Taking his class now. All of the work that we do is online on "my math lab" under the esantafe account. He's a cool and funny teacher. He's very helpful and goes over material in focus groups. I would recommend him to anyone.
Taking this class now and I am not impressed at all. He goes way too fast and struggles to teach the subject. I am considering withdrawing because of how poor his teaching skills are. He is also mean and yells at his students. This is his first semester at Santa Fe and hopefully his last. DO NOT TAKE!
He teaches extremely basic college algebra in class, then assigns My Math Lab homework and quizzes that literally contain statistics level material. When a student asks a question or doesn't understand something, he becomes frustrated and condescending. I am seriously considering withdrawing, whether or not I get a refund.
If you want to pass this class find a teacher not an instructor. This guy is an instructor. He does not care about his sy=tudents and getting help is a joke. If you want to pass math and take this class good luck. End of story this guy sucks as a professor and does not help you learn.
This guy cannot teach and does not care about his students. He also likes to yell at people. STAY AWAY!!!
This professor sucks. He's incredibly boring and extremely strict. My friends who have him in his other classes also feel the same way. He doesn't seem to like students very much. I would definitely not recommend him to anybody.
Dont take this guy. He is very condescending.
If you have not read the other student comments believe them. This guy does not need to be teaching he just goes throught the motions. Extremley unhelpful with students and very disrespectful. I really hope techers and falculty read these. This guy needs a new job. If you want to learn math do not take this guy.
DO NOT TAKE! Enough said.
I unfortunately had the displeasure of having this guy try to teach me. Myself and many others in my class failed. If you read the comments believe them!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY!!!! If you want to learn math take someone else.
He was so helpful and really patient - there were some people in class that drove me nuts (skipping class and then demanding to be retaught the next day) and he handled it way better than I would've, and kept us all on track. the MML isn't as useful as 1033 though, so you really have to practice his worksheets
Really nice guy, very helpful. Bunch of whiners in my class. MML not so great, worksheets are what you need to study. If you get stuck, just go to his office!!
SAVE YOURSELVES!! Do not, I repeat do not take him! He is the worst professor ever. He expects you to know every example and do problems perfectly after he goes over the material for five minuets. He is rude and condescending.
I'm not the greatest when it comes to math. However, he explains the subject during focus group. If you don't get the problem you can always ask and he gladly goes over the it again. If you still don't understand the problem, he is very accessible during office hours. He is funny, and very patient. I would recommend his class to anyone.
He is very unhelpful, not a good teacher at all. He expects for you to know his work off hand once he teaches it the first time. I wouldn't recommend anyone to take his class.
He is not a good teacher at all, and He doesn't explain well. he teaches easily in the classroom, but when its time to do homework, quizes, and tests the challenges are much harder. I wouldnt recommend anyone to take his class. SAVE YOUR MONEY,and TIME!!!!
I had Mousel for MAC1105 and having failed this class in the prior semester because my last prof. was awful, I LOVED this class. He talks fast, but homework load is doable, tests are easy and he provides plenty of help outside of class. Just do the work and take notes, you'll do fine :)
Mr. Mousel is a very knowledgeable professor when it come to math. He makes the subject fun and clear, he makes sure you understand the subject before erasing it from the board. I highly recommend taking his class, he has such a great personality, not to mention that he is a hottie. Take his class, you will not regret it.
He's an okay teacher but he makes the class too intense by requiring a lot of studio time and quizzes. He isn't helpful when it comes to discussing grades. I would not recommend taking his class.
Semi-easy class. Does not explain information more than once. Tests/quizzes/homework MUCH harder than in-class work.
Mousel is an amazing teacher. I truly learned a lot from him. class was enjoyable and interesting, if I had to do it again I will take him. Yes you will need to study but he provides all the tools you need. Also, if you need to see him outside class he is always willing to help and explain the material in terms you'll understand.Best teacher EVER!!
He is the most boring lecturer that has ever lived. It makes it so hard to pay attention to what is coming out of his mouth. Also the group work is worth a lot of points so don't miss class.
