Boring, useless prof. IR but could have been anecdotes 101 (with about a quarter of the anecdotes remotely relating to politics) Fairly easy though just essay you can make up for final.
Interesting prof. Very prone to tangents. Irritable up close. Informative, brilliant and quite funny. He really does want everyone to do well and thats a plus. A lot of reading is required though.
This teacher is horrible. I'm usually an optimistic person, but he made me switch my major (Public Admin) because i hated that class so much. If you take this course, sit at the very front, ask lots of questions and dont take notes word for word. He goes off on random tangents, stay focused on info, rather than anecdotes that come with it.wierd bod
Incredibly knowledgable in the topic of public administration. Doesn't always seem overly dedicated but still delivers intelligent lectures and lessons. He gets off on tangents and is an interesting guy to talk to during breaks. He is also fairly tough but fair. I enjoyed this course and his class!
Very boring class, does not use powerpoint which makes information difficult to follow. Has interesting ancedotes and isn't a bad professor but he is very boring. Changed my major from public admin after this class
Knows what he is talking about. By no means expect easy marks, he will make you work. Lectures may seem dry but you will learn. Discussion groups were great and fun to partake in. DO NOT talk or interrupt his class in any way. EVER. He will not hesitate to call you out and proceed to rip you to pieces.
Miserable professor. Has an ego so large I'm surprised his head fits in the door. Is extremely biased in his presentation of material - lampooned post-structuralism for 75min instead of teaching us about it. Thank goodness for my TA, or I would have done quite poorly in that class.
Awful professor. Doesn't use any powerpoints and doesn't like students to bring laptops. Talks fast and gets off topic often. You spend the entire class scrambling to write down what he says. This makes studying for the exam difficult. He seems to know what he's talking about, but isn't very good at passing this knowledge onto his students. Avoid!
Can't understand him, needs notes, knows what he's talking about though.
not a bad prof, don't mind his way of lecturing, tells you what he's going to talk about at the beginning of the class, and follows accordingly. he also gives exam questions ahead of time, so as long as you take good notes, exam should be easy as pie. but he is still hard marking and expects a lot from you
The professor was patient kind and very accomodating to myself as a whole and it was a pleasure working with him.
Roman is very hard to understanding because he talks very quickly. I would recommend not to take any classes with him because if your not a girl he does not like you.
He lectures without notes, so if you attend class and can type you will do fine in his class. He is an interesting lecturer, which is great because you will remember. If you have poor attendance you will likely fail his class, show up and take notes, you will do well.
His class was challenging, but I learned more from his introductory class in public administration than I did in any second or third year PAP class. If you want to learn, take his class. If you want to slack off for the easy A, take someone else. If you study, you will do fine.
Best professor ever. He inspired me to change my major to Public Administration from Economics. Made the lectures very engaging. You need to attend class in order to do well and to keep up with all readings. If you can do this, you have yourself a fairly decent grade.
He can be quite arrogant during lectures, however, if you talk to him during office hours, he is totally different. Very helpful when it comes to re-marking assignments that TA's screwed up. He does speak very fast, and doesn't use virtual campus. If you don't show up to class, expect to fail!
Is extremely strict with the outlines he gives for papers to the point where you want to rip your hair out. Very arrogant and pessimistic during lectures. Did like that he spoke loudly and clearly unlike a lot of other professors at uOttawa.
THE WORST. I dread this class ... He is arrogant, cocky, disrespectful and seems to have no clue what he's talking about. He often jumps back and forth because he forgets his place. Do not take a class with this man ... Unless you love being miserable.
Definitely a bright guy, but does not know how to break down lectures. The worst part is that studying for the exam will be a nightmare considering that his notes are unrelated, unorganized, and most importantly bogged down with irrelevant info. This class is an unnecessary headache
If this is not a compulsory course for you, transfer out. He is brilliant & knows the material but he does not know how to teach. He is unorganized in his teaching approach. This makes taking notes a complete nightmare. The final is going to be a disaster. Save yourself the headache and drop it. Does not provide pp slides/guideline to study!
Really regretting taking this class. He will say "this is done in three ways, first..." and never have a clear second or third point. Lectures are very hard to follow, made worse by no virtual campus. He does call out the obnoxious kid in the class though, which is awesome..
This was an elective for me and I really regret taking it. The lectures are dry with no guidelines other than three points on the chalk board. He rambles on and on and it is difficult to know what he wants students to focus on. Plus, if you are five minutes late on the due date of an assignment, he WILL GIVE YOU A ZERO! completely unreasonable!!!
Extremely condescending and disrespectful towards students. Does not respond to emails, no virtual campus and no lecture slides, so very difficult to get in touch with and even more difficult to follow his scattered lectures.
He's a fairly easy marker. He's a good lecturer, but I dislike him. He is very rude, he this he's a god, and makes his students feel worthless. He bad mouths Federal workers a lot. I would not take this prof. I had him for another class next semester I dropped it even though he's an easy marker. You will hate whatever class he teaches.
In the beginning I hated this class; the more I attended the more I learned to love the class. There is no virtual campus which ensures you attend class. This has grown to be my favourite class, he calls out the annoying kid, and he’s super easy on the eyes ;) 8/10 in the look department.. Not joking..
Don't come to his class if you want an easy mark, come if you want to learn and have a real person in the front of the class telling you real things and real opinions about the real world. Life is hard and he is too, but you learn a bunch of stuff with him... btw, extremelly helpfull in his office hours!
The class is an interesting class however his lectures are hard to follow if you are not familiar with his lecture and note taking style of teaching. You must go to class because he does not use VC. I found the readings very helpful and related to the class well. He is very intelligent and you can learn alot in this class.
Deffinatly my favourit prof, learned the most in his class. Hes very well educated on public admin, and is an extreamly real prof.
You do not need to attend class just read the text. It's more helpful than the prof. The papers and dgd are easy, but he did not give us any hint as to what will be on the exam.
He knows a lot of information! Very helpful when you see him in office hours! Barely answers emails, thinks his opinion is the only one that matters! Was very rude to some of the students in our class.
have no idea if he is a hard marker because the TA marked everything... he is so rude and pretentious it makes it really hard to like his class, interesting or not. Can't get distracted during his class cause he talks about a mile per minute with no lecture slides or anything... I REALLY HATED HIM THATS ABOUT IT
such an inspirational prof.Love his class, deffinatly learned the most in his class.
Awful! Condescending, arrogant, but scattered and disorganized, disrespectful, does not prepare lectures well and then is super demanding of his students. Not helpful at all. Terrible, terrible.
Pretty good prof overall. Assignments are fairly easy, just make sure to follow directions carefully and you will be fine. Lectures are convoluted, but really quite interesting. I did not do any of the readings and did very well, just go to class and take notes. Very helpful outside of class as well, take advantage!
Very difficult to follow, especially as he did not use slides. Assignment expectations were very vague. Marking for final exam was very objective. Not approachable (no people skills). Knew his material but could not communicate it. Would not recommend this professor.
Did not direct us whatsoever towards what was expected for midterm or exam, readings irrelevant and not even mentioned in work... hard to follow lectures and very moody teacher.
This professor rambles too often and generally seems unprepared for the lectures. Class attendance is mandatory as he doesn't not use virtual campus/slideshows. His one redeeming qualities is that he lets you choose your own essay topic. The final exam was random so study everything (even the little details).
He may be rude, difficult and often go off on tangents - but he is one of the most knowledgeable profs I have had. He does speak his opinion, and makes it clear, but does not grade you poorly for disagreeing so long as your arguments sufficiently address the issue. If you're looking for a nice guy don't bother, but looking to learn? Go for it!
doesn't use slides, stands there and talks about everything in no order. Impossible to follow and difficult to take notes worth studying.
