Ling knows his stuff. Can quote that entire course out at you at any time. I LOVED Real Analysis with him. He keeps you on your toes though, by giving an assignment a week. He is also, very clear, and gets the point across.

Joseph Ling is one of the easier profs for Math 249.. he makes introductory calculus at a basic level, so you don't have to worry about applying it too hardcore.

Dr. Ling is one of the best profs at U of C! He has won a number of teaching awards to date, and he deserves more. He makes Math clear and I really enjoyed coming to class! He is respectful of students and stops to explain when asked... great Prof!

I only had him for an hour a week, but I could still tell that he was a great teacher. He just knows how to teach Math. He goes at a steady rate and pauses to make sure you understand.

This guy is my saviour. I'm a student at UofMb. and our teachers suck pretty hard. I went from a D at the mid-term, doing their course, to a final grade of B by going through the examples on Lings website. I would've failed if it weren't for him.

went into final with 98%. finished course with a b. hardest final ever. mc quizzes always 2a,2b,2c,2d. mterm was just memorization from SEVERAL questions he gave. but, final was a killer. however, he was nice and funy

If you need CALC as one of your courses He's the best guy from my point of view. Quiz and Final are ALL MULTIPLE choices and you have so many past ones on the net to practice on. For the final he uses his past quizes and worksheets EXACTLY. Probably the best prof if ur weak at math

This guys quizzes were insane, and the midterm was not bad except for the question on related rate which was nothing like his examples. nice guy but his tests are soo damn hard. our last quiz our ta wished us luck cause it was sooo hard and almost everyone had to guess

Best prof,knows his stuff,neat and organized notes,very helpful.Quizes are worth studying for,not always similiar to the worksheet. He almost tells you whats on the midterm,final is hard but not if you studied properly, You will be the problem not him, so study hard and you'll indefinitly get an A.

HE is a great prof, explains all that u need to know, extremely neat notes. HE isnt the prof if u dont study and expect to do well, his tests are challenging but if you study there will be no problem at all his tests are all multiple choice too (not sure if they still are, this was 2 yrs ago). I recommend Dr. Ling if you want to learn a thing or 2.

It could be hard for someone that never took calculas and don't put a little bit of effort but what course isn't like that. He is one of the best calc prof out there. Good clarity, entertaining and one of the few prof who will spoon feed you. He tells you whats on the exam and most of the q's are straingt out from the examples he does in class.

Dr. Ling is a great teacher. He's great at explaining things and actually teaches. He made the extra 263 lecture interesting and straight forward. The assignments were fair and were almost always based on the lecture. He is an enthusiastic person and makes a class pretty enjoyable.

Dr.Ling is very good at getting important beginner calculus concepts across. Has a different approach to humor, and he is very algebra oriented. What a pro. I reccomend him for 249, and any other calculus course. quizzes are kind of hard..multiple choice out of 8!!

Easiest class thus far in my first year, Dr. Ling is definitely helpful, explains problems clearly and his midterm was easy. Quizzes are easy if you do the assignments which are also a breeze. Funny guy =]

Okay. No. Not an easy teacher, couldn't understand him. He was an alright over-all teacher but not good at helping students at least from who I talked to, I found it so hard I had to withdraw. I'd defiantely take a different professor next time.

Dr. Ling is a really good teacher. I have never taken calc before, and I totally get it now. BUT... the midterm came out of nowhere and we had a 50% class average. That's not good. He's very respectful to stupid questions during lectures but if you ask him anything after class he talks to you like you're retarded.

Great prof! Made calculus understandable with simplified interpretatons along with a great sence of humor. His tests were very fair, tells you exactly what will be on the test on his website. Study the examples from his text book and his notes and you'll do well.

Best Math prof ever!His notes are very organized with many examples done during the class. Quizzes,midterm,and final are fairly easy if you pay attention in class. Easy A if you listen and do some practice questions.

releases sample midterm a week ahead so you know how to do the problems that will be on the real test. Class average on midterm was 75%. A very funny guy, likes to make class laugh. Makes online handouts with questions,but no solutions, so you HAVE to go to class to do the problems! (although in the past, he included full solutions- not anymore!)

I love Dr Ling! He seems like the nicest guy and is always making the class laugh. He is also really good at simplifying the math so it's easy to comprehend. The practise midterms he posts are almost identical to the real ones! Sometimes you might be confused by a problem or concept and when he does it he makes it so clear and easy!

