He is a very nice guy, comes across easy going, he is flexible, however.... His assignments are very hard, off of masteringastronomy.com. His tests are very hard too. He gives study guides but even if you study hard, the tests are hard. I would not reccomend him. I just hope I get a decent grade!
He is a very nice & really easy to talk to.He tries to keep his classes lively & fun.His homework actually isnt hard you just have to pay attention to the wording of the questions.Tests are fairly easy, you just have to know the stuff from the study guide.I've missed alot of his classes and still scored above average on the tests. Plus he's a cutie
Hes really helpful and easy to talk to. He really wants you to get a good grade and will work with you. Tests are worded a little hard to make you think but if you do the homework and pay attention in class you'll do fine.
I think he is very helpful!! He is looking out for you and will help in anyway he can. He is new this year but this is his 2nd semester. I'm worried but if I read the assignments and look over notes taken in class I should be fine. Besides I can't resist a cutie like him. Very snappy dresser. Just hope I get a good grade. (Fingers crossed)
Dr. Jensen is very knowledgeable and passionate about astronomy. I came out of this class loving astronomy, which says a lot. Homework every Friday, quizzes before each test to help prepare and he grades on a curve. Very very interesting and funny. I loved this class.
This class was way interesting. He shows a good deal of interest in the subject that he is teaching, which is great. Attendance was not mandatory, but in order to really learn things, ask questions and remember things on the test, it was beneficial to go to class. He explains things so that everyone understands. Very good professor!
All around great teacher. The course is fun, and Dr. Jensen makes it even better. He knows his stuff, he is a retired Astronomer but he is still young so he is not boring at all. Extremely helpful and clear about what he expects. Doesn't take role, you just have to do the online homework and show up for the tests and you'll get an A.
FANTASTIC TEACHER. Dr. Jensen makes everything a lot more fun and very easy to understand. Most of the homework is done online, which is quite nice. The class isn't extremely hard, but it also isn't extremely easy. I recommend this class.
Take from Dr. Jensen. very understanding and funny. pay attention during class! he may seem nonchalant about what he's teaching, but the little things show up on tests.
Take astronomy from Jensen! He is a really good teacher. I had no interest in astronomy before this class but now I love it! He's really funny, the homework is online and pretty straightforward, and the tests are fine as long as you study.
Great teacher! Went to caltech and then hawaii for his phd. so he knows his stuff. Very passionate about astronomy and physics.
Really good teacher. He is very passionate and helps students to gain that passion. Tests are semi difficult, if you study you will do fine on them. He curves them which helps a lot.
Joseph Jensen is the best entry level astronomy professor you may ever have. Be prepared to actually learn science in his class but I promise that he explains it in a very non intimidating way. He tells a lot of corny jokes but he knows he is corny which makes it better. If you do the mastering astronomy homework you will do great on the tests.
Loved this professor and class! His lectures/power points are awesome. His teaching method helps everyone to understand some of the hard concepts in astronomy. The tests are challenging, but take notes and study and you can get an A. Take this class from Prof. Jensen!!
Perhaps the finest professor I've yet encountered. He's passionate, intelligent and wants you to succeed. He'll do anything he can to help you understand the often difficult content. It's not an easy class though. The tests are hard, but curved. Attendance and studying are very important. Do yourselves a favor, take Astronomy from Dr. Jensen.
The professor is extremely kind and hlpful. He lets students decide how the class will be graded. He also lets us decide how many tests we want, and what percent of our grade they will count for. He's extremely helpful and he makes sure that each student understands the material. I highly recommend taking class with him!
He wasn't a very good teacher. He said some things were not on the test and they really were. His test were made so you cant get 100%. He told this to us. He is confusing. I feel he does not want you to pass.
Terrible teacher First off he doesnt really give you the tools to succeed He makes these test that he tells us that you will not get 100 percent on the test He makes you buy the book to use Mastering Astronomy online but you rarely use it. You never know what your grade is because he doesn't post it on canvas He gets side tracked TERRIBLE TEACHER!!
