A really entertaining and interactive teacher. If you go to every class and take notes you will do well. Weekly quizzes are open note. Projects are interesting and original.
Really great teacher.Willilng to help when needed. Test are fair but easy, gives you the essay question one week befor. Quizes once a week(open note).
Really great teacher. Tests are open note. Final exams use the same questions from the weekly tests, word for word. He gives you the tests to study. Only two major assignments that were fun.
This is a fun teacher and class. Map assignments and quizzes every week - keeps you from back sliding. Fun projects and interesting lectures. I like him a lot and will be majoring in Geography because of this class.
Interesting class. I took to fufill physical science requirement, and ended up really enjoying the class. He is very helpful if you go to him with questions. Awesome teacher
Very cool instructor. Laid back, not very difficult, and appreciates class participation. I recommend this class if you need a social science requirement fullfilled or are into geography.
Great teacher. Understands his material and tries to make it exciting for his students.
Self absorbed, foolish and pretentious
Awesome teacher. Really easy and interesting. Weekly Quizzes and Maps. Open Notes to Quizzes and 75% of Final Exam Questions are given to you before the test. Only bad thing is, he is a LIBERAL even though he says he's independent.
Ejoyable to be in class. Looked forward to going every day. Not much hw. Fill out maps once a week and weekly quizes. Final is made up of 75% quiz Q's, so you have the answers before the test. Good professor.
Very confusing and hard. Claims he's there to help but never at his office hours. Took a vacation right before a huge project was due and wasn't available for help. Sylabus is littered with typos as are the map assignments making it difficult to complete. Not a good teacher at all.

One of the best teachers and classes I've had in 2 years. He is very funny and helpful. The tests are practically handed to you (you get all the multiple choice questions in the quizzes). Just show up for class to get the notes and the rest is pretty easy.
his class is fine if he likes you, if not you may find it harder to get along. either way you can get an A if you turn in the homework
The weekly quizzes and maps aren't too hard, the midterm, final, and the project are tough though.
Teacher knows his stuff. Very organized, skilled lecturer, never lets the subject get boring, has a passion, young and energetic, positive demeanor, notes during quizzes very helpful, grading very fair and leveling, office hours convenient, fun class.
unclear.... didnt like the whole essay question tests..( if your a good writer go for it).... he did try to keep it interesting ... good sense of humor... hates when you leave class... always says a smart remark to the class, as u leave...
Very easy class, if you take notes. Almost don't need to read the book, most quiz questions are from lecture, and tests are taken from quizzes. Gives one project, make sure to get on it once assigned. Easy grader, easy class if you pay attention
Hasty is so frigging awesome! I took cultural geography first and liked him as a teacher so much that I took physical geography, too. He's smart and funny, class was never boring.
He uses a good balance between seriousness and humor when he teaches. Interested in what you have to say. Lectures are usually very clear. Midterm isn't too bad if you prepare for the essay questions. WATCH OUT for the topography project, though! Start it early!!
Not too bad of a class. This subject isn't my favorite but Mr. Hasty made it fun & interesting for the time being. I would reccommend him to other students-his lectures are needed to pass the class...so you'd have to go to class! :)
Awesome teacher and super energetic. Quizzes every week make going to class imperative. Very knowlegable and funny. Don't procrastinate on the project. midterm and final are essay (study your butt off) and mult. choice. Great guy and super hot
This class rocks. Before I took Joe's lectures, I thumbed thorugh the book and thought this is really boring, but now I love it. Joe can take you any place you would really like to go. He can find all the hot spots if you know what I mean. Don't forget me JH. I could never forget you. Please call back and remove the caller block off your ph.
Worst online class ever! I've taken 8 online classes and by far the hardest, most unreasonable class to date. You have to read a chapter a night and do a quiz a day and some weird project. I'm surprised on his quizes he doesn't ask for the color shoelace the guy in the picture has on. Maybe his normal lecture class is ok, but not his online.
The class is really hard, but Mr. Hasty is very helpful. It is alot of work to get done in 4 weeks, but as long as you try you should pass. Maybe not the grade you wanted, but either way you pass. Good teacher, hard class.
Hasty is the man, his class is hard, but he makes it fun. Even at 7:45 he can get you engaged and having fun. His teats are hard, but he gives you many of the questions and all essay questions beforehand. One of the best teachers I've ever had
As long as you read the text your ok! My class was 6 weeks so you had at least 3-6 tests a week and it was a ton of reading and testing, and a few of the question were really hardd. But if you read you'll be fine, don't even worry about the lectures and the powerpoint. Oh and the midterms and finals have 5 essay questions at the end so be prepared.
