Excellent professor!
He can be boring and the subject matter can also be dull, but he's a very lenient grader on the exams and he does strike up a good conversation most of the time. Good professor that can sometimes have bad clock management. You can notice his enthusiasm for philosophy though. Good, young addition to a department full of aging professors.
I really liked Prof Pak. He uses the whole class time to discuss the issues associated with the text - not on tangents like so many other profs. He knows the content. Class isn't mandatory, but I recommend attending as a lot is discussed. 3x essay exams. Fairly easy. I really enjoyed the class, learned a lot and will try to get Prof Pak again.
Excellent class. Active student discussion helps reinforce the lectures. Exams only have 3-4 essay questions but require thorough explication for points.
Mr. Pak is a great teacher, he really got me to see the importance of Deductive Logic in my everyday life. However every class meeting he just reads out of the book, it's a bit of a waste of time if the concepts are not too challenging. I don't know how he is in his other classes, but it's been a bit dissapointing, but i'm still glad I took phl 8
Had him for Deductive Logic - Awesome teacher!! Highly recommended to anyone. He's funny and explains things well. He is fair with grading and he is kind to his students. Over all a pretty easy class and easy exams. The book is a must.
Joseph truly puts philosophy into perspective for his students. He's extremely friendly, intelligent, and devoted to helping you understand the readings. I read and took notes on his lectures, and got an A on all tests. If I have time to take another philosophy class during my stay at LACC, I will take one of his again for sure!
Deductive Logic is a blast. Because of this Professor, I plan to take even more Philosophy classes.
CLEAR AND CONCISE PROFESSOR. ATTENDANCE NOT MANDATORY BUT NECESSARY. LECTURES WERE FUN, DISCUSSIONS REALLY HELPFUL ON TESTS . 3 TESTS IN ALL -THIS INCLUDES MIDTERM AND FINAL- ALL OF EQUAL WIEGHT. 4 QUESTIONS YOU CHOOSE 3 AND ANSWER AS THOROUGHLY AS YOU CAN. PRETTY EASY CLASS ! AND PROFESSOR WAS FUNNY AND EASY GOIING
it is very frustrating to be in this class, he reads outof the book, rambles and doesnt seem to understand any questions directed at him regarding the material. If I learn anything in this class it will be by god's own mercy. I have had more then 7 Philosophy classes at LACC and have a 4.0 average so i am pretty sure it isn't just me.
Enjoyed the reading. Essay exams are challenging and thorough. Stimulating and fun lectures. Engaging discussions. Participation not required but certainly makes the material more accessible and relevant. Learning how to think clearly is a good thing.
All in all a really good class. Exams are essay and a little challenging but not to bad. Class is not mandatory, but VERY helpful to attend and listen to the lecture/examples. If you don't understand something he does have office hours- that really helped me prepare for the exams. 3 exams all weighted the same.
great prof!highly reccomend him. he isnt hard, but in order to succeed you must take notes and read what is required.
Excellent course. Everyone could benefit from it. Eagerness to want to think and learn required.
Prof. Pak is kind and well-disposed. He appears to have some trouble managing lecture time but discussions are interesting. Fairly accessible for questions. Somewhat particular about the way he expects exam questions to be answered. Do not wait after first exam to figure that out; ask him questions.
I am currently taking his class right now and I've noticed that he does not understand any questions asked! His answers don't even make any sense/ are not even related to the question. He is also repetitive, it's annoying.
Mr.Pak is a great professor. He is clear and concise during his lectures. You will be required to know the readings he assigns. Doing good on his exams demands that you do the readings. I was encountering and academic burn-out prior to his class. Nevertheless, thanks to this class, I have once again regained that hunger to learn.
Pak communicates in a very rigid manner. He does not enjoy argument as he will hold it against you. Pak recommends that the student conduct the reading more so than explaining. I would recommend to Professor Pak that he explains to his students what is required for his exams in a more clear manner than stating, "it's in the book!" Very Poor!
I have taken Mr. Pak's 01 & 20 class. He is truly a great professor! He is funny, but sometimes he can be a bit boring, but hey class isn't mandatory (just the first 3 weeks are mandatory). There are 3 tests and they are all essays, but if you go to the lectures you'll be fine because the class discussions really do help!
