I loved Professor Perry's class. It pushed me intellectually and I loved every moment of it! He is an incredible teacher whom I highly recommend.
ditto
Dr. Parry is a great orator and discussion leader. He's also just a great guy with interesting things to say about course material. He makes things applicable to life, too.
I loved his class. He isn't afraid to discuss things or to dive into interesting subject material. I would recommend his civilzation class to anyone.
since taking the second half of this class with another teacher and hating my life... i've realized how truly awesome doctor parry really was
I love Dr. Parry! His assignments and tests are reasonable, but they still challenge you to learn and think. Sometimes his lectures are hard to follow because he jumps around a lot, but if you've read the text beforehand, it is much easier to know what is going on.
I loved this class. I'm not a fan of the grading system, but if you're willing to do all the assignments and spend a lot of time reading, you learn tons. I walked away from the final with a great feeling. I love Humanities even more now.
Good Teacher, good lectures. His test are a bit scattered in content, but if you're willing to put in a lot of reading time you'll enjoy his class.
I loved this class and Dr Parry. He is interested in what he does and presents the material in a way that is easy to understand. Go to the discussion sections and you will be fine.
I could feel Parry's love for this subject. Interesting class. Just do the reading and pay attention in class. No format to his lectures, he just talks and you take notes. Fair tests, fair teacher. I recommend him.
Great Teacher! Loved the class and I felt everything was fair. Test to Papers are all graded fairly. I recommend him...take him!
Dr. Parry is such a kind man and easily one of the smartest men in the dept. He's also SO REFRESHING! The first day of class one kid asked if he could move onto a different slide faster because of the nude sculptures in it. Parry told him he better think of dropping the class if the images bothered him because it was the first of many. I loved it!
Dr. Parry is incredible. He has so many interesting insights into our course material. He is incredibly fair. He is easy to talk to espcially if you do not understand something. He is so willing to help. He is very personable but demanding. I have learned so much in his class. I would recommend him to anyone.
He is an awesome professure! His lectures are intresting and help you to understand what the humanities is all about. He is really nice and easy to talk to. He will also work with you if anything comes up in your life. I highly recommend him!
I could tell he loved the subject however I found his "today" examples out of place and immature. I was looking forward to studying the classics but I felt that I didn't learn anything insightful and deep. maybe it was just my misperception of humanities.
One thing I really liked about Dr. Parry was that he read the mid-semester reviews by students and actually DID something about it. This class is very interesting & I liked his lectures but there is quite a bit of reading + papers so it requires a time commitment. He's very friendly & approachable and (especially for a GE ) I really enjoyed it.
Favorite class so far at BYU!!! The guy is soo smart and there's no doubt that he loves what he does. This subject could be really boring with the wrong professor, but he makes it SOO interesting... TAKE THIS CLASS FROM DR. PARRY... his tests are fair and the papers are very forgiving in the way he allows you to fix them. not much busy work. A+!!!

This man is amazing!! He knows and loves the material and really wants to get his students to feel the same way. He is super smart and you can tell he is a very knowledgeable man. Also, he is really helpful and kind and easy!!! He makes his tests really easy as long as you go to class and pay attention; he's not out to get you.
Dr. Parry is awesome! First couple of classes seem a bit boring, but once you get into it you'll see that he has some great insight not only about the text/art, but about life. Looked forward to this class more than any other. If you go to class and do the reading you'll be in great shape.
Dr. Parry was great. Lots of in-class discussions, only papers were short paragraphs, on which prompt and helpful feedback was given. The tests were easy-he's not crazy about tests-so if you did the reading (or even did Spark Notes and attended class during discussions) you'd be fine. Same with quizzes- attend class so you don't miss them.
Must attend Discussion Grp on Friday's for quizzes. The readings he assigns are wonderful, however if you do not have enough time. Go over spark notes. Easy paper assignments. Exams aren't too difficult but do require to read text selections and memorize art. Impossible to know what he will quiz you on. Fairly easy class but time consuming.
Dr. Parry is the best. His tests are really straightforward and fairly easy if you go to class and take notes. Doing the reading is important though because the weekly quizzes are harder than his tests. The biggest part of your grade though is three papers. Dr. Parry is really funny, very knowledgeable, and absolutely insightful.