Rude to students, no compromising on grading at all, very black-and-white grading. Bad at explaining things, I mostly had to teach myself from the book. You are expected to simply memorize and repeat what you see him do, but its hard to do that if you don't understand what is going on to start with. By far the worst teacher I have had.
Joseph Mousel was certainly the worst professor I've ever had at Santa Fe. His lectures do not cover new concepts, they simply are demonstrations of the exercises in the back of the book. His grading scale puts 80% of your grade based off of exams. He is extremely tough when grading exams, because partial credit is very difficult to achieve.
Mr. Mousel was so rude to his students when you would answer or ask questions. He would look at you and say "I just don't understand what you don't understand". He wasn't helpful and just condescending to his students. Don't take him.
He is really specific with his tests. He takes points of little stuff, like not putting x to the answer. Group activities are suppose to help you and he grades those like they're exams. You can be doing well on the online part of the class put if you fail exams and fail group activities you are failing the class. Don't TAKE HIM! I regret it.
It's a Math class. It seems like everyone that failed is blaming the teacher. Typical. No one is accountable for themselves anymore. I took him, it was just fine.
Professor Mousel is a GREAT professor. He is VERY clear in his lectures. On all his quizzes you can use your notes and your homework-because the quiz questions are your exact homework questions! he is kind and caring. I walked into trig thinking it was going to be really tough but this professor made it a breeze. TAKE HIM!!!
I got an A in the class. It is not hard to pass as long as you do your work. There is homework every week but is usually very short and easy, it wont take you more than 15 minutes to do.
He gives two "extra credit" assignments but I don't think they were really counted as extra. He was great at explaining everything and works homework problems to teach. Come early and he'll help you with problems you have. My only problem was that the final is 50% of your grade. And you have to do the homework, it's what is on the quiz.
One of the better math teachers I've had. I believe his bad rep stems mostly from his sternness (i.e.:don't expect to carry on a text conversation with your skank girlfriend while he's teaching), but that should not negate his prowess as a teacher. His tests are a bit more difficult than everything else, but if you work for it you'll do fine.
This is by far the worst professor I have ever taken. His lectures are hard to follow, and if you ask a question he makes you feel stupid. If you miss a class and can't make his office hours because you are a working adult, expect a 0 for what you missed.
Hard grader, lectures are not helpful, learn everything on your own, would never recommend this professor to anyone!!!
His Trig class was very easy to follow. He does not waste time with long boring lectures and jumps right into what you need to know as far as equations and specific strategies. A lot of in class examples to follow! If you show up and ask for help when you need it during his office hours(was always there an hour before class), you'll do great.10/10
Excellent Pre-Calc teacher. Same routine: Mostly "go at your own pace"-type class with homework (not graded), open-note quizzes (based off the the homework), worksheets, and exams to check progress. He teaches you what you need to know, why you need to know it, and how to use it; a little more, but no less. A very clear-cut approach to math.
This professor teaches very well, and he is very respectful. He teaches you just what it is going to come on the exams, even on the final, so there are no extra things that he will ask you to do if they are not important. I failed but because I didn't give enough from me. Would def take again
His idea of teaching is writing down everything the students say, then saying "that is if I did my arithmetic correctly" and "any questions on that". He makes condescending jokes and if the people in your group for projects are bad then expect your grade to drop dramatically. He didn't round my 89.4 up, and assigned 3 essays during the semester.
I assumed he would be a great professor because of the good responses on here.... TOTALLY WRONG. He has a serious temper issue, will answer your questions in a sarcastic dumb-founded tone. Very tough grader ! does not give extra credit and does not round final grades. I am great at math and I know a good professor when I see one and he is not one
He's not helpful.. I didn't learn much from him at all I had to pretty much teach myself. He is also VERY specific, I would not take again..
Kind hard don't skip if you want to pass
I took this class the semester after taking MAC1103 which I got an A in, I thought I would do well in this class as well. I was wrong. If you ask a question, he will talk to you like you're stupid and should already know the answer. He's a harsh grader and will take off points for anything. I don't recommend his class if you struggle in math
Professor Mousel was one of the most helpful math professors I have ever encountered. I am terrible at math but as long as you reach out to him he is willing to help. He gives good feedback and the quizzes are problems pulled straight from the homework. I plan on taking him for all of my other math courses because he was such a good professor.
