This guy is hard! Computer Assignment 1 is tough and it only gets worse from there. His help is almost non-existent and you better learn to cheat for the test. With a 25% drop rate going for him, you better think long and hard before taking this one!
Very difficult teacher. The type of professor who knows so much in his area that he expects students to be at his level. He teaches way too fast for a statistics class. I felt lost too often. Exams covered too much material. I was very disappointed.
Very organized, provides printed notes so you can focus on learning the material he presents in class, you know what is expected of you from the first day of class-no surprises, and very good at presenting difficult material
It's a hard class, regardless of who teaches it. He does a good job at presenting the information and helping you to understand it. He is too harsh and picky when it comes to grading homework. Expect to be treated like a 7th grader working on a story problem.
just take someone else
"Covers" a lot of material, but doesn't "teach" it. Goes way to fast for most students to keep up. Handwritting on overheads is also bad and hard to read
From what I have heard he is one of the better professors to take for DS 265. And I have to agree. I took it in the spring so he moved fast, but he had to so that he could cover everything. Don't expect to get out early, he keeps you the whole time. The note packets he makes you print out are very useful and easy to study.
Makes you work hard but if you do the homework it is easy.Very clear on concepts, fundamentals and makes this difficult subject quite manageable.
Take Woodland instead of him or else you will be taking the course again. He is way to harsh when it comes to grading the test and the computer project. Don't get me wrong, it's a very very hard course but he makes it even harder.
He knows his material, but does not "teach" it. He is a very hard grader (No Curve). Very unhelpful in office hours. Get to know the tutor very well. Tests are long and hard. No pracite tests so you don't know what to expect!
Difficult course no matter who teaches it. He moves quickly through the material. Arrive on time and sit toward the front of class so you have a good view of overhead slides. Keep up with material, impossible to master material once you fall behind.
Very poor instructor; discovered Woodland requires two less chapters to be learned by final. No curve, altered grading scale instead. Very diffecult tester and grader. Not a good communicator.
Very hard. He knows the material, but can't teach it. Tests are very hard and cover a lot of material. Must type homework, which took longer than doing it. Half the class dropped after 1st test. No curve. Hard grader. Take someone else if possible, or plan on attending supplemental instruction regularly. I don't think anyone could get an A.
Class was fairly easy if you keep up and ask questions. His prepared notes really help summarize everything. Keep up and do the homework and an A is in the bag. Again, not so much the prof, but KEEP UP!
Hard class, but if you come to every class and make notes you should be able to easily pass the class. Nice guy, but is too much in love with stats. Sometimes goes a little fast, so ask a lot of questions.
This teacher is impossible. As if the class isn't hard enough, he is very anal when it comes to grading. He marked my paper off 20% for using a paper clip instead of a staple! His tests are hard, he does not teach well. Don't ask questions, he won't answer them. No reviews, hard grader, 80 pages of notes for each chapter. GO TO SI SESSIONS!
Joe explains the material very well. I had Woodland the previous semester and I bombed. She does not have the ability to explain the material as clearly as Joe does. He is a tough grader on the projects but more than fair with grading the exams. His exam questions are very similar to the ones that are gone over in class. Woodland throws trick Qstns
Flies through material. Knows so much stats he forgot what it is like to not know any. Tests take hours and cover huge amounts of material. Isn't willing to help and doesn't care if you "get it" or not. All "A" student until Scazzero. Take someone else. I can't even write fast enough to keep up with his overheads. Can we say tenure???
He kinda smiles like the grinch when you are wrong about an something in class, but hes very helpful in his office hours. do homework study the slides and take your time on the tests. and you can pass the dreaded stats class he teaches
Nice guy, but very anal, grades the homework and takes off for stupid things, goes way too fast to get all the notes down, dismissive when you try to get clarity, tests very hard and tricky. I only did well in this class because I worked extremely hard. Interesting stuff, but ouch.
Dr. Scazzero is very enthusiastic about statistics. Although very tough in terms of expectations, he really knows how to teach a difficult subject. I worked hard for my B+, but I learned more in this class than many others. The concepts taught in his class also helped in future courses, not direct application but in concepts. I highly recommend.
BEST STATS TEACHER TO TAKE!!!! Hammound is good but Scazzero is better he breaks down stats for me and it was so easy to learn, but stats is still a hard subject not an easy A, i still got a c plus even with Scazzero, I had a tutor from the holman center and i went to his office hours, anal on the comp projects though PLEASE TAKE STATS WITH HIM!!!!
