If he weren't so mean, he'd make a good teacher. He is a very good English teacher but the way he teaches is just so mean. He makes easy things more difficult - for what - no purpose in this (except for making students' lives even more miserable).

Very intelligent man. Difficult teaching style for students to grasp, but only bc they aren't willing to. Personality is distant but shouldn't be confused with his ability to teach english. Distance doesn't make him a bad person or prof. He is a good man.

I have never hated English as much as when Marotta is teaching it. English was one of my favorite subjects until I got this guy. Learning was not enjoyable at all with him. DROP! DROP! DROP! Best decision of my life and it saved my average.

The worst teacher/professor/creature i have ever came across. Tests are nothing but impossible, tons to read, and DO NOT SPEAK or he'll cut your throat. he will eat you alive, then probably write a poem about it. Drop the course.

if u want ur gpa to drop take this class. this professor will not give more then a C+ only 1 person got a B the rest either failed or barely pasted. gives tons of reading . midterm and final are really hard everything in essay type form. out of all the classes you don't like drop out of this 1!if u
Yea this guy does not give you anything more than a C+...On one of my papers i had 1 small error and i got a B- He teaches right out of the book word for word. All my classmates also say he is crazzy hard. When we get assignments back Quote from everyone around me "here comes another C" Super Hard!!
Recommend don't taking this class if you want to keep your gpa up! His grading is rather difficult. Take another class.

TOO MUCH WORK! Quizes and papers and a research paper! Readings everynight. I thought this class was going to be fun but it is just tedious work. It is an interesting subject and the books he uses are great. But he is so boring! He never really says anything just paces back and forth-it will break your neck!
I took his class 10(!) years ago and now after finding this site I finally get my revenge. He belittled his weaker students and hammered you on your grades if you stood up to him. It should tell you enough that I remember him and what he was like after all this time. If you have a choice, don't bother.
I am a graduate of SJU and find it necessary to warn everyone about this guy. He is mean,cruel and makes the class alot harder than it is. He gives alot of assignments and picks them apart sentence by sentence. You cannot win with this guy no matter how hard you try. He calls on you in class and makes you feel stupid.
HE IS HORRIBLE!!! I am an "A" student and i couldn't get above an "D" by myself, when i finally went to my grandpa for help i get a "B", my grandfather is a former professor in ENG with a Doctorite in ENG!!! If he can't get an "A" how does anyone else have a chance?

Despite what others might say, esp. that one below about being an A studen and going to grandpa...blah blah blah, he is not bad. The class is easy to get an A if you just listen to him. The person never once listened to the teacher. I am an A student and I got an A in the class...That is why I am an A student. He is very straightforward
Tough but definately straightfoward teacher demads a lot from you but in the end pays off and your better for it if you stick with you will walk away smarter he is a really good teacher. I worked hard for my A
He is uncompromising,uncooperative and has no understanding.You'd better not have any emergencies while in his class! His grade bumped me out of the Honor Society Deans List and made me lose my scholarship because I had pnemonia. Even more he would not allow the dean to grant me a Pass/Fail two days after cut off date due to circumstances.Nightmare
dont take him. it's true highest grade you can get is C+ and you'll work very hard for it.

Very hard teacher. If you're looking for an easy class, DON'T take him. He gives a lot of reading and quizzes. His doesn't make his assignments clear, and then grades them horribly. He makes you feel stupid when you don't know an answer and likes to put you on the spot. He's boring and disrespectful.
The people saying that only lazy students think he's hard need to get their heads out of their butts. I'm a very good English student and always have been until I took him. No matter what I couldn't get higher than a B on anything. You have to read AND understand. You do have to work hard, but that doesn't guarantee you an "A".

He's a great professor and a great person. His assignements are not that difficult and the class isn't boring at all. However, he has no sympathy for stupid and/or complacent people who don't listen to him. So the big secret here is LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAYS.His midterm and final are somewhat hard, but he'll be linient if you are participatory.

Fair but tough. Be prepared to read and discuss the material. This is a teacher who wants to engage. You can't BS your way through the class or he will call you on it. In the end, you will come away with a better appreciation of literature.

Took his course online- great deal of reading- few essays, tough midterm and final but if you actually do the work and read the material, he is a fair grader. he's very smart and expects his students to actually participate.

