Best Math Teacher I have ever had. Tough but fair grader. Fun Environtment
Awesome Teacher. Best Math teacher I have ever had.
Good Teacher. Fair Grader. Tells stories, and keeps class fun.
An excellent teacher. Very considerate of student's needs.
Great, fun teacher. Lots of hw (gets graded), need to do it to keep up.Take him!
hands down best math teacher at Marist, funny guy, very smart

best math teacher ive ever had, very helpful, a really funny guy
this man is the reason im a math major
Fun and very helpful...keeps class entertaining but still gets the work done.
Great teacher! Makes the math easy to understand & fair grader but alot of work
Great teacher, very clear and keeps class stress free. A little moody though.
class is decent, but assigns too much HW, cool guy but can be moody
Fun, easy class. Lot of homework but easy with attendance and tests
extremely rough grader...if he doesn't like you u'll know, easy with attendance
Class is a breeze, Kirtland is the man. I failed stats in high school and i have an A now in his class. Really helps you learn.
wow what a nice guy granted that i am only half way through the semester but first impression is great easy grader
Honestly ... Worst test grader ever... not clear at all and takes off points for the stupidest things...my avg in stats = D my average in all other subjects = A- ... Dont take Kirtland for stats unless you wanna lower your GPA...
he likes grateful dead hes cool with me :)
he's the greatest teacher and soooo much fun... he really teaches too... it actually makes me want to take math again
I am horrible in math, but I did well in his class. He is a really good teacher and is always there if you need extra help. He also makes class fun, which I thought was impossible in a math class.
great teacher. alot of homework but if you do it you will do well in his class.
If you are an athlete or cool in any way get out of this class. I think this guy got beat up by some football players in college and is still holding a grudge. Made snide comments when I seeked help because I was a football player.
Gives lots of homework but they are benefical esp for exams. Makes class fun by interacting with the students but sometimes tries a little hard to be funny. Does good job of explaining material. Very helpful.
Probably the best math teacher I've ever had. I'd never understood math until I took his class. Everyone should take him for math!
i had him for two semesters and i learned an amazing amount from him. Do the homework and youllbe fine because he makes it the concepts very clear. He inspired me to go into math education....Youll love being in his class!
The only math class I have ever understood anything in. Lots of hw but if you do it then you're fine in the class. If you have to take stats, take him.
Math comes easy to me, so I may be generous with my rating of Dr. K. I thought he was a great teacher, but sometimes he seems like a high school teacher (DON'T TALK OR EVEN WHISPER IN CLASS!) Funny, and cool. It must be difficult to make Calc fun.
I failed calculus in high school, but I have an A now. No, he's not an easy teacher, but he's extremely clear and does not hesitate to stop and help you understand before he goes on. He'll teach you. (And he's a Red Sox fan.)
Dr. K's awesome! Always been awful Math, but got great grades from him. He's very clear and takes time to make sure you understand everything. If you don't get it-ASK HIM, he'll walk you thru it. Pay attention, do your homework, you'll be fine. He's more concerned with what U learn.
Good guy, great teacher, always willing to help, quizzes are very fair, treats you as indivduals and likes to learn about u
Fun cool professor
This is the best math teacher you will ever take, he makes things very clear, he is funny, make sure you do the homework and you will do fine in class! He is the reason I became a Math Major!
GREAT TEACHER!
Nice guy. Goes REALLY slow so the class is easy. Not the best teacher I ever had, but a good one. I think that he should move a little faster sometimes, and he stops alot and wastes time when he should be going over harder stuff. His tests are ALWAYS easy as cake though. Just do the examples.
Put aside the fact that he is a Red Sox fan... he is a great teacher and so thorough... He is always willing to give you extra help. Expect a lot of work and he grades each homework assignment and they mean a lot to your grade so work your butt off!
Kirkland makes analysis of the fundamental theorem of calculus cool!
This profes is awesome! really clear and not to easy and not to hard.
For a person who hates math, this was a decent class. Nice guy, explains things clearly and takes time to review things with you if you don't understand. only down side is he gives lots of homework, but the homework helps a lot. if you hate math, take this class.
I've had him for two of my math classes, Calc 3 and Math Reasoning. He's the best teacher here at Marist. Very helpful and fair. Take him!!!