For the most part I taught myself in this class, the in class lessons are mostly going over semi relevant problems that don't really help with homework. Tests are tough. Mousel himself has on and off days where he can come in pissy and not help or days where he is actually willing to help. Overall i'd recommend another teacher not him.
Do not, i repeat do not take this professor. It is basically a self taught class. He will write a problem on the board and wait till someone answers the question correctly. His tests are next to impossible with little help. Do yourself a favor and take someone else.
Joe was extremely accomadating outside of class for help. he was a tough grader on tests but went over the tests before class and made sure you had all of the tools to pass. If you listened and participated it's an easy A
I personally enjoyed the class despite my inability to grasp a lot of the topics.
Will look for any reason to take off points from your exams. Also he won't really teach the class but instead writes the problem on the board and waits for the class to answer it. If you ask a question he will make you feel stupid while sarcastically answering it.
Awesome teacher. He really cares about students learning as he teaches and always stops for questions. Really helpful and accessible outside of class. He usually helps out by giving extra points on tests. Pay attention to the lectures, do the homework and you should get an A.
Do not take PreCalc with him! He does not prepare for class at all! He gets there and tells you to start shooting some numbers (makes an equation) then waits for you to shout the answer. You don't want to ask questions because he makes you feel stupid or look stupid in the class. Tests are super hard and he does not teach anything!!!
He just wrote problems on the board and waited for us to verbally work through them. Homework was a pain.
He was awful to me, so rude and made me feel stupid for asking reasonable questions. He would just ask for numbers to make up problems then get irritated when the class didn't know the answer. Unless you already know how PreCal or Trig don't take his class.
Taking for both PreCalc and Trig he is VERY difficult. With Hurricane Irma it pushed our schedule back. He has rushed us thru all material & doesn't even care. No review for any exams. Teaches over time limit every class and makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. I taught myself college algebra and got an A, I'll be happy if I even pass..
Condescending. Extremely fast paced. No study guides.
Do yourself a favor and don't take this God forsaken class. Seriously, the worst teacher I have ever had. His voice is monotonous and boring. His lectures are horrible at best. If you don't understand something the first time, you're done son. His tests are harder than everything else. I don't know why Santa Fe would employ this man. Just don't.
Coming into this class i was already bad at Algebra and I genuinely feel like I was even worse by the end of this class. I received an F on HW after getting help from a tutor because i couldn't make it to his office hours. Very rude when you have questions. Doesn't know how to explain problems to where we can understand and waits for us to solve it
Im not the best in math and he does not care. Not a good combo... He doesnt help much and gives attitude when you ask questions on how to do something.
Didn't like him at first, I'll be honest. Seemed apathetic and pretty ruthless towards students. Now, I think he's a funny guy with a dry sense of humor, and if you pay attention and take time to do the homework, you'll do just fine. He may be monotone and sarcastic, but I enjoy his class and think he's very knowledgeable about what he's doing.
Professor Mousel is unnecessarily strict. The man is textbook heavy and teaches by using do it yourself methods. He puts a problem on the board and expects someone to know it before teaching how to do it. There are no review assignments before exams, youre on your own. His bonus for exams can be essays, or a definition. HW has questions not taught
A bit sarcastic to any students who ask him questions, but he will guide you through the process. He tends to assume you get the core concept so if you don't ask about it directly he won't explain it. The homework sometimes has things not covered in lectures. Can be strict about how he grades certain things. Wouldn't recommend, but not awful.
He is very sarcastic, can be rude at times. If you ask a dumb question, he will let you know by his response that is was dumb. He puts the important part of the textbook on the board and the rest is examples but sometimes this does not give you a full understanding of the topic. If you're not good at math, I don't recommend him.
