Nice guy! Very understanding! Not difficult
Very fair, smart caring teacher. ( NO FINAL just a final paper) ONE OF THE BEST!
very monotonous, VERY vague about assignments, but easy grader
He doesnt believe in the eductaional system. he gives you every answer you need to get an A. If you do bad on a test he'll make you write the right answers on the next test and give you credit.. dont worry u can sleep he is really boring
He great, as longer as you go to class and pay attention somewhat you get nothing less than a B+.As long as you do all your work you will get an A. Test are exactly what he tells you to study-do what he says&you'll get an A. Very FAIR teacher.
Once you stay awake long enough to hear what he has to say, he really makes you think about life!!! All that aside, it's almost impossible to fail his class!!! Just do the assignments!!!
wat can i say? hes madd easy! if u dont get at least a B ...u got major problems....
Easy but borin(its philosophy what u except). If you actually listen to him once in a while its MAD interesting what he's talkin about. He takes attendance alot in the beginnin of the semester and does it whenever he wants after that. He's good take him
This guy is easy. You have about 7 to 8 quizzes during the semester and two papers. His final was so easy because he let you have an open book final. He's also nice but the subject is really boring. Just take notes and read his notes given.
so easy, yet so boring. i would take him agian anyday. class is boring, but if you just do a minimum effort, u'll get an easy B, or an A.
a very boring class...fell sleep all semester...many quizs and readings...yet, easy "A" if you hand all works on time and study
He was so easy, you dont need to go to class to do well on the quizzes that he gives, just read his lecture notes that you can buy so you dont even have to take class notes. He was great.. if u go to class sometimes, and do all the work you can get an A-
his exams are easy since he gives u the questions and ans b4 hand. but he is very vague when it comes to paper and everything else. very boring. one min hes quite and slow talking.. the next hes crazy and screams at the class. take him for easy A.
i dont unerstand him
Very passionate about what he teaches. I loved his class. He is the reason that I now understand the method of philosophy. Lectures are abstract, but so is the subject. Pay attention, do work, and you will get an A. He is very fair and loves to see original thinking.
He is so hard to understand. He is boring and made it difficult to focus. the exams and quizzes are quite easy but alot of reading is required for course.
I still can't figure out the point of this class..he doesn't NEED 2 teach b/c the quizzes come straight from his notes which he gives you..he is hard 2 understand & mumbles a lot..but he is a nice man..just do the work & you'll be good 2 go..listen 2 him once in a while cuz sometimes it's interestin
Speaks way toooooo low! Don't come to class-takes no attendance- only come on exam day. Too easy 2 cheat! Don't take in class notes, just go to Ed's bk store and buy his notes (only $5.95) Has sudden outburst amongst himself, not w/students. Nice guy
Hes not bad but his notes are so confusin and we're supposed to study this for this quizzes? This final was confusin as well cause no one knew wut was on it. still, hes pretty easy and a nice guy
OMG, he's mad weird. rules: 1) dont need to come to class excpet for class before quiz and quiz day. 2) buy his notes, and study for quiz with that 3) come to class to get group presentations down (he's ok teacher, but if u do ur work in class, and do ok on tests, should get A or atlst B)
His lectures are very boring and he repeats himself a lot, but the class is pretty easy. Two papers, 3 or so essay tests, and bunch of short quizzes that come right from his notes. Just don't take him in the morning, you'll fall asleep.
I loved his class.....for people who wants to learn and get a good grade....there's your match.
He alright I got a B- at first i really tried and then i don't know i really didnt understand what he was talking about he give 2 exams he does give the quests to prepare he gives a bunch of quizes he does tell you whats on them you have a presentation and an book report I guess you do have to work
Great teacher. Really believes in what he teaches pretty easy class. He gives the questions before the test. Overall this class should be an easy b if you put a little effort into it
too much work, hw, quizzes, essay exams, papers. he gives the questions for the essay so that helped and the topic for the quiz but expect to do a lot of studying for this class. i got an A but i had to work really hard for it. his class is confusing and i didn't understand much of it. take him but study a lot if u want an A.
pretty easy. a lot of it is common sense, i guess. read the books and review some of the material and you'll do fine.
