Great Prof! Follows the reading and very helpful. Tests are a cinch if you study the notes. Real easy going and into the material too. Take him if possible!
He is an awesome professor. Take him if you need an A.
great teacher! dont ask him about sharks but cool otherwise
his exams have subjective ?s but they come right out of class notes. just go to class and you will easily get an A. Also he has built-in xtra credits in exams!!
Easy A
Easy A, Take it! even if u dont need the class, it will higher ur GPA! GIves Quizes only four of them, and sometimes cancels class or even lets u out early! Dont buy the book its not needed
So nice, so interesting, ans so funny!
One of the best teacher's I've ever had. Plus he's in the band Lisboa.
best teacher ever!!! his band is awesome and he's a super hottie!
best teacher i've ever had
You don't NEED the book, but I would reccomend it. Kirkland goes over everything in te book plus more in his lectures but sometimes you can miss things, which is where the book is helpful. He is SO SO SO funny and incredibly intelligent. He can make even a 3 hour class interesting.
Awesome.
Best Professor Ever! He is extremely nice, funny, helpful, and very intelligent; would definitely recommend. Makes a 3 hour class interesting and dismisses early too :). Very minimum light work (5 short, 1-2 page easy papers and final exam). Make sure you go to class (takes attendace) and take notes for the final exam. Easy A!!!
Highly intelligent(aka walking encyclopedia), respectful, professional, and objective person. He presents to you philosophical ideas w/o biases, but w/criticisms. It's the way professors ought to teach. He really wants you to enjoy philosophy. I gained an appreciation for philosoph. Grades fairly. Read book, think & attend his lectures. Got an A!
Great teacher! Very extensive vocabulary (like a walking dictionary), however, he explains everything in great detail. I had little interest in this subject before the semester, and ended up loving his class. Read the book and write down whatever he writes on the board, he allows a notecard on midterm and final. I recieved a 94% on my midterm :)
Great teacher. He is an extremely intelligent guy who seems to know everything about life. Teaches philosophy with ease. Quiz every week and a total of 2 exams (including final). Exams were fair and covered the majority of the lectures. Class is only out of 100 points so you gotta be careful not to slip up from time to time.
This is one prof that knows what he is talking about and presents it in a crystal clear manner. There is a quiz a week but it has built in extra credit with it. 2 exams (midterm and final). Multiple choice and short essay. You are allowed 1 notecard. This prof wants you to succeed and helps you to succeed.
A great teacher, I hate Phil though i loved his teaching style.
Awesome teacher! Loves the subject. He talks A LOT and I'd say attendance is pretty crucial because he does cover a lot of the textbook (which is not an easy read) and really helps you understand. He's cool, though, fun and easy on the eyes. ?'s for exams come straight from weekly quizzes (which are easy as long you attend classes).
Very good professor. He talks a lot but that is the only way to teach so much in so little of time. Very clear. Don't miss on weekly quizzes they are large part of ur grade. His tests are very similar to weekly quizzes. Almost too easy but very interesting!
AMAZING professor. Very intelligent. Nice, very helpful and funny. Definitely recommend taking him. I was very scared to take this class (hate philosophy)he actually makes you like the class.
I had J Kirk winter semester 2010-2011 and he was by far the best teacher I have had in college. Maybe ever. He uses a ton of pop culture references, although some date back a little, but he is super energetic, a blast to listen to, and it's hard not to enjoy his class. One time my phone went off in class, and he sang along! It was Africa by Toto.
Kirkland is GREAT. Highly recommended!!!!
VERY easy teacher. Never read the book, don't bother buying it. He's very easy going, he makes class fun, and he's a very enthusiastic lawyer--I mean philosopher :)
Great professor, easy class as long as you pay attention and take notes. 3 tests throughout the semester and allows you 1 notecard per test. I put all the notes that we took and put them on the notecard for the test and got an A- on all the tests. Take him if you can you won't regret it!