Calc 1 with Mousel was mediocre. He's very sarcastic, and really doesn't take well to dumb questions. He assumes that you've mastered the pre-reqs of Pre-Calc and Trig, so he doesn't go over those things at all. I had him every Tuesday/Thursday and there was a quiz in his class every week, along with a lab. He doesn't simplify concepts.
If you are someone who has the "math gene" then this class should be mildly difficult. I however am not super sharp with math and found this class to be a nightmare. Mr. Mousel can be real hostile towards people like me or generally any one who asks questions (inside or outside of class). Take it if you must but beware, he is a sad, sad, man.
He does not teach. Puts problems on the board and expects you to do them. Trig tutors in the library and students who passed trig could not help me with the problems he would give. He is really mean if you do not understand and very sarcastic. Be careful going to office hours as he gets mad if you cant do it after he shows you how. DO NOT TAKE!!!!
Don't go into this class expecting to be handheld/instapass. The tests are actually brutal, the lectures are example-based (a boon for some, a curse for many), and quizzes/labs are weekly. If you learn well from example as opposed to guided lecture and are willing to suffer at the hands of a ruthless test maker, it's one hell of a fun class.
Grades test too specifically but if you ask him how he grades each type of question, tests should be easy
Lots of group projects at the end of lecture so attendance is important. Tests are 50% and final is 25% of grade so you're doing a lot of homework for not a lot of credit. But if you show up and do the math how he wants you to and do even half the homework the tests are easy. Wouldn't take again purely because I prefer a different teaching style.
Stay away from this Prof. at all costs. He makes the class much harder than it should be. For all his tests, he doesn't tell you what to study and if you don't study A LOT, then you will fail the tests. I study around 8-12 hours for each test and still average around a 70% on them.
Prof. Mousel seems to be a really good mathematician but a mediocre teacher. His tests are difficult but all of the work he hands out reflects the material. His class is not friendly to people who struggle with math. Hands out group work that heavily affects your grade, so show up. Not a good experience.
Professor Mousel is tough but fair. He is very clear on expectations. Test questions are exactly like in class examples of concepts. If you have questions or need help with concepts he will take time to help you understand. You just have to ask. It would be best to show up to class as a large portion of your grade includes in class assignments.
Professor Mousel is very sarcastic, has awful handwriting, and does the bare minimum with helping students. You have a group project almost every class and he barely answers questions your group may have. He also doesn't cover everything on HW or tests. He also moves very fast and expects you to already know everything. He made me hate school.
Online because of COVID but it wasn't bad. I had to teach myself most of it because I wasn't in class to ask questions right away. There were 3 tests, 1 final and a quiz every week. He grades very fast and if you do bad on his tests you can get around 20 extra points for showing work! it was a struggle for profs this semester but he did great. :)
Professor Mousel assumes you know the material already. He grades based off work shown. Very hard class unless you are familiar with Calculus already. Three-four homework assignments and a quiz each week. (4) Tests are proctored Answers questions quickly through email and will help you on a problem if you need it. Gives great feedback on work
His form of teaching involves giving brief notes on a section, then putting practice problems on the board and having the class solve them, if thats your style of learning or youve already taken trig/precalc and just need to jog your memory, then definitely sign up for Professor Mousels class.
Took him online for calc 2, HARDEST THING EVER, lecture notes terrible
Challenging class. He posts brief notes and gives weekly quizzes, DO THE QUIZZES. Tests are very hard He responds quickly to emails
Does not teaching in online lectures just solves problems and does not give a good explanation of how he has solved them. Exams are extremely hard. Trig is one of the easier math classes I have taken at Santa Fe and was one of the easier classes on my schedule and ended up being the most challenging. Avoid taking online with this professor.
Professor Mousel is a good professor in the way that you can ask questions and he will make sure you understand the material. He also has tons of office hours and is always accessible. The only reason I struggled in this class was because I got sick and wasn't able to come to class for a week. I emailed him asking for notes, but he didn't have any.
Prof. Mousel is a decent math professor, but don't want him teaching you high-level math. He tries to answer any question you have, but you're going to pay for asking the question because his tone with every answer will always make you feel stupid like the question is an inconvenience to him. I would only take him again if he was my only choice.