This is the most boring class u can sit through but he goes over the topics really well. Just buy the notes he made for the class and get his book and you will get at least a B
BORING!, he repeats himself alot. you dont really need to buy the books just buy his notesand youll be good. he doent take attendence much, so just memerize his notes and youll do fine. if you want an A you ganna have to READ A LOT
Extremely Boring! And he talks super low But overall easy A
Boring.. the books aint really needed, his notes doe is a must.. I got a B. He test often doe, nothing hard just common sense stuff. Sit up in the front if u wanna hear him
He is somewhat of an easy A. He gives 6 easy multiple choice tests,3 essay tests,2 papers, and a final. He is very boring but gets very passionate the subject. Just write down exactly what he says for essay test and papers and you'll do fine sometimes even gives questions and answers for test in advance Overall Nice old man remember he's always rite
not bad compared to the rest of them study for the quizzes take down his notes even tho hes boring but you can pass cuz he's an easy grader on essays
very educated man. he gave a lot of tests and quizes but they weren't hard. if u are prepared for his class you will get a good grade.
He cares alot about the subject and teaching you about it. There are many quizzes a few tests and a couple of reports. All info on them is from his lectures. He challenges you to think for yourself. He doesn't take attendance and only his notes are needed for his class.
He's an easy A. You don't need the textbooks, just buy his notes. Read the notes, quiz the next day. He drops the two lowest. His final was a take home. There are 3 essay tests. All easy, he gives the questions out before hand.
grt teacher!
He is a very nice man. He gives quizes every week and if you study the material, you'll be fine. He gives about 3 major tests and gives you the questions on the test ahead of time. He is a fair grader. I recommend him.
are you guys f'n kidding me. this teacher is NOT EASY, hes boring! and monotoned on top if it. the class is so confusing, he goes over the notes to fast and you cant read his hand writing at all! his midterm was diffucult and i would def. not recommned taking this class, you'll thank me if you dont wana die from boredom
McMahon's class is not hard in any way because if u r not ready to take a test or quiz he will be MORE THAN HAPPY to let u take it at a different time. It is a lot of reading but he gives u all the questions & answers to his tests. He goes over the quizzes and leaves the answers on the board right before the quiz. You have to be mad dumb to fail.
This teacher is not easy at all! He gives essay test and quiz on the same day! tuff professor.
His class really challenges you to think. He has great insight and you really leave his class thinking (or not if you pay zero attention) Definetly not an easy A, but a good class to take. He is a bit boring and monotone, but when he gets angry he has really funny outbursts. If you're looking for an easy A, don't take him.
he's not as bad as people make him out to be. He gives alot of quizes but if you just read over the notes before class you will do fine. For the essay tests he gives you the questions ahead of time so you know what to write. He ended class early alot and even though he was monotone, his outbursts were entertaining.
This class was boring! tghe teacher is unclear and cant really teach. I would not reccomend this class. Although I hear this teacher is a easy grader in the end. but it painful during the class.
I've had his class at 7:35 in the morning and never fell asleep. His classes are very interesting and you can learn a lot. He gives a lot of quizzes but they are True/False and common sense. The tests are short answers or essays so be prepared to write a lot. Read the Notes he asks you to buy and they will really help you in understanding theories.
He is a nice guy. Very understanding if you hand in stuff late etc. He is a bit hard to understand, so you just have to follow the syllabus and read on your own to know what's expected of you. The class is ALOT of work now that I think about it but its not that bad, you really don't notice. Pay attention and follow the syallbus, Guaranteed an A/B+
Great teacher, I really enjoyed his class. The class is a lot of work but if you come to class and LISTEN you are guaranteed an A. No kidding. Don't rely too much on what the textbooks says, its what he says that will get you the A. Take notes, be attentive, eager to learn and friendly and you'll get your A.
I actually enjoy his class he brings up interesting points and key issues and makes you think. He is an easy grader and you can easily pull off an A if you do your work. It is quite a bit of work but not too bad. I would take him again though
He is passionate about philo and he is one of the few professors that can make it interesting. You just need to show effort and interest in subject to get a good grade.
easiest A, only two tests, and gives the questions before hand, three papers which as long as the meet the length and mentions the various viewpoints of diff philosophers will get good grades, and then the final is takehome, lecture can get boring, but made entertaining with his outbursts and semi rants
Not a very easy class. 9 quizzes, 3 reflection papers, 3 essay exams and a take home final. Need to work hard but if you follow his guides it is easy. Very passionate about philosophy. tries to make the class interesting by his rants. Overall nice professor. Not an easy A but if you do your share you will get an A
Definitely not the funnest class, but it's relatively easy. He's a nice guy and cares about philosophy alot. His biggest thing is to get you to think, and if he sees your effort in your essays and papers, you're good. Definitely need to buy his book of notes too.
