very easy to understand and clear
Mr. Spielman was a very good teacher. If you did the homework he assigned, you should've done good because he made the tests and quizzes even easier that the homework. He was very clear and precise and a very good instructor. I would HIGHLY recommend him.
Mr. Spielman was a great teacher. If you did your homework, you should've done well in the class because his test and quizzes are on teh same level or easier than the homework problems. He was very clear and precise with what he wanted. I would HIGHLY recommend him!
Nice guy. Wants everyone to do well and does his best to make it happen. Go to class. I'm horrible at math and i opened my book probably 5 times and still got a B. Even though he is very boring I would recommend him.
He knows the material well and presents it in a reasonable fashion, though I have to ask for help often he is VERY helpful and willing to help when I ask him. If you keep up with the homework and pay attention in class then you will get a decent grade. He is a very nice teacher and will answer all of your questions.
Great teacher. Very helpful. Show up to class and take good notes, you'll get an A.
This was my worst math teacher. I am used to getting A's in math and I failed his class. He makes up his own formulas and he taught us things that were not in the book so the math lab couldnt help us.
The worst teacher. Everything he did on the board had nothing to do with the homework.
he is the worst math professor i ever had. i would not recommend him at all, you better find some other professor. he probablly teachs just because of the money. he doesnt care about students at all. he drops the lowest quiz and he makes a big deal about that, like that is something wow. but definitely dont even think about taking his class at all!
Mr. Spielman was a great teacher. As with all classes if you want a good grade you have to be willing to put in some effort. As long as you attend class and do the homework you will be fine, because his quizzes and tests are easier than the homework. He was always available to answer questions. I would recommend him to anyone ready to learn.
The best math teacher I've ever had. Very clear and easy to understand.
This teacher was a very strict when it came to grading and he took no pity on his students. i was miserable throughout the whole class and listening to his poor speaking abilities made my semester worse.
Probably the best overall teacher I've ever had. Just do the homework and the tests are eacy.
He is probably one of the worst teachers I ever had. It was a struggle for me to show up to class everyday. He was so boring. I love math and have loved every math class I have ever had, but I hated this one. Be prepared to take a lot of notes and memorize a bunch of formulas in this class.
Great teacher. Knows what he's doing and likes math, but he's a Cubs fan. Watch out!
Be prepared to take lots of notes and to memorize pointless formulas. He asks if we have questions and then tells us to see him after class... Then to top it all off, he starts teaching chapter 6 when we are supposed to be testing on chapter 5 the following class. He's not a very good teacher!
I think the last writer had a bad day. Spielman Rocks! He makes statistics fun and understandable and if you do the homework you should be fine. Great teacher!
i dont really like math but he subbed for my 108 class and i liked him.
Worst teacher I have EVER had. Would try to explain something, get lost in his own explanation, erase board and start over. Over half the class dropped by the end of the term. Try and ask for an explanation and get told does not have time and needs to move onto next topic.
If math doesn't come easy to you, stay away from his classes. He thinks that because it comes easy to him, it should to everyone. He really has limited teaching skills...he just reiterates what's in the book. I learned more off the text book's companion website than from him. Nice guy, but poor educator.
I've taken Mr. Spielman now for 2 classes and can't imagine learning as much from anyone else. Other people might not like him maybe just because its math. If you ask questions and show that you are trying, you should end up with a decent grade. His tests are very similar to the homework, so be sure to do that.
Awesome teacher!
Very entertaining guy and has a lot of passion for what he teaches. His tests and quizzes can be challenging so you will need to study but can definitely do well if you know your stuff. I found his class very interesting and he's a great guy. Go cubbies!
Great teacher. Wants everyone to learn and do well. Do the homework or you will be lost.
Great Teacher!
Calculus is difficult and thats not his fault. He can go fast at times, but overall a good teacher. Like others have said, the homework is most important. He uses questions just like those on quizzes and tests.
very intelligent person, but not very accomplished at teaching his knowledge to others.
pretty good teacher overall goes fast sometimes but will help if you ask
Had to drop due to not understanding, the examples he gives. He can't do or explain a problem without his paper he makes before class. Doesn't teach vhery clearly.
i haven't learned anything in this class, im being tutored plus going to the math lab and i am still struggling. he's ridiculous.
i haven't learned anything from this class...only from my friends tutoring me for hours on end....ridiculous! im good at math this class is not what i expected!!!!
Very easy class! He will go out of his way to help if you just ask. Tests and quizzes are extremely easy because they are just like the homework. Open notes on quizzes!
