Good teacher, tests are hard, but manageable. Just study the notes over and over and you can do fine.
Doctor Nika loves pre-health advising, I know cause thats all he talks about in class. Not to bad at golf, has a 50 handcap, gots to work on thats BROTHER. Good teacher, funny guy, likes star wars WAYYYYYYYYYY to much... oh and I see him dressed as a Kligon at the Hilton alot... weird...JUST KIDDING!!!!!!
Awesome teacher! Genuinely wants students to do good AND learn. Not condescending during office hours, and very helpful and thorough. Nice and funny and pretty hot too. Tests aren't too bad, study his power point slides and you'll be fine. Gives some extra credit :)
Smart professor, pretty interesting to listen to, but takes attendance in the form of crappy little quizes that kill your grade if you are not there for them. If you have lab before lecture and are late your are screwed, and he does not care. High School anyone?

Horrible professor!!!!! Tests out of his notes only!!! if you take his course do not bother opening the book (or even buying it because you will not use it!!). He is horrible in explaining the material and many students found it hard to understand him. If you want an 'A' for the course make sure you stroke his ego as much as possible!!!!!!!!!
Good teacher that gives you a lot of extra credit to help pass. His exams are hard but he tests straight from his notes. The book was worthless and the lab was hard.
Memorize his notes and you will do fine in all his exams.Final is not cummulative. His attendance quizzes actually helped me in class...so try not to miss lecture. LAB is harder than lecture =[
He is a straightforward biology teacher, memorize your notes and this is a pretty easy class to get a A or B. His personality is dry, but he tries to help everybody giving extra credit on the test. He has to be one of the easier biology professors. Highly recommend.
THE MATERIAL FOR THIS CLASS IS CHALLENGING BUT DR. NIKA IS VERY GENEROUS. EXTRA CREDIT IS OFFERED FOR EACH EXAM. THERE ARE POP QUIZZES BUT AS LONG AS YOU GO TO CLASS YOU ARE SURE TO GET AN A OR B AVERAGE ON THEM. EXAMS ARE VERY FAIR AND HIS SLIDES ARE VERY HELPFUL. EXAM AVERAGES WERE VERY HIGH. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS COURSE!!
PROFESSOR NIKA IS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD. HE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING CLEARLY AND IF YOU STUDY JUST AND HOUR A DAY, EVERYDAY, THERE IS NO WAY YOU CANNOT REVCEIVE AND A/B. HIS SEX APPEAL MAKES IT HARD TO CONCENTRATE! BUT IF YOU EVER NEED ANY HELP, HE WILL SIT WITH YOU UNTIL YOU GET IT. TAKE HIM!!HE IS WORTH IT!!
Dr. Nika is one of the most efficient faculty members that the UNLV School of Life Sciences has to offer. He is always prepared for lecture, and willing to break out the dry erase markers. Unlike many professors, Dr. Nika actually draws diagrams on the board, and goes out of his way to explain concepts. Very engaging, very fun, and very intelligent
THE MATERIAL IN THIS CLASS IS DIFFICULT SO YOU SHOULD DEFINATELY GO TO CLASS BECAUSE DR. NIKA EXPLAINS EVERYTHING THOROUGHLY. EXAMS ARE ALSO CHALLENGING BUT FAIR. THERE ARE POP QUIZZES BUT YOU ARE PRETTY MUCH GUARANTEED AN A OR B IF YOU GO TO CLASS FOR THEM. DR. NIKA GAVE US LOADS OF EXTRA CREDIT AND AN EXTREMELY GENEROUS CURVE!!
Dr Nika is an easy A.His classes are exercises in memorization and you won't be challenged past that. This is something his pre-med worshipers love. The person who rated below says he's the best in the LS dept. News flash: he's not an active researcher, he's not in the LS department. He's a counselor with an ego problem. But as a lecturer he's ok.
Very Rude with students. Writes TOO small on board. Need a TELESCOPE to read it.NOT a GOOD teacher. Do not take his class unless you want a flunking grade.
This class teaches you a lot of useful information. It requires you to retain tons of info. The professor has a huge ego but, personality aside he does a great job teaching the information. There is a lot of EC credit given for little to nothing in exchange but, it is a biology course so you must STUDY!
Dr. Nika is a great professor. He is able to explain things in 20 different ways if he has to in order for you to understand. I had him for immunology and the material is very detailed and difficult, but he was great. He doesn't sugar coat anything and is straight forward, which gets mistaken for being rude at times. I would take the class again.
Dr. Nika is one of the best professors at UNLV. He is extremly thorough and really cares that everyone understands the material. I really appreciated the review sessions before every test. He was always prepared for class and posts grades in a timely manner. I would recommend any class that he teaches. Dr. Nika is a wonderful instructor.
BIOL 453 is the 1st biology class at UNLV that didn't put me to sleep. There is lots of extra credit provided, and he somehow makes the intricacy of immunology very interesting. Dr. Nika was rude to me once, but he's human, so other students who take offense to him being short-tempered because of his hectic schedule need to just stop being asinine
Dr. Nika got a little obnoxious at times, but I'm used to scientists being obnoxious. I was very comfortable with his teaching style and the material he covered.
