Teaches totally abstract stuff

He is very hard. Makes you read like 5 novels and do a book report on one of them. He tests on all the reading. His tests are hard. He confuses you by making the multiple choice questions into stories. Don't take him if you want an A!
He is such a great teacher! I don't know what the previous commenters were talking about! I will admit that he is hard, but I learned more from taking his class than any other history classes! Take his class if you want to learn!
sometimes makes you fall asleep very helpful with research paper definitely gives students the opportunity to do well in his class the tests are easy you can use info in the test for the essay
boring as hell and after every sentence he says mmmm kayyyyyyyyyyyy

BORING! Stay away from him. Tests are hard, unclear and on topics that were not even discussed.
Does not use a regular history book. Lectures have NOTHING to do with the material he gives you to read. His tests do not make sense and most of what he does attempt to "teach" is unclear. He does not offer help of any kind. Very boring class and I actually like history. Take a different instructor if you actually want to learn something. I did not learn much of anything from his class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! Test questions are weirdly worded, he goes out of his way to confuse students and assigns 3 books with one you have to write an long essay over.He is very boring and thinks he is funny. If you don't want to fail take my advice.
I disagree with most comments. Guys, keep in mind you are in COLLEGE!! Yes, his class is hard, but you LEARN! Isn't that why you are in college? If you are looking for an easy A class, then he is not your best choice. If you study hard, you can walk out with LOTS of good knowledge. If you want an excellent teacher, that cares, take his class.
I really enjoyed taking his class. As a matter of fact, I'm taking two more with him this semester. His classes are aimed more at the mature students who don't need their hand to be held all the way through. He's very clear on what he wants and is more than willing to help anyone if they need it. His discussions are VERY interesting.
That's right, we ARE in college so maybe the ones who can't step up to actually studying for a class should just drop out of school. If you are having trouble in a community college then what makes you think that you can make it in a huge University where there are 100+ students in a classroom with very little teacher-student interaction.
McGaughy is a hard teacher. But if you do not like to read, write, study, listen in class, etc, then maybe college is not for you.
I truly feel that if I could have Dr. McGaughy as a mentor I would. His intelligence is apparent, and each and every instruction is an inspiration to do better and take hold of my college career. Very clear and concise with individual thought rather than repeating intangible facts. Amazing!
I honestly think that Dr. McGaughy has done a wonderful job teaching history to me. I understand how and why it happened, class discussions are easy grades too, just speak up!! I won't lie, this class requires reading but it's an easy-going atmosphere and fun class!
Very nice teacher. He provides all the reference materials for papers. And for his honors class we get "reading days" which are days off from class, absolutely fine with me!!
To tell the truth, he is an awesome teacher if you want to actually LEARN about history. But if you wanna get that A or B, find another teacher, he will make you WORK for that GRADE!!!!
Honestly, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, Read, and Read! maybe you'll get an "A" if not Read, Read, Read, Read, Read somemore! lol. He is a good Instructor BUT you need to weigh do you want an "A" or do you want to know History! If you want an "A" you are going to hate him if you want to know history you'll love him!
He is a great teacher. He actually makes history fun. You can tell he enjoys his job. His books are boring and are confusing. His tests are hard!! But He gives you plenty of chances to pass. You Just have 4 grades. Great class, just good luck on the tests! The average of his tests are usually 55-65.
I really enjoyed this class. I felt his lectures were like telling a story. I was excited to go to the next class. I only read the summaries in the books and I passed with a B. Plus, he does NOT do term papers!!! That is awesome!
I love Dr McGaughy!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE! makes classes fun and interesting and makes you want to go to class! read the books, and study a bit..youll be fine! even if you are a huge slacker, take him! he gives plenty of chances to help your grade and you learn soooo much about life and yourself in general too. youll be better off for taking him!
