Brilliant teacher! The tests were a little difficult, but he always gave bonus points if he 'screwed up' or if the class average was below what he expected it to be.
took human biol from him. fill in the blank & short answer tests (very leniant w/ answers & adjusts scoring), 2 little papers and one big final paper. DO THE READING. You can't make it thru this class if you don't study. It's a TON of information in only 1 semester. 2 finals, his (same as others) and the dept. (mult. choice)
This guy is awesome. I went into his human biology class not wanting anything to do with biology, but he made it fun and interesting. He's a funny guy and he's really lenient on the scoring. It does take a bit of studying, but it'll all be worth it.
He is very very easy to listen to. I had an early morning class and always managed to stay awake he has an actual passion for the subject. He treats you equal and is always willing to work with you.
We are only about half way through the semester but if you are registering for Fall, DO NOT register with him. He is a terrible teacher. He makes things needlessly complex, requires a ridiculous amount of homework for a 4 credit class, and he's mean. I really wished I would have taken this class with someone else.
Extremely complex way of teaching. All tests are essay, no multiple choice and very hard to understand. He's a very nice guy, but makes things a lot more difficult and complicated than needs to be.
His tests were a bit hard. He likes things to be explained completely but short as well. Once you get used to his test ( all short answer, NO multiple choice) it is not bad. If you do the homework and the takehome tests it is easy-ish. He is alwys willing to help you if you don't understand or to answer a question you might have.
He is hard. But he wants to make his student understand the detail. He is helpful. He is a good teacher if you want to learn from him.
Awesome teacher!!! He knows A LOT and I really enjoyed his class. He is also very helpful and wants you to do well. It is a very work intense class but it's also a tough subject that he is making more managable if you are willing to work for it!
pure essay tests
really awesome
Great teacher. Thought he was a little out of his element at first the way he pronounced things, but he knows how to get you to study. Essay tests. You will learn lots and it will sing in. Great prof if you don't mind working a little and value knowing your stuff in the future. Very kind and helpful.
He was a very difficult teacher. I didnt like his tests, they were all short answer. He also does hs lectur on a powerpoint, and goes pretty fast so i would recommend printing the powerpoint off to take notes on. He emails the powerpoints. He is a very helpful teacher! You just have to spend a lot of time on his class if you want to do well.
Awesome teacher. Be willing to work hard and study hard. the hard work will pay off. he has a great passion for teaching and his sense of humor always keeps the class interesting.
Dr. Karren is a great professor! He's always prepared and he's very enthusiastic and funny, which keeps class entertaining. Biology is just hard in general... so expect to work hard in any bio class. He doesn't give homework, just keep up on the lectures and read your book. His tests are fill in the blank straight forward, Short answer. NOT ESSAY!
This is a great teacher but a very hard class he goes off power points he flips through them a little fast . There is a lot reading. The reviews dont really help because there is so much info that needs to be studied the tests are short answer no homework
he just actually read everything in the powerpoint ( you could do it by your self ). not really helpful when explaining. tells a lot of joke in class.
He's a good teacher, knows a lot but he really LOVES details teaching and in the exam. You really have to read the book everyday for 2 hours if you wanna pass this class, and read the chapter before he explains it bc you might don't understand the lesson. He is willing to help, that's for sure but you need to study hard.
Professor Karren is not the easiest teacher. As long as you follow his power points (which he will email you so you can catch up if you missed a class or a section of notes) you will be fine. You HAVE to study the powerpoint's exactly if you want to get an A in his class. He is a GREAT teacher and will help you with any questions. Highly recommend
He is a great teacher. He pushed you to understand the concepts. He genuinely wants you to pass his class. His class is pretty tough, but he is very helpful and explains the topic well. I definitely recommend Dr. Karren!
He is a great teacher, and he takes the time to make sure you know the content. Prior to doing a midterm or final, Dr. Karren will do a review, clearly outlining the things that we need to know. That was very helpful.
All I have to say is he needs to improve on his teaching skills. He expects you to memorize every word of a power point to take his tests. Those power points are confusing and are not even his. Taking a class with him was the worst mistake i did. Do yourself a favor and choose someone else.
