Professional and articulate; didn't seem to ask much of us while at the same time giving us a lot. Good sense of humor and use of puns in lecture, too, which most people didn't pick up on because they were asleep. If you hate history, then you obviously won't be impressed with him; otherwise he's great.
Great teacher! I would highly recommend taking his online class. He very helpful. I learned ALOT! Thanks.
A wonderful history teacher and a very nice person. Easy to talk to on a personal level. Willing to help with class material and things outside of the material in the syllabus. Very comical and thorough. Highly, highly recommended.
myers was great. He told kind of corny jokes but he's a nice man. gives a lot of notes, but makes it up by giving tons of extra points on the test. Not bad to look at either!
He talkes like Matthew McConaughey he thinks he is the king the world
He's an awesome professor! Show up for his classes, take notes from his PowerPoints, skim his additional readings and getting an A should be cake. He sets you up to succeed by giving you all the information you'll need for the course online. I recommend taking any of his classes.
Very funny. I enjoyed his class a lot. His humor made the time go by quickly. Also his tests are great because he has a bonus question after every question. Highly recommended.
Awesome teacher! Makes learning about history fun becuase he puts it into an interesting manner. Takes all the usless crap out that you usually learn in history classes and actually teaches you about things that are interesting.
Interesting Class with an awesome professor who really cares that you succeed. A lot of info but this is college. Take all his courses.
Learned alot. Study and follow the advice he gives and a A is really possible. A little odd sometimes but a fun class.
Great teacher. Easy to learn from. Even easier tests. Funny guy too. It was a very interesting class. I highly recommend taking his classes
Attend class regularly and take notes. 99% of the things talked about in class and in the powerpoints are on the test. Every question has a bonus question, what more could you ask for? Extremely knowledgeable, comical and knows what the hell he's talking about. Show up and do the work, you'll pass!
Took him online for American History I and II very fair and very interesting guy. Just do your work and you'll be fine... as long as you can write well it's all short answers and essays.
Never been a fan of history. took african american hist w/ him & loved it and him. was skeptical first (cause he's white) but i dont regret it at all.taking him again for american hist. he's smart and actually cares. his jokes arent great, but he tries to liven things up for US! TAKE HIM if u want a GREAT history professor!
This guy is a great professor. A huge help in and out of class and has a stimulating method of delivering material. Print out the powerpoint slides and take notes, start the essays when he assigns them, and you'll have no problem in his class. The only way you won't do well is if YOU don't try.
Expectations are that you think about and know the material. Pretty Easy -- definitely an interesting class if not a little unconventional
Really cool teacher. Tests are easy. Split into an essay n multiple choice. Study the book for the tests n listen to him for the essays. He can go off on a rant but there entertaining. He really knows what he is talking about
Jeff is a great professor loves history. Test are recycled he has a database for them. Skim the chapters and you will pass. Read the chapters and you will get an A. He grades on an improvement scale meaning if he sees work improvement then you get a good grade. Enjoyed his class and teaching style, Can be an Easy A.
By far the best History Class I have ever taken. He made each class interesting and funny, and found ways to help us see events from different perspectives. Extremely helpful outside of class. Very smart, funny guy. Take him if you can even if history isn't your thing!
By far the greatest teacher I have ever had! He is the most knowledgeable teacher, and you can tell her really loves what he is doing. Very funny, very intelligent, and also very classy.
Mr. Myers is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He is serious about his work and you need to get your work done. He makes the class quite entertaining every time. You have to pay attention in class if you want to pass. The class is interesting and he makes it so much better. If you do your work it shouldn't be difficult.
Gave him a 5 on easiness because there is no 6. More than enough extra credit. Entertaining teacher, great guy. Could improve communication. Highly recommended.
If you do the work required, there should be no problem. Interesting class. Essays are a big part of the grade.
This is my second semester with Professor Myers. He is very knowledgable and explains everything very well. His lectures and tests show he really wants you to do well in his class. Hes laid back and entertaining. First professor I've had that made me actually like learning history :)
Fantastic teacher. Very enthusiastic and emotive during class lectures. Basically tells the story of American History in a great, engaging, entertaining way. Cool outside of class, too. Very funny.