The Exams are not accurate results to all the information students have obtained in class. The Exams veer towards how the student is able to take the information from the test and use it to pass the test, rather than using information that is given during lectures/reading book to prepare for the tests. The professor does himself injustice! Student’s d
How can I put this, there were only three tests counting the final and they were very, very hard. You have to take notes if you want to pass, but (and this is a really big but) he is awsome at teaching the class. Up till now I never appreciated history but his class made it extremely interesting. If you like history or want to learn then take him.
Loved this course! You will def. learn something new in this class. McGaughy is a great lecturer. I wish there were more profs like him. You will have to attend class and take notes, read the assigned books and be ready for discussion. This is not a slack off course, but an enriching one. Tests are MP & essay and can be tough. An A is possible.
McGaughy is AWESOME! Whether you love or hate History you will def. appreciate him. His lectures are out of this world, just like a story. You'll need to read the books and articles for discussion. He plays some interesting Hist Channel docs in this class. While his tests can be intimidating, don't let them get 2 u. Take excellent notes and study!
I appreciated that he takes time to explain things about college and transferring other than that he is not a good teacher, he is extremely A.D.D. and is easily frustrated his lectures are incoherent and boring and don't expect to get responses on emails because this teacher prefers you post personal information on webct in order to get an answer.
I was dreading history until I took his class. It's alot of work, but it's not hard to do at all. I took the class online and we didn't have any tests. I would definitely take his class again.
His lectures are like story time! I hate history and this man made me wanna change my major to history! his tests are hard, but you just have to study alot n not slack off. I have learned alot outta his class! I simply LOVE HIM!
The hardest course ever. Impossible tests and outrageous reading assignments. You really only need to take this class if you do it one its own and there is no other alternatives. Very stressful and generic feedback from the professor, you never know where you need to improve.
This class is challenging but not impossible! You do have to read three books, but they are worth it - this IS college after all. Prof tells you EXACTLY what to do. Lectures are interesting and he helps if you ask. HIghly recommended.
He uses a book that he wrote to teach his class. He barely uses the textbook. You have to almost memorize it in order to pass.
I took this class online it was cool lots of reading but not hard i made a B in the class and that was just paying attention not studying but make sure you read and keep up with the class never had to talk to him everything was pretty clear. I HAVE ALL THE BOOKS REQUIRED FOR HIS CLASS IF ANYONE WANTS TO BUY THEM [email protected]
Dr. McGaughy is a good teacher, but his class is difficult. He is very clear on the assigned readings and due dates on assignments,he guides you every step of the way to be successful in his class,it just takes effort to keep up.He makes lecture time fun by making history into a story, but it makes it a little hard to take notes
I would definitely take Dr. McGaughy again. He made history sound like stories, so I didn't lose interest. Yes, his tests are hard, but he gives you lots of chances to raise your grade. I learned about a lot more than just history, about how to study and college in general. You have to pay attention, but it's worth it.
His class is the hardest i've taken when you first start out, i mean yea he tries to say his class is easy but come on, he's the history professor, lectures are easy to follow but his tests come mostly from the books your assigned, if you cant memorize the books, your bound to miss about 15 of the 21 multiple choice questions on his test.
I liked the teacher and the topics he covered. I was very interested. However, I did not dedicate enough time to this class that I should have. But, in class, I liked when he would explain not only what historical figures did to improve things, but why. He uncovered parts of history that I had never learned.
Dr. McGaughy is very difficult, but it makes it that much more rewarding to get a good grade. He is very intelligent and explains history very well. If you're not willing to work, he will be equally unwilling to give you a good grade. Very impressive teacher overall.

he know what hes talking about and gives a clear point of view on history but theres like 3 books you have to read all at the same time, on diff subjs/people/events. very hard test.
Only take this guy if you like realy long and confusing mutipule choice questions (like a third of a page long)and a ton of reading. He uses one of his own books for the class and you will have to read all of it. He will however, give you a veiw on history that you won't hear anywhere else...you have to decide if he's right. ;)
Lost my book report, last week before school I finally got a grade. then day of the final (I take my tests in the testing center) he picked my test up before I even got to take my test. He said he had to give me a 0 for a grade until I could retest. After 2months of calling him and emailing him, I went to the board and he finally gave me my final.
