He puts his lectures on the internet. He is a great teacher however he only teaches the first month and then you dont need to come at all cuz there is no point after that, just read the book or get Jason to help, jasontutor.com. The reason i got an A
Worst teacher ever. All he cares about is that you attend is lame party. Not a giving man in the slightest. I detest him in every way possible.

He is great. He is clear in his lectures, and posts them! Ask him a question and he will answer it, right there, to the point...he is great!
this ass will be teaching chem 321 next year- you'd be wise taking it in the summer. All he'll do is try to prove to the class how intelligent he is by not teaching you anything you need to know and instead pontificating on crap only chemists care about.
He's a good teacher but makes up tough exams.
to put it short, he sux. A lot
he explains stuff pretty well but his exams are very difficult. u have to read a book
really hard class, be sure you actually want to take chem, tests are very hard, he's sometimes hard to understand too
He has a attitude, tests are hard, smart guy but cannot teach.
AHH! watch out incoming freshmansss
Looks like the guy you picked on in school...sigh...how times change...
che 131 is not a fun class first of all. dont take unless u have to for major or something. second, lauher is okay. tests r hard, but do the practice exams and i really mean memorize the ways to do all the problems on them and u set. also read book.
great teacher. i actually understand ORGANIC CHEMISTRY!!! get outta here.
OMG he is so unfair his tests are so hard!! I think he needs to buy a wig. Why did you start teaching organic chemistry when I couldn't even deal with you in general Chemistry!!! I HOPE HE RETIRES!!!!!!!!
i took 131 with him, got an A-.just do the practice tests and go to the review class before the test and u should be fine.in terms of 321, he is a little bit harder, but still the same thing applies.a thing i dont like about him is that on every questions he tries to trick you with 2 similar answers.
Extremely helpful professor...His tests are not very tricky, you just need to remember the smallest things, like what reagent gives you cis instead of trans...I loved it!
Lauher's a good prof. He makes the class fun and is clear about the material. The tests are fine; if you know the material, it's pretty straightforward. Highly enjoyed orgo during his portion of teaching.
Ridiculous. Lousy. Hard tests on top of hard course (Orgo)...cant grade for the life of it. Class is somewhat interesting but how much fun is competing for a limited amount of good grades ?
Alright, he is terrible, I used to think I knew everything after reading his lectures and doing the problems. Then comes the test, and all goes to hell.
RUN if you SEE LAUHER OR HIS TESTS! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!! and save your interest in CHEM! Oh okay, he is smart, so what? you have to be able to teach clearly atleast. Even if your tests are hard, they should atleast make sense!!!
He is one of the Best professors in Stony brook. I will agree organic Chemistry is a challange but hey are not you a PreMed major.
His tests are poorly written multiple choice affairs, which may lead you to get the wrong answer even on material you know well. Don't expect to be able to ask for clarification during the test as the TAs generally don't speak English as a first language and aren't allowed to leave their anti-cheating duties to ask him anything.

He makes all the tests and they are very fair. The last test was such a crappy test, but they made up for it by GIVING away points. I enjoyed the class, its way better then general. Just read the book and highlight and you'll be fine.
EXTREMELY RUDE AND IMPATIENT. ALSO STINK REAL BAD, RECOMMEND DEODORANT
prepare for the worst. lectures are confusing & his tests are even worse. even if u think u know the material after taking the exams ull soon learn u dont. he focuses on the most minor details, & it seems as if he searches 4 ways to throw u off. prepare for orgo to take over ur life. much harder than it has to be, b/c he makes it that way. Horrible
On the first day of class, I liked him, I thought he was cool, but NOT, he sucks, although I got an A, It had nothing to do with this guy, I read the book, learned the material in both 321, 131 on my own. He thinks that 'intelligent' people are worthy of respect and all the ****, if he thinks you are dumb, he will ignore that you are even there
Unfortunately I have to agree with the person before's comment. He is rather unclear and ignores your prescence and existence if you're not (in his eyes) intelligent. And if he sees that you are intelligent, he'll praise you as if tho you were god. Also, he's a bit ****.
the guy is arrogant and thinks the world of himself. I pray for the day they discover a better way than chemistry to underly biology so we don't need to live at the mercy of people like this. By the way he smells like crap. He shows up in chem 322 often and within 30 feet of him the stench is unbearable. DO NOT SIT IN THE FRONT OF THE CLASS...
