Tends to skip steps without explaining how he got there and frequently makes mistakes. The juggling is cool though.
He's a really nice guy and all but his teaching stinks only because he seems to skip things sometimes, or go by them too fast. Sometimes he doesn't seem too confident about what he's teaching either...confusing for someone who ain't so good in math

Joe is a very nice guy. He goes at a relatively slow pace and most of the students seem to follow his lectures well. His juggling skills are awesome. Take this course if you want a high mark.
i suck at math, :( but he is a nice guy, and well I really like that he tries so hard for us, I find it easy to relate to him, and he is defintly ver approciable, to bad the class is so damn early I always end up sleeping though :(
Very nice guy but his inexperience in teaching shows in his lack of confidence in lectures. Midterm seemed to be easy enough so there really is little point in attending lectures, textbook will do just fine.
He's great! Funny, and does juggling tricks on fridays! He made the midterm easy, but I haven't gotten my mark yet so that's to be determined. He is a good teacher and you can approach him about an assignment or anything else!
Great guy. He has lots of office hours and is willing to help any time. He is very approachable. Nice to see a prof who cares about his students.
An extremely nice guy, and very helpful and approachable. His physics background doesn't really help with financial math, but despite this seeming lack of confidence I think he does a great job.
Joe is an very helpful professor. His cheery personality makes him very approachable for you to ask him any questions. Assignments can be tricky. His lectures can get a bit lost sometimes, but if you pay attention to the key points the course is very easy. Went into final with 80, came out with 87.
he is a very nice guy..show his readily and willingness to teach...he makes some mistakes but who doesn't..neways that's it
Joe's a really great professor! And he's hot, too.
Nice guy! so funny! he juggled in the beginning of class to keep our attention for the 8:30 class. Midterms had a nice high average. Gives lots of examples. Assignments are a little harder, but tutorials help. Exam was just like the midterms - study from those. Great class - take it 4 sure.
He took over after our prof went missing. He is awesome! Has very clear examples and juggles for the class sometimes. He is young so he understands what its like to be a student.
Really positive teacher that usually didn't screw up his examples. I'd have to add that the juggling was a great touch that helped me wake up in the mornings. Great guy, good charm, usually gets a laugh or two every class.
Joe is the BEST TEACHER EVER! lots of patience, clear explanations, and willing to repeat hard concepts to make it easier for us to understand. I went from hating math to loving math cuz of this guy. YAY FOR JOE!!! Trust me guys... you want him as a teacher!!!
Best Prof. I've had thus far. Really makes an effort.
Joe is a really helpful teacher, very approachable and is always willing to explain. However, his explanations tend to confuse sometimes and his notes could be a bit more organised.
Just Awesome!
aigh herez wat gotta kno...the ta was a**** and a half...@ first i thoght him and prof were honestly gay but w/e...anyz bk 2 the course itself...it aint bad..hez a gud prof...can b better but ya...id giv em 2.5/5
kinda fruity
Best math prof. I have had at UW thus far. Explains course material in terms that the class can understand.
Great professor, knows how to explain the material to the class in unerstandabe terminology. Just needs to stop with the juggling.
Joe is a great prof! He is so funny and is always very easy to understand. Definately my favourite prof.
Funny and an excellent teacher. Teaches the course very well and makes a sincere effort to help. Go to class and you've got a pass.
Best lecturer at UW so far. Excellent explanations. Entertaining and engaging.
Joe is awesome! He teaches (and juggles!) like a pro! His class is my favorite to attend, even though math is NOT my strong suit. I hope he sticks around for a long time!

Very good professor. He always makes his lectures interresting and there is no chance of falling asleep. Funny guy, always makes jokes, and a good juggler too.
Joe is the best. He really puts effort into his lectures and he did a tremendous job. Students who gets him as prof should be grateful. Moreover, he always finds the balance between letting students learn stuff and not making the exams too hard. Most of my friends are satisfied with their marks.
GREAT INSTRUCTOR
Joe Rocks
Awesome prof. Won the math faculty fight club, good at ultimate frisbee, and juggling too!
Great prof, hilarious guy, fun juggler too. My classmates gave him the nickname "G.I. Joe".
Great prof. Never thought I could understand this stuff. But he made things pretty clear and was funny. Good juggler too. Keep up those trick of the weeks.
Great prof! Good analogies, good jokes to keep the lectures interesting, and awsome trick of the weeks!
