tests over the book, not ANYTHING in the lecture
He's a great guy... read the book, not your notes. tests on minor details.
He only tests on the book, just read it, it's the only work he ever asks of you
This class rocks!

Great Teacher. He's a litte flamboyant but a nice guy. Tests are not hard if you read the book/go to class.
I studied my a** off and got a C. I learned so much, but his tests were SO HARD!
good teacher - funny guy
wow, can this man not spell. other than that, and his slight hyperactivity, he's a good teacher. made a class i'd normally find freakishly dull interesting. go to him for help if you need it! he's very good one-on-one.
Dr. Horton is a great professor! I learned so much from him and he kept class really interesting. Also, his tests weren't hard at all if you study a little!
He's a good guy... little weird, well, very weird, but that's all right. I stay awake and it's at 8, so that's saying something.
Easy class, very nice guy, interesting subject.. but he took attendance EVERY MORNING. We're not in elementary school anymore!
I took him twice. Goofy guy with great sense of humor. Knows his stuff. Makes class interesting. Those who thought he was hard are morons that dont study or pay attention in class. He takes attendance but you dont want to skip anyway. Take him.
he's a good guy. crazy, but good. his class was always interesting, and his tests aren't bad so long as you study. very quirky... i think that about sums him up.
Very amusing professor.
I thought that the material in this class was very interesting, but Dr. Horton is not a very good professor. He's incredibly annoying and his lectures really don't help that much. Read everything on your own.
Dr. Horton is by far the most annoying man on the face of the planet. He thinks he is funny and I assure you he is not; than he laughes hysterically at his own jokes. His teaching is fine and the class is about right in difficulty however he makes me want to die. AH yes
Dr. Horton is alright as a teacher, but is VERY cheesy and almost gets personally offended when you don't laugh at his attempts at humor at 8am. He gives like 3 big tests and that's it...I would rather hav more frequent quizzes. A bit tough for a general course.
Test questions ambiguous and He looks like a very sad Cow. Horrible jokes and humor. Treats everyone like your in 2nd grade by taking attendance with index cards You will want to shoot yourself. Do not underestimate the difficulty of this class it is not easy and neither is child adolescent psych
he's got a good heart, but he's not a good/interesting/insightful teacher. Test questions are ambiguous are often difficult to answer even if you know the information (in several of his classes, not just one). My advice: take a different professor if possible; if not, read the book on your own.
He's definitely odd, but the class was straight forward and the tests weren't bad if you studied.
This guy is just an amazing professor! He really cares about what he teaches and is very excited about his work (especially at 8 am). His tests are fair and covers what's in the study guide and what's explained in class.
He is the most ignorant, obnoxious, awkward, and narrow minded man I have ever known. Dr. Horton is like an overgrown child. It is obvious that he has a very limited grasp of the subject matter and his exams are poorly written. The class was a joke and Horton is a fool.
He is honestly one of the worst teachers i've ever encountered. The man is anal, boring, stupid, patronizing, humourless and possibly retarded. I've considered changing my major simply to avoid having to ever take him again.
Unfortunately for me, no one told me that this class has the rare talent to make you stupid and possibly massochistic. He excels in having an inability to relate to students, offensively bigoted opinions, sloppy exams, and a childlike temperament. I hear he also enjoys running over rabbits and faceplanting small children.
This man is annoying. Nothing like making an intro course harder than it should be. Exams are sloppy and unfair. He pays too much attention to detail, preventing students from learning the big picture of psychology. Way to go Horton. If you want to learn psychology, I suggest you buy the book and read the material rather than wasting a credit.
He's so ridiculously annoying. And also rather disrespectful and close-minded to denominations or ways of thinking that aren't his own.
