher level chem courses, avoid
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. YOU WILL REGRET IT. 50 Homework problems a week that are nothing like what is on the test.
Impossible tests even after the 50 hw questionsweek. I actually liked lectures because they were organized and moved quickly, but he'd often move too quickly and not give enough time to write everything down. A good number of test questions weren't even covered in the notes. IMPORTANT: I did MUCH better in Chem2 than people with easier professors.
Prof Grabowski is really tough and his lectures are very confusing. I would not recommend him to anyone. Tests are written at a graduate school level. Overall, very challenging course.
Grabowski is a misunderstood professor. His lectures and tests are extremely difficult, but its not because he doesn't know how to teach, it is just because he is way too overqualified to teach a gen chem class. He's one of the head OChem professors at Pitt! If you take is class, make sure you DO read the book and do online homework.
Warning: do not take his class. 50 long homework problems a week (even during university breaks), confusing lectures, and very tough test.
Don't take him if you are looking for an easy A. There are 50 mandatory homework questions due every week, not to mention countless optional practice problems. Lectures are very well organized and jam packed with important information, so don't skip. Tests are quite difficult, however he curves the class. Hard prof, but I learned a lot from him
Definitely not an "easy" class. There are weekly online homework assignments and you must read the book, as well as do the book practice problems, in order to fully grasp the chemistry concepts. However, Grabowski is an underrated teacher-- he is very organized and gives good, clear directions. Tests are tough, but ends up fair with the curve.
Dr. Grabowski gets a bad reputation because his expectations are high, but in reality he's a very good teacher, especially in small group settings. I went to his office hours every single week during the semester and ended with an A in the class. He was originally an Honors O-chem teacher, which helps to explain the difficulty level as well.
He is a lazy guy who reads off the power points. The tests are tough and the average is usually around 60. Don't worry about grade though; as long as you are above average, you will get at least a B. My average was 80 and I got an A. You get credits for clicker questions so make sure you go to class.
Grabowski as a human being is someone I despise. With that being said, he is not a bad teacher. For some reason students think if they have to study for a class, the professor is awful. The class is not easy, but he does a really good job preparing you if you do the homework and make sure you understand it. You just have to put the work in.
Very difficult tests and barely time to study because the online homework problems are assigned every week and take about 8-15 hours each problem set.
Doctor Grabowski was a very disappointing professor. His lectures were long and rambling and often unclear. The only study tool helpful to me for the exams were the old exams that he put up on CourseWeb. That being said, when you ask him for help or for clarity during office hours or one on one after class, he was helpful, clear, and understanding.
DON'T DO IT! I wish someone would have told me about him before I took him for Gen Chem 1. He assigns 50 homework problems a week and each problem almost always have multiple parts to it. The exams are timed and extremely difficult. Save yourself the stress if you can and don't take his class.
Grabowski is great. He is very helpful if you go to his office hours, and his lectures are pretty clear. 50 online problems due a week, but they are very very helpful for the tests. He gives multiple past tests so that you have a lot of practice.
Very difficult professor. Class averages are around 50% for all tests. Does not explain concepts well in class and typically covers a chapter a lecture which is 1 hour 15 minutes. 50 homework questions assigned a week and even the tutors do not know how to do some of them. All in all would not recommend.
Both as a person and a professor, Dr. Grabowski is quite disrespectful. Expect to work on homework for at least 5 hours a week, and for tests to be nearly impossible because his sole purpose is to trick you. Will blow you off and tell you to read the textbook when you ask a question. Avoid at all costs if you would like to pass.
Extremely difficult course. In this class often used the saying, "You are your own professor."
AVOID AVOID AVOID. If you need to keep a high GPA, take Golde or any other gen chem professor. 50 homework problems due every Saturday that take hours to complete, and the average on every test was around a 50%. I knew he was going to be bad going into the class, but I didn't know he was going to be that bad. Avoid at all costs.
The only positive thing I took away from this man was that I do not belong in any science department, ESPECIALLY not the chemistry department. Very confusing lectures, no places to turn to for help, constantly buried in homework, hard tests, etc. Prepare to camp out in the tutoring center. What a terrible class.
I took AP and OChem in high school and still struggled in this class. His lectures are pretty clear but the exams are very tricky and the questions are not straightforward.
