Really funny guy, great to listen to him in lecture. Is very approachable. Also, he gave way more time than neeeded on online tests and assignments! Would highly recommend.
Very entertaining teacher. Very knowlegeable of the topic. Gives plenty of time for tests and quizes, which are online. The exams are often MUCH harder than any problem done in class and often require alot of work. Overall a pretty good teacher.
Exams Very hard and near impossible questions. Starts year easy and get very confusing as time progresses. Some questions have no real answers or subject not covered. Avoid teacher at all costs!!!
Seemed good for first half of the year. Then everything went downhill. He cannot teach. The class is a lecture, but may as well be online. All quizzes, tests, homeworks, lecture notes are online. He will give simple example of a problem in class and then the most challenging one in existence on the quizzes and tests. Do not take his class.
I dont get this guy. In class he is a great guy, but he is a horrible teacher. On the tests/quizzes/homework, everything goes to hell. The problems are much harder and more indepth than the example problems in class or the book. The class is impossible. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH THIS TEACHER!
This guy is new to the technology here at RIT. So he has some trouble teaching. He goes off on tangents often, and they are usually hilarous. If you dont care about chemistry, or if your just taking it to get an easy A, or an easy 3 credits, Take this class
I took chemistry with this professor through the online section using myCourses. It was a disaster. First off yhe lectures are based on QuickTime videos that he has nothing to do with himself. Secondly, tests are often scheduled to be done in the wrong order and cover the wrong material. Week 5 quiz due before week 4, etc. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR!
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS! goes by Chemgod. He's horrible. Doesn't care if you learn anything or not. Tests + quizzes are awful. The Q's are completely different than the ones you practice in class. doesn't really teach, just reads off of his PP presentations. Won't give you any help if you approach him for assistance. seriously, avoid him.
Tries to mix it up with lectures - not always successfully. Very easy to talk to. Would take him again.
Horrible teacher, the tests, quizzes, and homework are nothing that he teaches us in class and has nothing to do what we use in lab. Everything is understandable in class until you get to doing the exams which are open notes, but notes--not even the book helps! Avoid this teacher!
Lectures tend to be very difficult to follow, especially on days that he goes off topic (which is quite frequently). Questions on the homeworks and exams are much more complex than examples provided in lecture. Very sarcastic, especially when people ask for his assistance.
He's not as bad as a lot of students make him out to be.
I have no idea what the other people are talking about! This class is super easy. Prof. is a very easy grader. Tests are OPEN BOOK. Online quizzes are great, and homework problems are exactly the same as test questions. Lectures are boring, but don't really need to go to get an A.
Great teacher. Very easy grader. Hard to fail.
Awful teacher. He is very unclear, gives impossible quizzes online, gives homework due the day of the est that has NOTHING to do with the test, and if everyone fails a test, hell claim its the students fault. Worst teacher ever.
out of all the professors i have had since attending, he is by far one of the worst. he offers no degree of leniency when it comes to a student seeking a chance for grade improvement and when it comes to contacting him, he is cold to say the least. questions get sluffed off as if they were a bother and he avoids emails seeking help or "advice".
Extremely unprofessional, completely ambiguious in every topic he teaches, too light and easy going. If you've already learned chemistry and just need the credit, take the class. But if your trying to learn, he is horrible at it. Inconistent questions with the book, u can't really learn by the book. open book, because he doesn't use the book ever!
Awful, uninterested teacher. You will learn very little. Has little to no interest in individual's success. Avoid at all costs. I asked for some extra help 6 times and he blew me off in a ten week period!!!!
ok where to start? DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN FOR ANYTHING! I took AP Advanced Chem in high school, therefore most of this material in Gen & anyl II was review for me. This guy is terrible, he has no idea how to teach, has 4 ?'s per test that are like riddles and likes tricking students. Forget about help from him, he just blows you off!Take Thomas Kim!
worst chem teacher ever!! don't take he, he teaches with cookies, and asks about unreal compounds
This guy is very inappropriate in class. I didn't learn from him. I went from an A student to a C because I couldn't figure out his confusing tests. The lecture is on one thing, hws and quizzes another, and then the test is on a completely different subject. You honestly don't know what to study. Do yourself a huge favor and TAKE THOMAS KIM!!!