He is great, His class is easy and when you miss an assignment he emails you. I loved his class and how easy he grades paper. The book is written by him so it is very clear. The hardest thing to me was these True/False quizzes. I guess I didnt read enough, but he is wonderful when he does not make you regret life or college. Overall 2 thumbs Way up
He was pretty easy but also pretty boring. He definitely has his own opinions about things that he isn't afraid to rant about, but he wants you to rant back at him, even if you disagree with him. He just wants you to make a coherent argument about it. Despite my initial impression of him, I wound up liking him and the class.
How do these people get such amazing jobs? Can't teach to save his life. I'm a straight A student, and from my perspective, I'm telling you to drop this class! You will get at least a c!
Dear God. I could never read his hand writing to save my life. He does care a lot about whether or not we know the material, emails us if we missed anything, and generally cares about us. But, he can be SO BORING. it was an interesting class though, i learned a lot. Just brace yourself.
This class is ridiculously boring. Buy his book of notes and you'll be fine, barely used the other books . The quizzes are true or false and the test are essay test with those yellow booklets and everything. There are these presentations too but it's not a big deal and it's only once. His handwriting is intelligible. Rather easy all round though.
its boring but also easy class to pass. quizzes are based on his notes. papershws are based on the other textbooks he assigned. final is a take home essay.
Great Professor, he really cares about philosophy and wants all students to understand the material. The notes book that he wrote really helps in studying and writing papers. If you work hard you will get an A. Definitely taking him next semester.
If you don't really enjoy philosophy then he is probably the best professor you can take. He is very clear cut about explaining each philosopher's viewpoints and even wrote a book of notes specifically outlining the course. I didn't buy it which made the quizzes slightly challenging but other than that just pay attention and you'll be fine.
This class was such a joke. Just show up for the quizzes and buy his blue book of notes and you're good. The papers require no effort because he's such an easy grader. Just pack your essays with your opinions, no research required.
Such a great professor!!!
Really nice, old professor. Participation is not mandatory and although he does not take attendance be sure show up as he knows if you do not. 3 reflection papers and 3 in class exams- he gives you guides for both which are very helpful. Final paper was take home. Do the work assigned and show up to classgood grade :)
this is the worst professor i've ever taken. I stopped showing up halfway through the semester and still managed a B. The book of notes is online in the e-reserves of SJU - no need to buy it. Do all of the assignments and the group project, as well as study the notes. You'll be fine.
The class isn't so terrible. Theres a lot of papers and homework assignments. and his lectures are so boring, the class always falls asleep. he doesn't take attendance so.
Wants you to do well.. easy grader. Very intelligent man.
Really caring person and is very intelligent. He repeats all of the important info that he wants you to know so if you pay attention during class, it'll help you big time. Lets students make up quizzes and exam and is always available to speak with you outside of the classroom. One of the best PHI professors -- wants you to learn not just memorize
Not a really hard class at all, however McMahon will speak the entire class so you will get bored. Just buy his book of notes and read the section you need to know the night before a quiz. Quizzes are true/fale and multiple choice. 9 quizzes and 3 refection papers, no midterm. Overall, McMahon is a good professor who's nice and cares about students
Not too bad of a class, talks all throughout the lecture. His book of notes helps a lot. Quizzes are true and false for the most part. Will make sure you are doing well in his class. Easy grader. I bombed a midterm and he still gave me a B thus far. Just keep up and you will be fine!
This class was awesome. He is an easy grader who does not ask for much. Easy A.
One of the greatest professors at SJU! He cares about his students and genuinely wants them to learn and not just memorize information. He's always available to speak after class and is willing to help you with your grades. He definitely has a rich knowledge in philosophy so you'll learn A LOT especially if you enjoy the subject. A real gem.
Let's be honest, there aren't a whole lot of good philosophy teachers in St. John's. Compared to the other teachers, McMahon is one of easiest and fairest you'll find. He gives 100s to all essays that have effort, gives 100s for tests if you write anything related to what he says to class. He is boring but if you want an A, take him.
Prof McMahon is a good philosophy professor. Although he is monotone and drones on and on, he makes lectures easy to understand. He's pretty boring, but he has his moments. He gives review sheets that have the same exact questions as the test. His handwriting is terrible. Out of all the textbooks, I only used the book of notes and the 5 dialogues
He is constantly giving quizzes and papers!! However, he grades really easily but I swear when he is lecturing he is just mumbling crazy garbage! He is pretty much certifably insane and he sounds it!!
Take him if you can, you don't have to show up to class. Although there are a lot of papers and quizzes, he grades really easily. There were 3 tests, as long as you work hard and buy his book of notes you can get an A.
