This professor is awesome. He truly enjoys the subject matter which he teaches. If you have a chance to take his class you definitely should. Don't pass it up.
He requires a lot of reading and writing but I enjoyed him. He is a liberal but is fair to those who hold opposing views as long as they can support their assertions. No final, but a 10-12 page paper, and 3 page responses on 7 required books. A fun professor but beware of the talking stick!
Palermo's happenin'!
enjoyed his class. professor was enthusiastic and he was cool. lots of writing, but it was pretty easy. not a very tough course to pass if you pay attention to lectures.
exams were not terrible, but hard if you dont read. basically you were graded on how well the TA thought you paid attention in class. he showed up, preached some ****, and left everything to his TA. if you want to hear some leftwing jabber, take his class. if you dont, then dont bother.
Palermo is the best! I can't tell you enough how inspirational his teaching style is. I can't imagine learning about the sixties from anyone else. I want to be just like him when I grow up.
Very animated and a cool guy. I enjoyed his class very much. INteresting subject matter as well
Awesome guy. Totally into what he teaches. Definitely someone you should take if you're not very interested in History because he makes it fun.
I loved taking his classes. He is soooo interesting, and he's interested in what he is talking about. And yes he is a hot history teacher, even though I got a good grade, I wounldn't have minded some extra credit from him. ;)
it is about time that a professor of a GE course was able to keep my attention for the entire class period! He knows how to grab your attention and push it certain buttons for discussion. Very informative and fun with his lectures.
Palermo is the best! Everyone should take at least one of his classes beacuse he can actually grab you and make you not want to go to sleep when you go to class.
Very opinionated. Rather than discussing the events in history, preached motives and ideology from his point of view. Not unbiased in the least, and made it hard to discern what was important and what wasn't. Ends up that essay tests are easy....write what
Wow I have never had such a biased teacher in my life. It's like listening to Ted Kennedy talking about the deficit...zzzzz.....His facts are not always right in class. Since class has started we have not once talked about the material dealing with the class. If you like bush bashing then this is the class for you.
He is an amazing prof. and I would reccomend taking his class! Any that are offered that are taught by him
Never have any homework, classes usually end a little earlier than supposed to, tests are hard if you do not read, pretty funny guy.
This guy is awesome. He actually makes you want to learn. He's really liberal which gets old sometimes, but that's what makes Palermo who he is.
A great class...never mind those who complain about his points of view. He taught the subject, made it interesting and fun. I took the History of Vietnam course and it was great. He is approachable and helpful in class and in his office I felt his grading was fair and he was willing to be debated and engaged in class. I would definately reccomend taking any class from him.
This guy is a great teacher. He keeps you interested in whats going on, even if it's a boring subject. He even made the Great Depression somewhat interesting...that takes some skill.
lectured on everything EXCEPT for what was on the tests. lots of reading. lots of note taking. very biased. didnt have his facts right a lot of the times. made us buy his book but we never had to use it for his class...uncooperative, never there for office hours, left everything to the ta, BORING
One of the best professors at Sac State, he makes history fascinating by presenting a highly political view. Even if you don't like his politics, it's a nice contrast to normally dry history classes. Highly recommended.
One of the best teachers I've had. He does go off topic every now and then, but never about totally arbitrary things, it's all about important issues happening. Assigns very interesting books and usually assigns 3 2-page response papers. The written exams are easy too if you pay attention. He's also understanding and responsive to students.
Dr Palermo is one of the greatest professors I have had. I had him for 17B and then turned around and took 155 just because I enjoyed his class. He makes History interesting and is very helpful. No at all arrogant, really cares about his students and believes in what he is teaching.
Great teacher. Have to read 1 book every week and discuss in class, but the books assigned are interesting. After every book, you write a 2 page response paper (easy). Last assignment is a 8-10 page term paper. Highly recommend him, you'll learn a lot if you actually read the books and participate.
Nice guy, rants a ton though.
He is the best professor ever! Class was a breeze and his lectures are extremely interesting, I had 21 units with 2 lab courses and work full time and I got an A in this course! Test are Blue Book but he GIVES u the study guide that tells u the exact essays that will be on the test! SO you can pre-write it!
FIRST HALF OF THE SEMESTER WAS BORING. WHEN HE GETS TO TALKING ABOUT THE DEPRESSION AND WW2 HE GETS MORE INTERESTING. HIS LECTURES WERE BASICALLY HIM TALKING FOR THE WHOLE CLASS TIME. AS FOR HOMEWORK, THERE WAS ONLY 5 1PAGE ASSIGNMENTS, AND ONLY 3 EXAMS IN WHICH HE GAVE YOU A VERY HELPFUL STUDY GUIDE THAT HE GIVES YOU ANSWERS ON.