He is a HORRIBLE professor! In class it was like he was speaking another language. The homeworks were very hard and he refused to give help or would make rude comments if you requested help. The tests were usually 4 problems for your 50 min class, usually at the end of the 50 mins there would still be half of the 200 person lecture there. DONT TAKE
Most kids don't come to class (attendance isn't mandatory PLUS its at an evil 8AM), then they fail the class and have the nerve to complain. Even if you suck at chem (like me)...just go to class more than half the time, stay awake and pay mild attention. You'll get at least a B (Talking from experience) A lil effort outside class and you have an A.
lanz is awesome!!! he's always around for office hours and i'd suggest taking advantage of that. He wont always tell you exactly how to do a problem but he'll lead you there so that you actually learn. Tests are open book but challenging..He always give out extra credit and drops your lowest test score. FAVORITE TEACHER!!
Took for 215-217. Could be very hard to follow in lecture at times. A rather difficult class after 215 if you have little experience in Chemistry. However, tests are open book and open note, so that helps. Also, he's very good with giving partial credit on exams and homework. Quick grading. Overall, definitely not the worse teacher I've ever had.
I don't get all of the negativity thrown at Professor Lanzafame. If you come to class and get your free clicker bonus points (I had about 30 extra points), there's no way you should not get a 100 in this class. The tests are really easy too. He was good in recitation as well. Plus, his mole dance is quite entertaining as well.
This guy is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. His tests, hw, and quizzes are impossible. He basically gets pleasure out of students failing. Sure, he gives bonus points, but not nearly enough to make up for other grades. He is completely unwilling to work with your learning style. Do NOT take him as a chem teacher if you want to pass!
If you ask him for help, don't expect anything useful. Absolutely no help with questions and class is useless and you have to attend.
pretty cool
Two quarters of hell. Useless professor but a cool guy. Feel bad for saying it, but take Dr. Langner if you can. :/
good guy not the most helpful guy but if he likes you, you will do good in the class from the bonus points...also loves blondes
Terrible teacher! DO NOT TAKE HIM! Assumes EVERYONE knows everything & a lot of chemistry before even taking intro. Tests are only 3-4 questions even MIDTERM & FINAL EXAMS! and they are very hard and confusing. Even though he requires you to go to every class you learn nothing and he goes a mile a minute explaining nothing with horrible analogies.
Good guy with good intentions, not the best teacher. If you dont know anything about chemistry when going into this class, I suggest switching.
Terrible lecturer but makes the class work easy. Gives tons of extra credit opportunities, tests are easy to pass due to the amount of partial credit he gives, asks clicker questions in class for extra credit. He is also funny (or at the very least entertaining) in a 9am class.Don't bother with office hours but he's good with emails.
Awesome. Best ever. Don't know why some people complain.
Not the best teacher for learning, but he's a nice guy with easy grading.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but the daily clicker questions that amount to a lot of extra credit's helpful in the long run. His tests are harder (3~5 with work!) but it's an incentive to study. Homeworks are shorter. Not a bad lecturer at at all, and is quite funny. Honestly can't see why some people complained.
Class was easy, and there were plenty of opportunities for extra credit. He's also funny in class, and often switches between whiteboard and powerpoint, which I like. The only bad thing is his tests are only 4 or 5 questions, but you are able to get partial credit.
I took Lanzafame for chem 2 at MCC over the summer. He was really funny and used quite twisted analogies to make complex concepts seem simple. Definitely recommended for summer term.
So, i've got over 100 in his class since there are pre-class bonus assignments, and the homeworks are fairly easy. Do all the work, go to class, and you will get a good grade.
Not really understanding why so many people are saying he's a bad teacher. If you take advantage of the extra credit and pay attention in class it's an easy A.
