Lots of memorizing! Very boring! Tests come from online quizzes (which some ?'s have the wrong answer)-cuz he used some of these on the final, when I confronted him, he would NOT change the grade! I lost all respect for him.
ASS! He is the most boring teacher and LOVES to confuse you! HE is also VERYYYYY RUDE!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS!!! I was miserable!!!!!!
Uh huh, see what I mean? Someone found out. Now, are you sure you wanna take him? Yeah...I would think twice!
BORING!!!! You will be miserable!!! Lab tests are AWFUL! You go around the room, look at slides and other things. Too much memorizing! I made a D in the class. Thanks to him, my GPA dropped! Don't take him!!!
He SUCKS as a teacher and a person. Smart as* too. Unwilling to help. I needed a C to continue my RN degree and I was one point shy from a C. When I approached him about it, he said that I didn't deserve a "C" or to be an RN.
COME ONE, HE IS NOT BAD. HE TELLS YOU WHAT TO EXPECT AND YOU CAN GET THE MC QUESTIONS FOR TEST OFF OF INTERNET. YOU PEOPLE ARE NOT IN HIGH SCHOOL ANYMORE, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT. YOU REALLY WILL STROKE AT AUBURN...IF YOU EVEN MAKE IT THERE.
He is a good teacher. Expects alot on lab tests but lecture tests are a breeze. I would recommend to someone interested in learning bio. Kind of a skimp on grades and missed classes.
i've been at AU for a year and a half now and haven't met a prof. yet that compares to him! he's TOUGH. i have a 4.0 but it took a LOT of effort in his class. his extra credit is INSANE. a lot of work for one point. even if you don't do good in there, there's still hope for you at AU.
Come on now, hes a good teacher. Your in college now suck it up or you will never make it with a truely hard teacher. If you cant make an A in his class you will never make it at Auburn.
Boring Boring Boring!But fair.Not very helpful and confusing,but like I said fair>
This clas is tough. To me, his lab tests were nearly impossible! There would be like 75 things to memorize plus different categories. Even though I never did well on the lab tests (D's) I tried harder on the REAL tests bc they were worth more points. The bonus @ the end helped me. Made a B! YAY!
I beleive he is a good teacher but you will not make a good grade unless you study. this is college. read the chapter and memorize everything for the lab test and you will make an A. do the bonus its and extra 40 pts. 80% of test material is on the practice exam online. he is not a mean guy
As far as personality goes, he's alright. He'll try to help you, but he won't spoon-feed to you. The class was soooo long, I swear...ugh :P Lab tests were a freakin' nightmare. You HAVE to study ahead of time. I did better on the tests because the questions come from the online site. STUDY STUDY!!!
As far as "teaching" goes, he does that pretty well. Mr Hayes is one of those Biology nuts who knows everything in the world about Biology. His lecture tests are somewhat difficult, but the lab tests are completely asinine. Our Lab Test average in my class was about a 24 (Out 100 points)!
He is really nice, but be ready to work super hard. He also has the worst spelling mistakes on his tests and stuff, thats a bit anoying. I'm not that smart and i got a B, but i don't really feel that i learned the material. OH, and the lab tests were impossible for me, but then i again i am not a biology person! Good luck if you take him!
If you take him, you better study ahead of time. I can't stress enough how hard those lab tests are. Ugh, I still get mad just thinking about his class and that was 3 freakin' years ago!

Overall I enjoyed the class. He is very nice and will go out of his way to help you. Do the bonus, go to class, study at least 12 hrs. for each test, and you should do well. I am a failure in nursing school,(adv. 70) but I made a A in his class. He has a goofy dry personality, but I like it. Class can get boring but hang in their and Study hard!
He's kinda goofy but funny. His jokes crack me up cause he's so corny. The tests are difficult. You need to study study study! I can't say much about the lab tests though. Only "Good Luck!" Overall, it's okay. Definitely do the extra credit!!!