I really enjoyed Professor Jensen's class. I think he could explain things well, he really tries to go over things until all of the students understand. You can tell he is passionate about the subject, and he wants his students to do well. I would recommend him, I think he's a very good teacher. His tests are difficult, but not impossible.
The best professor I've ever had. Take his class, it is difficult but he wants you to succeed and will help you get there. He gives fun lectures and provides lots of other opportunities like study groups and star gazing. The material for this course is hard, and the book only helps occasionally, but it was worth it.
Jensen's lectures were somewhat interesting and he tried to make it light, however he does not provide study guides for his tests and publicly declares that his tests were made so you couldn't get 100%. He isn't particularly clear on what will be on the tests. If you want to pass you must be HIGHLY involved and attend group study sessions w/ TA's.
This is a great teacher who cares a lot about his students.I was told the class was an easy A, but it's definitely not. You must work hard and attend class, but isn't that what going to school is all about? Tests are pretty hard, but he scaled every test score up.It is not impossible to get a good grade.I learned SO MUCH about astronomy.Good class.
Professor Jensen as a person is aaswesome! His class caught me off guard though. It is a little tougher than you would think, so don't underestimate it. If you pay attention during class you should be able to pass tests. He also allows you, as a class, to adjust how things will be graded. You could put no emphasis on tests for example...
Super smart guy, and is very invested in the success of his students. LOVED the class, and i don't even like astronomy. Everyone said the test were hard but i did fine, and i never even took notes. If you pay attention you'll do fine.
This class was awful! He does not give you study guides for the test, and you don't know what to study for. He isn't clear on what to read for the homework, he wants you to just search keywords (it is an electronic book). The class was pretty difficult, PAY ATTENTION, and take advantage of the study groups.
I loved this class. Dr. Jensen is fantastic. He totally got me excited about astronomy. I would 100% recommend this class. There were some people who struggled with the tests, but I thought they were manageable.
I loved Joseph's class, it was something I looked forward to. I learned a great deal in his class. I hated the stupid moon cycle stuff though, just sayin'. Everything else was awesome though. I would recommend this class.
Dr. Jensen is an absolutely wonderful teacher. This class wasn't easy for me and I had to work hard for my grade but Dr. Jensen truly wants you to succeed and will work on identifying your best personal study habits. I would definitely recommend him for ASTR 1040.
Easy and fun lectures. He is willing to help whenever and answers questions very well and clearly. provides great examples for difficult concepts. if you just come to class and listen and do the easy homework you will pass. he makes the whole course interesting.
Professor Jensen was wonderful. He was really helpful with any questions and even posted the lecture powerpoints on Canvas for review. He is nice and respectful to all the students, and I would totally take his class again.
Dr Jensen does not teach with clarity and test are hard
REGISTER. Do it now. Seriously this guy is good. Get a seat in the front, it's a big lecture hall and you want to be able to hear and interact, trust me. I have retained more information from Dr. Jensen's class than any other class I've taken at UVU. Potentially the best teacher I've ever had.
Dr. Jensen wants to teach us how to learn. By trying to accomplish this, he puts a lot of emphasis on things we can apply to our lives like the moon phases! Good luck The tests were hard because you didn't know what to study for. He made you earn the grade based on performance, not effort. If you like to be challenged, he is your professor!
Really good guy, but his tests are really hard. He doesn't provide a study guide so you're pretty much taking a chance on what you study for. Besides the hard tests and complicated grading structure, hes a good guy.
I feel like the homework is just "busy work". His tests are pretty hard, and he doesn't tell you what to study for. Luckily, though, he drops the lowest test score. My class was only 50 minutes long, so lectures weren't too bad, but most were boring. You will definitely have to work for this A.
I wouldn't take his class ever, ever, EVER again. TONS of homework that felt like busy work and didn't really help my understanding. Zero compassion, not clear in his lectures, and tons of reading. Do not take this class from Jensen!!!
Really good class, although it was a bit difficult. Professor Jensen is a great guy and he's willing to give feedback on any questions or comments you might have. The tests are pretty difficult, but the lectures are very interesting and you can get good notes from them. I would definitely recommend this class.