Roman is not a friendly professor. Don not come to class and expect him to be your best friend. However, you can expect to get a full and educating lecture from him. He is very open with his opinion, but he is also always willing to hear students opinion and feedback so long as you have enough information to prove your side of the argument!
He was the worst prof I ever had. I was not interested in going to class at all. I found him very egoistic and rude when it came to students suggestions and questions. Does not care about the students he teaches.
Roman is a hero. He's reasonable if you talk to him one on one and you're not a try hard hipster that thinks a tie and a sweater vest gives them all the political knowledge in the world. Sometimes he'll give you the questions to the exam but if he doesn't then there is a lot of material to go through for the exam. Overall hilarious and really clear
What an ego, widely known to be one of the worst poli sci professors at UofO.
Kind of a D-bag, really arrogant and doesnt use slides or blackboard. Be sure to write your essay outlines in paragraph form and not bullet points. Exam questions: Merit principle, sponsorship scandal, fiscal crisis of the state, Weber's features of bureaucracy, executive and legislature relationship, and a 6th i cant rmember
I would avoid taking this class with Roman if you don't need to. He is a very arrogant person and it doesn't really seem like he has any interest in the success of his students. He is a decent lecturer, but he is not clear on A LOT of things and expects that everyone basically knows it all already. The final was not representative of the course.
Being a first year Public Administration major, this course was my first look into what I will be studying for the next 4 years. Roman's class was a huge disappointment and has made me reconsider my choice of major. Does not use slides or blackboard. Does not speak loud enough to be heard through entire class. Not helpful at all. Such a let down.
Goes on tangents, slides are switched too fast, and hard to follow his lectures since his points are not in order. Doesn't seam to care about his students. Avoid at all costs!
he's really pretentious and thinks he is god because he is always right and you are wrong. he is very rude and doesnt care about anyone else. he doesnt use slides neither blackbored and he talks very fast, which makes things worse. JUST DONT WASTE MONEY AND TIME WITH HIM !
Hardly enjoyed taking this class. Professor Roman was arrogant and rude. He was very poor at explaining. Also, the prof. makes insensitive remarks at racial minorities.
Professor is difficult to follow and creates a very intimidating atmosphere in the class. Dismisses or refuses to answer many questions. Knows his stuff well, but lectures are confusing and much too long. Standards for evaluation are unclear, and does not indicate what students will be tested on. Did not enjoy Roman as a professor.
Despite what I've read here, he's actually not a bad guy. Sure, he doesn't use slides which is a bit difficult, but he's good at what he does. Very good at tying recent events into the course (i.e. the Rob Ford situation. Can be arrogant but also funny at times. Not my favourite prof, but he's alright.
THIA PROF IS TERRIBLE. He simply talks throughout the class and you have to take notes on what you think is important. When it comes to his essays he marks easy but his exam is brutal, I promise you. He does not tell you what you should know for at all so you have to basically memorize 50 pages of notes.
The one good thing I'll say about Roman's class is that he knows his stuff. Having said that, I hated going to his class. His essay topics hardly related to the course and he actually lied about what would be on the exam - he told us to study things that ended up not being on the exam. Avoid him like the plague
If you go to class and DGDs, and hand in the essay you will do well. Class attendance isn't mandatory, but you have to go because he doesn't post any slides/notes whatsoever. Clear about what would be on the exams. Prof is pretty arrogant and narcissistic, but the content of the class is okay.
took his globalization class, he is arrogant and provides unrelated and untrue information as a fact. Memorize his opinion and you will do well, which is not to difficult. bad prof worst person
Can be difficult to handle at times but he is a very knowledgeable and fair prof. It's very much a give and take relationship, you will have no problem if you work hard and are honest. Guaranteed to learn lots in this course.
Really fun seminar and really interesting readings. Prof was knowledgeable and interactive had really great discussions. No problems with arrogance, was open and respected well back up ideas, and also actively engaged in responding to them.
One of the worst professors I have had at uOttawa. Lectures were difficult to follow, and expectations were incredibly vague with regards to assignments and examinations. Professor was arrogant and unapproachable. Would not recommend.
By far the worst prof I have ever had at uOttawa. Completely useless at giving feedback or helping, has a terrible attitude, belittles students and comes across as lacking knowledge and unable to answer any questions asked of him. Avoid at ALL costs.
While he is narcissistic he does know what he is talking about. He relates current events fairly well and his crude humor isn't exactly politically correct, but it's edgy and controversial which makes it more engaging. He doesn't put slides on Blackboard, so you have to take notes lecture style. Overall, good prof if you can handle his personality.
He's definitely a narcissist and has a tendency to pass off opinion as fact. But he has a lot of knowledge to impart and he can be funny at times (even if it is a little forced now and then). If he was teaching another class that I needed to take, I'd sign up based on his easy marking alone.
Not sure why all these reviews are so negative. Funny prof that makes lectures interesting and enjoyable. Highly recommend this prof! You must attend lectures as the questions are almost purely from them. Would definitely take a class from him again!
There are far more accomplished professors with more published material and influence than Roman. Many of them don't teach well. Roman will be honest, for better or worse, and he's able to deliver an EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE lecture. GO TO CLASS. It's not about him being a nice guy, it's about how much you stand to gain. Check your ego at the door.
he takes some effort to understand, but once you do you will realize he knows a lot, try and go to his office hours, ask questions, and you should be fine
Awesome prof, really enjoyed his lectures! Funny and covers everything that is needed. Slides are straight to the point and very clear on what is expected. Definitely recommend!
Roman is one of the best professors in Canada. A lot people will complain that he doesn't hold your hand through the course, but it really helps you adapt for upper year classes IMO. Very knowledgeable. Roman is love. Roman is life.
This professor is the worst at uOttawa. I went in for office hours and he was on the phone the whole time, he cut me off when I was trying to explain my rough draft and told me he'd only give me a C if he was feeling generous. He's horrible and mean!
Honestly, worst teacher ever. Thinks he is god, does not want to see you succeed and takes off letter grades for anything on assignments and essays. All material on his slides, which are full of text and make you pretty much rush all class to get everything down before he switches. AVOID AT ALL COST P.S. Rips on Québec all the time....
Be ready to work for your grade. Attendance is mandatory as he does not use Blackboard. Syllabus is very detailed, familiarize yourself with it; all details for papers are in it. Got a mediocre grade on the first assignment, but no feedback for improvement. Went to office hours, not helpful at all. Makes uncomfortable jokes in attempt to be funny.
I enjoyed his character, but that's it. Final was BRUTAL. 120 trick questions(all right, but which one is the most). You HAVE to study a lot for his final. Essays were easy and easily graded. Again, fear the final, because i was never ready for such a hard and precise test on 50 pages of written notes. GO TO CLASS and READ THE BOOK!!
Joseph is awful, i had him for 2 courses in 1 semester and his marks alone made my CGPA plummet. Im trying to do all of you who are debating taking his class a favour- DO NOT. His exams are complete trick questions (including one that stated it was a trick question) & dates and expects you to memorize essentially everything. NOT helpful or fair
The class was okay, however the final exam was needlessly difficult.
He's rough around the edges but once you get past that, Roman's a pretty cool guy. Having said that, his class is hard and he will make you work for it. But you will learn in his class. Like most professors, he tries to make jokes and sometimes they are in poor taste - if you are one of those people who gets offended at anything, go somewhere else.
Roman's lectures are clear and interesting. He understands the subject matter really well. Treat this as a history class and you can do really well. (POLI2101) (ie understand the connections) If you want to be successful, utilize his office hours, but don't use it as a time to get answers from him, instead come prepared and exchange ideas.
He knows a lot about his subject but unfortunately struggles to convey that to students in an interesting manner. Lectures consisted of 3 hour long power point presentations that I could have read at home in bed and done just as well. Thats if he had bothered to put them online, which he didn't, so you have to attend unfortunately. Can't recommend.