Dr. Karren is nice, but I think he needs to add more teaching into his lectures. It's more of an information dump. Lots of studying and memorizing.
Dr. Karren is more than willing to give you his time to help you understand things. Is very kind & funny. Gives good lectures, knows what he's talking about. If you ask him questions about the quiz or the midterms he'll help you with it. My only complaint is that his tests are too hard. It would be much better if there was some multiple choice.
Tests are really tough, long answeressay style. Reads from power points in lectures, you could stay home and read them yourself. Book is a must if you want to understand the class, you will have to commit to studying everyday for this class. I would not take another class from him, ever.
Dr Karren is great. I would take from him again. His tests are tough but he gives a lot of extra credit and he is extremely fair. If you want to take anatomy and physiology just because they are pre-reqs and you want an A then you should re-think a profession in the health field. If you want to learn and understand the material, take from Dr Karren
Dr Karren is a great professor! This is not an easy class, must study to pass. 4 midterms and 1 final, if you get 90 in all 4 midterms you don't have to take the final, If you don't, you take the final and drop the lowest score of the midterm. 10 points from each midterm comes from an online quiz. I used videos from bozeman science channel to study
I am really happy I took my class from him. You have to go in with the mind set that you will need to study ALOT to pass and you will do just fine. His tests are essay answer only HOWEVER he throws allot out and then you use those to study for the final. He drops your lowest score, and gives you 10 extra points if you do the online quiz. TAKE HIM!
I really enjoyed Professor Karren's lectures. His tests are tough but if you study they are not too bad. There will be some opportunities to improve test grades and one of the exams will be replaced by the final.
Dr. Karren is awesome. He may seem tough because of his short answer only tests but he really helps you plan for what is on the test and gives bonus questions. He truly wants you to understand and wants you to be good physicians someday.
Not an easy class. Tests are Fill in blnk, not mult choice, but he throws out 5-8 questions on each test & those points are given as ex credit towards the test & then become questions for his final. Gives online quiz before each test that gives you 10 pts ex credit. Power pts a must. He's kind, fair & funny. Retaking his class for better grade lol
Loved him! He has power points and all of his test questions are from there. Attendance isn't mandatory but it's helpful because this class is intense if you aren't the best at science and he gives a lot of great analogies. 4 tests worth 90 points, one final and pop quizzes worth 10 points. You can keep taking the pop quiz until it's all right.
Dr. Karren was the most amazing lecture teacher! He cares about how you're doing and making sure you understand. I learned so much, the human body is amazing and he knows it in and out. This class is challenging, don't take it if you're not going in 100% full throttle. He wants you to push yourself, but he's kind. Don't be afraid to ask him Q's.
He was a great teacher!! Expects you to work hard but is there for you if needed! Very specific on what he wants his test answers to be, if your answer doesn't match.. getting points is hard! Short answer tests. Be prepared to read the text! I read every chapter, word for word!
The lecture time the professor has to explain all of the material is very short, so it will be all on you, must study. Dr. Karren is always there before and after class to clarify questions you may have. There are 4 midterms and the final (short answers). Quizzes every week that will help your grade, study for it! I Highly recommend Dr. Karren!
He makes you know more than most of the other anatomy professors at SLCC but is a great teacher. Listen to his lectures, read the book and his slides, and study everyday. I'm taking him again for Human Physiology and would take him again for anatomy.
Study hard and you will do great. He gives you every opportunity to succeed in his class if you do your part. His tests are hard but they make sure you know the content. Really a great professor.
Professor Karren really wants you to learn what he is teaching. He takes his commitment to his students very seriously. He also takes his commitment to medicine seriously. his classes are not easy, but you will learn a lot. He is one of the best teachers i have ever met.
Great Teacher, study hard you will do fine. It is not an easy class. He has great knowledge of human body in and out.
If you want a good solid foundation for nursing school or other programs, this class taught by this teacher is the best choice. But be warned, this class is very difficult. But you will leave with a better knowledge from his class than some true/false easy class. He is not an easy choice, but is sure the best choice for the long run!
