Bro. Spencer is amazing! His lectures blew my mind every single day in class. His class is not super difficult; just do the reading on time, come to class, two short papers (one on a book you have to read) and a midterm and final. Seriously not that bad. He's very kind and always willing to discuss something with you after class. Take from Spencer!

Professor Spencer is amazing. I wish I could take all my religion classes from him. He's eyeonpening and a true intellectual. He can be slightly eccentric at times, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I would reccommend him to anyone and everyone. Attending lectures and taking good notes are a must, but his style of teaching and testing is easy

Dr. Spencer is absolutely mind blowing. He makes you see the Book of Mormon in a way you never had before. He shares and tests you on his own ideas, so pay close attention in lectures. However, there are almost no assignments and he grades papers very easily. Completely different than seminary and I would not have wanted to learn from anyone else!

Brilliant teacher. loved his class. Not many grades so if you don't do your work you'll suffer but what I learned was far more important from my grade.

Dr. Spencer gave fantastic lectures consistently that challenged everything I thought I know about the Book of Mormon, and I loved every second of it. As long as you read the assigned chapters before coming to class, he teaches what will be on the (2) exams in class. There were two papers assigned, but they are short and specific. Take this class!

Brother Spencer is great. His class has taught me to be able to examine the Book of Mormon by using critical-thinking skills. He focuses solely on the text of the Book of Mormon and not what modern-day prophets say about it. Make sure you pay attention and take good notes during his classes because his exams are based on the ideas we cover in class

This is one of the best religion classes at the University. Expect to spend a lot of time reading if you take it, but you will certainly learn a lot. He will always respond to questions quickly and be ready to clarify anything if you ask.

I have mixed feelings about Dr. Spencer. He is one of those teachers that teaches his opinion about the Book of Mormon more than the doctrine. I definitely learned a lot from him and look at The Book of Mormon in a new way, but I didn't agree with some things he taught. Super nice! But I would take from someone else.

Awesome professor, it was refreshing to have a teacher who both knows the material backwards and forwards, and at the same time knows just as much about teaching. He teaches his take on the scriptures, and yet all the while makes it very clear that while you can take it or leave it, what he's trying to teach is a deeper approach to the text

He has unique knowledge on the Book of Mormon, some of it is very interesting. If you show up to class and listen easy A, a lot of points are based on reading and attendance. You get out of it what you put into it. If you want it to be interesting listen and think about what he is saying.

Brother Spencer has actually made a difference in my life! I have changed some of my habits and feel as though I am a better person because of it. His tests aren't too hard, he provides a great study guide. He grades your two papers somewhat rigorously. Come to class because he shares things in class that is on the test. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!

He made me look forward to his lectures! He knows SO MUCH and has so many unique insights about the Book of Mormon. He teaches in a way that you can decide for yourself rather than feeling as if he is pressuring you to agree with him. His tests were super easy if you go to class and pay attention. I'd take this class from him 10 times out of 10!!

For the first week or two he acted really weird. He tries to come at the Book of Mormon from such a weird angle he seems crazy, but after a little bit you'll get what he's saying. He expects a lot out of you but there's only so much you can expect in a religion class. Assigns a decent amount of homework and tests are few but not easy.

Insightful, if you don't learn anything new in the class, then you definitely were not paying attention

Professor Spencer approaches the Book of Mormon in a philosophical stance while bringing the spirit to every class. His teaching style can only be compared to that of John Green. The class is not hard, as long as you keep up with readings and assignments. I look forward to going to his class every day. Take Book of Mormon from him!

Professor Spencer offered so many new insights to the Book of Mormon that none of us freshmen would ever have considered. He taught about different perspectives and new views to the stories we thought we knew, and he bore testimony of the powerful truths in the book. I left every class feeling inspired and enlightened.

Doctor Spencer clearly knows a lot about the Book of Mormon. The way he talks about it is almost revolutionary. I mean, I feel like in thirty years we're all going to look at the Book of Mormon and talk about it the way he does. It's really incredible to understand the book how he does. The workload isn't too much, I would for sure recommend him.

He has an interesting take on the Book of Mormon that forces you to see it in a different light, but be sure to take copious notes. His exams are reasonable, open-note and open-book, as long as you know what you read; plus there's a short assignment every week plus a longer one every two weeks. He's also very accommodating and intelligent.