He is a hard teacher. Be prepared to study a lot. I made an 89 and did not miss a single class and he would not give me an A. If you want a good grade use the website that comes in the book it is very helpful.
Not a cake walk class. If you show up to class, take good notes, study, and do your lab you will be fine. He is willing to help you with anything if you ask. Also, if you stay late in lab reviews he will kind of go over what is and isn't on the test. Good teacher and class.
Confusing, miserable, awful.... total he||. That is what is class was. This class should not be as hard as he makes it. He seems to want to show off his smarts and make you feel like a dummy. Study very hard and do any extra credit possible. Lecture test are hard to comprehend. Lab test are generally easy if you come for all labs. Use online manual
I want to cry just thinking about it.
DON'T TAKE HIM...ENOUGH SAID!!!!!!!!!!
I HATED HIS CLASS. I study like crazy for his final and failed it. I am still waiting to find out if anyone passed it. Everyone I have talked to failed it. All but 3 had a C or bleow in his class
I think most of the 104 students liked him, but if you plan to take 102 with Hayes...just DON'T DO IT!!!
My experience was not good. He is not a good professor. He does not teach from the book you mostly have to read and what you read might or might not be on his test
Yall this class was a nightmare!!! I went to class everyday until the last day to drop. I wrote down every word he said in class and still was failing at midterm. He is really a nice guy but like I said the class is a nightmare. He is a microbiologist and expects you to be from day one. His tests cover nothing he says in class...you have to memoriz
This is by far the toughest class/professor I have taken at SUSCC! Lots of new information and scientific language to learn. Read your book chapter before lectures as advised. Keep up with your reading and study, memorize and study!!! I assure you, it is the only way to make an A. Don't try to take another science class at the same time!
He is a nice guy and knows what he is talking about, but he also expects you to know too! His tests are VERY hard! Lecture exams are confusing and you need to read your chapters and search the internet? Lab exams are very tough-you are expected to know Phylums, Class, ect. for different species. I highly suggest to look for a different teacher!
I down right hated this class. I found myself staring at the wall and trying to talk to my friend rather than payin attention to him because he was so boring and taught like u should be a genius to understand what he says.Which really u have to be to get an A. I found myself wantin to get **** before class to just bare it. Horrible teacher..
He's OK, but hard. Tests are very hard, but lab tests are slightly easier. Come to class, take good notes, & STUDY HARD. You'll learn a lot in this class. Oh, & definatly do extra credit, it's worth it. If you do this you'll do fine. Good luck.
HIS CLASS IS VERY HARD.I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO READ THE CHAPTERS AND FORGET THE NOTES THAT YOU TAKE IN CLASS BECAUSE THE LECTURE TEST MY ONLY COVER 10% OF THE NOTES. THIS CLASS WAS VERY HARD FOR ME. BY GRACE OF GOD I CAME OUT WITH A "C". GOOOOD LUCK!!!
Very hard class....Notes are useless, READ READ READ your textbook. Details are big!! easy points for pathogen cards, and unknowns it you know what ur doing. 50 points extra credit at the end and lab manual and lab tests are easy. Just READ READ READ the book for tests and you'll be fine. Awesome professor, tells you awesome info. and is interestin
This class is extremely hard. Be prepared to study constantly. His notes are useless and the book doesn't even supply you with all the info you need. Make sure to take pictures and write details on lab days bc the lab tests are ridiculous. He thinks his students should already know. He is a nice guy and very smart, just not good teacher. DON'T TAKE
awful
omg its like here the book that's your test. when we asked him what was the test going to be like he said read that's all i can tell you. and let me tell you that's alot of stuff to member. do not take this teacher
Terrible teacher. He does not care anything about his students. Do not recommend.
Good professor, pretty funny and keeps the class interesting. Most of the test comes from the book and not the notes. Lecture tests are the difficult parts of this class. Lab tests, lab book, pathogen cards & quizes are not bad. Plus 50 pts bonus. Just read your book as much as you can and you will do alright!