One of the best professors at DCCC. Took this class online fall 2011 along with 3 other courses and received an “A”. He is very easy going and understanding; he gave a day or two to complete any incomplete assignments. His response regarding assignments and the midterm was very helpful and informative. I would highly recommend him to any student.
I do not reccommend taking his class, it is nothing but lectures and taking notes. Everyday that you will walk into his class their is no classwork assignments, its just powerpoint presentations. I fell asleep many times during his class. Grades are also based on online quizzes, exams and essays. DO NOT TAKE.
Had in twice in back to back semesters. Awesome Guy who clearly loves his job. If your a republican like me he'll rub you the wrong way at first but you get used to it. Essays are important, but the class is very fun and EASY if you like history.
He's not a bad professor just lectures a lot and goes off topic a lot. Notes are confusing a well because many times do not work well with the text.
awesome. took his class twice. majoring in history because of him. one of the greatest professors that school has ever seen. seriously cute too
Most of the recommendations are wrong. This teacher loves to make side jokes every 2 min. He will tell you to study on your own. He will give an online quiz and an essay and a in class test all at once. If you are a beginner who is looking to take a history class, do not take this guy.
Very helpful, and overall excellent teacher!
He is very knowledgeable, but smug. Prepare for your opinions to become obsolete. Much of what he says is false, and his arrogance can be overwhelming at times. He recently changed his entire teaching method due to negative remarks on this site. I wouldn't recommend. His prior methods were appropriate for a college, contrary to other ratings here.
Very pompous, and pretentious. Denounces other methods and opinions in favor of his own. Very passionate, but his opinion takes control and it can make for an overwhelming class session. His class isn't too hard, but the way he teaches can be discouraging for some; he is all over the place, and his tests can be different from what he teaches.
He's a pretty cool guy, and his theory regarding history is rock solid. Sadly, I knew all the material before the course, attended less than 5 times and got a solid B. Wish he taught a class I didn't know about.
I believe he is a good guy, with a good heart, but this class was extremely hard for me. I felt like we were given work and expected to know every date as though we were history majors. At the end i saw my growth and he got our best work bc he made us work very hard but this was very stressful for someone with a load of sciences.
Dr. Myers is an intelligent man who is among the more qualified to teach history at DCCC. Among the benefits of his class is his ability to teach students to perform at the "next level." Those who follow his suggestions should do more than fine.
This class was super hard for me. I literally had to memorize the ppts and my notes to get an A in this class. This class was very stressful for me considering it was only an introductory course.
Hands down, the best professor at DCCC. He makes the class absolutely hilarious by speaking his mind and what a brilliant mind about history he has.
The history course I took was accelerated but it never felt overwhelming. There was a good bit of reading but in terms of history textbooks it isn't at all dry. Dr. Myers loaded the course more towards essays and concepts rather than dates and tests. Good guy, good course, interesting material.
Really good class. Professor helps you understand material and then develop your own ideas in it. Lots of good discussion and interesting readings. If you want to learn, this is the class, and it really isn't that hard -- if yu follow the plan and get to class
Personality wise he is very funny. His tests are not hard but you definitely need to read from the text and assigned readings!! They are all multiple choice with one random bonus question each so pay attention to what he says in class. Essays are a little hard. All in all, good class good professor
very rude. would never take this class again. at least not with him as the professor.
he talks about things completley different from what is on his powerpoints and is far off from the topic. it doesn't help that the book is completely different from what hes teaching too. worst professor ive ever had. makes rude remarks and thinks he's so funny.
Really enjoyed the class. Plenty of topics and materials to go over, but what do you expect? have to be in class and prepared to think about stuff.
I've had Dr. Myers 3 times awesome teacher, the 1000 essays are a pain in the butt, but take good notes and read, the you should have no problems
He was one boring teacher to have, he lectures the whole time so beware. But honestly he really works with you on things. Sends back any papers to give you the chance to get a better grade, even writes you a novel on what you can write for his essays. He even gave me the chance to change my final grade when the course was way past over. Good guy
Super helpful. He lectures the entire time for the most part but it is very engaging. I loved taking his class and would definitely take another one if I could. The book was challenging to read but there are plenty of summaries online.