I hated his tests. He asks ten questions in one question and if you don't answer every little thing the way he wants, he gives you half credit. I have never such low test scores in my life. I'm retaking the class and it will NOT be with Karren!
Dr. Karren does care that you succeed. The problem is that he has been doing this so long that the information is second nature to him. I struggled with his teaching style as he sits in the back of the classroom with a pointer and reads off the slides. I have nothing against him as a person, I just did not get a lot out of his class.
He teaches this as though this is a review course rather than the course that it is. His teaching style is reading from the PP. He is a really tough grader and anal about spelling. -1 point for each wrong letter until the question 0. All of his tests are short answer with a few multiple choice. No pictures and wording can be tricky. Go elsewhere!
His teaching method does not work with all (for me) . He has been doing this so long he forgets that some are learning this for the first time. The way he words his questions on the test will get you the most. Not to mention he like to be ahead of the lab. I think he cares but I dont think teaching his game.
Dr. Karren was by far the BEST professor I've had. Not to say this class was easy by any means especially because i took it in the 10 week summer semester. I have never in my life learned as much as I did here. It is honestly all on you to study and learn the concepts because his tests are essay style. He is willing to go above and beyond to help u
Dr. Karren definitely knows his stuff but I feel like he wants you to learn the material into too much depth. He tests on how things are related to each other/physiology rather than the main points/actual anatomy. All his tests are short answer. Pay attention to the small details in the PP slides, he wants you to know the material inside & out.
Karren has been known as one of the hardest professors but I think he is still a great one. All of his quiz's are extra credit. I loved his lectures but his exams are VERY hard! If you know his powerpoints inside and out, it'll help a lot.
Dr. Karren was my favorite teacher I've ever had. There are five exams that are all fill in the blank, and if you get 90 and above you don't have to take the final. Also about 10 quizzes worth 10 points all extra credit. His test and quizzes are not easy and you have to work for it, however, he is a fair grader. Awesome teacher.
Dr. Karren was very understanding, kind, made you remember things, made work for your grade, and a great teacher. His exams and quizzes were very hard, but the quizzes were extra credit and there was some extra credit in the exams. Tough grader, but very fair. I took him for anatomy and he is by far my favorite science teacher.
He really is an awesome teacher and so caring. He wants all of his students to pass and goes out of his way to help whenever he can. I always print the powerpoints and write notes on them, that makes note taking much easier
Karren is the greatest Anatomy Instructor. Take him you will not be disappointed. It will be the hardest thing but Karren tries his hardest to help you all you need to do is ask.
I took him for anatomy in the spring and took his physiology class this fall. His tests are tough. He doesn't do multiple choice like other professors, he really wants you to know the material and does his very best to make sure you understand it. Highly recommended.
He is one of my favorate professors. Great and funny guy! Tests are not difficult as long as you read and study the materials. I would regard him as very fair professor . He gives you oppotunity to pass his class. Read deeply and study pictures in the textbook. You will pass it!
Amazing. If you truly want to go into the health field and have a strong desire to learn then take him!!! I really don't think his test/quizzes are bad IF you did study & put in full effort. His questions make you really think; he dissects your brains with it but not at all tricky.
Karren was an awesome professor! He was so cool and so kind, he really cared if you passed and was very funny! His class was the hardest I have ever taken but he really makes you know your stuff.
I really respect professor Karen. He knows what he is talking about but he makes you work for your grade. If you are a visual learner I would not recommend his class. He does not put any anatomy pictures on his test and all test are short answer. He does off a lot of extra credit but you have to study to earn the point. Be prepared to study!!!
Dr. Karren is generous with his grading but he expects you to work hard to earn it. He's willing to help whenever you needed it & offer extra credit through his quizzes. Print the slides to take notes & study. Use textbook as a backup. Attendance not required & tests are short answers. He'll go over the correct answers for you to take note.