His lectures can be long but he's a really great professor. He is very helpful if you speak to him after class. You can tell he really wants you to understand and succeed in his class.
He gave so much work but he is an easy grader. There is a group project. 3 essay tests, 4 homework assignments that are based on a book which you need to write an essay for, 2 or 3 reflection papers, a bunch of topic quizzes, and a 5-6 page Final paper. A good quality is that he is lenient about when the paper should be handed in.
Prof. McMahon's class consists of 8-9 quizzes, 2 reflection papers, 6 2-page homeworks, 1 group presentation and 3 essay tests. Final is take home. His lectures can get very deep but he's very funny. You MUST purchase his book of notes and required texts to ensure success. His lectures will get pretty boring on some days.
Seriously take him for philosophy. Yeah there is a lot of homework and quizzes, but he grades easily. Quizzes are a bit tricky but they aren't too bad if you read the book of notes. He tells you what is exactly on the exams, so just write whatever you read. Handwriting is awful but everything you need to know is in the book of notes.
grades so easilyyyyyyyy but so much assignments. he literally talks to himself everyday, easy to cheat on test sit in the back
He is one of the most understanding professors at SJU. Somehow I failed my first exam because I completely misread the question...I went to speak to him about it and he said to not worry because he will give me a chance to make it up thru my other exams and papers. I managed to pass my other exams and papers and in the end got a A-. Take him guys!
Fr. McMahon is not the most engaging prof. . Gives quizzes very often that are from the textbook. Tests too that are always essay format and very hard. Papers he always gives As on as long as they make sense. If you have to take him it is not the end of the world, just prepare to study hard.
Eh, no. Only thing is he is not too harsh on grading papers but the teaching is all over the place. Handwriting is not very legible and prompts he writes are more confusing than they need to be. Hard to communicate outside of class, probably most boring class I've ever taken
He assigns a lot of homework and quizzes. As long as you study you'll definetly get an A and he grades very easily. He gave me 90's and 100's on essays that I barely put any effort on. If you take him, there's no way you'll get a B or lower.
Boring lectures and TOO MANY papers. Between his homeworks, book reviews, reflection papers and essay tests, I'm pretty sure I wrote approximately 65 pages of material this class. However, they aren't hard to write and he grades them super easily as long as you follow the format he provides, making the class an easy A. Study the book of notes too!
Look he is a nice guy and cares about philosophy, but he is super boring with his lectures. He is not engaging at all and talks for the whole time and sometimes over. You also have read and write a lot. He is an easy grader though.
Not a good prof to take if you aren't into doing a mountain of work for the class. Boring lectures do not make it easier to understand what is happening. He does care a lot for his classes, but that only goes so far. He doesn't post grades up on the online portal so you're on your own to know what you have in the class at any given time.
He is not that difficult of a professor, yea he gives a lot of writing work but as long as you write something that relates to the assignment you'll be fine and he accepts late works for full credit. Tests and quizzes are 100% based on the book. Lecture on the other hand is extremely BORING and feels like forever being there
DO NOT take him unless you want more work than all your other classes combined. He rambles about nothing and made the course difficult to understand. He makes you buy a book of notes that he wrote himself instead of just giving it to us for free. He assigns at least 1 book report or reflection every week, sometimes 3 due in 1 week + an essay test.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Absolutely disrespectful towards students & other departments on campus. Does not care about trying to talk all the trash about others in his class lectures. Nearly walked out on multiple occasions.
I took professor McMahon just recently actually, and he is the worst. he does not help at all, and all of his lectures make no sense. gives 2 or 3 papers and test but is a very simple grader. he is disrespectful towards the students and does not give you a clear understanding of anything.
Personally I do not do well when a teacher is just talking at me the whole time rather than engaging with the class but if you are able to learn that way go right ahead! The only reason I did exceptional in his class was because I watched Hank Green on Youtube break down the topics from class. Hank Green + The Book of Notes= at least a C quizzes.
Not the worst teacher - he is a professor that just talks for the whole class time. It can get boring at times and his handwriting is kind of hard to decipher. He assigns a lot of papers and quizzes and also doesn't update your grade on Canvas, so you're surprised when you see your final grade. Not too bad as long as you study the book of notes
Good Prof. but a lot of HW/papers.Does not like emails but is very understanding and flexible.Lectures are boring.Just study for quizzes those are the only things you have to worry about.Everything else is straightforward.I wouldn't be worried about this class just a lot of assignments.Quizzes are ok just study and they aren't worth that much (20%)
Very old and hard to reach thru email, rambles a lot during lectures and gives mad homework, super hard to understand him and he can be disrespectful toward students