Lecture notes poor clarity, & don't always coincide with section he is trying to teach, but will actually show up elsewhere in text. WEBWORK assign & quizzes are odd questions very dif. from lecture/text material; learn from a tutor. Adds extra non-ciruculum units to an already heavy course. Because of him I feel U of C is very unprofessional

Terrible. Don't bother getting confused by going to class....just learn from the text. You can't answer any text nor assignment nor test questions based on what you get from lectures. If you want to do well, don't go to class, learn from the text, & get a tutor when you need help. This class will make you lose your head. Have fun! Not.

Ling would be an example of why U of C's ranking is dropping through the floor. It really doesn't matter how hard you try in this class, it's set up for a low mark. Class average 54%. I attended every lecture, & did every suggested text question, yet 21 marks of midterm involved something we had never encountered. (midterm out of 100 marks).

Always teaches class with a smile and tells the same MONSTER or U or WIGGLE jokes which keep me entertained! =) Ling is a very smart man and knows what he's doing. His notes are very neat and organized, although some webwork questions had nothing to do with what he taught in class =/ Midterm was fair but know what you're doing. 54% class average =(

Attendance is definitely mandatory in his class. His notes are worth it, there's super clear and he gives tons of examples. Plus he makes little jokes about things that keep the lecture light and bearable. Very hard midterm, but everything on it had been done in class. Overall good prof, but study hard for tests.

Midterm and final were directly from class material. Not easy but it's not difficult to do well if you pay attention in class and study hard! Ling makes jokes and tries to keep things interesting as possible. He is also BRILLIANT at what he does, which can equate in him going a little fast sometimes. Class avg low, BUT HE DROPPED THE SCALE!

Try going and asking him for help: he won't. As a course whose prerequisites are 2 first-year MATH courses he fails to teach you the principles and expects you to know EVERYTHING; he's very patronizing. The class average is so low you wonder why you even try. He doesn't care about you nor your success. Worst prof I've ever had, Loathsome Ling was.

Sit Good? Joe was my favorite prof in my winter term of my first year, if you gotta take math 249 go with Ling I know students that would come to his lecture even though they technically weren't in his section.

I had Ling for Honors Calc and even though he is difficult he's a pretty good teacher if you have time to learn everything. Generally he'll ease up if the class is finding his tests too hard. Also he is very interesting and class is always entertaining to attend.

Ling is personable and tries to make Calc entertaining - one must admire that! However, his 281 class is insanely hard and he doesn't have patience if you can't keep up. I had the marks to get into the class but definitely couldn't maintain them. I'd probably take a non-honors course of his because he's a good guy. But be warned, he moves quickly.

Dr. Ling was a very good teacher, just not real good at the support end of it. He did tell us just make no mistakes and aim higher! I think he is a good prof, you just need to put in the practice if you want to come close to passing

Pretty cool guy. Always made lecture fun and has a sense of humor. He does expect a lot though, so stay on top of this class by going through the examples in the book that he suggests. Read the text book before lecture so it settles in as well. Make sure you know the *very* latest material before going to his tests as it always shows up.

I thought he was horrible... He is extremely impatient with students who cannot keep up, and he somewhat encouraged me to drop out of his class. So I did and took MATH 251 instead, got 96%.

The midterm was hard. I thought he would scale it or make the final easier. NO AND NO. The COURSE is hard because of his tests. He is a good teacher but makes really hard tests. He really knows his stuff. I liked him as a person and teacher but not as a test writer. All I have to say is thank god I passed.

Very hard marker. I went up to him to ask for help once and he refused to help me because he said I should already know what was going on. 281 had no tutor's or T.A's, just him, so I couldn't get any help there either.

Good Prof. Follow along in classes, & do the ?s from the textbook, they are worth your time. He says the key to passing is practice, he ISN'T kidding. If you make sure you UNDERSTAND all WebWork ?s and the practice ?s from the book you should do fine. Many ppl just had the TAs answer ?'s for them and then wondered why they couldn't pass the exams.

This class is not for the faint of heart. If you find it hard, drop out of honors ASAP. It will save you a lot of grief. He's a good prof, but he expects you to know everything already learned in Math 30 and 31 by heart. Tons of proofs. Hated this class with a passion. But if you REALLY REALLY REALLY love math, go for it. Otherwise, DON'T DO IT!

I love this guy! He is hilarious and a really good teacher. His quiz questions are directly from webworks so just do webworks and you're all set. Final was a bit tricky but easy quizes and midterm helped boost my mark. Great prof!