AMAZING Professor. I just went to class, copied the notes, and did all the MANDATORY homework and by the time the exams came up they were easy with a little studying because he taught everything so well! HE is the best teacher ever and really cares about every student understanding the information. Just listen to his detailed instructions!
He was GREAT! For such an extremely difficult subject, he really worked hard to try to make sure you understood each concept along the way. You can tell he has taught this course a LOT. Very well-prepared and clear about what was expected of you. I highly recommend Prof. Scazzero. He has a corny sense of humor, but you can see he really enjoys this
Definitely the best stats teacher to take. Exam questions come directly from the slides and homework. Show up, pay attention, and do the work in order to get an A.
I had to re-take this class (I had Klungle my first time) & this professor is AMAZING! When you have questions after class, he is very helpful & nice about it (doesn't make you feel stupid). Print out the lecture notes for every chapter that he posts, they are a lifesaver & he uses the same notes to actually teach the class. Take him for DS265!
Tests can be rough if you dont keep up. But he provides you with TONS of examples and will be-labor seemingly easy points to make sure everyone gets it. Good prof overall, easy class if you took stats before.
Great professor, made the class entertaining. The class notes is the only thing I studied, as the book was overly confusing. Attendance is not mandatory, but for a class like statistics it's best to attend. Participation is expected so pay attention!! A+ professor though!!!!
Good professor, but with a few flaws. You get everything you need for tests from lectures and homework, so there are few surprises on tests. But you really need to study, as he presents a lot of material, and goes pretty fast. Always willing to go over things you don't understand. He is very anal about grading, and takes points off for everything.
The second time I had to take stats, I took it with Scazzero and I understood the material A LOT better! It is still a difficult class, but he explains the material very well and makes it easier to understand. Study the notes and do the assigned problems and you will do fine on the exams. His formula sheet is a lot easier to understand than others!
He is a good insructor , but he goes so fast on material unless someone stop him for Questions.Harsh at grading and not helpful at all when ask regards projects.
Stats is hard in general. If you don't have a strong foundation in math you will have to work HARD to stay on top of this material. Take this class at Washtenaw (wcc) it is easier. Scazzero is the best at emu but he still grades very hard and you probably won't get the grade you deserve because he takes points for stupid reasons.
I just finished this course Fall of 2012. Yes, he is a tough grader and it was irritating at times. He will mark you down for little things, but it will actually force you to turn in good work. As long as you put alot of effort into the homework, the tests are easy. Great Professor, very friendly, highly recommended!!
I failed it. Hard. Prof moves fast and grades hard. 50% pass this course. Minimal points (don't screw up); 4 computer projects and 3 tests. You need the book.
Excellent professor! Obviously, it's a tough class but he's very clear and sticks to his syllabus. No notes during test taking, but he gives you a formula sheet. I took it in the summer term so it was a lot of info crammed into a short time, but he made it easy. Be sure to do the homework problems even though they're not graded.
Very easy A- imo: 85-90 = A-, 80-85 = B+, 75-80 = B. He will take points off because you said "strong correlation" and not "strong positive correlation". Every freaking little error is a point off. With low points on HW and Tests they add up fast (my last hw got 14.5/18 = 80%). VERY ORGANIZED, do/understand HW and you don't need to study for tests
Dr Scazzero is your only hope for Statistics at EMU. He's a nice nerdy guy that really knows his stuff. He takes foreign concepts and breaks them down to addition/multiplication/division. Don't be afraid, just pay attention in class DO THE HOMEWORK!!! You only need the book for homework.
Horrible professor! I did all the hw, went to every class and took notes and still only managed 60s on the test. Worst professor I have had yet....
I do not really understand why so many people are giving him credit...He is very condescending and way too difficult. I understand that this class is important for the business environment but most of these kids are taking it because it is required, not because they are statistics majors. I went to every class and did all the hw and still did bad.
He is very strict when it comes to grading. One minimal math error costs about 9% off on a test. He gets mad when someone does not understand something and hates repeating himself. The class is made up of only 3 exams and 3 computer projects. The average grade on exams is about 60% because he purposely tries to trick you on exams.
Interesting class with about 1 to 2 hours homework per week + 3 tests. We started with over 20 students and now have about 12. If you go to each class and spend time on HW it's an easy B or more (80 = B+). Tough class to get an A because he takes points off for tiny errors. I got high 80s on tests and was the #2 or #3 best score in my class of 12.