HORRIBLE TEACHER HE DIDNT TEACH ANYTHING HE JUST EXPECTED YOU TO KNOW WHAT YOU WERE DOING AND IF YOU ASKED A QUESTION HE WOULD JUST EXPLAIN THE SAME WAY HE JUST DID AND IT WOULDNT MAKE ANY SENSE.HE WOULD ALWAYS SMIRK CUZ HE THOUGHT HE WAS SOOOO MUCH SMARTER THAN US WHEN HE WOULD ASK A QUESTION AND NO ONE KNEW THE ANSWER AND IT WAS ANNOYING!!!
I think he's a great teacher. He takes his time going through the material and explains it as if he is learning it with you. His tests might seem tricky at first, but you're taking notes and doing the homework. Homework is big, but he does allow a notecard and open notes.
I think he's a great teacher. He takes his time going through the material and explains it as if he is learning it with you. His tests might seem tricky at first, but THEY'RE NOT if you're taking notes and doing the homework. Homework is big, but he does allow a notecard and open notes.
kind of snarky attitude. shoots down students for trying to answer questions in class. he gets nicer over the course of the semester.
Totally cool. Totally easy. Take his class!
such a bad teacher if that is what u call him i loved math& always straight a's in math that is until i took his class He is like a walking calculator does every thing n his head& 4a visual person like myself this is very hard2 c how a peoblem is done& his test he would go over some thing 1s & then it would be on the test & no1 would expect it2 b o
Loved his class! He's really a great guy and easy to understand.
Horrible horrible teacher, very unwilling to help, "if we couldstop asking questions id really like to move on, im on a tight schedule"-Spielman he flies through information, and i have not met one of my friends that passed his 115 class, do not take it with him, its worth waiting a semester if you have to.
I think the last writer had a bad day and maybe just doesn't know how college works! I took this class over the summer and I thought Joe was extremely helpful. He also made the class tons easier by using practice exams and open notes. I would definitely take any class he is teaching. Highly recommended!
so far he is a good teacher, he expectes you to try and wont just hand you an A but thats what i am paying for right? i like that he does practice tests.
Good guy, very helpful. He writes his own tests/quizzes, so the numbers can be a bit tough. Not very clear when lecturing.
Very smart guy. He is extremely helpful and will always make the extra effort to make you understand.
AWEFUL!!! He teaches something once, gives a few examples, and then expects you to know it. When you ask him to explain something, he is mean about it. Jumps down your throat and makes you feel really stupid. DONT take his class!! DONT do it!! So many student dropped, and even more passed only with a D.
Good teacher but he expects you to try. I spent a lot of time doing the homework to do well. I like that he makes the class feel real and college level.
I hate math but I loved taking his class.
His way of explaining the lessons was understandable for the most part. However after that, you're on your own. He'll help you only if he likes you. I ran into another student if his after the semester ended, and the both of us agreed that he has a horrible tendency to play "favorites." I would not recommend him for a future course.
GREAT TEACHER!Prof. Spielman lectures clearly. He gives a basic idea of what's going on,gives clear examples,& makes sure U understand before going on.He's very approachable & has Q/A time @ beg of class.HW gvn, nevr graded.Pract. test is EXACT same as real, but w/dif.#'s.He gives xtra credit & drops 2 of 12 quiz grades.Quizzes R open note.Xpct2 work!
Very good teacher! Gives homework, although not for a grade. Also, allows time for questions at the beginning of each class on homework questions or questions in general. He gives practice tests which are very similar to the actual tests!
Professor Spielman is a very good instructor. The material is tough and you have to study. I took this class during the summer so the pace was even faster than normal. Homework given but not graded although recommended. Practice tests are like actual test just changes some numbers. A lot of studying and learning is on your own quizzes are open note
My first ever math teacher that could explain things to me. Too bad I couldn't have had him in high school! I had him for Math115 over the summer. Quizes are open notes. And the class before every test(exam) he gives you a study guide which is EXACTLY like the test just different promblems. I would highly recommend him. Like any class, pay attentio
He was a great teacher! I had to be at 6 and had a class before his, but managed to stay awake because he was very interesting. He never collects homework and quizzes were open note. He tries his best to help you pass. If you need help, talk to him. Practice tests are EXACTLY like the test, so if you understand that, you'll do great.
I love attending his class although it is not mandatory. I could just sit there all day and stare at him.i really like it when nobody else attends class and I get some one on one time with him. Can you say extra credit!