I don't understand some of the negative remarks on here. Joseph Meyers is a wonderful professor who gives good feedback which is very effective. He is willing to work with students one on one to help you pass the class. His lecture about the topic makes it more easier to pay attention and get engaged in class discussions.
He is a terrible professor who should not be teaching
He expects a lot of his students and by no means can you just breeze by in his class. I swear his feedback is written in code because it is never clear. He doesn't comment on how you did he just rambles on about the topic, basically writing the essay himself. Not a fan of the way he runs his class, his content, or his teaching style.
Do not take this professor his lectures make no sense towards what is actually on the test and essays. He expects you to write like you are an actual historian which I understand but I would be that if your in his class you do not have a PHD in writing about things nobody really cares about
Be prepared to write 3 essays, along with three exams. Other than that he is a good professor.
At first he kind of comes off as a jerk, but his online course is one of the few I've seen that opens up all assignments from day 1. This means you can work almost entirely at your own pace. (There's still due dates) This allowed me to do assignments ahead of time and lighten the load when other classes started getting busier. Be prepared to write
I took this class online AND accelerated. It was probably the best decision I made all semester. It requires you to do some reading of the book, and other articles provide, I strongly recommend using Chegg Study to help. The class was mostly open interpretation as long as you had strong, hard evidence. 10/10 would recommend.
take his online course you will have no chance you bread. Amount of reading is ridiculously. not caring about his students at all.
I had Dr. Meyers for Women's History and although he was a tough grader, a good grade is achievable. Be ready to do A LOT of reading and a handful of papers. He gives ample time in-between due dates, so the work is manageable. His papers and assignment questions are very in depth so you'll write A LOT . Discussions are xtra credit which was helpful
His class is straightforward. He lectures his own interpretation of history on his power point slides. You're expected to skim through textbook chapters and be able to participate in class. Each test has an essay you complete at home and hand in. Plenty of extra credit on each test that are taken from textbook readings.
Professor Myers is a good professor. Even though you have to write and read a lot, as long as you do the assignments/tests, you will pass the class. He isn't mean and he is straight to the point. Just make sure you are on top of it and hit the word requirement. He gives great feedback and there are 2 essays all semester.
One of my favorite professors at DCCC.
you definitely need your textbook for this class and trust when i say it: if you grab material from online and write about it he will not enjoy it and he will know. He definitely loves it when you pull from the textbook and are interactive with it. I also really enjoyed the fact that all the assignments were open and i could do them whenever.
The class is straightforward and he is very understanding. You definitely need your textbook and will need to read, but the quizzes and papers are interesting. Definitely cite information from textbooks/lectures in your final paper, mid-term paper, and homework assignments.
Professor Myers is a very good professor. His lectures are straightforward. As for the essays and assignments you don't really need to take notes, just make sure you look at the powerpoints, that's where you'll get all of the information. The class was very easy to pass.
This is a simple course, just read the textbook and answer the weekly assignments. The chapter quizzes are easy, and the assignments aren't very difficult even if you didn't read the textbook. He'll probably be able to tell though. Really boring class but straightforward and he wasn't a very tough grader either.
I'm so stressed out studying history. It is and will never be my strength and favorite subject. There are a lot of readings, and the assignments and essays are so hard for me. I burst into tears when doing them and I want to quit his class right away, but my condition (some stupid general requirements of school) did not allow me to do so.
Now is my time to write freely. I hate history at the beginning and my friends said his class could change my mind. Surely change, change from hate to extremely hate. Many readings and writings. 1 assignment has 3 to 4 questions, and each has to write at least 300 or 350 words. All of those are crazily hard to do and I was headache with them.
I believe he has great passion for history. He can be so energetic in grading every details. But, he does not know that not everyone love history like him and I am that one feeling exhausted about history. Get ready to read and write. You will have to read from textbook and many other sources he gives. The tests and assignments are difficult too.