Professor Mousel has a sarcastic tone when answering questions that deterred me from participating in class. He answers emails promptly but I would strongly suggest attending office hours when you have questions. Exams are 70% of your grade and a comprehensive study guide is not available.
Grade is mostly based on tests. Tests are pretty straightforward as long as you study and do the assigned homework. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it will be hard to pass if you miss a lot of class. Pretty chill guy. I enjoyed this class.
Pretty chill professor, loves class participation. Rolls with jokes people make and sometimes makes his own. Sometimes rambles when answering questions. Picky grader, will take points off for missing equal signs n such. He blitzed through last half of calc 1. Had extra cred for doing homework early.
Great teacher, he makes sure you understand things thoroughly.
Took him for Calc 1 honors and he is the best math professor you can have. He really explains the material, grades fairly, and care about the students. He is also a great person. Do the homework, he has hard questions there that prepare you for the tests.
I took Calc 1 honors with him. Classes are nice, tests are not that hard, and the teacher appreciates your work and dedication. If you're going through a rough patch, just talk to him and he will help you out. I really enjoyed having him as my teacher and I would definitely take him again. Plus, a lot of extra credit if you do homework earlier.
I enjoyed having him as my professor. Highly recommended. Extra credit if you do homework earlier than expected.
explains the content of the lesson very well starting with the theory and then move on to actual examples , test are made up of roughly the same style of questions that are on quizzes and labs . The homework is not too much and you get 5% extra credit if you do it early on each hw. Beware of small details on test and quizzes will deduct points
MAC2312 Honors Very accessible outside of class and definitely wants you to succeed. Quizzes were two questions in 10 minutes and tests ranged from 7-12 questions. Do the homework before the quiz to succeed. Homework can be submitted a week late for 95% and 24h early for 105%. Relatively difficult class, and the lectures can feel long sometimes
This Professor Is the definition of bear minimum, during his lectures he misses important details in the textbook the exist to help the students remember how to solve problems and is overall unwelcoming to questions stating "this is prerequisite material". While you're in this class you will be teaching yourself through Youtube or Tutors. AVOID.
He teaches very efficiently, gives good tests, and the final was very reasonable! He is one of my favorite lecturers because of his style of lectures, which makes class entertaining and intriguing.
I'm doing very well in the class because I have prior knowledge of the material. However, if I didn't know what I was doing, sometimes he makes things harder the way he teaches it, when in fact there is a much easier way. Attendance isn't mandatory, but most classes there is a quiz on previous sections, so you need to be there to get that grade.
Mousel is a very tough professor. He will take points off for very minor things such as not labeling degrees in your work even if it was labeled in your answer. Attendance isn't mandatory but he has in class quizzes on homework from the night before most days so it basically is. He's a decent teacher but the class itself is very hard.
Mousel is an extremely tough grader and answers any questions in a sarcastic tone. Don't get me wrong, he will help you if you're stuck, but he'll make you feel like an idiot for asking while telling you it's prerequisite material. Glad to be taking someone else for Calculus 2.
I had a so/so experience in this class, while attendance isn't mandatory there is a quiz pretty much every class on the homework due the night before. He is a forgiving grader, but if you miss a quiz or test it is a zero with no exceptions. Each test has a straightforward bonus question that can pretty much replace a question in most cases.
Extremely harsh grader, I've had 20% taken off questions for not including equals signs in an otherwise correct (solution & reasoning-wise) answer. Also gets extremely impatient when you ask questions, as if you're expected to know all this beforehand. I will say he's pretty accessible out of class though.
I wouldn't take this class unless you're 100% confident in your math skills. I had to teach myself everything when i was in his class, which left me so behind. then he gave mini quizzes every class.. which will literally break ur grade! + he doesn't provide any study guides or literally any help for test!
There is a quiz almost every class, all of which require in depth knowledge of the homework material. Make sure you use office hours to go over questions missed on the tests. Sometimes his answers to questions can be condescending if they are about prerequisite material.