THIS CLASS SUCKED. I HAD TO DROP IT IN ORDER TO KEEP MY GPA FROM FALLING. HE'S NICE I'LL GIVE HIM THAT BUT HIS TESTS ARE FOR THE BIRDS AND DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH THE LABS. LOL!! I HAD A 65 UNTIL OUR 2ND TEST AND THEN IT DROPPED TO A 59. DO NOT TAKE HIM GET HARRELSON AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
he does not give a study guide he write notes that are useless and he make its hard to even come away without good knowledge of the class
!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! CAUTION, CAUTION, CAUTION...he is not helpful at all, find another Gen.Micro someplace else..I promise you, if you take this class you "WILL" be sorry!! he gives you no study guide for exams on 4 chapters that he will test you on 80 questions, READ,READ,READ,READ and READ some more..the final is 7ch.s not "FUNNY"!!
pass his test by reading, reading and reading the chapters
Worst teacher ever. Tests are impossible. Dont bother taking notes bc they will be useless. I have taken him twice now and have had to drop both times. Take Harrelson if possible or take it at wadley or valley. DO NOT TAKE HAYES!
mr hayes knows his stuff. his class is very hard but enjoyable. everything is easy points except for tests. try to get a hold of harrelson's study guides and USE THEM!!! they help!
Dr. Hayes does know his stuff. Read the assignments, study from Mrs.Harrelson's study guides, do all the extra credit. Study hard and you'll do fine.
Do not take HAYES! His tests do not cover anything he teaches! They are impossible and seem like he has been using the same ones for the last 10 years! Do all extra credit if you hope to pass.
Hayes class isn't that bad. His tests are hard if you don't know the trick to it. The biggest help for me in came from the website of the company that made the book. They have quizzes online you can take for each chapter. almost all of those questions are on the test! That's half of them right there.
in this class, you HAVE to study!! the notes help but dont rely on them! you have to read the book!! make sure you pay attention during the labs!! take pictures, videos, or whatever you have to do! his Lab exams are extremely hard!! every point counts in his class!! Do the extra credit and study for the test. you can get a B even an A if you try!!
This class is extremely hard, but it is definitely good preparation for nursing school. What he teaches in class is very clear to understand but his tests are based off the book. Read it! Study! Do not fall behind on reading! Pathogen cards & quizzes are simple if you do the work! Do your case studies and extra credit articles! Great teacher!
Nice teacher, but not very helpful. His test are straight from the book. He definitely knows his stuff, but knowlege is only useful for himself.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! THIS IS A FAIR WARNING! YOU MAY AS WELL LEARN THE BOOK WORD FOR WORD! THIS CLASS WAS SO CONFUSING, AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO TAKE IT!!! HE DOESN'T TEACH YOU ANYTHING JUST MAKES YOU READ THE BOOK. THIS CLASS WAS HORRIBLE. THESE RATINGS DONT LIE, PLEASE TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY!
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT:Please do NOT take his class! He is not helpful at ALL.He gives you a USELESS handout with objectives & terms on it that don't help at all on the tests. He doesn't care about his students & almost half the questions on his tests are trick questions! His powerpoint notes are USELESS too. This is the WORSE professor I have ever had!
You really have to read the chapters and study for his lecture tests. He is very informative and a great instructor. He knows his stuff!
he is the worst teacher in microbiology. his test are all tricky questions....
This is the absolute worst teacher ever. He will NOT help you in anyway. A little advice to anyone looking to take microbiology take a teacher that actually care for their students and actually want to see their students succeed.
I struggled throughout his entire class. Test carry a lot of weight in the course. He does give enough other points that it is possible to pass even if you bomb all the test. He is a sweet guy, but his lectures are overwhelming and leave you confused. Read, use the book website for quizzes and flash cards, and know your pathogens!