I had Grabowski for Chem 1 and OChem 1. I have to say he is better for OChem than he was for Chem 1 but he still makes his tests super tough and intentionally puts on trick questions. On tests and homework there are often OChem 2 problems that I only knew how to solve because I went to the tutor and they told me it was OChem 2 material. dont take
Dr. Grabowski makes the Orgo 1 class very fair. The in class lecture notes are very helpful, and he explains things well for the most part.
For goodness sake STAY AWAY!!!! I have your best interest at heart. The other people didn't make it clear enough. Do not! I mean do not take him! Even as a last resort, avoid. He gives extra credit through clickers but that's not enough to give you the cushion you need from the overly complicated exams he gives. AVOID AT ALL COST #allgpasmatter
Dr. Grabowski cares about student's feedback and really wants everyone to succeed. He made ochem bearable by getting the students involved during lectures. It's difficult but doable. Attend class for extra credit, do all the graded HW and all the passed exams he gives you and there's no reason you shouldnt get atleast a B. He curves too.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!! Save your GPA, wait another semester for another teacher. Smart professor but the tests are very tricky/not straightforward. Online homework that takes hours to complete every single week (50+ questions).
He ruined my love of chemistry and my GPA. This class was awful and the tests did not accurately represent what was taught in the class. He is an o-chem professor and he tries to integrate it into his class and exams when it is not needed WHATSOEVER and at inappropriate times, (exams). DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR ANYTHING.
I had Grabowski for gen-chem and ochem and he is a definitely a better ochem professor. His ochem tests had very low averages (34% raw avg on 2nd midterm) and are challenging. If you can take it with a different professor do so, but if you have him it won't be the end of the world. HW is a huge boost and tons of extra credit during lecture
Honestly thought that Grabowski was a pretty good professor. Took him for ochem 2 and definitely learned a lot. If you do the online homework, book problems, and practice exams, you'll be set for the real exams. He gave a ton of extra credit and curved the class so much. He may be hard, but its not hard to get a good grade in his class.
Grabowski's class is known for being extremely difficult, and you will really want to cry after putting study time into his class, but the class is curved incredibly and he offers extra credit opportunities. He incorporates organic chem into gen chem, which made it 10x harder, but he dropped the lowest test score if that helped your grade.
Don't do this to yourself. If you have even the slightest difficulty understanding chemistry, this will be absolute hell for you and you will struggle.
Had him for OCHEM II. He's a tough professor, but keep in mind OCHEM II will be tough with anyone. As far as developing a real understanding of organic chemistry and why it is important for graduate learning coupled with developing a passion for learning; he's one of the best professors out there. But make no mistake. It's never easy, not even a B.
You'll have to work your ass off to pass. Bottom line. He says right from the getgo that he expects you to put in a ton of hours each week outside of class, and you'll have to. The material is already hard, and he doesn't make it any easier. If you're someone who can put in the work, take the class. It's a hard-won A. If you just want to pass? No
Grawbowski's exams are so hard well over half the class rutinely fails - hence why he's on academic probation for failing too many students. Any other professor will explain reactions and present material in a much more accessible and logical manner. Basically, he is the perfect mix of typical tenured professor and nightmare stories of OChem.
This class tested my physical and mental stability. He's not good at describing concepts, so if you can't teach yourself, don't take him at all. You will fail. He was on probation for failing too many students. Do the extra work outside class. Good luck. You'll need it.
Dr. Grabowski is tough but fair. He is a very good professor, he knows his stuff and very passionate about it. He gives extra credits and hw is a test grade and its easy to get As on all of them. You also get to drop a test grade so thats bonus. 80% is an A so it's really not that bad. He also puts tons of stuff on courseweb.
Professor G is honestly the best professor I've ever had! I was so scared to take his class because everyone says hes really hard but it really wasn't that bad. He gives over 30 extra credit points and they boost your grade so much. Also 80% is an A so if you put in the work it's not impossible.
Loved him! I saw on this site before I took his class that he wasn't good so I was preparing for the worst but he's an amazing teacher! Really knows his stuff AND he really knows how to teach it. Great and explaining things and giving you the confidence you need to succeed in his class! TAKE!