He is very knowledgeable and has the potential to be a great professor but does not seem to care about teaching or his students. I recommend that he pays more attention to his students and speak slower during the lectures so the students can get a better grasp of the material. Powerpoint slides in his case would be helpful for students.
Terrible Prof. Very arrogant. Apparently there is no one smarter or better looking than him. He passes off his biased opinions as fact. I was a big fan of Roman until I realized that he is not helpful in office hours, condescending and rude to students. He takes a whole grade point off for small errors on assignments. Avoid at all costs.
Please stay away from him. If you're stuck in his class sit at the back and make sure he doesn't see you. Just stay away for your own sake. Drop out of university but don't take his class.
Literally the rudest and most arrogant human being I've ever met. Even worse when he's teaching he picks on students, is constantly condescending and harsh... He doesn't post his notes and he speaks fast with assumption of class understanding even on new concepts. He's knowledgable but so awful as a teacher
Roman is a Professor that MANY 1st and some 2nd year students will not enjoy taking as he does not go beyond his job description whereas other "nice" profs will He gives you precise direction that is up to you to follow. He is a wealth of knowledge with a bold personality (which he has no problem admitting to) He runs his classes like upperyear one
This is a professor that does not go beyond reading his slides or repeating what is on his slides. ( Having a robot do the same thing would be more interesting) He puts tones of information on the slides a scrolls down as fast as he can. He definitely need to go back to teaching school! a white sheet of paper has a more approachable personality.
Terrible Professor. He refuses to use blackboard and isn't very helpful. He has an attitude which clearly indicates that he does not care about the students. I would highly recommend to avoid him as much as possible.
Very difficult multiple choice - lots of trick questions. For an INTRO class to Public Admin, lots of information to process. Does not use blackboard. If you miss a few slides, or even worse, miss a class entirely, good luck getting notes - prof lectures extremely quickly and does not go back on slides. Class average on midterms were around 50-60%
Easily one of the worst profs at uOttawa. Doesn't use blackboard, tests are full of trick questions and weighted heavily (20 questions worth 20% of mark etc.). Roman's lectures are straight from the textbook and puts way too much information on the slides. Very condescending. Avoid at all costs.
Absolutely terrible, trick questions, too much information on slides, no direction other than KNOW EVERYTHING. Not a great prof for an intro to public administration. He may better for upper year classes but I wouldn't risk it.
Refused to talk to students after class. Told us to meet at office hours. He didn't even show up. 10 people waiting for this teacher that did not show up to his own office hours. Avoid
AVOID AT ALL COST! Seriously though, he's the worst prof I ever had. He's arrogant, full of himself, has no respect for students at all, and just a kind of prof that you cannot find any decency. He was often late and the exams were just horrible. Take the same course at Carleton and transfer over to uOttawa!!
Roman is Roman. Get use to it. Do the readings, write an actual paper with actual arguments and actual evidence and youll get an A. I didnt even do the all of the readings, I just read the slides and got A. There are 2 midterms, first one is 15 question, second is 20. Pretty easy. Got A- on both. Final exam is long but easy if you read the slides.
Best professor at the University. students like myself have written bad reviews about him however now I understand why he made me work so hard. because there are no other teacher that did I thank him
No notes online. NOT a fan of public servants (irony apparent in a course about the public service). Awkward and fidgety in class, but attendance is a must unless you've got friends in the class to get notes from.
Terrible teacher, super boring, and doesn't convey subject matter effectively
Do not recommend. A black mark on all Professor's and to human decency. will violate the basic moral codes.. There were hundreds of readings, a handful of specific questions you cant answer without cheating, and a mediocre grade awaits you at the end. perhaps you'll fail because of him. don't take him.
Terrible professor. He almost failed all the women in the class. He is rude and insulting. Avoid at all costs.
I personally didn't mind Roman. He's humour is a bit jaded, on top of being straightforward and blunt, but I found him entertaining. He marks a bit on the harder side, but nothing unreasonable. His "trick questions" are easy to spot if you understand the concepts and theories, and Roman expects a proper paper.
You should definitely avoid this professor if you can. His multiple choice tests are very difficult and full of trick questions. He's also rude and arrogant. I really don't think he wants his students to succeed. For those that said that it was easy and they didn't study, props to you because I can't relate to that at all. Just avoid him to be safe
You can tell the reviews the prof gives himself on here. They are all "i hated him at first" and now "he is a saint, and the best prof in the history of the world"
Honestly, a very knowledgeable professor. If you are going to ask a question during a lecture, make sure he has not already talked about it, and that it is a logical question. Print-off your papers early and hand them in on-time.
Not always fond of his attitude, but he is undeniably knowledgeable. Gave us a lot of info that I can refer back to as I pursue a job in politics. -- Also, loved the way he shat on English-Canada's cuisine on the last day. It had to be done lol.
His reading off the slides can be a little boring at times but he's a funny guy and I genuinely enjoyed the class. If he roasts you in class it's because you asked a stupid question. Midterm was 20 multiple choice with 40 minutes to do which was decent if you studied enough
While I enjoyed his lectures, he packs too much into each topic so after I get home from class I can't remember what I just learned. I understand that he is trying to give us the full picture, but I had 96 pages of notes to study for the final. The final is 6 short answers making it hard to study for and everything you ay wrong you lose 0.1 marks.
I really did not enjoy his class. He reads off the slides, he doesn't know the answers to questions students ask, he's arrogant and he wants his students to fail. His multiple choice questions are trick questions and his final did not have enough questions on it. If I could go back, I would have taken the class with a different professor.
Stay on his good side bc yes it will benefit you. Not kind to people who ask questions. Definitely knows his stuff, but sometimes hard to respect his ways. Papers are graded fairly, but holy that exam was unnecessarily hard (2 walkouts during the exam.. one yelling). Next to no exam prep help.
Not one good thing I can say about Roman. He was uninformed on the course material & condescending to students. He was not able to answer any questions in class & dismissed them as if the students questions were stupid and unrelated when often they weren't. He doesn't post the slides nor use them in class. I do not recommend him.
This class was unnecessarily hard. Avoid him at ALL costs. Average for the midterm below 50 on a 20 m/c test and highest grade was 80. At the start I thought he's not as bad as people say but nope, he is terrible. Doesn't show to his office hours and he can't even use Blackboard. He claimed it was the technology, not him. I dropped the class.
Avoid him at all costs, political science classes are not easy but he makes it unnecessarily difficult like he has a grudge against students, a prof that forgot what it is to be a student. No blackboards, no powerpoints, get ready to type 70+ pages of notes for his final and still feel like you haven't paid attention. Narcissistic.
He gave some of the best lectures I have ever had, always interesting. After that he makes the class very hard, doesnt help students and seems to enjoy when his students fail
Worst class i've taken as an undergrad. The lecture material is simple enough but overdone with a lot of details that aren't relevant - this becomes hell when studying for the cumulative final. He didn't post any of the lecture slides anywhere - doesn't use BB, nor did he use them in class. Gives no feedback on exams or papers. AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN
Do not take him. He was very unclear about assignment expectations but had very specific criteria for marking. You could lose a mark for forgetting a staple or for forgetting to put an accent on his name. He does not use Blackboard or post slides. He's very condescending and doesn't want to help students. He seems to enjoy watching them fail.
Go to class and listen for what he understands as important, write a lot of notes. He stopped showing his pp slides to the class half way through the semester, and did not provide the pp's on blackboard. Read the textbook and your notes because his lectures are based on the book. Tough class but he was straight up about a lot of issues
Prof Roman is very particular about the little things (ie. indenting on a paper, showing up on time) but if you abide by those simple, but specific rules, his class isn't hard. I didn't bother buying the textbook since he took most of the exam material from his lectures and I still got an A. Show up, take notes and listen and you'll be just fine!
to sum him up - i tried to talk to him after class one day when it was obvious i had been crying and he wouldn't even lift his head up to look at me or listen to my concerns. don't expect an ounce of understanding or sympathy from him - any other political science prof him.
