He requires a crappy book he wrote for the class and charges $30 for it.
He's mean, he's a hypocrite, and if you don't agree with him, you won't do well
Although he can be a bear to students that do not argue logically; he is willing to listen to any students point of view. He also tries to push all of his students out of their comfort zone (one of the purposes of Philosophy) to reevaluate their beliefs
Some might say he's a mean @$$hole, but I think he does a great job at getting discussion going in class. He grades kind of tough on papers, but if you understand the material and ask intelligent questions, you'll do just fine! PS Go to class!
I think that Kupfer is a great professor, thus my taking more than one course from him. He is witty, personal, and very intelligent. Very well versed. Take the opportunity to have him for a class, you'll be challenged and will be better because of it.
Bo this man boooo
Great class, great guy. Laid back in his class, easy guy to discuss with. He really gets you thinking. He's probably the main reason why I decided to get a Philosophy minor.
I was in 2 classes he taught (230 and 333). I developed an appreciation for his abilities the second time. If you do not do the daily readings and/or not go to class you will not do well at all. I highly recommend 333 (he is the only one who teaches it).
He has a certain animosity toward his students, especially those who contact him outside of class. His book is horrible; I would use it for toilet paper, but I don't trust it near my ass. There are much better profs for this class. Easy though.
This guy rocks. He is pretty funny, gives great lectures. Explains the topic very well. He is a teacher you need to have atleast for one class.
He is very cocky and only likes to hear what he believes, any counter points will be scoffed at by him. His quizzes are difficult and his book is by far the worst piece of crap I ever had to read, Im definately going to burn it...
I dont know what you guys are thinking, he is my favorite professor!! He is hilarious and he relates the material to you in ways that you understand, if you are having trouble with this class it is only because you dont go or dont do the readings.
He is hilarious, but I don't sometimes I'm not sure what he wants from us.
I look forward to Kupfer's class every time I have it. He does a great job with explaining the material and he really knows his stuff. He also makes class interesting/funny. The quizzes aren't hard if you just read the assigned material!
fun teacher
This is a great class that will compliment any major, and Kupfer is a great professor. Awesome sense of humor, interesting lecture, and just reading the material makes it not TOO tough. I would really like to meet his daughter...he talks about her a lot
Attendence policy is bogus- Watch Out!! Missed more than 3 classes & failed DESPITE "A" average & reasons for miss were documented family emergencies! Strongly recommend avoiding any class by him unless you can absolutely guarantee yourself neve
I love Kupfer. I have taken two of his classes and was a T.A. for him also. He's a great guy and always helpful. Not hard if you talk to him about problems, and he's very approachable. He's definitely tough on attendance though.
Rocks!
Great teacher, he creates great discussion and is very enjoyable to listen to.

Made the class fun!!
Class is much easier and you get a much better grade if you do the readings. He assigns pretty interesting ones, and leads very helpful discussions. Test questions are sometimes a little bit difficult, but if you go to most of the classes and pay attention, you should get a good grade.
He is a great guy. Defintely my best and favorite professor so far. I don't mind coming to class to hear his lectures. Very Interactive class. Papers can be a little difficult, but Kupfer is very willing to help his students. He is very witty and intelligent, but able to relate to his students ve
This guy teaches so incredibly! You get so much out of the class! I highly recommend taking it..yes the papers are graded a little bit heavily..but with the daily quizzes..it's really easy to make up for lost points!
He's a pretty good prof, but grades extremely hard on his papers, so be prepared to not get the grade you want to.
I really enjoyed his class. Quizzes were not that difficult if you do the readings. Papers are graded a bit tough, but fairly. He has a passion for the material that is missing from many professors. He also keeps class interesting and lively. Attendance policy is brutal. Miss 3 classes & fail.
Try and avoid this guy if at all possible, thinks way too highly of himself to do any real good. Expects the whole class to watch a single movie outside of class.. Too bad there are not 200 rental places in ames. Overall not a bad guy, but a horribly boring class, and the video thing was rediculous.
Aesthetics is a pretty fabulous class. Very laid-back.
Boorish and preachy. Anal about seating of all things. I would not reccomend to upperclassmen or the highly intellegent, as he will insult your intellegence.

this class sucked. not really worth my time, and was very boring and anal about many things.
You learn a lot, but the class is pretty hard. Attendance is required and there is a seating chart. Papers are tough and so are the tests. Take it if you want to learn, not an easy A.
He's not as easy as he sounds. Almost every single class he gave a quiz which was over the assigned reading. Papers (there are 4) are the most heavily weighed but take forever to write! (Tough subjects) and his 2 exams are only worth 10% each. Atendance is mandatory- miss 3 or grade suffers and you'll miss quizzes. He has terrible jokes- very mean!
VERY interesting, I looked forward to class every day. Really got into some great discussions - animal rights, licensing parenting, the morality of friendship, the will to power, etc. Great teacher!

Phil 230 with Kupfer was my favorite class throughout my entire college experience. I think he was a great teacher and he made the material interesting. He is a little set in his ways but what older professor isn't?