I've heard a lot bad things about Dr. Grabowski but he isn't really that bad. He gives tons of extra credit and his lecture is extremely organized! It really isn't that bad
Ochem is hard no matter who you take. For grabowski 400/500 total points is an A. You get extra credit just for attending lecture and answering clicker questions. Final can replace your lowest exam score. Posts lots of old exams for practice. Its alot of work (as it is with any professor) but if you study and do the homework its not hard to get a B
All the people who are saying he's a bad teacher are liars. They're pissed they were forced to realize they're not as smart as they thought they were. Grabowski is a GREAT professor. I was super scared going into the class but he is very easy and fun to talk to, thrilled to answer questions, and values student feedback.
Professor Grabowski is amazing. He's passionate for chemistry and if you want to really understand it / actually are interested in the topic, you should absolutely take him. If you're not interested in those things, you probably shouldn't take Ochem anyways. grabowski goes into the fundamentals and will help you become the chemist you want to be.
The class is not easy and the averages are in the 50s, but he's a great teacher. The class is appropriately curved so you don't have to worry about failing or getting a bad grade--and you'll learn a ton about ochem. Lots of practice tests are available so you know exactly what to expect for the exams.
Amazing professor. Not only does he care about the subject he's teaching, he cares about the students and wants them to do well. He'll go out of his way to help you succeed in his class in every way. Accessible, easy to understand.
Awesome and totally fair teachers. Tests are clear and straight forward, but not too easy. The homework can take time (avg. 2.5 hrs a week) but is super helpful for the exams. If you listen in class you'll pass fine.
Ochem seems scary but Grabowski makes it clear and easy to understand. You get a ton of extra credit from attending the lectures which is a plus. Doesn't require too much outside of the classroom work to do well on the tests. Great guy, great teacher. 10/10 recommend.
If you have the option, take a different professor. Save yourself the overwhelming stress. EVERY professor in the chem dept is better than Grabowski. The only reason he teaches is because he has to as part of his tenure agreement. To those that say his class is easy and great, I wonder where the bar for teaching standards is set for them.
There is a reason why every student on campus knows of Grabowski. Very few of his students respect him and it's not hard to see why with averages at 45%. Sure he gives extra credit, but it isn't enough. HW, each midterm, and the final are all weighted equally. If I had to put myself through another semester with this man - I would go insane.
I'd wish you good luck, but it wouldn't help you. Welcome to the semester of Hell. Work as hard as you have ever worked for anything in your life and you might manage a B - assuming that you disregard all other classes you are taking. This class, with Grabowski specifically, will consume your life and your soul.
If you define a good teacher simply by how passionate they are, you'll love this man. But if you have ever had a teacher where you lose track of time in the class because it is so interesting, this man is not for you - you will be wondering when class ends 10min into lecture (and there's still 1hr to go). I couldn't wait for lecture to be done.
Not too much work tbh. If you do the assigned homework and the practice tests its study enough and besides that you don't have to put much time into the class. Lectures are easy to follow and he's always there to help you if you're confused. Very invested in his students succeeding. Def should take him.
If you have another option for OCHEM 1 take it. His test averages are extremely low (in the 40-50's% range) because he uses complex and trick questions. He also frequently references ochem2 material. He expects you to do 50 online hw probs per week, tons of end of chapter txtbk probs, clicker q's in class, & 6 old exams to prepare for assessments.
So here is the drill with grabowski. GO TO CLASS AND MAKE SURE YOU GET MOST OF THE CLICKER QUESTIONS. DO YOUR SAPLING AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE 100% AND EVERYONE OF THEM. EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO USE CHEGG USE IT. The sapling is just for extra practice it looks nothing like what is on the exam. Take advantage of the human beings who teach recitation
Be sure to go into this class with good orgo 1 foundation. Impossible to do most exam questions if you don't. He isn't unfair but you definitely need to put in a lot of hard work to even do remotely okay in his class. Take advantage of extra credit opportunities.
He drops your lowest exam and doubles your final. The percentage for each exam is equal and the assignments too. but be sure to give you life and soul to this class. I mean literally. He is tough on all levels but you learn a lot especially if you want to write the MCAT.