Awesome professor, easy class. TAKE IT.
Easy tests. Boring lectures. Required attendance on Friday Labs to take the quizzes. Grades the final portfolio of 3 1 page papers way too hard! Overall not my favorite teacher ever.
Would have said this was easy a week ago, but he just graded our final papers. Graded them way too hard! Dropped my grade 8 points and will now most likely keep me from a scholarship. Needs to realize that not all of us are humanities or english majors! Tests are easy, but the final paper is more important. If you want an A, be a great writer!
Dr Parry's class is alright. If you read cliffnotes or do the reading you will get an A without going to class, except for the lectures on art, you need the notes for those for the tests. The tests are easy, the weekly quizes too if you read. The papers are kinda tricky, you have to write what he wants.
His teaching style didn't work for me. I found myself falling asleep almost every class period (which I never do). I was unsure all semester what to write the final papers about, and it was never really made clear. Overall, not the best class.
Dr. Parry is a really wonderful teacher. He is very eloquent and knowledgeable. He assigned us to read a lot of wonderful books, we had weekly reading quizzes on what we had read, two easy midterms, and three one-page papers. Easy A if you take the time to read the books and pay attention in class.
He really wants you to learn how to think in the field of humanities but his teaching style really doesn't accomplish this. and he grades the portfolio really harshly because he wants you to think up something he has never heard (btw he has doctorate, masters, and bachelor degrees, nbd). also some of his TAs are AWFUL
I really enjoyed this class. His teaching style may not be for everyone, but I found him very easy to listen to. He really wants the students to enjoy the subject actively. Not too much work, just stay on top of reading - don't get behind at all. There is a lot of reading. I'd suggest this prof, I'll be taking 201 from him.
The class requires heavy reading. Dr. Parry is interesting and very respectful of different cultures and ideas. He really knows what he is talking about.
Haaaated this class, probably because I'm not a humanities nerd. I felt most of the literary "masterpieces" that we read were filled with smut. Condescending, he accused me of plagiarizing my ideas in the portfolio. Said my papers were "too scholarly" for the scope of the class. Sorry I'm not as dumb as you want me to be. Elitist expectations.
Lectures were unorganized but were very interesting to listen to. The exams throughout the semester were really easy but 30 plus percent is based on the 3 essays due at the end, so its difficult to say how I will do... Overall an enjoyable class.
Dr. Parry is a cool guy; he's not afraid to say things that are usually taboo at BYU (in a good way). But DO NOT take this class if you don't enjoy writing papers. 3 of them are half your grade. I skipped class 2/3 of the semester and got A's on the tests though. You NEED to do the reading; those failed quizzes'll haunt you. HATE PAPERS=HATE CLASS.
Dr. Parry is an intelligent, compassionate, knowledgeable and sincere professor. He is heavily invested in the material itself but just as interested in inspiring love for the subject matter in his students. He is thoughtful and open-minded. Definitely my favorite professor at BYU.
Professor Parry really helped me get into the subject. There are quizzes once a week, so make sure to do the readings. The tests aren't that hard, but make sure you know about all the things on the study guide. He is willing to help you out on the three papers that you have to do, so take advantage of that.
Dr. Parry knows everything about anything. He offers great insights and shocks you with how much he knows. He also has a witty sense of humor. It's really great. He likes to get to know his students and really cares about their learning. 3 papers, he grades tough. Tests and quizzes are easy though, so long as you do the readings and can memorize.
My favorite professor at BYU! Dr. Parry is approachable, insightful, and knows something about everything. Tests are 50pts multiple choice and easy, mainly memorization. 3 essays, 1-2 page single spaced, half of your grade. He grades fairly. Wrote my 3 essays a couple days before the end of the semester, got an A.
Attendance is mandatory because there are pop quizzes once a week. He loves the subject but he goes off on tangents... A LOT. Luckily he really cares about his students and doesn't make his tests too hard. The papers were stressful and the pop quizzes were difficult at times, so it's important to pay attention. Okay professor.