Mr. Hayes was very helpful to me. I could ask him anything and he would explain it to me. He is there to help you. You have to study and learn to make good grades, that is with any class though. I would take him, just be prepared to devote yourself so you can make a good grade. He is a great teacher. Draw what he draws on the board.
Mr hayes is a great professor and really cares about what he teaches. He knows his stuff and can help you to understand any of the material. He will sir and help through labs and with notes too. If you actually care about learning and broadening your knowledge he is a good choice. Just go to class and study and you will have no problem passing.
He will not let you miss more than two class days or your lab grade is dropped a whole letter grade, All of his tests are on the book's website but the lab tests are almost impossible to make an A on. DONT miss lab or you will lose that A you worked so hard for and it will drop down to a B. His lectures are long... and he lectures after tests....
Good guy but tests are impossible. Doesn't tell you what is going to be on the test & asks a lot of trick questions. Smart guy, but expects you to know everything coming in. Take pictures of all the slides/specimens so you can print/study them for the lab final. When he says read the book, what he really means is memorize everything. Avoid!!
Mr. Hayes is a really great teacher but you have to understand how he works. The test questions are very involved. He is there to help you and if you have question he will answer it. He genuinely wants you to succeed but you have to put in the WORK and TIME. Study the notes and the book... DO THE BONUS(DO IT). Your grade will reflect your efforts.
He made the class interesting by saying funny jokes, but his lectures do not cover what is on the test . He is a super smart man. But, get ready to read your book to pass. The pathogen quizzes were easy , but the tests came staright out the book. Know your pathogens . The lab finals were a lot easier than his lecture exams.
Mr. Hayes is literally the hardest teacher I've taken at southern union. His lectures are no cow: all bull. 60+ slides of notes for a chapter and you probably need to know 60% of what is on there to make an A on a test. Lab tests are nearly impossible to pass. If you don't pray often and have a close connection to Jesus, you will fail.
Do not take Hayes if you are not a science major. He doesn't give study guides, he doesn't tell you what will be on the test and he didn't change his teaching skills when all 10 of the people in my class were making C's, D's and a few F's! He should be fired, clearly he doesn't care about you passing because he NEVER helped us.
I took Mr. Hayes for Microbiology and was probably the hardest class I have ever taken. He doesn't seem to care if his students pass for fail. We started the semester with 24 students and had almost 12 drop because they were failing his class so bad. He does give a few scaling points here and there, but his tests are literally impossible!
He's not as hard as everyone says. Show up to every class, make an effort. DO NOT MISS LAB! Make sure you do all the extra credit its basically a letter grade. I maybe studied an hour for each lecture test 2 for lab test and did all the extra credit and made a B. I failed it the first time bc I didn't do any of that! I love lab playing w/ pathogens
don't take him
He does not give study guides for test and the tests are over 4-5 chapters. Lecture test 2 is a BEAST, he has a lot of "scenario" questions on it. Better be ready to read your book. He does give bonuses so I suggest you do them. 4 points deducted each lab you miss too! Nice guy but I don't like his teaching techniques.
took for summer class and the whole class barely passed. he blamed it on us saying we need to change our study habits but everyone makes D's and F's on the tests. his test are ridiculous and super boring. doesn't even try to make it interesting at 8 A.M. :( Lab practicals are impossible DO NOT TAKE.
By far the worst teacher that I have ever had. Tests had information that didnt go along with the notes and lectures. No study guides whatsoever. Gives extra credit but by far the hardest extra credit you can do. Labs are basically impossible. Do not take him under any circumstance.
Mr. Hayes is a really nice guy, that being said, I wouldn't take his class again. He puts too much material and trick questions on his tests. But he does scale his tests and offers LOTS of extra credit and I would encourage you to do it if you are taking his class; it saved my grade. You have to work for it, you can't just show up and pass.
Avoid him if possible. Aweful notes, no guidance. Hes a very smart man, but hes a biologist not a teacher.