Nice guy, lectures are interesting. He presents a very different perspective which is refreshing from dry lectures in other classes, however he tends to go off on tangents a lot which can start to confuse you as to what exactly we're talking about. 3 2 page papers and 1 5-8pg term paper. Easy grader. Tests are very straightforward and easy!
If your a conservative then he will make you angry. Took only 3 essay exams in blue books which were super simple. Gave study guide which was exactly what he tested on. HW were 3 response papers about 2 pages in length about something from the text. Tends to ramble
It is difficult to rate professor Palermo accurately, for my class had a sub while he was on leave. The teacher subbing for him (Prof. Rose) was extremely difficult. Prof. Palermo was awesome when he finally came back. Watched a few clips from some very interesting documentries. Has a personality that keeps you interested.
midterms are blue book. study guide IS your midterm. couple response papers from readings. book report. its cool how he lectures the class on a down to earth level, but taking notes is extremely difficult. but thats not a problem at all since your study guides are your midterms. an A is DEFINITELY AND EASILY POSSIBLE.
I also had him for 17B. Dr. Palermo was challenging but honest in his presentations -- he let the students use their own minds and encouraged hard work -- I went to class not because I had but because I loved it!!
at first Palermo seemed like a nice funny guy, but as the symester progressed he seemed to get more and more off topic during his lectures which were not very comprehensive to begin with. some of his facts are just plain wrong (he claimed the ak 47 was used during ww2)and he is also Extremely liberal and biased to an unaccp. extent for a teacher.
I loved Palermo. I'm pbly one of the only Republicans that has, but once you get past his ramblings about the war and such he really starts to grow on you. I think he's a silly little Sicilian like myself and when he gets really excited about something historical it's adorable. I just wish that he'd keep his opinion to himself during class hours!
Great guy! very very liberal. fun clips in class and overall just an awesome class! i actually learned having fun, and the tests were easy. also he is an easy grader. def a class you must take!!
Dr. Palermo has a lot of energy in his lectures. He doesn't always stick to the curriculum, and he definitely gives a left wing view of history. But if you can put up with that, the class is not too difficult. He is funny and no in class exams. This guy loves the Vietnam War and JFK, and spends weeks lecturing about these two things.
EXTREMELY easy A. dont even bother going to lectures. just study the study guide by finding general info online or in the book. thats what i did and i got A+ on everything! he's wayyyyyy off topic. his "notes" are more like subtitles. watched alot of videos that will not help us with the exams. take this class to get an A, dont go to lectures!
Kennedy Fetish (RFK&JFK)!Beware! Completely understandable though considering he has written a few books on said topics. Very well versed in his area. King of his domain for sure. Strong opinions but only shows through minutely in his lectures every so often. I can dig it.
Very liberal. Needed to keep his opinions to himself. A student complained to the dean about it. Palermo spent an entire class period(really) doing some childish, sarcastic rant complaining about the mysterious student. It was very unprofessional. Aside from that, he was actually excellent at lecturing. I'd still recommend him. Learned a lot.
He is the best professor at Sac State. He's super liberal and intimidating but definitely revitalized my obsession with college. His style is exactly what i expected to be confronted with. You're lucky if his courses fit your schedule.
Maybe underclassmen might not get Palermo's enthusiasm, but his classes are awesome! He brings the reality from History into his teachings. Have you ever had a professor start his class with a Rolling Stones video?
A bright, unconventional teacher. History is not objective! Palermo offers an alternate view of history (one you wont find in the history books). He is very interesting, he doesn't just tell you about history and what was going on but he makes you understand the culture of the time and how the people felt and thought.
Palermo is the best history teacher I have ever had. He teaches with enthusiasm and passion for the subject. He is totally knowledgeable about so many things and is incredibly smart. I aspire to teach like him when I get my credential and I would recommend his classes to anyone.
Not your average Joe. This is the teacher to learn from about everything from politics to the environment to humanity. He is talented and knowledgeable; a necessary addition to anyone's schedule.
He is without a doubt the best professor at CSUS history department. PLUS look at the rants about him, they are posted by Hist 17B students who are typically not History majors. If you are serious about history and want to broaden your mind intellectually, then take Palermo.
If his political standpoints get to you, grow up and start to realize that the only person that can influence you is your self. Palermo is a great teacher who made history they way it should be. Great teacher and i would highly recommend him for any history course; you will get a good grade
Fantastic teacher, he is filled with knowledge and it overflows in an interesting way every class. I never missed it. Plus, he's a dashing man.