He's not a bad professor, he just doesn't really make an effort to do any work outside of the classroom for the students. He gives a lot of extra credit though, so getting an A isn't too hard. The tests are quality over quantity, but if you even vaguely pay attention they're reasonable, and his partial credit it fair.
He makes claims that he drops the lowest 100 out of 500 points, then doesn't follow through.
Easy A. Generous with extra and partial credit. Drops lowest 100 out of 500 points, which can be attendance or a test. Recommended that you attend, as that is where many extra points can come from. Not very helpful outside of class or in recitation, but tests are fairly straightforward and easy if you do the homework and go to recitation.
I love chemistry, but this guy manages to make it not so fun. He teaches bare minimum, and repeats himself an excessive amount of times. Easy A though. If you get chemistry and just want to get a good grade take him; if you want to really enjoy the class, don't. Unless Bailey is your other option....
Looks intimidating, but he's okay. An easy A course. Quite helpful and always response to email. For those who are complaining, maybe you should study like a college student, not like a high school student, waiting for the teacher to feed everything.
Has a lot of extra credit, drops your lowest test grade. Allows you to use a cheat sheet. The kinda teacher that will bump you up to an A if you have an 88. Class was not that hard, creates a lot of opportunities to help you get an A.
Was very nervous about Chem as I didn't really understand it in High School, but the text was great and his lectures were good reinforcement of the material. Easy A if you do the homework, extra credit, and pay attention. He allows a "cheat sheet" that you can use for all the tests and drops the lowest test grade so you can skip the final.
Easiest General Chemistry Lecture to get an A in. Nuff said.
He is talks in the third person, but is very helpful with his chemgod.com website
Took gen chem 3 with him. Way too easy. Almost everyone in the class got an A. Had near a 110 at the end of the quarter. The inflation allows people to get grades they don't deserve. Too much extra credit as well.
This teacher, is not only interesting by given examples to help you understand material, but also He will act out the behaviors of atoms and is very interactive. it is possible to get a 200% in his class!
Ridiculously easy class. Allows cheat sheets on tests. Take him if you can.
The prof offers a ton of extra credit opportunities and teaches the material really well. Be warned that he uses a lot of quirky examples though. The exams are based off the homework and what he teaches in class. He may seem cold during office hours, but he's really a nice guy. It's an easy A if you study, like any other college classes.
The grading system is broken. I was able to not show up to any classes after Thanksgiving, along with many missed beforehand, not take the final, and still get an A. Teaches concepts well, though runs through slideshows a little fast.
Not a bad professor if you just need the grade. Myself and a lot of other PA majors just needed to make sure our grades were good, we don't need to understand chem. If you go to class, do all the mastering (pre-class and homework) and study for the tests, you will get an A. I had Mclean first semester and then chose him. Best decision ever.
It's hard to stay motivated to show up to his class because it's always at 8:00 AM, but you can get by skipping a few classes here and there. Exams aren't giveaways but they're doable.
Makes bad jokes but he is a good professor.
I chose to have this 8am in order to secure this A.
Easily the worst professor I've had. Asked him a question in recitation, he refused to help me with anything relevant to the question and wouldn't let me explain what I was asking without interrupting me. Questions on homework don't make sense, asked my chemistry major friend for help and he was just as lost as I was.
Show up, do the extra credit and homework, and study before tests and you will get an A.
His lectures are pretty good, and funny, even at 8 am. He really likes it when you participate, and actually cares about his students.
Very tough professor. Makes you work for it. Very hard to get a straight answer out of him in response to a specific question. Has a propensity to assign extra homework if he is not satisfied with test results. Has a good sense of humor for a chemistry professor. Will give extra credit, but requires 90% class participation for it.
Apparently his class used to be an easy A, but not anymore. I'm lucky to be pulling a low B for the semester. In addition to the Mastering Chem, he's handing out weekly packets to complete too, which take up way too much time. And each test is four open ended questions with harsh grading, so if you mess up you're screwed.