Probably the best teacher I have ever encountered. however his exams are tough and listening to him is my best advice (Timed test!!! are excruciating). he will give you cheap books but many of them. GOOD LUCK
McGaughy's class kept me interested and always surprised me with the corrections of myths and misconceptions. To learn about what really happened intrigued me. This class kept me interested without the effort I had in other history classes.
Dr. McGaughy's course went more in depth on the themes and overall perspectives in history rather than the little details. I enjoyed the insightful lectures. I learned things about history I never knew before and I appreciated the humor used in the lectures. It helps keep my attention and helps me remember things easier.
Prof. McGaughy is an intelligent man that is passionate about history and does indeed know his stuff. That being said, You are required to study 2 text books and read an additional three books. The tests very heavily favored the books. Don't read=Don't pass. The work load in this class equals two others combine, if not more.
This class has too many books assigned to it. I feel like i am taking my masters in history. there is a major 1000 plus word history report due, on top of 3 extra books that have to be read in order to complete quizzes, exams and class discussions. if you take this class you should not any other classes scheduled because of so much reading material
McGaughy's course gave me the basic knowledge about history. I had no interest in history before taking this class but now I want to know more. I love the fact that the professor was very passionate about what he was teaching. I really enjoyed it when he was acting out some scene and told us jokes.
Class is interesting, but he makes it hardder than what it should be. Four our first exam, he made us read 6 chapters, 16 hand outs and read two other books; one for a group discussion, the onther one for a book review. At the end, many, many failed his exam. If you can, avoid this instructor. He is class is not worth it.
Best history class I have ever taken. He not only teaches you history, he gets you involved with it. I learned more from his class than any other history class I have taken.
took him for the summer. i was reading every day! almost 80 pages. but i most definitely learned A LOT with him. he gives plenty of work to even out your bad exams. he gets you involved and he explains everything.
Took his class online this fall and it wasn't all that hard. You do have to read 2 books (one he wrote himself) in addition to lecture notes which sometimes were not in order and made no sense. So ask questions! Only thing that was hard was not getting any kind of review or feedback on books from him before taking Book Exams.
I took this class thinking it would be easy like History my Jr. year of Highschool. I was wrong. Quizzes are easy but his book tests are ridiculous. If you send him Emails he responds rudely and has a god-complex.
Enjoyed the lectures because they were more like telling a story. This class is different because Dr. McGaughy treated everyone as adults or peers. He reflected his love for history through the ways he taught. Very animated with stories, definitions, and history in general.
This has been my favorite class. I liked the format of the class and the lectures. I liked how we didn't just read from a textbook. When I leave I actually feel smarter. I feel like I've actually learned a lot as opposed to having memorized stuff for a test and then forgetting it the next day.
If your looking for a blow-off class you are in the wrong place you will be expected to read 4 big books for this class. There is no textbook. So if you miss a lecture you are screwed. If you like history and really want to learn about history without the whitewash this is the prof. for you
He rambles on and on and on about historical DRAMA that is not on the test! TEST are impossible, multiple choice plus essay in only a 50 min. period of time! DIFFICULT.
His class is very interesting...but beware his tests are no joke. You can study all you want but his test are designed to make you think very hard. The question on the test are paragraphs long and he types them in a way that is designed for you to mess up.
WOW!!! I took this class in the summer. I received a C, I honestly worked my butt off for this class. Ive never came across a test so HARD! 30 out of 35 students failed his test, meaning they are almost IMPOSSIBLE.
I had just gotten out of high school and took this class over the summer to get credit. It was absolutely ridiculous because he expects you to read 4 books. It was STUPID! I got a B in the class, but I had to work for it. He rambles about history, and most of it is not even on the test! The MC part of the test is hard, but the essays aren't too bad
I took this class online and agree, there is a lot of reading. But the class was not hard, he gave you the material to read for the questions, and you have two book analysis. Overall this is a good class, just requires some work.