Joseph Horton is an idiot. The man gives totally unfair tests over irrelevant information. He is extremely egotistical and if your essay does not read his mind, then you will most likely receive a 50% on it (and that is coming from a good writer). Do not take this guy for an elective, he will make your life hell.
this prof took perfectly interesting material and made it hell on wheels. turned a general introductory course into a "weeder" course (SMART move) was inconsistant, unclear, ambiguous, and extremely obnoxious at 8am. i worked my a** off and barely carried a C. tests on random details - there are only 3 tests for the whole course; your GPA is screwe
He's AWESOME! He's fabulous 1-on-1 and he's really intellegent, though he might not act it in the classroom. I recommend him to anyone and everyone! One of my favorite professors. Very helpful and test are based off the book, KNOW THE BOOK!
Pretty easy class. Know the book. Enjoy his quirks.
(Sleep and Dreams) This was a great class. We just discussed the reading and took the midterm and final. Dr. Horton is a very animated and fun teacher. He did grade somewhat strictly--he seemed to have very specific things that he was looking for on the test and they had to be said in the right way.
Interesting class. The final is kind of ridiculous
I do not recommend taking a class with this professor if you can avoid it. The class is very boring, test questions are vague and challenging to understand even when you study REALLY well. On papers and essays, he will take off if you say the correct answer in a different manner than what is in his head. He is ridiculous-do not take him.
Worst teacher I have ever had in high school or college. He is difficult to talk to and biased in his test grading. Most frustrating individual I have ever met in or outside of school. Doesn't tell you what you need to know for exams and asks tests questions with "multiple correct answers so pick THE MOST CORRECT." DUMB!!!
Extremely...extremely annoying mannerisms. I found the book 100% fascinating, but he somehow chose the absolute most boring subjects to touch on, making it a painful class to attend, especially at 8 am. The book itself is worth reading though. I'm sure he means well...
Good teacher and he makes psych interesting. Tests/quizzes are difficult and specific. Some people are annoyed at the way he teaches and his mannerisms. I just came to class looking to be entertained and I had no problem.
The material was pretty interesting at times. However, Horton demonstrates obnoxious mannerisms and has childlike moments on a consistent basis. The class seems to be worth taking but prepare for a trip back to middle school.
Dr. Horton covers a lot of infor in an organized way. His tests are difficult, but not unreasonably so. You need to study notes and the book equally. Yes, his mannerisms might bother some people, but he honestly isn't that bad. I didn't like him at first but I got used to his quirkiness. This class is excellent if you're interested in the subject.
He may be a nice man, but he is still has the most annoying mannerism. Tests are hard, but for the most part fair. Grading however is where it is pretty stupid. If you get one bad test an 'A' is not going to happen. Probably the most annoying professor to listen to for long periods of time. His laugh is so unbearable. Like the class dislike the him
Absolute worst teacher I have EVER had. Obnoxious and immature in class. I left grade school 7 years ago seriously grow up. test are unfair, being comprised mostly of material not covered in class. every questions it seems is intended to trick you. essays are unreasonable and if your answer is not what he likes hearing it's wrong. STAY AWAY
HORRIBLE!!! Worst class I've ever had. Avoid like the plague unless you want to take an excessively specific foundations core taught by an immature 12 year old. Biased, unfair tests. Unless you're a swimmer or do water polo, he won't give you the time of day. AVOID!!
Horton is a tough professor, he is very willing to help you though. Just ask him. He's a hard grader and won't round points, but overall I liked him. Just be prepared to work hard... REALLY hard. Read everything and participate in class discussions. He loves that. Also study like your life depends on it, because in this class, it kind of does.
He's very awkward.
Nice person, but (like all the other reviewers say) has very annoying mannerisms. You have to pay attention in and be familiar with the basics of the psych studies he cites, also keep up on reading. Tests are very challenging for a 101 class but not too absurd. He takes the occasional pot shot at presbyterians durring lectures.
The PSYCH 101 class is by far my favorite class this semester. Dr. Horton did a great job. The people that usually complain are the ones who don't do the chapter readings, but even those are interesting.
Dr. Horton is very strict about paying attention in class. DO NOT use your internet and DO NOT look at other papers or he will scream at you and say that he is making an example of you. He will kick you out of the class if you are not paying attention!
You will not like him if you are easily annoyed, easily offended, stupid enough to ignore him and surf Facebook in class, or too lazy to study. Dr. Horton is a great professor- he's funny, he's personable, and yeah, he's a bit quirky. He expects a lot, but you're in college now, so you should really learn to deal with it.