Great class, highly recommended to fulfill a general credit! Quizzes are once a week in lab, so be sure to do the readings for the week (or at least read the spark notes!). Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you aren't going to do the reading then I would definitely go to lecture and take good notes!
I really enjoyed this class. I know a lot of people who didn't, but I personally thought it was very interesting. Professor Parry is extremely insightful. Just read the textbook/stories (use sparknotes) and write down everything he says in class and you'll get all A's on the tests. Don't procrastinate journals! Do them as you go!
Dr. Parry is a wonderful teacher. He knows his stuff and is passionate about it. The class has a lot of reading, but be sure to do it for the weekly quizzes. Tests are way easy if you just read and pay attention in lecture.
For this class: Go to lecture!!! and pay attention. He often gives out ideas of what will be on the Friday quiz in class. Assignments: 10 quiz scores (2 will be dropped out of twelve). 10 one page (single spaced) papers- pretty easy and the TA's will give you feedback. 2 exams and a final. Final is not comprehensive. Perry is great. Do the reading!
60+ pages of reading per week and weekly quizzes (non-multiple choice) with just 5 questions. You have to read and go to boring lectures where he just rambles to do well on the quizzes. The 3 tests are easy and everyone gets similar grades. It's the insight journal (10 entries) that determines7 your grade. The TA's are ruthless graders, so beware.
The lectures were sometimes dull but other times interesting. You take a 5 question quiz every friday with TAs. (easy!) A LOT OF READING! textbook is slow! Test are EASY. BUT you also have to write 10 half page papers and the TAs are mean hard graders! I liked this class and got an A by studying so its not impossible.
Excellent. Parry is flexible and picks great profs to present. Embraces different viewpoints and keeps discussion lively. Sensitive to issues facing the church today. Very helpful too.
Main portion of grade comes from a "Great Question" journal. Absolutely DO NOT leave the journal to the last minute. I really enjoyed his class though, he is a good speaker and has interesting lectures. Sometimes an assignment would be confusing but he was happy to help whenever there was a question. Exams and final require substantial studying.
He is a funny, entertaining speaker. He's really interesting in teaching critical thinking (I'm preparing for the MCAT, and this class is good training for VR). I didn't find the quizzes and final as easy as others did- I really had to study hard. Even so an A was definitely possible and he'll bend over backwards to help students.
Dr. Parry tends to ramble a lot. Sometimes it's hard for me to follow his lectures. Most of the time I feel like my time is wasted in his class. I've talked to a lot of students who feel the same way. It's an easy class - you only write one page papers every other week - I just find the class extremely boring.
I did not like this class at all. Though, I'm not sure if it was the class itself or Dr. Perry's approach on it that made it so unappealing. Definitely wants you to put a LOT of work in
Interesting class, confusing lectures. Gets you to be more open-minded, though!
Dr. Parry is nice, but lectures were mostly tangential. I got the impression that even he wasn't sure what he was talking about. We were ill-equipped to handle the topics "explored" in class, so papers and discussions were highly superficial. I love the idea of the honors program, but this class was so disappointing I'm not continuing in it.
Dr. Parry was a pretty good professor. You really need to show up for lectures. The majority of your grades are based off of your almost weekly one page papers (you need to submit a rough draft and a final page) and the passport assignments. The problem I have with Parry is that he is concerned mostly with philosophy which can be less clear-cut.
Honors 120 was an interesting class to say the least. Dr. Parry is very entertaining when he goes on long rants. Just know that the TA's grade pretty much all your work, so that can be discouraging sometimes.
Such a hard class, especially after my expectations from 201. If you don't have background in the subject, he isn't going to help you, which is dumb since it's a general. It seems impossible to get in his good graces, since he might not have any. Very difficult course, not sure if it's worth the double-dip Civ/Letters credit.
This class should only be taken if you want to double count Bio and Letters. Otherwise its completely pointless. I did appreciate the different view of global warming GMO and evolution. I also did enjoy the books we had to read, but the teachers(Yes there are two teachers) have long boring lectures about the books.
You've got to have an open mind, especially when what is discussed in class goes against the beliefs you were raised with. If you participate and voice your thoughts, be ready to be instantly shut down and told you're wrong. He tells you that there isn't a "should" or "should not" in the class, but he still tells you that you're still wrong.
