Prof. Hassert is really funny and makes the class enjoyable since it is something none of us like to do. If you need help organizing a speech or have any questions, he is more than happy to help you. He constantly gives you feedback that helps you improve your speeches. There are 5 online quizzes that you need to read the book for. & 4 speeches.
4 Speeches (in order): Introduction, Informative, Persuasive, and Toast Also, if you miss more than 4 classes, he starts removing .5day on your final grade. Dr. Hassert is awesome, he's pretty funny and makes you feel comfortable giving speeches. I would definitely take him again!
Dr Hassert made coming back to school after 20 years enjoyable
Very good class, 5 quizzes are easy if you just read, the book is so helpful and material is much more than you're average lecture. The exam was so easy, literally just read the book keep up with assignments and actually try to do well on the 4 speeches and you may get 100%. Joe is approachable and very eager to help you succeed. Very innovative.
Looked forward to going to Com 101, excellent Professor! Taught a lot about the ability to public speak.
I believe he is an awesome Professor I would take his class if he taught Com 102.
Super easy and fun class. It is a public speaking class so he likes to force class interaction activities to break the ice, but they're fun. 4 speeches. Pretty easy grader. Really enjoyed to class and I'm terrified of public speaking. Online quizzes are so easy, 15 minutes to answer 4 questions.
Best professor I've had in any class. Lectures could use work, but the way he makes the class feels like a close community really helped when you're up there speaking in front of the class. I used to be terrified of public speaking but with his help and feedback, it's not so bad anymore. Definitely recommend his class, I miss it already!
Really funny guy. Only four speeches throughout the semester with small quizzes in between and a final exam. Very much enjoyed the class considering it was public speaking. Would recommend
By far the best teacher I will ever have. He gives four reasonable speeches and small online quizzes. He made the class feel like a community. I will surely miss his class. I've learned so much from all my classmates too.
Joe was organized, personable and very knowledgeable about his subject. Some Phd's feel like they need to rewrite their subject and give students bad grades for not knowing what took them 8 - 12 years to obtain. Anyway, he's fun and it's a fun class if you try to make it a community experience. Must make speech days which he puts you at ease.
Great professor ! There were 4 speeches in total and two of them really important. Gives you lots of time and some class days to work on them & if very helpful if you are struggling. He gives feedback on all speeches, and quizzes are online. Due to the openness of the speeches on your personal interest the class bonds together and is fun class.
Amazing professor. Not a tough grader for speeches. If you are a nervous freak you'll struggle a little but taking this class will defiantly help you better yourself.
Joe is a very fun teacher. The lectures are informative and fun. I'm actually really enjoying his class. After speech #1, realized that I have so many brave classmates, and I don't need to be nervous when speaking in front of them. If you need this class for your core curriculum, choose Joe for a teacher.
I took Hassert's communication class fall 2015. He's a great instructor; easy to follow, funny, and just overall makes the semester go quick. Also watch out because he walks backwards a lot and trips on chairs, tables, and himself. Which adds to the fun. Had a blast in his class though and looked forward to it everyday.
No thank you. He get frustrated if you're late to a class you paid for. There's no empathy or thought that people have a life outside of class. Good at responding to emails.
Dr. Hassert is a good instructor and you will learn alot even if you are taking COMM as a pre-req. He explains things very well and if you're someone who needs your hand held, this is your guy. Lots of emails, group discussions/talks -quizzes are easy if you read the material. He takes himself a bit too serious though (must call him Doctor)
Best Teacher ever. I have never learned so much in all of my years in school. Please take his class he is wonderful
Hassert expects too much. His syllabus is clear and passing this class is easy if you meet all his requirements. His long list of requirements. he's funny and respectful, he sets a tone to make everyone feel at peace. take his class if you want to be pushed extra hard
Joe really cares about his students. At first, I was very skeptical of his silly approach, but by the end of the class, he had brought out the best in all of us. He's insightful, funny, and extremely compassionate.
One of the best professors I had. He is really clear on his grading. He is not a tough grader when it comes to the speeches. He cares about your success. Definitely take him you will not regret it.
Awesome professor who gives great feedback. 4 speeches, the first and last are easy 2-3 minutes and the other two are informative and persuasive speeches. Take his class?
He's nice, and the class is easygoing. Easy, weekly quizzes are given online. He gives good feedback, but there are times when he subtly makes an insensitive comment in front of the class about someone's speech. The class is laid back&mostly consists of group activities. To the nervous people: everything will be fine. Do all speeches and attend!: )
He is a great teacher. I feel more confident than I was before thanks to his class. There are 4 speeches and quizzes. He gives you enough time to finish all the assignments on time. I would 100% recommend his class.