Dr Nika made microbiology fun and easy to understand. The variety of diagrams he draws made the concepts that much easier to learn. His exams are extremely fair. Earning an A or a B is simple if you go to class and study the notes on a daily basis. Dr. Nika is one of the best professors I've ever had. I highly recommend him!
Pro: extra credit, generous with his time... Con: tends to talk in circles, office hours are another opportunity for him to lecture... Take him if he's your only choice, there are much better teachers, one that don't spend all there energy drawing on the white board and listen to you a little better.
Ignore any comment denigrating Dr. Nika's teaching style or effectiveness as they likely come from students lack appreciationg for quality teaching. He is clear and very thorough. Dr. Nika makes it applicable to pre-med, pre-dent, and pre-pharm students too.
He's a quick, efficient lecturer. Very generous with extra credit. Exams are based on the lecture notes and merely require memorization of the material. Be prepared to draw a diagrams a lot. Textbook can be a helpful reference, but is not needed.
Ignore the bad comments! People need to realize that they come to college to study and be challenged not to find which professor is easy; that is not learning. Dr. Nika is a great professor. Just go to class and follow his power points and you can't get lower than a B.
Let's be real. Nika's class isn't about learning immuno. It's about getting an A in a class that requires no thinking. If you know what's on the slides you get an A. Some people can't cram everything the night before. Some can. Find out what category you fall under and get ur A. As a person. I find him intolerable.
This is the most useless class ever.Dr. Nika does not care if you learn anything! So if you are one of those pre med kids that are happy to memorize useless information and dont care to understand or learn anything of value then take it.
Really cares about students' grades: over 30% worth of extra credit total toward exams. 46% of the class obtained an A on the cumulative final. Learned a lot without having to get the book. Very entertaining class: poor little rodents, lethal margarita, healthy fever, & don't play with a tsetse fly. To find out what these mean, take his class!
Dr. Nika is a great teacher that really wants student to succeed. Ignore anyone that says bad things about him. They are either intimidated or have never experienced the real world...news flash kids...not everything gets handed to you on a silver platter. If you study his power points you'll be just fine.
Dr. Nika is a great professor! I recommend him for Microbiology. All you need to do is study his lecture slides...MEMORIZE IT, attend class, do all of the extra credits b/c they increase your exam grades. Don't buy the book; you won't need it. If you do all of these, you won't get a grade lower than a B.
Learn everything Dr. Nika teaches. It will make your life in professional school much easier. Remember, most professors at professional schools are focused on research, not teaching, so try to appreciate a great teacher when you have one. Definitely take this class, and take it seriously.
He explains all the material in class really well. His exams are fair and straight from his slides. His does give in class quizzes for attendance but he also gives several "Stupid quizzes" to make up for the ones you missed or did poorly on. I'm not very good at micro but he explains it well enough to get an A or B in the class. Great teacher!
Good teacher. In this class, there is a lot of memorization. Total extra credit drags your final grade up 8%, and is easy to get. Sometimes, I have concerns about his behavior. just weird "go home!"... OK, I will go, I guess...
He goes through great lengths to explain complicated concepts.Be prepared to draw a lot of diagrams. He does pop quizzes because according to him "it will give you initiative to study" but he does offer stupid quizzes to make up for any of them that you did bad on. Memorize the slides for the test. He'll do everything possible to get you a B.
Finished this class with a solid A. Although a lot of ppl say it is, the class is not that easy. I had to put in a lot of studying (~3hr/day). It's A LOT to memorize. U also need to understand concepts for the tests like diff mouse experiments or what happens when things go wrong. It is def feasible to get an A tho & there's lots of extra credit
Extremely clear teaching style, as he says "very upfront" about his expectations. Doesn't require too much in depth thinking, but if you don't truly learn to apply the concepts, you'll never earn an A on the exams (more like a B or C). So it really gives students the ability to earn the grade they're willing to work for.Excellent instructor overall
Class is very straightforward. Just read given powerpoints, know concepts, and memorize and you'll get an A. Tests are straight from the powerpoints and he gives out extra credit on tests. Definitely best bio class I have taken with him.
Immunology was a very fun class! It is a lot of work, but Dr. Nika helps students as much as possible. All PowerPoints available online. Attend class (to hear info presented as well as for quizes). Do not put off studying. Tests all MC, including final. Final is comprehensive, but more focused on concepts and not a lot of specific details.
Excellent instructor with a really odd personality. Print out all the powerpoints and attend class for quizzes. Some people find the drawings pointless, but it helps trigger my memory when I study.
Virology is definitey an interesting subject. Dr. Nika gives you many opportunities to earn extra credit on his exams. Though don't be fooled into thinking this is an easy A, studying is essential to earn an A. Didn't need the textbook for this class. Just attend class and print out his powerpoints.
Very straightforward class and lots of opportunity for extra credit. You don't need the text book, the tests are based off of his power points and as long as you study those the tests are easy.
I was really scared of this class but found that it was actually enjoyable. It's a lot of information to process. The drawings help A LOT! When you take an exam if you remember the drawings it will jog your memory. His teaching style is good and he cares if you need help. Take advantage of office hours! Studied 30hrs weekly & got a B. Good luck!