He had really interesting ideas and it was an overall easy class except for the midterm/final. Those tests are very difficult and timed on learning suite. It was really hard to study for the multiple choice part, but the essay portion is easy if you go to the TA review. Test is open BOM and note but make sure to know what happens in every chapter.

Dr. Spencer has good insights on the Book of Mormon. There aren't a lot of graded assignments so make sure you do all of them. Tests are kind of tricky, mostly because of the time limit, but if you study a good amount they're not that bad. I would recommend taking notes on your computer, it makes it easier and you can use them on the test.

Dr. Spencer has been the best religion professor I've had at BYU. He challenges the norms of LDS culture when it comes to the text of the Book of Mormon and invites students to discover simple truths for themselves. Don't be intimidated by the amount of homework and readings, its not bad at all! Really great guy who's willing to help if you ask.

This is the best professor I have had. His lectures are incredible--he is insightful and genuinely willing to learn about the Book of Mormon. He is not stuck in the traditional narrative of the Book of Mormon usually presented in Mormonism. His background studying philosophy brings a critical lens to the scriptures that is amazing. Take this class!

Best class I have yet taken at BYU. He's a doctor of Philosophy and so he addresses the text with great depth and great care. Very interesting lectures. Helps you ask questions and get at what the text is really saying. Getting an A wasn't too hard, just read a book over the semester and do some short essays.

Brother Spencer is a WONDERFUL professor. His lectures really get you thinking and his assignments are very straightforward. He's willing to help you in any way if you approach him after class or visit him during his office hours. Take good notes in his lectures and all of his exams will be an easy A! Always an enjoyable, enriching religion class!

His approach to the Book of Mormon is different . Focus is Abrahamic covanents, Isaiah,typology. Approach is very interesting. . Grading: Daily Questions on reading, tri-weekly page essays, 3 midterms & Final with 2 paragraph essays. His prompts ask for alot but only give you limited space to write. That would be his downside.

Very straightforward class, as long as you attend class and do daily questions it will be an easy A. The lectures are very unique and get you thinking about the Book of Mormon in a really interesting way. Make sure to go to review sessions where he lays out exactly what to say on essay questions piece by piece.

Dr. Spencer is so knowledgeable! Be prepared to take lots of notes during lecture time, or it will be difficult for you to get a good grade on tests. He has a very unique teaching style, so being open-minded every class will help you a ton (a.k.a you either get bored in your seat or get uplifted). Do your assignments well and get an EASY A!!!

Wow,Professor Spencer is truly amazing. He has a unique and fresh take on the Book of Mormon developed through diligent personal study and reading the book. He does have some interesting ideas, so still stick with what you know, but if you have an open mind you can learn so much and have your knowledge of this amazing book grow exponentially

Dr. Spencers class is really enjoyable. The tests are on LearningSuite, and they are really easy, especially if you attend a review session beforehand. The reading is required, and theres pretty much a weekly writing assignment in addition to questions about each reading. His class is definitely spiritually enriching.

Dr. Spencer is incredible. He has such a fresh view of the Book of Mormon and isn't afraid to talk about sensitive or confusing topics. Three tests: open book/neighbor/TA/professor, online, multiple choice (based on reading) and a short answer (based on lecture). Couple chapters to read a week. Some writing assignments that are pretty easy.

Dr Spencer is pretty much the best religion teacher on campus. He dives into the Book of Mormon's teachings from both a spiritual and an intellectual standpoint. Since he's a doctor of philosophy, you get a lot of really cool insights that can really enrich your understanding of the book. He's not afraid to challenge your views and call for change.

Dr Spencer is super passionate about the book of mormon and he know's it very well. If you are super set in your seminary traditions and views on the book of mormon, look for another teacher, Dr Spencer challenges many of these traditional viewpoints. I learned more from Dr Spencer in a semester than I did in all of my previous BoM study

Professor Spencer is doing incredible research and teaches from what is current in research pertaining to religion and the Book of Mormon. The PhD in Philosophy makes him so awesome. This guy knows his stuff. His classes are inspiring and he is intentional in nearly every word in his lectures. Would take for every class if possible.