Amazing teacher! If you read the book and study there's no way you won't get an A! Don't see how people can complain about him. He is a reason I am looking into majoring in philosophy!
Petty. Contradictory. Vengeful. Proving once again, why LACC is at the bottom of the list academically. Hiring faculty like Pak only harms student's as a whole and keeps LACC in the negative.
1st of all ppl sayin his hot. He is not dey must b blind 4 saying dat. He goes off topic durin lecture & has too cram everythin the last minute. 3) 3 exam. Must score all a's to get an A. 4) His exams R not easy & u always have some annoying ppl in the class that loves to argue & take up time of the class. unless a phil major dont take
You will learn plenty. He explains and clarifies the reading material, so attending class is recom. No assigned homework. 3 Exams, typically 4 to 6 essay question of which you choose 2 or 3 to answer. Overall great teacher. To do well on test's attend class and take detailed notes. Notes are the key! Vengeful yes, but fair grader overall.
a young guy who has high enough degree to teach. I assume he never took a time to observe the world critically. If you consider yourself as a progressive, it'll be hard to stand the way he lectures, like watching Fox News.
Professor has A LOT of knowledge, but he held back because he knew most his students aren't on his level. Very generous with my "C", easy class. Read everyday, take notes and you will get an "A".
"One of the smartest and friendly professor I have encountered in a long time!" He made this class really interesting and inspired me to really work hard in a class which I had little interest from the start. "Awesome professor and amazing lectures!"
"I loved his going to his classes becasue he was able to explain and clarify areas of difficult readings with ease." He has tremendous passion for Philosophy so you know he is excited to be in class. Even though I don't need another philosophy class, I'm going to take more next fall because now I find it fascinating.."Awesome Professor!"
I really enjoyed taking this class from Professor Pak. His lectures were easy to follow, he took the time to explain concepts to us, and he has a really easy-going manner. He didn't mandate attendance, so it's up to you to do the work, but if you do, you should do well in the class. I had family issues that kept me from class, but I still got a B.
Go to his class and take notes. Study and study is all I can tell you. This class is not for slacking off. Ethics will change your attitudes and will discuss very unsettling things but Prof. Pak does a great job in explaining the theories. His lectures are clear and he is very knowledgeable.
He is a terrible philosophy teacher. Clearly has his own ideas about what is right and wrong and is unable to substantiate them. Causes the class to be confused due to his inability to grasp basic ethically theories correctly. I only did well because I have a good understanding of philosophy from before taking his class.
I took Pak for Ethics, fall 2013, and I thought he was great. I understand why some people might dislike him; he's keen to debate with his students, but he's smarter than most of them are so he might come off as pompous or eager to shut people's opinions down. I thought the discussions were really helpful, and he was always helped me out if I asked
He's a good professor, however, unfortunately I don't much like his teaching method. He teaches the class well & helps you when you need help. Puts humor into the class, no extra credit, study your notes & do the readings for each exam. Three tests and final exam. If you're looking for an easy A professor, look elsewhere. Overall, great professor
I found Logic to be a very fun class and prof Pak makes it a smooth experience. I will say that I noticed many of my fellow classmates not asking questions or getting clarification on challenging concepts. If you take Pak, please make sure you stay on top of the concepts and ask questions if you are unclear. He is completely cool with it.
Pak is great! USE OFFICE HOURS, do all the readings and memorize, do all the study discussion questions at the beginning of each chapter and understand. Philosophy is a hard class since concepts are unheard of but if you study, you'll do great. If you want an A, you need to ace all the tests (theres 3 for summer) Overall he's a pretty good professo
This class is hard but extremely rewarding. The best you can hope for is a B if you're not there for every class and taking notes. You'll need to study each readingarticle multiple times to even hope for a C, much less an A on the 3 tests. Grading is uncompromising, but fair. I worked hard, learned things I'll keep for a lifetime, and got an A.