Awsome prof. Good juggler shows some nice juggling tricks every week. Way to go joe. Always try to make some kind of jokes to keep the calss attentative
Excellent presenter! Explains his stuff really nicely. Seems to be well prepared before the lecture. Easy paced. Quite helpful. And quite funny too! Made our first class of the day something to enjoy! A master at juggling!
CLICK! That's the sound your brain's gonna make after one of his lectures. He's very easy to understand and very helpful if you go up to him with questions. Also does a good job keeping the class interested and amused for the duration of his lecture.
Good lecturer, excellent juggler! Helpful with office hours. The exams are fair, but he does like to throw in a "challanging" question here and there.
I'd say just go to class for the juggling because that makes it worth. Also a really funny and nice guy. He makes lots of cheesy jokes, but hell you have to keep calculus interesting eh? Really smart and helpful if you go to his office hours. He has a weird thing for harmonic oscillators though.
great prof. very easy to understand and follow. fair assignments and midterm, and even easier final.
Great at explaining stuff, very helpful, entertaining on fridays (with juggling) ..ooh and he has the cute factor going for him too ;)
*sigh*...what a sweetie
Awesome prof - nice and clear too.
Very cool and open professor, enthusiastic about teaching and a pleasure to attend his lectures. His juggling is an extremely welcome change of pace in our term and his humour/sarcasm is great (in my opinion).
He's awesome, really funny, not sarcastic, not rude, polite... I'm really glad he's my professor.. i love the jokes he makes, i mean they aren't rolling on the floor hilarious but it really makes the class a lot more comfortable and interesting.. and he juggled for us. i can't think of one bad thing to say about him
He's a really cool prof; makes classes fun and enjoyable and his juggling rocks! Best prof I've ever had; not to mention...he's really hot too! Go to class it's be worth it; assignments are time consuming but midterms not too bad.
BEST MATH TEACHER I'VE EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRR HAD!!!he's so good! actually, i'm not even in his class...i just go there. and there's ALWAYS a full class, people don't even have places to sit! that's how good he is =) ... West for life.
Cool professor. You will feel happy to attend his class. Teach you both simple and hard examples. However, must prepare well to the final
A cool guy with a sense of humour, and when his jokes stop working, let's juggling will keep you focused. But I wish he would use ACE like every other lecturer, instead of students relying on attending class to obtain any piece of info.
awesome prof, very fun to listen to his lectures.
As much as I enjoy his lectures, he is not very creative and pretty much sticks with the fundamentals and the examples don't necessarily help us with our assignments.
PERFECT NOTES. His writing is very legible and he explains things so well. I came into 128 thinking it was going to be the hardest course ever, but I got better than I did in 127. If you need to take math, take it with him! Makes going to class enjoyable. He juggles too!
He copies the course notes onto the board during lectures which don't help with the assignments. He's a sadist, whenever someone misses a tutorial or an assignment he just couldn't hide the smirk, he's coy, doesn't answer your questions, his assignment solutions are handwritten omitting a lot of steps, seems like a nice guy on the surface...
Best prof I've had so far. Very clear and organized lectures and notes, enthusiastic about teaching, exams and assignments that are clearly related to what he's taught, corny yet funny jokes and amazing juggler!
Makes a ton of mistakes on the board, the typical daily excuse: "What am I doing? Just wanted to make sure that you're paying attention!" His class was an independent study unit, self-learning is the only way to go, honestly who copies textbook examples an use them for tutorials...
Regurgitating the coursenotes is what he does best... getting a paycheck in university doesn't get any easier than that... Absolutely pathetic... what a...
Best Prof i have had...his board work is perfect and he explains things well. he is funny and you can tell he loves to teach.
Word is that he had a bouncer on first day of class checking IDs..this only explains how popular he is within a tough curriculum
Great teacher, his notes are detailed and very helpful. If you fail his class there is little hope for you. The guy is just that good.
He's very enthusiastic, obviously interested in his work, and is quite funny. He also looks like Steve Nash a bit.
The best prof I've ever had. He's very helpful during office hours, his lectures are easy-going, and he's very funny. However, he won't bell curve, but fortunately his tests are very fair. Be careful though: this class fills up very quickly.
Amazing professor. By far the best I've had in university, his lectures are crystal clear and the board notes are perfect/amazingly helpful. He can make even math-haters enjoy this class.