I've had kirtland for calc I, calc III, & math reasoning and he is by far the best teacher at marist college!!! he makes the material easy to understand, hes so so so helpful, makes jokes during class to make things less boring, and is an overall nice guy. Anyone, math major or not should take him!!
definately take Dr Kirtland for Stats if you can. There is a lot of HW and 3 tests and a final (all of which he grades very picky). However, he is a great teacher! He explains the concepts of stats very well, and always encourages you to stop by his office for help. Doing the homeworks will also help you cause they boost your grade.
Kirtland is the man. His tests are fair, gives graded homework assignments every week. Very willing to help you, he's a funny guy and makes a math class as interesting and as entertaining as a math class could be.
Dont take this him if you have trouble with math. He doesnt care if you are struggling, you just have to understand it. I mean you could probably pass if you have no life and are not taking any other classes besides that one, so good luck. I have to say though he is a really nice guy besides that.
Really nice and funny guy. The class is a bit rough, but he makes it as clear as possible. Gotta study for the tests! Also the final project really sucks so def. go to him for help a lot if you have trouble. It's passable if you have an idea of what you are doing!
Dr. K is so awesome. Tests are fairly easy, and homeworks are simple if you understand. And if you dont, you ask for help and then its simple.
This professor is the best professor I have ever had for mathematics. You are a fool not to take him if you need a math class.
Excellent math teacher. He always encourages office hours and is very willing to help you. He makes math as interesting as possible. If you need a math, I highly recommend him.
You must be an idiot to think this guy is bad. he's hilarious and makes math fun... i know that sounds corny but its true.
Best math professor at Marist, really makes the material clear and easy. Also funny, so class isnt boring. Tests need to be studied for. Group project is a pain, but he is very helpful with it. Not too bad to look at either! Would recommend!
Professor Kirtland is one of the nicest teachers I've had at Marist. Cryptography is a new class & he made it extremely interesting and easy to understand. I would recommend this course to anyone in the Honors program looking to fill a math core req or just with a slight interest. Grade = group presentations, a test, and homework.
Prof. Kirtland is really cool and he makes math fun. I used to hate math but now I'm in the Math Club with him!
Prof. Kirtland is by far the best teacher I've ever had, ever since Pre-K. He has opened up new doors that I never knew could possible. Even if you don't like math, I highly recommend this class. You'll be surprised at what a extreme pleasure you'll have just by stepping through the classroom door. Such a genius teacher, and very likable man!
Makes learning Calculus so much easier. Provides examples and homework that allow you to practice and really get a hold of the material. So helpful in office hours. The passion he has for math really comes through in his teaching. Take him as often as you can, and you'll really enjoy math more than ever before.
Kirtland is a genuinely good guy and knows a lot more than he gives himself credit for. He's also one of the rare math professors who can teach and not just read out of the book. However, he handcuffs you with a lot of homework which is graded (problem-by-problem) and counts it as a large portion of your grade. Tests are very fair. Work hard!!!
Joe Kirtland has a vast understanding of calculus. He is very good at helping out on problems during office hours. However, he does give a lot of homework that take a while to do. Overall, very nice respectable professor that is enthusiastic in class.
Way too much homework, very tough grader, do not recommend.
Professor Kirtland is one of my favorite professor at Marist. He is such a dedicated professor and he strives to help all of his students to the best of his abiltiy. He does give A LOT of homework and his test are fair. Def recommend taking this class.
Basically a useless professor and assumes you know all of the material not only beforehand, but to the level of an expert. Do not take stats with him, he will ruin your life.
If you are not a math person like I am, be ready to put a lot of your time and effort into this course. I worked harder than ever before and just barely got a B-. You have to know the material cold in order to do well on the tests. He is the best math teacher I've ever had in my entire years of schooling.
Kirtland is extremely helpful. Always available when you need him, but he is an extremely hard grader and his tests are pretty hard. He loves to take off point.
Dr. Kirtland is the best math teacher I have ever had. He explains everything in detail and makes sure to answer all questions. The homework is time consuming, but worth it. He is really nice and funny and makes the class bearable despite the boring subject.
Don't take him! He goes over materials way too fast and half of the students can't even keep up and he doesn't care whether you pass or fail. He gets pleasure for taking points off on exams and hw. His homeworks are nothing like what he taught in class. If I were you I would avoid his class. Also he never reviews a material before an exam.
Great teacher! I've had him 3 semesters. Sometimes goes through material quickly but is always willing to help, he usually has extra help almost everyday. Homework can be a little much but if you start it early and ask him for questions, it's not that overwhelming. Put in the effort and you'll be fine.