This course requires a lot of readings and a few essays. The professor is very aloof and in-compassionate. He expects a lot from his students and grades harshly. When it comes to answering his questions, be prepare to know that the professor is ALWAYS right, because he will not accept your answer if it's no where close to his.

Before ripping this guy apart you have to give him the benefit of the doubt, we are talking about global literature here. With that being said, this professor is extremely tough. I'm your everyday average English student and I only received 2 A's this entire semester. In this class you basically have to be a "yes" man and agree with every one of his opinions. Not only do you have to agree with him but back your claim as he would like. Class is rather boring. In short, I would not suggest him.
So, this guy is mean. Be prepared when you walk in to be treated rudely. He really knows his stuff and if you can get him in a good mood you will enjoy the class. This Professor is not as bad as everyone portrays him to be. In the beginning, I did find the class extremely hard, but it's a college class ofcourse it's not going to be a walk in the park. Professor is a hard grader, but it is always possible to improve. All you have to do is study and do the work.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT take this professor. I cannot begin to explain how harsh of a grader he is. I have always been a great English student and produce A-worthy papers, but this professor will not give anyone an A. More than half the class failed his midterm and he provided no curve. Absolutely terrible and dull.
Save your self and do not take this professor. Extremely strict grader, assignments are unclear. Basically prepare to fail his class. The highest grade my classmates ever received in his class was a 70. Do not take this class unless you have no life, agree with everything he says, and read 24/7.
Dr. Marotta was a real funny guy. He is extremely intelligent. He will help you if you need help. Don't interrupt his class for stupid reasons because he almost certainly will rip you a new one.
I was suppose to take Prof. Bernard but it somehow I had to take Dr. Marotta. I like eng. class A LOT, always get straight A's, but taking his class this semester, I am definitely going to get a D. He's a SUPER strict grader. I know this is a college course class but I have taken college course eng. before and got all A's. Don't take this class.
Terribly boring professor who is not only a strict grader but as well as the most narrow minded it can get. If you do not agree with what he believes, you are automatically wrong and he does not have a nice way of conveying it. He is not clear on his assignments and I would never take his class again.
First of all I usually ace English, but until I took this class I did terrible. He's super strict when it comes to grading, I don't think he gave any As in my class, most of the grades I saw were Cs. The midterm and finals are all short answers and essays, lots of writing. No, I don't recommend taking this class.
Dr. Marotta is a great professor and his class is very interesting. Make sure to do the readings and you will do well. It is also important to go to class and participate during the lectures.
Don't take this class. He's a very tough grader and he's never there for you when you need him. Get ready to read and if you skip class you won't pass. He also is a lecture type of person so be prepared to listen to boring lectures. He also is very stubborn. If you have a chance to switch classes DO IT.

Professor Marotta was a great professor. He loved participation, and you really need to pay attention to how he analyzes poems and stories read in class. There are a few papers, tests, and pop quizzes, but keep in mind that this is a college English class: it's not going to be so easy. He was really kind to me when I asked him things after class.
I'm a chemistry and physics major and usually english is an ok subject in terms of being interesting. He is BORING He speaks SLOW He is VERY Repetitive He can DRAG 1 minute worth of lecture to 10. I REGRET TAKING HIS CLASS SO MUCH HARD GRADER So many other good professors, switch out of his class!! Im applying to mdphd, my gpa took a toll!
AWFUL. He's such a tough grader and offers little to no help. The readings consists of 20+ pages per class and he gives classes once a week. His midterm questions are so specific. He expects everyone to keep up and fails to acknowledge that we have other classes. He gives an attitude when you ask questions. Everyone in the class did bad!
Honestly, nice guy, but this class was the biggest waste of time ever. I regret taking it, I'm legitimately mad that I had to give up my time to take this class. If you read this save yourself some trouble and do not take this class.

We had reading to do after every class. He talks the entire class. Gave us multiple papers and was a harsh grader and not fair at all. He is so picky and picks at the smallest mistakes. If you don't use sources he likes then they are either not credible or not scholarly. He is rude and the class overall is super hard.

There were a lot of essays, but as long as you do the reading and pay attention in class, he's willing to meet you halfway. When you write your papers, keep in mind this is a college English class, two page summaries won't work anymore. One of the harder classes I've taken but rewarding at the end.
after reading his reviews I was scared to take his class but it was honestly 1 of the most average classes Ive ever taken.I was waiting for him to be really mean but he just wasn't,hes an old man who reads you stories all class,a little boring but the work inst hard at all.
