Good guy
such a great teacher. Very collected and organized and always willing to help students. Very knowledgeable and informative. Great professor.
Great professor! He is very helpful and his class is fun. He even threw an end of the semester pizza party for his students. He also keeps it interesting by a showing a movie about history every now and again. He is an awesome professor and if I had to take another History course, I would choose him.
HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR. I love Holbrook. The whole class is on Blackboard, quizzes every week. Three Essays one is a rewrite. Three Discussions based on three movies. Overall he is one of the best professors I've had. This is the one class I looked forward to going to.
HE IS GREAT
He is the best. Want an A, take him, he is funny, and class time is just discussion, Everything is online, and just 2 essays, which he grades easily.
Professor Holbrook is amazing! This isn't my first time taking REL 2011 and other teachers made my life miserable! He really cares about his students and gives plenty of opportunities to get your grade up. Uses textbook for online quizzes. Movies require discussion. Lots of extra credit! So easy going, definitely recommend!
Professor Holbrook is the epitome of what a professor should be like. He really encourages his students to speak their mind and he never shuts anyone down for their opinion. There were around 13 online quizzes which correlated with the text book. He gives you multiple chances on getting good grades. YOU MUST TAKE THIS COURSE! I learned a lot.
He is a good teacher, but the class can be boring at times. He is very helpful though and gives extra credit. The quizzes can sometimes be hard, because the questions are sometimes vague. Also for the papers we had to write for the class he focuses alot on grammar but he grades based on the suggestions from turnitin which aren't always errors.
Professor Holbrook is one of the best professors I have had at FIU. He is funny, knowledgeable, caring, and his classes are awesome! I have never rated a prof before, I am doing it for Holbrook because he is just amazing!
Dr. Holbrook is an amazing professor and he truly cares about his students. He made a not so interesting subject a fun learning experience. He's a tough grader on papers so be prepared to write good papers. He's extremely fair and will work with you to make sure you understand the material. 10 chapter quizzes, 2 papers, 3 online discussions.
BEST RELIGION PROFESSOR EVER! Two papers, not long. Quizzes every week on the material from class lectures, not hard either and they're online. The professor is very caring and sweet. I would take every class with him if I could. TAKE HIMMMMM!!!
Professor Holbrook is a great teacher and person. Easy course with 1 group project, 2 papers and weekly quizzes. Does extra credit and accepted late work. He is a very respectable man who cares about every single student. PICK HIM.
Overall class was okay. Gives extra points to help your grade. Has favorites. Runs off topic ALL the time. Prepare to study for quizzes and tests because he is no help. Book is boring and hard to read. Nice guy but not the best at teaching. Grades essays by copying& pasting essays to Word to find grammar errors. Easier if you take class w/ friends
The best Latin American Civilization class in the world ! Time flew too fast and I got an A in six weeks. Blackboard is an essential tool for this professor. Movies are weird, but very interesting. There was only one paper (final paper) but if you follow the instructions, you won't have problems with it. Very willing to help you in everything !
If you're looking for the best professor on campus, he is it! Amazing professor! Wish he taught all other subjects too. He loves what he teaches and it makes it all the more interesting. Fun professor, very flexible, don't hesitate to take him! Love love love him!
Oh my God ! This class made me proud of my country since it was one of the focus of Latin american civilization. Excellent professor in all the senses, I feel very lucky to take this class with professor Holbrook. I heard terrible comments about other teachers who teach this class, but of course this teacher is the exception. A+ for him !
I took his class as a UCC requirement and ended up loving it. I actually looked forward to his class. If you go to class, hear the lectures, and keep up with the essays, you'll be fine! Great class. Get involved in discussion for extra credit!
One of the best professors I had in terms of easiness and helpfulness. There are weekly quizzes, you watch good movies and review them (300 words), and then write a paper at the end of the semester which you can revise. He truly goes out of his way to help you and he provides extra credit opportunities. Group project was easy, too.
Professor Holbrook was amazing. I got an A- because of attendance. I must admit he is so linient that i didn't feel like it'd make a dent in my grade but it did. Besides that he is an amazing professor and I'm planning on taking him again for religion for my ucc!! Take him and won't regret it. GRAMMAR ON YOUR ESSAYS IS A MUST.
Prof. Holbrook was always willing to help his students, and very knowledgeable. Weekly quizzes, midterm and final, easy group presentation, and one final paper. TAKE THIS CLASS WITH PROFESSOR HOLBROOK. You won't regret it.