Pros: many xtr credit are available, exam questions are based on lecture, don't have to buy a textbook (save money) Cons: odd personality, you should copy a lot of drawing and notes during the lecture
3 exams, 1 final and ~10 quizzes. Professor post ppts. during lecture but draws figures on board the entire time. The ppts. do not make sense if you do not attend class becuase there is alot of shorthand. No curve. Nice but serious professor. To pass study 30 hours a week!
Immuno is definitely one of my favorite classes. Dr. Nika gives a lot of opportunities to raise your grade and so flunking the class means you are either lazy or something is wrong with your study habits. Lecture notes are clear and concise and so you don't need to read the book. Pop quizzes made me stay on the top the lecture materials
Currently in Viro and Immuno. He is like a living textbook. I never fall asleep in his class. He talks fast and draws all the time. The drawings make a lot more sense when you study. I have gotten an A in every exam(both classes)and I studied for the quizzes and a few days prior to exam. You do not need to study 30 hours a week.
I'm pretty sure Nika simply diagrams everything as a show of his knowledge. We know you're smart... how about helping us learn? I personally find his teaching style unhelpful and find myself spending most of my study time for his class reviewing his slides. This has resulted in good grades.. without copying all of his insane diagrams in class!
Need to study, but not 30 hrs a day like people say. Exams are straight forward and offers a lot of extra credit. Very knowledgeable and draws a lot on the board while lecturing. I would recommend this professor.
I really enjoy Dr. Nika. The diagrams he draws on the white boards are great if you can actually follow along. This is a course where it's imperative that you stay current with studying! Don't get behind because there's a lot covered in each lecture. Don't let the first lecture scare you-- he tries to freak you out a little :P
I took him for Virology. This is probably the easiest upper division BIOL class I have taken ever. He is very knowledgeable about the subject matter. If you study the slides and draw/understand the whiteboard drawings, this should be a very easy A.
Great professor. Took the summer class and studied at least an hour every day. He does A LOT to help your grade, but you must work for it. Best professor I've had though!
Dr. Nika is an incredible professor. His exams are more than fair and he genuinely wants students to succeed and learn. His explanations are very clear and to the point. He actually TEACHES! classes are very interesting and you learn so much. I wish UNLV could duplicate him and have him teach all biology classes. Highly recommend above all others.
Nika is simply THE BEST. He teaches so well+Extra credit+curves+provides slides that cover everything. I learn SO MUCH with him. This rating is not fair, he deserves 5.0. Oh and for the person who says Nika shows off, he doesn't, he explains things for people who took upper div classes, and connect things w other classes, which helps ALOT.
Dr. Nika should give a seminar to all the other science professors at UNLV on how to teach. Immunology can be really tough but Dr. Nika really wants you to learn and and explains concepts the best way it can be explained. Sometimes it's hard to keep track of all the info especially in a summer class but he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities.
The best trait about Dr. Nika's teaching is the straightforwardness and clarity; everything on his slides is fair game on the exams, which are 50-60 MC questions; the textbook isn't necessary to pass the class but may aid in clarifying concepts. Go to class early since he sets up the questions for pop quizzes 5-10 minutes before class starts.
Outside from being the pre-health advisor, Dr. Nika is one of the best professors in the biology department. He wants everyone to succeed and provides many resources to accomplish that. His slides are very detailed and his exams mostly come from those slides. His pop quizzes are not difficult. He also provides a lot of extra credit. Do take him.
Dr. Nika definitely knows his materials well and knows how to teach. He draws a lot of diagrams on the board and they help A TON when you study, so prepare to bring a lot of of colored pens for easy and clear labels. He literally gives out 10% extra credits per exam, including the final. He talks fast most of the time and it is doable.
Immuno is a visual-based subject, it's hard to connect ideas based solely on text, but Nika draws diagrams to be easier to comprehend. It can get frantic to follow along because he blocks your view while talking, so it's better to take pictures afterwards, re-listen to audio & re-draw. Extra credit, pop quizzes, stupid quizzes, fair exams. No book.
The exams can be difficult if you haven't thoroughly read through his power points. Make sure you read and read and read his power points and make sure you understand the material. His lectures can be extremely dry and he will draw diagrams on the board but I found those to be useless. He gives extra credit on each exam so that can be helpful.
If you've taken Nika before, he hasn't changed his style for this new Biotechnology course (although it could change since it's "experimental"). His slides give every detail, so the book is not necessary. His exams are written in chronological order of his slides (so read them well) and is basically a large-format, process-of-elimination/MC test.
Memorizing slides B Memorizing slides + Attending lecture A
Out of all the professors for 453 only take him bc all his tests are MC but that doesn't make them any easier. Very unpredictable in terms of exams and pop quizzes. Has a syllabus but doesn't follow it. Pictures were useless for his exams/quizzes. Literally memorize his ppts if you have the time. He moved an exam EARLIER bc lec was AHEAD like what.
He talks fast, but he explains things well. He gives you a good idea of how things are done in research. His tests are very fair and straightforward. Some questions make you think like a researcher, but most are just basic definition questions. Class average for exams is typically a B. Can come across as "mean" but he is trying to help the students
It may not seem like it, but Nika does not want anyone to fail. MC exam and writes them so the average is around a B. Don't bother drawing his diagrams. Instead, record his lectures and write down everything he says. Exams are straight from powerpoint/ lecture and written in chronological order. Tough content but not at all impossible to get an A.