Philosophy is not easy I mean it was hard not going to lie. learning theories and Socrates well you gotta pay attention in class. So much reading !!! Just study study study becuase you will not do well if you don't. With that ending said professor Pak has great lectures and is a great speaker. I appreciate the effort he puts into the class :)
His class is hard and challenging. I must say I disagreed many times with some of his ethical discussionslectures. Take notes and do the readings. Tests are somewhat hard, you must work for your grade. I don' recommend him, I've had better Philosophy professor. He is a good professor but not as great.
I personality don't like Philosophy but he made it interesting. The class is a lot reading, one online quizzes due every week (which are easy and helpful) and only three test which only have two questions, answer essay format. I'm not planing on taking another Philosophy class but if I have too, I'll take another class by him.
took Pak last year and I have to say that he was eye opening. Fun class and we talked about different theories. most lectures are based on the reading. He's funny as heck and keeps things interesting.
I thought this class was going to be about history of religions, but I guess that's why the class is called PHILOSOPHY of religion. Lol. I took his intro class so there was some overlap with this one. Readings aren't easy but he helps the class out in lectures. I gotta give him mad props cuz he helped me out so much in his office hour.
I have never been bored for a minute during his lectures. He also doesn't count absences and is polite about everyone's opinions. His class is engaging and interesting. You're definitely not wasting your time by taking his class. He makes philosophical arguments very clear without taking away the complexity of them.
Blew my mind. Best class ever. Best prof ever..
Before I took Logic, my husband would usually win arguments we had. After this class, i started tearing down his arguments and would leave him speech less. One of the most helpful classes i have had
Professor Pak's Ethics class was a great overview into the many types of ethical theory. Tests are pretty straightforward, so if you take great notes, you will do fine. The book used for the class is a bit of a drag to read (because of the way some of the philosophers in it spoke), but he does an awesome job of breaking it down, so TAKE GOOD NOTES.
Professor Pak really made me think. It was an early class but still was interested to learn about religion, free will and the meaning in life. Went to office hours once and he helped a lot.
Could not stop laughing all semester long! Professor Pak's jokes and life stories were unreal. I loved how he tied this stories with philosophy and made subject more practical.
This Professor is one of a kind. He is so entertaining that I didn't care that the class was at 7:25am. His lectures are so relatable and understandable. I think he's somewhat of a genius in the way he teaches. Hilarious examples, but most of all he will change the way you view life! I wish there were more people like him in this world. Blessings
I've taken Philo 1, 8 and 20 with professor Pak. He's a good teacher and is always willing to help when you ask. Phil 8 made me change the way I think . I don't say "that just your opinion" anymore and now I get so annoyed when other people say it!
I'm taking his 7:25 morning class and he gives donuts and cookies for us so if you like that take him!! J
I really liked his teaching style. Very straightforward. He helped me to think about my career goals and what's important in life.
Good teacher. Makes you think. Strict on grading but if you did your work, it shouldn't be a problem. I love how he let us participate in class and be open. He has good control of his class at the same time so he doesnt let one stupid person waste the whole class time like some other teachers here do.
This class helped me so much with thinking and writing in general!!!! Strongly recommend.
Honest, caring and throws me for a loop every class. I'm not a phil major but I plan o n taking all of his classes.
He's a'ight.
Prof. Pak is great, you can tell he really loves what he teaches. His Philos.1 class basically just has 3 exams (including the final) and a bunch of quizzes online. The quizzes are just meant to motivate you to read (they are SUPER easy). You cannot do bad on any of the three exams since each one is 1/3 of your grade. Lots of reading too!
Professor pak was awesome! Loved his lectures. The class is not so hard if you pay attention and show up.
Fall 2016! He's a great professor! Very easy class. 2 take home exams, 1 essay response, and an open book/notebook final.. Take really good notes since take home exams/final are based ON LECTURES and book readings.
Interesting guy with funny stories. don't be fooled by the jokes because Professor Pak is sharp and expects to take things very seriously when it comes to the subject material. he pretty much goes through the book and makes things easier to understand because the book is pretty tough.
He's the best I've had at LACC so far. Went over readings from the text, explained everything well. Got excited when students asked questions. Really loves his subject. Gets a little tangential sometimes, but they're always good stories.