Holbrook is a very nice person. You HAVE to go to class though there's no way around that. Participation is also a big thing. When you speak up he gives you points. Not participating almost got me down from an A to a B but i managed to get an A- The workload is average. Weekly quizzes, two papers, midterm, and final. You NEED the book.
He is an amazing professor! He cares about his students and provides a lot of opportunities to get your grade up. GO TO CLASS AND PARTICIPATE! He does give weekly quizzes that are a majority of your grade but only two test: Midterm and Final. YOU NEED THE BOOK. I would definitely recommend to take his class!
Weekly quizzes, 2 papers: he's a super tough grader on stupid grammar mistakes & grades down for things he thinks don't SOUND good, even if they are grammatically correct. Midterm & final are online, NEED the book for. Participation is a must, kinda plays faves. I checked Blackboard after grades were posted & he didn't even grade my extra credit :
Professor Holbrook is one of the best professors I have ever had. I took him for this class last semester, and I am currently enrolled in one of his class. He makes sure that his students understand the concepts, gives weekly quizzes online that are simple, one or two papers to write, and a few discussions. I highly recommend him.
Absolutely amazing professor. He takes an interest in students and he's so lenient and helpful! Makes corny but funny jokes. Weekly quizzes, movie reviews, & one easy group project. Had him for 2 semesters and it was the best decision ever! The whole class loves him. Do not skip class - attendance and class discussions make a difference in the end!
Three papers, basically two because the second is just a revision of the first. FOCUSES ON SPELLING AND GRAMMAR. Make sure you speak in class and do the weekly quizzes (one on every chapter so I think 15) ! Midterm and Final are pretty easy. 1 Group project - try and be interactive with the class. 5 discussion assignments. HE WILL HELP YOU OUT!
He really wants to see his students pass. Weekly quizzes taken straight from the textbook. Two papers an a group project. Definitely go to class for those participation points.
Really easy class. Weekly quizzes based off readings, 2 papers (the first would be broken down into a draft and then the final paper) and one final group project. Most of the time he's really nice and seems to care for his students, however he can also be very moody so watch out for when he seems off.
AMAZING PROFESSOR! Very caring and understanding. Would take again if i could.
The class is easy, but I didn't like it. His lectures were just him reading straight from the powerpoint, something which you could have done. It felt like a waste of my time when the class could easily be an online class because all the assignments can be submitted through blackboard. There is a group project but it's very easy.
He was really easy. Quizzes due every Friday but if you use the book then you are fine. He gives credit for going to class and give a lot of extra credit opportunities. Only gives a midterm and final which is based on the weekly quizzes. Only one group presentation and 4 movie discussion posts. If you do the work, you will pass
THE BEST PROF EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Professor Holbrook is a really caring professor and is so nice to everyone in the class. If you forget to turn in assignments, he will give you the opportunity to turn it in. One weekly quiz, two essays, and 5 movie discussions, and one group chapter presentation. If you do the work it's an easy A. Take him !!!
Easy A ! Just make sure to do all writing assignments and participate. Gives several extra credit opportunities which boosts your grade.
Overall I would have say it was a pretty good class .. Note pay attention to your grade for his class because you want to bring it to his attention as soon as possible . There are weekly quizzes for his class and two important essays during the course. Most the reading are require before class.
A really good professor who makes the lecture really fun and exciting. The homework is good and the activities are very enjoyable. I'm really glad that I took this class with him.
He is a GREAT teacher, I would undoubtedly and gladly have him as a teacher again. You need to read and understand the book to pass, He is inspirational, and is super OPEN MINDED which I love. He respects all ideas. He always has a funny or interesting story that goes with the lesson.
I've taken Prof. Holbrook for two classes so far, and all I have to say is that he's your best choice when choosing an interesting humanities class. Weekly quizzes straight from the book, two papers and a revision, participation, final and midterm, movie discussions and a presentation. EASY A if you're on top of your work and go to class. TAKE HIM!!
Summer A course. Attendance and participation matters. Group project. 1 essay and revision (1000-1200 words). 15 online quizzes (drops lowest 3). Cumulative final (online). If you're shy it's ok he gives the option of commenting on google doc which he sets up for every class. He allows group presentation to be a video/audio. Love the Kahoot game!!
Although professor Holbrook is a moody guy who rambles about his personal life a lot- this class was fun, interesting, and easy. He is an extremely tough grader on punctuation. The book is needed but is not essential to pass. weekly quizzes are tedious but helps your grade. he's big on group work so hope your group is helpful and attentive!