Very tough professor. If you're looking for a challenging class, take this one with him.
Those people giving Dr. Scazzero a low score would have failed with any other professor. This is the hardest class at EMU. Scazzero goes over how to do the problems. He is your only hope of passing the first time: pay attention, ask questions, and do the homework (2x). He will call you out for texting in class, though. :-)
I got an A- (about an 87%). Interesting class where you will learn something new every single class. Aside from slashing points off for little things (which automatically drops you to the 80-90 range) it's a great class. Scored 107/120 on final (89%). I probably got everything right but a few minor and insignificant details!
No schedule for students at all, doesn't abide by the syllabus for exam parameters, and kills you on projects with vague instructions. Avoid if possible.
the key thing in this class IS attendance even though it is not required. He has a lot of great examples of the problems in class. You just have to be there to understand the concept and take down the notes! D+ the first time because I showed up 2/3 of the time, but second time i never missed class and I got a solid A!
Did a great job of explaining the difficult course material. Went through several examples in class, which was very helpful in preparing for exams. Doing the homework is a must!
I had him for DS265 and I highly recommend him. It is a difficult course but he is by far the best statistics teacher you will ever have. I am now in another stats class and I can honestly say he is the best. STUDY you can't just do nothing and do well. His notes will set you up for success. He will help you. He is fair and will curve. Best ever.
Great professor! Good sense of humor and is always willing to help students. Tries to make class engaging, so expect to be called on to participate every class. A bit of a picky grader. Grade consists of computer projs., 3, possibly cumulative exams, and participation pts. Review the notes and do the HW. Grades on curved scale (85 - 100 is an A).
Absolutely horrible. He was very dismissive if you ask to clarify. It was to the point where people stopped participating. Over half the class failed. Use someone if you are not a stats major, or just hire a tutor and say a prayer.
Horrific teacher. Flies flew material too fast. Even on exam week he goes other new material. Does not go over homework, 95% of class is made up of 3 impossible exams. no study guide or review. Hard grader. The class is set up for you to fail if you don't breath the right way.
While lecturing he will randomly call on people even though no one knows the answer to his questions because hes awful at explaining things. There's a handful of projects but they're only worth 10 pts each. when he grades he gives no partial credit. This class is hard no matter who you take but he seems to not care if you pass or fail.
Just take this as a warning that this is one of the most difficult courses in the COB and this teacher is the pickiest grader I ever had. Has trouble making material clear for students who are not familiar with stats (pretty much everyone). My advice is to look for another prof first or take advantage of the free tutor. Toughest class I've had yet.
3 tests and a handful of projects, which he walks through step by step. Projects are easy points. Harsh grader on tests, no chance to try and get points back. Once he passes them back, grades are final. Lecture can get boring at times but notes are all typed out for you with examples to fill in. Didn't use book unless you chose to do homework.
Taking DS265 with him now, and I wish wasn't. Hes terrible at teaching and goes way to quick through ALOT of material everyday. I am still managing a passing grade right now, but with 2 tests remaining, I am a bit worried. Take it with someone else if you can. Good luck if you decide to take him.
Bad. Bad. Bad. Take with another teacher AT ALL COSTS.
The most important question is are you a statistics major, or a business major? If you're here for statistics, take him because you will learn the material well. If you are here for business, stay away. He is an old school professor and a very difficult grader. Print off the notes, don't miss class and good luck, you'll need it.
Honestly made this class more difficult for me than it already is. Tough grader on exams and takes off a lot of points over simple matters. Can never miss class, miss class you will be behind by a lot.
Make no mistake, if something is wrong with your numbers it will hurt you in this class; he makes no room for minor inconsistencies. Homework is a recommendation, but he will not grade it. He gives enough of it to make sure you'll understand the material, but (often the case) he'll give the exam after lecturing new and extensive material.
This class is hard, but he is a good professor. As long as you put effort in, do the homework, and come to class, you'll pass. He curves the grading overall, (B- is 70%-75%). But it is a hard class. He gives lots of homework, but 85% of the grade is from the 3 tests.
Do not take him for DS265. Every other professor is a better option. This class is extremely hard, and he does not help you out at all. Extremely tough and picky grader. I could have passed if he wasn't so picky. Definitely try to get into Wozniak or Klungle's class instead. If you do get stuck with him, study your ass off, it is your only chance.