Awful professor. Avoid him... if you have to take the course hes teaching, dont take it. Wait until the following semester. Hes condescending, and makes everything unnecessarily difficult. You will not do well in his class, no matter how hard you try. Hes just so brutal.
I would avoid Prof Roman if getting a high grade is your priority. He grades pretty hard, however you get a lot of points from little things like formatting. If you want a charged lecture packed with information then this is the prof for you.
This prof is exceedingly negative and does not even make an effort to teach in an impartial way. He is always talking about how everywhere sucks. The textbook he chose for this class is easily the worst textbook i have ever used. It is not to the point, does not well describe the concepts and goes on in very roundabout ways.
Probably one of the worst professors I have had. Do not take his class. He is so unorganized, rude and unprofessional yet expects students to respect him. You will lose marks on assignments for things that dont even relate to the content of the assignment. Condescending. No lecture slides or bright space. You sit there as he chaotically rambles.
HORRIBLE professor, don't ever take him.. you'll regret it. I didn't really want to believe the reviews which is why I took him anyways, and dropped it within 2 weeks. He doesn't care about anybody and gives out marks like "0.75/15" Thats not even a real mark?!?!?! Dont take him!
I found Joseph Roman to be humorous, but I can understand how he rubs people the wrong way. Show up for class and participate in discussion, you'll do just fine. Roman puts a few trick questions in his multiple choice tests, people throw a tantrum. Wrote a research paper single night, got a decent grade.
Does not use brightspace at all, so don't skip. He is really funny and approachable. Tests are so easy, but assignments are graded harshly, I strongly suggest you go get feedback BEFORE you hand in an assignment because he will take the time to work with you. He is super picky about small details, don't miss a page number because it will sink you.
Incredibly rude and arrogant professor. He is unnecessarily mean and regularly insults/pokes fun at students, political groups, provinces, cities, etc. He thinks he is hilarious, but really it's distasteful and will impact your learning. He's also a nit picky and hard marker, will not make any accommodations, he once "denied" my medical note.
Cant really connect with, however you need to come to class to pass, .does not use Brightspace or send lectures, doesn't use powerpoints he just stands and reads from his laptop. His grading is super hard, and midterms are either hard or easy depends how much you studied your notes. Overall, okay class, chance of not passing is high.
We can all blame him for being a reprehensible human being. But the university is at fault here. How they continue to bring him back for more courses and more semesters is beyond me. It's a hsame they've not taken any action.
Professor Roman seems incredibly misunderstood by students. I'm shocked his reviews are so bad. He clearly states all the concepts which you need to know for tests and explains them well. He has extremely clear grading criteria for assignments which allows you to get a great mark on them. Also really helpful in office hours. Fantastic prof overall.
He is tough. Everything everyone says about his grading and personality is true. BUT he is incredibly smart and conveys the content extremely effectively. I struggle understanding/being interested in politics but I did well in this class. Show up, take SUPER detailed notes, and don't interrupt him and you'll be just fine. I'd take his class again
You will receive your grades on email with about 150 student numbers on it. You will have to search for your number to find the grade. Low quality teaching. Low end personality. No web site or slides or notes or even email. He won't answer.
Professor Roman is by far the worst prof I have ever had. If you have him on your schedule switch out of the class immediately, he does not care to teach, does not care if you pass or understand. His email answers are horrible. The amount of studying you will have to do for your final is phenomenal. He is straight disrespectful to his students.
Run before you have to take a class with Roman. The content of his classes is interesting, but his delivery and over all condescending attitude make you not want to learn from him. He shuts down students with questions and often ridicules them. His exams are not about concepts but about specific anecdotal content from his lectures. He is the worst.
He may not always say the nicest things... but his lectures are easy to follow and exams are very reflective the material covered in class!
very difficult to get the markno slide, so terrible experience
Joseph Roman comes off as quite abrasive and snarky but he's a good prof who is able to deliver his material well and is very understanding if you come to his office hours
Very lecture heavy, you need to attend or you won't pass. The textbook is good to use if you miss a lecture seeing as he doesn't post his stuff online, however the readings aren't really essential to your success. His lectures can be dry but they go fast so prepare your hands for the pain. Excessively hard marker.
Initially, you will think he is the worst prof. He seems really mean and inattentive, but he truly wants all his students to do well. Yes his tests are hard, and yes he marks the papers hard, but if you actually read his syllabus you will find everything you need to be successful. Show up to class, and go to his office hours if you need to.
I loved Prof Roman, the best teacher I have had so far. There was a lot of course material, so you need to go to class in order to do well, but his lectures are very captivating. Dedicated 3 classes to Indigenous rights which is super important for students to know what the atrocities committed against them were. Use your laptop to take notes
The tests are ridiculous -- I don't know many people that can fill a multiple choice test full of trick questions but Roman is one of them. Completely arbitrary grader, and general pain to deal with. Best avoid. Take in French if you have to, even if you don't speak a word of it you'll do better than with Roman.
I would recommend that students try to avoid this professor as best they can. He is very abrasive, and there is a lot of information to memorize. The prof does not make the information interesting. I ended up dropping this class before it was too late because I did not like this professor, and I knew that I would not do well in his course.
Terrible prof!!! Only poli sci class where 2/3 failed the midterm and everyone did poorly on assignments.
Hilarious prof. The realest one.
2 lectures in, the students started a petition to have him removed from the university.
I wouldn't recommend taking Joseph Roman for any courses, he is rude and unhelpful. Strongly suggest avoiding any of his classes.
Widely understood prof. Doesn't know the material. Consistently unprofessional, disrespectful and unreasonable grader. If you're interested in having your paper he docked entire marks for capitalization or commas, yeah take his course. Others stay away. University should seriously reconsider having him teach.
Widely misunderstood prof. No, you don't need to "avoid at all costs" unless you're easily offended, can't handle sarcasm or refuse to put in the work. If you come to class (no online use), seek help during office hours, follow his VERY specific requirements and standards (outlined in syllabus) you'll do better than just pass the course.
Everything on here about his personality is true. Unable to meet outside of office hours or class - if you work, forget it. Just email and wait 2 days for a short and rude reply. Not on brightspace so you need to go to class. Workload was average.
You have to go to every class, tough grader.
It's difficult to understand how he's been kept around. His knowledge is limited, his personality is overbearing and glowering. University ought to be embarrassed.
Honestly this guy is so extra. He wants everything to be exactly how he wants it. He lowers your grade by ridiculous amounts for turning in minutes late or for having margins 0.1 inches off. He has immense reading and the lectures are useless if you somehow manage to finish the readings and actually understand concepts. Also he posts nothing
One of few profs at UOttawa that has real-life experience. Very hard grader but fair. He tells you exactly what you want he wants in the course syllabus. If you don't go to class you will fail.
Avoid this prof if you can. He gives super severe grades and does not tell you why you have done so poorly. If you ask him to explain why you got such a poor grade, he will ignore your individual email, and tell everyone in the class to ask again AFTER the term has ended, making it incredibly hard to succeed on the final if it has a similar format.
Professor Roman is misunderstood. His lectures are very structured and goes through different concepts in depth to ensure understanding. He has a lot of real-life experience and a dry sense of humor which makes lectures entertaining. Essays are extremely strictly graded so follow the syllabus closely. Exams are easy - m/c and can use cheat sheets
Probably the worst professor I've encountered at the university. He's an extremely tough grader. Miss a lecture? Too bad he won't help u. Lastly, he's extremely rude! He even called me stupid at his office hours once. Avoid taking his classes at all costs! I saw his bad reviews and took the class anyways with some friends. We all failed the course.