Dr. Karren is a solid choice for me. He'll read off the slides and he's open if you had any questions. He'll give you a quiz by the end of every lecture which those counts as extra credit. He's kind that he wants all his students to succeed. The tests are short answers and he'll go over with you. Make sure you write it down to study for the final!
I would not suggest taking Dr. Karren if you are new to anatomy. He goes through his lectures dryly and in a hurry so it is hard to catch everything you need to know. Even though the slides are accessible, he doesn't put everything you need to know on them. His tests are all fill in the blank. Be prepared to study 16+ hours a week for his class.
Dr. Karren is a great professor! Basically if you keep up with the quizzes and study for them, you won't need to cram before a midterm (which is technically impossible, i would know) His quizzes and midterms are essay style but don't let that scare you! It's mostly a short answer, showing your work, or listing steps to processes/mechanisms.
Dr. Karren was an excellent instructor. At first his testing style is intimidating as most questions are essay style, but as long as the effort is put in youll do fine. His tests make sure you understand the material and prevent students from skating by. He has a great sense of humor, helpful, and fair, and an all around like-able guy.
If you take Dr. Karren for anatomy be prepared to put in a great deal of time outside of class studying the material. Attendance at lecture will help give insights into what material will be emphasized on quizzes and test. He offers extra credit and tests are fill in the blank.
Dr. Karren was a really tough teacher. He made his tests so you really had to know your stuff. But if your major needs anatomy it is really beneficial. I just made flash cards out of his power points and studied for at least an hour every day and it was not a hard class. Be prepared to know anatomy like the back of your hand!
Karren is very kind and is willing to help you out a ton to make sure you pass his class. There was no homeowork which can be challenging if you/re someone who learns better that way. There would be a weekly pop quiz but it was always just xtra credit. None of the test were multiple choice but he drops your lowest midterm score. Overall great!
You will learn so much but I took this to get the Bio credit out of the way and it was the hardest class I have ever taken. But he is an incredible teacher and really funny. He also can rock a turtle neck.
Dr. Karren really cares about you do in his class. He is not easy but he makes sure you know the material. His tests and quizzes are short answer which is intimidating at first but you'll get the hang of it plus he sends practice tests. He will meet you outside of class is you need extra help and he really does care that you do well!
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Karren. He is the absolute best. One of the most genuine professors I have ever had. His class is hard so if you take him you will need to STUDY. But he gives you plenty of opportunities to earn a good grade in his class with extra credit. Don't be a slacker and you will do great.
Dr. Karren is a very good teacher. He knows the material he teaches very well and genuinely wants you to learn it. This class in general is hard as there is so much material to learn/memorize. He was always willing to explain things again and go over any material I didn't understand outside of class. Plan on studying everyday for this class!
Super nice, funny, and caring professor! Textbook wasn't needed, but lectures are important and lots lots of studying as the tests and quizzes are not multiple choice.
Biology is a tough class, but I thought Joseph was able to give ample extra credit for anyone to get an A. It will be tough to handle with other classes and work but you just need to put in the time and effort and you'll get an A. Do what he says: go to study labs, read through slides before class, go to his lectures, study with peers and office hr
Dr. Karren is an awesome professor. He really makes you work for the grade that you want. He offers tons of extra credit. Once you figure out how to study for this class and take his tests it gets easier.
Is anatomy hard? Yes! Does Dr Karren make you work for it? Yes! But he only wants his students to succeed. His testing style is hard because it is all short answer so you do need to study. But he has 10 quizzes that are 10 points each that are all EXTRA CREDIT! And he throws out test questions. He gives you every opportunity to succeed. Take him!
If you are not a very good test taker, do not take this class. His tests are write-in answers, and you really have to work hard studying to succeed. With that being said, he is a great all-around guy, and he gives you SO many extra credit opportunities that I had 120% in the class at one point. You will learn so much more than an easier class.
Prof Karren was alright, he's tests were crazy hard. Does not give out study guides. All the weekly quizzes were extra credit but not enough to make a huge difference. Prepare for a lot of reading and studying time outside of class, if you have a full time job or other responsibilities, good luck keeping up with material.