Dr. Lanzafame's lectures usually don't even relate to the Mastering Chemistry homework, and you have to teach yourself the concepts. His weekly homework "packets" are worded weirdly and often confusing. His tests are 4 questions (math), and if you don't know one, you're in trouble. However, he gives a lot of extra credit, which is helpful.
Just a clear cut example of a teacher who doesnt teach for students. The material is not that hard and you can learn it yourself thanks to the internet but he teaches for professors not for students. Also extremely condescending when you ask a question.
Joe is a great professor. He is straight forward in requesting what he wants and gives you as much time to complete it. Chemistry II requires effort regardless with who you take it with. However, if you do the work and put the time into it... there's no way you can't learn Chem II and get a good grade of Joe. Hint: Try to get him to laugh
A lot of people say different things about Lanzafame, it depends what kind of professor you prefer. If you like a class where the professor cracks corny jokes, shows examples on the board, and answers questions during lectures, Lanzafame's your guy. Easy homework. If you are going to skip, don't miss attendance quizzes, they are easy points!
Joe is an alright professor. He can teach the stuff, but he can get sidetracked easily because he tries to be funny. A lot. He likes class participation, he even brought candy to lectures so we would answer his questions. He does make you feel stupid for asking some questions, but don't be fazed. Just ask. Also, he gives pop attendance quizzes.
Some concepts of chemistry require more than just a few minutes to explain, and that is what Joe has. He does problems in class, and he shows them perfectly. The problems in his slides and homework are basically your study material. Can I say he's easy? Maybe to me, but if you have no experience in chem, you may have to study extra hard.
Tests are only 5 questions on average, (but he gives partial credit)
He's a fine teacher, if you can pay attention, and study a lot out of class. But beware he grades quite harshly, the way your high school teachers said college professors would grade. The class is generally okay, but it can get awkward sometimes when he goes off on a tangent about his personal life (his books), or some other weird thing.
He's a fairly easy grader compared to most RIT professors, and his powerpoints are very helpful. I definitely try to avoid talking to him personally, he's somewhat belittling and arrogant. Regardless, he teaches the class well, and it's not difficult to get an A if you do the homework and come to class.
Dr. Lanzafame has a great sense of humor but, unfortunately, students arent being graded on how well he can do stand up. Presenting the class with ridiculous and unhelpful metaphors is his attempt at teaching course material. If theres any positive, its that his weight structure makes his class nearly impossible to fail.
best of the 3 professors, though not necessarily good
His tests have four questions. FOUR. TOTAL.
He's a fairly straightforward guy. He has trouble explaining some things, but he is straightforward in the sense that he simply gives the information in a simple way. Perhaps he could work on explaining the more abstract stuff more clearly, but he is open to questions and tries to help. Tests aren't too difficult if you do work. Pretty cut and dry.
He will often explains "this changes that", without ever explaining what "this" or "that" is in his words or slides. His tests are fair, so if you do the small amount of work for this class and take it seriously, you will do well.
This professor is believes in you helping yourself . If you are unclear about certain things he wants you to figure it out yourself, by doing so he will answer your question with a question . He can sometimes be sarcastic so you have to adjust to his sense of humor .
Did not stay on topic during lectures. Does not explain the material at a level students understand. Not helpful at all outside of class. Worst class I've ever taken.
His lectures tend to feel like they drag on, but he goes over a lot of examples in class which can be helpful for many. He is a little weird sometimes.
Joe is pretty chill but he gets off-track easily. He offers a lot of bonus and grades fairly easily. He also allows a "cheat sheet" for every test, which is a full piece of paper, front and back, and you can write whatever you want. Good class for those that do not feel very comfortable with chemistry.
Chem I with Lanzafame is the easiest class I've ever taken. He gives a ton of extra credit, his tests are super easy, and recitation is free points. I didn't even show up to most of the classes and did 100% fine. He tries to be "edgy" with his jokes and it usually just kinda falls flat but I'd take him for the easy A anyway.