Dr. Jensen is a good guy, but I disliked his class. His online video lectures he assigns put me to sleep and the classical music he adds to the background is sometimes so loud and distracting I have to skip the video all together. Watching "The Cosmos" with Neill Degrass Tyson pumped me up for this class, but now I almost loath astronomy.
Dr. Jensen is great! he is a great guy and I really enjoy his lectures. i really feel like im actually learning something although my test scores don't exactly reflect that. thought the tests are kinda hard, i would recommend this class.
Dr. Jensen is very good at explaining concepts in Astronomy. It's a difficult class, but it's a fair class. If you work, you'll get an A - as simple as that. I went into his Astronomy 1040 class expecting it to be somewhat easy because I love Astronomy, but I ended up having to work to get my grade. However, you don't have to be a genius to pass.
He gives way too much homework and his test are insane hard, if you really don't know your stuff you will get a terrible grade in the class
Dr. Jensen is very enthusiastic about this class but it was a bit harder than expected. You have to watch about 30 minutes of video before every class and they have short quizzes on them. Test are harder but he does try to go over everything in class. He does have meet up times that should be taken advantage of because they really do help.
He is such a great guy! he was my favorite professor. His class isn't hard but he does make you work for it. There are always homework assignments online and he uses the Iclicker in class a lot for points. He is very informative and is always respectful to the student sand their questions. The class isn't mandatory but if you want a passing grade
You need to attend class for the information. There is homework but its just watching videos and answering question. By the end of the semester the videos got long. As long as you pay attention in class and to the videos and study a little you should be able to pass fine. He's a pretty cool guy. He gives some extra credit on tests
I like Astronomy, but this class was too much effort. There's usually 3 homework's a day and it gets hard to keep up. He doesn't do study guides for his tests so it's really hard to know exactly what to study for. Although I didn't need to study because of how much homework you have. Oh, and mastering astronomy for the homework was $80.
Dr. Jensen is a really great professor that really made his lectures interactive. The tests are pretty hard though, but the mastering astronomy and quizzes help.
I loved this class! I was always a C to B grade student and I will get an A in this class. Dr. Jensen makes it easy by putting videos on canvas that you watch and take a quiz on. Most the test material is from those videos. He makes astronomy interesting. Great teacher and I would definitely take this class again!
Jensen was a great instructor but you certainly need to put in effort to get a passing grade. Short video quizzes, online homework, projects. The book isn't as useful as what he provides so I don't think it's necessary to pick one up. Make sure to go to class because he goes through material more thoroughly in his lectures. Easy to get a hold of.
Great professor, the class is pretty hard, so don't expect to get and easy A! There is a lot of assignments and a lot of outside projects you have to do as well! If you're going to take this class be ready to do EVERY assignment he gives! You'll need it.
Jensen is very enthusiastic about astronomy and is great at explaining things clearly. The class is pretty easy. Not a lot of hw. He uses the iClickers every day so skipping will hurt your grade. The only reason I got a C in his class was because I only did half of the hw.
This class was so much fun to have with Jensen! You can tell he really cares about what he is teaching. There is a lot of online videos for homework, but they are not hard at all. He is so nice and fun to get to know outside of class.
Be there. You have clicker assignments. Videos are amazing that he makes for your homework. I would take this class again just to go through it again for no credit. Awesome to be taught in the planetarium.
Dr. Jensen cares a lot about students' success. He gives clear, detailed lectures that are interesting and amusing. He helps students learn and apply concepts, rather than teaching for tests. He is respectful and will answer all of your questions, whether in class or during his office hours. Students know that it is their duty to prepare for class.
Really good guy, you can tell he loves his job. Very clear on the grading and you have to work for an A. You must stay on top of your homework and actually study for tests. You can't just show up for the tests and get an A in this class.
Dr. Jensen was a great teacher! I enjoyed the class a lot. All the lectures are on canvas, so if you take notes from the videos beforehand all you got to do in class is sit back and listen. The dome was really cool to have too! If you are going to take astronomy, make sure it's in the planetarium!