Easy A, Weekly quizzes and discussion post ( Summer ) Form a group quizzes and exam are all online. Drops lowest grades in all categories. Don't need to attend every class to grasp material , online Powerpoints or book will suffice.
Prof Holbrook is really great! He will work with you whatever you need to make sure you pass. He does check grammar and punctuation so make sure to check that! He makes jokes so the class isn't boring. If I could I would definitely take him again!!!!!
Holbrook is a nice guy and cracks a lot of jokes. The best part of his course was the films we would watch on different religions. We also did a group project which I feared would be a disaster but it actually forced everyone to leave their comfort zone and make new friends. Participation counts and your attendance is taken so try to go to class!!
One of the best professors I've had in my college experience. He is considerate and compassionate towards students and grading. The book is a must (get ready to read) but the work is straight forward. The class is a bit challenging but nothing you can't handle. Do the work on time & you'll pass. Also, there are many opportunities for xtra credit.
Easy to pass. Don't really need to go, but should because of participation. Overall awesome guy!
Really nice professor who's always willing to help. The class consists of 2 essays (+1 revision), 7 film discussions, weekly quizzes, 1 group project, 1 group presentation, midterm, and final exam. Do the work (it's not hard at all), participate in class (there's a virtual participation sheet you can use if you're shy) and you'll get an A!
It's impossible to dislike him. Many tedious but easy assignments, except for the weekly chapter quizzes unless you actually READ. He has notes in pp slides online so you can study off that(I never bought the book). Reopens things if you miss deadlines, REAL generous with grading & XC. I ended with an 89 cuz I was lazy but I truly enjoyed his class
Prof Holbrook was great. He really seems to care about his class and his students. He's not a tough grader as long as you know what you are talking/writing about. Just beware of grammar. Easy to pass if you just do the work
Prof. Holbrook is the best, I would 100% take him again. Since this is a religion class I had a few problems with projects and he was extremely accommodating and respectful to everyone's beliefs. He will entertain you guys, but as fun of a guy that he is you still need to read the chapter every week and get your work done I truly enjoyed this class
Laziness is the only reason you don't get an A in this class. All assignments are understandable. Honestly you don't need to rack your brain that much, but you will learn too. He helps you out if you need it, so ask! Attendance does count. Two very easy group projects. Book (used or new) will be used. Mid-term, final online. 3 papers (easy)
Great professor , super nice and wouldn't mind taking him again. Gives extra credit, and if you actually go to class and read the power points you'll pass. Attendance counts, but you DONT need the book.
Good professor, his criteria for the class is clear on the syllabus. He wasn't a tough grader but he was big on proper grammar. There were a lot of little assignments that added up a to big portion of the grade. He encourages class participation for extra credit. If you do all the assignments you can pass the class with an A.
Great professor and person overall! He is not a hard grader. If you do all the assignments he gives out and come to class every day (he gives points for attendance), you can easily pass with an A!
Attendance is a grade so do not skip, do all your assignments on time, and try not to miss anything. He is very sweet and caring and definitely knows his stuff. Grammer in your essays counts so make sure you triple check it.
class is easy if you do the work but you need a 95% for an A which is pretty hard to get if you dont do his extra credit but the class is easy to pass. writing assignments are fair and the group project is easy. overall hes a good professor, he cares for his students and i would take him again
When I took him 2 semesters ago it wasn't enjoyable. He only played YouTube videos. I'm dead serious. The class was about American history but he always referenced Cuba (he has a special degree in Cuba history). I learned nothing. We had weekly quizzes and movie reviews, also two 6 page papers. It was a lot of work for little to no learning.
Professor Holbrook is awesome! I took both of my history credits from him because I enjoyed his class so much. His weekly quizzes are very simple. He's very understanding and helpful. He has a good sense of humor and is always cracking jokes. I definitely recommend taking him! He's the best!
Quizzes every week, a midterm, a cumulative final, and two short essays (the first of which you can rewrite). You also have to write film discussions and I don't get the point of those. Class requires a bit of work but it's not difficult. Prof answers emails quickly and is open to setting up a meeting with you to discuss your grades. He's very nice
Honestly Dr. Holbrook might be one of the most knowledgeable, passionate, and influential professors I have ever had. He's an FIU gem. The LACS program at FIU is very lucky to have faculty like him. I can't wait to have courses with him when I complete my masters.
