Not a good lecturer, and my worst class in college. The class is taught at a 9th grade level, yet one of the essays expected expert knowledge of the workings of Congrssional business and reports.
Wow, he gives out way too much to read for homework. excited about what he does tho.
This is the worst class i has ever been in. high school and college combined. though the ta was horrible as well, joe was not much better. his assignments were very vague and his reading assignments were far too excessive to expect of a college student.
Horrible professor. expects 400 level coursework in a 100 level course. term papers are rediculous and ask too much. the information is not hard, but he has the t.a's grade like nazis
I concur with the previous statements towards Joe Hinchliffe. Joe Blows
He is also an advisor now. He is a very nice guy, but he is somewhat of a dim bulb. Make sure you know what all of the college requirements are and do not count on him to catch any errors; take all his "advice" with a grain of salt.
If I had one day to live, I would go to this class because it would seem like I had lived a whole life by the time his boring, vague lecture was over. good intentions, horrible teacher.
As a prof. he is intense in class and gives vauge essay topics. As an advisor he has been no help at all, even rude at times.
Terrible advisor. When I told him my plans to go to law school, he tried to talk me out of it, probably because he hated being a lawyer and assumes the worst of everyone. Very nice guy though, just don't listen to him.
If you like Poli Sci, you'll do fine in his class....if you don't - find another class.
Horrible. Has the condescending attitude of my worst teachers from Jr. High, is completely boring (I'd only come up from my crossword when he yelled), and seems to design his tests with the intent of 'tricking' students. Avoid.
No matter what you do, do not, under any circumstances, let this man know or think you are a Republican. He's very pleased with himself, moreso than anybody in the class is with him. He chooses the most oppressively dull textbooks I have ever seen.
I like him. Hes my advisor too, and I think he's really helpful and so is my T.A. He's good about extending due dates. He's a nice guy, really into poli sci...
He is one of the most boring speakers I've ever seen. I once showed him what I was planning on writing my term paper on. He told me not to write about that topic and to write about something else. To make a long story short, I got a D on the paper & was told that the topic was too vague by the TAs!
Very controversial
JOE IS ABSENT MINDED. HE WILL JUST GO OFF ON RANDOM THOUGHTS EVEN THOUGH HE BELIEVES HIS LECTURES ARE "RIBBITING" (YES HE REFERED TO THEM AS THAT). HE TAKES HIS CLASS TOO SERIOUSLY AND ALTHOUGH I AM A POLI SCI MAJOR AND ENJOY POLITICS HE MAKES HIS CLASS MORE THAN IT SHOULD BE.

BAD NEWS!!! Lectures were incredibly boring and he's not that fair with grading. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASSES!
terrible class
If you are going to take PS 101 make sure NOT to get joe...the class was horrible...and boring...and trust me he has no compassion!
HOrrible!!!
he was so bad and really didnt care about anyone but him and his lunches at the Y. I hated him and his class and made me never want to be a politician.
Do not take his class unless you want to die...
He wasn't that bad of a professor- note to all of you out there rating a 100-level poli sci class professor low because class is boring- all 100-level poli sci classes ARE boring!! It has little to do with the prof. I had him for a 300-level and he wasnt too bad....
His classes are extremely boring and uneventful. He is more than willing to help you if you go in, but that doesn't make expectations any more clear. Do NOT take this class unless you want to spend hours on papers only to end up with a grade that you could get coasting through any other class.
This guy is a complete tool. I see him often and every time have to restrain the urge to punch him in the face. Though I will say his loose interpretation of conventional morality makes him a good poli-sci prof. Boring class + heavy workload + humorless butterbean in a suit = instant cerebral death.
I agree with everyone else, he is really bad. He is a huge tool, and even though all ps 100 levels are boring, this one just sucks. Dont take it if he is the professor.
more or less worthless
He is a hard ass. He thinks that he knows everything and his grading is unfair. If you turn in a well written paper, expect to get a D or less. I hate him. Don't take the class.

I spent hours studying and studying for the first midterm.. i thought i had aced it and i ended up doing terrible!! He is the WORST teacher i have ever had and i want to kill myself everytime i walk into his classroom..he is a tool and adds liberal propaganda into his lectures everyday
i thinkn heneed to take chill
A.K.A. "The magician" because he takes a simplistic course and warps it into a sinister class that makes me want to give up on life.