You will need to study because he doesnt take it easy on you. 10 quizzes that are all extra credit. 5 midterms that are 60 questions but basically gives you 20 extra credit points because he only grades 50 of those questions. The final is directly from previous quizzes and tests. He wants you to succeed and gives you every opportunity to do so
Dr. Karren is hands down the BEST professor that I have ever taken! He takes as much time as you need to help you learn if you are not understanding a concept. He truly wants you to succeed and do well in his class. He is hard, but offers a lot of extra credit. You will basically know the final by the end of the semester. Very fair grader, AMAZING!
First day he said don't expect to get better than a B. All exams are fill in the blank. All questions are spatially oriented and uses words to trick you Ex: tract instead of nerve. 1.5 hr for 60 questions. Heavy physiology especially when the department got after him for not giving partial credit. Expect 30+ hrs weekly studying. Engaging.
Don't get me wrong, Dr. Karren is awesome and funny. He teaches well but his tests are the hardest tests I have ever taken. His tests consist of all 'write in the answer' and definitely pushes students to see who deserves anything above a C. An example of his test is "from a coronal view, what is the most inferior/medial aspect of the cerebrum?"
Lectures are rushed. He doesn't teach in terms that are easily understood. Forget him explaining in simpler terms. This class is not for beginners. Tests are SO HARD, all essay. Expect to spend 40-60 hours a week studying, no joke. He wants you to understand at his PhD level, I am an intro student not PhD. FYI I am a great student A and B student.

Dr. Karren is really nice and funny but you really need to study a lot to pass his class. his test are all short answers, so no multiple choice. he does give a lot of extra credit
*Took this course during COVID* Dr. Karren was not adaptable to moving to an online course. His lectures were always hard to understand- choppy because he needed an ethernet cord-took weeks to get. His quizzes and test are hard. You need to put in A LOT of hours to pass. When struggling, I reached out through email- he was not much help.
Honestly, I should have not disregarded the worst comments on Ratemyprofessor. The good comments are all the talented students who took this class as their first and second job. He would read off of PowerPoints so quickly, which anyone could have read themselves. He's a good person, but good god he can NOT teach.
I understand anatomy is hard, but to test us on things that were not on the powerpoints, the lab book, and on dead bodies that some parts are unrecognizable because we haven't studied on a dead body rather of drawings/pictures. He made an announcement about how everyone failed the first exam and to study more. I wonder if anyone passed at all.
Truly horrendous. All his tests are write in answers instead of multiple choice. You need to fill in blank power points that he doesnt even fill in himself so hopefully youre good at spelling. He also is constantly looking back in his notes for the correct terms and offers no study guide for his ridiculous exams. Take anatomy from someone else
I was assigned to Pro. Karren after my original profess wasn't able to teach. I was nervous reading all the negative reviews on here but he actually ended up being a really great professor. His tests are hard, but he makes up for it with the amount of extra credit that he gives. He truly does care, wants you to succeed. Study from powerpoints.
Professor Karren is amazing. He is always willing to help and wants his students to succeed. The tests are very difficult and sometimes confusing but he gives extra credit for the ones that didn't make much sense. He also has a lot of bonus quizzes in order to boost your grade. This class is difficult and does require about 15-20 hours of studying
This professor's lectures are mandatory for full credit, but aren't engaging. His quiz and test questions are so specific it's next to impossible to figure out what information he's asking for. He uses an online textbook but then all his test questions require a level of knowledge above and beyond both what the textbook and lectures provide.
Weekly quizzes which are very difficult because of the way they are worded, almost intentionally confusing.
His class is SO HARD! Lots of homework and exams every week. In every class you already have to know everything, he doesn't explain, he just gives a review and expects you to know everything already, also he doesn't give you any material to study besides a PowerPoint with lots of blank spaces to fill but he doesn't give you the answers either.
This is a hard course! You have quizzes every week and the questions are difficult, but the amount of extra credit he provides makes up for it. The midterm and final come from a bank that your weekly quizzes come from and it's super helpful to make quizlets with the banks. He runs his class in a very simple manor and I loved him.