Such an amazing, dedicated man. His insights and way of thinking really open you up to a new perspective of Mormonism and the Book of Mormon. Really engaging and funny. Assignments all increase learning and help you come to understand what resources or opinions are out there. This religion class changed my testimony and my life. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!

This is the second class I've taken from him. He's a brilliant man. His whole philosophy is to ask students to read the Book of Mormon with fresh eyes. He's not going to get mushy and spiritual, but if you want to REALLY know the scriptures, take his class. Two midterms and a final (open book), book report, and biweekly "expanding exercises."

The BEST religion professor for Book of Mormon 1 or 2. All the tests are on Learning Suite. Multiple choice and an essay portion. He gives you possible essay questions ahead of time that could show up. He will even pre check your answers before the test. A book report and a few random assignments as well as daily reading questions. Way easy.

I loved Prof. Spencer's class on the Book of Mormon. I felt like I gained invaluable insights about the text that I hadn't considered before. His class wasn't homework heavy, and tests/quizzes were rather easy. Some of the assignments he gave us were somewhat time-consuming, but if you followed all the grading criteria, he always gave out As.

Professor Spencer is one of the most amazing teachers I have ever had! In my REL A 275 class, he taught amazing lectures and really focused on teaching his students new things about the Book of Mormon. Very approachable and easy to talk to. Also, grades are easy as long as you put effort into it.

Brother Spencer is super great. He tells you exactly what you need in assignments to do well. All of the tests are on LearningSuite and open book/note. They're timed and sorta difficult because they're only on the reading, but not worth too much of your grade. Free Response portion of exams are based on lectures, which are super cool.

I have taken six religion courses at BYU and this was my favorite. Dr. Spencer does not entertain you with funny stories or jokes, like many great religion professors but nevertheless creates an engaging and SUPREMELY intellectually-stimulating class. He is passionate about the material and his daily and weekly assignments are the best of any class

LIFE-CHANGING. Take from Dr. Spencer if you want to have your mind blown every lecture and learn how to REALLY read and think about scripture. His perspectives on the BofM transformed my understanding of the gospel and my testimony, which had been struggling going into the class. Rare combination of an easy A and a remarkable professor/class.

Joseph was a really educated professor with lots of knowledge behind the Book of Mormon. He definitely had a different approach to it, in more of a philosophical way (his degree) than a spiritual. He was great and I learned a lot, but if you want spirituality then he is not your guy.

Relatively easy A. A few chapters of reading due each day of class, along with a few questions about that reading. Weekly responses to lengthier readings. Tests are online and fairly easy. Dr. Spencer is nice and he knows a ton about the BOM. He takes a more literary approach, but I've learned a lot about spiritual subjects as well.

He was very intelligent and his lectures were filled with different perspectives on the Book of Mormon. He also really cared about his students and liked to have discussions with us. That being said, it isn't a very spiritual class. Take this class if you like philosophy and structure of the Book of Mormon, not if you want to be spiritually fed.

This class was SO FUN. He has a profound understanding of the BOM due to years of research. His lectures are very engaging and made me think. He studied philosophy, so many of his presentations are influenced by those ideas. He is not afraid to address hard questions and is very open to student's questions, even when they seem to not agree. Amazing

Joseph Spencer knows his stuff. Every lecture opened my eyes to something new in the Book of Mormon I'd never considered before. I have such a deeper understanding and appreciation for this book after taking this class. 100% recommend. there are 3 online tests, each one having a multiple choice and essay part. Easy if you attend lectures and read!

Some feel like his class isn't "spiritual," but to me it definitely was; Dr. Spencer helped me discover hidden patterns and amazing principles in the Book of Mormon, the gospel, and life. The assignments require you to think deeply, but aren't overwhelming. The Learning Suite tests are fine if you attend every lecture and take thorough notes.

If you are taking this class to learn about the Book of Mormon then there is no better teacher. I would take this class every semester if I could. If you don't think you learn from this class its cause youre not listening. Even passively going to class will help you learn a ton.

Dr. Spencer is an amazing professor who changed the way I read the Book of Mormon. His lectures are direct, fast-paced, and enlightening. I gained an understanding for the sequence of the Book of Mormon without intentional memorization. His class increased my testimony and gave me an excitement for gospel study.