Easy A if you attend lectures and take notes. Get to use one 5' by 5' note card every exams. 3 exams total. Multiple choices and two short essays. Very funny and charismatic guy who is afraid of sharks. Ask him about sharks if you take him please:)
Joe is one of the funniest professors on campus. If you don't like professors that talk at you, this class can be a bore, but he tries to lighten it up with jokes. Class was fairly easy. 3 multiple choice/two essay questions exams and you can use a note card. 5 written responses. If you don't understand the readings, GO TO CLASS!
Awesome professor!! Makes the subject current and interesting. He's very intelligent, kind and understanding with a great sense of humor!! Show up to class, pay attention and take notes and your good for an A. Besides this is one class you will want to show up for.
He issuch a great and understanding teacher. Knows his stuff and is good at teaching it to you. Cracks jokes every so often which lightens up a 9:35am class! Has to be one of my favorite teachers at WSU that was actually good. Not hard, just go to class & you'll do fine. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Truly a great teacher! He is helpful with the material and each students situation. Gives plenty of examples and is super funny in class. Material is a little in depth but He explains it well! Take his class over others!
He has a great sense of humor that makes his lectures very enjoyable. You can tell he's a lawyer by how well he speaks and how large his vocabulary is. As long as you attend class and take down the notes he writes on the board, you should get a good grade in this class. You might even gain a new appreciation for philosophy!
One of the greatest professors Wayne State has. He's super passionate about the subject. We learned differing viewpoints from certain philosophers and case briefs. Very interesting class! Must take with Joe!
Best teacher by far! He knows his stuff and gives you plenty if information. Lectures last till the end of class but you will be mesmerized. Test are pretty easy if you pay attention and show up but if not, you can forget about it! Everything you need to know is in his lectures.
He is by far thee BEST professor i have had at WSU. His lectures are to the point and he will clear up anything you need cleared. He truly cares about his students and that you understand what he is presenting. There are online quizzes due every week that aren't bad if u go to lecture, 3 response papers, midterm & final. Overall GREAT professor.
Kirkland is amazing I highly recommend taking him for this class, your midterm and final allows you to make a giant cheat sheet and I got an A in the class.
The best professor I've ever had. Clearly cares about his students and the subject. Highly recommended. Helps explain everything without dumbing anything down. You have to read difficult assignments, but if you pay attention in class you'll be fine. A+
He is a really good professor. There was a online quiz every week, and two tests. Really passionate, and caring professor.
AMAZING professor! Really cares for his students and makes sure everyone understands the material. Weekly online quizzes are not hard as long as you pay attention, which is easy with his enthusiastic lectures. Two tests in total as you are allowed to use note card with notes. TAKE HIM IF YOU NEED THIS CLASS
Greatest professor I have ever had. He is always bouncing off walls, even at the crack of dawn in the summer. He was energized and ready to teach. His enthusiasm was truly inspiring and motivating. His excitement for the material to come at the next class meeting was what got me to attend each class. I feel very fortunate for having him.
The greatest educator that I've had the pleasure of learning from.
Joe is awesome. He is very passionate about what he teaches. He makes a 3 hours class go by very fast. He's very entertaining too. When I'm in his class, I want to major in philosophy, but then I quickly lose that desire once I start to read my text book. If I attended class more, I would receive an A
Amazing teacher. I'm rating this teacher to help those who are lazy and hate reading. In his class you have 3 online exams, 4 short essays, and weekly online quizzes. The answers to any of these come directly from the notes. Really easy teacher. You have to kind of read The book for the essays. Funny guy who keeps you interested in a 3 hour class.
The best professor (or teacher!) I've ever had. Smart but not smug, kind but not a pushover. He makes me want to be a better person, which is pretty much the definition of what an ethics professor should be. A+
Joe is such an amazing teacher. He is super entertaining and funny. He writes his notes on the board in chalk, they're always laid out in a beautiful and logical way. He is also really polite and nice to all the students in the class and answers questions really well. I was going to take him for another class next semester but I couldn't fit it in.