Grades on four speeches with quizzes on certain textbook chapters in between. 1st and last speeches are easy and the 2nd and 3rd require an outline with note cards. final exam is easy ( questions similar to previous quizzes) compassionate teacher that responds fast to emails. Understanding as he graded my speech 2 outline near end of the semester.
Professor Hassert does a wonderful job in providing clear expectations and feedback on speeches. There are weekly tests, given online based on the reading, while the final is taken in class. Attendance is not mandatory but there are days of random in class participation days that count towards grade. Ask for help and he will assist.
Professor Hassert is great. He gives great feedback on your speeches and lets you know exactly what you need to work on to improve your public speaking skills. The book was only used a few times but it did come in handy. His rubrics are very clear so follow that and you'll do just fine.
4 major essays. Makes you print a lot. Great feedback. Do not procrastinate in this class and make sure to rehearse your speeches.
Wonderful teacher LGBTQ friendly. Very nice and passionate about his job and teaching!
I enjoyed his class throughout the semester. Very respectful and intelligent professor. Make sure to be on his good side or else, you will see why. He also works with your schedule. You can miss a speech day and plead to him, he will offer you another attempt next class. Overall hes class is legit.
I took Dr. Hasserts COM 101 class, and I have truly enjoyed being in his class. He perfectly gives an example of what a public speaker should be like just from his own delivery, and it inspired me so much. He creates a welcoming environment, so everyone in the class works as a team and motivates each other. You will learn so much from him. :)
You don't really need the textbook since all the quizzes are pretty easy and the final is based on them. It's mainly based on the 4 speeches you have to give and participating in class. It's not super hard but it mostly depends on how good you are at public speaking.
He is the best. Follow the requirements. Practice your speeches. He goes above and beyond for any problem you have. If I can get a good grade in this class with no public speaking experience ever, you can too.
Great Professor. He gives good feedback. He actually cares for his students and their grades. Very understanding when you have an emergency. 10/10 would recommend taking his class.
Dr hassert makes you feel comfortable in class and forces you to engage in class with others which makes a great atmosphere for speeches. I took com 3 times and dropped it each time because I was way too nervous but I finally passed com!
Great Professor! Get him! No doubt he's the best. Will take again, I'm writing this in a hurry, but he's great.
Dr Hassert is AMAZING, he truly cares about his students and his passion for communication is obvious. He can get a little off track when teaching but he cares about his students is always willing to help you with any assignments. He makes class fun and worth attending.
He is literally the best! I was nervous of taking com 101 but he made me look at communication in a whole different light. Now I have a ton of great knowledge that will prepare me for public speaking anywhere. Thanks Dr. Hassert.
Dr. Hassert's online class is easy, but there's a lot of HW. Each week you read a chapter of the book and take a quiz, sometimes 2 chapters a week. You will also need to participate in discussions. Speeches are a huge part of your grade so make sure you follow the rubric. Quizzes are still required on weeks when your speeches are due. Good class!
Dr. Hassert is an amazing professor. 100% recommend! He gives really good feedback, and his lectures are very enjoyable. I really enjoyed having him as my COM 101 professor. He wanted the class to get to know each other. The speeches themselves were very straightforward - just practice!! Dr. Hassert is also good looking so extra points for that!
Professor Hassert is a really good teacher, only thing hes really strict with what wants. He is really chill teacher and not too many assignments only quizzes on each chapter of textbook and 4 major speeches. Class is pretty easy if you pay attention and do your work on time.
Professor Hassert was such an amazing professor. He is very organized and clear on what he wants from his students and quick to help out. We had weekly quizzes (based on the book), no Mid-Terms, 3 speeches, and a final exam. I learned so much from this class, especially from Prof. Hassert's online lectures. Definitely recommend this professor!
very great professor. super straight forward when it comes to speech performances. gives you great feedback to improve. awesome overall.
if youre taking this class for a prerequisite you can find someone way easier. 4 speeches, 2 were 2-4min and 2 were 5-7min. short speeches you were allowed 1 index card on the others 4 cards. dont buy the textbook it was only used for the online take home quizzes which you can just borrow the library book. attendance was only graded 12 days
Professor Hassert was a amazing teacher to have this semester. Make sure you show up to class if not youll loose easy points and they do add up. Follow instructions on speeches. Dont be afraid to ask questions. He tells you all you need to know to pass. You will need the book for online quizzes. Have fun and relax and you will do fine .
Amazing class. Highly recommend
Really easy going, but he does have a specific criteria he wants you to follow during speeches--not difficult though. Offers a lot of extra credit, so unless you're lazy or don't show up, there's no way you can't pass.