This guy is the greatest professor in the world. 1010 would fail class just to take him again.
My favorite math professor! His notes are so helpful and his lectures make sense. Tell you exactly what to expect and he makes class interesting because he is so funny. You can tell he has a passion for what he teaches. Def take him for ANY math class.
My Favorite Professor by far. He is awesome--TAKE HIM! Tough grader and a lot of homework, but it helps bc Calc is not so easy. Always there for help whenever, even if it doesn't say he has hours then, but he's so helpful. He really cares and he tries so hard to make the class interesting, & he does. BEST class; he's so funny!!! Would take again!!!
A fantastic teacher. He truly cares about his students and wants everyone to earn as much as possible.
Kirtland is my favorite math teacher by far. He is funny, assigns one piece of homework per week and is available very often for extra help. Calculus is not an easy class, it is on YOU to do the work. His lectures are informative and if you put in the work outside of class, you will have no issue. He also lets students shoot the chalk into th trash
Lets get right to the stuff you need to know, shall we? 1) Moves very fast 2) No review before exams (including the Final), he expects you to come in with questions for him, not the other way around. 3) Not much required hw, but there is a lot of "optional hw"; Exams are almost straight from required and optional hw 4) REVIEW ALGEBRA, please
Very similar to discrete mathematics, if you've taken that before. Nothing will be found on Chegg and he is very specific about how you word things. Use the textbook as a guide on how to write the proofs and you should be okay. Overall, he is an amazing man who made writing about even integers fun.
Dr. Kirtland is such a great professor! You will have to put a lot of work into his class but it is manageable. He made stats very interesting and clearly explained every topic. He offers a lot of office hours and gives helpful feedback on assignments. Do all of the non-graded hw assignments, they are helpful when it comes to quizzes!
here's a brief rundown: had PDFs of the lecture notes and "non-graded homework," on the class site, so no worries on that, doesn't assign readings to the textbook, but USE IT FOR HOMEWORK (helped me tremendously), will give one homework a week except for the 2 exam weeks and will let class decide which day is best, super nice and sense of humor.
Honestly one of the best professor's I have. He does give homework, but if you have questions he is always willing to help during office hours. Very friendly as well and interacts with the class. Also, not afraid to admit when he makes a mistake and you are allowed a cheat sheet for test.
Dr. Kirtland is amazing. His lectures are great and his humor made me never want to miss class. Homeworks are simple, only 1 a week, and he provides his lecture notes to you. The 3 tests are easy and you can bring a cheat sheet. I'm so happy I was able to get him as my first math professor in college. I'd take him for every math class if I could.
Great professor with an amazing introduction to stats. Goes the extra mile, designing a course that shows students the importance of what they're learning. One graded HW each week. Exams are easy if you do all the graded and non-graded HW. He also singlehandedly makes every class fun and interesting. Very enthusiastic about math. Great experience.
Kirtland was amazing. Catches you very off guard with his humor and generally makes stats not as boring as you would think. Do the non-graded and graded HWs and you'll ace the tests. He does grade a little picky though but go to office hours with questions.
do all of the graded and non-graded homeworks and you will be fine for the exams, he is a tough grader but the homeworks really help you prepare
Kirtland has a very strategic lesson plan that is concise and easy to follow. But do the homework, because that is what he models his test off of. Overall a good professor, kind of quirky but caring, and is accessible outside of the classroom, go to his office hours too if you feel you are struggling.
Kirtland is a great professor for stats. 1 graded HW per week which is based off the non-graded HWs. Do both and you'll ace the tests. He doesn't make stats as boring as you would think, his humor will catch you very off-guard. Definitely take him if you can.
Brings a lot of character to the classroom, math/stats aren't the most interesting topic but he does his best with it and it's more engaging than your typical math class/teacher. Tests are tough but fair, and you are allowed to have a flashcard to have some notes on during those tests.
great teacher
He takes off points for the littlest things especially interpretations when the wording is not exactly how he wants it but the answer is correct. He also would take off points on my homework that I did with him which makes no sense because he approves it during office hours but then takes off points when he grades it.
Kirtland was a great professor and made lectures tolerable through his humor. He's a bit strict with the way he grades the homework assignments but as long as you're paying attention in class you'll learn how he expects things to be phrased. Tests are fair and are based off the graded and non-graded homework which helped me prepare.