The dude is awesome. He explains very clearly and has the patience of a champ. He will answer and an every question and makes very few mistakes while teaching which is a nice relief. open note quizes and identical practice tests make the class a breeze. He is seriously a grade saver
this dude kicks a$$. He makes everything so simple and will actually take the time to explain things until you understand them. Quizzes are open notes, not book. He gives you a practice test to study and the real test is the same as practice test except names and numbers change. Can't say enough good things about this guy.
This guy is really nice and crystal clear, and he makes the problems as easy as possible. A nice guy too. Cant recommend highly enough!
very helpful and easy just do the homework and practice test and you will pass he is FOR the students!
I can't say enough good things about this guy. He's easily the nicest teacher I've had in entire academic career. He really does care about the students, so he will work with you, no problem. And he explains the material very well. Tests and quizzes are over the easiest problems. Love this guy!
His personality is a little dry, but he's a nice guy and a great teacher. He walks through each problem and makes it easy to understand. He also gives out great test reviews that are very similar to the actual test.
I have purposely taken him for the last 3 semesters I've been at ICC. He's personality is a little dry but he REALLY knows math inside and out. No homework, and you can use your notes on all quizzes. Very thorough, very clear. As long as you try, he'll pass you, plain and simple.
Great teacher. He's super helpful and will answer any questions you have. Also is willing to go over anything you have trouble with during office hours. I highly recommend him!!
Poor teacher. I was refreshing my math skills after earning a B.S. with a 3.98/4.00 GPA and had to drop for risk of failing. Speaks and writes faster than you can comprehend material. Often skips/combines steps making it hard to follow. Very nit-picky with grading. Starts class early and continues past ending time with one tiny 3-4min break. Avoid!
I'm not great or terrible at math. This was really a general survey of math. If you're awful with problem solving you will struggle with this class bc its throughout. Set theory, geometry, counting methods, and probability. Open note quizzes & a huge cheat sheet for the final. He makes it almost impossible to fail and for that I'm forever grateful!
I thought his calculus class was awesome! The 3.98/4.0 student probably should take a class in "showing respect for others" because I thought he was always willing to help and he wants his students to do well. Very fair at grading also and he gives practice tests. I would take any class he teaches and I feel I am definitely ready for calculus 2!
He is the sweetest guy and the greatest teacher ever. He hands out notes so you just have to fill in the blanks. If you attend class everyday, homework is not needed and you will get an A. Best and easiest teacher I've ever had.
Open note quizzes and lets you have one 8.5x11 paper during final. Sweet guy and it's totally hot that he's so geeked out about math.
I had a great time in Mr. Spielman's class! He always was helpful and allowed plenty of time for questions. He made calculus easier to understand and learn. Highly recommended teacher!!
He's an overall great teachers. Notes can be used on quizzes. He gives out sample tests that are very similar to the test. As long as you pay attention and show up to class you're golden
He only gave 10 Quizzes which were all open note, there were 4 tests and they were closed note but the study guide he gives you to study is exactly like the test. There are no other graded assignments.
I am a very good student and I work my butt off to get good grades. I worked my butt off in this class and ended up with a C. I was very disappointed. He only gives tests and quizzes, so there are not many ways to improve your grade. He goes super fast through his lectures and leaves steps out so you get lost looking at your notes. Avoid!!
Awesome teacher!!! Can not thank him enough for all the help with learning a subject I have not done or had to use in so long. If you want to learn algebra, take Mr. Spielman!!!
Optional hw, I didn't even buy the textbook. Open-note quizzes, he gives notesoutlines with all info & problems you'll see on a quiz or test, so you'll do well if you follow along in class. He gives study guides for each test, that are literally identical to the test. Put time & work in, you will deff do well. I hate math and got an A. SOOO easy.
Open note quizzes, tests are harder and he's a picky grader but do the homework to prepare for it
He's an okay teacher. His exams are tough and if you suck at Math you'll definitely have to keep up with the homework instead of doing it last minute before a test is due.
I work really hard in my classes, I have a 3.5 GPA, well not anymore because I got an F in this class!! If you don't know math like its the back of your hand, do not take this class with him. He rushes through and doesn't explain things very well. I went to the math lab and he knew I worked my butt off and he still failed me!! I have NEVER failed
College Algebra is tough and Professor Spielman's class is no exception. However, the resources he provides are helpful and his expectations are fair. His quizzes are open notes and he allowed one computer-page of notes front and back on the exam. Be prepared to pay attention, take good notes, and do the assigned problems.
