HE IS A GREAT PROF and teaches an excellent course!

very straightforward lectures, good course load, great course!
speaks WAY too quickly. Work load was minimal.
He's a great professor, he just talks to fast
Very helpful and his exams were straightforward
Take Film, TV and Society. It's easy if you can write a half-decent essay.
great class...i got an A
He'll gladly help anyone get an A if they show effort
He love his film noir. But so do I. Very interesting prof. excellent syllabus
Awesome classes, great visual examples used. Nice Man.
just watched movies, workload as light as it can get, helps u out when approach
Knows his stuff. Loves movies. Prepare to watch them...
Nice man, very understanding when I was sick. LOVES his movies
THis was the easiest and one of the more interesting classes i've taken here at York. He is a really great guy. Classes are clear and to the point. Go to lecture, do the readings (which are small and interesting) and you'll do great on the exams.

fun class. interesting movies. nice prof. assignments are straight forward.
Very interesting class, very clear prof, very short and easy to understand readings, and interesting films.
Prof. is very interesting. Knows his stuff in many areas-besides Film.

Great prof. and i LOVE his tests...a must take for anyone who aspires for an EEEEEASSSYYYYY B!
He knows tons of info on film. It is obvious that he is very passionate about his subject which causes students to feel the same way. At times lecture can be slow, but overall a great prof.
Hell of a guy. Happy to loan his car on occasion. (Car's a little ****ty).
great prof! great movies! great readings! best class to take at york. he is very flexible and understanding.
Great Guy, Great teacher
most laid back man ever..EASY exams..cool guy and funny at time
Great lectures and format of the course. Best summer class I ever had.
Awesome class! Awesome and passionate prof! Great atmosphere for a summer course. Assignments are easy enough as in the exam. Readings are demanding and boring, but films are interesting. I strongly recommend this class.
he's okay
omgzzz - he's SO HOT!!!!
Good Everything
Provides interesting analysis of films shown, though sometimes choice of actual films is quite random. Easy-going atmosphere, however too many technical glitches so far causing classes to be cancelled.
He's ok, but he marks reakky hard
Well...if you take this course in the summer as I did, it is fairly intensive, four days a week, three hours. However, the films are interesting and Kovacs' analysis is excellent. The assignments are reasonable too. No real stress in this course, as long as you do your part. Recommended.
This guy's laziness is pathetic. He doesn't deserve to be a prof here. His lectures are dispassionate, he reads straight from the bk, his marking is arbitrary, he simply doesnt care. I hate knowing that I paid to attend a class where this guy f's off and doesnt care about his students.
Incredibly lazy with no real passion. I'm pretty sure he randomly picks movies and TV show episodes out of her personal collection and brings them in to watch for himself. Tough marker with no consistency in what he's looking for. Also, his beard is usually uneven.
He's not a bad prof although you gotta listen pretty carefully to things he says outside he's power point. At first the course looks and sounds easy but he's a really hard marker, so be ready. You never really know what he's looking for on the exams, so you never know what you did wrong.
scarred me for life. 2 years later i still cant believe how bad he is. lectures lack passion, marking lacks consistency, movies lack interest. a complete snob. he covered for prof mccullough (so much better) for 1 class this year, and the arrogance was unbelievable. and he was only there 5 minutes!
REAL hard marker & no consistency, exams are short but u have to know too much. His lecturing is good but at times goes too fast& is a **** if u ask him to repeat himself making a snippy remark. He isnt terrible but not the best prof ive had
if you were thinking HEY BIRD COURSE, think again. everyone i knew who took film, tv & soc said it was easy so i took it with him. my 'bird course' is now my crappy course. i don't know if HE marks the exams or TAs but whoeever does, marks extremely hard!
Very difficult, gave very little focus or clarity to course. Avoid this prof, tough marker and does not make course material interesting.
he lazily uses the same powerpoint for lecture year after year & despite their simplicity he expects the great canadian novel on ur exam he marks SO HARD and looks for content not even thoroughly discussed.takeit for an easy 6creds but dont expect an A. i could teach this stupid course its a joke
joe was a great teacher. he has an interesting perspective on the films & was able to relate the material to the present day. graders can be hard, but honestly, if you know the themes, and actually put some thought behind your writing, it's not bad. not a bird-course, unless you're happy with a c.