Great teacher, wonderful lecturer...one of the best. I recommend him to all, even non-history majors, you will really like and learn from his classes.
Horrible! Being in class felt like a complete waste of time. Readings were worthless, and he was completely scatter-brained. I would recommend you take any other professor but him.
Frequently off topic. Gave essay questions on exams that he never went over in class. Assigned way to much reading and expected you to retain it all for the final. Never discussed Vietnam in the history of the sixties because he "didn't want it to overlap with his class specifically on Vietnam," even though it was a significant event of the time.
He's extremely liberal and some people like that. If you don't, you'd better have command of facts, or he will attack your opinion. I think it is better to just kiss up, nod your head when he glorifies socialism, and get the easy A.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME? He just WALKED OUT on our class. for me to even take the time to rate this guy is unbearable. He's always off topic, he has an agenda of his own in teaching (or ranting) - he has nothing in his syllabus about use/no use laptops for notes, but then if he feels like it, he's a nazi about it! GROW UP PALERMO!
also had him for 17B -- Dr. Palermo was challenging but honest in his presentations -- he let the students use their own minds and encouraged hard work -- I went to class not because I had but because I loved it!!
Easy Class. Covers 2 GE areas. Attendance is not mandatory but he does random sign in sheets and you get a better grade in the end if he sees your name on the sheets so it is good to go. Three tests and 4 response papers. Papers are sooooo easy! Tests are easy as long as you study I recommend going to the study groups with his TA he is helpful!
Come on people. He isn't a communist. He just speaks open and critically about the subject of capitalism. He has an extensive knowledge of history and is very aware of cause-and-effect and historical forces that the non-history majors criticizing him probably don't understand. That being said, I do wish he was more focused and organized.
Palermo is a liberal college professor -- get used to that and don't get so offended by it. But that aside, Palermo is a good professor. He does get off topic sometimes but overall I learned a lot and would really like to take another class with him at some point.
People who think he has a communist agenda have no idea what communism means. He has a strong sense of social justice that's all, and has at least 5 degrees. Grow up people. Interesting how extremely well-educated people are often liberal, isn't it?
The class was boring and the readings were worthless.
I would avoid if I could do it over again.
He was very biased and I never felt like he presented both sides of any argument.
This guy was hard to understand and not very helpful when I vistited his office hours. I world take any other professor.
I understand that most college professors are liberal...but when you never present both sides of a story I don't think you are fair to students. Palermo seemed very one-sided and ususally shot down any questions that challenged what he opined.
I did all of the readings and they never helped on a test. Overall he was not very helpful if you did not understand something.
You are better off saving money on the books because they were unhelpful. Most people in the class had a hard time following where the lectures were going. Overall there was very little organization in the class.
He spent half of the days talking about Obama...no exaggeration. Most of us stopped going to class about half way through the semester. He is very nice, just hard to learn from.
He is very leftist, which is fine. But I often felt like he attacked me when I presented my more conservative arguments. I would avoid him.
Most of the lectures were very boring, and he mostly just repeated what was in the reading so attendance was not mandatory.
I had to take the class over again with another professor because I did not learn enough from Palermo. It was hard to stay awake in his class, and the expectations for students were very unclear.
When he presented the events and information in an unbiased way he was very fun. Unfortunately he rarely did that, and class was boring most days.
we never used the books, so save your money. he rants a lot so most people just brought there laptops and surfed the web. he takes role occasionally, but class was not mandatory
The class was very difficult. The expectations for students were unclear, and the class was boring most days. The professor was not very helpful at his office hours, and he shot down most opinions that differed from his own. I wouldn't recommend him.
Palermo is a nice guy but he does not communicate information in a way that is easy to understand. I got a B in the class, but most students had a much harder time.
I recommend taking another professor. Palermo is a nice guy and all, but I think there are better professors out there.
He is very random and unorganized in his lectures. I imagine that he would do better in a lower division setting where he can be a little less specific. He was nice, but not very open to questions.
The class was challenging, but mostly because of the lack of clarity and organization. The midterm and final were difficult because they were exclusively based on the readings.
One midterm, one final, and two papers...except that he never graded the final or our 10 pg research papers. I was very upset that all that work ended up being worthless. The good news is that he is a kind of easy grader if you get on his good side like I did.
He made us buy five books...none of which were helpful. He seemingly never stayed on schedule, and took forever to grade our work. At one point he gave the same lecture three class periods in a row, so attendence became less than mandatory
I had high exceptations for this class, and none of them were met. Palermo is a great guy and he is very nice. He is just very unorganized. My class heard the same lecture three times. Don't rely on the course schedule, because he doesn't follow it. We didn't talk about half of the subjects on the course schedule.
make sure you do the three essay assignments, make sure you get the study guide, lectures have almost nothing to do with the exams...over all interesting method of teaching...fun time when he threw the dryerase marker at the wall!!!