If you would prefer to just complete chemistry math problems that do not test your ability to comprehend the actual chemistry material, take Joe. The exams only have 4 math questions on them! There are multiple opportunities for extra credit. If you show up to class and somewhat pay attention, this class will be an easy A.
His lectures are broad and confusing. The homework and tests are a lot harder than the material covered in class. His exams are only 4-5 questions so you REALLY have to understand the material to pass. He is available for help outside of class but will often answer your question with another question which can be frustrating.
Plenty of people are not particularly fond of Lanzafame, but in reality, he's just a chill professor who is definitely willing to help you succeed in class. He offers a ton of extra credit, drops lowest grades, and is overall quite enjoyable to learn from. If you don't skip lectures, you'll probably never need the textbook.
Very boring and goes off on tangents often.
One of the cringe-worthy people I've ever met. He makes very inappropriate comments on the regular. However, most of the time you don't even have to listen. His lectures are a snooze, so as long as you show up and copy the slides, you'll be perfectly fine. Super easy professor.
Joe is a really unique lecturer, but a great one nonetheless. He brings a somewhat unconventional approach to the subject of chemistry, but if you don't fight it and follow along, it makes the material easier to grasp and-- dare I say it-- fun. Joe's clearly not for everyone, I guess, but he's a tie for my favorite professor at RIT.
As long as you do your homework, it is pretty hard to fail the course. Lanzafame gives lots of extra credit opportunities. You take 3 tests throughout the semester and he drops the lowest grade. The final is mandatory but he gives you a list possible topic. Overall, the class is boring and he can get off topic but it's worth it for the easy A.
Lectures do not make any sense and he easily gets off track. You might as well skip every class and just teach yourself the topics, you will get more out of the course that way. Gives a good amount of extra credit and the course isnt that hard.
He's a weird guy and he loves using analogies to teach. Some of the projects and concepts are confusing since there isn't clear criteria. I would recommend not going to lecture, it is more helpful to go to the SI sessions (where they talk about the lecture of each day). However, I think its ok and Iif you work hard you could get a B.
I can't stress this enough: THE TESTS WERE TOO LONG! Five 20-minute questions in a 50 minute test period? Unreasonable! I will say that he did give a lot of options for extra credit, and attempted to bump grades on the final by dropping the lowest question. If you're not good at chemistry, don't take this guy. Do read his novel, though. 10/10
I really like this professor, although he not very good at showing his feeling, he is very caring professor. He always stay extra open up his office hours anytime if you need help. He always looking out for you and try to give good feedback . He really understand people struggle knowing that all grade doesn't really defind person life and result.
He can be rude when you ask him questions. Only about 25% of what is on the homework is discussed in class. 3 tests, drops the lowest. Recitation problems are more like the exams than homework. Lectures are concept heavy tests are mostly numerical problems. Only taking him again because I know I can teach myself and not have to go to lecture.
His lectures are pretty good and will explain the subject fairly well, although when going in for help he wasn't very enthusiastic or helpful. Drops the lowest test out of 3, which is nice, and if you study his "sprint" questions you can get the gist of each test pretty easily.
Very interactive lectures, and posts his slides to myCourses so you can review them at a later date. Tests were fair if you at least read through the material, plus he allows cheat sheets on every exam.
He is very hands off and hardly helps you when you need it. He will respond to your emails with one word responses or not at all. I do not recommend at all.
This guy gets a bad rep from a lot of students, but I can't place why. There's some weird jokes in class, but that's just his sense of humor. I think its pretty funny personally. Overall, he is actually a really great chem lecturer. Can come off rough in office hours, but there is a lot of other support from this class if you are deterred by that.
Gives very hard projects during covid. Tons of homework for only 10% of your grade.
I thought Lanzafame was awesome. I literally took an 8 am because that was the only section he offered for gen chem 2 the semester I took it.
Professor Lanzafame is a decent professor, he does assign a lot of homework, but doing them really helps you understand the topic better. Hw is only 10% of your grade so if you don't want to do some of them it is not a big deal. His projects (online class only) however, are the worst, it's basically a research paper and he grades harshly on these.