Go into his office hours and ask specific questions, If you want to learn the material for whatever reason he will help you. He has 4 office hours a week and is a walking chemistry book. People that talk bad about his class just got embarrassed because he makes you work. I got a b- in his ochem 1 section but actually learned then got the A in 2
Take someone else, anybody else if possible
Dr. Grabowski clearly outlines the grading criteria for the class and sticks to the course schedule. I found the print-out lecture notes to be extremely helpful. Quizzes given over the two weeks leading up to exams motivated me to review relevant material. Overall, there were no unpleasant surprises. Staying up-to-date on material is key to do well
I had him for 1 and 2. Gr8 teacher. He is very, very hard but he is one of the best teachers I have ever had. His powerpoint were so detailed and his tests were extremely challenging, but he prepares and teaches you the right way. We took the ACS orgo1&2 test as our final and I scored in the top 2 percentile so that is a testament to his teaching.
Great teacher with very clear grading requirements. You can literally get a 50 on every exam but a 100 on hw and get the extra credit and get a B in the class. So easy if you put forth effort.
He's a really difficult professor, but he gives a LOT of extra credit in class. 2 quizzes and a midterm per unit, and the quizzes are REALLY helpful in boosting your assessment score. DO THE HOMEWORK. It's worth the same as an exam and it helps with studying. I got an F and had to repeat this class with him and did amazingly.
Dr. Grabowski is a great professor in my opinion. He expects you to work hard in order to succeed but you will come out of the class knowing the material well. Exams are quite challenging. However, there are weekly homework assignments , quizzes, and extra credit that will boost your grade.
If this class were T/Th I wouldn't have passed. The MWF option allows him to quiz you on the mechanisms rather than having you test on everything on the larger exams. This made the quizzes, while still hard, manageable to get points on as long as you knew the material which he lists in class. Use the old exams as a foundation for reagents to know.
I had Dr. Grabowski for UHC Org. Chem 1 and 2 all the way back in 2003-2004. He is a tough grader, but he is an excellent professor, and I would take his courses again if I could go back in time. He prepared me very well for my pharmacology and biochemistry courses in pharmacy school. One of the very best professors at Pitt!!
Grabowski was a tough prof. This is a weeding out class. I took him twice, but retook Orgo 1 after I had him to get a B+. My frame of reference is based on what I learned from the other teacher I took- Hudson. Everything was much clearer through Hudson, walked through, broken down. Grabowksi was frustrating- but if you do your work you can get an A
Didn't have a good Orgo 1 background, but put in the work to do well. Units are 2 quizzes and an exam to give 100 pts, so if you score high on the quizzes, you can get above average on the assessment. HW is req. weekly, but is helpful. Can be intimidating and condescending, but he knows OChem really well. Gives 10 pts (of 500) of extra credit.
Organic Chemistry 2 is a hard class regardless of the professor you take. Grabowski is a great choice because of his very informational lectures. His exams are tough, but fair. I loved going to this class to hear the dad jokes and extra information he would give us. Practice problems and you will pass.
This is the hardest class I have after taken but Grabowski is one of the best professors I've ever had. He wanted us all to learn so badly. Very accessible and will help you at any time if you ask for it. BUT his tests are extremely hard with averages in the high 40s/low 50s. Generous curve and offers bonus points. There is no other prof I'd take.
Very intelligent, but not good at teaching. His notes are posted before class to fill in, but they are nearly useless for studying. There are 6 quizzes, 3 exams and a final, and online HW. He is not good at explaining the concepts and doesn't give much partial credit
He's knowledgable on the topics and provides outlines to follow along with, but he can speed through topics. Quizzes are usually fair, but topics can be ambiguous. Scoring with partial credit can be inconsistent at times and exams follow the same setup. Synthesis questions are always 25% of exams. Don't recommend if you REALLY struggled in ochem 1
The class is going to be hard no matter what, but Grawboski gives mostly clear expectations of what to know. Spend time on things he tells you to and you will be fine. He tells you the material on the quizzes a week in advance and gives LOTS of practice for the exams (including old exams). I struggled in OChem 1 and found this class to be easier.
While Dr. Grabowski is a nice guy, having him for OChem 2 is awful. His notes are incomplete so you lectures are mandatory. He sets up assessments that are comprised of two quizzes (17 points each) and the exam (66 points). The quizzes are always meant to trip you up. Averages are in the single digits. Exams are in the 40s-50s. I would avoid.