Here is a fact. If you go to class and take the notes you will do very well. He doesn't give a lot of homework in terms of multiple assignments. His exams are fair but mostly based on his lectures. Go to class. Take notes You will do fine. If you skip classes you will not have slides posted to save you. This is a bit more of an old-school style.
Professor Roman is tough but fair. He will not give you any leeway for excuses. If you hand in a late assignment? You are finished. Go to class, take notes, and you will get a B+. I didn't study for his class but I attended every lecture and got a B+.
as a professor he is unorganized, limited in knowledge and in over his head - should not be teaching any material let alone a course requiring reflection. as a person he is rude and the class is poorly organized . Get ready to have marks docked for missing a comma, a capitalization, and adding too many spaces between words. UOttawa's best I guess
A lot of haters here, but to be honest, if you skip class you will probably fail. No need to buy the textbook his class is 100% lecture based. Go to every class, take good notes, and you will be just fine. Skip class and you are SOL. Also, don't write like complete garbage.
A very good lecturer, his lectures are engaging and informative. Unfortunately, that's about all the good things I can say. He seems bothered when students ask questions and doesn't give super specific instructions for the midterm. If you email him with a question he doesn't like, he will either not answer at all, or give you a 3-word reply
My grades have always been within an (A- to A+) range so I consider myself to be a bit of a try hard and I don't usually complain but WOW I have genuinely never encountered a more difficult and power crazy professor in my life. Passive aggressive, ignores emails, discourages students from trying, genuinely can't fit all my problems with him. AVOID
I found his lecture kind of foggy, honestly. It was hard to know what was important/not important because he used very colloquial language. My biggest complaint was how he treated students though. Calls them stupid for asking questions during officer house, always really passive aggressive when replying to emails and doesn't answer your question.
While I'm aware that some kids don't like him because of his attitude, I personally enjoyed his classes bc he explains concepts extremely well and his exams are VERY fair. He honestly saved some of our grades (maybe he became softer with the transition to online classes) complaints - no recorded lectures + very strict requirements for essays
Roman has a bad rep because he's condescending, irritable, dry and pretty unhelpful (if you're reading your reviews, consider changing your attitude! You might be respected more!). All this aside, he's genuinely an ok prof. If you can ignore his rudeness you'll learn a ton. GO TO CLASS! ppl who go to his office hrs tend to be favoured. So do that!
Roman is genuinely the worst prof I've ever had at this university. His feedback is entirely useless and he'll dock you letter grades for minor infractions. He also has a horrible attitude and won't answer questions he thinks are beneath him. Seriously, if you have any other option, take it. I ignored the reviews here and suffered for it.
WORST. POSSIBLE. PROF. Not only does he have a serious attitude, his feedback is useless. He docks grades off of the most useless points, and oh - if you submit an assignment in the wrong format, he'll just straight up give you a zero. Avoid taking his class ! He's rude and super disrespectful.
Professor Roman is misunderstood by most students. His assignments, midterm and final exam requirements were clear and if you were to answer with everything he says in class then you will do great. Be prepared to write though as notes are not given to you, just like in life nothing is given to you. He is a nice guy and he LOVES TO COMPLAIN.
Doesn't record lectures or allow you to enter the lecture after a few minutes despite a pandemic lockdown . Harsh grader, unclear assignment and exam expectations, and overall quite an unpleasant/rude person. Does not pass the vibe check: run, don't walk, as far away as possible from any of this dude's classes.
In an unprecedented online semester, Joseph Roman maintains his well documented narcissistic tendencies, refusing to provide any recorded lecture material, or even the lectures themselves. He is incredibly difficult to communicate with, retaining his right to ignore your questions and emails, as well as continuously ostracising students.
Huge explanations, few slide points. Goes off track and is terrible at explaining. You would think as a professor he knows how to explain matters but instead he goes on tangents and cannot explain anything. His answer 90% of the time is 'it depends' and you cannot get a straightforward explanation to save your life. Hate this guy, don't take him!
I took one class in the first year and It was fine, this class I am taking in my second year with him is terrible. He does minimalist slides with huge and lengthy explanations that don't always tie back to his point. He doesn't post anything so must attend and it is very difficult to follow along with his lessons. Overall, condenscedning professor.
The key to passing his class is to show up to class. I am always amazed by how many lazy students can't be bothered to attend the lecture and then get upset when he doesn't post his slides. If you show up and take notes you will do just fine.
The most useless incompetent sorry excuse of a professor Ive encountered throughout my learning career. He Is not clear about anything and takes marks for the smallest things. Acts like hes qualified and talks down on politicians, but cant even teach a simple class. Do not recommend, you can teach a monkey to teach better than he does.
There are mixed reviews about Roman, but overall, he's a good professor. He knows the material and he teaches it effectively (with a few snide comments every so often). He doesn't post his lecture slides so you NEED to show up to class to pass. His tests are content heavy, but he's very specific with what he wants which he outlines in the syllabus.
Terrible arrogant & conceited. Treats students like they're stupid, huge superiority complex. 3 hours of him going off on a tangent with a 5 minute break. grades his students extremely harsh, difficult to contact outside of class and does not provide ppt or recordings. Threw a tantrum, yelled at his class bc he doesn't know how to use MS teams :)
Hands down the worst prof I've ever had. He holds class at specific times and does not post the slides or info after/before, with no regard for students with children/jobs/appointments. The lectures and grading is unclear and students had marks taken for random things. Don't take a class with him if you care about your mental health at all.
Poor feedback, no access to TA's, submission requirements/format was unecessarily complicated, no recorded lectures, hard marker, can be funny but usually isn't very pleseant, good lectures though.
My experience with Roman was not good. His lectures were all over the place and not very useful despite being the only way to get any information as he doesn't post his lectures. I understand his attempt to make sure we attend lectures, but the lack of flexibility is damaging to his students' learning. He's also a mean grader without much guidance
RUN from this prof unless you have no other choice. If you submit a minute late, zero on your exam. If you mess up margins, page numbering, or any other small formatting errors: that's -2% from your FINAL grade. He'll ask for questions but respond as if you were an idiot. His grading is harsh - prepared for your self esteem to be lowered after.
First off he has his own problems - no recording or slides. But if you actually go to his classes (in an in-person setting you just do it so why not in this online class?), and take notes, youll get at least A-. If you look at the rubric, all points are given to contents, which just requires you to show up to classes. Simple like that.
Guy makes simple things like assignment formatting and submission so complicated but has toddler style meltdowns over Microsoft Teams glitches. Honestly good luck if you decide to take this prof.
I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt but I agree with the other comments. By far the worst professor I had throughout university. His grading was unreasonable and ability to teach the course material was poor. He appears to pride himself on the fact that many students fail his course. Avoid this professor if you can.
This is by far the worst professor I've ever encountered; a total disgrace to Uottawa. Does not mark fairly. Drop his class if you have him. Huge set of marks for assignments are based on the format of the paper, which is ridiculous because are you grading the students knowledge on the material or the format? Horrendous professor to have.
Despite the awful reviews, I decided to give Roman a chance. Worst mistake. He doesn't post notes, lectures, nothing! I missed a class and emailed him with a doctor's note (I had surgery that day) for notes or help, and he complete ignored my email. He is an unfair grader. Super tough for no reason.
Genuinely the worst prof out of all 4 years at uOttawa I have ever experienced. Doesn't care about students at all nothing is posted, horrid grading. Egotistical and genuinely does not lecture the content. legitimate 0/10 these reviews are not an exaggeration.
My only real complaint is his "warning" that he grades down if you bring up a marking mistake by the TA. Requests to review shouldn't be a game of Russian roulette.
Mr. sir Roman is not it. I am a fourth year student with an 8 gpa and he recently gave me a 25% on a short essay that was fully complete. May be a fluke but mixed in with his lack of support for student (i.e. not recording or posting slides/lectures, not replying to emails) I would try to avoid if you are able to, its not worth the stress.