Great teacher. Somewhat easy class if you take notes and study for the tests very helpful during class and office hours. Class is interesting and he makes learning geog. fun. Take this class.
he is helpful and grades fairly. summer online course was intense and hard. but at the end he kinda curved the grade and i got A!!! one project, 2-3 quizzes on chapter reading every week, 1 exam (midterm/final) every other week with short essay questions. I'd say do the reading, ask lots of questions, participate in all discussions & work REAL hard
I took it because I needed more useless classes for GE and GEO wasn't as easy as I thought. I thought it was a waste of time. I spent more time studying for this class than my Calculus class.

Joe did an awesome job of making this class interesting. Don't slack off though and I wouldn't reccomend taking this class during the summer (by what I read on another comment). I took and dropped this class twice before I finally had a teacher that was in
Very interesting teacher. Knows his subject, and makes you understand and even enjoy it. The one drawback, It's a little difficult.
I am taking the online course. It is a bit of a challenge, but if you talk to him he will offer suggestions to help you out.
great teacher. has a cans for books option where you donate cans you get to borrow the text for the semester instead of paying 100+ for a book. very helpful and always makes class interesting. tests are a little hard, but not if you really study and take good notes.
His classes are ridiculous. He teaches lower division GE courses like they are upper division classes at a four year school. He totally fails the attitude test...he has short man's mentality which probably keeps him from getting a better teaching postition.
This class blows his quizzes and exams are extremely hard and come from such a random question bank that its nearly impossible to study for it, he offers little help and has an annoying cocky attitude. Avoid this class and this teacher
he is great, knowledgeable and very well organized. recommended to everyone to take his classes.
This class was a challenge (part of which liked this class so much) for me, I still have to do my last test online, I don't even know if I am passing this class, but I have to admit that Hasty is an awesome teacher and the class overall is very interesting and hard. Just one thing, don't ever hesitate on asking him for help!
Trust me, read and take good notes. Quizzes are pretty damn hard, exams are pretty damn hard. If you have extenuating circumstances then he'll be lenient, but otherwise be on time with your work. If you like a challenge then take him.
Bad class. I got a B, and probably got the highest grade in the class. The average test grade in the class was about a C-. Didn't curve, test questions weren't answered in the assigned chapter but in the ones after. If you complain he just says study harder. Maybe it's better if it isn't online. But I doubt it.
Terrible. Completed quizzes weren't available to review/study when they're suppose to be. Links to lecture notes did not work before and on the day of the midterm. Quiz dates were wrong, and calendar dates were wrong. Project tutorial was not available on the day stated. I don't think he knows how to use a computer.
i had all A's and B's until this class. i got a C, the class was hard, but suprisingly i was very interested all semester long. its kind of bitter sweet.
the worst thing to happen to school
Terrible online teacher. All he does is assign chapters from the text. He doesn't explain anything and he expects too much from an online class. He might be better IN CLASS, but I don't recommend his online class, AT ALL.
well, remember when people wanted to add your class at the beginning of the semester, but you said your class was full, even though you still had plenty of room? I am happy most of your students have dropped your class, you are a concieted person.
If you are looking for an easy A this isn't the class to take. I did enjoy the class though. He doesn't ask standard textbook questions, he asks ones where you have to think and apply what you have learned. The online class was pretty straight forward, read the chapter take the quiz, participate/post in the weekly online discussions.
fun discussion during lectures. Must study hard for exams
Grade is based mostly on quizzes and tests, which are not easy. Standard participation through online message board. If you have the time to read a lot then this class is fine, otherwise avoid it.
Online! He was very responsive to email and questions. I could have used alot more feedback about my work. Unfortunately with an online class you just get a final grade on each assignment without the notations about what you did wrong. This was a hard class in terms of absorbing a lot in a short period of time. Almost all info is from textbook.
I took this class online. I wasn't trilled with Mr. Hasty at first, but that's because I didn't do well on the first few quizzes. If you follow his directions and keep up with the assignments you'll learn a lot and do just fine. He's a good teacher.
He is really enthusiastic about this subject. Students are responsible for the information-- he doesn't spoon-feed you. Heavily based on the textbook, so if you can read, you're set. The class really makes you ready to expand your study skills and mastery of different subjects. Hard class, but I got a B just fine.
good teacher many donot like him because his tests are hard but you will learn alot from him if you stick with it!