Grabowski could be a better professor, but his quizzes which are too challenging to be put into a 15 min time frame can mess up the majority of the class average during the exams. Tophat questions are given every lecture as well as pre-made notes that he does not post later. Try to find another professor if you can help it.
Orgo 2 is going to be difficult no matter what. Dr. Grabowski makes it bearable through his incomplete lecture notes which force you to stay engaged with the material during lecture. His quizzes can be tricky, but the material he releases for exam prep are REALLY helpful and show you the exact format of the exam. Study hard and you should be fine.
Dr. Grabowski is a decent lecturer, but if you go to him with any questions, especially if they are grade related, he will rip you apart. One of the rudest professors Ive ever met. Claims not to curve but has to with averages in the low 40s. Had no idea what my grade would be until the class was over. Wouldnt recommend.
Not the worst option, but definitely not a good option. Tests are hard and he uses the ACS final instead of writing his own. If youre stuck with him, know the reactions well and use the old exams to study.
Not a bad professor when it comes to teaching. He makes sure you know your stuff, but his quizzes and tests are very difficult. I don't know how so many people on this site got A's because as a good student in his class, you should probably expect a B (at best). He is a good choice if you want to learn, but this guy might make your GPA tank.
He gives fill in notes that you have to print before lecture (completed notes not posted online) and did not once write on the board. He made it clear on day 1 that you should not email him with questions. Not one exam average was above a D. Claims not to curve. Gives minimal (if any) partial credit on exams/quizzes. Gives weekly sapling homework.
Grabowski is a good teacher for some people the reason I rated him a 3 is because i don't think his teaching style works for a great deal of people. There is a lot of memorization and his tests and quizzes are VERY hard. Don't take him unless you have a very solid Ochem1 base. Get ready to work hard but he has a huge grade curve at the end
I had an awful experience with this professor, he was extremely condescending towards students with questions and showed little respect. He also did seem to appreciate the need for disability accomodations and even attempted to avoid providing them. If you can take this class with anyone else, please try! This class will only add unecessary stress.
Grabowski isn't an easy choice for Ochem 2, but he gives you all the resources you need to succeed. Do ALL of the practice exams, and use every resource that he gives you. In office hours he can be helpful, but only if you come with very specific questions to ask. For reference, I finished the course with a 76% and ended up with an A-.
This classes was SO stressful. One of the hardest Ochem teachers you can take at pitt. When things went online he was not very accommodating and was very rude to students when they asked questions.
He is a very tough professor and expects you to know a lot about Ochem 1. His tests and quizzes are very difficult but if you put in the time you can succeed. His assignments were very fair and he gives you plenty of chances to make up points where you may have lots them. Overall I say take if you want to understand ochem.
I wouldn't recommend taking Orgo 2 with Grabowski if you did not take him for Orgo 1. He expects you to know a lot of things from Orgo 1, some of which I did not learn with my professor. We had a quiz (sometimes 2) every single week. The quizzes were always insanely difficult and took hours upon hours of studying to pass. Overall don't recommend.
He is a very very tough grader, which sucks because his tests are also very very hard.
I really liked Grabowski, but do not take him if you are not willing to put in the work. He uses top hat as part of your grade so you can't really skip class. He explains concepts well and tells you what will be on the exams, but you need to do extra work to succeed in his class. Do all of his old exams and the recommenced problems from the book.
Quizzes and tests are basically impossible. The class averages for all assessments are hidden but the averages are believed to be around 40% and you need somewhere around a 59% for a C-. It’s constantly stressful and everyone I’ve talked to is very concerned about failing, even after exceeding in ochem 1. I’m sorry if you have to take him.
does not release averages but seemed to be around 30% for tests. nobody knows if they pass until final grades come out which is extremely stressful during the semester. claims there's no curve but curved me up one letter grade based on his original grading scale on syllabus. weekly quizzes and homework.
Lots of people were very upset by Joe's teaching style because he is very quick, condescending, and places emphasis on the big picture. This class requires a lot of memorization and his tests are very doable. If you do the practice Achieves, the practice tests, and the book problems I can guarantee you will do well. Nothing to be scared of.