If you don't need to take his class, don't... Very hard grader, not caring for students at all. No recordings or slides/notes. Im a third year political science student and i have never seen such grades ever, but he clearly didn't care. I had to drop it before it was too late because it was impossible to catch up grades...
The absolute worst professor I have had by FAR. there is no way you are passing the class if you skip it. he has a T.A that grades our assignments but is not accessible to us? Is he cracked? Full of himself.
the worse prof i ever had in university. He is such a hard grader and he is so unreasonable. it almost feels like he likes to make his students suffer. his expectations are unrealistic. please do not take him if u want to pass .
He is extremely unfair and rude to his students. He gives no guidance and makes his student feel stupid when they ask questions. I never had a prof this bad. I dont understand how Uottawa still lets him teach.
I understand where the negative comments come from. Professor Roman is very direct and does not show respect towards his students. Best advice I could give to get a decent grade is to go to his office hours and ask very specific questions. Also, contact him on the paper for follow-ups.
Just straight up horrible. Puts zero effort into teaching and actually detests the institution he works at. Lectures are just him ranting vaguely about keywords and concepts while frequently going off on unrelated tangents. Zero supporting material and has extremely unclear expectations when it comes to assessments. Avoid at all cost!
he does not care about you, his test criteria are vague. he is rude and abrasive. Roman can be described as an b word.
Worst prof I've had so far. He is very arrogant, rude and disrespectful towards students. He doesn't post any lectures, readings or anything so if you miss a class you're screwed. Worst part is he cares so much about stupid little formatting errors which is where you lose most of your marks. definitely would not recommend him to anyone else...
This guy is awful. Fails everyone on the midterm for following the instructions, and tells us he wanted us to put more even though he told us to simply define terms. He also hates the institution and is incredibly rude to his students. Also dont even try to ask him to look at your paper to re grade, cause he will just drop the grade. Terrible.
Cons: not replying to emails, only posts lecture recordings for a week, strict formatting rules, rambles alot in lecture Pros: tested material only from his lectures, never readings so just take detailed notes from lecture and detailed responses for tests, expectations are straight forward just follow them, esp FOLLOW FORMATTING RULES - study smart
Professor Roman is definitely the worst I've ever encountered at uOttawa. He is extremely rude to all of his students. If questions are asked during class that he doesn't like (all of them) he simply cuts the student off and tells them to ask during office hours, which he cancels frequently.
Roman's exams are completely unreasonable. They are based on lecture material, which is totally fine, but unless you can recite his exact words in detail, you won't do well. Tests were open book, used as an excuse to grade tougher. Questions out of 3 asked for 10 points, not 3 and were added up with 0.2/.3/.4 decimals. Format deductions strict.
Professor Roman is honestly a pretty good prof. I was worried at the beginning of the semester because of all the bad reviews but he gives good lectures, gives you a decent amount of readings, and answers emails in a timely manner. The people who don't like him seem to not like doing basic work and doing the bare minimum like any other course.
I have read the reviews and done my due diligence. I attended every class, took notes and reviewed them, something uncharacteristic of me. And I still received an incomplete. He is rude and can not hold even a short conversation. Expects you to read his mind. You ask him for help and he simply gives you sarcastic answers. Should not be a professor.
one word. "lol".
I really enjoyed having professor Roman has a prof. I was also a little nervous to have him this past semester as I read all the negative reviews. However, he is funny in class and he challenges you to do better. Definitely picky about formate for exams, but just follow the syllabus and you're golden.
His grading is VERY specific and if you cannot give him exactly what he wants you will not get the mark. He also has a very arrogant personality which some people may enjoy but it does make him seem very unapproachable. If you plan on taking this course, read the syllabus many times. Good luck.
The content itself isnt terribly difficult, but his grading is. Way too much emphasize on format and not nearly enough on content knowledge. Flat out disrespectful to students, will make you feel stupid if you ask a question.
HORRIBLE, I have never had such a bad professor in my life. Only reason I did not leave the class was because of the credit needed for my program. Exams are graded awfully if you do not write what he says word for word you will fail, he is a menace to society. If you love yourself do not take him.
Worst professor I've ever had. Incredibly rude and demeaning to students when they ask him questions. Expects you to write down exactly what he says in the exam, although he speaks incredibly fast and does not post recorded lectures. Clearly does not enjoy teaching as he makes it his life mission to make students as miserable as he clearly is.
This professor is a menace. He will actively try to make your life harder and he does not care enough about his students to want to see them succeed. Be prepared to basically write down everything he says WORD for WORD because thats the only way you will get a decent grade. If you care about your mental health please do not take him.
Literally the worst experience I've had in a professor. I went to one in-person class and he lost all my respect and I never went back. Since he is the only one teaching this course I had to literally plan around him. Since this class is mandatory to POL majors, I literally switched to a minor.
Very picky on grading, if you don't write word per word what he wants automatic fail. avoid him if you can. was rude to a couple of students during the term.
He was impossible to please. His lectures were so bland and I feel like I learned absolutely nothing. Don't expect any helpful feedback on your essays, it's just him and his TA's roasting the crap out of you. Avoid this guy at all costs.
His test are awful, not forgiving and has a giant list of key words you need to hit which make near impossible to get a 100 on a test. A definition question is actually a long answer question and a short answer question is actually a essay. He is such a horror story that those stories are the ones that make demons have nightmares.
he really sucks. legit just a bad person who lets his overinflated ego regarding politics get in the way of any actual productive teaching. he got mad at someone in lecture today for asking when we were going to receive our grades back. it was such a simple question with a simple response but instead he decided to flame them in lecture. what pos
Prof Roman is bad, avoid if possible. If you're stuck with him, be a fly on the wall. Don't ask questions, do not email him, and absolutely under no circumstance ask him to review your grade! In all honesty, he is a knowledgeable prof, just purposely difficult with students. As for exams, study letter per letter his lectures, and you won't fail.
Please please please never take him. Syllabus for him is around 20 pages, 4 of which is how you must format a document. Literally, terrible. He makes life remarkably hard for students and deducts large amounts of marks not for wrong answers but for title of documents uploaded... lost 20 percent for my document not ending in the right abbreviation
Do not take this class. Can not express how much I regret doing this. In all of my post secondary studies this is the absolute worst course I’ve taken with a prof. It is extremely discouraging to not pass an exam not because of your intellect but because “ your margins aren’t right”.He enjoys making students miserable.
I understand the hate. It took me a couple classes to realize why he does what he does. He wants you to be ready for the reality of the work place. His format for tests and assignments is clear and easy to follow if using word and making a document before the midterm and exam. In order to do well on tests I recommend writing everything he says.
The worst prof I have had makes your life unnecessarily difficult
Avoid at all costs! Not only are Roman's lectures some of the least engaging, with the worst slides of any poli sci prof, he is also by far the worst marker. Roman only accepts a perfect regurgitation of his own words, any difference of opinion on a topic will be marked as wrong and nitpicked to all hell.
As long as you pay attention to his lectures, I don't see why you cannot succeed in this course. I found his exams to be lecture-heavy, but he gives you the proper information and hints at what could be on the exam. I received a bad grade on my midterm and he was more than willing to go over it with me and my grade was boosted significantly.
I never thought I would write a review here, but I genuinely don't want anyone else to experience what happened to me in this class. PLEASE AVOID THIS, PROFESSOR. I'm an A student who received D+ with this professor.
I'm writing this so you know anyone who rated him higher than a 2 is a liar. POL2101 was mandatory and no one teaches it except for this psycho so I had to take it. Advice for anyone in my situation is write his notes word for word and on the exam write down everything. Pay attention to the format guideline cause you will lose grades so quick
Roman isn't as bad as everyone says he is. Like yeah his exams aren't the easiest. But they were 5 short answer question take-home and we had 3 days to do it. I think people just don't like that you can't bullshit the course. You need to take notes and then use the textbook to fill in what you didn't get, you're fine. Assignments were fine too.