Very understanding and willing to work with you. Always gets back to you as soon as he can. Took this over summer and was not too much work. You do need 9 people to watch your speeches so be aware. Besides that everything is reasonable.
Great teacher. Show up on time and participate, you will get a good grade.
Not a difficult class at all as long as you try by following the outlines he provides, and showing up to the speeches. There are participation points especially the in class exercises but overall youll get a good grade plus learn a lot about public speaking. It really helped me get outside my comfort zone in front of a class and speak up.
A great prof, clearly passionate about Com studies and I dislike lectures but his were so interesting. He works with anyone that's confused until they really understand the concepts. He offers so many extra chances like retakes for midterms etc. The textbook is your best friend. He posts detailed rubrics for everything and in depth study guides.
A great professor! I enjoyed this class very much. He works very well with you when you need help, very understanding and gives a lot of feedback. His assignments are very detailed and easy to follow. Weekly quizzes at the end of the week that you'll need the textbook for but other than the online quizzes you don't really need the textbook.
The professor genuinely cares that you are able to learn the material and apply it to your speeches. All assignments have very clear expectations. Workload primarily consists of chapter readings and quizzes along with three speeches. You'll have ample time to complete these along with effective guidance provided by the professor.
Public speaking is one of my weaknesses and he definitely made me work for my grade. Gives great feedback on all assignments and speeches. He gives you plenty of time to prepare so take advantage of it. Weekly quizzes and reading assignments are assigned, but they are easy as long as you read the material.
I took Hasserts online comm 101 class. Only 3 speeches. Fair and clear grader. Highly suggest him. Just be prepared no matter who you take this class online with you have to have 9 people in you audience that you provide. Take Hassert. You wont regret it.
originally all of our speeches had to have audience members but because of covid he allowed us to have one
Dr. Hassert really cares for his students & he wants to see you succeed in his class! It was a total of three speeches, weekly quizzes on the chapters assigned for the week. You will work for your grade, but he gives great feed back and responds in a timely manner if you have any questions!
Prof. Hassert was an easy grader. The textbook is mandatory HOWEVER, he gives us an online like for the textbook so no need to buy anything. He posts lecture videos but they're not required to actually watch them, they're just there if you need them. Quite a bit of work but it's an easy A if you do the work. He cares about his students.
I took Professor Hassert for Com 101 online and it was great. 3 speeches 2 outlines, chapter quizzes & the final. Due to COVID you only need 1 person to do your speech in front of. The speech topics were easy. The book was a free PDF so that was a plus. He gave great feedback and graded everything in a timely manner. Also gave extra credit.
I took Com101 with Prof. Hassert during the Fall 2020. He's very caring and not the much work to do. 3 speeches, 2 outlines, critical thinking quizzes, and 1 final. You only need 1 person as an audience for speeches and gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities but can only do 4. He's very helpful grate feed and emails you back ASSP! Essay A!!
Dr. Hassert is a good solid teacher. He presents very well and is passionate about helping you achieve your goals. He is kind and caring and very thorough. It is not the easiest class, but not the most difficult. You do not have to purchase a textbook, but he gives you a pdf version. You only get one chance at the quizzes so read the chapter.
I took Prof Hassert for communication 101 for my nursing degree and he was amazing! 3 speeches - introduction, informative, and persuasive. 13 Quizzes - he provides the book for you online. Very very clear grading criteria and syllabus with course outline so you know exactly what to expect. He gives great feedback and very friendly! Take him!
The class is so easy! He has three speeches for you to do as well as chapter quizzes based on the FREE textbook. Chapter quizzes are open note, I will tell you if you don't at least skim the chapter you will score poorly on quiz. However, quiz is word for word of text book! He was amazing to learn from and the class was convenient for me.
I took this class this summer. This class is A LOT of work but it is definitely worth it. He is super organized and provides many great resources for you to succeed. The book is FREE. I would only recommend you to take this class in the summer if its the only class you are taking. You will enjoy this class more during a 16 week semester.
Professor Hassert does his job well! I've genuinely learned a lot about my current relationships in my life, & I've been able to have a better relationship with someone close to me because of this class. Although, I think there was FAR too much detailed work in this class that was borderline like an AP class. I got an A because I worked my butt off
Only had three major speeches to worry about the whole semester. Textbook provided and FREE! We had to read chapters and got quizzed on the content, but it's easy. Online course was fine, I just had to record myself talking in front of one other person. I took this for the credit but I enjoyed it, I even learned some stuff if you can imagine that.