Very organized. Has a class website with all lecture notes and homework assignments updated almost daily. Clear lecturer overall but at times tries to teach very advanced things that aren't so clear, but these advanced topics usually aren't tested. Tests come straight off of class workshops and assignments. Helpful at office hours.
it gets hard to concentrate on him because he can stink up javits 100 on a bad day but when you do pay attention hes a pretty good teacher but its sooo easy to get lost when he starts talking about the more difficult topics
Professor Lauher tries to make Organic Chemistry seem easy, but he goes way to fast, he doesnt pay any attention to any of the students sitting on the upper deck of javits and he just cant teach. His power point slides are too animated and when it comes to looking them up online later, you cant understand what he did
Orgo is hard.. but hes a great prof.. i dont know what people are saying .. makes the subject tolerable..tests are fair.. go to lecture/workshop youll be fine
He is a nice professor and is willing to help out. Also a very smart guy. What he teaches is from the textbook so if you read and put in the work you will understand the material.
Inorganic was a joke. I think he was one of the worst teachers I ever had in my life. No personality whatsoever. Part of our grade was based upon whether or not you went to his lame halloween party. Aren't things like that illegal.
Yea- he smells pretty bad and he always says orgo is easy but that usually just makes us students feel dumb. His lectures are pretty bad, he can't really teach. The tests aren't "difficult" per se, but we're never given enough time to complete them. Study hard- gotta know the stuff REALLY well...
Its orgo. come on
Lauher is a fair grader and teacher. Do the workshops and understand them, understand his lectures, do some textbook probs, and you will get minimal B. His tests are based on workshops. He loves chemistry and knows his material well.

Very intelligent guy. Sometimes not so great at communicating his immense amount of knowledge. Made tests quite difficult, but was good about giving partial credit, a fair grader. He was always happy to answer any questions and office hours with the professor were a great help. You just can't let his B.O. get in the way of you speaking with him.
he is really fun professor to talk to, especially about soccer
The subject matter is not THAT bad, but still takes work to understand. You have a 50-50 shot of catching him in a good mood to answer your questions clearly. Some of the questions on the final sort of came out of nowhere. You have to be ready to spend a lot of time studying for his class
i didn't like that he teaches us things that are not in the book. i know that we're the honors class and thats y he presents us with harder material, but its impossible to learn without a textbook for reference.
He picked on me a lot, even though I don't care. Made sure that the material was cryustal clear. First test was straightfoward, but then thrid test was a lot of Organic, not in the book. Should have taught us more physical chemistry, instead of biological. I was sleep deprived, sick, and vomiting on the day of the final and still pulled an A.
I liked the class but the professor was sometimes "hard". What I mean by that is that he tends to teach some stuff not from the textbook and that makes it difficut to study for the tests when his lecture notes are mostly diagrams with no almost notes on them. But if you go to lecture and really pay attention, you will pass the course. But be prepared
challenging, but not that bad. shows concern for students. is willing to help if you show that you are willing to learn.
He is a very good professor, organic chemistry is not an easy subject to teach and he does it so well. i'm not even doing well, bu ti know he is a very good teacher. he knows his stuff and he teaches well and he is very considerate. i think he is a fantastic professor and not many people can teach this subject like he can.
ur not gonna like him after having an excellent prof like Fowler. he only taught us for like 1 lecture and that was enough for me to dislike him.. and that fowler showed us a synthesis question that Lauher made and it was a hard one.. so his hard questions are another reason to dislike him.. (plus i heard he has a funny smell)
HE ROCKS!!!!
He makes stuff difficult and thinks that everybody is chemistry genius like the recitation TA. Confuse me with his lecture and no pre-class notes to write on. Just ran through the powerpoints without detail explanation. The midterms are not as hard as his lecture. The workshops are even more horrible, with super difficult problems not in the exams.
love him! he's awesome. i just took one of his tests and got a B+ it was so easy.