Professor Spielman was a great teacher and made himself very accessible outside of class. He was very willing to answer questions before every class/quiz/test. There were a good amount of quizzes but they were open-notes. Overall, he was a great teacher.
I worked my butt off and he knew that. I would e-mail him all the time and always went to the math lab. I went to every class. , wrote everything down that he put on the board, did all the homework that was for a grade not for a grade and I still didn't pass his class. There was about 32 people in our class and by final exam there was about 12
I really enjoy math. As a student to see that passion in an educator is amazing. I recommend attending all classes. However you must be able to do the work. Math is a structural subject. You must learn to build on solid knowledge. Bonus: his pre tests are extremely close to actual test.
Professor Spielman was one of the most enjoyable math instructors I've had. Coming from a guy who has struggled constantly with math courses, Mr. Spielman took the time to help me better understand concepts and answer questions. The practice exams are nearly identical to the real exams. Allows notes on quizzes. Extra Credit on Tests. Good luck
Great guy. Demands a good amount, but no more than we should demand from ourselves if we want to succeed at whatever we decide to do.
Don't bother taking him if you struggle with math. Most of the homework is ungraded so it is easy to get behind if you miss a few. The homework that is graded is online and never covers everything that gets covered in class so good luck trying to figure out if you need help in some areas.
He is so kind and understanding. He always is super helpful. He is also very good at understanding. Homework is optional, but i recommend it
Should be there for class just because it is math and to be able to learn it I had to see it as an example and solved out in front of me. This was my second time taking general ed statistics and I chose just to go with a different professor the second time around and prof spielman was a good choice for that, he made sure we understood the content
I would NOT recommend this professor. He talks the whole class time!! Very hard to understand because he is going so fast and he doesn't leave anytime in class for questions! There were quizzes over information we just barely learned 2 days after he sped through it and even with so many quizzes the bad ones still effected my grade in the end.
Mr. Spielman is an awesome teacher! He really cares about his students and wants the best for them. You will need to work but he is fair and wants to help. I feel like I'm ready for Calculus and will do well!!
A pretty solid professor. He goes a bit fast, which I prefer, but it may not be great for someone who takes a little longer to learn things. Does tons of examples in class and always allows for questions if you're confused. The course I took was very quiz heavy. I would take his class again though; I felt he explained everything really well.
Class was incredibly boring. but he taught exactly what you need to know. The tests are exactly what he prepares you for, and he reviews every test with the class. He is friendly and approachable, but lectures are dry.
I am not great at math, so that has a lot to do with how difficult I considered the class to be. Prof. Spielman is not a bad professor, he posts all of his lectures and notes for the tests online. You have to do a lot of reading and assignments, but it is managable.
Professor Spielman is a decent teacher, he has a melancholic tone but his point gets across. As long as you take good notes and do the practice exams you will do fine in this class. Quizzes are open note but tests aren't. The class is long to sit through but its a credit class so its worth it. Attendance is taken daily.
He gives a lot of homework assignments but if you understand them you will do good on the tests. The test are all multiple choice
I would take his class again! As long as you do the homework then you will get an A! His quizzes were open note and he gave us a practice exam at least a week before each real one! He is very good at explaining the math concepts.
He stressed me out and was not motivating
He gives a study guide for each exam and for the final. He allows extra credit on exams too! He wants everyone to succeed and gives very clear grading criteria! I loved him. He made me appreciate calculus.
DONT take this or any math class online. It doesn't matter if you cheat you need to know the material. In particular this professor did not have good lectures, but I am sure if I took it in person I would have learned more.
Mr. Spielman was an awesome professor. I learned so much taking his class. I've even considered becoming a math teacher. His passion for math is inspiring! Thank you for being a great teacher and caring for your students.
He is a good professor and provides what you need for success. It's a hard class if you're not great with math, but if you make sure you understand the specified textbook problems before exams, you should be okay. There's a LOT of homework to get through. The textbook is an absolute must. It's very time consuming, but that's just the nature of it.
The class was challenging, but the professor broke down topics well. Attending lectures and using resources like the free textbook and Unstuck AI helped me stay on top of the material. Overall, a solid math course.
Homework was 65 questions for entire section up to exam, open for 3-4 weeks. Not cool lol
I thought I was good at math until this class. He didn't actually teach the subject, he just wrote through the 2937 pages of notes and did the problems as if you were automatically supposed to get it. I passed Calculus and somehow barely passed this class. Maybe it's just me? Didn't like it. Online class yet mandatory in person exams.