He gets up and talks for two hours. Usually never about what you want to learn. The most useful part was the final review with the TA. However, that being said, his class is really easy. Essays periodically than a simple final. Easy grade, not much learning done. And if you want to keep up with reading, it's insane, and not worth it.
Professor is great and teaches well. But he has a low voice and late in the afternoon in a dark classroom... It was often hard to pay attention. There is a ton of reading but it isn't really necessary, just recommend. All old philosophy so its hard to understand. If you like philosophy, go for it. If you want and easy general, look elsewhere.
I can see why some people might not like Dr. Parry. He can talk a lot, but I have him in a smaller class, and He takes quite a bit of feedback from class members. You may also dislike his propensity to talk about controversial and uncomfortable subjects, but that's one of the reasons I like him. I love the way he challenges my worldview every day.
This is just a lecture class, so all you need to do is show up and write a response paper about the guest lecturers. Expectations are super clear and full points awarded for completion. Good opportunity to explore philosophy in a low-stakes way. It's a pass/fail class and only one credit, so pretty straightforward. Parry is great!
Your grade is just weekly papers and a final essay and test. You really don't have to do the readings and you should still be able to participate in the class discussions. He encourages a lot of discussion - even on uncomfortable subjects - but that's philosophy. He also gives great feedback on the papers and it's not hard to do well
Parry is a good professor who knows what he is talking about (even if his lectures can get a bit boring). He tries to encourage discussions in class and is respectful of everyone's opinion. There is a lot of reading for the class and only a few assignments-- 8 journals and 2 tests. He's a pretty easy grader and is very accessible outside class.
Dr. Parry is so kind! His lectures tended to be boring for me but I still enjoyed class due to his obvious care for his students and the subject. I would recommend him as a professor but be prepared for heavy reading from 3 different textbooks. The class is graded on only a few assignments but the written aspects are not graded too difficultly.
JOEEEEE!! Theres just something about Dr. Parry that I absolutely love. He expects A LOT of reading but if were being honest you can get by with minimal effort. I happen to think his lectures are awesome and you get a lot of cool life lessons out of them. Hes not for everyone but I loved his class. Exams arent too hard either.
Dr. Parry is so kind and incredible! He knows so much about the humanities and obviously loves it and his students! I love his classes.
I LOVED this class with Dr. Parry. There's quite a bit of reading, but it's very manageable even with little effort. Exams have a clear study guide & journal entries aren't bad either. I'd recommend studying for exams with a friend or two, it really helps. I felt like lectures were always interesting and I had a lot of fun going to class.
Overall, Dr. Parry is a good choice for a humanities class taken as a general. Hes very passionate about what he teaches, the TAs are very helpful, and the exams are very doable with the thorough study guide he gives. Personally, I felt he went on a lot of tangents that distracted from class and expected this class to be a top priority of of ours.
Dr. Parry is AMAZING--I've taken multiple of his classes simply because he makes a point to help you out if you have any accessibility issues, and he'll tell you on the first day that he knows what it's like. He cares about you so, so much and loves to hear what you have to say. If you work hard he'll love you for it. I love his notes on my papers!
Professor Parry is very respectful of other peoples opinions but I will say if you dont want to know his opinion, dont take this class. He is very outspoken about his political views and randomly trying to relate them to the 1700s. The class is really easy though and as long as you participate you get credit. & The insight journals are easy.
Gives you NO feedback on critical assignments that are worth a significant portion of your grade (like 60% kind of big for one assignment). Grades you on your own insights that you gained from the class, again with no feedback on why you get the grade you got. Really unfair. Provides no direction on how to improve. TAs were also not helpful at all!
Dr. Parry is a great guy, his social commentary in class is 10/10. Just show up, read the directions on assignments, and do the study guide - you'll get an A
Dr. Parry is hands down the best professor I've ever had at BYU. His perspective is so powerful, and his love for his students is palpable. He gives his students a lot of freedom when it comes to his assignments and his lectures are always enjoyable.