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken. Prepare to take really hard quizzes ever monday. Everything is based heavily on a really densely written, hard textbook that was the bane of my existance the entire semester. Hasty is a really friendly guy and will help those who ask for it. Really hard midterms. I learned some interesting things though.
Fantastic teacher. Really loves the subject matter and loves to teach!
He really knows what he is talking about, and he seems to enjoy teaching. The mid-terms and final are hard, but he helps you a lot and if you study you will be fine. This class is really interesting, and I would definitely recommend everyone to take it.
I'm sure hes a funny guy and fun teacher, but his class was just too hard. You have to be one of those people who can read fast and comprehend everything and absorb insane amounts in short amount of time. I have a 3.84 and I have no idea how people pass this winter online class!
Class was insane over the winter session 3 weeks to read a 600 page book, read 15 discussion, 15 quizes, 2 mid terms 1 final, 15 short answer assignments, 15 maps which take an hour each. Material is dense. Uses trick qustions on everything, I can't believe I passed. DONT TAKE UNLESS NO OTHER CHOICE
He is a nice guy and fun to talk to but the class is difficult. you must do a lot of reading. the lectures are not to helpful unless you read ahead of time. the quize's are hard and he does weather he says it or not he does use's trick questions which can come back to bite you.
One of the best instructors I've ever had. If you go to class, take notes, and show up for the quizzes you'll do just fine. Super cool personality and puts complicated stuff into layman's terms. I changed my major to Geography because of him!
Thanks Joe! You changed my life. I took Geog 002 for Spring 2008. Sure the class is hard, but doable.Your going to have to study. Just hang with the class and he gives extra credit time to time. Just show up, and for the rest of us,, don't text in class;it's really lame! Joe is a great instructor!
He is one of the best teachers i've ever had. He makes things really easy to understand and he fun to look at.
his class is pretty cool, if you dont mind a lot of work and such. if you read before the lectures and do the stuff online, you can do c work on a test and still pass. hes also a pretty interesting guy to listen to, but he gets really mad if you text in his class.
I think Joe Hasty is a smart guy, but tries to entertain rather than teach. He is really happy to be from Los Gatos, and boasts about his mispronunciation of the word. His textbook policy is awesome. You can bring in cans of food for a textbook. All in all the class is easy, and entertaining. I made the mistake of wanting to learn. If your idea of
HE IS HOTTTTTTT!!!...that's all the motivation i need to go to class..=)
His class was insane, he is bad. He is one of the teachers that enjoys when the students suffer. He uses a lot of tricky questions in the tests. You have to laugh when he says something that he thinks is funny, because otherwise he will say that you are a bad class. He thinks that we do not have other choice, but go to Mission. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
This class was a pain!!!! I don't know how I passed. Do not take him!!!
Good overall teacher. Entertaining class, yet still somewhat challenging. He uses examples to make subject matter relevant to student lives. Tests are slightly difficult but he offers good study tools. Young guy. He relates to students and assigns plenty of simple assigments to boost your grade up.
His class was nice, i enjoyed going. his tests are difficult if you dont study for them. If you dont study then you will probably fail them. With that said he gives you the possible essay questions for tests and the tests require studying but if you study and do your work a B is realistic
Avoid him!!!!
Hasty is a good man. The class is challenging and definitely requires reading/studying. The tests are tough but he has a lot of filler assignments to make up for that. He's funny and makes the class interesting which makes a world of difference. If you show up and have a borderline grade he will round up which is much appreciated. Thanks Hasty!
I thought that I must fall sleep in a GE class. Joe made it fun and interesting. Yes it doesnt mean that the class is easy!!!you have to read your textbook, every week for open NOTE quizes. Its hard to fail this class as it is hard to get A. great distribution of points through out the semester. He is a nice guy, Always there to help.
He made it easy to retain the material. His humor made the class fun and interesting. He gives out ALOT of points so if you're bad at test taking it wont hurt you. Attendance may not be manditory, his lecture mke it worth it, this is coming from someone who hates going to class. GREAT INSTRUCTOR!
This teacher has interesting material, but he likes trick questions on his tests. He is hard and I didn't find him helpful.
Very interesting. A lot of information but he makes it easy and fun to learn. Also very nice to look at ;)
Took a class he filled in for at Las Positas, talks about food too much around dinner time, but is eloquent, intelligent, and really cares about both the subject and giving everyone a shot at really learning the material
Fantastic teacher who is well organized and 100% passionate about what he does. Very structured in his lessons mixing in interesting facts with his own sense of humor. Just show up to class and do the work and you won't regret that you took his class!