Take this class!! It is such a good class from an amazing professor. Professor Spencer has amazing lectures. There are weekly assignments due on Saturdays and a short reading assignment before each class. The tests are online (open-book, open note) and have review sessions that if you attend, you are guaranteed a high score.

Professor Spencer is so so amazing! He is SO knowledgeable and is great to work with one on one if you have personal or academic questions. The class definitely leans more scholarly which makes it more interesting than other BOM classes. If you want to read the BOM in a new way and are okay with coming up with your own application, he's the BEST!!

I love Dr. Spencer! He is seriously one of the most inspirational people ever. I felt the Spirit so strongly during every one of his lectures! He was also super accommodating to me during the semester. Super interesting and funny guy! He made me think about the Book of Mormon in a completely new way.

REALLY good lectures and lays out the Book of Mormon clearly but in a new light. There are weekly assignments, if you follow the instructions you'll get an A. Three exams: open book with 1-2 essay questions that you know beforehand. Definitely go to the exam reviews - they pretty much write the essay questions for you.

Genuinely one of the best religion classes I have ever taken. He majored in philosophy so hes got a lot of interesting takes, but has so well versed in scripture. Theres readings every class period and a small thing due every Saturday, but super easy. Not super spiritual, but intellectually enlarging enough that it strengthened my testimony. 11/10

Great lectures. Small reading assessments before each class. The only reading assignments were a few chapters from the Book of Mormon from each class. Every few weeks there is a larger assignment that takes an hour or so. Tests were open book and over the lecture material, but timed. Great class, great professor, and would take again!

So I took Pearl of Great Price from Professor Spencer when he taught it for the first time and it was amazing. He comes from a philosophy background and so there was a lot of abstract thinking and complex readings but he helped me understand the Pearl of Great Price in a whole new way. Not the most spiritual or easy religion class but really good.

This class gave me a new perspective on new insights on the Book of Mormon. He has daily quizzes due before class graded on participation and there are bigger weekly assignments that are easy and help you think differently. The tests are easy, you get the essay questions in advance, it's open scriptures/notes and there is a TA review10/10 take it

Good secular, analytical view. He focuses on literary devises to show new ways of understanding passages and addresses some difficult issues. Grade spread evenly over lots of assignments. One complaint: You MUST attend class b/c his understanding of a passage is what he wants you to write on tests. Take lots of notes and you'll do great!

Dr. Specer is incredibly intelligent, and he takes a new approach to the Book of Mormon. If you like to dissect scripture with a scholarly outlook, this is the class for you. Personally, I found the class hard to appreciate, so I would not take again, but I was not much of a challenge and I am glad I took it.

His class always blows my mind! If you want a new take on the gospel, he is the professor for you! His exams are a little tricky, but they are open note and book. There are many assignments, but they are pretty chill with the grading.

Take this class and you won't regret it! Readings + questions due before class, 15 minutes max. Midterms are half multiple choice, half short answer questions. He gives prompts beforehand + it's all open book. 1 assignment due each week also. Good mix of intellectual + spiritual stuff so you won't get bored ever! His lectures are amazing, loved it!

Dr. Spencer is by far my favorite religion professor. He greatly expanded my view of the Book of Mormon simply by making me *read* it as it wants to be read. He's a prominent BoM scholar himself, so many HW assignments involve reading academic articles, but I enjoyed that too. Tests are tough if you don't prepare or know what he wants you to write.

prof spencer is a very good teacher and knows his stuff. like he's a genius. the lectures are usually pretty interesting too but you don't really need to go to them for the exam since the exam multiple choice is just on scripture passages from that unit. pretty easy class just do all your assignments on time and actually read the readings

This man is really good at giving amazing lectures. He times them perfectly, and he really knows his stuff. Do not underestimate the tests, they are hardy, but he is willing to help you with what ever questions you have. He is a golden teacher:)

Every BYU student should take this class. I don't understand why people say this isn't a spiritual class. This class has kept me in the church and fostered a deep love of the Book of Mormon. Spirituality is not the absence of serious thought.