Ling's class was very good until the final. Midterm and quizzes are easy. assignments are pretty hard and final was bruuuuutal. Final is 25 multi choice questions so youre pretty much screwed unlike writting a completely written final in another prof's class. AVOID HIM IF YOU WANT TO PASS

Love him! He's the cutest cheerful Calc teacher I've ever had, considering I've been in Intro Calc twice, with this being my third time. I definitely feel like even if it was my fault for not passing the first 2 times, he certainly is the reason why I'm doing so well now. With a new attitude and outlook on Calculus, I'd totally recommend him!

Funny little man ! He is by far the funniest math teacher! He cracks funny jokes! Goes fairly quick !Likes to give easy examples just practice on the textbook questions because his notes are just notes. PRACTICE and you will get good grades in his class!Jumps over charis to help you! Literally ! Very friendly! And well organized. great prof!

Very good prof. Able to explain difficult things in a nutshell. Crystal pronunciation. A bit harsh in marking. The course itself is hard, make sure you've taken all the prerequisites.

I like him as aperson & love his way of teaching. There are two problems that i had. The 1st 1 is he gives us things too fast & it's a bit hard to catch up in studying. The 2nd thing is the exams. He always have a must known part. In the mid there were 10Q if u get 8 of them right you get the mark but if less u don't & the final 8 & 6.It's not fair

LOVE HIM! Such a sweetheart. He really cares about the success of his students. If you understand the assignment questions in both the online and textbook version before the midterms/finals YOU WILL DO WELL. Don't bother with tutorials, not very useful. Know your "Must-know questions."

Dr. Ling is a very intelligent man. He knows his stuff. This class is focused on proving, so if you haven't taken Math271(intro to proofs) then this class will be extremely difficult. Assignments, midterms, and the final were taken out of the textbook. So its vital that you know follow and treat the textbook as if its your baby.

Nice person but his exams suck! The midterms are hard because most of the marks come from 3 written questions and if you get them wrong you pretty much failed. Only shows really easy examples then gives you ones you've never seen on the exams. I wouldn't recommend him.

Very smart prof, but definitely one of the harder math professors. He really demands precision and certainty, which can be frustrating since you are there to learn. Midterms were very fair, but the final was hard. The textbook was great for practice problems. He is willing to help if you make the effort. His exam reviews are excellent-- study them!

Super nice prof. Gives LOTS of practice quizzes and tests that really help you out. Well organized and prompt to answer emails. Also gives students many opportunities to snag some extra marks from participation and optional tests. Very willing to help if there are questions and is understanding of personal circumstances if you have to miss a quiz

Get lots of practice through the book. Work hard. If you need help go and see him in office hours. 1 on 1 he is very helpful and friendly. Submit assignments and come prepared for class ahead of time.

Dr. Ling is the best math prof I've had at the university so far. He's so enthusiastic and helpful all the time. And he's EXTREMELY knowledgeable. Go to lectures. His tests are somewhat hard but trust me, it's beneficial cause he prepares you for future classes. My favorite!!! Definitely recommend :)

Very nice prof. He's very enthusiastic and passionate about math. He tries to keep his students engaged and has a quirky sense of humour. The Midterms were easy but the final was super hard. They ended up modifying the grade scale for the class in order to help students pass.

Dr. Ling is the best! I'm terrible at math but I'm doing well in his class. He's funny and makes the class engaging. He posts all his lecture notes online so you can go over them if you missed something. He explains everything really clearly and is willing to explain things one on one if you need it.

As an instructor Dr.Ling was solid enough. I found him incredibly useful for the first 2/3 of the semester, but once Integrals came along I think he saw how much time we had left and rushed. Ended up sitting in another lecture for that part. Other than that, hard class, need to put lots of time into it. Midterms are easy.

Joseph Ling gave excellent notes and posted them on d2l after each class so catching up was no problem. He was entertaining, easy to listen to and while the midterms and exam were not easy they were fair. There was always a review session before an exam where he would explain precisely what would be on the test so there were never any surprises.

As someone who had never taken calculus in high school, I found Dr Ling was very good at explaining concepts in detail and in ways that were easy to understand. Assignments have eight questions and he randomly chooses four to mark, meaning you can be doing half the course completely wrong and have no idea until the midterm. Too lazy to do the work that he assigns to his students.

Dr. Ling is an amazing lecturer, he is really funny at times to make lecture interesting. But he is really fast when it comes to notes and I have a really hard time following but they are posted online afterwards. Ling is very helpful during office hours and willing to explain everything until you get it.