He's a really smart fella, he know's what he's talking about, but this class is not easy. I suck at science, but I actually like what I learn in his class, and I am gonna pass. He's a good teacher, I'd recomend him, really funny guy.
Great online class. Read the book and have it handy when taking the online quizes. If you take it over the summer, be prepared to NOT have a life. (seriously). Take it during fall or spring. Easy to get an 'A' if you read everything really well. Took it for IGETC and found myself really liking it. Recommended.
Took online class. Awesome teacher! Class was a lot of work but interesting information and easy to do.
Nice enough, has a sarcastic sense of humor, but not all of the time. Makes you do a ton of work, you will have homework every week. Exams were impossible, quizzes were hit or miss, but hey at least he's hot.
Love/ hate this class! The teacher is very funny and relatable and class seems easy. Don't be fooled study hard and take notes. The tests hard. They can make you or break you. Do everything you can for points.
He is a really funny teacher! Going in to the class I though I might fail because I hate this subject. However, he made this class really fun and made me want to go every day. It's important to go and pay attention, but he sets up the class so the midterms/final don't make or break you. Great class, great teacher!
hard online class. quizzes are very detail focused.
Mr. Hasty is really nice and funny. He likes when you laugh at his jokes. If you show up to class you shouldn't have any trouble passing the class. Do the easy assignments online and dont worry about the tests that much. Hard to get an A, but easy to pass.
Pretty good online course. Some material was outdated and didn't correspond and there are question on tests that don't make sense. But the class is so easy that it doesn't really matter.
Attendance is pretty much mandatory. It's a lot of busy work-but that helps take the emphasis off tests (3 big ones). Concepts are usually pretty easy. And he has examples for everything. He's hilarious! the only bad thing is since there's so much busy work all the little points add up.
Had Hastey for Geo1 and Geo2. Hard material. Need to be on top of things and DO THE WORK! Great teacher for Geo1 and did online for Geo2. It won't be the easy A everyone wants but nice to see we have to work our butts off for a change.
I'm usually not phased by professors' intimidating orientation lectures.Joe's orientation for the online winter class scared me enough to it immediately. The point of taking online classes is to have flexibility, but he schedules midterms at specific times and work isn't an excuse to skip one.Take his class only during a regular semester.
Cool guy, he had really-really interesting classes, and homeworks.
Great class, great teacher, made for an awesome semester. He gives you study guides and is super helpful
Simple guy, very nice and entertaining. He prepares you well for exams and quizzes. I Really enjoyed his class.
This teacher should not teach an online class. Some of the question on quizes were not directly and clearly stated in my book. If you really want the right answers you should get the newest edition for the book. He says you can read any edition. Did not teach at all. he only gave us what to do. Anyone can teach this class like he does.
I took summer class - 4 weeks. It was insane. Tons of text, reasearch, videos and so on. Very hard to cover for such a short period of time especialy if you have other classes or work. Quizes and tests were tough. Don't take it as a summer class. Take it only throughout semester!
His online class is difficult. There's 15HW, 10 map assignments, 15 quizzes, and a online discussion (MUST DO) EVERY week including 2 midterms and 1 final (be online ON TIME for exams or you'll miss it). Don't do his work at the last minute, his online videos runs up to 1 hour and up. He gives very little extra credit. Interesting subject but hard.
Good guy, really cares about his students. I took this class because I was enrolled in the GIS certificate program. I quit the program because of all the classes I took he was the only instructor I liked.
You will do a lot of busy work and a lot of studying for this class, but it is possible to get an A. He is hilarious. Lots of fun.
There is a lot of busy work, but the class is fun and you will learn much. He makes it easy to get an A or B and the busy work is actually relevant and worth your time. Highly suggest these classes.
He's a younger teacher, has a lot of info he's passionate about but gives you TOO much info plus TOO much reading. I was getting bad grades on tests and asked to be tutored and he was so unhelpful, he was rude to me also. I was doing poorly in the class and kept worrying about my grade which he had no interest in helping me improve.
A great professor! He gives you a lot of busy work but it helps cushion your grade. You'll do fine if you take good notes, do the reading, and attend classes! Hasty has a great sense of humor which makes the subject matter a lot more fun to learn.
Hasty is a cool guy, he is funny and tries to make his lessons interesting. Going to class definitely helps. He has a quiz every week. He gives you the short answer questions. Over all pretty easy but you have got to be willing to do the work. He assigns homework for the week but its easy. He does a lot of things to help boost your grade!