Believe me, u will love him..... A lot of speech to write but with his directions and feedback, you will nail it!!! Lockdown for the test. 1 person in front of you for the speech. a lot of time and help from him to have a better grade!! You have to take thee class definitely take thee, class, with him.
If you want an easy going professor, take this one. He gives great feedback on speeches and his quizzes are not difficult (3 total I think) and there are 3 total speeches as well. Follow his syllabus and grading rubrics carefully, because if you don't, you will get docked off points. Overall, super easy, light work, and light reading!!
I am not the biggest fan of public speaking, but this Professor helped build my confidence in it from an online course! He has 3 speeches, 2 full sentence outlines, and concept quizzes along with smaller quizzes and discussions. Super engaging and provides helpful feedback quickly! You have to put in the effort, but if you do you will pass.
Fair grading, concise expectations & good course work flow. Free textbook online. Requires three video recorded speeches in front of one audience member (PRACTICE). Print out all quizzes with the answers- these are on the final exam. Nice and has a sense of humor. Would take his class again.
This communications class was not a check the box, minimum effort type of class. I received an A but it was the hardest A this semester to earn. That said, Dr. Hassert is very clear in communication and expectations. He care about his students, communicates excellently and is encouraging. Although this class was hard, I enjoyed it thanks to him.
Really nice professor. Always gives helpful feedback for speeches and multiple resources in order to prepare for those speeches.
Professor Hassert was probably one of the best professors I have taken. Goes over material clearly and often. A couple quizzes here and there, but nothing too hard. Follow directions for speeches and you'll have an easy A and a good time. Attendance mostly needed for speeches and speech preparation though.
Professor Hassert was a very good COM 101 Teacher, Aspects of the course were easy, with that being said, he is an awfully tough grader on his speeches, very nit picky, but also very fair. He Gives plenty of oppurtunities to pass, wasn't an easy A, but definitly will pass you if you put more than minimum effort. Effort not enough, must do correctly
The class is pretty straight-forward. You read a textbook (free) and take open-note quizzes on them (lockdown). There are 3 speeches and 3 outlines. You are expected to choose a thesis before you write your speech. Although you need to put in effort for an A, it isn't impossible to get. He provides clear feedback that helps you improve each speech.
A very understanding and nice professor! 3 speeches throughout the semester and each time he provides good feedback on how to improve. Textbook needed for the class is also free!! Quizzes are simple, not an insane amount of reading either. Would definitely recommend taking his class!
Provides textbook. Only 3 speeches and he is an easy grader. Quizzes almost every week but they are easy.
Do not take this course in the summer. The material should be learned over the course of 16 weeks not 8. Watch all the lectures provided in the modules, it is not very organized, but take the time to find every possible thing. States what he wants in the videos so follow that. Quizzes on each chapter.
Always hated public speaking, but his class was great. Grading criteria are extremely clear, and he sets you up for success. Chapter quizzes are easy too even if you read only somewhat thoroughly. One of the most, if not the most passionate and entertaining professors by far. Only need 2 people for audience, other profs require 5. W Professor fr ong
This class requires a lot of heavy reading (he provides the textbook). It's not an easy class so you do have to try and do the work the best you can! In this class, 11 Quizzes, 4 Reflections, 6 Discussions, 4 Images, 1 Analysis Paper, 2 Speech Videos, 1 Final. However, the professor is so nice and provides good feedback.
Provides clear and good feedback depending on what you need to improve on. Did a chapter quiz about every week along with assignments. Gave three speeches and two video assignments that were newly added.
Great Class! Made up of 3 Main Speeches, 3 Thesis (1/2 sentences abt topic of speech), 3 full speech outlines, 3 short exercise speeches, weekly textbook quizzes (Multiple Choice & very easy), 3 "concept" quizzes (easy written response, no time limit), and a couple of easy discussion posts, a few other miscellaneous, none of the work is difficult.
Great Professor! He gives out quizzes weekly based on the textbook (free), but they aren't difficult. You'll ace the speeches if you follow the rubric which he gives out the day he assigns a speech (only 3 in the semester). Super chill dude in class. This class is easy to pass as long as you put effort in.
This professor is really great, and his course was easy, straight to the point, and a good time. There is a decent amount of work, nothing too hard or too long, but you do have to put time aside to do the speech outlines, the weekly quizzes, the discussions, etc. Super forgiving on the grading and textbook is free too! Don't slack on the speeches!
If you are nervous about taking this course, don't be. Prof. Hassert truly cares about his students and gives great feedback. His course is very well organized and he advises you from the beginning what is expected out of this course. 3 major speeches are required but he will give you all the tools necessary to pass his class.