Although he claims that he is always available and he is, the class is ridiculously impossible to get an A or B in. It seems everyone is being screwed on his essays and midterms. Don't take Political Science 101 because I used to like this subject, but now hate it. Sorry Hinchliffe...
Joseph Hinchliffe sucks at life. He thinks he's hilarious, but his stories are awful. His workload is outrageous and I bust my butt doing his assignments, and have to sacrifice time on other classes and still do horrific. I hate this man.
This class is hard for no reason, simply put. I have friends who take PS 101 with other professors and pass with an A doing nothing extra ordinary. I will not sleep tonight (Tuesday) because I have to start studying for a mid-term I have for this class on Friday! It sucks. Try Hoffman.
The difficulty of the class is extremly high. I always thought 100 level courses were of reasonable difficuly. He proved me wrong. Do not under any circumstances enroll in this class unless you are opposed to a 4.0 GPA, because I guarantee you will not get it. He seemes to be a reasonable teacher, sort of, but this should be a 2-300 level course.
Dont take any of his classes, total Pric!
What in the heck is the deal with the class. We take online quizzes that count for 10% of our grade but we have to read one hundred pages of material to take it and he asks the most detailed questions. This is introductory and he doesn't test over stuff he lectures on in class. Stay away it at all possible.
He would've got 0's all across the board had they been offered.
worst class ever. DO NOT TAKE PS101 WITH PROF. HINCHLIFFE. YOU WILL REGRET IT!
This class is hard because the essays/ papers are graded by different TAs. They all grade differently, so there is no way of knowing what they want. My friend had her bro. who is in law school here help with her papers- and she still got C's!! He is not of much help even if you go in to ask for it, and it is hard for a 100 level
The class is rediculous. Understandable that there is a lot of information to cover in a short amount of time, but it is crazy the way that Joe teaches. Very unreachable and the T.A.'s are NO help.
Joe Hinchliffe sucks. I'm a straight A students and had to work my ass off to get a B. Stay away from this man. He is Satan.
Never take that class.
Worst. Professor. Ever.
Makes this class harder than it needs to be. Not very helpful when I went in to office hours. Definitely should not have gotten the grade I did for how hard I studied. I put a lot of time and effort into this class and still couldn't pull an A. Sometimes he was just totally unfair.
He's a nice person, but there is a lot of work for his class. The examples he's shown us of A papers and D papers look almost the same to me. I've always gotten straight A's and I can't figure out what he wants. If you ask for help, he'll talk to you, but you still never really know what he wants. He says his class is the most important 1 here.
Joseph Hinchliffe smacks with such blatant arrogance that he believes that, should someone (god forbid) get an A in his class, that it is too easy. Maybe that is why answers on tests deviate by the most minute measure, and his lectures jump from topic to unrelated topic. The workload is akin to law school, and even doing it won't assure you an A.
The professor is helpful--he expects more out of the students than just a memorization of the topics. The class is not difficult if effort is put into it~ just take it as it is. I had it my freshmen year and it basically served as a wake up call that college is not going to be a repeat of highschool. Go to office hours, TA's are useless.
I hardly need to add to what other people have said... but its all true. This class is nuts. He lectures you like a high school student... and then tests you like a grad student. Advice: Make sure that you understand the ridiculous amount of online reading before the exams...or, even better, take someone else's PS 101 class.
This class was much harder than the major specific PS 101 class that my friend took. Joe expects a lot out of the students and doesn't feel that anyone should get an A.
Took this freshman year. The man is hard to understand, tests are bogus. If you plan on slacking off this really is not the course for you.
You guys are all right. This class is unneccesarily difficult. How could any 100 level course be so hard? His class was a real pain in my neck. And when writing papers he has so many expectations and demands. Its his way or the highway. I STRONGY suggest taking someone else's PS 101 course.
Possibly the worst teacher ever. Useless in lectures. Useless in office hours. He's not a professor, just a staff member (undergrad adviser), and now I know why. The worst professor is better than him. Plus, he is not a great adviser either (but that is a different topic)! Take someone else. Anybody else is better.