Dr. Kirtland is a great guy, but his class can be challenging. He goes very fast, making it hard to understand the material thoroughly, but he is willing to help when needed and very accommodating. If you enjoy math, then this class will likely be easy, but it won't be easy if you don't enjoy math.
I am super bad at math and will fully say my poor grade in this class had nothing to do with Professor Kirtland. He's a super cool guy and I really liked him. He has no attendance policy but I would definitely recommend still going to class because the content is difficult.
He is a great guy, has a lot of office hours, but the content is very difficult and he tends to move very quickly in class. There is very little graded homework, but there is A LOT of "optional" homework. Tests were very difficult and does not curve anything regardless of the class grades. Tests are worth 70%, final (cumulative) 25%, HW 5%.
Marist is extremely lucky to have a professor like Dr. Kirtland. I have never felt confident in my math abilities until I took his class. His lectures are so straightforward and understandable. He focuses on the core components of Calculus and includes no extraneous content on exams. He is reasonable and easily the best math teacher I've ever had.
Dr. Kirtland is amazing. I had him for Statistics and now I took him again for Calculus. My low grade is NOT because of him. I am terrible at math and if I didn't have him for Calc, I would have failed the class. He is very understanding when you're struggling and is happy to help you during his office hours. I will miss having classes with him.
Dr. Kirtland is the GOAT. I had him for MATH 210 and 310 and he is also my advisor. He cares about his students and is always available in his office. He is my favorite professor at Marist and I am so lucky to learn from such a respected and caring professor as a math major. His tests are fair if you prepare. Take him if you have the chance!
Amazing professor. He's super nice and really cares. If you're going to take stats, take his class. The weekly graded homeworks are pretty short and if you keep up on the non graded homework then the tests will be easier. Doesn't take attendance. Stats is definitely really hard but he helps a lot
Kirtland is the man. He knows how to explain things so they make SENSE. In both lower level and high level math classes (Calculus, Abstract Algebra), he is well known to be one of the best professors at Marist!! Students love Kirtland, and he also is open to changing due dates and exam dates for the class depending on breaks, other exams, etc.
Really really cares about students, use office hours!!!
Kirtland is awesome, I loved his lectures, he is a really funny guy. A lot of our class struggled with the proofs, myself included. But, he gave us extra chances to succeed. Unfortunately my priorities were placed elsewhere, and I never had to chance to fully understand the end of the material, so I did poorly on the final. Maybe I'll retake.
lectures pretty fast
Prof. Kirtland makes even abstract math engaging. His classes are challenging but fair if you prepare thoroughly, using the textbook and resources like unstuckstudy. Attend lectures and stay focused - you'll learn a lot.
Good class and professor. I just don't love the subject.
Great professor, super funny, and he knows what he is talking about. You can have a one-sided index card for the exams during the semester, and a one-sided sheet of paper for the final exam. Lowest 4 homework grades are dropped. He does lecture very fast. I personally had a very busy semester so I couldn't go for extra help as much as I wanted.
Professor Kirtland is an incredibly caring professor who can make anybody passionate about the subject. My bad grade has everything to do with me and nothing with him. If you need help, seek it and he will help you. Do the optional homework!
Save yourself—don't take his stats class! Lectures are confusing, tests are based on ungraded work he never explains, and he expects you to teach yourself. Only one HW a week, but exams are brutal. Office hours were okay, but if you struggle with math, this professor will not help you succeed.
Great professor! Only one graded homework a week with optional work included for extra practice. Attendance not mandatory but highly recommended. Entertaining professor who loves to talk about his daughter. Always available for office hours. Some exam questions were hard, but as long as you do the optional work on top of the graded you'll be fine.
Very nice only gives hw once a week. Interactive and funny.
Literally Kramer from Seinfeld. Definitely an interesting guy. I don't even like math, and he made the class fun. One homework a week, with tests/quizzes. Very patient and understanding when explaining things, you can tell he's passionate about math, and his interests WILL continuously appear throughout the class. Overall, a kinda frantic dude.
I've had Dr. Kirtland for reasoning, abstract, and geometry and he has been a great professor! He always did his best to make a way for us to understand. I always appreciated how he took the time to understand our thought processes, even if we were objectively incorrect. He definitely has a creative way of understanding and delivering material!
Dr. Kirtland is one of the best professors at Marist. I have had him for many math courses this point and I have learned so much from him. Geometry wasn't easy but it was doable. Tests were open book (not open note) and the final was take home. The exams weren't easy but he is always available to help you and wants you to do well! He's the best!