I took McGaughy's online course. The absolute best thing about his course is that you never have to go on campus. Everything is online. I was transferred to Los Angeles mid-semester and thought I had to drop, but you can take this class anywhere. If you have to work and go to school, this is the BEST course.
I learned a lot from the professor. He was informative and it made history easy to understand. He was always there to help me. I liked most when he lectured, that he gave examples and I could picture the time as if being in the moment. Tests were hard, but the Exam Forecast helped a lot. You just have to use it.
I am currently taking this class and it is just UGH! I thought that this Class was going to be one of my easy ones this semester considering tat history is always easy but beware this guy is no joke! dont to mention that amount of stuff you have to read!!!This class is very hard and i do not recommend to take it, unless you have no life and can stu
I never liked it before this, but this guys passion is history. I almost always felt engaged and liked the way the information was presented, not like I was being read to from a book, but like a story was being told, so I really learned it. He taught us a better way to prepare for and take tests, and he was always available for appointments.
This dude is a good speaker but his tests are nearly impossible! He raped my brain and mademe cry DONT TAKE THIS CLASS...even if people say all you have to do is listen..not true HE IS HARD!!!
This teacher is a great speaker and although he expects a lot from a student, as far as reading and tests go, it is in the best interest of the student. Most students don't take advantage of the fact that he is a lot of help if you just talk to him or shoot him an email. His test are pretty hard but it helps in test comprehension for the future.
Open to student questions, very knowledgeable and thorough. He tells you how to take the tests to pass, and outlines his lectures for effective note taking. He's a great orator and is not rediculous about essay grading. Overall, if you come willing to listen, work, read and study you will pass. This is college not highschool

The only thing I liked about him is his lecture!! but it is way off from his tests. His test is extremely hard!really very hard, more than half the class failed his tests. there are lotsssssssssss of reading! very strict! he doesnt like questions! and the worst thing is that you have 21 multiple choice questions, an essay in 50 min
He is a very tough instructor, however if you are willing to put forth the effort to do what he asks (readings, quizzes, and class discussions) anyone can pass. His class is designed so that 80% of the course grade is made up during the last six weeks of class. Very good orator and outlines his lecture in a way that makes it easy to take notes.
If you are exceptiing History you have another thing coming! This is senior english from hell. It all about writing book review after book review.
Had him for Texas history, his lectures are engaging and makes the class enjoyable and his book review paper is easy so it helps your grade but the tests are VERY hard, most questions are "blah blah for all of the following reasons EXCEPT" and it does get confusing.
This guy is hard as balls. Good speaker but pretty hard to understand. We didn't use the textbook but we used three other books that were interesting but its just too much reading. if you have time to read than go ahead. But in all honestly i deeply regret taking this effing class.

He is in essence, a truth seeker and a history detective dedicating his life work to dispelling and delivering truth to his students and those who listen to his word. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS, take the class seriously, and you will pass.
He loves history and loves teaching it more!! His class scared the crap out of me. I really thought I was going to fail. He drops so much stuff I got a B. His test are really hard. I never read for his class except the book he wrote.show up to discussions and he tells you what the essays are.follow directions on paper u'll get a 90% n it helps!:)
Easy..drops so much grades and discussions are very easy to et a alright grade..quizzes can be taken twice..very easy class
Please Please Do not take this man in the summer. Currently reading 3 books, one the size of a Harry Potter book. For a summer class? Save yourself!!
Mr. McGhaughy loves to teach history and is great doing it! I loved going to class. His stories are great. But those stories hardly helped on the test. Attend all discussions and he goes into detail for the essay part, and the test is based around that topic. he drops a lot of stuff and makes it easy to receive a passing grade. Tests r real hard!