THE BEST COM 101 PROFESSOR AT CSN BY FAR. TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM. HE IS THE MOST GOATED AND W PROFESSOR EVER. BROS NOT ONLY AN AMAZING PROFESSOR BUT THE CLASS IS ALSO GREAT. He is very clear in what he expects, so it's very easy to earn close to full points on speeches, and all the other work (quizzes, outlines, etc) are ez light work. EASY A+!
Makes public speaking so much less intimidating! Guidelines are really clear and easy to follow, he gives encouraging yet helpful responses, and shows a genuine care for his students. I would recommend this class to anyone, regardless of if it's part of your major! Everyone should learn public speaking and Hassert is the guy to learn it from.
Made me more confident about my public speaking skills. Three main speeches count as "exams," but they are super easy if you listen to his videos and do the quizzes. He gives clear feedback and is genuinely a nice guy. Would recommend this class!
Dr. Hassert was a great professor. He was very engaging and makes you want to participate in class. I wish most professors had his chill personality. Class was very easy, there were 3 main speeches and they counted more towards your grade than the exam, which is fair in my opinion. Grading was also fair. I would definitely take his class again.
He gave a ton of insight and interaction. I hate public speaking and got an A in this online class. I had to have two people in my recorded videos as participants of the speech. I worked hard for this A. Lots of discussions. But I would take it again.
While Professor sets high standards, meeting all requirements and adhering to the rubric doesn't always guarantee a perfect score. There have been instances where minor issues, such as having a works cited page, have led to deductions. However, despite having included a works cited page exactly where required, I was surprised to receive deductions.
Chill guy. 3 main speeches which make up the bulk of your grade but you have more than enough time to write them and practice delivering them. Weekly multiple choice quizzes from the textbook and/or a short answer concept quiz on non-speech weeks. As long as you put in the work, you should be fine.
As nerve-wracking as presentations are, Dr. Hassert made them fairly simple. He takes the time to give each student good feedback on their speeches and is extremely kind at that. Follow his instructions, participate, and ask for help if needed! There were 3 total speech videos and you needed an audience of 2 people. Dr. Hassert was awesome!
I enjoyed having Professor Hassert as my professor. Although his grading could be unpredictable, even when you felt confident about your work, he believed no speaker is perfect and graded accordingly. Overall, he was accommodating and always provided feedback. I would retake this course.
weekly quizzes that were based off of the online book. I skipped a speech and just decided to not make it up even though I could have. If my thesis was okay he would give me a grade but allow me to fix it and get the higher grade. I struggled with my speeches but he graded me better than I thought I would get.
Id say Dr. Hassert is an okay professor. The work is a bit difficult, and a bit overcomplicated. I Know 3 other people took this same class at UNLV, and said it was easier than Hasserts class. This is as hard as an AP Course.
I took COM 101 in person with Prof. Hassert. The weekly quizzes were easy and consisted of a few questions from our FREE online textbook. He has a clear rubric for speeches and grades them nicely. As long as you make some sense and sound confident, hell will give you at least a C for every speech. His class made it easier for me to public speak.
Professor Hassert was great - he provided helpful feedback on speeches and made public speaking less daunting. The workload was manageable, and unstuck AI was a useful tool for preparing quizzes.
he's an alright teacher, a little passive agressive, but other than that just do your work and try your best and you'll be fine.
I took this class because of the ratings he is very kind and understanding when it comes to certain things. But be Warned, there's a ridiculous amount of assignments. Working and having a healthy life can take up a lot of time; having at least 3 assignments due each week, alongside watching multiple 15+ min. videos, which led to very long nights.
Professor Hassert is actually a funny guy, yet super knowledgeable. I don't like public speaking, but Dr. Hassert made his class enjoyable. He assigns you to make outlines for your speeches, they can be a bit time consuming but by being productive AND rehearsing your speech you are going to do well. Easy online quizzes abt the txtbook. Great guy !
Have to at least get a 94% to get an A, and grades very hard even when you follow his instruction, which weren't always clear. Made extra credit almost impossible to attend and then wouldn't be flexible on any alternatives. Not very responsive to questions, or clarification on instructions. Talks about himself all the time.
Professor Hassert is very kind and understanding. He gives amazing feedback when it comes to how one can improve their speech or body language, etc. Free textbook, which is amazing. I would recommend this class for anyone that is not good at public speaking.
Highly recommend he made the class super easy he does give extra credit opportunities and is understanding and always accessible to answer any questions. He makes you submit outlines which help you with preparing for the speeches and provides good feedback lots of quizzes but super easy to take.