His class, specifically the tests, can be a challenge, but the material itself is interesting and he does a good job keeping class from getting boring.
Best class I have ever taken! He was so interesting and engaging. His tests are easy if you take good class notes, pay attention, and read the assigned chapters. I highly recommend taking him
There are only three grades in the whole entire class. Test 1, test 2, and test 3. There are literally no other grades in this class.
I really enjoy what he talks about in class and the reading assignments. I do have to say that his tests are literally the hardest things ever. He will ask "which one is the BEST answer" when multiple answers could be correct. It's just really tricky multiple choice. Decent guy though.
He has a quirky sense of humor. I have found that people either love him or hate him. Personally, I loved him, but I can see his personality being a problem if you are easily offended. His test aren't easy but they are extremely fair.
Entertaining in class but tests are very difficult. Only a few grades the whole semester so you have to do very well on tests and its hard to recover from just having a few bad grades.
Do the readings, or you may barely pass the class. Tests are hard, but if you study the correct way, you will be fine. Pay special attention to figures in the books that he mentions will be on the tests - they will definitely be there.
Refuses to help you do well in the class, very rude. Lectures are somewhat clear but he doesnt really tell you what to study. Not the type of professor that should be at a college with high standards.
For a Grove City College person, he seems to have his head screwed on pretty straight.
If you're looking for an easy foundations class don't take psych 101. Not because Horton is a bad professor or a bad guy, but he takes his 101 seriously. If you don't do the readings it will hurt you on the tests. The only grades are participation and the tests so it can be hard to do well.
If you do all of the reading and study the material from both the reading and the lectures, it isn't too difficult to do well in the class. The only grades in the class are exams and finals so it is important to do well on those. While he can say some annoying things sometimes, Dr. Horton is a good professor overall and the class was interesting.
This professor is a bit of an oddball. In class, he has a kind of awkward humor that can be funny but only if you like that stuff. His lectures are always very important and usually interesting as well. If you take his class, just remember that you NEED TO READ. However, some students got by just with knowing vocab and connections.
Horton is very socially awkward and will laugh in your face if you ask for a study guide, and will completely dismiss you if you try to talk to him or ask him something in the hallway. Lots of reading, and the test questions are very specific. His content that he's teaching is great, but his tests are too hard and he yells a lot.
Dr. Horton just doesn't know how to teach. Yes granted he may have a PhD, but his teaching style is hard to learn anything. He also needles people and sometimes makes some offensive comments. He thinks his wise crack joke are funny but their not. He's just an all around weird guy that shouldn't even be teaching.
If you're looking to ruin your GPA take him. His final is one of the longest finals out there and he doesn't give you enough time to take it either. He doesn't have very much respect for his students. He'll literally laugh in your face if you ask a question. He's also very strict in the classroom. So don't get on his bad side or else you'll be dead
Dr. Horton is an awesome professor! I went into PSYC 101 really nervous because of what I'd heard from other students. It turned out to be a great class and pretty easy! As long as you read the textbook content before the test you should be fine. I have also taken PSYC 209 with him and had the same experience! Would recommend
Dr. Horton and his magnificent eyebrows are very entertaining in class. His lectures are clear and interesting. He's very upfront about what he expects, but he is absolutely willing to work with you and gives you many opportunities to improve your grade and extra credit. I genuinely enjoyed class with him. Read and come to class and you're golden.
Horton is clear about the expectations; you have to read and pay attention in class. Even if you didn't full on study but did those two things, you'd do fine. His tests only cover what he taught and what you read - no surprises. His lectures are awesome and they do a great job adding to what you read
Dr. Horton is an excellent fellow. He is very passionate about his field and this as well as his sense of humor are prevalent throughout his teaching. He also has an intense enjoyment of cows.
I loved Dr. Horton! His exams are tough, but if you read and come prepared to class you will do fine! He gives so many opportunities to boost your grade (a paper and extra credit) and he truly is so passionate about what he teaches! He is absolutely hilarious and a wonderful lecturer because of that! Take him if you can!