Professor Pak is a phenomenal teacher. He wants his students to read and understand the material. It is necessary to read the readings at least before or afterwards he goes over them in class. His tests are not easy but easy to pass if you understand the concept. He is very precise with test answers and what he is looking for in it.
Prof. Pak is a great talker. He will talk and talk about the subject. He includes his own stories that relate to what he is striving to come across. However, when it comes to essays, you need to make sure you understand the module because he is a tough grader. Overall, cool class. Make sure you stay wake because in class discussions are 99%
My friend told me to take Professor Park's class. I highly recommend even if you don't need the class.
I took his Philosophy 1 course online for the late start, so 8 weeks. The class was very interesting and definitely made me think. The reading can be tough to understand sometimes and I consider myself excellent at English, which helps a lot with the discussions and exams. Quizzes are fairly easy. He responds to emails quickly too.
Prof. Pak is one of my favorite professors at LACC. His lectures are broken down for students to understand. I took his honor class so I had to do an extra research paper. But aside from that be prepared to read! He's an awesome person and really cares about his students.
Professor Pak is a true inspiration. LACC is lucky to have him. His lectures are hilarious. Don't be discouraged with the material - it's dense. He does a great job at breaking the theories down in class and will take the time to help you if you don't understand. All his tests are essay format - he's a super tough grader. I worked hard to earn my B
Probably my favorite class even though I had not any expectations going in. The topics were so interesting and helped me figure out a lot of questions I had about ethics and morality. I skip a lot of classes, but for Paks class I did not miss. His "thought experiments" (you'll find out what that is if you take it) were fun and engaging.
Good Professor but he takes too long to grade. Wish he would make his online classes more of a priority.
I have taken a lot of online classes through LACC and this is the first one I've had any problems with. He'll take off points if you don't do the discussion on the first day that it's open. He will also knock off points if you finish the discussion in one sitting. Glad the class is 8 weeks. Won't communicate with you. I won't take him again.
you know what, this Prof is so hard to understand, I saw my essay's grade and it was low. I don't know what he expects from students. About the lecture, he goes out of topic. I mean just kind of life experience. I don't recommend to take any class of him. Don't need even sit down on the class, he doesn't care about your attendance. I'm sounlucky
His lectures are out of topic. I don't get what he's teaching. I am teaching myself by reading the textbook. But I expected his lectures should have been clear. Idk. What's going on, ohh
AWFUL! no communication with students at all. His lectures are just mediocre conversations of his life experiences. Tests are though and is hard to get a good passing grade. This is not even close to what a Philosophy class should look like. Took several weeks to grade a simple test. Even his life stories prove he is just a HUGE shallow person!
Happy holidays! It was such an amazing class. I worked so hard to get a B. Thanks!
Professor Pak was great. I had him for intro to Philosophy. Your supposed to read the chapter before going to class. It is a decent amount of reading but interesting for the most part. Then you discuss what you read in the following class. I very much enjoyed his class. Pay attention and take good notes and you'll pass. It wasn't that difficult.
He lets you take quizzes twice and only switches answers around so youre able to Ace the quiz the second time. Hes condescending and will NEVER answer a student email. He blitz grades so that he gives you no opportunity to correct your short comings. The two modules he post all semester are of him impersonating Keanu Reeves.
I love Philosophy and my major required philosophy and ethics classes, This unreasonable teacher made me change my opinion about the topic and question his ability to teach philosophy! He is horrible and traumatized! Never explained the arguments, instead brought a lot unqualified examples from his life and family!
If you can avoid this professor, PLEASE DO SO. I learned from reading the book. All he talks about is his friends/family and personal experience that has little to no relevance to the lecture. There are 3 papers, 1 midterm and 1 final. If you read the book, you are solid on the tests but the papers are tricky since there was little lecture from him
Philosophy is my favorite major and I am in this major. My goal was to work hard and pass this class with an A. All this teacher did was lecturing and telling stories about his wife and friends.
I'm sorry but this was the worst Professor I ever took. He random selects questions for the midterm and final, but doesn't give you a direction on what to study for those questions or what information out of 24 chapters will help you. He doesn't respond back to emails, you are on our own in this class.