His lectures are very dry and some of his jokes are a little creepy and weird, but overall it makes for a fun time. The lectures arent mandatory, and they dont really help unless you need a nap, but make sure you study for the exams because they arent anything like the homework. There is lots of EC tho so its not difficult to pass.
Allowed us to test out of each unit/homeworks via a preliminary exam (very nice if you can pass the preliminary exam!) OWL homeworks suck, but you have to just deal with them. Professor did not respond to my emails sometimes, although he likely gets a lot as class size is large
Lectures peppered with strange divorce jokes, but overall a pretty good experience. Homeworks were pretty hard, so don't fall behind, but this semester he excused them and allowed us to replace our homework grade with our worst exam. Study for the exams because they can be kind of difficult, but you can gauge the hardness from the pre-exams.
I had him for Chem 1 and Chem 2 is the exact same vibe but a lot harder. I got through Chem 1 with my knowledge of high school chem, but Chem 2 is a different story. Make sure to go to SI sessions and study a lot if you want to do good on exams. He gives a lot of generous partial credit so if you have a general idea of what's going on, you'll be ok
Joe's class is designed for failure. Despite what other students have reported, his tests are not designed for success and are usually severely undertimed. When more than half the class cannot finish an exam in the allocated time, this is quite indicative of poor teaching. He did improve the Cengage work from Bailey's class if nothing else.
Words cannot describe how bad this professor is. Our exams are only 4-5 questions and said questions take so long to do, that most students don't even finish. Our final was only 6 questions and only covered about 30% of the course. His triweekly written assignments are so convoluted that grad level chem tutors don't understand them LOSE THE LANZA
Not sure where to begin. Worst Professor I have ever had and that's saying a lot. His exams are unfair and not timed fairly, he is never interested in answering questions during office hours. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!
This class isn't difficult if you show up and pay attention. The ratings below show they don't pay attention considering they think they took CHEM142 when it's actually CHMG142. The tests are definitely difficult, but they are manageable if you know your stuff. Start the homework early, don't wait til end of semester. Overall, it was a pleasure.
first, i think dr. lanzafame is a really great guy, and does a great job of being personable with his class. however, maybe it's just his teaching method that i don't excel with, but i would avoid taking chem 2 with him as much as you can. his lectures are terrible, and his exams are rigorous and difficult to get points on.
The only reason I didn't give this guy the worst rating as a prof is bc worse teachers do exist. He tries to be funny by revealing personal tragedies, but at the end of the day, his brain is so scattered that I had trouble comprehending the second half of chemistry 2 material. Best advice: work FAST on the midterms bc he doesn't give proper time
8+ hours of work a week, and that's if you're not struggling! Even after hours of all these mandatory practice problems, the test questions up the difficulty ten-fold. You'll get test problems that don't reflect anything you've ever seen in the class, so there's no way to prepare.
Tough grader, tough exams without enough time. I learned more about the class material from my lab TA since the lecture section was consistently behind, and the TA taught it more clearly anyway.
Pretty easy class. Lanzafame gives you plenty of time to work on assignments, which are already super quick to begin with. He's very lenient with partial credit on tests, drops the lowest test score, and you can get 10%+ extra credit overall by doing the OWLs. It's honestly really hard to get lower than an A or A- unless you're just not trying.
I have had Professor Lanzafame for both Gen-Chem 1 and 2. You really have to teach yourself the content because lectures are dry and his PowerPoints are difficult to follow. Attend SI sessions if you want to pass the class. Not a very approachable person, very passive aggressive.
Dr. Lanzafame's lectures weren't the best, but he gives you so much opportunity for extra credit and grades his tests with so much partial credit that it really wasn't that big of a deal. The SI sessions helped a ton but he's a fair professor and so long as you put in the work with OWL and the exams, you'll do fine.