Avoid this prof at all cost. I am a straight A student who actually puts effort in his classes and I have never struggled this much. His grading criteria isn't clear, he will give you a bad mark without proper justification and is incredibly passive aggressive when answering questions in class. Its like he purposely doesn't want to see us succeed.
My GPA including 2 of Roman's classes hovers around 8.5. Without them I would be pushing 9. Mind numbing lectures with blank white slides of text, ridiculous grading requirements (10% off a paper if it has the wrong filename), harsh grading on short answer tests (Quote him verbatim from lectures or you lose marks!). Avoid Roman AT ALL COSTS.
He's just a straight up bad professor. His lectures are unhelpful and unclear with useless slides; your grade is dependent on two assignments he offers little to no instruction for (beyond one paragraph in the syllabus); and he is rude and arrogant to students who ask questions (he just repeats what he said without clarifying). Avoid, if possible.
Extremely tough grader, would not accept answers on a test if it was not a direct reiteration of his own words.
This professor will only make the little strength you have to finish your degree vanish. Do not take him especially if you are taking a 4000 course. His grading is unclear and hard (goal post keeps changing) and is rude to students. Does not create a learning environment at all.
Please do not be like me and give Professor Roman's shocking Rate My Prof Score the benefit of the doubt. He truly is as horrible as the reviews say. This was my second and last time taking one of his classes. He is just straight-up rude to students and a very tough marker. Dropping the class was the best feeling ever. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid!
Joseph Roman was born to make the lives of his students miserable. All he cares about is ensuring that his students know he has a PhD. Though he will answer emails promptly, he will not answer questions just belittle you. It would be easier to learn French and take the French version of his classes rather than putting up with him.
Trying my hardest to write this in a nice way, but the rage is simmering below the surface. TRUST. This man doesn't like teaching and doesn't like students. Do not take, not worth the headache. I know A students who received Ds in his course. Wait for another prof to take this course if its a requirement. Otherwise, steer clear!
Roman has proven again he is the notorious the worst teacher in the whole department of political science in uOttawa. He has expectional abilities to make sure your life is hard as possible in his class than any regular 3 hours class taken in your whole university life.He dispcline student like what high school teacher, don't take his class
Worst professor I have ever had. His evaluation criteria are strict and unreasonable.
Gives almost no guidance on tests & the final exam outside of "read the syllabus". Tests tend to focus on menial topics (like the definition of a concept we spent 1 slide on), and you never know which topic is going to be on the test so you have to study for everything and hope for the best. I feel like I haven't learned anything on public policy.
lectures are confusing and consist of a lot of rambling. Hard tests, crazy hard exam. Good topics for final exam though. Would avoid
speaks at a mile a minute and is insulting when you ask a question.
This prof is rude to students, is very negative, requires strict essay formatting instead of grading your whole work on the essay, and is intimidating the way he talks to student in a condescending way. Horrible professor and I would purposely avoid any class he's teaching in the future.
Won't answer any questions just mocks people when they ask anything. don't take this guy if you can avoid him
Terrible, avoid
Honestly the most over-hated professor I've ever seen at uOttawa. Sure, he can be pretty arrogant at times, especially when answering questions, but the lectures were pretty good at explaining the material as long as you listened to what he was saying. Tests all reflected what was taught in class. Could be far worse.
His attitude is very condescending: if you try asking genuine questions which he deems stupid, he will brush you off. Graded by VERY few things (multiple choice) and a lot of it is on content he mentions offhandedly for two seconds, which is so unnecessary and frustrating. Attend all classes, take notes of everything and review everything to pass.
Professor is not kind to students. Has unusually strict guidelines for essays. You will get docked 10% if you submit in a pdf and not a .docx. Need to take notes word for word when he is speaking in class. You get a page of notes during tests which is necessary to pass.
Joseph Roman is an interesting professor who can be a hard A. Take the time to show up to lectures, take an interest and participate. I can see how many first year students don't like his style, but if you complete his assignments to the letter as outlined in the syllabus (which is very detailed) you'll get a good grade.
I dislike this prof as he gives off narcissistic vibes. In class I recall him saying, "I actually hate everyone, I hate my life... wait actually I change my mind, I love only myself." How is this supposed to make students feel, especially when trying to learn from a professor they thought enjoyed teaching and appreciated the students. AVOID HIM !!
I personally struggled in this class, as he refused to guide me with my late assignment which was due a few hours (3-4) after the due date. He knew I endured the passing of multiple family members within 2 months. He had no empathy and refused to help me with alternatives. I would not recommend him to anyone, as he is egoistic and inconsiderate
Ok, I understand the bad reviews. But I personally really enjoyed his lectures. 2 multiple choice quizzes which I found reflected the lectures. His grading criteria are clear just very precise, I lost points for margins. However, I found his teaching to be quite good, he's blunt and a bit egotistical at times (he's smart and he knows it).
dropped his class twice. I would rather hang than take him again. I'm so serious
Lectures can be confusing with a lot of rambling. Tests and exams are quite challenging. Though topics for the final are interesting, this class is best avoided. Unstuckstudy AI was a lifesaver for study prep.
Joseph does not enjoy teaching or what he teaches. Explicitly told our class to not study Political Science because you wont make money. I think he is just miserable. Can lose a lot of your mark just for small formatting mistakes. If you do not want to listen to him stroke his ego, stay away!!
He is an impossible grader. Extremely hard marker. He is bad with lectures and should be avoided at all costs. if you get him as a professor and you care about your grades, RUN! he is NOT your friend. worst prof imaginable. very difficult.
Honestly, not as bad as I thought he would be given the reviews. Only two multiple-choice tests, a final essay, and an in-person exam so I unfortunately can't comment much on how much of a hard grader he is. The tests were easy assuming you actually listen to everything he says. Do not think you can get away with the slides alone; you cannot.
AVOID...massive red flag
Easily the worst prof Ive had in 3 years so far. Avoid if you care about your grade.
Part 1. Many reviews look bad, but he's not a terrible prof. There's a presentation, and two essays (5-7 pgs). Final was two questions, 5-6 pages each for a total of 10-12 pages. We had two weeks to do it though. You can only use class sources for each assignement. Participation worth 10%. It's s seminar, so obvisouly be prepared to read.
Part 2. Again, he's not bad, but I wouldn't suggest that students take his classes. Toughest aspect of his courses is grading. The only time I've ever failed an assignment is with this prof. Every assigment is stressful. If you do take a class with him, don't be put down by the grades he gives, a C to C+ with Roman can be an A with another prof.
Two words: do not
Don't take this class if you can't read Roman's mind; think you understand the assignment based on the guidelines? You'll be surprised when you're graded by a far more intricate rubric with expectations that were not communicated at all. The essay's non-communicated intricate expectations were impossible to meet. - However, the quizzes were fine
Avoid at all costs
If you want to be the best, you have to learn from the best. Roman is an unforgiving genius. You can pass his classes if you are serious about your future. If not, take other classes you can coast through. Follow his rules, go to his office hours, read your books and digest them. He isn't your friend, he is a respected professor with a doctorate.
From an unbiased view: does not care about your success, calls questions stupid, lectures slide are very empty and refuses to repeat himself while he speaks quickly (all of which will be on the exam), and provides no review or heads-up on what you will be tested on. Also, his TAs were doctoral students who were ruthless markers.
Lecture slides have barely anything on them and he talks super fast and refuses to repeat himself, and everything he says you will be tested on. Doesnt give you a heads up of what the exam will consist of, doesnt like when students ask him questions (calls you stupid) and doesnt record lectures. His TAs were doctoral students and ruthless markers.