As an over all it was a good class. The homework was a lot but not hard. The test you need to understand the concept, not just remember numbers and names. Class can be a bit repetitive but not always. You should go to class but you dont need too
Super great guy, but his tests kick butt. They are so difficult, and now matter how hard I studied, each test is a challenge. Also, attendance is MANDATORY.
Dr. Jensen is amazing! You can tell he's really passionate for astronomy. He prioritizes your learning, not only learning astronomy, but also learning how to learn so you can survive the real world. He teaches the material well and makes things easy to understand.
He gives you a lot of homework which is pretty easy but then when it comes to the tests, thats where you're going to fail. he makes the tests way harder then they have to be. each answer to a question sounds the exact same, each answer is a little different enough to sound just like the right answer when really its the wrong answer.
Professor Jensen is a fantastic person and really loves Astronomy. I did not like the class very much because he gives a lot of homework that is not very hard but time consuming. The tests will kick your butt. Take advantage of office hours to understand things for the test.
Dr. Jensen is so fun! Astronomy is hard, but not when you take it from him. I wouldn't say it's an "easy A" but if you are willing to do the work, you'll do just fine. He is so funny and caring, he makes class enjoyable. Make sure you come to class though... there are participation points every day!
Dr. Jensen is very knowledgeable and both passionate about what he teaches. If you reach out to him, he will be more than glad to help you out. He makes astronomy fun and challenging at the same time. You HAVE to study for the test because they are pretty hard. The homework is fairly easy but time consuming. I bought the textbook but NEVER used it.
The teacher gives a lot of videos to watch before class, which can be annoying and tiring because the video can last 20 minutes or even 30 minutes. the test are really hard. You really have to pay attention. Please do not take his class, because his tests are super super harrrrrrrrrrd.
Dr Jensen definitely knows what he is talking about but the course load is absolutely insane, ELEMENTARY astronomy was a harder class than my classes that are actually supposed to be hard. Not only is there a ridiculous amount of assignments, but they're worth like 5 points and he grades them very harsh. The tests are hard too!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Joseph Jensen is a great professor. Super smart and knows what he's talking about.. maybe a little too smart for just being a general class. If you don't put in the work and study hard, you won't pass. He's entertaining and very funny. He also loves to go on rants. Going to class isn't necessary if you watch the videos and do the home.
Dr. Jensen is by far one of the best professors I've ever had. He is fun and passionate about astronomy and explains things well. He is never condescending to his students but makes every one of us feel valued. His class isn't too hard but it does require work. Thanks to Dr. Jensen, I love and understand astronomy. I totally recommend him.
This professor is so hard! I study really hard for his test and can never get a good grade. His test questions were multiple choice and worded where every answer was right, but you needed to find the BEST answer.. which was annoying. If you do not have good test taking skills or want to watch hours of videos don't take this class.
Jensen is a really nice guy. You can tell that he loves his job and his students but his tests are IMPOSSIBLE!! except the final which is just all your pasts test so just study those but I still got a B with failing almost every single test.
Dr. Jensen is a great professor! He makes it clear that he helps you learn how to learn. If you do the homework, attend class, and put in a little effort its an easy A. His expectations are clear and he's very organized. He was always entertaining and well prepared.
He's a really good guy, but his lessons feel repetitive. You have to watch videos he's recorded before every class which teach you everything, so class can feel pointless. Besides that the class is relaxing and you do learn a lot.
Prof Jensen is quite a nerd, but his humor is great, and he really wants his students to succeed. Make sure to study for tests- they aren't the worst but definitely require some brain power. Show up to class or else you'll lose participation points, but it's a pretty chill class other than that. Put in the work and you'll do just fine.
You'll rely on his homemade videos that need work for each quiz due before every class. Multiple choice test are difficult regardless if you know the information or not. Projects are easy to do between your various choices to pick from. Want help from him? Good luck.
one of the harder general classes i've taken but you truly learn a lot. he makes class fun and he really knows what he's talking about. tests are extremely hard but you can still pass the class if you do the homework. he also makes the time to see what answers you got wrong and go over them. highly recommend taking his class.