Imagine winning the lottery in life. Taking Kirkland is winning the lottery in life. His lectures are amazing and you will never get bored. He sounds like Bill Nye with the same tone and everything. His lectures are very funny as well. What else do you want me to say? SIGN UP BEFORE ITS TOO LATE
His enamor with the subject radiates through his lectures. Taking this class was not only intriguing but also thought provoking. I recommend to anyone, especially the skeptics of philosophy.
Professor Kirkland is a very skilled lecturer and very qualified. HIs PHI 1050 class was easy and the textbook is written very well. His first couple classes may go easy, but lectures do get somewhat dry as his class is him lecturing the entire time. The class would be absolutely dreadful if it were anyone else but him. Explains content very well.
He is an amazing teacher and a very confident speaker. He speaks in a very poetic way which is understandable and he's also a very nice person too, goes above and beyond for students. Replies to emails quickly too. Best teacher I have had at wayne state.I wish my major classes had teaches like him who are so passionate about their field.
Took this professor and man he makes class fun, very energetic, funny jokes. Def would take again if I needed more philosophy!
All you have to do is take the notes that he puts on the board and the quizzes online are word-for-word what he writes on the board. The online exams come from those quiz questions. Kirkland makes the class entertaining. Not hard to get an A.
Professor Kirkland is a great teacher and lawyer. He lectures in class and then gives you online quizzes and the midterm and final are online as well. There are some homework assignments, but nothing too difficult. Just do the reading and take notes and you should pass!
If he weren't so charming, I would sleep through class
Forget any other professor, just go with my man kirkland. Pound for pound the best the teacher I have ever taken! Super Funny guy, keeps the class entertaining even at 8 am! Two exams, which are basically the weekly quizzes compiled together. Take thorough notes of everything and especially of things he repeats! there is also 4, 1-2 page essays.
Far by the best philosophy teacher at Wayne State/ one of the best teachers. If you want to learn, do good and want to get a great grade, take it with Kirkland! You can trust this rating since I took this class in Fall 2017.
very easy professor, theres weekly quizzes of 10 questions that if you just go to lecture, you will pass. Only 2 online exams basically have all the same questions from the quizzes. 4 short essays that he grades very easy. He is very caring and tries to make lecture fun. would definitely take him for any other class. He wants all to pass, great guy
Dr. Kirkland was very professional. With teaching and his presence. The way he taught the course was very efficient, delivering the knowledge at the best of its ability. I hope I can take a future course with Dr. K in the future, as I learned very much from him. Information about course was very well presented and delivered.
BEST PROF OF THE YEAR. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Knows his stuff and shares different perspectives when teaching. Very passionate and charming too. The tags I selected say a lot. Be sure to attend class. The quizzes/tests are easy and some of the answers are in the notes he writes on the board. Professor Kirkland: You're doing amazing, sweetie! <3
He's hands down the best professor ever! He's so nice and extremely funny. I loved his class and it has taught me a lot. Its very easy to get a good grade in his class and I would recommend him 100%, also hes very cute ;).
Prof. Kirkland is truly one of a kind, not just professor, but human being too. He is completely nurturing, committed, patient, and so articulate. I loved attending his lectures, and listening to him talk about ethics and philosophy the way he does was a wonderful experience in itself. I 1000% recommend him, please do yourself a favor and sign up!!
Many reasons to take Kirkland besides his good looks (that's 1 *heart eyes emoji*). Here's the tea: very caring, approachable, friendly, kind, and motivating. Simply his presence puts u in a good mood. The only class I looked forward to this semester. Bc of him, I have become interested in philosophy and would not mind taking more classes with him.
I truly have never met a professor I loved more then him. He's so cute and adorable and is beyond hilarious. As for his class, its such a interesting class and A is a sure think if you take notes and read the actual book. You will enjoy the class <3!
He's not like other professors. Never in all my years of college have I met such a beautiful human being, inside and outside. He's so patient and caring and makes the dreadful experience of coming to class less painful and more enjoyable and entertaining. Want to take an easy class? Take him! His good looks are a bonus. ;) And that's the tea!