His class is stressful if you are not interested in History. The assignments he gives are crazily hard, and you will have to read a lot to find the answer. But, it's not easy to find the answer, which takes me many weeks to finish. They are all in depth reading. I feel so depressed to study in this class and wish to finish it as soon as possible.
Earlier, my friend and I discuss about him and we all used to study in his class. I was so right to withdraw his class. Believe me guys, it gonna be hard for ya to pass the class 'cause his class is an advance of writing and reading. Despite good at it, the questions for ya are in-depth. Forget to mention, he is a tough grader. Good luck!
What he instructed in class does not help much for any assignments or tests. All to do is find answer in books and text with tears because the answers are all hidden. If cannot help understanding materials, please dont teach.
I read all of good reviews about him and decide to take his class. It's not a bad one, but making me stress and tired a lot. Many time I wonder if I can pass his class. I will recommend his class for you if you are interested in history. But if you are a lazy student, DO NOT. You will have to read and write A LOT. The requirements are strict too.
The questions themselves are so hard to answer. It does not relate to what he told in the class, in textbook, and in text. I'm stuck of ideas how to do his questions.
I know that his course is interpretation course. But when look at homework, the answers are not in book. His ppt not helpful at all b/c they're so short to understand what happen. I doubt reviews like "this is easy pass course" are not true b/c the questions are in depth and cannot find enough info in book. He requires use his materials.
it's a boring and tiring class. lecture heavy.
His questions have to be thought and found on books and lectures, but they are interesting. His teaching is clever in the way he let students relate to other stuffs. This way can help me remember about it more.
I was so impressed by his reply for my assignments. I'm sure that rare professors could be so patient and careful to write such long, knowledgeable, and meaningful answers like him. Thanks to his replies, I could understand more about the lessons. Now I understand why many people recommend me to study him. He has such great love for teaching.
There are 4 assignments. Each 3 or 4 questions. They are difficult. Many questions are not found in the book required in course. The powerpoint is too short that I couldn't understand. The essays are crazily hard and he is tough. I'll never take him again to suffer tiredness.
No deny that he has such passion for history. But his teaching is too much for a non-history major. Everything is way too hard. Tough graders for everything, even few tiny things. My grade is low although I spent time for them more than other subjects and confident about them. The highest grade in my class is and never be absolute point.
This is exactly the code course. He taught in A way and the assignments is B way. I dont get what his course is for. My mind like a mess. Think carefully, do you want to waste your time for this course?
I know his class is tough and much homework before attending. I dont care 'cause I believe that if I study hard, I'll get what I want. But, it's such a disaster. He's tough in tiny details. The questions are so in depth, some not relate much to what study: analyzing poem, historical writings, ... I read a lot. Worst class ever.
Hope that you guys are still alive when studying this class. I cant breath in his class 'cause of the works and essays we do. It's long, extreme depth and hard. He is tough too. His boring lectures cant save exhausting works he gives.
I'll never take him again.
Although he has great care for everyone, his course's too much for me. To be honest, I'm tired and hopeless when it comes to his class. His lectures are good, but the essays and his questions are far way for me. They're so difficult to work with. He's not an easy grader. I guess his courses are for deep, subtle people and for one love research.
The worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of taking a class with. Grades based on his own views. So much reading and the textbook is hard to find answers from for his long winded questions.
Boring lecture and tough in grades. Hard to know what he aims for. Many ridiculously hard assignments and essays. Only the book and his lectures cannot help you in proving your points although he says we look for answers in those. I bring my view points with facts and reasons in the book and he still not accept that. For God sake, RUN.
Great example of tough class. His lectures are ramble and confusing. The essays are extremely hard as he grades for every small details. He requires students to take all information in books and lectures, but also requires something more that is outside of the books and lectures in the essays. Limit students and force them to grow from nowhere.
Do not take this class. He is a horrible teacher as he just reads off a PowerPoint, and expects you to become a historian when answering his ridiculous homework questions.
I've taken three classes with Professor Myers and have had great experiences in each one. His lectures are great and he only assigns about 6 total writing assignments for each class. The people who rate him poorly go into his classes and don't do what is required. They take the class, do poorly because they don't care, and then blame the Professor.