He was an excellent speaker and a very good person. Very professional as an academic leader.
Holbrook is an amazing professor. I really have enjoyed his class and I'm going to be pursuing a masters because of how well he taught in LAS. His class is amazing and interesting, whether or not you're into the subject matter.
Dr. Holbrook is an amazing professor. I enjoyed his class and recommend him over other professors teaching the same class. You'll learn more, by working more efficiently. IT's a masters course, so you'll be reading but it's not excessive. One post a week, and 1 paper makes up the whole course. A must take professor at FIU
Easily one of the best professors I have ever had. An amazing introduction to FIU. Thank you again professor.
Great class. Professor works very hard to keep the class engaged. Responds promtly to all questions. Makes the subjes easy to understand. One lecture, one discussion and one quiz per week. Midterm and final based on quizes. I hope I can take another class with him, as he is very knowledgeable.
He's a great professor! He is very knowledgable, focused during lectures, and helpful outside of class. Lots of extra credit opportunities! Highly recommend!
Great teacher. All work open from the beginning, so you can work ahead if you want. Discussions, weekly quizzes and a paper. Very easy class
Professor Holbrook Is wonderful he give a quiz every week base on readings from the textbook very easy. Discussion every week and one paper and a chance to revise for a better grade. He is quick to answer E-mails . He is helpful and a kind man. He is very knowledgeable and will answer questions. I definitely recommend him. love him
Prof Holbrook is truly one of the best professors Ive had at FIU. He is understanding of difficult situations in students lives and really wants everyone to learn and succeed in his class. He is incredibly knowledgeable about Latin America and the Caribbean and the readings he provides for the class discussions are always interesting. Take him!
Dr. Holbrook is an amazing professor, I really enjoyed the way he led this course and found the readings interesting. He's pretty chill for an older professor and really wants you to pass. Take hime
Great choice for a level 3000 class. He is easy, replies back to emails, and overall great person. Weekly Discussion, 1-2 Essay, and Weekly Quizzes. BUT IT IS NOT HARD. The quizzes are super easy if you read the book, if not they're sorta hard.
Great course to take as an elective for Liberal Arts or for those beginning their grad track in Social Sciences. Course is based on a reading response each week, 3 presentations, and a literature review. Course teaches grad students HOW to read to be successful in their grad program. Gives great feedback. Understanding when "life" gets in the way.
I highly recommend courses with Professor Holbrook, his courses are incredibly interesting and engaging. He teaches from an array of books that expand one's knowledge on the subject he is teaching. More importantly, he is a flexible and understanding professor which is extremely rare and valuable and allowed me to learn with ease!
Good professor easy/fair grader only downside is that he gives A LOT of work and something is due every 3 days instead of weekly but most of it is easy. Easily the most discussions i have had in a course before though, very work heavy for a 1200 level class.
He is super good and interesting professor. He is very down to earth and as long as you communicate with him and get the work to him he will grade you fairly.
There's an easy 10-question quiz every week, as well as a discussion post on a movie he showed in class or whatever we're learning. There are 3 essays too. He wants his students to succeed and often gave extra credit for showing up. I had a question about an essay and he met with me in person to explain it as clearly as possible. Amazing professor!
Professor Holbrook is a caring man who is easy and understanding with his students. He is what a professor should be. The course was easy, there are usually three assignments due a week which is a bit much but it is all simple and predictable. He is a generous grader. I would recommend taking his course.
Had some issues with purchasing textbooks too early just for him to publish the contents after.
Professor Holbrook was amazing. He cares a lot about students and is very helpful with the essays. Highly recommended
Lacked basic understanding over his own grading instructions, and had poor grading skills. He messed up on one of his assignments and refused to admit his wrongdoing and gave a poor grade.
This man is one of the sweetest, most generous professors I've ever had. He's lenient with deadlines, re-opens assignments if you missed one and need it to boost your grade, and he just generally meets you where you are. If you take him, I recommend that you paying attention to him during lectures bc the class goes better when he sees that ppl care
I took this class as an "elective", I loved it, the professor was nice and it was pretty easy as long as you put in the effort.
Dr. Holbrook is the best professor ever! He is very kind, flexible, and readily available to answer any questions. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a LACS elective.
Joseph Holbrook is an excellent professor for this required class. He is caring, and nice, and provides an easy workload with ample opportunities for discussion posts. Essays are part of the class, not the professor, and he grades fairly. He is also really funny and realistic. I recommend enrolling in any of his classes. (The textbook is free.)