I did not enjoy this class, the lectures were very hard to follow he would just flip through slides without giving time to actually understand what they are saying. Tests are only made up of 4 questions, however there was partial credit. Easy to get extra credit by doing more than half of the OWL homework assignments.
He was the funniest professor I ever had. Attendance was not mandatory, but I came to hear his lectures anyway.
made personal jokes like ones about his divorce. rambled about subject matter and did not teach
His lectures are very hard to follow and there is a lot of homework given. If you don't have a good understanding of chemistry, do not take this class. I have learned more from videos on YouTube. The only good thing is that there is extra credit if you do over half of the OWL homework's.
He is not a serious professor. His lectures are perhaps the most useless lectures at the institute. You wont learn anything if you go to the lectures. His thoughts are incoherent, he just reads out from his slides (which are often incoherent as well). He keeps making jokes only the few people who would probably rate him a 5 laugh at.
Dr. Lanzafame is a pretty great guy, contrary to the other ratings given to him. His tests are pretty hard, and there's quite a bit of homework, but Lanzafame really cares about his students getting high grades. He offers so much extra credit, and the lowest of the three test grades gets dropped. He doesn't deserve all the hate he gets.
Pros: Gives cheat sheets for exams (excluding the final) and gives opportunities for extra credit. Cons: You will learn more from the online homework than the lectures, which consisted of many strange personal jokes and slides that are flown through. Exams are difficult. Lanzafame was also passive aggressive and hard to talk to outside of class.
Disorganized and unhelpful lectures. Teaching myself the material on my own time was much better for me, so I ended up ditching almost every lecture in the last month. I did appreciate his flexibility with due dates and attendance. He also gives loads of extra credit, so there's no pressure to score super high on his exams.
Lectures consist of very dicey jokes that are often not the most appropriate for a professional setting. Attendance is optional, though, and you'll most likely learn more via online resources. Not helpful. When asked a question, he just repeats the question back to you like a middle school teacher instead of actually helping. Don't recommend.
Although he was a funny and entertaining professor, he was awful at teaching the subject. If you do not have an understanding of Chemistry, I would not recommend taking his course because it will be extremely difficult for you. Make sure you go to the SI sessions, that is the only way I was able to understand what was being taught.
Absolutely terrible. His tests are all math, no concepts, and are all short answer. I am good with chemistry and reviewed material before attending lectures, and still could barely follow along. He offers lots of extra credit and also curves the final just to hide the fact that his students are failing. The average grade in our class was a 70.
#1 chem prof both sem. His slides are so good if you take notes during class and treat him like a podcast bc he's a very entertaining lecturer. Doesn't require attendance and only 1/2 the OWLs are mandatory to receive 100% for HW. Encourages ppl to work together for the few worksheets he assigns. Great guy, talk to him in class for bonus pts too
Fair grader. Exams are a little challenging, but you'll be fine if you pay attention in class and use his online resources. Very fair with OWL(requiring you to only do half for full credit). Overall, decent professor.
Bad slides that traded practicality in hopes of a laugh. He is easily distracted and easily derailed.
He explains things in a way so that you will be more confused rather than actually learn chemistry. Also kinda rude and impatient. He does know his stuff though, so depending on your learning style if you're able to keep up with his long uneccisarily detailed lecture you may succeed in this class
He's not as bad as people make him out to be. As long as you put in a little bit of effort, you'll be set. His lectures tend to be long and very confusing but overall, he does get the point across.
Professor Lanzafame's class can be challenging, but with practice and tools like unstuck AI, you can succeed. Engaging with the material and using SI sessions helps too.
Lectures were BEHIND the homework by 2 weeks. Tests were IMPOSSIBLE to finish on time. Most students didn't. He actively reveled in the idea of failing large swathes of the class and blamed the students when almost 40% of the class was going to fail. Told the story of how he failed one student 5 times and caused him to drop out to "inspire us".
if you do the owl homework and review the slides by yourself, you will pass this class easily. I skipped about a month of lecture because it was not productive for me and I struggled to pay attention. Highly recommend going to SI sessions. the assignments that were assigned that day and due by midnight sucked tho so beware of those
The tests are four questions, 25 points each. His class is all jokes, so before you go in, you probably want to find a tutor, someone who will actually teach you what you need to know. To reiterate, find someone who can help you because he does not teach.