His grading its tough but he's a really nice guy. He actually made history fun for me. Didn't participate on discussions, didn't study for tests, didn't read any of the three books assigned and passed with a B. He drops lots of grades. Do the book report and the quizzes online and you're safe. I do recommend him. Note: Follow instructions on tests!
DE Course: Zero instruction from instructor all reading material. Lots of weekly essay quizzes(11) two papers and two exams. No feedback on quizzes. ZERO feedback on first paper to improve for second paper. Lots of reading, time consuming. Slow on grading. Excellent selections in readings. Could be easy for those who have the time for the class.
Very fun to listen too. His stories are very FUNNY! He will kill you with his grading. Too many online quizzes to do also but other than that if you pay attention, for sure FOR SURE you'll pass.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I do not need someone to preach saying you're a college student, you're suppose to work hard..yes this is true. However, this class was frankly one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken in summer and I go to UT. This class is at a community college and it was difficult for me to even pass. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!
Very Passionate about history, amazing lectures but if you are not to prepare to work, then you shouldn't be in college. easy online work and his test have a pattern to them! the essays are straight from the test questions. I did not like history before i took his class, but I do now!
HARD! His tests are almost impossible to pass. In my class, the average amount of people that would pass each test was about 5. I studied for hours and hours and still made C's on all the tests, and I'm an A student. Not recommended, but if you take him then be ready to work.
I have always been a A student, in AP classes and have taken this course in HS (although my parents would pay for my test) so I thought it was going to be easy.... WRONG. the quizzes are a test of might, the test get easier as you go through the course but again HARD, the book essays are busy work just do what he says, the final is your REDEMPTION.
Very VERY difficult tests. Half of our class got 20s and 30s on the first test with only 1 person to make a B. I received C's on all the tests but that's because I was being too lazy to read. He knows history very well so don't try to BS him. You can learn a whole lot in this class. Do the work, study and you will be fine. Good professor.
He is a great strict professor gets the job done! Makes me motivated and he is really understanding. He really is a great instructor and makes his lectures very interestng. It's like a story being told instead of reading boring textbooks.
Do not take his class!!! His tests are very hard and he will have you do a book report on "his" book that he actually wrote, but doesn't want you to read it. I would never advise anyone to take his class.
Great instructor, very knowledgable and makes History very interesting. I have never liked History but I find myself very involved. The books chosen are great to see the different sides of views of people in history, a very good class and a funny and interesting teacher.
A solid professor, very knowledgeable and wise. Gives you plenty of opportunities to get a good grade. Hard to keep up with if you are a full-time student.
By JoJo- Solid Prof. Passionate and knowledgeable. Instruction is clear and easy to follow. Good notes are a must to pass. Pay attention. DO NOT goof off in class, you will be called out. A true professional. Tests and quizzes are online, final in class. Book reports are not hard, he gives a very helpful outline to follow.
Through the first of the semester I was worried I would fail, and I actually made a high B. I truly think he tries to weed the students out of his class early on that do not want to work. His class is hard, but he is absolutely clear on what he wants. I learned a lot but worked hard! If you do what he says you'll do well.
Interesting points about history, knowledgeable but difficult. slow to respond to emails, don't take summer class unless you have no job or other responsibilities and can just sit at home all day, forum discussions almost daily, make up your own quizzes (his job by the way) failed due to sending assignments via email that he said he did not receive
Dr. McGaughy "pronounced MaGoy", is VERY tough! The work is long and lengthy and you cannot BS your way through the class. Not advised for the weak. Don't think this will be an easy class for a heavy workload. He will have you read, read, read and he KNOWS HIS STUFF! He has wonderful lectures and can be pretty funny, but not at 8 am :). GOOD LUCK!
This class is very easy, but time consuming. He practically gives you the A if you're willing to do the work. He is also very particular when it comes to directions, but he's still a great professor relating his lesson to today's world.