Good sense of humor, explains concepts clearly, answers questions raised by the students with great details. Great professor!
Best prof for math I've had. Amazing personality and very helpful.
I LIKE HIM. He is a good professor. Although Calculus is hard, I would have liked to take this course again and again because I love differentials, yummmmmmm x10
Amazing Professor, helpful, manages to keep our interest in the course!
I hate calculus, but this prof is honestly amazing! He is full of corny jokes but they are actually funny and make the class go by a lot faster. He also often juggles for us before class and seems to genuinely love talking about math both in class and for help during office hours :)
Great prof! He's entertaining, clear, and lectures are interesting. Sometimes he goes on small tangents (blamed on his baby keeping him up at night), but they are entertaining and don't take away from the lecture. Problems on assignments and the midterm were reasonable. Is always sure to answer questions as well as possible.
good lecture, okay personality. i don't think hes much that special
The course is a known bird course. Nonetheless, he teaches with great clarity and humour. He would juggle in class. The course almost omits logic on paper. But he adds those back in conceptually via oral explanations. Assignments are long though. 5 hours each. "Answer-checking" is recommended.
His lectures are easy to understand. The midterms are fair, but there's only enough time to finish the test. Wish he took more time doing examples in class. Makes small jokes here and there, and he juggles once a week! Time goes by real fast in his class (: . The only thing you reaaally learn is introduction to integration.
Department of AMATH has a lot of good profs. He is for sure one of them. But he does not stand out at all. He has good looking, good organization, good oral presentation, etc. But where has his personality, his uniqueness, his soul gone? He is really passion-less, and his feminine behaviors sinks my heart.
Great Prof! Its an easy course with not a lot of content, he tries is best to keep you engaged and interested. Is great to talk to during office hours, genuinely a great person.
Joe West is def one of the best math127 profs! He writes the tests and exams, as well as all the assignments. His notes are pretty helpful and as long as you study from his notes and do all the assignments and make sure you understand everything, you should get a decent mark. But be warned math127 is definitely a lot of work and effort!
It's a pretty straightforward course, and he's a straightforward guy. He makes small jokes that are entertaining, but he doesn't try too hard to make them (which is good). He is clear in his presentation, and his quirkiness makes lecture enjoyable. It's easy to pay attention, and generally easy to understand the material. He's a good prof.
Assignments were pretty easy, midterms were fair, final was fair. Overall, an interesting class. Great personality, terrible (but funny) jokes and very approachable - willing to talk about material outside of the curriculum. Also, he's awesome at juggling!
GOOD PROF
Probably the best math prof I've ever had. Clear notes and great explanations. Well thought out assignments and the exams are always very fair. Extremely helpful outside of class, he's a really nice guy. Hard to sleep in his class as he always tries to keep it entertaining with his juggling and so-bad-it's-funny jokes. Wish he taught more courses.
fun lectures, very helpful outside of class, amazing prof. Only small problem is all his examples from class are from the course notes, but no biggie.
BEST PROF EVER! if you have the opportunity to take a course with him, no matter how difficult DO IT, you won't regret it..this man can make any course interesting, and he teaches the content very clearly. I plan to be taking any course of his i can from now on :)
Took his class during winter 2012, the class was fairly interesting in general, he explained concepts well and makes the class interesting.
Really good prof
Really really good prof! I love him so much. Never feel bored in his class. His notes is clear and helpful.
Great for lectures. That's about it. The course notes were terrible, his office hours were limited; very unapproachable. Doesn't post full assignment solutions. Quirkiness is fun in lectures, but very not fun when I required extra help with something.
Great prof. Very enthusiastic about what he teaches and he ran the course at a good pace with relevant assignments. In addition, he had 5 office hours a week. Always there to help and easy to talk to.
Great lecturer. It was nice to be able to go to class and simply pay attention /follow along in the course notes without scrambling to write everything down (except his examples, which were useful to have written down for assignments). Doesn't provide full solutions to problems, but will explain things clearly in office hours.Funny.Would recommend!