I Loved Profesor Pak. It was a lot of reading but if you take decent notes and pay attention you'll be fine. I thought hisl lectures were so interesting.
Prof. Pak is an awesome professor. Very nice and caring, truly wants all of his students to succeed. His lectures are awesome and the time in class flies by because he makes it really interesting. If you read the material and take good notes from his lectures, you will get a good grade. Highly recommend taking his class if you get the chance!
There were 3 papers to be graded, I didn't receive a grade on paper 1 and 2 until the class was about a 1 week and half to closing. When I finally saw what he thought of my papers I asked what I did wrong? I received an answer two days before the last paper was due. He never really explained why he didn't like what I wrote. I only missed 1 quiz.
Professor Pak is great. He really makes Philosophy come alive instead of teaching it like it's from some dusty book. His lectures include TONS of class participation. He wont take it easy on you, but if you work hard it's worth it.
I love philosophy. I was really excited about this class at first. He is terrible. Not a professor at all. Doesnt explain ANYTHING about the topic,if not 10 min before the class ends. Talks just about his life/friends/family. Grades super late, literally weeks later for just some short answers. Its awful and you just go to class to warm the chairs
Just take someone else. He takes too long to give feedback, he doesnt give accurate feedback. He doesnt respond quick enough, I had 2 classes this summer and he took one week to answer important questions but 30 minutes to answer rhetorical questions. Just dont take him.
The book was a little bit boring but the class lectures helped a ton! The professor keeps things interesting and he made lol a few times. Lots of cool stories its not just about the class but makes it about life too.
Professor Pak changed my life! Always challenging me as a person and student and so generous with his time. He does make a lot of jokes, but hes so funny, even at 8 in the morning!
Great professor and easy class.
His lectures are pretty interesting and engaging. Lectures are super organized and stays on track of the schedule. Lots of discussion too about ethical situations which were actually fun. 3 essay exams but weekly quizzes you take online.
I had Professor Pak for two classes and I wish i took Intro to Philosophy with him first. Super chill guy and so funny. One of the better professors on campus.
Good online class.
Professor Joseph Pak was great. This was my second attempt in taking Philo 101. Took the online class and i couldn't be happier. The textbook is DRY and requires lots of reading but the homework assignments were pretty easy. As long as you can backup your response, you get full credit. Easy class to pass.
I like this professor. I took him for philosophy or Art, and the course itself was very informative and even sometimes funny. Professor Pak cares about the coursework material as well as about students. He provides also with his own notes and gives the copies to students.
Professor has high expectations for his students and does what he can to help you if you ask for it. The reading is hard to get and I went to his office hours so many times for help and he never made me feel like I was bothering him like so many other teachers do. Very nice teacher and gave me lots of advice about college and studying.
I took this introductory philosophy class for the requirement of general education. He's a tough grader and always require his students to write several papers for the whole semester. He doesn't provide clear instructions and it's hard to understand what he tries to teach. The quizzes are difficult because you cannot find answers from the textbook.
Took him online b/c COVID Pros: Any answer for the test, will be found on the textbook. He will explain anything if you ask him during zoom. He's chill. Didn't always read through textbook, sometimes you just have to skim really well to get answers for quizzes, but it's definitely in the book! Cons: won't reply to emails/canvas inbox
Just finished an eight-week course with Professor Pak. The material isn't that difficult - make sure you read the modules and chapters thoroughly. The answers are in both though he does throw in a few VERY tricky questions. Discussions are the usual. I would definitely take a class from him again.
You have to read the textbook and the modules on Canvas carefully and understand them. Professor Pak is available outside his stated offices hour, you just have to email him and wait for a reply.
Pak is a good professor when it comes to teaching the actual course. However, he won't respond to your emails, and expect the exams to be graded weeks after he says they will be done.
Took Professor Pak's Philo1 class during the Spring for a 8 week session and passed with a B. He's a tough grader. I maintained an A throughout the whole semester until the last two tests came up, which consisted of multiple choice and write in. The tests dropped my grade down to a B. Must like Philosophy to enjoy this class. It was not easy.