I've never had a professor more full of himself. Instead of trying to actually help you understand anything he spent the entire class trying to be cool and make people like him. And don't ever be tired when you go to his class because if you even let your head fall for a second he'll single you out and treat you like a idiot in front of everyone.
Although he is a knowledgable philosophy professor, I feel that he could care a less about the success of his students. He is extremely anal and takes pride in the fact. Strict attendence, seating chart, no closing your eyes, pretty much your mean high school English teacher all over again.
As provincial and stereotypical as they come. His views on gender equity are right out of Steinem, and they don't weather well. A stooge for the liberal elite.
Kupfer was a good professor to listen to and was interesting. His biggest downfall was his grading system as well as the pointless readings that were required for tests.
best teacher i have ever had. I took many of his classes even though they didn't contribute to my graduation status.
Pick your seat wisely on the first day of class. Assigned seating.
Class isn't too difficult.Just make sure you do the daily reading (3-10 pages) and if you brief that(like I did 15 minutes before class) you will do fine.3/4 movies were over fun to watch movies so the papers weren't that big of a deal.Watched movie while I did my paper to get the specifics in the paper.Midterm/Final didn't study and Got B in class
He's a pretty cool professor. My first qualm is that he will never admit that he is wrong when presenting to the class. Multiple times, students (myself included) has either a) disproved him, or b) come up with an answer that he "doesn't like", and he with a shrug or even not acknowledging it. In addition, he's a bit too preachy (politically).
fun class, test questions are the same as the quiz ones so make sure you copy them down in class
Kupfer was a great teacher. very witty. if you are the type of person who likes to argue, then you probably won't like him as much. if you just do the reading, listen and take down notes on the quizzes then you will do fine.
Kupfer was NOT one of my favorite professors. He is very rude and has an offensive sense of humor in my opinion. However, the class itself was fairly easy.
Go to this class to learn, rather than an easy A, he can be a jackass of a teacher and if you don't agree with him he may suck, but overall knows a lot about philosophy.
his humor rides the line of offensive at times but once pointed out to him he corrected his humor to fit the class. the class mixed philosophy with modern movies which made it interesting. show up, take notes and do the work and an A is in your future.
This professor is awesome. If you are easily offended though, you should not take this class. If you get into it, you will develop many of your views about morality.
Kupfer is a lot of fun. He's gotten better at accepting other points of view for sure. He's very personable, not like some mechanical-sounding professors I've had. I often stay after class to chat with him. I'll miss Phil 340!
Kupfer's humor may be offensive to some people, but it can be really funny because you have to know he's only joking. He is a very knowledgeable professor and teaches by having a conversation with you. You can miss 3 classes per semester, and it is good to come to class because often there is a 10 pt T/F quiz over the reading. Overall a fun class!
Good class, interesting subject. Make sure you're able to make it to all/nearly all classes because it'll hurt your grade if you don't. Keep up on the readings and come to class because there are quizzes on the readings most days. There are a few essays and tests, you have to make sure you really understand the material! REALLY don't skip class!!!
Awesome and inspiring. Also very hot.
I took this in fall 1982. He was great. (My son also had him within the last few years.)I thought he was tolerant of students' views opposing his own, as long as students understood that they needed to support those views. I thought he did a lot (positively) to lead students to improve the formulation and expression of their own ideas.
Overall one of the best teachers I've had in any subject. He's funny and also makes sure that the class understands the topics. He's also easily approachable and can help at anytime. Overall I thought the class was fun and he's a great teacher!
A fantastic, funny professor! You have to do a lot of reading, but it's all interesting topics that you should be educated about!
Kupfer is a great professor. He's clear on what he expects you to know, has set expectations from the start and will help if you don't understand something. His humor can toe the line but he will censor himself if concerns are expressed. He's extremely knowledgeable about his subject and reasonable. He expects you to think critically.
definitely need the books but a great professor
Took Phil 230 and absolutely loved it. The books are a must have but they are interesting once you get the hang of how to comprehend them which doesn't take long. He is a great professor, you just have to put in some work for the class.
The class I had was small (30 students), and by the end of it we knew each others' names and weren't afraid to talk to one another. He makes an effort to get on a personal level with the students. He uses the Socratic method and does not lecture. The entire class is discussion based on readings with quizzes everyday, four essays, and two exams.
He's a great guy, knows your name, creates discussion well (as a lot of the class is discussion based). As long as you do the readings you're in good shape grade wise, its not horribly difficult. But as a teacher he's awesome, take his class.
Great professor, really cares about students success and learning. Lots of reading and quizzes can be tricky, but you will learn a lot and he is generous with grades if you work hard. Grades are mostly based on papers and exams. Go to class for attendance and quizzes. He actually gets to know everyone's names and also looks like Anthony Hopkins
I absolutely loved Dr. Kupfer. He's very kind and really cares about his students education. Attendance and participation are important, as the class is spent discussing readings. The only thing I didn't like was that he didn't use blackboard, so I didn't know how I was doing in the class (other than by my own estimation) until final grades.