Dr. Ling is one of my favorite math professors. I don't know what it is about his lecturing style, but I never had trouble following his reasoning, even with difficult topics. He's friendly and his assignments and tests are fair. He posts lots and lots of old assignments, midterms and finals that prepare you very well for the tests.

Ling is a phenomenal lecturer, he's clear and engaging. He marks half of each assignment, but he posts the solutions so you can make sure you know what you're doing. I'd almost say I found this class too easy since he posts past exams, making tests predictable. I did still study a lot, knowing what's on the test isn't enough, understanding is key.

Dr. Ling was a fantastic professor. Even though the course was an 8am, it was much better than with my first professor. Friends from other teachers wanted to use my notes or the tricks he taught for his understanding. Highly recommended.

Great professor! Know's what he is talking about and love the way he runs his lectures! Expects you to do some reading on your own time but then does a bunch of examples in class (great system for math!) No surprises on the exams, exactly how he said it would be. Answer questions and teaches really well. First time i've ever loved math class!!

He emails the class to let them know that the assignment will take about 12 hours. Way to difficult for our level, and it took way more time then that. I dislike him because he expects his students to know more than he teaches and to do more work than he does in the course. He does not even mark all of the assignment questions. Terrible professor.

Great professor, even though he expected a lot for a beginners math class. All his notes are posted on D2L, and will let you fix the questions you did wrong on midterms. Assignments can be time consuming but he is very helpful. Tutorial wasn't helpful at all. Would definitely recommend him for any math class.

He expects way too much out of beginner's. Most of the students are in a Bachelor of Education Degree and this course is recommend to teach elementary mathematics. However nothing in this class was relevant to that. Either change the description or the professor. I found him judgmental.

100% would NOT recommend this class, he throws random stuff at you and expects you to know it for the final when you haven't done it in class. He is unhelpful, its his way or no way at all. Is this math class even real math? absolutely not. he thinks we're all math majors. My friends in 4th year ENGG didn't even understand the math he was teaching.

By far one of the worst professors ive ever had. This math class was for education majors not math majors and Dr. Ling didn't seem to understand. Assignments where extremely time consuming and difficult, midterm and exams where near impossible. Is not willing at all to give any extra help. 1010 do NOT recommend

Dr. Ling is a wonderful lecturer and is extremely nice. The practice exams are not written by him (and are riddled with errors) but if you ask him he'll help you through them. Be prepared to write fast though!

He teaches by example - making his lectures extremely beneficial. His tests are much like the examples done in class, and some questions were repeats from the practice exams. He is available if you have questions. He provides opportunity for bonus marks. He is also hilarious. However, like all math, you only learn through practice - do the work.

I really dread math, its one of my weaker subjects. However after taking it with Dr. Ling I've began to really enjoy it. He's a really good prof, he posts all his notes online after class which is helpful if you miss a class, or are unable to catch something in class. Midterm and final were not bad, but you must be willing to put in the work.

Uses example problems to teach the concepts which I found to be very effective. He puts questions similar or exactly the same as the ones used in class on the midterm and the final. Labs were helpful as they clarified concepts. I didn't go to any of the tutorials and I still did well in the class. I didn't take calculus in high school. Great Prof

Easy going prof, explains things well and does a lot of examples for each topic, instead of reading slides after slides like other profs. He has an accent but its not those accents that you cannot understand. He jokes around also, making the lecture not too boring for you!

Okay prof, but he goes through concepts really fast and taught Taylor polynomials in the last week. However, he makes good notes and always posts them online so you don't have to attend lectures. Beware the final... it was so brutal that they had to scale the grades up. Avoid if possible!

The course itself is difficult but he makes it a lot easier than it seems. He posts clear and concise notes online before class and goes through lots of examples in class. He makes a lot of jokes that keeps the mood upbeat. Midterms were straightforward but final was tough as a lot of the questions were based off the last week of classes.

He is a very nice, kind, unassuming teacher. He explains things thoroughly and breaks down difficult concepts. His class and tests are designed around helping you succeed. I really respect him and if I had more interest in mathematics I would go back to him in a heart beat. There were lots of assignments, and difficult topics, but they were fair.

He isnt a Bad prof, The course its self is indeed harder then Calc 1, The best thing is he is easy to talk to outside of class, everytime outside of office hours i went to see him for help, he is always willing to help, never was turned away, He does like to stop half way doing an example, mainly on questions that require earlier stuff involved

Mediocre prof overall, some people might have a hard time understanding his accent but his slides are pretty clear but he tends to stop in the middle of the question which is quite annoying. Course is definitely a step-up from 265 and the class average was pretty low. Final exam was curved.