Don't take this class! If this is not a required course, don't take it. You have to give this class 100% of your time if you want an A or B. Not worth it. Take another gen-ed or Prof.
On the first day of class he shook everyone's hand except mine. It made me feel uneasy about him and the class
I actually liked him a lot. He was really friendly and helpful if you wanted the help. If you work semi-hard this class is a breeze.
Ill make this short. Horrible. The man is incapable of listening to anybody but himself. Completely narrow minded and useless for help. What's really disturbing is the fact that a professor with only 3 positive reviews of nearly 60 could not only avoid termination, but rise to become the director of undergrad polysci studies.
He likes to give you way more work than necessary, like having to prepare for 16 essays for the final exam. This class takes a lot of work, but can be interesting when you are reading by yourself...not in class though. Go to the TA's..they're the best source of help and the only way to understand what is going on.
The most compelling questions this man is capable of raising is how he was hired and why hasn't he been fired.
This guy is my adviser and after 3 tries, including a shouting match with the professor, he still doesn't know my name! I have zero idea what the hell he is talking about. He seems to be very biased. Only he would be pretentious enough to record himself explaining how to read a 18th century document and proceed to play it in front of the class.
P.S. the syllabus is 18 pages long!!! AND HE COPY-RIGHTED IT!!!
Wow this class is horrible. I am not exaggerating but like seriously you might want to try another professor because this guy makes this class almost impossible. It is supposed to be a P.S. class but it seems like a 200 course. I just freaking took U.S. Gov (H) last year and i did very well in it. This guy makes me depressed.
I took this class as a Gen-Ed. Bad mistake. As an engineering student i have enough on my plate than to have to read 2 hours each night for this class not to mention that his classes don't prepare you at all. If you like learning based on reading, you might this class. Other than that, good luck.
Hincliffe has a twin..and his name is Satan.
It is true that he teaches this class as if it were a 200 level, but just do what is asked and you'll do well. He gives you three tries on quizzes and gives about ten extra credit chances, so getting an A is not hard. He's friendly and approachable and gives you every opportunity to succeed.
he is a nice professor and offers a lot of extra credit. it is a lot of work and it is important to keep up but worthwhile. Focus on the online readings he gives, they are key to the midterm
I was an idiot for taking this stupid class. I could have chosen so many better PS classes to take that would have been easier and more worthwhile. My suggestions: do the online readings.
i would advise taking another political science class. i learned a lot, but it takes up too much time.
I'm not sure why he gets such a bad rap. He's accessible and he challenges his students but wants them to succeed. It's true that his lectures are sometimes boring and there is a ridiculous amount of reading with which we did nothing, but overall a good introduction to American politics. For the most part, it's a pretty easy class.
At the beginning of the semester I wanted to drop this class. But as long as you do the textbook reading, study for the possible essay questions, and go to lecture, you can get a decent grade. I got an A-, which is proof that he does give As.
He's really not as bad as everyone says he is, but I still wouldn't recommend the class. The readings are heavy, boring, difficult, and unfortunately essential. If you study hard, are dedicated, and know your stuff you'll probably end up with a B+ or an A-. There are other PS 101 classes that are easier and more enjoyable though...
Dr Hinchcliffe has a great passion for Political Science. He expects too much on written essays though. If you put in a ton of work into the class you shall do ok.
Very kind man who is extremely intelligent and helpful if you see him outside of class. Unfortunately, lectures are incredibly dry and the tests are Very difficult- half M.C. half essay... essays usually are fine( broad topics) but the multiple choice is very tricky you need to read the book with a comb to get all of those correct.
Does Not teach well; does not use material on tests talked about in lecture
Unit 1 is tough but it gets easier, I promise! He is VERY passionate about politics and it shows in his lectures, very energetic and wants his students to love politics. Going to lecture is very important and so is doing the reading. Tough but manageable and interesting.
A difficult teacher and not one recommended for froshoman to take, unless you want an difficult 101 class change sections. That being said, he is very knowledgeable of the material and can usually be pursuaded into giving aid. He makes the class a lot harder than other sections, but in the end the extra practice prepares you for harder classes.
essay questions very wordy; uses questions at 200 level. Does not necessarily use information discussed in class on tests.