The text books ended up being more useful than going to class. All the exams and papers were based entirely on the readings. The lectures were boring and seemed to just drone on and on every day.
I thought this was class was really interesting. It was disorganized since he never followed the schedule on the syllabus and the lectures seem scattered everywhere. But overall he made the class fun, occasionally joking around. 1 midterm, 1 final, 3 papers. Study hard and actually read the books and you should be just fine!
Extremely rude and disrespectful. Very hostile to opinions contrary to his own and unwilling to consider opposing viewpoints. I have never met a professor at CSUS with as little respect for his students. His course is full of trite liberal cliches that he will expect you to accept without question. Avoid at all costs.
Palermo is really passionate about what he teaches. He really knows his stuff, and isn't afraid to voice his opinions. One frustrating thing about his classes though is that when you raise your hand to talk, it takes him awhile to call on you. But I think it's because he gets off track very easily. His History of the 1960s class is awesome.
Terrible teacher. He's Nice, and gives you a study guide For exams. He knows what hes talking about but just makes NO SENSE in his lectures. I wouldn't take any class by him again.
showing up to his class only for attendance point. his lectures are all over the place. a few papers including midterms and term paper. 1st midterm and final are in class. he gives you the prompt ahead of time which is helpful. Know your stuff by googling the information. Use the books to write the paper b/c he grades based on sources used.
He is a great History teacher and is really pationate about his history. I hated history and he made me love it! He gives you a study before the mid-term, exactly what would be in the mid-term. All you need to do is look through your book and know few things. I recommend him!
He's laid back and seems to know alot about this course in general but tends to be very off topic. His lectures have no use what so ever when it comes to his exams. 3 are given which includes the final, all of which are essay based. He also assigns response papers which are on a credit/no credit basis. Its tough trying to get an A in the course.
The BEST professor that Sac State has to offer in the history department. He CARES about his students and is very open about what occurred in history (shows both sides). The class is OK and one is able to achieve a B or higher if you try. During this semester, we had 3 exams which is exactly as the study guide, 3 response papers, and attendance.
Really knows his history even if it is left of center. I found his lectures extremely interesting - gave me a lot to think about, especially since I'm right of center. I liked his books and was amazed at how my understanding has changed over the years, especially my take on "Slaughter House Five." Very good class.
Amazing teacher very passionate when teaching class little jumpy on lectures but easy class surprise role sheet attend clsdd interesting way of teaching easy class and easy midterm
He has a PhD so this teacher knows what he is talking about. Although class isn't mandatory, come to class to listen to lecture because he likes to give out answer to what will be on the tests. He is very enthusiastic about whatever he is talking about. Tests are difficult but if you read the textbooks, you will do fine.
This guy is wonderful. I read his books and listened to his lectures and was disgusted by the lies we were told by our government. He doesn't oppose differing views he just opposes differing views with no facts. Everything has truth and he always tells you to look it up. Very inciteful man.
I am in the process of dropping this class. After just 3 sessions I cannot stand him! All he does is bash conservatives the entire class! Everything he says is coated in hatred toward anything possibly Republican. He rambles on and on, name and date dropping. One sentence he's in the 40's, the next 2000. IMPOSSIBLE to take notes! BAD BAD BAD!!!!!
He is a nice professor. His notes are everywhere. If you don't like History but have to take it, take him. He gives out 3 exams, and 3 response papers, which are very easy. He hates powerpoints but you would not need any. His tests are all from notes.
Useless. Very passionate, but no organization and his exams have nothing to do with his lectures. Read the book and do the study guides. Going to class is a waste of time except for getting assignments and due dates.
Prof. Palermo is a great if you like classes that aren't focused on powerpoints. He develops his lectures freehand. It's difficult to take notes because he isn't so organized and goes all over the place but it's a very easy class and he brings a lot of insight to things you probably never thought. Recommended for someone that wants an easy A
Great professor! It was a super easy A. he gives the midterms and the finals before hand so you know exactly what is on it. few response papers but nothing longer than 2 pages. don't even need to buy the book should just check it out from the reserve table
Palermo is a great professor. He is passionate about his material as well as funny. Some of the books you purchase are mandatory such as Slaughterhouse 5 and the RFK. An essay on Slaughterhouse 5 and one on RFK. Read the books show up to class and you will pass. I slacked off got a C.