This was my most stressful class this semester. It was a lot of work due to weekly hw and quizzes/ exams. You can only guess your grade by adding up the points you've earned and comparing that to what's in the syllabus. He moves fast in lecture and you really need to know your stuff to do well. Luckily there was extra credit and a curve at the end.
Although condescending, Dr. G isn't a bad professor. He wants his students to succeed in his class with tons of extra credit (30+ points in the semester). Take everyone's opinion of his "tough" exams and quizzes with a grain of salt. They likely didn't do all the practice exams and homework properly. Keep up with the workload and you will do fine.
Fall 2021-I loved having him!! He had exams, quizzes, and homework. He clearly cares about us succeeding since he even had 2 surveys (both EC) asking for feedback on what we liked and how he can improve (also gave up to 25pts EC throughout the course!). Print PP slides for LEC, so helpful! Also orgo 1 was on the dept final but he gave practice too!
I don't like saying bad things about professors but I genuinely believe he didn't want students to succeed. he tested on random things that did not actually test your understanding of the subject. try your hardest not to take him and if you have to take him get ready to watch a lot of Joechem videos to make up for his unhelpful lectures.
jk thank you for the curve
Where do I even begin...I worked my butt off and surprisingly I received a B in the course but seriously be warned. I cried so many nights and lost so much sleep that my roommates thought I was attempting the Russian Sleep Experiment. This is a really tough course and, for me to even get a B, I had to make this class my #1 priority.
Prepare for this class to be your whole life. Grabowski is tough but you also have to show him that you're putting effort in.
I made this class my life this semester. Exams were incredibly difficult and I felt very discouraged after seeing no progress for over half the semester. I found lectures unhelpful and made it through by utilizing TA office hours and tutoring. Offers extra credit + takes feedback on improving the course, didn't know my grade until the end.
The worst lectures of my life and the hardest tests. Massive curve but this class takes full effort to survive. If you cried in ochem1/do not know how to actually study don't bother taking this class you will not survive JoeChem every single lecture actually try on the homeworks and memorize the compounds he highlights on the slides for the quiz
Talks at you for 50 minutes straight, which is not how anybody learns. The homework takes hours, look at the textbook for clarification, and do every practice exam he gives. This is the most memorization heavy class I have ever taken. Insists that he doesn't curve but curved my grade at least half a letter up from the scale he had in the syllabus.
Grabowski was an amazing O Chem 2 professor. His exams are tough and the average was low but he gave lots of practice material and listened to students suggestions. His lectures were entertaining and although his exams were hard he gave plenty of extra credit and homework points. I really feel like I learned a lot from him and he's a great prof.
At first, I absolutely hated this class, but I learned how to study for it and ended up doing well. Dr. G is passionate about teaching and you can really see that. He gives tons of practice problems and exams as well as extra credit and does a decent curve (I averaged 75/80 on exams and got an A). The final is the ACS exam but it's not that bad.
Gives a TON of partial on exams and extra credit in general, but not very personable. Go to every lecture for the clicker points, do ALL of the homework, and make sure that you write out everything on exams even if you don't know the complete final answer because he is generous with partial credit.
If you don't have a decent grasp of OChem 1 do not even consider taking this class. Dr. G seems like he wants you to succeed, but his expectations and exam questions are immensely difficult. He teaches faster than any other prof and adds concepts that no one else teaches, only for you NOT to use them on the ACS final that is a majority of OChem 1.
Exams and quizzes are extremely hard, but he gives a lot of partial credit. Homework takes a while and doesn't count for that much but is helpful for learning the material. I spent a lot of time watching JoeChem and teaching myself. Not the worst choice. Probably curved about half a letter grade.
I was convinced I was going to have to retake this class but then ended up getting an A. Averages were in the 30s so don't be discouraged if your first exam grade is a lot lower than you're used to. Says he doesn't curve (just extra credit) but he definitely did. There is a lot of opportunity for points besides exams but exams are HARD.
Please take this class with a bunch of easy classes because if you take other STEM classes with this one then you are a sadomasochist. This class is a lot of work, he isn't the best lecturer and his tests are very HARD! He offers a bunch of extra credit so please take advantage of it