I've had Kirkland in ethics+this class. So kind, caring, funny, and charming UwU. Lectures are awesome and he's an awesome person when you talk to him individually. Class is easy and he's super helpful. Having him for 2 semesters in a row positively impacted my life. I'm super thankful for him <3. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
Absolutely enthralling, as a psych and philosophy major, I just want to pick his brain and hear everything he has to say. I highly recommend taking his class and I intend to take more classes with him in the future. Was so happy to have chosen his class this semester. Can't help but smile and laugh, he's a joy.
Wow!!! He's the best professor ever! Never in 2 years have I came across a better professor. He actually wants us to do well. Super easy class! Def take!! He's nice, funny affff, and also cute af!
Kirkland does a great job at integrating philosophy into the real world. He made philosophy interesting. I looked forward to his lectures because he had the whole class laughing each time. The mid term and final were online and there were chapter quizzes in class that are 10 questions. Very easy class if you put a small amount of time in.
He's sometimes strange but a very funny guy overall. Gives great lectures! Very easy weekly quizzes, midterm and final are slightly harder. 4 short essays you can choose the prompt for. Easy class to get a B, put in some effort and get an A.
Professor Kirkland is the best professor I have ever had at Wayne State. He truly is so so so caring and kind and he honestly just wants you to learn. His lectures are so interesting and cool and he really knows what he is talking about. I really loved this professor and I am sure my whole class did. Quizzes are online even though it's in-class.
He is AWESOME! His lectures are the best Ive ever been to. He tries to crack jokes and make the lectures bearable while also being very professional. He doesn't require a lot of homework and the quizzes/exams are easy,he makes sure you understand everything he is expecting. By far one of the best professors Ive ever had!!
Kirkland has been by far my most favorited prof since starting at WSU. There was never a dull lecture. He made sure to go over expectations for reading/homework at the beginning of each lecture. Quizzes and exams were online and very straight forward. If you pay attention in lectures and did the readings, you will pass with a good grade. 10/10!!
Prof Kirkland is funny and passionate about philosophy. Sometimes you wouldn't even be paying attention and you would catch yourself still remembering things he would say when taking a quiz. He was a bit disorganized but he knew how to teach!
Funny lectures. He explains things so clearly. He draws everything out to understand, uses videos, and tells stories to connect to the lecture. I did not really use the books that much. They were kind of hard to understand. He does not require much from us, just a few online quizzes, a short paper, midterm, and final.
Awesome guy, ive never met someone so passionate about their teaching. This class was a bit disorganized but the content in there was made very entertaining and easy to understand by Kirkland. I would take this Prof again a hundred times over, register for him if u get the chance!
OMGGGGG litteraly the bestttttt proffessor ive ever had in my life!! soooo passoniate about teaching. ive taken phi classes before this one and hated my life but he made me LOVEEEE it!!!! if hes open, no matter what time TAKE HIMMMMMMM. wont regret it and always an easy A
As everyone knows Winter 2020 semesters had to go online and Professor Kirkland really made the transition easy and offered so many resources. He was awesome in class lectures, pretty funny and obviously super knowledgable and excited about class content. Take his class if you actually want to learn about philosophy and not be bored :)
He is super nice and intelligent, but he talks so fast and rambles a lot so it can be hard to follow him. I would not take this class if it is your first philosophy class because it does take a lot to follow him. Besides that, when we had to switch to online, he was super caring and understanding. He is a wonderful human and you should experienceit
He is really nice and caring. He gives 2 exams but one got waived for us due to covid-19. 3 essays and quizzes each week. This class was a breeze. I loved his lectures, you will never got bored and his good looks helps you to not loose your attention. he is a very intellectual and kind. if possible I would take him every semester.
Professor Kirkland is an amazing professor. His lectures and classes are very easy to follow and the quizzes/exams are not difficult as well. The only thing I would say is to read the book but he teaches very well and his hilarious. He makes Philosophy fun and there is no other professor I would recommend to someone trying to get into Philosophy.
That was my second time taking classes with him. I JUST LOVE THE WAY HE TEACH Very easy to follow throughout the semester n the quizzes, finals, are not hard at all just read the chapters n you will passed w A+. Plus he grade papers very easily. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR TO ANYONE THAT LOOKING FOR EASY AND FUN CLASS!