He doesn't explain very well in his lectures/
He sucks! Expect you to know everything prior to lectures. Just flips thru powerpoints and doesn't really explain them.
I don't care what anyone says, I love him. The only thing that sucks is that he doesnt really teach he just asks clicker questions & expects you to know. You basically have to teach yourself but it's not too bad, just do ALOT of practice problems. The tests are very fair. He gives a study guide and only whats on there is on the test.
Prof Lauher is one my favorite professors in school. He's such a humorous guy, makes a boring topic like Organic Chemistry actually be interesting, and is very understanding towards students. HE ROCKS!!
Awesome Professor! Exams are extremely fair. He makes the concepts easy to understand. I got an A in his class and I studied the weekend before for his exams, just go over your lecture notes and workshops. You should get an A if you understand the workshops. The average of the class was a B and he tries to make sure everyone gets that A.
he is not the best organic chem prof when compared to Fowler on how much he give you.. however his exams are easy and the study guides are helpful... i still prefer Fowler over him even tho i got an A on his class.
TRYS TO MAKE TOPICS AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE. DOES HIS BEST TO PASS EVERYONE.
He is a good prof
Amusing character for some. Helpful at the right time, just don't wait until the last minute.
There could not be a more amazing professor at SBU. He is the most helpful professor that I have ever had. If you do the work, do the problems of the day daily, and look over old exams and notes, you are golden. The work that you put in is equivalent to your grade. Very fair course and is an extremely understanding and amazing person.
Tries to make chemistry as simple as possible. Very helpful and very nice.
He is a terrible professor. He yells at students for asking questions during office hour, gives impossible exams (meaning you won't have enough time to finish unless you wrote it) and engineers the course despite its lack of 'curve' to result in mostly C's. Finally, he and his ilk (SBU chem department) want you to fail and crush your premed dreams.
good prof. just study the notes and do as many probs, as possible. No curve so the grade you get is what you get, no surprises.
Professor Lauher is a teacher you will either respond well to or not. At times, he favors students and cracks jokes on others. I recommend, and the TA's, to study the workshops, reviews past notes often and do the problems of the day - which are very important for part II exam. Good luck!
He is the most amazing prof that I have ever had. Don't listen to the naysayers. If you can do problems of the day, you can get an 80 on the exam w/o knowing anything. Unlike other profs, he is very direct and respects EFFORT. DO the PODS to show that you care and he will help you out in the end. He actually holds office hrs in CLC.
so first off let me say that i'm not even in his class, and i STILL go, because his class is so amazing. he's an incredible professor, and makes organic chemistry one of the most interesting thing's I have ever studied. you can tell he loves what he does, and he is extremely helpful if he knows you're not a complete idiot.
It's a hard subject to start with, but Lauher spoonfeeds you the material. Practice by doing PODs. They help you grasp the concept. Go to office hours-he's really nice; just don't wait until the last minute. Go over his lectures for exams and use the textbook for guidance. You don't have to read it. Do a practice exam as if you're really taking it.
He's not bad, the subject is. I like him more than Fowler, and he really loves what he teaches. He knows it can be hard, but he tries his best to explain it in a way we can all comprehend. I suggest that if you aren't doing too hot coming into Orgo pt. 2, do some tutoring. It works wonders. And practice, practice, practice!
Really cool guy, and at the end of the day, just wants everyone to know organic chem. I was two points shy of an A- for the final exam and final grade, and I got the A-. He's a fantastic teacher, been doing it for a while. As far as the class, you don't really have to closely read the textbook, just go to class, do the workshops, and POD's
Great professor. This course was honestly much easier than orgo 1. If you study hard and make sure you understand everything, you will suceed. Everything is straight forward and not impossible to get an A, i did it :p
better than fowler. I love this dude, textbook is used alot less than che 321, key to getting the A: make sure you pay attention in class!!! barely scraped an A- in o1 (shouldve gotten a b+ but got bumped up) but got almost a 98% in o2. YOU NEED TO BUST YOUR A$$!
I have Dr. Lauher as my CHE 321 recitation teacher, and he is incredible. He loves orgo and makes you love it too. His explanations are extremely clear and he cares about his students. Looking forward to having him for 326 next semester.