He doesn't teach the content during lecture in a comprehensible manner and the exams are brutal. Even after attending exam review sessions there were questions that weren't covered beforehand. Attend any and all SI sessions possible. What he says during lecture can be entertaining at times, but it's not worth the expense of your education.
You learn nothing from lectures. Tests are 4 questions and most people don't finish. Tests are not curved. On the most recent test, almost the entire class failed. Lectures are just him reading off of slides and making jokes about his ex wife. Very uncomfortable to be around. If at all avoidable, do not take his class.
Lectures are awful and full of weird or borderline racist jokes. Tests are 75% of the grade and are 4 VERY hard questions each. I took his class because the only other one was at 8 am, even though I was warned not to. Do NOT make the same mistake I did. Look up "When Dream and Day Unite" by Joseph Lanzafame if this isn't enough to convince you...
HE IS TERRIBLE. maybe it's just the rit chem department but, half the students got a's and the others failed.
Do the OWLs...
I think if you skip his lectures (attendance not recorded) to complete OWL homeworks and worksheets on your own rather than sitting in during lectures, you MIGHT find the course easier. I got an F on the first exam attending all lectures, and when I decided to skip his lectures to teach myself the content for the next exam, I got an A+.
I dont think I learned a single thing from him. Everything I learned was from the homework, which there was an insane amount of. The tests, which are worth the majority of your grade, are only comprised of 4 questions, each a different type of problem. So if you mess one up or forget something, your screwed. He does give lots of extra credit
If you put in a minimal amount of effort you will do well in his class. I attended lectures, took notes, and did all the homework and I finished with 114%. His lectures are engaging and he makes an effort to draw analogies. Tests only have four questions but he gives generous partial credit. If you pass the final he passes you no matter your grade.
He is really an excellent lecturer and if you do all of the homework it's basically a guaranteed A. He drops the lowest test and any completion of the homework over 50% is extra credit. He's funny and knowledgeable and very communicative. Lectures can get tedious but are usually pretty engaging. Look up his book for a good laugh.
The amount of OWLs that are assigned is insane, so stay on top of them. Good class if you don't want to actually go to the class (besides exam days) and just use it as a means to teach yourself the material and do the worksheets on your own time. Does offer a lot of extra credit but most of your homework time will be used on his class, plan wisely.
He is the type of professor who talks a lot without saying much. Everyone is often confused, and he does not do a good job explaining what is going on, which is really important in chemistry. Would not take again.
I don't know where to start with Lanzafame. For one his lectures are just plain boring. He doesn't seem to care about the subject what so ever and will go off talking about random nonsense. His tests are 4 questions at 25 points each so if you get one wrong you're screwed. He also has a big obsession with ai and will assign ai based hw which sucks.
I so strongly do not recommend this professor. He heavily utilizes AI to the point of relying on it, has 4 question exams with awful partial credit policies, and is genuinely not a respectful teacher. He has ridiculed students for not knowing things, will be dismissive of questions, and thinks that he can cruise by with humor instead of teaching.
DJ Joe may be a bad teacher, but his lectures are at least engaging and he does care about what he teaches. While his exams are only four questions, he lets you create a cheat sheet, so as long as you pay at least some attention you will pass. Cengage homework is kinda difficult, but no deadline and anything over 50% is extra credit (use this!!!).
I understand why some people dont like him. But honestly I thought he was fantastic, compared to Bailey (I have heard much worse about her). He gets a bad rep but I couldn't recommend him more.
He's lwk funny but he heavily uses AI for homework and assignments. Beware.
If you have a background in Chemistry (AP or Honors) you can treat Gen Chem I as an online course and there is a lot of extra credit. The final had a 28 percent curve and if you score higher than the national average he will pass you with a C even if you were previously failing.