Mr. Hayes is really nice and really knows microbiology. However, to be successful in this course you have to read every chapter. His lectures dont always cover everything that is on the three lecture tests. Know the pathogens and do the bonus work, it saved my grade. This was the hardest class Ive taken and I made a B so its possible!
Mr. Hayes is a very smart biologist. Not a very good teacher. He can be funny but is not good at helping students understand the difficulty of biology. His powerpoint are very long and not helpful when studying. Studying for his tests is extremely hard because you never know what he is going to ask on his test. Nice man, rough teacher.
Mr. Hayes is very smart and funny, but it's understand the information from him. His notes were all over the board and hard to follow along with. He doesn't give study guides for his tests, so you really have to study everything. He gives extra credit opportunities towards the end of the semester. Be prepared to STUDY!!!
He is a good teacher but the lecture tests, lab tests, and pathogen quizzes are tough. Very tough. You have to study so much and still won't make the grade you should get.
He is a great guy but also a bad teacher. I would not suggest you take him unless your ready for a stressful semester.
Mr. Hayes is an amazing teacher who really helps guide your notes. He has in depth drawings in notes and it really helps me visualize and keeps me interested. He has a great personality and is extremely intelligent. Also it is important to do the extra credit because it can literally bring your grade up half a letter grade. I would take him again
Professor Hayes is a very nice, funny man. He is very intelligent and knows what he is talking about. He is a good lecturer, but he finishes lecture the class period before the test, not helpful. He is very vague on what is covered on the tests and labs. Do your extra credit and know your pathogens! This class is doable if you truly study, but hard
Awful!!!! I have a 4.0 gpa and I could NOT PASS 1 test in his class!! No matter how much I studied!! If there is someone else teaching the course, by all means take someone else.
Totally ruined my GPA staying in this class! I am a A/B student and would never take this class again! Hard to follow notes, 150 question tests, terrible lab experience. This is a self teach class and the test will be random to what he taught. Extra credit points are a joke no way to please him with what he requires for it. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Dont take Hayes. DONT DO IT. Im an excellent student, but there is no way to succeed in this class. No amount of preparation will work. I read the book 100 times over, memorized everything & the tests would be 100+ questions of scenarios full of jargon. Very smart, cant teach. Save your gpa, take class with a different teacher.
Ill begin by saying that youll only do as well as the work you put in. Make sure you look over the outline and key terms as you progress each chapter, and read your textbook and powerpoints. ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS DURING LECTURE AND LAB. IT HELPS. You will partner up in lab. Solid professor and good practice for your healthcare coursework.
He is extremely smart and knows a lot about the subjects that are talked about in class. However, he does not care about his students. Every test there were questions that were from outer space. This is the hardest class I have ever had. The bonus he offers is hard but worth it. The final exam is comprehensive. 7 days of studying and I made a C.
Mr. Hayes is very smart but the worst professor I have ever had. I am a 4.0 student and no matter how much I tried his tests were impossible made up scenario questions, and don't even get me started on how difficult the lab tests are! Ended up with a B because I did ever bit of the bonus work and the bonus was hard! DO NOT TAKE HIM, HE'S AWFUL!
Hayes was one of the best professors I have had at Southern Union. I took him Fall 2019 and he was great. Before I took the class, I was nervous because all of the reviews on here, but he is a great lecturer and he draws out things in class on the board with color to help you. If you read the book and pay attention to lectures, you will do good.
His tests were absolutely the hardest. I've had a 4.0 until I got to his class and started making 40s on the tests. I took his class during covid and was having a hard time going to class due to anxiety. When I explained this to him, he could care less and refused to help me out. I tried to study, but the tests were nothing like the material.