Professor Lauher is easily one of my favorite professors: down to earth, fair exams, and enthuasiastic. Attend his lectures, read the textbook, work the questions...and it's possible to get an A on the final and an A in the course. I did.
Wants you to learn, but has a funny way of showing it. Expects a lot out of his students, makes the tests extremely hard (the average hangs around 70s and sometimes dips to 50s). The class is not going to help your GPA in any way (beware premeds), but it will discipline you. Take it if it's your only science class and are willing to give your all.
He's an orgo prof, so he taught some parts of honors chem better than others, but he was, overall, a very good professor! Not the best, by any means, but he is very interesting and he doesn't mess around or trick students. Very straightforward, could be a tad more helpful, but definitely a great class to take and very insightful.
he does not want you to succeed. Hard exams, PODs are impossible, he discourages you from going to Toddtutor even though Todd has proven to help students. He told students that if they went to Todd he would make the test more difficult. So basically you are screwed. He acts like he cares but look at all the signs. avoid this guy if you can.
The person below me is probably just bad at chemistry. A lot of my friends and I haven't even opened the textbook and are getting As in his 326 class. You just need to do the problems he assigns each day and WATCH THE ECHOS. The textbook has too much useless material, and he tells you everything you need to know in class. class average is 70+
Wish there was a way to take a poll to see the thoughts of the students and not just the top students. 322 is a joke compared to his class. Lauher expects the world from undergrads. POD's are the sooo difficult when you factor that you have other classes to study for. The test are way too long for the time you have. Inconsistent grading as well.
Definitely the better orgo professor :)
A great teacher, but unmerciful in terms of grading. If you have never taken orgo in high school before do not take this, you will most likely fail.
I honestly dreaded organic chemistry and did very poorly in 321, but did very well in 326. His lectures are extremely helpful. Yes, his class is hard and yes, the tests are long but if you really studied hard you will do fine. The textbook is helpful but his echoes is honestly the better option if you are pressed for time.
Lauher took over for Koch when a bunch of us started failing CHE 152. When he took over, suddenly everything made sense! Great professor with genuine enthusiasm for the course. He's always willing to help his students. Chemistry is not an easy subject for most people so study and you'll be fine.
Class is not that hard if you study by yourself Read the textbook and preview Do not expect to learn much from him He only talks about the important part He jumps around chapters when he is teaching so it will be irritating when doing the quiz because you may have no idea where the hell does all those questions come from
He isn't a good professor at all. He jumps around a lot, doesn't teach well, his tests are hard, and he expects you to learn a lot by yourself from the textbook. But the textbook sucks. Try to avoid having him, but if you can't you better start looking around for tutors. And make sure you avoid the new chem sequence. Spend the extra semester.
I enjoyed his class so much. He's funny and very easy to talk to. His lectures are always fun just make sure you read the chapter beforehand or else you'll be lost. The clicker quizzes are mostly based on info from the text. Sometimes he strays from the topic and confuses everything but, all in all, Dr. Lauher is fun.
He's amazing. He really loves what he does and truly knows how to get students involved and thinking about organic chemistry
Nice man, but his teaching style is more confusing than clarifying--he doesn't explain concepts very clearly, and he peppers his tests with curveball questions. Attendance is a must, and I suggest you read the textbook, because it explains the material much better. Exams are quite hard, but if you do well on the final, you'll do well in the course.
Not clear in lecture at all. His pre class quizzes are also completely random and are hard to find answers for in the text book. Always uses clickers and has harder tests than previous professors for the course.
So here's the thing with Lauher, he's a really cool guy and outside of class he will help you with questions but during lecture, he never particularly gives a straight answer and I think overall, is a pretty poor lecturer.
Joseph Lauhrer seems like a good person even though his teaching style is horrendous. He stutters alot and doesn't get to the point during most of his lectures. I would recommend getting todd tutor and organic chemistry semester 1 by David Klein, and his textbook, if you want to do well in this course. Need to go to class for 60 clicker credits.