Prof. Pak is always available for office hours and can even meet during other times if you cannot make it to his listed hours. His lectures are amazing and so informative. If you read and pay attention during lecture, you should pass no problem.
Treats you like you're in HS. Im a 4yr taking CC elective courses too now that everything is online. One of the worst professors i've had. Something due at Friday? Make sure you participate by Wed(even tho its due Fri)if you want all pts. Ridiculous. Quiz questions with fill-in-blanks directly from the text too. Not here to memorize sentences.
I had Pak for this class that was through Zoom. he was very clear and made time for you if you had questions. Very to the point.
No feedback at all. Don't know what the criteria for discussions are because the rubric is locked behind some sort of lock that students can't access. Late grader, you won't know if you fail or not until the class is over. Not much work but I would still take somebody else because of the lack of communication.
Professor Pak is a likable guy, but his lectures are very slow and boring. He speaks in a way that feels like he assumes you understand what he's talking about. It is also very hard to reach him on email or canvas inbox, but he does do office hours. The tests aren't too hard actually and if you do the reading (a lot) the quizzes are easy
Assigned book was some Shakespearean vers of the bible abt philos. Little inst. given 4 modules (see CrashCourse Philos for help). Tests consist of vague questions. Beware-docked points for failing to post in discussions by Thurs. I left this class hating philos & would avoid this prof. BARELY recd an A & I have A's in all my classes - incl. stats.
Professor Pak is very interested in what he teaches, and it shows. I really enjoy listening to the class discussions and his lectures. He shows a lot of care and support outside of class whenever you need help. The only downside is that he is a pretty tough grader for LACC standards (at least from my personal experience)
I have previously taken Prof Pak for Phil 032 as part of RBS, and did not hesitate to take his ethics (Phil 020) class as RBS as well. Gives the whole term to write the honors research paper. Gives clear lectures, and exams consist of multiple choice (if any) and at least one essay question. Do the readings and pay attention! 10/10 class once again
Professor Pak isn't the worst professor, but if you have other options take them.
He is a very tough grader, is not organized, almost never gives feedback. You can't know why he marked your exam down because the answers are not visible for students. He almost never responds to emails and the lectures are pretty heavy. However, he will answer your questions during the lecture and will also privide the reading material for free.
One of my favorite classes at LACC and definitely the best Zoom class by far.
Just finish taking Professor Pak's class and I loved it ! He actually gives really good feedback on papers. I found his class super interesting and easy. His lectures really make you think. I took Philosophy of Religion. The class required 3 papers and some weekly discussions. I would defiantly retake his class again if I wasn't graduating.
Impossible to get an A. Also no feedback so you literally don't know what you are suppose to improve on.
This professor has the most abstract/bizarre grading procedures I have ever seen. The way this guy thinks does not make sense to me. He gives zero feedback so it is impossible to improve. I feel like I am doing more of his job than he is. He hasn't actually taught anything or put effort into the modules. The textbook does his job for him.
this class is very biased... we don't read anything written by women or people of color. since this is an ethics class that means our grades all have a racial/cultural/gender bias too. everything we learn is completely subjective and we aren't graded objectively. ethics students at lacc are missing out on the ethical perspectives of other cultures
Was a very good class
I took this course online and earned an A. No textbook is needed as the instructor posts readings. It's self-paced and easy, but you can't finish everything in one day. For discussions, wait a day before replying to classmates. Follow his pacing guidelines, and you'll pass without any problems.
Professor Pak has a specific teaching style, but if you engage with it, the class works well. The lectures are worth attending as he breaks down the material clearly. Use resources like the textbook, study sessions, and tools like unstuck ai to prep effectively. Overall, a solid ethics course.
As others have mentioned, it is a straightforward and easy course if you keep up with the readings and follow his grading/syllabus criteria. The online course when I took it was made up of: (1) weekly reading quizzes (2) weekly discussion posts (3) 2 exams. The reading was manageable if you do it each and take good notes (don't wait last minute!).
Took his in person class. Very funny professor, made the class super interesting and understandable. No homework, no in class assignments. Our grade revolves entirely on 3 written exams, this was fine with me because he really made the material understandable and memorable.