Professor Hasty is a really cool guy. You can easily tell he has a passion for geography and brings it to class. However, if you struggle with exams, he gives a substantial amount of busy work, map quizzes, video assignments, to boost your grade. Do not listen to the negative reviews. If you come to class prepared and do the work you will be fine!
Easily my favorite professor so far. Explains all subjects clearly and with both passion and humor. Makes you work for your grade but expands your perspective at the same time. Worthwhile class to take no matter what degree you are aiming for... Not an average teacher in any way. Thank you for all you taugh me Hasty!
Online Geog1... absolutely 0 communication. He does not notify students about tests, he doesnt even post lecture outlines or notes. Read chapter, then take a quiz that is completely irrelevant to the contents of the chapter. And if you try to email him with a question it takes him minimum 4 days to get back to you. DO NOT TAKE HIS ONLINE COURSE.
Poor communication skills. Should not allowed to teach online.
Teacher did not participate in class. He posted units and students worked through them on their own. He provided 7 lecture notes out of 15 units. 4 units had links that were no longer valid and it took him 4 days to correct. He did not grade work on time. Apologized for not having midterm and 7 units not graded before final. Worthless teacher!!
He's such a cool teacher. Altho he is super nice and helpful, geo is really dry/ hard class. But just go talk to him when you are having any problems, I'm sure he will help you. Just like he helped me! Good luck guys.
Such a difficult class. Not a big fan of the online experience, and I haven't heard much better from the in class group. The tests and quizzes are darn near impossible to get an A on. Don't take GEO 02 if you're looking for an A, and that's coming from an A student.
Hasty is a great teacher. I had to drop twice out of circumstances beyond my control :( He was willing to work with me despite the difficulties but I wasn't feeling confident enough to continue. There is an assignment and quiz due each week as well as 3 tests and map quizzes. The variety of work being done really allows you to absorb the material.
Doesnt Care to help even when he claims he does. DO NOT TAKE
Here's the trick to getting the "A" you deserve: Do all the assignments. There will be a lot, don't put them off! Do all the review questions for the tests ahead of time. Preparing answers for ALL the review questions will help you big time since 2 questions on the exam are extra credit. Time management is key. Read outside sources too.
Hasty is a good. If you take part on his lectures, make notes you are almost got your A. However, there are quizzes every second meeting. You have to do a lot of homeworks which are time-consuming and mainly worthless. (DO THE HOMEWORK as apprx 13 of your final grade). He gives huge help with extra credits (10-15%). 3 Tests, 15 quizzes and much HW
Difficult class due to the subject, not necessarily the professor. His tests are hard, but he's really clear about them and he's pretty clear about the whole class. He's hilarious and tries to make everything relatable using silly metaphors. You NEED to pay attention, you NEED to attend class (doesn't take roll though), and you NEED to study.
I am a straight A student & took it online. The amount of work was UNREAL. We have to cover 5-7 chapters a week, there is a quiz for each, and an assignment for e chap. The assignments have 10 sections with about 14 parts WITHIN those sections. Keep in mind you still have to read and study for the TIMES 15 MINUTES QUIZES. DONTTAKETHIS
Hasty is funny in his lectures, however they are long (the whole class). you MUST read the textbook, & he requires you to buy an online code for HW assignments. Tests are tough. This class is very time consuming but it's possible to do well. If you show you try and show up to class, he will bump up your grade 1.5%
Teacher is a real bro. Makes you fall in love with geog right off the bat. Uses his work experience a lot. Lectures are super laid back, and you never need the textbook. A bit OCD with his schedule. Tests are a big deal, but easy to study for, non-cumulative final, no papers. Weekly online HW for easy chunk of grade.
An awful instructor. Not in any of my other online classes have been this bad with a West Valley teacher. Zero communication whatsoever, and when you do hear back from him it is a very inadequate response. A lot can go wrong in online classes and you can really tell there is no effort put in on his part to be active in responding to students.
Geography 1 is ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL. This is not a geography class, its meteorology. It requires an absurd amount of rope memorization of global, regional, and local climate patterns. If you're dead set on taking this class, please, for the love of God, take it online so you can at least have a fighting chance on his ridiculous tests.
Mr. Hasty looks like the lovechild of EdwardNorton&JeremeyRenner and he's absolutely hilarious when telling stories during lectures. HOWEVER, his tests are very tough, mostly lecture based, & he doesn't explain things in depth. Study groups are crucial. Only 3 tests & you have to study 15 short answer ?s + 50 TF each test, SA?given 1wk in advance.