Great professor! I was never interested in history before but now after taking the class, I really like it. Prof. Palermo is a nice prof and tries his best to make the lectures fun. He is very passionate about the subject. I recommend him!
Overall, he has an interesting personality. 3 papers: one on RFK, next one on Slaughterhouse 5, and the last of your choice. One midterm and final, which are essays. He gives you a study guide ahead of time. TA graded the tests. Palermo graded papers. He gets side-tracked alot in his lectures.
Lectures are interesting, but have almost nothing to do with the class or tests. Tests are difficult, usually having to write 17 paragraphs in an hour. Easy grader on the tests, but your only grades in the class are the tests and a couple essays. The only books you need are the ones written by him.
Good History Professor. Very passionate about what he teaches, so lectures can get long and sometimes side-tracked. 4 response papers on textbook (any topic within a time period), Slaughter House 5 (optional e.c.),his RFK book, and his 80's book. Doesn't use ppts much, but he shows A LOT of video footages. On exams, allowed to use a sheet of notes.
Prof. Palermo inspired me
The lectures are practically irrelevant to the tests. No need to go to class, he gives you a study guide and you won't know what's on it from class anyway. He is enthusiastic and knowledgable about history, but loves the sound of his voice. DON'T BUY THE BOOKS. You'll use them once tops. He also wrote most of them. Just share or go to the library.
Amazing professor, he is one of the best I have ever had. He is very passionate about what he teaches. He cares about the students' learning. He makes connections between historical events and today's social issues. Tests are not difficult, the only thing is the testing time. Overall, great class. Take it with friends, and study in groups.
Great professor! Lectures have nothing to do with the tests but they were very interesting ! He talks a lot about recent history like 911 and all that ! Very interesting, he gives out a study guide and it is very straight forward! He usually makes you write a paragraph for each word usually "5-6 words" and two short essay questions! super easy!!
I enjoy taking courses with Dr. Palermo. I learned about U.S. in the sixties primarily through taking courses with him. Dr. Palermo is very fair with the students and cares for them.
Fantastic teacher. Very passionate about his lectures, but can also go on very long tangents. He is also not shy to express his political and economic views. Took his U.S. in Vietnam Class; there were 2-3 out of class essays, a mid-term and final (both with essays). Anyone interested in U.S. History NEEDS to take Hist 160.
He is a very entertaining professor. Tends to go on rants that don't have anything to do with the lecture. His study guides has a lot of terms on them and he doesn't go over half of them. I basically wikipedia'd everything. Tests are essays. You won't learn much, but it's an easy A.
He's really enthusiastic when lecturing. Kind of gets off topic so sometimes parts of the lecture feels pointless. Its cool that he relates the history back to present time but he can get repetitive about it. Gave us a lot of terms to remember but only gave us 5 and we had to choose 2 essay questions. After the first exam you get to use notes.
Very passionate when he talks, but he does get off topic a lot. Tries to relate history to what is going on today which is pretty interesting. There are 4 response papers, 2 midterms, and a final and those are the only thing that go in the grade book. He gives a study guide ahead of time and occasionally lets you use a sheet of note on the test.
I don't quite understand all the negative feedback for Palermo. Yeah is pretty liberal but he doesn't force you to conform to his views while writing. I would take him again for sure.
I took his class last semester but I really enjoyed his class, his lectures are long and he usually just rants but if you need help or want him to clarify something he will. There are 3 exams and for the last two you are able to use a cheat sheet which is really helpful. He didn't take role either.
Overall this class was pretty easy. You don't have to show up for class except the day before the test to get the study guide. Other than that 4 response papers and 3 tests plus final. I didn't do 2 response papers and did alright on tests, I got a B. Easy grader if he grades your paper and not the TA(seems snobby and is a know it all).
He's definitely a talker and I was always falling asleep during his lectures but you definitely don't have to show up to every class. One thing I didn't like was he had his TA grade our test and the TA was a tough grader. Other than that it was a pretty easy class. Only 3 blue book test and 4 response papers.
Essay questions for tests. Not many papers. He was helpful but often goes off on rants and tangents, the lectures tend to be confusing.
Tests are easy if you read and go to class. He makes lectures interesting and talks about current events more than anything
He is very passionate with his lectures, but all you do is sit there and listen so it gets really boring and long. You don't have to come to class, but he passes around a roll sheet for credit occasionally. There are 4 two-page response papers on textbooks and 3 tests that are a lot of writing, but he lets you bring notes to help.
Palermo is very passionate about his subject! His lectures are very long however his diction is sometimes hilarious and very sarcastic. Four responses are required total and they are due after discussing chapters in the book. There's two midterms and 1 book along with 4 other chapter books to buy for this class. Overall he's a fair teacher.