Dr. Parry is a homie fr
So much reading. His lectures are a little boring but he is a really nice guy and he is a reasonable grader.
Prof. Parry is great, but his teaching style was not very structured. He likes to take tangents often. There's a Zoom class option. Don't do it. You will not pay attention. Tests are matching questions, free-response artwork ID, and multiple mini-essays (you can write beforehand). Most of the grade is your final 3 essays, so get ready to write.
Professor Parry is the most helpful person ever. He cares about your success and will do anything to help you pass the class. I had certain circumstances that made the class difficult but we met several times and he made accommodations better than the accessibility center could ever.
Professor Parry is by far one of the best humanities professors I have had at BYU. If you are looking for a class that will be an easy A, this class would not guarantee that, however Doctor Parry will give you every resource to help you succeed in his class. He is extremely easy to reach out to and meet with and is extremely helpful in office hours
ok I saw these ratings and was scared to take this class. This is the BEST ihum 202 class I have seen and taken. I have heard of these classes being super hard, and time consuming as it covers 2 generals. It can be boring, but there is a zoom for class and he prepares you well for the tests...you just fill in the study guide. BEST CHOICE
Dr. Parry is a very nice man who clearly wants his students to succeed. His class has a ton of readings. Attendance at lectures is mandatory. His lectures can be boring, and he tends to ramble a lot, but he also practically gives you the test beforehand so it is worth it.
I did not feel like these ratings adequately prepared me for what to expect from Dr. Parry. I kept a running list of the wild, inappropriate, and disrespectful things he said in class. The class was an easy A and Dr. Parry is a nice guy, but I think many students left the class totally disinterested in taking a class in the humanities again.
I was worried about the workload because of all the reading. However, Dr. Parry's lectures give you all the info you need, despite the hard texts. You are basically graded by exams that he gives you questions to in advance, three papers due at the end of the semester, and attendance points. Would take again for sure. He's a homie fr.
He sounds like Thomas S. Monson and so when he says words like "sexy" it's hilarious LOTS of reading, lots of memorization, doesn't give out study guide very far in advance. Start the final assignment early, its 3 papers. Class is always available on zoom so that was awesome. He was very accommodating and kind!
Dr. Parry is incredibly kind and loves to have discussions in class. He can get a little lecture heavy, but he is one of the most caring profs I've had. He will always make time to meet with you and answer your questions and loves tying in current events or pop culture into the humanities. Really recommend.
Coursework is fair, but lectures are often derailed by personal commentary. Parry makes concerning remarks about women, minorities, and Christians that many students find inappropriate, creating an uncomfortable environment and distracting from learning. If you dislike left-wing politics in a non-political setting, look for a different professor!
Class was cancelled 4 weeks before the end of the semester due to complaints from students. Professor went on long religious and political tangents and was disrespectful to those who believed differently. Besides that, you'll answer an attendance question every class that is graded harshly, have 2 fairly easy exams, 4 textbooks, and a final paper.
As mentioned in other reviews, Dr. Parry cancelled class 3 weeks before the end of the year, due to a huge negative response to his lectures. He is very tangential, and often talks about things that don't have to do with the class. There is a LOT of reading, 3 exams, and a paper. He also requires a $30 software to answer participation questions...
People be crying too much, he is not a bad professor. There was one specific incident he apologized for and it was sincere. People get offended when you disagree with them. Ignore some of the latest ratings.
Dr. P is genuine & funny. His whole mission is to develop wisdom, compassion, & understanding. I learned a lot & as long as you listen to the lectures & do a little prep work outside class, you'll be good. Everyone has their own opinion, so don't get offended cause we're adults in college now. Let's just be kind. He's a great guy
Dr Parry was a fun professor to take a class from. He brought a different perspective to the way I saw the Humanities and I loved every lecture I was able to attend. He has his flaws, we all do and I am sad that people come here under the cover of anonymity to defame and complain about him because his opinions differ from yours. Please Do Better.
I know recent ratings are based on an incident from class, but to speak more generally this class had attendance questions every class that were graded pretty harshly & graded on a software that costs $30. Long readings before class but its Humanities so I expected that. Easy tests but they don't count for much of your grade and a big final paper.