Dr. Nika is a good instructor. Exams are based off the lecture and questions are in order based on lecture presentation which is nice. Lots of application questions so it is important to know the ppt's extremely well. Can be funny at times. Lecture wasn't too bad for the course it was more the lab. Don't bother buying the book.
He doesnt listen to students when they tell him that his lecture style isnt helpful. Because of a bunch of drama, he decided to take away the extra credit, didnt curve, and kept his exams the same difficulty. I would never take a class with him again.
Dr. Nika was a fantastic professor. He continuously made connections from past lectures which made understanding the material super easy. I strongly recommend you study the powerpoints before any exam, they are very alike. You do not HAVE to go to lecture, but you will have a pop quiz once a week more or less, so you should go.
Type the lectures, that way you can listen to lecture recording on 2xs speed. It will save you time in the end. Pop quiz every other meeting. Hell throw curve balls like make them all false answers. He can be sensitive. Approach with caution. Make practice exams with the options: A & B, all of the above, none of the above. This will help a TON.
Okay professor. Not quite sure if his diagrams helped me or not, but I think you should at least understand them, or re-read his powerpoints. Four exams (final is NOT cumulative), and the questions are generally in order of each lecture. SO MANY POP QUIZZES, so make sure you stay up to date on the info and always have a scantron. No textbook needed
I took him over summer. He is an unfair grader because he won't hand you the scantrons in class and not even in office hours. He makes mistakes in grading scantrons and when u will point them out he gets mad. I got several of them right in exam 1, 2 and he didn't fix it. Avoid him. He is rude and gets easily offended if u ask him questions.
Joseph Nika is a very thorough professor. He loves lecturing and drawing out diagrams to help us learn and understand the tougher material. He gives a pop quiz at the end of each chapter he finishes so make sure you bring a scantron! His exams are very straightforward especially if you study the major points in his lecture powerpoint! Best Prof!
I took BIOL351 with Nika over the past summer and he was great, but Immunology was a completely different ball game. Apparently they recently changed the textbook so he was not very confident in what he was teaching, and he went over so many unnecessary topics. So, I decided to audit the class to save my grade instead of allowing him to experiment.
Do not take classes with this professor. He is rude, disrespectful, expects you to know everything, he acts like everyone is beneath him. He is extremely inconsiderate and does not teach us. He doodles for an hour and 15 minutes straight. You have to teach yourself in this class and he is absolutely no help .
says he will give you extra credit but if you ask him questions or clarification about it, hell take it awado not ask. Do not ask questions unless they make sense, or he'll embarrass you infront of everyone. Very awkward, disrespectful, tempered and treats the students like they are all idiots. scribbles diagram the whole time- just read the ppts.
Overall a very intelligent and competent professor. Any questions he will ask you will be on his powerpoints. His exams have straight forward questions with some synthesis and critical thinking thrown in. If you read the powerpoints and draw the diagrams then you will be fine. He can be mean at times, but he knows his stuff and is fair.
Pop quizzes are 10% of your grade but if you attend class regularly then you should get 10% because he gives quizzes where you get 10/10 for writing your name on a piece of paper. Basically a free 10% curve, super accessible during office hours and the drawings really help
Quizzes start 10 minutes before lecture start time and are collected at scheduled start time, no make ups. Always have $10 cash on hand to buy the 10% extra credit on exams, instead of curving you buy 10% or waste time summarizing 2 immuno research papers. Know all details, test questions look like this: a, b, c, d) all of the above, e) a+b only.
Quizzes are given 5 mins before class starts until 5 minutes after, you can get there early to have more time. T/F quizzes. He gives free quiz points if you show up and it replaces a bad grade (10% curve basically). Textbook was really hard but he's really helpful in office hours. He curves the test to the highest score. Really wants us to do well.
Really broad and general final (easy), All the materials is from the slides, doesn't require the textbook. He is helpful during office hours. He gives pop quizzes but they're T/F and only 10 questions.
Virology was a tough course but taking it with Nika is the way to go. Four exams, non cumulative final and pop quizzes with some bonus quizzes to balance out the pop quizzes. Having a background in genetics and cell phys certainly helps. Studying the ppts is sufficient for the exams which can be tricky and application based.
Virology turned out to be more genetics heavy than I anticipated, but still not bad. This class was a bit harder than Nika's other classes, his tests were a little more specific but nothing crazy. Book doesn't match the material so don't waste your time. Lecture is important because it clarifies his vague slides. Always think of the bigger picture.
Uncaring, boring, rude. Answers questions hastily and doesn't care if the student actually understands. His lectures are boring and over-complicated, his handwriting illegible. He starts class before the time it's actually supposed to begin to give random quizzes that finish 3 min into the class. His exams are confusing and have errors.
Hard to understand, you're better off teaching yourself the material, the diagrams he draws are a mess and hard to read. Starts class before start time. Makes difficult material even more difficult. Confusing, unapproachable, not helpful. Does not know how to teach students in a clear way.
He is very difficult to understand. He does not care if we understand the material. He rather draw despite it being illegible. Take a different professor whose more straightforward.