Um...This class sucks! Any friend who tells you this class is good is just trying to make you as miserable as they were.He is all surface, boring and if you want to e-mail him think again. It's worth taking this class just to count the "Um's" per lecture. This guy is lame with no passion or personality.Watch for nose flares and arms flailing.
The other film, tv & soc classes are probably easier. I don't know why the other person down there rated his "easiness" as a 4... everyone I knew in that class complained about hard marking. Not just the "stupid" people.

I hate him! I hate him! I hate him! You're really on your own in this course. May GOD be with you!
Stop your belly aching! This prof warned everyone to tie in lectures, readings, AND screenings into the assignments. You were only "on your own" if you didn't do the background work required. I thought the course was great! Soooo glad I took it! I've learned how NOT to be swayed by what I read or see in the media...everyone has an agenda.
it's a really interesting subject but joe's a really difficult marker. BEWARE: the exam is really tough - linking things that aren't even properly explained. he's an okay guy, but not very approachable.
The class comes across as easy on the surface, but it's actually VERY difficult because the marking is ridiculously hard. His lectures are VERY brief and are copied out of the required course book. Do yourself a favour and take another section of this course that's not taught by him, if you don't want to be the victim of a hard marking standard.
Exceptional professor, but a ridiculously tough marker!
His lectures hardly feathered the depth of the subject matter. Not at all an incisive enough prof for an ideologically-charged course.
Exams were marked so hard, never could find out what exactly he was looking for. Even had one come back where I had good mark which was then crossed out and replaced with a poorer one???Too bad because the content was interesting, but no matter how hard I tried, could barely scrape out a C, which threw my average down...
Oh my god!! This prof looks like Grissom from CSI!!! It really is true!!!
It's true.. he does look like Grissom from CSI! Good prof too!
This Professor was clear, interesting, involved and I couldn't stop thinking about him sexually....wow!
oh my god, I am sexually attracted to him too! ANd I thought I was weird! WOw! :) Well, other then that, he is a tough marker (awfully tough), but I like his "I don't give a s*** what you think of me" attitude and yep, the crucial point is that you do learn from him! He's a good lecturer as well!
Tough marker no matter how hard you try won't give you more then B+, but he is an exceptionally good lectrer and a good person to talk to outside class.
he's a great lectuer, very organized, manages to incorporate several issues in one lecture and oh!honey.....i'd let him water my flower anytime
The films viewed in class were usually interesting, yet the required text was confussing. Test questions were quite perdictable (all essay questions though). If you miss any films or tv shows most are found in the library so you wont fall too far behind if you have to miss a class. Overall i would recommend this course.

Fantastic professor. Very clear and interesting, genuine interest in the material makes it easier to grasp. I feel I'm learning a lot from this course.
he's clear when lecturing, always answers questions. easy exam questions, but a little bit of tough marker but fair.
i took his class in the summer, so it was 4 days a wk for 24 days and you watch a movie every day. each exam is one essay Q (which he gives ahead of time), n a research paper at the end. The TA's mark the tests, and A's are rarely givin, so if your looking for one, dont take the class unless ur essays are amazing.Overall its a perfect summer class
His ta's mark the work yet he's the one you go to in order to find out what you need to improve on. When you talk to him, he rarely raises grades, maybe because he's trying to back up his ta's marking?? well anyways, it seems like a pretty easy course but it's not cuz the marking is HARD
HE IS AN AMAZING PROFESSOR, FUNNY, ENTHUSIASTIC.. the course is really interesting.. but his marking sucks! hard marker.. he himself says in the first day of class that he is "stingy with A's"! but B was not an impossible grade to get!
interesting lecturer, tho he can be a bit of a hard ass sometimes. uses minimal slides, so be sure to listen in class and take your own notes. large lecture and no tutorial makes it hard to ask questions sometimes, but he seems approachable enough. exams are reasonable, tho he can be a hard marker.