This class is easy if you remember History from High School. His books are only really needed when a paper is due. Get them at the Library if you can. Don't waste your money. Definitely go to class because he takes roll on days not a lot of people show up and it counts for points. You also get a study sheet that will help for the exams.
4 response papers, 3 exams (2 of which he allows 1 pg notes). Palermo makes his TA grade the exams so expect little to no feedback from him. He only grades the papers, and when you ask him about your paper, little to no feedback is given. Adds words onto the study guides he gives and usually NEVER chooses them. Would recommend dif. hist. prof.
Would definitely recommend taking his class especially if you aren't all that into history. He's funny, energetic, and passionate. Definitely need to study for tests but he gives study guides and covers everything in class. Lecture heavy but his lectures are interesting and relevant.
tbh this class was really boring, but was the easiest A I have ever gotten. He even says himself that he tries to pass everyone since it is a GE course. He really likes talking and yelling and his lectures are boring, but if you put in the effort for the tests and response papers you will get an A.
Yes, there are 4 response papers but you only have to write 2 pages each (double spaced too). He gives out study guides for all 3 exams which is super helpful, and he also allows a whole 8x11 hand written cheat sheet (front and back) for the last 2 exams. He is super passionate about History, and makes hilarious sarcastic jokes during class.
Easiest Professor ever
Great professor - and his T.A was brilliant. Not Sure if he'll be there again, a lovely British dude, funny and helpful. Really good course and Palermo kept it interesting.
Palermos History 17B class was very easy for me. There is no homework in the class except for three essays which are relatively easy. There is no group work, you really just have to show up to class. There are three exams and all were pretty easy for me. He is very passionate about what he does and hes a cool guy, i would definitely recommend him.
Dr. Palermo is funny and he makes lectures interesting. He encourages student participation, and gives good feedback on papers. Two-page response papers nearly every week, one final essay. Students work in groups of two or three to lead discussions each week.
Very passionate about history. Lectures include mostly him ranting angrily. No phones allowed during lecture. Tests were all writing essays. Doesn't post grades anywhere so you don't know what you have until the end of the semester. Allows 1-2 pages of handwritten notes for tests.
I don't really know what to say about Palermo. His class was not difficult at all. But for an upper division History class about an interesting subject; I did not learn much I already didn't know. He is very caring and knowledgeable however, but he can go off on tangents which ruins his lectures and the class overall. Take him anyway :) Easy A-
Palermo was a fun professor. His lectures were kind of all over the place about what's going on in the world- did not really pertain to the book.. Grades are based off of exams and responses- doesn't use canvas. But the responses are easy and he gives a detailed study guide and we can use a sheet of notes. He is interesting and a great individual.
This guy is ALL OVER THE PLACE. he is enthusiastic about history but gets off topic ALOT and goes on rants about his thoughts/opinions. The class isnt hard, but get ready to sit and listen to him rant. Read his books, show up for class, and put in any kind of effort you should be fine to pass.
Nothing online. Only 2 midterms and response papers for extra credit. No homework. He goes off on a tanget all the time but the class is easy just have to show up sometimes to find out when things are due since he doesn't post ANYTHING online.
3 exams and 3 papers based on the readings. The exams are pretty easy since he allows the students to use the study guide. And then for the final exam he allows a front and back cheat sheet. He doesn't upload the slides on canvas so you would want to attend class. He also doesn't put the grades on canvas so you would have to go to his office hours.
This professor is the reason why I love history. His lectures and discussions on certain topics just made the class super interesting. He's an awesome person in general. He really cares for his students and just wants nothing but the best from YOU. He's very straight up about things, never sugar codes anything. He likes to curse in his lectures.
He spends most of his lectures tallking about his personal thoughts on subjects not related to the topic. Often goes all of the place with his rant, you may listen 40 min lecture without learning anything. He will express his political views heavily. It's my last semester, and so far it was a veary easy but also a boring and not very useful class.
he tells you to purchase three books we only used one, I strongly believe if we would have been on campus this class would have been better. But I found myself often bored with his recorded lectures.
The asynchronous HIST 17B class was great! He actually is interested in what he's talking about and keeps the content interesting. He posts about 1 lecture a week that last between 30 - 90 minutes. You can watch them in 2x speed and take some occasional notes. No homework besides roughly 1 paper/month that is about 3-4 pages.
Professor Palermo is great! Class was simple and straightforward. Pre-recorded lecture every week, no homework but there are essays you have to write. Exam was doable.