He rushes his lectures and talks too fast. He gets mad when too many students are asking too many questions. His material is very difficult to learn if you only listen to him. I had to teach myself everything, but I still don't do well on his quizzes or exams.
Dr. Nika's classes are tough, but he really gives his students many, many opportunities to get a better grade. Didn't use the textbook, strictly studied from his slides. He will have a pop quiz once a week, so make sure you show up. He also will sometimes give EC quizzes which really helped.
Professor Nika's bio 196 is a introductory level class to general biology it is heavy textbook based and he makes his own slides. People would stick to his slides and do fine on exams, but reading the textbook does help. He talks supper fast and loves drawing diagrams. Helpful for visual learners. Study hard for the tests, the average is not high.
Take Nika for 196. This class was challenging and textbook heavy, but studying only from the slides are sufficient. Lectures were fast paced. Studying everyday is necessary. Weed out class, so there's going to be a lot of people that realize they don't have proper study habits and blame it on the professor. Clear exams with no tough conceptual q's.
Don't think he's a bad professor just because the subject is difficult. he truly does everything in his reach to help students succeed. He has three exams with 60 MC and a final 120 MC. He curves so that the average will be around C/B and holds review sessions every two weeks. also has very accessible office hours. put in the effort and you'll pass
Many of the exam questions (multiple choice) comes from the lecture slides and he writes the diagram on broad. Don't brother coping the diagram. There are often pop quizzes that are T/F from last lecture or bonus quizzes which is mainly your name. Pop quizes can easily bring the grade up, but he does not curve unless he done a mistake on the exam.
He has about 10 pop quizzes. Online HW is tedious but doable. He answers q's in is lect. unlike Utz. Doesn't read off screen. He draws pics to demo visually. Doesn't give out his old exams. & won't give back ur exams. If ur thinking of university frist, go college-the prof. have time for u & ur q's & they give back ur exams & their old exams too
Dr. Nika is a great and very straightforward professor. His test questions are majorly based on his slides; the powerpoints and lectures are all you need to succeed. His test questions are direct and do not try to completely confuse you, unlike those of other professors. There's a lot of material to cover, but with studying, an A is attainable!!
Dr Nika knows the subject extremely well. His slides are everything you need for exams, but his diagrams and explanations in lecture give a coherent and in depth explanation connecting all the material. So Id recommend showing up if you actually love bio and have the time.
He is a great professor and even his tests are from direct powerpoints but still it's a hard class because his lecture slides are a lot. Some lecture slide has 75 slides! It's time-consuming. If you have good memory than you will be fine
Dr. Nika is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable and thorough in his explanations. Even with the shift to online learning, he continued to provide us with great lectures. He does do pop quizzes but as long as you show up and take them, you should be fine since he also has bonus quizzes that will replace quizzes that you performed poorly on.
I took biotechnology over the summer for 5 weeks. Just watched the lectures and read the slides. He gets most of his test material from the lecture which is so much better then searching for it in a textbook.
I really enjoyed Dr. Nikas class. He is very knowledgeable on the topics he teaches and explains things thoroughly. His PowerPoints are extremely helpful. Attendance is mandatory to take the pop quizzes and bonuss quizzes which really help your grade. As long as you put in effort and show up you will get a good grade.
Sometimes I wish that this virus can just end me so that I no longer have to memorize his dumb and lengthy lecture slides. All you really have to do is memorize his slides. Don't even worry about learning anything! Use quizlet, note cards, or whatever you have to do to memorize everything. Good luck with his monochrome and unfunny personality!
I wish I had something positive to say about this class or teaching styles demonstrated for it. Dr. Nika has a tendency to overcomplicate concepts and topics.. his lectures are him talking for an hour straight with little to no explanation and drawings that are hard to interpret. Look up Youtube videos to help you out, its the only thing helping me
There are professors that care about your grades, and then there are professors like Prof. Nika. I wish he was a bit more understanding with all that's going on in this world and with how he teaches the class. 200+ lecture slides are not possible for memorization. Pop quizzes are intended to fail students . count the ums and uhs, he says it a lot
Quite possibly one of the worst professors at UNLV. Doesnt care about his students or their success. I wish there was another professor to take, but this lazy guy is your only option. Doesnt even care enough to make study guides, and says his 50 slide PowerPoints should be used as your study guides. Gives pop quizzes that are useless for learning
This class has added nothing but stress into my life. I understand courses are meant to be challenging, but this class is beyond that. The professor can really make or break this course. You'll be spending all of your time memorizing slides if you take his course.
This class is based only on quizzes and tests, which wouldn't be a problem if they weren't based completely on lengthy powerpoints. There is no point in watching his lecture live as he only reads off the powerpoint and draws diagrams that will not really help you on the tests.
This course requires a lot of self-learning. There are 4 exams & random pop quizzes. What helped me was creating summary pages for each PPT, with main points (e.g., synthesis, genes and functions, processes) & studying those religiously. Nika isnt a hard professor, he doesnt feed answers though so build understanding first & then ask questions.
Exams are heavily based on ppts, if you memorize the slides you will be good, just takes a lot of time, he does not add tricky questions, very straightforward . Pop quizzes help you stay on track since they are based on previous lecture. more memorization than processes. ask questions during office hours not during lecture.