Do not take his class unless you are majoring in history. This teacher was extremely hard on his examines. He is unapproachable and down right arrogant. If you want someone that makes history enjoyable try to get Hilary Bedford--she is outgoing and never a dull moment in her class.
Online class, 2 textbooks,3 more books for the 3 papers. There are NO tests but there are 3 "quizzes" Where you have to make up 60 questions about the online book. There is also weekly discussions. He is lenient regarding deadlines. He just extended the deadline of our second paper and gave feedback about the first so we can learn from our mistakes
I learned more than I ever thought I could about history. He challenged me that forced me to step up to the ball plate. I enjoyed his class. I was there to learn and boy did I learn. If you want a challenge, take him. I think he is the best history professor that I have ever taken.
MCGaughy is tough, but if you're willing to do the work he will definitely teach you a lot, and always help you if you need it. Be prepared for a lot of reading, but if you keep up you'll be golden. Not recommended for the weak.
He's very knowledgeable of history and I ended up learning a lot. Extremely respectful - and doesn't use textbooks. Instead, there are assigned readings. No final exam, just a research paper and group project at the end with class discussions throughout. Don't slack off; you have the entire semester to work on these so you'll do well if you try.
He always seemed annoyed when asked certain questions by students in my class, and came off as arrogant. Failed most of the class on our research papers and presentations, which are most of our grades since there isn't any tests or a final exam. Very hard grader, and required us to buy his book! Required multiple other books we never even touched.
You dont need a textbook for his class. I've taken him twice because I like the structure of his class. 5 class discussions (participation grade) No test or final just 1 research paper 50% of your grade and group presentation. A lot of lecture!! Basically you get what you put into this course.
TAKE HIM!!!!!!! Prior to taking his class I was not interested or excited due to comments on here but Professor McGaughy is a cool dude. Strict when it comes to attendance and the way he wants assignments done but overall super easy!!! ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP!! You get what you give!
Dr. Mcgaughys history class is an all lecture class, you must take notes if you want to pass.He knows his history and you will learn a lot if you just pay attention. Mcgaughy is a great teacher, very eloquent and helpful when you have questions on anything. I enjoyed and looked forward to every class meeting. Overall, he tells one heck of a story!!
Bla bla BLADE This guy is a joke.
Dr. McGaughy is very intelligent and explains his ideas ion detail. He is very hard to get a hold of at times. He does not grade and return papers in a timely manner. You do learn a lot in the course.
take notes, pay attention, do the work and ask questions and you will do just fine. great teacher you will learn a lot.
You don't have to buy a textbook. Instead, you buy about 5 books (one of which the he's the author of). If you think about it, he makes quite a profit each semester including both summer terms. His lectures are long, howver he doesn't give tests. When he begins talking about slavery he says "let's address in the elephant in the room"!! Wow...
There is a certain aura of arrogance surrounding this individual. There is no text book, just a series of historical books (Equivalent to a text book). Some of his classes are required to use a book written by him. He doesn't respond well to information contradicting the information which he has presented, no matter the sources.
He lectures alright. The grade was based mainly on a paper (50%). He gives "Class Discussions" instead of tests, the grade he assigns is subjective. I would not recommend this class due to the amount of uncertainty which went along with it. I found his unprofessional use of the word "stupid" to be irritating. (Required readings, by the way.)
This class isn't very hard. Just get ready to read. A lot of class discussions pertaining to the books. Yu will need to get 4 or 5 books for this class. I was feeling a little overwhelmed about how many books But we only been utilizing maybe 2 chapters from each one. The professor responds quickly and makes sure you understand.
This guy really knows his stuff. I learned a lot about the American Revolution. He even changed my perspective on a lot of things. He does have a bit of a temper, however, he sent pretty much the entire class out if they didn't bring a printout, which we didn't really even use. Other than that incident, great class.
Prof. McGaughy is hands down the best teacher I've ever had. He's really enthusiastic and re-sparked my love for history. I enjoyed his lectures and would take his class again! BUT you get what you put in. You read 5 books, have discussions over them, and the paper is 50% of the grade! There is also a group project! Awesome teacher, awesome class!!