Dr. Spencer makes you have a crisis over how much you've missed in the Book of Mormon every single class. Absolutely brilliant lectures. Quite a quirky guy. Definitely take your reading seriously and take notes in class, but it's SO worth it to take from him.

I loved Professor Spencer. The only critique is that his tests were REALLY hard. I think he was amazing at lecturing. He was so fun to listen to because he is just so passionate about the Book Of Mormon. I wouldn't recommend though if you aren't fond of taking notes.

this is the second class I've taken from Dr. Spencer. He is absolutely brilliant & the most compelling lecturer. Since this was a 300 level class, there was a lot more expected of us compared to 275. Listening to Dr. Spencer is truly a privilege as he is one of the smartest, if not THE smartest, philosophers at BYU. It's not easy but it is worth it

Best religion professor I've ever taken. He's not only interested in teaching the material, but helping you find answers for yourself. He's done more for my testimony than any other teacher at BYU.

Professor Spencer is very informed and every class is full of ideas and concepts I'd never considered before. You can tell that he is passionate about the Book of Mormon and really knows his stuff.

I have nothing but good things to say about Professor Spencer -- he is accessible and friendly, his lectures are fascinating, and he knows the BOM better than anyone I know.

Dr spencer is hardcore. He's very much a philosopher/scholar of the BOM, so it's a different perspective than I've ever considered. You have to go to lecture, that's what exams (and really everything else) is based on. I always feel like my brain is 10x bigger when I walk out of this class. exams aren't that hard and he actually responds to emails

Professor Spencer is amazing. His BoM class is focused on the true interpretation of scripture passages rather than application and he approaches it from a more academic-focused viewpoint. It can get confusing if you miss class, as the lectures build off each other, but he's a well-versed and entertaining lecturer. Would highly recommend his class.

Great professor and an incredible lecturer. I've read the BoM a number of times but I learned completely new things in his class about the Book of Mormon that have changed my testimony completely. Professor Spencer is an amazingly intelligent man. His knowledge of the Book of Mormon is beyond anything I imagined I'd be learning at BYU. His is the first religion class I've taken that added actual value to my testimony and understanding, and his activities are varied and sensible, if slightly difficult.

His lectures build upon each other so attend every class because otherwise you will be confused. His tests are open note and scripture but are difficult if you struggle with little details. Professor Spencer is a really amazing teacher and the lectures are great; HOWEVER I regret taking this class. I do not come from a very LDS family nor have a served a mission so I found the tests to be very difficult because it focuses on tiny tiny details. I would only take this class if I have already taken a BOM class or have served a mission.

Holy. Cow. Words cannot express how much I this class has impacted me and my testimony. Dr. Spencer approached the scriptures in a more academic way, and I loved that! Lectures were sometimes really hard to follow, but as long as you take notes and go to class you should be good.

Professor Spencer's definitely quirky, but his lectures are outstanding. He takes a different approach than mainstream interpretations to the majority of the scriptures and will make you see the BOM completely differently. I've got a whole new desire to read the BOM after this class! The readings can pile up if you aren't careful, so plan ahead.

I walked into this class the first day unsure if I was going to learn anything, but after a week I was amazed at how much more there was to know about the Book of Mormon. Tests and quizzes are open note- so take them. Exams are tricky, but not impossible if you actually pay attention and take detailed notes. His lectures are amazing, and he truly is a spiritual giant. I walked out of that class with a significantly stronger testimony and 100% would take another one of his classes if I could.

Professor Spencer brings some really cool insights into reading scripture. I loved this class, but probably wouldn't have if I hadn't gone on a mission/read the BoM before. It would have just been a lot too fast for me. But, it could still be fine, idk. He challenges you to read more in-depth and it really strengthens your testimony!

Dr. Spencer's classes are based on one simple premise: what if we actually pay close attention to the text of the Book of Mormon? That may sound trite, but after 10 minutes in his class you will realize you have not been doing that at all. Yes, even you. Be prepared to have your mind blown in the best way.

I was hesitant about the class at the start, but once we really got into the Book of Mormon, every lecture completely blew my mind. I didn't think I'd learn much, but the way I read and understand the book has completely changed. Absolutely loved the class, and definitely will be taking more classes from him in the future!