This is the most unnecessarily, difficult class I have taken. You can solve the problems with 3 buttons on a calculator, instead you have to do every problem by hand and he is a very harsh grader. I've never had to struggle for a grade but here we are. Good luck if you get stuck in this class.
This class was extremely difficult to jump into with taking 2 semesters off of stats. There was a short review, but then it was all into the big stuff. More than half the class failed the first exam, and instead of offering to help us, he said it was all our fault... would recommend finding someone else. I dropped the course and left the COB.
Took his DS265 class as a graduate student after his graduate class was canceled. It really wasn't that hard. He curves the class so an 80 is still an A for the undergrads not for the grad students though. Do the homework before class as best you can. Pay attention in class then do the homework again. What you don't understand, go talk to him
I dropped this class after the first exam. The class average was 48%, and he pretty much said that anyone who got under 40% should drop. He does not let you solve the problems with calculators and instead makes you do everything by hand. He expects everyone to know as much as him and does NOT take criticism or own up to mistakes.
Lectures are bland and I am only taking the class to get accepted into the COB yet he makes the class unreasonably hard and doesnt show sympathy on ANY tests. Wouldnt do it again
He marks you down for the smallest things, its honestly ridiculous.. He talks in a boring monotone voice throughout class. It is miserable so just DONT do it. Not trying to become a statistician I just want to pass and move toward my actual major.
I was in DS250 supposedly the easier class. I'm now in DS265 with a better professor and its much easier; go figure. He makes you buy this expensive book. Started the class with 35 students and ended up with 18 students. Didn't let us use electronics. He has terrible hand writing which makes it hard to take notes. All around a terrible person.
This professor seems to care about students but doesn't make any effort to. Doesn't care if students fail. He makes no assumptions on answers, make sure to show all work. The homework is much easier than the tests, use this as a cushion for your grade. Find someone to study with, put the time in, and you will do well.
Most ridiculous class I've ever taken at EMU. He tries to fit a full semester (and then some) in a summer class, goes on to several more chapters of material before the exam for the first few chapters is done, and doesn't really know how to explain the subject matter in an easy to understand way. Avoid at all costs.
Not very helpful.
He has a very different style of teaching but as long as you pay attention and study, he is great.
I have been in college for two an a half years now, and I can say with confidence Joseph Scazzero is the most difficult, unreasonable, uncooperative professor I have ever had. Just know, this class has an insanely high fail rate. He has no empathy. Our class average for an exam was 50%, he claimed we should be spending 9 hours out of class on HW.
You definitely have to work hard and be dedicated to learning the material. It was very difficult, but I passed. He makes you work for your grade and doesn't make it as easy as other classes which I now appreciate. Most people don't like him, but he was great when I took his course. Would take him again!
Statistics is a hard subject alone but having a professor that refuses to clarify the material makes it even harder. Mr. Scazzero has his priorities all wrong, hes more concerned that his class will cheat, rather than making sure his students know the material. Maybe they wouldnt be inclined to cheat if he could actually teach you something.
He doesnt do any review for the exams, doesnt go over any homework problems. He wont review your work and give you feedback, so good luck on getting full points. Lectures go til the last second. If you have questions on the material save them for tutoring because he is no help. For someone who gets paid to teach hes not very good at it.
If you have any questions, he either tells you to figure it out or repeats the same info you didnt understand the first time. He is very dated in his teaching methods and is a really tough grader. Your grade comes only from exams and projects. He doesnt curve at all and doesnt really give extra credit either. Stats is hard and he makes it worse.
Crystal clear lectures. Makes you work hard for the grade which is good because I learned the most from him. Gives about 5 projects which resemble exercises from the notes-could add more projects to boost your grade if asked. 2 exams,1 cumulative final. Attend the class, do the homework, go to his office hours and you shall pass. Good luck!
Not the best professor, insists that calculators are incorrect and that if the answer wasn't in the book and if you didn't answer from the book you are not correct. Can't/won't listen if you try to tell him he messed up on something and can't handle being told he was wrong. Not taking this prof ever again.