Tests are straight forward and actually follow what is lectured. Test questions very specific, easy quizzes, but does give bonus quizzes. Very knowledgeable and approachable. Dreaded taking it online but having him as the professor had made it wonderful!
I was really looking forward to this class and was so disappointed. He had a bad attitude, draws diagrams that never even ended up being on exams, and emphasizes the specifics before giving a proper overview of the subject. I was increasingly frustrated because the lab was so interesting and this class was horrible. Will not take him again!
The stress this class has caused me is beyond profound. I am more worried about my grade in my class than I was going to Afghanistan to participate in a war. His lectures are useless, will not provide help to students and good luck memorizing his 200+ pages of PowerPoints. I prayed everyday 1 of his germs we discussed would end my suffering.
You don't need a book because he diagrams everything for the class. He is a fair grader and gives extra credit quizzes to replace low scores. He really wants students to succeed and provides powerpoints and visual aids to help with different learning styles. I am taking him again next semester! One of the best professors by far!
Dr. Nika is very straightforward from the very beginning. I have taken him time and time again because all of his classes are structured the same way. I appreciate the pop quizzes he gives for repetition and the easy quizzes that take up previous bad quizzes. Easily an extra 10% boost to your grade. Study the slides religiously and you will do well
If you are willing to put in the time, you can make an A. I made Quizlets from his powerpoints, watched lectures twice, and used the textbook and YouTube if a concept was still fuzzy. I think this class would have been much better in person. Watch out for the lab final!
Professor Nika is not as bad as some are saying. He's really clear with what he expects for his class. Considering everything was online, I'm not sure if that impacted his teaching style, but it was a lot of learning. Lockdown browser and camera on. His tests were literally based on his powerpoints though.
Dr. Nika is honestly not as bad as others make him seem. He is very clear from the start and is very detailed but straight forward in his lectures. I got A's in every single one of his tests by only memorizing and understanding his lectures/powerpoints. There are 4 exams in total, one being the final which is not cumulative.
Education should be based on learning to understand the material. Not learning how to memorize verbatim. He comes off as very standoffish, critical, and at times makes you feel bothersome for asking questions. From taking this class I wouldn't be able to tell you what I learned. I understood nothing and just memorized.
I did better than I expected with this class. You need to know how you study when you come to this class. I tried other ppl study techniques and I didn't do so hot. He isn't as bad as other made him be. He always emails back and clarifies my answers even though others said he wouldn't. It's a hard class so don't slack. Bonus quizzes helped too!
He draws outrageous drawings on a whiteboard and takes videos of that with his webcam and expects everyone to understand what is going on. He also talks way too fast for anyone to understand. He also doesn't really care about the students and gives pop quizzes whenever he wants to.
Dr. Nika acts like setting yourself for failure is such a big deal when he does it every day in class with his lectures.
Ppts were 80+ slides and would blast through 35 in a lecture. Was never able to get ahead and quickly fell behind. Stopped showing up for lecture, focused on learning the material in the ppts and did better. Quizzes forced you to be prepared 15 minutes before lecture started whether there was a quiz or not. Smallest details on slides were the exams
Dr. Nika is very knowledgeable in his field which is why he comes off as a bit unapproachable. In reality he's very helpful! Lectures are detailed; use his diagrams! They'll be handy for his final! Exams are specific but straightforward. Final is big-picture. Pop quizzes are designed to boost grades so do them! Put in the work and you'll pass!
The entire time, I thought I was listening to a robot.
Quiz and exam Qs are directly from the slides. Some exam Qs are scenario based and will refer to cellular mechanisms/pathways. The final was a blessing and only covered the red terms in the slides. For lecture, he makes diagrams based on the slide notes. He holds review sessions outside of class hours. All lectures/exam reviews are recorded.
I'm not sure why Dr. Nika has a low rating, but he is one of the best BIO professors I've ever taken at UNLV. He is so smart and knows the topics so well. He gives pop quizzes, but if you study the slides it's not anything you should worry about. He also gives bonus quizzes to help your grade. He always curves and exams are based off of his ppt.
It's very difficult to follow his lectures because he's so monotone, but thankfully all of the information that you need to know are on the PowerPoint slides. They're very dense, but ALL of the exam questions are based on the slides. His pop quizzes aren't too bad. There's usually 10 quizzes total, and about 8 bonus quizzes to really help.
I would absolutely never take this class with this instructor again. Hes very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject, but speaks and teaches VERY fast and teaches as if we already know whats going on. Doesnt dumb things down at all for you. Online with him is even worse. The worst experience during my entire college time.
The class is very dense and hard to understand, first of all. W/ his lecture style, it's very easy to fall behind unless you put in extra effort to study before lectures and after. Pop quizzes were always a hit or miss, but he offers bonus quizzes to help out w/ the grade. I took him online and it wasn't fun, but managed to pass. Challenging exams.
Honestly, many people in my class put in minimum effort and blamed Dr. Nika for it. It is a content-heavy class, but if you memorize the powerpoints, you'll get an A. Dr. Nika always answered emails. His lectures are boring, I usually just make Anki cards off the ppts and watch the videos if I wanted more clarification. Have to work but it's doable
Go to lecture, rewatch lecture recording and draw out his diagrams and take your own notes along with it, make an Anki deck by copying and pasting his slides with certain words/pharses blanked out, memorize them, and know the basic concepts. You will be fine, His tests are straightforward. Quizzes are easy.