I can't stress enough how easy this class was. McGaughy is SUPER helpful and is very clear about how he wants you to do things. There are no tests, only 4 essays over the 4 books and a bibliography essay. They are super easy and he gives you a template essay to put info in. The only hard thing is finding the thesis' for the essays. TAKE THIS CLASS!
McGaughy is the best history teacher I have ever had. He is easy to listen to in lecture, you have to take notes to pass. Requires you to read 5 books and discuss them, which is the equivalence to taking tests (as there are no written ones he gives). Midterm grade is a research paper on someonesomething in your major. Would definitely recommend!!
This class is honestly too easy. No tests; not too much reading. He makes his expectations abundantly clear for the essay and bibliography assignments and gives you a template. Take him!
Very long lectures! My class didn't have any tests or quizzes which was nice, but the reasearch paper was super detailed and hard to do correctly. The professor really didn't like me and I'm not sure why, seemed like it was always a chore to teach/makes you feel dumb for asking questions.
Dr. McGaughy is one of the BEST professors out there. His lectures involve just him, no power points ( So take LOTS of notes) , but it's quite interesting and fun to follow along. He makes the tests A LOT easier than most professors and he expects you to do well on the book reports (2) and document analysis's ( 12, super easy). TAKE HIM!!
No test or quizzes. BUT 4 book essays, 4 class discussions and an annotated bibliography. He gives you class discussion "study guides" and essay samples and outlines telling you exactly what he's looking for. No powerpoints, long lectures, no laptops/tablets. He's enthusiastic about history. Not an easy A
PLEASE!!!!DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! We had to write 4 book essays including 1 from his own written book, 4 reaction papers, and an annotated bibliography, all which are 3-5pages long. does not respond to emails in a timely manner, long lectures. i personally submitted my essays for online tutors to correct b4 submitting to him. i still got an F
He's a great professor if you love history and can analyze historical events. Instead of tests there was a 10 page research paper with an annotated bibliography, in-class book discussions, and a group presentation. I had the textbook from HIST 1302 and that helped a lot, but it's not required. No powerpoints. Long lectures.
Forget everything you know about writing a paper. He has his own format and if your works cited or footnotes are off you get an automatic zero on the paper which is 50% of your grade. It's an undergraduate course with graduate course standards.
He's a very anal person with anger problems, get ready to write allot of papers, that will be graded harshly. History isn't a hard subject but with him it will be. Just don't take his class unless you want your GPA to fall.
He is a very bad teacher. Have to write a lot of papers. Don't take him.
I took him for HIST 1301, 1302 & 2311. He has the easiest grading scale. If you miss more than 4 absences, he drops you a letter grade, so don't miss more than 4 classes, easy as that. I hope you like to read and write because there's a lot of it. As long as you actually try and put forth a sold effort, you will be fine.
he lectures, no powerpoints. there are 4 discussion and you have to talk at least once. we just had to write 5 short essays about different books, he provides the template for the essay. attendance matters. there are no tests/quizzes/final. if you hate history and just need the credit, take him.
Great, passionate professor who lectures off his mind with no PowerPoint! Impressive! Everything that will happen in that class is explained on the first day. Here is a breakdown explanation of what "so many papers" mean to some people. It's literally just one paper you have to write sooo. The class is slight work
he lectures, no powerpoint. there were supposed to be 4 discussions, but we only had 1 and you have to talk at least once. he keeps attendance. there was 1 research paper, he provided the template. there was 1 group project, super easy. if you hate history but need the credit, take him. it's not that bad. there are no tests/quizzes/final.
Don't take him
Great professor and person overall. Funny and love the way he puts together lectures. I will say he only does lectures, no power points or interactive lessons which would've been nice to have.