I took this class online and it was a lot of work. The online Mastering Geography system was very interactive but it was incredibly extensive. Will not take a class again with this professor because tests are hard and there was way too much work.
I took this class as a summer online class. Initially I really liked the online module, probably the most interactive platform that I have seen in my online classes. There is an exaggerated amount of work, completely unnecessary.
He obviously loves Geography and displays that through his lectures. He often relates what is being taught to real life examples. He has 10 pt. quizzes every Monday, open note. He also is able to balance out the toughness of his test through 3 50 point each extra credit projects.
Joe Hasty is literally the best. He is one of my favorite all time professors. He's real , talks to you like an adult not a student. This class is more than a geography class. He ties in cultural geography and current events. He's super funny, inspires, and his lectures are clear and entertaining. Study and do homework. Lots of extra credit option
I took this class at San Jose State and it was the class I looked forward to every week. He makes you think on a deeper level and he has some really relatable lectures. If you wanna pass the class, you should definitely show up to every class and you MUST do the homework. You have to work to get an A, but his class will change your life.
First this class seemed really hard. He told us his expectations at the beginning, which seemed little hard. After all, with lots of work, I got a really good grade. Lots of extra credit options -if you want to get a good grade, do them! Lectures are fun; however, they don't really cover the material so get ready to read the textbook.
Took this class online, definitely no hand-holding here. Many online teachers email once a week to keep you on track. Not Hasty! Make sure you read the syllabus and write down the assignments in your planner because there won't be a reminder. The tests are hard and they don't reflect the questions on homework AT ALL so make sure you READ the book.
He is a great teacher but his test online are average and you need to study a lot so you can get a good grade in the class. He gives extra credit. I would take him again because his class is interesting and I learn many things about geography.
You must go to every class because the book/online quizzes will do nothing for you in this class. Tests are based on his lectures. Great class though, probably one of the best I've taken in my JC experience.
For online, the assignments are as straightforward as they can get and really don't vary so even though he may not remind you, it's not a big deal. I've heard he's a good prof in person but online, you pretty much never interact with him. He doesn't give feedback and it takes him a long time to give out exam grades. Just read the textbook and do hw
I had to take his class twice and it was horrible both times. He gives a lot of homework and requires you to read basically the whole textbook. If possible take another class.
I enjoyed this teacher. I think the people who are complaining are the ones who are lazy and do not want to make time to do homework. I am a horrible test taker and no teacher has helped me out with this issue except Hasty. He offers plenty of extra credit and you must do the homework if you want to pass.
Well off the chart you will never learn anything, he's one of those guys that's been partying his entire life and now he wants to be a teacher. He gives PowerPoint presentations and almost nothing from the PowerPoint is on the test. His class is just a waste of time and money and you won't learn anything. Just turn in papers and you pass...
I took geography 1&2 online with him and while I'm sure he is interesting teacher in person this is not reflected in his online courses. These classes are incredibly monotonous and have almost identical assignments. I would not recommend taking these classes with him, at least not online because it will feel like a waste of your time.
The course material is pretty difficult for an intro class. The quizzes are open notes but the exams are pretty difficult. However, he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities to make up for it. Hard to get an A but easy to pass if you do the work. Very liberal and outspoken in his political views.
This is a nice professor and will bump up your grade. I took this class in Winter session, that why there are lots of homework and tests. Some of the questions the answers are online. There is a time limit for quizzes and tests, will not have enough time to look up for each answer.
He was a fairly good instructor. Yes, there's numerous textbook reading. But in the end, the homework assignments are pretty easy and clear. Lastly, if you do all the EXTRA CREDIT assignments, you'll be able to pass his class. Otherwise, Fall 2016 was a fun class, I passed it, and he is prety funny at times, when it comes to analogies! :)
This professor he's very political he cares more about talking about politics in about actually teaching you geography he makes fun of people that are from other states he's not helpful he's just a really horrible teacher I would not recommend taking you out on there's a lot of homework the textbook is very expensive he expects a lot out of you
Joe Hasty and his Geography class are like a bag of trail mix. There is an outstanding variety of topics that get covered during the semester. Some of which people may not like, but during the course there will always be something for everyone. Lectures help with the tests, homework is easy, but take it serious. Be ready for lots of food analogies.
It was a difficult subject and a lot to remember, however, he makes his lectures fun. He gives easy homework and extra credit
You should do the reading before the assignments and make sure you respond to the assignments in time. You dont really get feedback or student-teacher interaction, so make sure you stay on top of the assignments yourself.