Uhhh hes literally rude
He literally said he wouldn't do trick questions but did he also uses textbooks but they don't do nothing im genuinely repulsed by how disrespectful and rude he was over a question i asked like its your job to help me wym i make your life harder
his lectures are key to passing this class. I didnt read the textbook but drilled my brain with his style of talking/things mentioned during lectures. Write it all down and then study from that. He is definitely rude and degrading so be prepared. He told us he didnt like trick questions but the exam had so many, it dropped my mark
I disregarded the reviews because I know myself and the effort i put into. BAD IDEA. dropped the class immediately after getting my essay grade. I always had A+ in my previous classes and I am known to be a good writer. They are incredibly tough to satisfy. RUN.
terrible prof, avoid
Honestly a bad teacher who hates his students and does not care or have empathy for them, but an easy class overall if its from a teacher that doesn't hate their job. Would not take him or recommend em to anyone, unless your trying to get a low mark or fail.
He told the class they did not know what it was like to work and pay for their own lives, but then he picked out some men and excluded them as exceptions because they were hardworking and made minimum wage at their jobs.
His class average tends to do poorly (>50) because attending his classes takes the life out of you. His attitude is horrible and draining, his lecturing is unorganized, and he jumps between topics quickly, expecting you to remember the important aspects of his tangents. He does not care for this job or students.
Worst professor I've ever seen
worst prof at the school and is genuinely a bad human being
he's rude and disrespectful to his students. hard to tell what's supposed to be course content and what he's just rambling about.
Paper is graded by secret criteria, next to nothing on his slides compared to what he says in class and EVERYTHING he mentions is fair game for the exam. Best tip is to record the lectures with captions and watch back later as he hates repeating himself, knocks people for asking questions half the time and talks too fast to write everything down.
Had him last semester too and the exam for a class in the same year is expected to be up to 25 questions longer. Quizzes are open book. Nothing is off limits for the exam, but if you take extensive notes during the lectures and dedicate hours to memorizing then you can get through it. Great at speaking, but not worth the stress and condescension.
i think he projects his misery onto his students because he believes they're naive about the real world but really its because he can't stand to be the only miserable pessimistic person in the room.
he doesn't leave any lecture notes, and usually grades very strictly, so much as uploading a file in pdf rather than docx will lose you points, if you miss a day that's it, you won't be able to access notes.
He has put me into a constant state of depression he's truly a miserable man not a shred of kindness in his soul
Course was online, all assignments and test online, FINAL in-person. Does lecture on MicroSoft Teams, not even recorded and yaps and is disrespectful and smug. During final, he was swearing and dressed like a frat bro. With all due respect, respect yourself and avoid this professor.
i never wore seatbelt while driving to class because i wanted to die before making it to his class
Roman has this condescending attribute to him. He carries himself like he's a 25 year old pothead even though he's a professor at an esteemed post-secondary institution. The class itself wasn't as hard as some of these reviews imply that it is
The worst professor i have ever had at university. Joseph truly does not care about any of his students and does not help them to succeed. His lectures primarily consisted of him being extremely rude towards the students and has no problem telling us that will we never make it out of university. Stay away from his classes
Every time he speaks, I feel my soul trying to crawl out of my body to escape the sheer hostility radiating from his presence. It's less of a class more of a psychological endurance test.
Chaotic teaching style, but I don't hate it. He incorporates many relevant topics into the lecture, and engages the class with questions. His lecture notes are lacking, essentially highlights of the textbook in which he goes into more detail vocally. A bit hard to digest all the info over 3 hours so coming in prepared with reading is your best bet.
If you value your CGPA and sanity, do yourself a favour—wait for another prof. Unless academic masochism is your thing, then hey, dive in! Gave a final packed with trick questions designed to trip up even the most prepared students. Zero explanation for the final paper (given in the first week), and he seems to hate teaching. PHD = deity? IDTS
Disliked this professor. Confusing multiple-choice questions and vague essay instructions. Refused to clarify essay in class, forcing students to wait days for email responses. Harsh marker. AVOID AT ALL COSTS (unless you absolutely have to have him as a teacher for a mandatory class) >:(
Professor Roman is by far the worst proffesor I have had so far. Very lecture heavy and the slides are useless. Talks very fast. His class requires 2 textbooks which aren't cheap and little to no instructions on assignments. Please do yourself a favour and avoid his class.
Okay guys. I had Roman for 3 classes throughout my time at UOttawa so I consider myself a bit of an expert on him lol. It's actually not that difficult to pass his class. He just wants you to regurgitate exactly what he says in class, so don't get create or interpretive with the notes, repeat EXACTLY what he says on the tests and you'll be fine!
The lectures were very interesting but it felt like he did not care about his students learning at all and seemed rather oppositional at all times.
How in the world is this guy still teaching? To associate him with teaching is an insult to the noble profession itself, not just an insult rather a stain that only darkens as time passes. I beg the university to put him on leave, give him time to reflect
sometimes i go to church before his classes so i can pray
sometimes I wonder what I did wrong in my life to get stuck with him as the only prof teaching pap1301
No clue how he is a prof. Talks like a disrespectful smug, doesn't like questions, and has almost zero instructions posted. Didn't even go over our midterm results because "his computer glitched or something." Like come on man, this is your job. He is not taking it seriously, and won't take your learning or grades seriously either. Avoid!
This course felt like punishment for sins I don't remember committing.
I have never been closer to fully dropping out of university than I was while taking 2 classes with Roman. Save yourself from the inevitable deterioration of your mental health and take the class with another prof!
I hope Roman is able to seek a vacation to restore his mental health to that of a normal non-arrogant egoistical, perhaps kind human being--- lately he has been the opposite of that
One of the worst experiences at uni. negative reviews are 100% true. He is condescending, rude, arrogant, and not helpful at all. final exam was heavy on multiple readings and the questions were not reflective of easily outlined concepts in them. Lecture slides have minimal info, and he rambles so get ready to take notes of everything. Avoid him
For charity's sake, I won't reiterate the negative comments. Advice: careful not to unmute yourself (he'll get mad), write down EVERYTHING, do the extra readings (there were a bunch of questions on them on the final), don't ask questions. Maybe bring a crucifix to the final and attempt an exorcism. The essay is harder to do well on than the exams.
Gave my gf a panic attack. Rather live in saharan desert for a year than be in his class
He made my MS worse.
Don't do it. Online course but in person final for all his classes
there's a stick shoved so far up his you know what that he's past the point of saving. you can save yourselves tho. you've been warned.
Out of my entire 3 years of Uni I have never once had a professor be so rude and uncaring towards students. Like pulling teeth to get him to answer emails and IF he dose his response is "see the syllabus". 30% of midterm was questions about the fine print in syllabus. Was told I didn't use APA in my essay when i absolutely did. Despicable man. RUN
do not take his class. he is the worst professor i have had so far. he never helps his students for anything. the grades for our essay were insane. i've heard of so many people who got flagged just for writing a good essay. this man is evil.
Worst professor ever. Arrogant; blabbing about slides + 2 expensive TBs. Tricky final with no practice Qs. Hasn't given back grade for essay (due over a month ago). Was stunned at ammount of grammatical/spelling errors in final; even forgot to add spaces b/w Qs, so the start of the next Q was stuck to the one above. Very unrewarding course.
He's not good by any means but he's not as bad as most say. Definitely condescending and for the love of God do not ask a question without reading the syllabus first. 99% of the time, he's gonna tell you to go read it instead of actually answering. Midterm and final were pretty simple and straightforward though.
very, very tough class. he's quite a tough grader and you NEED to do the readings, the final exam includes a large portion of questions related to the reading. he's overall a very miserable human being. would not take again. was also shocked how he looked because my class was online, the only time i saw him was in in the exam hall for the final
Not as bad as rmp says he is. If you do everything he says to do (taking notes on the entire textbook and in the lectures, then actually studying), you'll be fine. The class was big and online so if you don't say anything he won't pick on you. For the final essay, he just wants to see that you can use academic sources and argue/support a claim.