This class was terrible. We had to write a 10 page paper in strict format about Texas history that has relation to your major. Also lectures were all over the place and was hard to take notes. There are 3 discussion and everyone must speak or you get a 0. You only have 3 assignments and 1 power-point that you must dress up nice for. Not worth it.
There aren't that many things you have to turn in, its easy to pass the class. He makes himself ready to help and answer any questions you have. Great lecturer, he always makes sure that he knows what he is talking about and never fails to educate properly. There is a paper due, but it is a college class what do expect.
Grading is on 4 books with online and in class discussions. A major research paper is due @ the end of the semester. He gives a guided checklist to follow. If you make any mistake on the checklist it counts for MAJOR points. You can fail with 2 mistakes on the list. Very strict professor. Triple check your work. Cross your T's and dot your I's!
Amazing lecturer. Assigns the readings as homework, which are used with his lecture material for graded class discussions. Term paper is a research essay based on your major and the time period the class is about. Don't be lazy, and make sure you follow his directions carefully. Final exam is a slideshow about group interests during the time period
Mr. McGaughy is a great professor! His work is not at all-challenging or difficult, just make sure that you come to class on time and that you get your assignments done! When you get started on a major grade project, feel free to head down to his office for help.
you need to participate in the class for you to pass.
BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR
Amazing professor, hes tough but also understanding. Lectures are long and there are few grades! Dont procrastinate!!!
I was completing all my assignments diligently and attending all the lectures. However, I knew something was off when the professor wasn't putting grades on Canvas. It was only till after the Final Essay that we saw our real grade for the course. He expects students to be writing majors basically. I strongly advise you to pick a diff, Prof. Trust.
I should have read all of the comments before I grabbed this teacher... HE IS HORRIBLE! Look forward to when taking him for an online, 8 week class: he gave 8 REACTION PAPERS & 4 BOOK ESSAYS. The reaction papers are based on his lectures which all you have to do is listen and take notes and papers, thesis is work 50 pt/100, he grades heavy and bad
DO NOT take his class. you will regret it. maybe it's just me idk but I don't like his personality. he straight up annoys me
The worst I have had in my two years at HCC. Until him, I raved about the faculty and staff there. It is disappointing to see individuals like him grade students based on his perception. He is a subjective grader. I took this course to replace a previous grade of a "B". And received a "D". Glad I already took the course. Beware of this professor.
This is an awful professor at Houston Community College. Please be aware when taking any course taught by him. He is a subjective grader. His classes are unorganized, and he lectures all over the place, moving from one topic to the next. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE FROM HIM!
I failed his class, it was hard because he would want us to write about multiple books and not clear.
His lectures are mostly him yapping about what he likes to talk about-- He seems to like the sound of his voice. Furthermore, the discussions are harshly graded. I would participate actively ~5 times per discussion and would never break a 90/95 during the in-person discussions. Final paper is graded poorly; I curated my paper and got a 70.
Most of the lectures were just him rambling about what he wanted to talk about, and subtly trying to persuade students to take his political stances. Only 4 grades, 3 discussions and 1 essay. Essay is fine but discussions are a gamble with the grade, even if you participate multiple times. Took a month to get all my grades in as well. DO NOT TAKE!!
Professor McGaughy's class can be a real challenge. He likes to lecture on his own interests, making discussions tough. However, Unstuck study helped me prepare effectively. Overall, be ready to work hard.
Honestly, he was very nice when it came to helping us with our assignments and gave a lot of details on how to do them. He also graded lightly, but he also released assignments way too late. We had a last-minute change to our course syllabus which came out of nowhere and we had to read three books in a short amount of time to write papers on them.
Do not take this Peter griffin joke of class I missed one assignment and it screwed over everything thank you. he did not reply to his emails and he did not care that I attended a funeral and missed an assignment and literally had proof.
I've always been so good in history, and I had never ever been failed before!! He failed me only because I lost one assignment because I had a problem and couldn't complete the assignment. Also, how can you grade reaction paper? He is says write with honesty then he grade them 20/100!!!!!