Truly awesome teacher and would take again. Hasty made geography fun with simple understanding and jokes to go along with it. Although there are jokes, he is really serious about his teaching and helping you learn. If you're the kind of student that actually cares and wants to get a good grade, then please take this class.
I took this class in my first college semester, and it was the only class I looked forward to going to. yes, it takes work, but it's not impossible, and I found it very rewarding. The principles learned in this class, as you will learn, are easily applicable to day-to-day life, and are very interesting.
Workload heavy since the material is condensed for the summer. However, it was nicely organized into 3 sections, so as long as you stay on top of your work each section, there should be no problem. Professor Hasty is super understanding and flexible-- will give you extension if you ask nicely. Overall, smooth and organized online experience.
I am an Adult Life Long Learner and Geography is one of my passions. Working in the field of Tourism we are required to keep abreast of world issues and Cultural Geography with Hasty is "a breath of fresh air". Attending the lectures and doing the readings has been a true eye opener. I really enjoy how Joe presents his lectures. A true gem!
His lectures are amazing and he does a really good job of showing us how geography is applicable in our everyday lives. The tests aren't easy, but if the average is bad, he lets everybody retake it. He also goes over all the short-answer questions (they are actually very long) on the test very thoroughly and gives 100 points of extra credit.
Easy online class, uses Pearson although 99% of answers are on quizlet. Highly recommend for those who need a physical science knocked out.
I took Mr. Hasty for Geography 001. I can honestly say he is very indirect with some assignments. He expects you to know what he wants without telling you which is pretty ridiculous. If you do all your homework and take the quizzes you'll pass with effort.
Everything is on quizlet (even exam q's). This is an easy online winter class but it is a lot of material to go through and a lot of homework assignments so manage your time accordingly. Super nice professor and he will work with you.
There's a map quiz & homework assignment every week. Tests are divided into 2 parts; multiple choice is based on the reading (I think, I never opened my textbook), the second part is free response, gives you 15 prompts in advance goes over all of them before the test, day of the test he picks half. 2 chances for 50 extra credit points. Pretty easy.
The most unfair professor Ive ever had! Very indirect with the materials,he doesnt care if you have accommodation. He doesnt respond back to emails often and if he doesnt like you, you wont be able to pass his class!
I would say that Hasty's GEO 001 class was pretty challenging; more so when it was converted from an in-person to an online class due to COVID-19. However, his MasteringGeo HW did help a lot when it came to preparing for exams. That said, I highly advise not taking his course next semester, especially if your schedule is going to be intense.
Easy online class. Highly recommend for those who need an Area 5 physical GE. Every week there's a map quiz, homework assignment & discussion. I actually enjoyed the discussions. I would post pictures or videos in my responses. 2 Midterms 50 Multiple choice + Short Answer. Final same as midterm. 1 Extra Credit.
Best lectures, truly cared about the material and the students. As long as you go to class and do the homework you'll pass.
I took this class for Winter semester and Ive seen the professor once, during the orientation. Asynchronous class is all about reading a chapter or two for each module, and doing discussions and Pearson assignments and quizzes. In winter 5 modules per week, and Midterm at the end of each week. Use quizlet for easy grades is you need the GE credit
Hasty's lectures are awesome! He manages to make them relevant to every day life. His food analogies actually help a lot! Every week you have a map assignment, textbook assignment, simple discussion post, and quiz. Sounds like a lot but manageable! Two midterms + final broken into two parts: M/C and short answer (open book). A genuinely great dude.
Hasty inspired me to be a geography major. He knows 90% of those taking his class are just for the GenEd and is patient. Lectures can be slow at times but he knows how to make a boring subject interesting. Homework is the EXACT SAME each week. Exams are all take home and open note, and you can complete them any time during the exam week. 11/10
Not a bad professor. All assignments done using outside website, some discussion posts. Doesn't seem like they contributed much outside of just assigning us things from the website. If this is your GE requirement, take this class. Not a lot of work, easy A, just the assignments + using Google Earth was annoying but not all that time consuming.
Async class was chill as long as you set aside the time to do the homework (Pearson online) which took around 2-3 hours a week. Google Earth on the homework was annoying though. Test short answers were drawn from the textbook so you need to read it to know what to write. Great GE class.