Reading is required before each class, but usually no more than 10 pages; enough to skim over and be prepared. Participation in class isn't necessarily required, but it's easy and you will end up wanting to. He builds a very accepting community, and I know the names of everyone in the class.
This class is compromised of weekly quizzes over the readings, a few essays based off of movies and two exams. It's not difficult but it does require that you do the readings, but they are short readings. He is a great professor. Super funny and super kind. There are no study guides for the exam so make sure you know the material as its taught.
He's one of my fav professors, but he makes you work. Such funny stories and you can't help but be engaged. Some advice for all his classes: Do the reading! figure out the author's main idea Go to class and discuss, he will be more lenient on grades if you try Take notes on the quizzes and study these for the exams Go to office hours for papers
Kupfer was an awesome professor. He made it easy to engage in class and stay focused. He encouraged deep thinking and promoted sharing your opinion. He seems to be a caring guy. Stay off your phones in class! One thing he hates <<
Kupfer is really enthusiastic about the content, lectures are short, and the class is overall really enjoyable because HE has such a good time teaching it. Don't fall behind on the readings and do well on the quizzes to keep your grade up.
This is the only class I have taken of his, and it's online. I wouldn't recommend taking a class online with him, especially if you have extenuating circumstances that cause you to miss something. He will not help you or be understanding at all. Overall the class is average, but prof makes assignment due dates confusing and is not very considerate.
Kupfer is a great professor! He really enjoys the material he teaches and cares about his students. Just make sure to do the readings, watch the lectures, and do the quizzes.
Kupfer is very approachable outside of class and is easy to get a hold of if you have any questions. Criteria for papers can sometimes be confusing but he's very helpful.
The material you learn is so irrelevant and old. The quizzes and tests are about the small details of essays that have nothing to do with the point. The essays are graded very harshly and the prompts are so vague. There are so many better philosophy courses to take.
Didn't give a clear rubric for essays and then when met with during office hours he still wasn't clear with how grading works. Doesn't check grammar on his quizzes and uses outdated readings and terminology. You won't know your grade unless you email him.
Doesn't check tests for errors, there was no rubric given for any of the essays (which aren't even really essays), doesn't appreciate students with differing views, all the papers we read were decades out of date, and he wasn't clear on what the grading scale for the class would be. The grading scale in the syllabus is not how he actually grades.
Loved Dr. Kupfer. Constantly pushed my knowledge and bounds to the limits but in the best way. If you like concrete courses that teach you to conform and memorize rather than think independently and deeply, this course is not for you. Would highly recommend taking a course with him.
I took this class online so I'm not sure how the class typically works regularly. However, this class is almost entirely papers. You have several quizzes weekly but their weight is only 20% of your grade if I remember correctly, whereas the papers are 50%. READ THE READINGS. Everything is off of the readings. Ask him questions, he's gives feedback.
Absolutely my favorite professor I've had so far. Incredible lectures. Very hard grader and the exams are definitely difficult but the class is worth it. Even if you hate philosophy, it's still an amazing class. Made me change my minor.
Professor Kupfer is an entertaining and awesome teacher. Prepare to read a lot, and he expects participation during lectures. However, he makes class hilarious and thought-provoking. There are many quizzes, a few papers, and a few exams. If you read the material and engage in class, you're likely to do well.
Horrible.
He is a great professor and this class was fun! There is a lot of reading outside of class, but he goes over the readings during his lectures.
Great professor! I loved getting to listen to Kupfer and learn about philosophy, take this class with him !
funniest prof ever
One of my favorite professors I have ever had. Makes class very engaging and interesting especially with how difficult the material is. Would recommend to anyone!
He is a great professor who cares about his student's ability to process the material and build upon the knowledge learned in every lecture. The lectures are interactive and very interesting to listen to. A couple of essays and several exams are all quite easy if you chip away at them over time and ask questions.
By far my favorite professor that I've gotten to take a class with. Very open minded and discussions were always interesting. This class is one that has stuck with me even 3 semesters later. Most of the class was spent discussing art and thinking critically about messaging, meaning, etc. There's a lot of reading, but it was always interesting.
Papers have very little guidelines and are harshly graded. He basically forces you to participate by calling on names randomly. Exams are based on lectures so take notes! ALWAYS be ready to be randomly called on. Dont participate too much, he will start calling on you more. Hes funny but won't take any criticism so be careful asking him questions.
Readings are mandatory and you must read them prior to the lecture as tests are given after almost every reading. You have to watch movies, they are very old and along with the readings hard to understand. Does not go over the reading to explain it until after the test. Cannot see grade throughout the course, he can give you an "estimate" though.
Kupfer is hilarious and super sweet. He is very lecture heavy but keeps you engaged throughout the entire class. It can be an adjustment to get used to his teaching style, but he makes the class great. I love his class and I would definitely take it again. Super kind and caring and old school!
I have also taken other, higher PHIL courses; none were as difficult as this. The paper guidelines are brief, the grading criteria is unclear, & grading is very harsh. He is not open to criticism, & on more than one occasion, said things to me that were quite rude. I really wanted to like him because his lectures are entertaining & he is funny.