Mr. Hayes is more of a field scientist than a college professor. He often goes into tangents about random interesting things which if you love the subject can be great. BUT this was BY FAR the hardest class I have ever taken. Our class had well below 50% pass. SUPER HARD TESTS AND LAB EXAMS! If you don't love biology this isn't for you.
absolutely terrible teacher. lectures are long, boring, and he often goes on rambling about random things that has nothing to do with the course. he makes you do labs without any help or feedback. took in the middle of covid so most of my class had a few absences, so he wouldn't let us do most labs and gave us 0's. take anyone else
I hate to say do not take him because as a person he is nice but .... do not take him. His lecture style makes it hard to fully understand everything and his tests are extremely difficult even after studying a lot. I usually shoot for A's or if I end up having to a high B... but with this class I settled for a C sadly. Nice man. Difficult class!
Micro with professor hayes was a very intimidating class for me, i was on the verge of dropping the class because I had a D. But the lab notebook & extra credit saved my grade and I ended with a B. Very hard tests, I failed all of them but the home work and pathogen cards helped bring grace up. He is not the most accessible out of class.
This class is not as bad as all the reviews say. The lectures are long and you will have a lab almost every single class, so be prepared. His tests are difficult but if you take notes and actually pay attention in class, you'll be fine. The lab notebook and extra credit will bring you up a whole letter grade so def try to do good on them!!!
Incredibly long lectures. Passing the class is almost impossibly. I was in a class with brilliant kids and our tests grades never hit about a c. He makes it impossible. Please please take someone else.
Very nice and incredibly knowledgably about biology, but he's got the worst test of all time. Not only are they just difficult but we were rarely given any info about specifics to study for on lecture test. He tried to make his lectures more engaging with the occasional story (which were actually always really interesting) but they were rare.
I have taken two classes with him, one of them microbiology. He is a phenomenal person and professor. The labs made his classes super interesting. His class is not easy by any means, and the tests are hard, but if you put the effort in, show up to class and do the extra credit, you will do very well.
he makes you lecture after exams.
Nice guy and very knowledgeable, but taking notes, listening to lectures, doing homework, and studying the (7.5 hr long McGraw Hill) "study guide" are not going to help you that much for tests. The questions are often extremely specific and you never know what'll actually be on it. You need to be in class for labs or your grade will drop a LOT.
Dr. Hayes is very smart, I can't give any advice on his class, just pray and do as much work as you can. His tests are extremely hard, we had a class average of 40. Most failed his class.
He was a very nice professor but when it came to the test it was nothing like anything you studied from notes or labs. His study guide given for test are 7+ hours and do not even help with the test. When asked by students what he recommended us to study he would tell us one thing then on the following test change his recommendation.
Professor Hayes is brilliant, but his tests are notoriously challenging. Attend class, read the textbook, and utilize study aids like quizard and unstuck AI to prepare. With dedication, it's possible to succeed, but be ready for a tough ride.
Mr. Hayes is a kind man, but unhelpful teacher. Tests do not match what is in textbook or taught, wording seems purposefully tricky. I asked him his suggestion for prepping for him tests, did what he said, and it didn't help. He just reads PowerPoints. Labs tests are just as difficult. No study guide.
I took him for Bio 104, and he is such a great guy. The only issue most, if not all, students have with his class is that the tests are way too hard. My advice is to not miss a single day, your grade will plumet and do the extra credit. I have made a flashcard set for every single test, except the first, on Quizlet. Search for GrimStarch. Good luck
He is a very knowledgeable person but unless you have a very high IQ or love biology you will not get an A. you'll be lucky to get a B. His tests are extremely hard and he does not offer any advice or help. I had a 99% for all other assignments and 50 extra points but had a B- because of tests. Class average was never above 60.
Please do not let the other reviews on Mr. Hayes intimidate you. He is a hard professor, but does not just fail you. He provides roughly 250 points of bonus for just showing up to class and completing one bonus assignment. Show up to class, study hard, and use quizlets made by previous students. Search SUSCC Hayes BIO220 in quizlet, you got this!!