Hard class because there was minimal teacher input and student interaction. For being a seminar I hoped for more student-to-student interaction, but there was none. He graded slowly and rarely. Had to buy lots of books and essays supposed to be weekly. He didn't follow the syllabus. This class would have been great in person, but was bad online.
Required a lot of reading books but we only had to 1-2 response papers a week. On zoom we would present one piece from the reading we found interesting. No exams, quizzes, just response papers that are not worth points. One big final at the end of the semester that is 8-10 pages
This was one of my easiest classes. There were only 3 papers to do throughout the whole semester, each was 3-5 pages long. He pre-records his lectures, posts 1 about each week. They are about 30-50 mins long and are important to watch for your response papers. Other than that NO homework. Would definitely take him again.
Dr. Palermo may be the worst professor I've ever had. He is totally incompetent when it comes to teaching online. He will upload lectures on no particular schedule and not notify you. The entire grade was based on 1 paper, 2 midterms and 1 final. There is no way to gauge progress. Every score is out of 0 and he never explained his grading process.
As long as you write clear and concise papers you will do excellent in this class. The Professor gives you free reign-with a structured outline to write about in representation of the lecture and reading topics discussed. You have multiple classes and need another that you can handle? Take The Sixties course!!
Took Joe for both History seminars. If you want to learn anything at all, avoid him. If you want a pointless, easy A take him! These seminars are a joke in their own right, but he made them all the more senseless.
Professor is passionate about history but often goes on random rants during lectures. Grades are based solely on 3, 6-page essays using info from lectures + the textbook. Other than the essays, there are no other homework assignments other than just reading the textbook.
He is very easy if you accept that he is old school, and that you will just listen and take notes. He likes lecturing and ranting, but equally gives you room to write what you want to write on the topics he covers, just be prepared to write about 3 essays. Don't buy all the books he lists, it was a HUGE waste of money. I only read parts of one.
gave us all semester to prepare for our senior paper! About 20 pages. Made it easier because he broke down the paper throughout the semester in 5 papers. Zoom lectures were short though
Please don't take this class from this prof unless you want to be scarred. Most of his lectures were okay, but frankly going frame by frame REPEATEDLY during JFK's assassination vid was extremely sick and traumatizing. I understand the need to cover the topic, but there was no reason to trigger students like that for a prolonged period.
Professor Palermo is horrible as a professor. His lectures are always about his political views and ranting about the conflicts in history, rather than educating us about them. His powerpoints are REALLY wordy and he doesn't even post them on canvas. Most of his lectures are based on his thoughts only. And there's only long term papers.
Professor Joseph Palermo only teaches based on his own research and opinions. He can get very defensive when someone corrects and disagrees with him. There is no homework. No class engagement. Lectures are all fast paced and will put you to sleep and leaving you confused. His power point slides are long and not available on canvas.
He's opinionated & political. He's very defensive when you oppose his thoughts + puts you on the spot, trying to embarrass/humiliate you. He shoved the microphone up a guy's face before since he nodded no. Felt like he was racist in a way since the guy was of color and he only targeted him, not the white girl next to him. She nodded no too.
He doesn't assign hw. It's bad b/c there's no other things for your grade to depend on other than the midterm papers that's up to 10 pages long. So if you mess up on your term papers then you messed up in that class. It's the only assignments in there and some of it isn't related to his lectures. just textbook.
He rambles a lot but if you want a class that's light on work, I recommend.
To be honest, I did not mind his political rants, and I enjoyed them because it was connected to history. There are many textbooks but don't buy them all, since you only need a few for the essays you have to write. He's great at lectures, and his assignments aren't that hard
Professor Palermo is VERY lecture heavy. There are 3 papers you are graded on so if you mess that up you kind of messed up your grade in this class. The textbook will be your best friend since the lectures are kind of based on his political beliefs and have no slides to take notes on. No phones or electronics are allowed either, not even laptops.
Great class and professor. He talks a lot but besides that there isn't really much. There is only three assignments which isn't hard. If you show up to class and take notes you should have no problems.
I feel like I didn't learn anything in this class, and I was so excited. Palermo mostly just goes on rants about his views and opinions. Also shows very graphic images and videos with no warning. I understand explaining history, but at some point it just feels like he wanted a reaction out of people. Took forever on grading.
Yes, there was a couple of incidents that resulted in class being dismissed early. However, this was still one of the classes I looked forward to due to his interpretation of history and commentary. There are only 4 papers in total including the final. You may get a little lost in lecture, I recommend recording. No slides posted. Fun experience.
I loved the way Prof Palermo taught, 100% would take again! The only thing he has us do in class is listen to his lectures which can get boring but what are you gonna do, it's a history class. Love the fact that he has no tests, grading is based on papers written off of prompts he has given us. Attend class bc you won't get some info if u don't go.