Professor Kirkland is so kind and wonderful. He always reaches out and stays in contact. His class is super interesting and fun and I feel as long as you read and really try and understand it youre guaranteed a great grade. A wonderful person all around
As long as you read the short modules he posts weekly, you will get an A. He is very accessible and if you have any issues you can easily contact him. There are not too many assignments in his class overall. There are weekly discussions and 10 question quizzes and 3 10 point essays over 16 weeks. He is very respectful and cares for his students.
Great Professor! Super kind and understanding about the difficulties of an online semester. In addition to the relatively straightforward classwork, the content covered is really interesting while still easy to understand. His class was my favorite this semester!
Professor Kirkland is the best professor and a respectful professor. He responds fairly quick. His class is very organized. He made you feel welcomed and made the class enjoyable. All of his discussions are pretty easy, so it's impossible to lose points. You could rent all of the books through Amazon. Take him. You won't regret it.
One of the most understanding and down to earth professors Ive taken. Class discussions were really straight forward, easy, and interesting! The class was very organized and as long as you did the work youll get an A.
Such an understanding professor. Do the readings and you'll get an A. I wasn't a fan of philosophy prior to this class, but Prof Kirkland helped me find my hidden interest. I felt inspired to do my best work each week, due to his positive attitude. If he is an option, take him!!
Prof Kirkland was going through some personal issues so it was very hard to reach him this semester; however, his class was not difficult. He is a sweet person and an easy grader. You have weekly quizzes, a few discussion boards, and two essays (ethical case studies) for the whole semester. Quizzes can be a bit confusing at first, but doable.
Hi, Professor Kirkland is a very nice man, but he doesn't do anything that regards to the course. His TA's do all the grading. Professor Kirkland used to send out a weekly announcement about the weekly module, but now he doesn't remember to post our scheduled discussion boards. He also never answers emails, like EVER, so don't expect a reply.
Overrated. I do feel bad for him since he was battling some health issues during the semester but him and his TA's were non existent. Didn't reply to emails, didn't grade on time. There is not a lot of work in this class which is a plus. The only thing that takes a long time are the 2 case studies which I guarantee he doesn't even read.
This class was an easy A. He was experiencing some health issues this semester, so some assignments ended up being waived. If you want a challenging class, then maybe this isn't for you. However, the material itself can be a lot to take in. Overall, Kirkland is an amazing guy, he will help you get to where you want to be. Just read the materials.
Easier than it would typically be because the poor guy was dealing with health issues :( I have to say that this is the first time I have ever seen a professor take accountability and communicate well when they are struggling with something and I highly respect it and really appreciate it!
Easiest class at Wayne., took the online version since professor was dealing with some personal health issues. Not challenging.
So he had a medical emergency during the semester I took him and he passed everyone with an A. Regardless his assignments were really easy! I did the work anyway cause it was a discussion and quiz based on the reading for that week! Very easy elective, but this guy doesn't answer any emails and sends an announcement once a decade so GOOD LUCK!
He is impossible to get ahold of. He is regularly a no-show to office hours and does not respond to emails. Quizzes are often uploaded incorrectly and are rescheduled without notice. He rescheduled a quiz to the same day as our final. I feel bad for the guy because of his health issues, but I would not recommend his classes at this time.
He was MIA almost the entire semester, then crashed out about the election and stopped posting all assignments. The discussions and quizzes never have questions, and when you email him, he never responds. Wanted to like this class, but there wasn't anything to like since nothing was being taught. Easy A, but I wanted to learn what I paid for.
Would not recommend. Though kind, he overtly asserted his political bias over the class through shocking remarks in the announcements, went MIA, waived every assignment after failing to post material for weeks, then by the end of the semester accused the class of academic dishonesty. Wanted to enjoy the course but paid for a nightmare of a course.
Kirkland is a great professor, but was dealing with health issues this semester. Assignments were sometimes waived, making it an easy A. Use study tools like unstuck study to stay on top of the material, which can be dense.