Seemingly easy. Lots of busy work that could make you want to pull your hair out. It is all graded automatically through a program. The only thing he grades himself is the short answer midterms and finals. It wasn't a class I enjoyed. He was really nice though, answers quickly and is willing to offer help. Geography is just harder than it sounds
Worst class I've ever had to endure. This material was very difficult to learn on your own. Hasty is barely involved at all; everything is done through a program that grades automatically & asks HIGHLY SPECIFIC questions. LOTS of busy work too. If you reach out for help, he either doesn't respond or is very curt. It seems he hates his job.
Absolutely hated this class. Professor Hasty doesn't teach the class at all, he uses an outside system to "teach" his students, then doesn't offer any help/ support when the online system becomes confusing. The coursework system is incredibly annoying and is filled with a horrific amount of busywork.
Waste of time! The teacher relies on a program for the class, he does not teach at all. The program requires TONS of busy work that takes hours to complete. He grades short answer questions on the test very harshly with zero instructions or feedback on what he is looking for. ZERO feedback. Seems like he hates his job.
Probably the laziest teacher that I have seen in my entire education career. He never responds to email, grades everything late, and worst of all, does not teach at all. We learned everything through MyLab Geography, not through him. Although this is an asynchronous course, I expected that there will be some engagement.
Assignments were time consuming and felt more like busywork than homework. Given that this class was asynchronous, there was very little communication between professor and students.
Excessive amounts of busy work. I do not feel as if I have time to both learn, and do homework. This class does not take into consideration that students may have other classes to take in addition to just this.
The amount of knowledge required for his class is a bit absurd. He dumps so much information on you, and his quizzes / exams are tough unless you naturally know geology concepts. I would not take him if given a choice.
The online class is 100% set up by mind lab. There are no lectures from him. This class is simply read the book and then do hours of meaningless busy work. The tests are extremely hard. 175 pages of reading per exam and the exam questions are trivial (what is the average rain in cm of some country that was said in passing?) DO NOT TAKE
He said he would provide us with the information and tips that we needed for this course but in the end, he canceled the Zoom meeting and never gave me any info. He assigned 15 homework assignments to be done in 5 days. I have work/other activities do to along with other homework and I just don't have time to complete all of those assignments.
This isn't necessarily him, but how he ran his online course, I never even had a chance to talk to the guy, but after an assignment said the answer to the length of Mexico was 3 Tennis Courts I knew that I was going to hate this class. There are so many errors written in the assignments and the program used to do the assignments didn't even work...
This class isn't necessarily hard but it's just hours and hours of busy work that's not engaging with the material at all. I hated how absolutely boring this class was. There were often mistakes in the program. Since the class was async, the teacher didn't teach at all and we had to pay $100 for the program to complete assignments.
Professor Hasty clearly has a passion for geography & makes an effort to engage all of students. Class is harder than expected but definitely manageable.
The class has a heavy workload, but unstuck ai proved to be a helpful study tool alongside the textbook. The professor is somewhat uninvolved, but engaging with the material can lead to good results.
All of the course content is from MyLab. No assignment, test, or quiz was written by the professor. The only thing the professor seemed to write were the 2-3 sentence discussion prompts which vaguely connected to the theme of geography. I had to spend $90 on Pearson to complete assignments and tests. The professor was an extremely harsh grader.
Professor Hasty obviously bought some sort of premade course (and had students pay $100 to access it). How do I know this? Every answer to every question from every assignment can be found online (Quizlet) with the exact same wording! Professor Hasty is in it for the bag, not to teach nor inspire the world's next generation of geographers.
This professor is extremely rude and unprofessional. I ended up dropping the class and during graduation told his friend loudly in front of me that I didn't even pass his class and "I didn't even graduate". No sir, you're one of the worst professors I've ever taken. You're a community college professor, calm down. Received my MBA in May buddy.
Disappointing professor.
don't take this class for your own sanity unless you absolutely have to. I had to end up dropping because I could not keep up; there are 15 assignments due every week but each one has various sections with each individual module including a quiz. this professor is not helpful in the slightest and doesn't even grade anything its all through MyLab
Easy A! I like the platform we use for the homework assignments. It's a lot of reading and pop quizzes.
The worst professor I've ever interacted with: rude, unprofessional, and unresponsive. He ignores emails, misses appointments, and accuses his students of cheating, even after proving otherwise. Totally disengaged, I had to get admin involved. The class had no lectures, just automated material. Avoid this class at all costs. A kid can teach better.
Professor Hasty has a clear passion for geography. I deeply enjoyed learning how to navigate Google Maps and understand Earth Systems. While the written exams are challenging, I loved how they push us for deep reflection. Finally, attending office hours, Professor Hasty gave me a fire reading list, which I look forward to reading over winter break!