The best prof ever I have meet in Waterloo! Explains everything clear with a humorous sense. Assigns straight-forward questions in both midterm and final. Strongly recommended taking AMATH 231/250 and/or Math 237 with this prof!
one of the best profs in waterloo. I heard that he is a pilot ever. He is very humorous. I find his trick pretty funny. And he is good at organization and skip some easy parts of classes for saving time.
very good lecturer, always explains what he says, easy midterm, just go to his class and complete assignments and you will get a good grade. him and stephen new make calc easy
really really nice, plays little ball tricts every Friday, very responsible and clear, very very helpful in his office hour, always smile at you, and always makes you feel welcome and pleased to ask questions. Clear notes and fair exams
Amazing Prof. Really accommodating when I was having difficulties enrolling. Hilarious and spontaneous.
Joe West is a fantastic prof. One of the most organized and genuine teachers I've had. That being said, it was not an easy grade - you gotta work for it. One thing that did bother me was despite his friendliness in the lecture, he has little mercy on midterms and finals. Don't ever think "Oh there is NO WAY he will ask us that". Still good tho
AMAZING prof, definitely choose his section if it's available
Very difficult final, very tough assignments. For some reason he doesn't like when one doesn't go to lectures or tutorials. In some courses, the material is structured poorly, so that non-participation in lectures can make one's life difficult. Make sure you do all of end-of-section problems.
He's one of the best prof I've had in Waterloo. I took his Math 237 course and I really enjoyed it. He is very funny and very helpful, and his lectures are very clear. His exams are fair, so if you study you will get a good grade. Definitely will take another math class with him!
You don't realize how good of a lecturer he is until the last 2 weeks that he's sick and other profs have to sub in for him; then you realize, just how lucky you were to have Joe as a prof, especially for the integrals portion of the course. Overall, best math professor in Waterloo with great notes, presentation, and passionate professor.
His speech is clear and hilarious, and his lectures and notes are well organized and useful. He gives a lot of examples which are very helpful with the assignments and exams.
clear&logical explanation, super nice&funny, cool juggling tricks, easily one of the best profs i've had so far, highly recommend
Really passionate about his job, clear explanations, organized notes, funny, helpful during office hours. Everything is fantastic.
Perfect instructor
He is a very special lecturer! His class is usually hilarious and he makes good puns sometimes. His handwriting is very clear. And he hardly erases and rewrites (appreciated!). If he teaches any other classes, I will be so happy to take. He also has a lovely personality. Tomorrow is AMATH midterm but here I am - writing feedbacks!
Great prof with lots of jokes/puns and good juggling tricks! His explanations and board notes are very clear and he prepares you well for exams.
one of the best profs ever had. even in courses with difficult material he does his best to make you prepared, and you can tell he really cares about people passing. lots of jokes and keeps the lectures interesting. 11/10 would take an course specifically because he would teach it
Joe West is such an amazing prof! I wish he taught more courses outside AMATH! He explains course concepts really well and uses relevant examples. He is hilarious and keeps students engaged during lectures. Highly recommend taking his courses!
I'm sure he's a great prof in person but online term with this guy has been god awful no office hours, no tutorials, support only through email or piazza, and the guy doesn't respond to half of his emails either. 90% of his piazza answers are straight one liners that don't really help either, got more help from classmates. avoid online with him!
I have to echo the commenter before me. Absolutely horrible as an online prof - he gives us an unreasonable amount of work between quizzes, assignments, exams, oral exams, non-sensical participation scores, etc. Not to mention, he doesn't even take the time to have any live things like office hours/tutorials. Worst academic experience of my life.
Joe is an awesome prof! I had him for both MATH 237 and AMATH 250 and I loved both courses! He's a great lecturer; both the written component of his lectures and the verbal explanations are great and very well structured. He's a super friendly and very caring prof. He always took time to thoroughly work through any questions I had after class.
He is the 1st prof, makes me open an account to write a review. I didn't take his in-person class, so I don't know whether his rate was legit. But I can definitely say those two commenters below were telling the truth. He avoids any works & interaction with students. He punished students like lower their marks if he/she ask a question twice. Awful.
Nice prof, very friendly and explained lecture clearly. Understanding students and willing to change the grading scheme based on student performances. There are 10% participation mark which are easy to get if you checked all announcement s before asking stupid questions in piazza.
A great professor! ALways explain concepts in a clear and concise way. Very engaging.
Very clearly
Really nice Prof. cares about his students and is really entertaining in class.
I did this course in Fall 2021 and it was my first in-person term. He made my first in-person class experience amazing. Funny prof, clear grading scheme, fair exams, and incredible juggling skill lol. Many times his juggling before Friday lectures made my day.