Honestly, if you put in the bare minimum you'll hardly get by. He talks fast in lecture, so if you're not paying attention, good luck, go rewatch his lectures. I just made quizlets so I can remember things. Memorize his slides and you'll be okay, but make sure to understand the concept. Quizzes are fine and he gives bonus quizzes.
This is hands down one of the most interesting science classes I've ever taken. Dr. Nika is extremely intelligent and knows the material well -- sometimes to the point that he was reciting complex concepts directly from memory at such a fast pace that detailed information could easily be missed. Re-watching lectures was key for me.
Nika is a solid choice for any biology class. He helps our grades by curving exams, replacing low quiz scores, and even fixing the grading scale. Yes, the class itself is hard and there is a lot to memorize, but going to Nika's lectures will help a lot by taking side notes. If you study at least 1-2 weeks before exams you will at least get a B!
Nika expects you to know as much as he does. He doesn't get that students have lives other than his class, and will expect you to know everything he ever mentions. In detail. Do you want to spend your semester memorizing long and complicated powerpoints? If not, avoid Nika. I can't express to you the effort required to keep pace in this class.
Dr. Nika's course was hard, I will admit it. I had to read the textbook, rewatch lectures, and go to office hours because the material was not easy to understand. You can't just memorize it like other bio courses. You have to understand it. Dr. Nika's class taught me how to efficiently study and he was overall a great educator. GO. TO. OFFICE HOURS
I would say this is definitely one of the more difficult upper divisions I have taken just due to the amount of info and the content itself. However, Dr. Nika's exams were pretty fair. I just studied the slides and every exam was curved based on how well the class did.
Dr. Nika is rude and dismissive especially when you ask questions during lecture. Try to take someone else.
Nika does his best to ensure his students succeed. He curves his exams, gives bonus quizzes (5+) to replace your lowest quiz (9+) grades, and shifts his grading scale to maximize GPA potential. Exams are 80% information recall and 20% synthesis. Attend class, create an Occlusion Anki deck for each PPT, ask questions, study hard, and you'll succeed!
Class is alright if you're good at memorization but BEWARE if you are a nervous test taker. There are at least 20 proctors during each quiz and me and many other students were accused of cheating just for fidgeting during the test. I have never taken tests in such an uncomfortable environment and dropped the class after that.
While this dude is definitely a genius, he is an awful teacher. He does not know or even attempt to dumb down these complicated ideas for his undergraduate students. The guy just blazes through these random diagrams spewing off these complicated terms that none of us understand. I would say to avoid him, but he is the only micro teacher at UNLV.
Class average of our test today was a 46 percent before he curved it. The dude expects way too much.
Review the slides ahead of class and pay attention in lecture-- the quizzes and exams include things he says that may not be included in the slides. Understand the processes and definitions. Synthesis questions will show on exams.
I LOVED HIS CLASS! He cares deeply about his students' grades and does everything in his power to ensure they pass his class. This class is lecture heavy but going to lectures and taking notes will help significantly with exams. They come straight from the slides and things he goes over during the lecture. He also curves generously with every exam.
As someone that enjoys just listening to educated people speak (i.e. lecture-heavy classes) Dr. Nika's Microbiology course was a joy to take. The man is immensely educated and voraciously intelligent; doesn't dumb the material down either, which I love. He's a straight-forward exam giver and a generous grader. Beware of the weekly pop quiz.
The professor is very smart and nice as well. If you study a week before the exams you will do great. Pop quizzes help your grade.
Do not waste your Nursing points on Kurt because Nika is awesome. His bonus quizzes/curves set you up for success and he does not brag about his class failing at the beginning of the semester! Nika's tests were not only easier, his lectures are done at the top of his head, and he never reads off slides. Absolute inspiration and the best professor!!
Dope teacher. Class is hard but rewarding. I like how he diagrams all of the processes.
Great option for biology courses. His material is very difficult, but he curves every exam to where the class average is an 80 percent . As long as you give an average amount of effort compared to everyone else in the class, you are pretty much guaranteed at least a B. He will make you a better science student. I personally like his diagrams.
Dr. Nika is a really smart guy but his lectures were all so material heavy. It was a lot and wants you to know everything for his exam. His drawings that he did on the board did not help at all and each drawing for him covered like 5 slides. Beware!Know each mechanism really well too. His quizzes are really dumb in my op.He curves the avg to 80% GL
Dr. Nika is a a very passionate professor that helps his students try and get their desired grade. His lectures are EXACTLY the exams and if you study the slides the pop quizzes should be easy. He has make up quizzes that are an automatic 100% if you just show up and take it. Every exam is curved to make the class average 80%.
I love Dr. Nika! Not going to lie, his lectures are very dense with information. His curves are generous. Some people do not like his diagrams/mechanisms. I like them because they give you a complete understanding of concepts. Office hours are 4 days a week. Also, he never gets angry at class performance. He is a very reasonable instructor.
Dr. Nika is the GOAT. Generous grader, dense lectures, but as long as you study properly you will get at least a B in his class. He can have a tiny bit of a temper though.