Doesn't talk about what is on the tests and tells you just to study more. Lots of videos to watch.
There was four test. But he drops the worst grade and gives five extra credit questions on the test. There is a lot of homework, but it is not that hard to do, it takes time to do it. Mostly the videos before every class. Reviews a lot. Most of the class is spent asking questions and him answering them. A great teacher and I learned a lot.
Lots of homework. Every day there were at least 2 assignments due. The assignments were pretty easy. Tests were tough. Even studying you'll struggle. There is a lot of material to remember. Very lecture heavy but interactive at times.
Dr. Jensen is has a clear criteria and goals regarding any astronomy class he may teach. He is very accessible outside of class, he really wants you to know and understand the concepts. Very willing to work with you. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
His classes are good, but tough. There is always homework online to do before every class. He's very passionate about what he teaches and actually cares about the topic and students. I might of personally not done so hot in his class, but it was still very interesting and a highly enjoyable class!
We had 10-minute videos of all the things we needed to know and then in the actual class, we only did Q and A or review questions. The Q and A was very specific to the person asking the question half the time. So we all just had to listen to answers to random questions that didn't really mean anything. And the tests were unnecessarily difficult.
Heres my beef with Dr J: 1. Most of his teaching is done through homework videos ranging from 3-35 min. 2. His tests are less of a measure of your knowledge of the material and more of a measure of how good of a tester you are. He likes to trick you in his tests. 3. He does not teach well to beginners. He is a good guy who is passionate though.
He is nice enough but not a great teacher.
Dr. Jensen is a jerk. He's not willing to work with you and his method of studying or review for his tests is ridiculous because his tests are extremely hard and there are always lots of trick questions. Honestly horrible teacher and 30 students this semester failed his class along with myself. I would never take him again. Don't take his class.
Dr. Jensen has been my favorite professor so far and probably will always be my favorite! I want to take another one of his classes again, even though thats not my major, because he was so fun to go to class and listen and he was very visual and hands on, which I LOVE! I have also learned a lot about earth and about our solar system!
Dr. Jensen is passionate about astronomy but often forgets we don't all have the same understanding of science like he does. He often says he doesn't want to trick us on the tests we but there are always trick questions or weirdly phrased questions. It seems like he is trying to trick us. He is willing to offer help and explanations if you ask.
If you are looking for a class that is test heavy but gives no way to review what will actually be on the test, has long boring lectures and is catered toward those who have a lot of prior knowledge of astronomy when its only a basic level class then be my guest! seriously, if you don't already know ALOT about astronomy don't take this class!
He seemed intimidating to me until I realized he is a big jokester. There is a lot of material, but if you watch ALL of his videos, take notes, n go in during his office hours maybe once a week, you will do great. He curves the test grades n drops your worst test grade. He is an amazing professor n does everything he can to help you succeed
I honestly loved this class! Dr. Jensen really knows what he's talking about and does well explaining concepts that are difficult to understand. I would highly recommend taking it in the planetarium as it makes it way easier to visualize everything. Take notes on the video lectures! That's where the information for the tests are!
I really hated this teacher. He was the worst one I've ever had. He was hard to understand, made his tests way too hard, and was not helpful at all. He was cocky too and instead of helping you with the actual test would only help you with your study habits.
Joe teaches tough topics, but he's so easy to approach and works to help you understand the topics. He's not a mean guy at all. He's flexible on the assignments as far as due dates go.
I really enjoyed taking astronomy 1040 from Dr. Jensen. I thought his lectures were interesting. If you are proactive in completing assignments you will pass this class. The workload is not as bad as some of the other reviews might make it seem. If you spend some time studying for tests you will perform well on them. He also puts a curve on tests.
Dr. Jensen was amazing! The workload is a little heavy, but it's completely manageable! His lectures were engaging, and it was a unique experience to have the class inside the planetarium.
Very tough for a "Beginners" Astronomy class. To much homework and expects to much out of you. If you like astronomy, then maybe for you.