He is a very good teacher. He is also deeply religious. At the start of each class he would have us stand and hug the person to our right. Then we would stay standing and hold hands with the students on either side and recite a prayer to God to be good human beings and do well in the class. It is a very moving experience!
When he says there is no curve he means that there is no curve.
He tries very hard to be entertaining. Every Friday he comes in class dressed in a different costume. One time he came in as a clown with the big shoes and red nose. The whole class cracked up.
A great professor if you put in the effort!
He tries to teach but in my option fails. There isn't connection between lecture and tests. Everybody likes Friday because he comes in different outfits to be humorous . One time he was dresses as a hobo with tattered clothes. We all laughed.
Lauher knows what he's talking about. He knows the material and can explain it clearly to students. He's not afraid to answer questions if you ask him.
Lauher tries but he is one of those professors who can't get all the way down to a student's level. He tries to use technology and relate to students that way but he just can't explain concepts very well. He also wastes lecture time by showing us tricks instead of fundamentals.
So hard to follow along the lecture because you have no idea what part of the structure he is talking about unless you are a chemistry major. Buy a laser pointer and help out the students who want to learn.
This guy is the standard that all profs should be held to. Goes above and beyond in engaging and inspiring students. You will do yourself a favor if you participate and ask questions. He and carrico make organic chem a truly amazing class
He is a great guy but horrible lecturer. Rather than actually teaching the material, he just does examples and it doesn't help me at all
After Carrico leaves you develop an appreciation for Lauher's lecturing style. Both are great lecturers, but Lauher has a lot more experience with the material. If you wish to do well, the text before the class. It is okay if you're confused, class exists to smooth it out. Its unlikely you'll be confused after class, but if you are head to the CLC.
Really nice guy, obviously since it's organic chemistry it wasn't easy. His lectures weren't great and rarely provided any clarity on topics and he taught as if we were already familiar with the material. Undergrad TA's will save your life. Grading isn't tough though, do the homework (there isn't much)/show up and do average on tests for a solid B
He trashes the one tutoring service (Todd's) that everyone recommended for years that helped my brother get As and into med school and lucky for me I am using. On a side note he also throws weird parties with students, not sure what goes on but sounds inappropriate and gross!
I think Dr. Lauher is a great professor for the course. The textbook itself was pretty easy to understand; anything I didn't understand Dr. Lauher was able to explain in the lecture. The lectures are not just reiterations of the textbook, but actually full of examples of problems and such, which he goes through. Tests are tricky but doable.
All the past exams were easy then the ones he made for this semester were next level, which makes no sense. But regardless, he is not good at lecturing in the slightest. He's one of those profs who's too smart to teach I think. He doesn't explain anything in lecture and then the UGTAs pretty much teach the entire course, it's nuts.
He is a funny professor, but sometimes I feel like he does NOT teach, sometimes he does not talk about the clicker questions even though many people did it wrong. Go to your TAs, they will save your grade.
Honestly che321 is just awful no matter who is teaching it
Lauher is very nice and he tries his best to teach the course. He is quirky explains things decently well. However, if you want to study his lectures, none of the answers that were done in class will be on slides. This was a major blow to my studying. The textbook didn't help me a lot. He is flexible enough to curve well if you put in effort.
LOVE HIM! Hes amazing ! He really cares for his students and it shows. His lectures are very clear and like every other class you have to study for this class a lot. But overall hes amazing and one of the best professors Ive had the pleasure to take !
Very nice professor. Always there to help.
Prof. Lauher is a very nice professor who cares about his students. His lectures are easy to understand and he covers the concepts that will be in the exams and not extra useless stuff. This class is hard so stay on top of the homeworks they will help you study. The textbook is useless and his notes, recitations and office hours are enough
Professor Lauher is a very kind man. His tests are fair, but you should make sure you understand the concepts very well. He is lenient with the pre lecture/lecture grading, but make sure you do them or else he makes the test harder. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities throughout the semester and the class gets a small curve at the end.
This was probably the worst class I have taken at SBU. Professor Lauher doesn't lecture during lecture, he just stands at the front and talks at the class saying that we all should know what he's talking about already although he never taught it. Organic chemistry is already hard enough, and his teaching style just makes it even worse.