I liked this class. After the first exam I thought I was going to drop. But for everyone who is going to take it, yes he marks "hard." But after working hard on my first exam and doing horrible I started to just memorize everything from the lecture. All he wants is the info spit back at him, no thinking required. My last three exams were all B+
not that it's important, but it was hilarious! Go figure....LOL...enjoy the course :D
I received 3 marks higher on an exam I thoroughly studied for compared to the one I absolutely did not study for. What I'm trying to say is that the TA's for this course mark very HARD, and unpredictable. Prof also does not post lectures.. I would NOT suggest this course. This course is honestly not as easy as it seems.
Very clear and coherent in his speaking. Precise with words and concepts and doesn't keep students in lecture for longer than they need to be. However, he doesn't always write detailed comments on exams or papers. If you want to improve your mark, speak to him after class.Very approachable - should be no problem to get an A.
The only class in which I attended all lectures. He is so clear and precise, and he knows the material in and out. Read the books, go to lectures, take notes and you will do fine. Extremely professional and helpful and oh boy! he is surely a pleasure to watch, couldnt take my eyes off him for a second.
half the time the class ends over an hour early.
Very clear prof. You'll know what you need to know to do well on the exam. If you don't show up to class, you're probably going to bomb the tests though.
Very cool guy. Interesting lectures, answers your questions, and is straight forward about exams and assignments.
He co-taught this course with S Davidson (so only one of them will grade your stuff, dependent on your last name). 2 tests + 2 assignments. Both pretty much straightforward. You don't have to do all the readings, but as long as you come to class, you should do okay. Attendance = 20%. When I took it, there were no tutorials for this class. Got an A.
This professor and his TA team is total CRAP!The test questions are very vague;he thinks he's trying to be helpful, when he's actually being very rude. His comments are vague and useless. He repeated several times that he does not give out As,which is irritatng to hear considering we,students, paid for this course($1200)and expect to be treated fairly!
You came looking for a bird course, and you found it. A movie every lecture, and the entire grade is 4 tests and attendance.
Lectures about interesting material. Not too boring to listen to. He is terribly rude when approached about anything. Writes next to nothing on his slides, and talks way too fast. If you're looking for a bird course, this is NOT it!
decent professors, cuts right to the chase with the material, does not waste time at all. clear concepts, decent ppt slides. marks hard though. got a B+ for final grade.
He doesent mark the exams, his TA's do. Regardless they ALL mark ridiculously hard and thats because its what the prof wants. DO NOT believe people who say "oh this course is about movies it should be easy" its NOT. Ive noticed that the TA's are more interested in your writing skills rather than the actual course content. STEER CLEAR!!
professor is very clear and makes things very interesting. i would recommend this course and professor to those who are looking for easy general course. exams are not really tough but still requires work. professor himself is nice and extremely helpful...
He is a good teacher but is not helpful at all. He is rude to his students, shows no respect for them, and does not care if you pass his class or not.
Speaks with clarity, incoroporates class participation in every lecture
Very helpful and accommodating professor. Lectures were never dull. Thoroughly enjoyed this course.
This class sucked. Took him for Film Television and American Society but this class was all abotu war and it was so boring i fought to stay awake. Just go watch the movies and spit out whatevrr the book says, you still wont get an A because tutorial is worth 20% so they dont give out A's on exams..boring and useless...not a bird course at all
Very good and interesting lectures. Slides were just a guide you have to attend the lecture. Fair in grading. You earn your mark and I saw no favouritism.
Two profs taught the course but only one of them will mark everything depending on your last name. His lecture notes serve as an outline so u should attend his lectures because he gives more in-depth info. The two tests consisted of 5 definitions and 1 essay(topic given in advance). Fair marker on tests and essays. Presentations were easy marks.
The course is not difficult as we r given options in the exams and essay question is given 1 week before exam. He is a boring professor because he just reads his notes. His part covers 1500 CE which means ancient history is boring compared to the latter part of course. Classes are short in the first half and the course itself is good.