Joseph Ling is a very good professor. He posts class notes and lab solutions on D2L. His notes are detailed. Almost all the mid-term and final questions are from lab sets and class examples. Be prepared, and it is easy to get A.

Dr. Ling is an excellent professor. He does a great job breaking complicated concepts down, and he does plenty of examples so that you understand the content! He has very detailed notes and seems like a nice guy. However, be prepared to put in blood, sweat & tears for this class. The course is labelled "Math Topics for Economics" however, nothing in the course is really related to economics. It is just a mix of calculus, linear math, & analysis with nothing to tie it to economics.

As an instructor and course coordinator Joseph rocks! Super caring and helps students from all sections. Really clear and knowledgable, writes things in a very structured and easily understood way. Posts all notes to d2l, but lectures are enjoyable. Good instruction and funny quips. Makes a non-math fan (program requirement) enjoy the course. Love!

Calculus can be tough but Ling does a good job at explaining the many concepts thoroughly and makes every lecture hilarious to attend. He does several example problems with us and writes his notes in an organized manner that are good enough to copy exactly.

Great prof, his notes are very detailed. He is the head of the math department so he makes up the exams. He posts the notes online but going to class helps as he gives more thorough explanations in class. Cracks jokes and makes class fun. Beware, the class is tough.

I love Ling. He essentially taught us in lecture everything we need for the midterms and the final was math 31 heavy. The questions for the midterms were from the assignments and the labs so if you show up and do the wileyplus assignments this class is easy.

This was my second go around at Calc 1, and what a difference. This is the most well organized course I have ever taken, the notes were amazing and saved me as I have a hard time focusing in lectures. The problem sets were well designed and there was a ton of support.

Bless his soul. went to his lectures even tho I wasn't in his section. He makes the lab problems/solutions and I'm sure the majority of the tests. He tells you what you need to know for exams, important concepts& explains them clearly, then goes over helpful examples in his lectures. Do the labs + past exams as tests questions are very similar

Despite the fact I disliked the Math 265 course, I appreciated Ling's positivity and great teaching skills. A lot of students struggle greatly in calculus, Ling understands this. As Course Coordinator he would send his classes motivating emails to keep students engaged and persistent. I would recommend Joseph Ling to any student taking on Calc 1.

Only a 3.8?Deserves higher. Clear lectures, if he is the course coordinator, all the proofs he does in class are the midterm "bonus questions". Funny and cares about the students, math 265 tests (if he is coordinator) you can get 110% due to "bonus", questions sometimes identical to the labs. Easy class, awesome prof, what more do you want?

His fast-paced and bringing concepts out of nowhere teaching style didn't work for me so I just used his notes posted online and self-taught. Make sure to do the lab set problems as these usually come up exactly on tests. Also, no I don't see him as respectful since he was quite rude during his office hours and yelled at me for asking a question.

Love Ling's teaching style. He's super organized and the structure of the course was very clear. He provides mountains of practice exams and past labs, which I love because it's the best way for me to prepare for tests. He might go fast, but he posts all of his notes online so you have the option of listening in class and getting the notes later.

Dr. Ling is a solid choice. His lectures may be heavy, but his tests are fair. Most of the material in tests, if not all, is straight from the lab practices and online assignments. He posts all of his notes on D2L after every class, but attending the lecture is not a bad idea since his explanations are concise. Practicing math problems is a must.

Didn't post notes online since he wasn't coordinating this one, so attendance is a must. Different style of lecture, he would present a problem and ask how we wanted to approach the proof. Definitely got more out of the class by participating and making suggestions. Quizzes and exams were almost exactly like the practices, so make sure to do them.

Probably one of the best course coordinators that you can get for any Math class! He posts pretty much all the past exams, so you'll have a lot of practice, and his exams always contain bonus marks. Class average was about 73% which is relatively high for a Calc II class.

Most fair class I have ever taken, not saying its an easy course but he has straight forward lectures, posts his notes online and gives a lot of practice tests and labs which are very similar to the actual tests. Go over the notes and do the practice provided and you will do well.

Joseph is an awesome calc prof. He provides midterms all the way back to 2008 for you to study. If you do all the suggested practice problems you will surely ace the class. He send super clear and personal emails, he will answer you question in detail.