As an advisor, simply not helpful at all. Outwardly discourages students from pursuing competitive careers and is incapable of accommodating students needs if it requires he step outside his contrived thought process. If you plan on going into law or a Ph.D. program another advisor will be a thousand times more accommodating, helpful and insightful
Professor Hinchliffe expects a lot out of his students. His lectures can be confusing, and he uses material on the exam that was not covered in class. However, he challenges his students, and if you do not mind having to work hard, then his class should benefit you in some way.
Hinchliffe is a cool guy as a friend, just like to chill... but as a professor, he sucks. You pretty much have to do all the studying by yourslef, so BUY and READ the book.
NO, DON'T,RUNAWAY! I am praying on my hands and knees for a 70.00 in this class, all of the other students pretty much feel this same way. I have never in my life never understood a word the teacher was saying, and I went in for help many times. THIS WILL KILL YOUR GPA. Please listen, I wish I had. He never said anything constructive and definite.
This class turned me away from Political Science. It is by far the most demanding class and it will kill your GPA. He is a nice guy, but not too helpful. If you don't have at least 2hrs a night to spend on this class THEN GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN! Good luck everyone, pray for that 70%.
If you want to keep your GPA high, avoid this professor's classes. you will be screwed for sure
Absolutely horrid. My first polysci class, 101 in fact, and the course work equals about a 300-level class. Lucky to be even getting a C, seriously. Essays along with 80-100 pages of reading back to back. Multiple choice tests with nothing covered during class. STAY AWAY from this class, unless it's mandatory...
He really isnt as bad as everyone says. If you do the readings (there are a lot) you will have no problems on tests. For papers just make you sure you follow instructions. You should be fine.
I understood this professor was challenging. I was eager for the opportunity to prove myself and learn a lot. Looking back, I regret it. The class was a headache and uninteresting. Yes, there are challenging courses that can be quite gratifying, this is not one of them. Unrealistic reading assignments, annoyingly over-animated powerpoints.
Absolutely horrible class, demanding 3 hours A DAY for this class, assigning articles with 8 point font and with 20 pages, and expecting it to be done by the next day for another article in preparation for his lectures and the test. I came hoping to do well in PoliSci as I love it, but this professor and class turned me away from it.
I was very interested in politics before this arrogant man ruined it. Want to ruin your gpa? Take his class. I am now changing my major thanks to this pathetic man. Oh, and as an advisor he is useless.
Professor Hinchliffe is a great professor with high exoextations! Although this class is difficult, I've gained allot from the experience. This class is here to get rid of all the Poli Sci major students who don't really have a passion for Political Science. Just do the readings+practice time management. I'm continuing my with my major!
Just do the work and study and you'll get an A. Everyone is exaggerating. However, you do have to put a little more effort than you would expect to get an A.
Ok for all the PS101 posters and rookie PS majors: PS is a major that has LOTS of reading as a Junior I have 600 pages a week typically. (I don't read all of it) So the level of reading in PS101 is typical. PS-322 was an amazing class, not hard, although I know of some people who struggled CAUSE THEY DONT READ ESSAY PROMPTS lol. Hinchlife is awsome
How did this man become the director of undergrad polisci studies? Inconsiderate, patronizing, so pretentious, and a lazy advisor. The other two advisors are way more interested and personable. They should stage a coup.
Not at all surprised by the other comments- this guys likes to smile while actually being rude to students. Not a pleasant experience working with him, not just for his attitude but also his ability to effectively do his job as counselor to the students who pay his wage.
I don't know why everyone here hates Hinchliffe so much. I think he's a super nice and helpful guy. I enjoyed 321, and I think he's a great advisor.
Worst instructor ever! He is rude, selfish and arrogant!
So I'm a freshman who took his PS 101 class. READ EVERYTHING HE GIVES AND SHOW UP TO LECTURE. That is what I learned this past semester. This class is serious, but incredibly interesting. I say read because his slides give brief overview over what you had to read. Political Science is no joke and I think that's what he's trying to show.
The class content itself is very interesting which is why I chose to take the class. If you're looking for a blow-off class, this is not for you. Long 120 minute lectures plus reading assignments that can be up to 120 pages + is not my idea of a blow-off. It isn't impossible to pass though as long as you go to class and do the readings.