Good professor all around. He provides the online pdf textbook in the first module so no need to worry. Plus he posts both PowerPoints and his own YouTube videos that go over the PowerPoint so you could learn the way that works best for you. He is so nice and respectable. So much so, that I am taking his class again for my next semester - REL3505.
He's the sweetest and really wants you to pass. The toughest part of this class is the 3 long papers you have to write but thats not him its because this class is a GRW class but he helps you with it a lot.
Honestly did not expect to enjoy a history class this much, but this professor just makes everything a pleasant experience. His charisma, his passion, and sense of humor is great. The class included some essays and discussion posts, but they were honestly super easy if you paid attention to his lectures and the videos he presented.
Very good explanations & pacing of lectures. Tends to go on tangents but is always very respectful of the time and student's needs to leave. Very available to discuss things outside of class, very caring & open to accommodating students needs.
He was a great professor. He doesn't close the assignments on the deadline so you can submit them until 2 weeks later, with few points less for late submission. He was a fair grader, and he would respond to emails and grade very fast. However, there were tons of discussion posts TONS, there were also two other papers of 1200ish words. Book required
The class is really easy. The teacher is really nice and his lectures are interesting. If you like history, you will learn a lot. And he gives a lot of extra credit.
Professor Holbrook is incredibly knowledgeable on what he teaches and takes time to make sure his students understand the course material. His lectures are engaging and the group assignments made reading the textbooks even more enjoyable.
Dr.Holbrook is a nice and interesting person. As a non-Christian, I found the course to be very interesting. The assignments were very easy and Dr.Holbrook is an easy grader. The only difficult part I had was remembering to complete the assignments by the due date lol. You can turn assignments late as long as you complete them before he grades it.
Passionate, caring, and understanding. Very human.
Caring and understanding professor who allows late work. However, little to no class structure- we do whatever he feels like doing that day (most of the times it's just a youtube video). Tends to ramble a lot but he's pretty funny. Many discussion posts and 3 mandatory 1200 word essays- but he makes them easy. Textbook is free online but required.
When my American History class with Dr Holbrook first started, I thought I got confused and may have signed up for a Latin American History class. Turns out, I didn't, he just loves talking about it. Babe this is American history, I don't know why we are watching Latino American PBS documentaries. I can visit my fam to learn this. Nice guy though.
He is a great person, he is so understanding with personal situations and accepts late work, he also gives tons of extra credit. His lessons are a little all over the place, but if you put in the work and watch the videos or lectures he assigns you will do great.
Honestly, Professor Holbrook was super chill. We get homework every week but if you plan your time accordingly it's so easy. Plus you get extended time on assignments, whether you have a circumstance going on or not. Overall, definitely take him online if you want an easy class to pass
The content is interesting, but I truly cannot stand the professor as a person. Being fully online has contributed to it. But man... He's been pretty curt, even after initially showing interest, and doesn't seem to care that the due dates are all over the place. I find his lack of communication and transparency to be rude. Very unprofessional.
I liked the readings, but not the professor. He isn't really good at explaining things, and despite my several attempts to understand due dates and policies, he refuses to be straightforward, which makes things so much more confusing. It's not the best look when the students are more professional than the teacher...
He just doesn't seem to care to communicate with us. He didn't respond to my emails when I had questions about the class.
Professor Holbrook never change. He's the nicest human being ever and so understanding. Incredible dude pls take his class if u need 2
The course was very easy and consisted of weekly quizzes, discussion posts, occasional participation assignments and 2 essays. I give Professor Holbrook a 3/5 because although he is very understanding and will fix errors, I constantly had to email about mistakes he made on quiz answers and unclear instructions in assignments.
I highly recommend taking him! His assignments aren't difficult and his lectures are quite interesting and fun. While attendance is mandatory, he does provide extra credits which allows you to make up for those missing days. For instance, I miss two weeks of materials and I was still able to get a 100% for attendance.
Get ready for the chillest class so long as you plan accordingly. Took a session b and had one discussion post and chapter quiz every week. Biggest chunk of the grade is the three essays which are 1200 words each but provides all your needed sources. Very forgiving on late work. He does insert a lot of Latino history too but it's part of the charm
Hes chill but gives a lot of work. he gives a lot of extra credit but its long documentaries you have to watch. But you don't need them to pass, its very easy. You do have to "read" the book cus the assignments are based off of them. literally so easy, and you do have to take the civicsliteracyexam but its so easy just search up a quizlet online.