USELESS GUY!, cannot teach and is a bully, if you correct his mistakes, he takes more points off. AVOID HIM as he has no braincells left. He thinks he is the only right one and everyone else does not know anything. IDK why EASTERN still has him on payroll. He is also very toxic, he will not answer your questions instead makes fun of his students
When I say this man forgot how to teach when we went from in person to online, I mean nothing made sense. It was a super hard class, and for someone that usually gets all A's, it was upsetting that it was this hard for me. I feel like he could've done better at explaining the material, and we needed more walk-through practice questions.
Worst teacher at EMU. Will def make you work hard for your grade. Will deduct points for any minor mistake. Please I do not recommend taking him as a professor
He is a tough grader and his exams are HARD. In order to do well in his class, it is essential that you study not only the material covered in class but also the homework problems. I would recommend to study at least 9 hours. He does not answer questions during exams. no extra credits. However he is a nice guy and try to do his best.
I've never struggled with a professor so much. He takes off points for minor mistakes, is patronizing every time a student asks a question or gets an answer wrong, and has never curved our exams, even though the class average on the last was 50%. He lacks empathy for college students already struggling enough without his overcomplicated class.
Professor Scazzero is a nice guy but the class is really hard. There is quite a bit of homework that's only worth 10% of your grade. There are 3 exams that are the main portion of your grade. The exams are super hard and he's a tough grader, he'll knock points off for stupid things and there's never a curve even when the class average is a 45.
He is the worst teacher at emu. He doesn't give much material to practice, no reviews for test, he doesn't answer questions, and he is okay with the average on class test being 45% don't anything with this guy
I'd say give him a chance. He comes off gruff at first, but if you point out your specific concerns to him, he will try his best to accommodate. Lectures do teach you the material. He works through problems in class instead of reading a wall of text. I think he is overall a decent person and professor. Would take a class with him again.
Been at Emu since 2020 & this is the first class I have ever failed. With that, he goes into the class saying you should spend 12+ hours outside of class studying. like I don't have other classes that need my attention on top of a job. A horrible attitude. Makes the test hard to study for DO NOT take!
If this is a mandatory class for you, go to Washtenaw and do their course. The tests are 80% of the class with the last test being 30%. He makes you print out notes, which are upwards of 50 pages a chapter. Lectures are a 0 or 10 speed, and they can change really quick. He will flat out say that the class has a high retake ratio.Would not recommend
The test is worth your whole grade. If you fail one test you will fail the class, 80% of grade. Its all points or no points on each question. Multiple projects and hw assignments that dont seem worth it because they dont impact your grade. No phones or technology allowed in class as well. You have to print your own notes, which are atleast 20 pages.
Professor Scazzero was a great professor he truly cared about his students and wanted to help them. I was someone who struggled in that class but I was able to get help by going to office hours and asking questions. He is super accessible outside of class and will answer your questions. Put the work in this class and you will be fine.
Everything you need to know is in the textbook. As long as you do the homework problems the class is pretty easy. He curves the grades so an 85% overall or above is considered an A. I didn't need to study much out of class, but it all depends on you and how fast you pick up new concepts.
This class with Professor Scazzero is no easy feat. Exams make up 80% of the grade, and failing just one can mean failing the entire course. While the professor is strict, Unstuck study helped tremendously with test prep. Tough, but doable with dedication.
Nice guy and all, but his tests are so difficult. What you study he amplifies the material to try and trick you on the test.
If you're taking any other classes, don't. His class takes up all your time to pass.
There is so much information crammed into the semester that it is impossible to keep up and be proficient if you are taking any other time-consuming class. Every test is in person; there are no notes, just a formula sheet that's somewhat helpful. The tests are EXTREMELY HARD, and all short answers, basically.
People complain a lot about this class, but if you are at least decent with math and actually pay attention to what he says this class is not hard. Using the homework and the in class notes to study is the best way to get a good grade as well as understanding what the formulas are and what they correspond to. The projects/hw are free points too.
People who say “As long as you're decent at math this class is easy” are lying to you. This class consumes all your semester. He believes we all should be full-time statisticians. AVOID.
I consider myself average when it comes to school. I have a 3.5, but this is the hardest class I've ever taken. If you're unfortunate enough to get this class take it online it's ur only hope. Tests are 85% of ur grade which are not multiple choice. And he grades homework and projects harsher than tests Not military flexible
The first class I've ever failed. Tests are hard and open questions. He makes you print all of the lectures, no technology allowed. When I asked for help, he told me to drop the class, no way I'd pass. You have to study A LOT, not realistic. If you value your time and money skip this professor. More than half of the class failed. Take 265 it at WCC