I took his 101 class my freshman year and had him as an advisor. He told me to change my career path my first semester of freshman year. I did not listen to him and I changed advisors. I now have an internship at a law firm where the partners have agreed to hire me in three years once I pass the BAR. Point is DO NOT LET THIS MAN KILL YOUR DREAMS.
Hinchliffe said that he has not taught this class in awhile so I'm assuming it can only get better. The class lectures can be long, the readings are pretty interesting. Overall, you should do fine as long as you're somewhat interested in Public Policy.
Lectures were incredibly boring and you have to work to get a good grade in this class. He uses powerpoints for every lecture and it was difficult to stay interested.
PS 220 wasn't an entertaining or fun class. He droned on and on and just laughed at his own jokes. However, he's also an adviser who tries to get everyone to not go into law. I don't listen to him when he tells me to give up on law school, but I wish he would help students rather than making them feel dumb and incapable of succeeding.
Such a boring teacher. Asks questions that have no answer and if they do, you have to be a mind reader. Soooo much homework for a 1-credit class. Wouldnt recommend this class to my worst enemy. He is an eccentric teacher but will talk on and on about vague and abstract ideas which dont help you at all for the papers he assigns.
I'd like to keep it short.. As much as i like his personality and kindness, he is the worst instructor i've ever had in my entire life.
Very practical- if you need an extension because you were lazy, he will grant that. If you need extra help, he is willing to help. However, his grader (at least for PS 321 Fall '16) was not as lenient. Hinchliffe's personality as a professor puts you at ease and then you receive your first homework grade. Don't play yourself- put in enough work!
Requires lots of reading: different articles/books every week. Wrote about 4 short essays and one term paper. No quizzes and only one test (final). He is a nice guy who is open to suggestions and helping you if you ask. Overall he is not a tough grader and this class is not hard to pass if you do put in some work.
He's an animated professor, but comes off as condescending imo. He seems to really care and encourages students to visit him during office hours. Tons of readings (100+ pages per week), lectures are disorganized (no powerpoints; he goes on tangents), grading is fair (2 midterms + final w/ cheat sheets, paper, attendance). Material is really dry
Odd mix, but overall a good one. Because there is no disc. sect for PS 318, many of the questions on reading happen in lecture, and can get awkwardly silent when no one can answer them. Tests essay based, but he gives you the selections ahead of time to prepare. Genuinely caring, promotes a good understanding of topics, but weird lecture structure
The lectures are extremely heavy and he refuses to share his ppt. Brutal towards grading.
The nicest professor that I have ever had. However, his tangents and overuse of unnecessary words made the class drag on. When this course switched to online only (COVID-19), he was very accommodating. He is very knowledgeable about what he is teaching, but teaches as if he expects his students to be at his level of expertise, for better or worse.
Lacks empathy.
Incredibly condescending and demeaning.
If you're going through these reviews and thinking that you'll be able to handle his class, good luck Charlie. I had that confidence too. There's supposed to be 8 modules and we had 5. He expected us to complete 2 essays and a presentation without putting up the remaining modules, so we contacted someone above him. Instead, final's 45% of our grade
If you expect a hard, but straightforward class this is not it. Joseph leaves all of the grading to his ta and is too lazy to make sure his ta even grades it. His ta decided not to grade the midterm or second paper, just submitted them as zeros expecting me not to pay attention, but hey neither did joe.
if you have tripophobia do NOT take this class!
I had him as an advisor, and not a professor, but I imagine his advisement carries over to his teaching. I had a terrible experience working with him. He would force me into classes I did not want to take, he was very rude would mock me for my questions, and would straight up tell me false information about classes. Talk to someone else.
Tough class, but worth it if you engage with the content. Lectures can drag, but the professor is knowledgeable. Consider using Unstuckstudy alongside the free textbook to prepare - it helped me stay on top of things.
I've never had this professor, but he was rude to me on an email, and I did not appreciate it.
I sincerely did not enjoy this course. grading procedures are very unclear. No rubrics he archrive the class before all grades were posted. very rude and condescending in class. I truly wish I didn't have to take another course by him again. His lecture sides are very confusing and not formatted well at all. and he assigns five 50 page readings/wk