Definitely attend class because you miss good info if you're not there. Lectures can sometimes be boring but it's not too bad, other than that I enjoyed his slides and lectures. Loved this class, am definitely going to take him again soon!
Goes on random often unrelated rants to the actual lecture during lectures, lecture slideshows are mainly images and photos. Hard to take notes as his class is unorganized. Said "go to your counselors and tell them that you want to sl*t your wrists" in order to get accomodations for extra time on the exams.
Palero is awesome!!! I took his History Seminar class. I see people saying he's "political" but you learn A LOT from his lectures! He's opinionated, but we're literally discussing history / politics the entire class, so DUH you gotta be opinionated. We spend all class talking. Easy assignments, 1-2 page "response" paper each week. Highly recommend!
Palermo is passionate about the subject he's teaching. It's hard to take notes because the slides he shows tend to just be photos. He also tends to get off-topic and rant about certain current or historical events. He assigns a TON of books to read but you don't have to buy any of them since he never assigns readings. Final exams are in person
He is a great teacher and very passionate about what he is teaching. I didn't take notes in class since it was quite hard but the written exams are about the books. You get to choose what book and what chapter you want to write about. I would take him again.
Palermo is a passionate teacher and I enjoyed his lectures. Very interesting class. There are a couple papers in the class that I thought were pretty easily graded. The only thing I would really say is that I wish there was more discourse allowed in the class. He lectured a lot and hardly wanted people to ask him questions.
He is passionate and educated about his subject, but class is just him ranting. There was a midterm and final, and basically no other work, assignments, or tests besides that. It's a super easy final/midterm because you can use a page of notes.
Professor Palermo likes to project his own political and world views onto students. Every few lectures or so, there seemed to be an implicit request for students to agree with his opinions about the topic at hand. Honestly, most students didn't want to participate due to his strongly-opinionated attitude. Very little homework assigned though.
Took his class last semester, he would only talk about current events and give his views on them rather than what the course was supposed to be about, would spend 90% of the class talking about current events and then rush through slides talking about what the whole hour long lecture was supposed to be about. Grades easy no hw but not worth it.
Professor Palermo's lectures can be hit-or-miss. While he shares insightful historical commentary, his teaching style is disorganized. The textbook is essential, and unstuck AI proved helpful for preparing. Overall, an experience with highs and lows.
I never received the scores for my last 2 exams and final paper (on a book he wrote himself btw)a grade just appeared in my student center. Gives 2 scores on exams and determines which one is received by attendance. Very unorganized and he is definitely politically driven. Felt like I wasn't getting the whole story to meet the narrative he wanted.
In all my years of going to school, this teacher is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. He canceled the first 3 days of class and then when we finally had our first day after 2 weeks of classes. Constantly rants about nonsense and doesn't actually teach. Horribly opinionated and does not teach based on factual evidence of events. STEER CLEAR!
How can this dude go on a 30 min political rant about how immoral x, y, and z person is but then force all of his students to buy HIS book that HE wrote that sells for a minimum of 50$. Its his book couldnt he easily give us all free pdfs on canvas? Uses what little power he has to make a quick buck off of already struggling students. Wild.
Talks a lot about irrelevant things, plays a lot of videos. There was only one assignment due in this class that was about his book he wrote. The class is mainly graded by tests. Attendance isn't mandatory although when he begins to notice people not showing up he hands out an attendance sheet for extra credit.
Professor Palermo was okay, he talked a lot about political beliefs versus the actual topics at hand. 1 writing assignment on his own book, 2 midterms, and 1 final. They were easy because he didn't explain things properly, and we ended up just choosing our own terms/essays. He gives extra credit sometimes for attendance, as many didn't show.
I had Palermo last year, and for the first class in the spring semester, he never went through the syllabus at all. For the whole time, he went off track in his political opinions and wanted the students to agree with him. Some students even said the same thing about him going off track on his politics. I dropped his class immediately.
His class was easy
Rambles endlessly about stuff irrelevant to the class, almost no actual teaching or instruction. Seemed easy enough if only because he didn't put the effort in to create assignments. Easy grade, but don't expect to walk away with any worthwhile information.
More of a political ideologue than a teacher. If you like boomer Facebook rants, you'll love his class.
I enjoyed Palermo's "rants" maybe I am biased in belief but he's very passionate. He's funny too! All the details to pass the class are in his lectures/video/excerpt reading. You don't have to agree with his beliefs but if you attend his lectures and pick out topics relevant to the exams this is a relatively easier history class to take.