Sometimes the prof can come off as being somewhat rude or impatient. He also says "umm" alot through out lectures which can get a little annoying. However his lectures and powerpoint slides are very short, which is a good thing. Also, his test was very easy. Some people however found that the way he marks for presentations is unfair.
Hate this class, but he's decent professor.
Lecture was straightforward. First half of the class is the lecture (taken STRAIGHT out of HIS own textbook) and the second half of the class would be for viewing related films or shows that were mentioned from his textbook. 4 tests, all essay with choice. Marking depends on TA.
Not helpful at all, he is very rude if you approach him and doesn't answer your questions. Instead, he just tends to ignore you and expects you to answer your own questions. Especially in regards to non-lecture material (i.e. missed tests) he has an attitude problem and is not helpful at all.
Not a bird course at all. Hard grader not an easy A. Deadly boring.
If you know how to write a half-decent essay you should be able to get an A. I found his marking to be fair, and his comments on the tests were helpful. Make sure you read ALL of the readings, not just the textbook he goes through during lectures. Outline for the summer= 4 tests worth 20% each and 1 essay worth 20%. Tests are all essay format.
Great lecturer. But didn't respond to my emails. If you can write essays, this course is for you.
attend the lectures, you will be fine. he is a great prof !! I got an easy B+..
Genuinely nice man, easy going as well. No problems with him. Cheerful as well which helps promote a positive class environment. Bit of a difficult marker, but fair. Don't talk in his class though.
You have to write four essays, not a bird course at all. If you take this course avoid taking it with TA Jan Benes, stupid T.A. I have ever met. Does not respond to emails, not a fair marker.. if your essays aren't identical to what he writes in his book then you automatically get below a C+. If they are idential to the book you still get a C+
This is definitely not a bird course. There are four tests throughout the year and you have to rely heavily on the readings to get a decent mark. I worked really hard and barely ended up with a B+. It all depends on your TA. His lectures are useful and so are the readings. There are a lot of readings though.
This was a cool class! Every class he screened two science fiction films but didn't really lecture so you don't have to go to class if you watch the films on your own. There wasn't a ridiculous amount of readings. Grading breakdown: an essay proposal, 1 essay & a final exam and he gave the questions ahead of time. Prof responds to emails right away
So I just talked to him, because I was sick for an exam and he is extremely rude, and does really just ignore you for some odd reason, if you ask for a makeup test. I had to talk to him about 3 times. Basically this class is based on lectures and essay writing. The marking is very hard, don't recommend if you hate very old films and essays.
Focused more on the history of the world. The summer course may move at a faster pace, so stay on top of the readings - which you should probably do anyways. Also, work at making connections between events and regions/countries. Prof. is cool. Has fun side stories in lectures. Takes time to answer any questions. Fair marker, respectful.
Lots of reading and writing. Interesting lectures. Learned a lot. Good prof
He is very knowledgable about world history and can answer pretty much any question you have, which is pretty impressive. However, it can get a bit boring and the class has a thinly veiled pro communist motive.
he's good and very enlightened!
Incredible Prof. Amazing tone and clarity, and all around a very fair marker. Makes lectures interesting and makes you excited about the course. Very easy talk to during and after class. Can answer every question concisely. Some of the quickest high yield lectures I've ever had...DO NOT MISS THEM. Wish I could have him again.
Prof Kispal Kovacs was a clear prof but lectures was basically a repetition of the reading which is good too. Easy course and easy test questions if you pay attention to the movies watched and do the readings. Most people think this course will count towards GEN-ED HUMA credits but it doesn't
take this in summer! just lecture, no tutorial. He wrote the textbook so he basically just read his piece, showed the movies/ shows and that's it! Tests every two weeks or so, essay question format. Easy A if you keep up/ have some prior film knowledge. Not challenging at all.
Wonderful professor. He has great antonation and his voice clearly carries throughout the entire theatre. You will be watching a film every week, and every 5th week you will be writing a short essay which serves as the test. Super easy course, the films are pretty interesting to watch, and even his lectures are fun to listen to! Take it!