Not everyone comes to the class with the desires to really learn history. Some students take the class because they have to (his. not their major). I'm sure that they need easy grader and fun class. His beginner level class could not meet this need. Take his class only when you want to really learn history deeply and want challenging.
Honestly, his class is not that bad. He almost mentions the answers for the questions in his lectures, so I don't find the assignments difficult. What make me stuck is the 2 tough essays (mid and final) because I have struggled a lot. This ruined my mood and feeling. It's easy to get B, but it's so hard to get A, and I have tried my best.
I loved this class and the professor! He gives you all the help you need if you simply put in effort and ask for help. If you just do the work and the assignments the class isn't that bad, classes are engaging if you let them be and he lays the assignments out simply. Gives lots of feedback on papers which is helpful
The class is ok for learning. Every works he gives need to read and think more, like you are a real historian, not a student. Read read read, think think think, and write write write, like a traditional class with boring atmosphere. It's not too bad, it's just that I look for inspired class with fun discussions to share knowledge, new ideas, ...
The professor will make you feel like you did not try hard enough for his deep questions and long essays. You can read the whole book, listen to his lectures, but still too hard and take a lot of time to finish the works. The class seems depressed and a few students care about this class.
He gave written assignments for every 2 weeks with 3-6 questions having to be 350 words. There was also 2 essays for a midterm and final each having to be 1000 words. He based a lot of the textbook and there were quizzes for almost every chapter each 10 questions multiple choice. lots of resources that you had to read. He was prompt with email.
Not a fan of him. He's pretty strict and grade by few things, so studying with him is kind of tired. One good thing is that you can do the assignment based on the book or lectures. However, I'm struggling with the 2 essays more, because this is the real challenge.
Never take this prof again. I don't feel any motivations for studying when I feel like being a dumb in his class. I think a lot for the essays, and all he did is refuse my idea, as if I'm writing nonsense. The assignments containing questions are not are not too hard, but they still need to discussing serious, or he will refuse your interpretation.
He cool
Tired.
Class requires work and thinking about a lot of material. Helped a lot with how to manage the course. I started with a bad grade but finished strong and Dr. Myers gave me the grade I finished with. It's a real college course
Easy Class. Everything is on powerpoint lots of bonus and extra credit
Second class with him. I took all of my history requirements with him, very fun and informative lectures. His work is easy and as long as you take good notes during the lectures you will succeed in his classes.
I don't have good experience with him, especially when english is my second language. He's a good and enthusiastic professor, but it's not easy to know what needs to focus. I have troubles with his assignments for finding clues in the book and lecture. His lecture seems fun, but he speaks really fast. The essays are also real challenge for me.
Very helpful
Professor Myers is one of the best professors ive had in college. Doesn't require a textbook (although helps if you have it), & gives detailed feedback on all assignments. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities & hes very knowledgable in the subject. He's laid back & as long as you do the work its an easy credit.
Wish this was in person. Very interesting with lots of feedback. Discussion forums bonus.
Not a fan of him for sure. Being stressful in his class, and feel not worth when spending so much efforts in his class. Really tough grader with a lot of assignments. Never take him again.
This class requires a lot of work, but the professor provides great feedback. Use unstuck ai alongside the textbook to prepare for the essays and quizzes. It's a challenging course, but worth it if you put in the effort.
Decent teacher, just didn't interface with him much throughout the course. He gave the readings and the work, and the work was TOUGH. Only negative experience I had with him was when one question had no content in the textbook pertaining to it. I asked him about this and he said that there's enough content.
What I can say is that as a history beginner, I have troubles with his class a lot. There're so many readings that is hard to understand the main points. The assignment questions are so hard, like, for example, you learn 1+1=2 in the book, but in the assignment, it's 3875x183752=? . You get what I mean? It's freak me out. Essays are tough too.
I spent more time on this class than my Psych and Eng combined. The coursework seems easy on first glance until you realize that he has a doctorate in American History (Civil War) He expects you to pick up on every minute detail to incorporate it in your essay which is essentially a dissertation. He turns a simple class into unnecessary stress.