The class is not difficult but it sucks to see him every day at 8am since I took it in the summer. Dude did not need to give quizzes almost every day, especially since you had an exam every week. The lectures were very bland, boring, and useless as always. The curve is bad compared to his other classes. Only 7-10 pts. Diagrams are messy and hectic.
Dr. Nika is one of the best professors I've taken at UNLV and Im in my 3rd year. As an upper division biology professor, you would expect his class to be difficult and him to be very strict. However it was quite the opposite when I took him for both BIOL 351 and 453. Great communication, lecture heavy, exams are not difficult, would take him again.
Dr. Nika is one of the best instructors I have had during my time at UNLV. Sometimes he can come across as a little stern but deep down he has a really big heart and really cares about students success in his courses. Definitely the GOAT out of all of the life sciences professors. I will be back for more.
The slides he posts are helpful in studying for the exams. The exams can be difficult but he is generous when it comes to curves. He cares about his students.
He's a great instructor, but his teaching style is not for everyone. If he is teaching BIOL 190, then curves are not given due to the Biology department. Random quizzes are given, be sure to come every class if you don't want to miss out on those points. He gives bonus quizzes as well, but those are now administered at the end of class.
Dr. Nika is really good at explaining everything on the slides. He draws out all of the processes on the board which makes it easier for me to understand what the slides are trying to say. There are four exams (no cumulative final) and he curves the exams.
You dont know your real grade till the end, but compared to other professors in the bio190 department, Nika does not provide a study guide or explain what he is going to look for in an exam and is sometimes passive-aggressive when asking a question in class.
Nika is very smart and passionate about what he's teaching, but I wouldn't take him for an intro course. As others have said, you do not know your real grade throughout the semester unless you email him and he doesn't follow the same curriculum as the other 190 instructors. He has trouble simplifying concepts and moves thru lectures very quickly.
Personally, I would rather have had him for as a professor for an upper level biology class simply because he treats the class as if it were one. He'll tell you things about his other classes mid-lecture, then erase the board saying you don't need it so it feels like a waste of time since he does very little to help prepare for exams.
Professor Nika is extremely heavy on exams, I believe this is due to only teaching upper-level courses. I would not recommend taking his class if you cannot take notes fast. Professor Nika is used to curving exams without the curve the exams are tough, as in the exam average is a D.
Do not take Nika if you plan on passing. He is passive-aggressive and moves through lectures fast. The exams are difficult and long. The exams consist of multiple-choice answers. There are bonus quizzes throughout the semester, I recommend taking them if you want even a chance of passing this class.
Look, he's hard. I'm not going to lie about that. That said, he puts in effort. If you read the slides, go to office hours, and work hard, you can pass. Nika's fun, he's a bit specific and often uses very technical questions. He's also accommodating to DRC students which is important to know. I recommend him, if you're willing to put in the time.
Honestly, the worst class I took. Beware of pop quizzes as he does not announce them to ensure people come to class. Had a bit of a temper. He did write a long email after course evaluations since they weren't so good, so I believe that already says a lot about him.
The problem with his classes as others have said is that they are all so material heavy. Its TOO MUCH and no other science professor at UNLV requires you to memorize complicated processes with the insane level of detail that he does. If you work a job and/or have other classes you are going to struggle in his sections, point blank.
Took for virology also. Dr. Nika's style is not for everyone but I personally love the guy. Another thing I love is that you don't have to buy a textbook for any of his upper bio courses as his lectures will suffice. Thanks for a great summer!
Nika's class is challenging, but engaging. Stay on top of readings, go to office hours, and use resources like Unstuck ai for study prep. Rewarding for those willing to put in the work.
Good class but let me tell you how to succeed. Pay attention in lecture and note what he says is important, then read the book either chapters either before or after the lecture. Class becomes much easier.
The only thing I learned is how to cram, and even then I didn't pass lol (mind you, around 150 slides filled with info. for each midterm). He speaks too fast so it's impossible to keep up and his drawings aren't helpful. He curves, but unless you have an *incredible* memory and are a masochist, don't take him, save yourself.
This class was the hardest class I've ever taken. I'm not a fan of his teaching style, so I had to spend a lot of extra time teaching myself. The way some of his questions are worded on the exam were also unappealing. I recommend studying his slides only(and try to FULLY understand and MEMORIZE the processes and the material AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.) 1
Nika is very smart. His test questions are not super similar to what is taught, which is why I wouldn't take him again. His “synthesis” questions were most of the exam for exam 2, and he claims he talks about how to answer them in class but not true. Just goes over models, not how to answer. Also has pop quizzes every week, but has 5 bonus quizzes.
Dr. Nika truly cares which is why he has T/F pop quizzes. He wants you to study often, but his questions are never too crazy. He also gives back many points through curving to the highest score and dropping pop quiz scores. His lecture isn't awe worthy but it is sufficient to learn the material. His wording on some slides are a bit confusing tho.
He draws a whole lot so get ready for that. He is not very kind when it comes to speaking with him in office hours. His class starts at 830 so be there at 820 for pop quizzes. His slides are so dense and he will give exam questions that's are very difficult. I would not recommend Dr. Nika.