Such a sweet & adorable guy! I always looked forward to going to his lectures (even though it is a regurgitation of the textbook). I took this in summer school - 4 tests total. He is a decent marker & kind of a mumbler. Overall, recommend this class. His jolly attitude rubs off on ya :)
Course content is great! The films shown are tied to the then current events in US. I must say I've been more critical of the films (old and new) and more aware of their context after this course. The professor comes off a little standoffish at times but was helpful nevertheless.
Nice guy and somewhat easy class. Fair tests. Take this course! :)
This course is an enjoyable course. The movies were a bit dated and were a bit positioned towards what males would tend to enjoy. The tests were easy to study for if you took detailed notes. TA's can screw your mark as domes expectations were different than others. Course material wasn't difficult and his textbook was an actual joy to read!
Amazing prof!
He was an okay proff. His voice was kind of monotonous. However this course and lecture were very interesting, for me anyways. He is also highly knowledgable. Kind of a tough marker for essays. I wouldn't say it's easy to get a A in this course, unless you are a phenomenal essay writer
The Proff is really helpful and the class is super easy. I read before coming to lecture too. However if you have a horrible TA, you are screwed for the whole year. Don't ever go into Dragon's class, he failed almost the whole class then scream at you and call you out. He is the most useless TA I have ever had. Good luck.
Take this course in the summer!! Its amazing, test every week or 2, but you get 6 credits in just 6 weeks. He's clear in lectures, and as long as you pay attention to the points he presses about the movies, you will do well on the essays.
He is a very nice and good professor. There were a total of 2 essays, 3 group presentations, 1 mid term, and 1 final. Please note: for presentations they're timed 15 minutes and he is looking for you to get straight to the point. He does not care for sugar coated presentations and anything irrelevant when presenting since he doesn't specify it!
Basically you have 4 test in the year and they are all in class essays. He starts off every class with a mini lesson ( which is usually word for word from the text book he wrote) then he plays the movie for the day. . Also tests are EASY if you do the readings / readings are also easy. Overall 10/10 best class ive ever taken at York.
Excellent prof, lot's of knowledge about the study of film and television. This course made me think critically on the role of society and its impact on television and movies. Lectures were entertaining, 4 tests in the whole year where you select one essay question out of 3 options, highly recommend for an elective!
Took this course last year with Aaron as my TA - loved it. The prof however was extremely bland. His lectures consisted of him reading his notes/the tb word for word. Probably doesn't post his slides bc he knows that there would be 0 value in coming to his lectures if he did lol. Tutorials were fun and engaging and made it worth it though!
Professor Joe was the absolute worst Prof I've ever seen. He doesn't respond back to emails in a timely fashion and when he does respond it isn't formal. He gave us major papers to write in a short amount of time & had a fit when people asked him for an extension. I've taken this class online not sure how it would be in class but this class sucks!
She assigned us a 3000 word essay worth 50% of our grade, gave us 2 weeks to work on it. I spent the first week that this was assigned in the hospital due to mental health reasons. I asked an extra day due to my lack of access towards a computer. Her response: "In the hopes of avoiding more of your sob stories, I am granting a 4-day extension"
No feedback for individual students essays or tests. The professor just sent an email to everybody to generally give a conclusion. No video or audio preparation for all lectures for online learning. Only provides slides for a few courses at the beginning of the semester and delete access to e-class right after the semester ends.
The class only has 2 Essays, 2 presentations, 2 quizzes and tutorial attendance/participation. So not really a lot of work over all. If you go to the lecture you don't needed to do the readings and if you don't you will if you want to do well on the quizzes. The quizzes are only 20% of the grade total though so you could just bomb and still pass.
Simple lectures, you always leave early. Easy assignments, and extremely supportive. Would take every year if I could !!
I don't remember the course code but I took crime in film with Joe and this was the BEST experience I have had at York. I ate chips and the whole class watched movies from the 30s and 40s and he was kind to everyone and funny and the tests and essays were so fun and almost easy.