Fascinating class, but he is very opinionated on certain things, and those certain things are a bit controversial. Ignore that bit and you'll love this class. All of the articles we read were interesting and the classrooom discussion was always enjoyable. He is actually pretty gracious and kind in this class
Take Childhood Development with Dr. Horton! Great guy, quirky but kind, makes class fun and has reasonable expectations for students. Not hard to do well, but you HAVE to take good/thorough notes in class AND read the book. If you do both of those things, tests aren't hard. Focus especially on the case studies!
Most entertaining professor for any psychology course. You will learn a lot!
He is very upfront and honest about what you have to do to earn good grades. But when I tell you I read the entirety of the textbook I'm not joking. He is very sarcastic and his lectures are entertaining because he's always yelling about something so you don't fall asleep. Get ready to work.
Dr. Horton is HILARIOUS. He's a quirky dude, and his classes are always really entertaining. I always knew what to expect on his exams, and he always asked pretty fair questions on the exams. He is reading heavy, but a good teacher (He will not recognize you outside of class. Ever.)
I took him for child development, it is a lot of textbook-heavy reading and exams are difficult to understand. You must attend lots of lectures because exams are heavy on the book and lectures, you also have 1 paper assignment. As a professor, he is a bit unhinged and has some controversial views but you will learn a lot if you put in the effort.
Definitely knows what he is talking about, but awful teacher. Extremely strict and will laugh at you for asking something. Barely explained the massive paper. Also very out of pocket.
This was by no means a pleasant experience. I'm really not sure why a PSYC 101 course had to be so difficult, but Dr. Horton found a way. On top of memorzing every word he says in lecture, you have memorize every word in the reading. You have three tests and a final that is worth 40% of your grade, and the tests are on the lectures and reading.
Dr. Horton knows his material but doesn't know how to convey it well so that students can learn. It's not an environment for being taught well. He also makes quips and comments that can be very offensive. He was just not professional with his students.
Definitely a strange man. If you can get past his personality the tests aren't unbearable. Definitely need to study a week out and TAKE GOOD NOTES. If you want a fun class look somewhere else
Had Horton for Psychological Assessment, all exams are essay and vocab so be ready for that, lectures on material are fine, but the book is so beyond boring. Hard to get through but must read for tests. Not too bad of a class, we also had one paper and some in class assignments. He's way better in upper- level classes in my opinion.
Dr. Horton is a hilarious and very unhinged professor. I was never bored in his class. The exams are heavily from the textbook and lecture so make sure you read. He gave clear instructions for the group paper and gives good feedback to help you improve. Your grade is solely exams and your paper.
He was very good at teaching and lectured well. He does go a little fast and I fell behind on notes. It's definitely a lot of reading so make sure to keep up with that. But overall he is very good at what he does and explains things in a fun and interesting way.
Some say he's not great, but his class and the way he taught it was my favorite. He is a little quirky, but it's fun and engaging. You'll never be bored in class, especially if you're interested in children, education, or psychology. The tests are multiple choice and do require reading on your own, but he gives a lot of info in class. He's so fun!
Super weird prof, very out of pocket. Best laugh ever and tells weird stories. Not warm and fuzzy, calls himself a benevolent dictator and cell phone n@zi. Lecture heavy, moves very fast, and lots of reading. If you know the stuff, you'll do well. Extensive group paper project and he is a harsh grader, so put the work in. Overall just odd.
Dr. Horton is knowledgeable, but his classroom conduct was often frustrating. He publicly called me “disappointing,” which felt disrespectful and unprofessional. Despite advance notice for an excused absence (over 3 hours prior), he reacted with visible anger. Greater professionalism and respect would improve the learning environment. Take caution!
Dr. Horton's expertise is overshadowed by his unprofessional and hostile behavior. He publicly humiliated me (in front of the class), calling me “disappointing,” and reacted with anger over a legitimate, pre-notified absence. Such disrespect makes the classroom intimidating rather than conducive to learning. This CLASS was utterly disappointing!