Professor Spencer is the future of Book of Mormon studies. This is very, very good news. Of course, he is way too humble to ever accept a compliment that big. This class will literally change your life, but not in any superficial way. I mean it. Your incorrect assumptions will be challenged, and healthier paradigms will be presented.

Even if you really enjoy the Book of Mormon and expect to spend over 6 hours a week total on homework expect it to be very hard to get an A.

Definitely take this class! The assignments are pretty simple: 2 readings (a couple chapters in the BOM) and then a larger assignment due at the end of the week. The tests aren't too bad either, as long as you took notes during class (show up!). I haven't served a mission yet, but I still understood the material, and it was fascinating!

Very good professor if you want to see the Book of Mormon in a new light. He teaches scripture in a very intentional way that reflects the larger goals of individual authors and the Book of Mormon itself. His class can be challenging, especially with more complex concepts, but it is 100% worth it and will completely change the way you study.

Dr. Spencer is awesome and a great teacher. The class-to-class lectures flow but the cohesiveness overall is not the best. I still recommend this class regardless. Pre-class reading (4 chapters-ish) and 3 easy questions due before class. 50% of exam questions are difficult, use ctrl+f to search scriptures and you'll pass (open note, open scripture)

TAKE THIS CLASS! I loved every second of it and I wish I was majoring in something in the religion department just so my schedule could be full of his classes! Professor Spencer is an incredible teacher and I left every single lecture with my mind blown and with a new excitement to study the Book of Mormon. Doesn't feel like a Sunday school class.

I loved taking this class from Brother Spencer! There was reading before every class but it was never very much, and I felt like we used it to lead our discussions in the lecture. There were a few papers but nothing too crazy. I learned a lot and I thought that Brother Spencer was an excellent teacher!

(Closeted atheist here) Professor Spencer is super caring. He met with me multiple times in office hours and we walked through questions I had, and he let me make up points on the tests. However, I almost never was able to get a good score on the weekly assignments and seldom got feedback about what I did wrong. It was quite stressful at times.

The lectures were amazing, learned so much. The readings were normal, but the papers and tests were a bit difficult. Do not take a class from Prof. Spencer if you want an easy religion credit. If you want to learn about the Book of Mormon from a more scholarly perspective I would 100% recommend. He lectures without slides but uses a whiteboard.

Would definitely recommend taking univ from Prof. Spencer. There's some reading before each class but it's not too bad, plus it's very eye-opening. Great class, great guy, great lectures on Hugh Nibley

REL 336 is such a unique religion class. Most people would love it, I wasn't the hugest fan. Each class is discussion format and most of the time is spent with him asking us questions about what literary techniques we see. Your grade is all based on one final exam that is worth 30% of your grade. I haven't got it back, but the TA grades harshly

Professor Spencer's REL275 class is a challenging but rewarding experience. The lectures are engaging, and you'll gain a deep understanding of the Book of Mormon. Attending every class and using resources like unstuckstudy for study prep are key to succeeding in this course.

Prof Spencer is great. Seriously one of the smartest BoM professors out there. His lectures make you feel like you're reading the BoM for the first time, even after serving a mission. The class is actually kind of difficult, the grading criteria are not super clear. There are quite a few writing assignments, I only wish more feedback was given.

This was my favorite class this semester. Although he doesn't take attendance, it is totally worth it to go to every lecture because they are so interesting and help you see the Book of Mormon in ways you never have before. He always is willing to answer questions, both during class and afterwards as well as point you to more resources.

Dr. Spencer is a super awesome lecturer. He knows this subject backwards and forwards. He may require a little more effort outside of class than other professors who teach this class, but its still honestly not that much, and the insights he shares in class are totally worth it.

I loved Dr. Spencer's class. I felt like he really delved into scholarship and linguistic patterns. I was able to learn way more about the Book of Mormon than I ever had before. He did rely on TAs for all the grading, and the assignments take a minute to get the hang of. Otherwise, lectures were amazing. Highly recommend!

I loved Dr. Spencer's class. This class was about 2 Nephi and I learned a lot. However, I felt like his TAs always grading harshly with no feedback. Highly recommend Dr. Spencer's lectures though! You will learn a different way to delve into the scriptures, which is from the perspective of how the authors intended.
