He is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. His teaching style is straight forward, just make sure you do your homework, you'll be good. He always allows time for examples and questions, even though he has a lot to cover. Really good
Good teacher, very clear explanations, good organized board, helpfool.
Instructor is not clear in explanations of homework. Gives pop quizzes weekly. No credit for H.W. Gives exams and study guides that don't correlate with each other. Gives examples not pertaining to the subject. Not a good choice f you really want to understand Intermediate Algebra. Take Sellers or Phillips.
This man comes into class upbeat and cheerful everyday.
He is a good lecturer even though he makes tons of mistakes when he writes on the board. However, Steever fails when it comes to tests/quizzes. He assigned take home quizzes with impossible problems- LITERALLY. They couldn't be solved because he made typing errors. And then he just laughed it off in class. Also, his tests are EXTREMELY HARD.
Don't take him!
He always comes to class cheeful.... hes weird but kind of funny. always explains everything and goes over it until the class gets it. his tst are easy. he gives u all the info you need. take him.!!!
He is always smiling and a very happy teacher. He is never in a bad mood and he explains everything very clearly.
kinda goofy, but very knowlegable. if you don't do the work on a regular basis you wont pass this class.
A GREAT teacher, super helpful and very approchable. Assigns meaningful work and has a wonderful knack for explaining things very clearly (wich is rare with math teachers) I would definately reccommend him to anyone looking to take int. algebra. I only wish he tought bore classes!
Run!!!!
Prepare your self to work very hard. He will explain any questions you have, lots of work.Overall good teacher and good class if you have lots of time.
For Calculus I, he knows the material and his lectures are generally very good. However, the avg. for the first exam was an F and he didn't care. He prides himself on the problems he gives being too hard for the campus tutors to help. Unless you're a math genius, DON'T ATTEMPT THIS COURSE!!! WITH HIM!
he sucks. he didnt prepare me for calculus, he doesn't know to explain, she basically doesnt care. All he talks is about himself in comparation with prof. Klounova. Guess what prof. Steever! She is better than you!!!
where to begin? first test class avg. was an F. He gave quizzes w/o set dates. wasted several lectures on mistakes. chooses obscure textbook problems for tests. if you have time for another job, there you go. have fun.
I didn't listen to when they said RUN and i payed the price..He taught a section that wasn't in the book..did online certifications that weren't on the test.
He is really good when it comes to teaching. He break it down to every steps so you can understand and teach a way to where you will understand if you are having trouble. loves to joke around with sudents.
He doesn't explain the material well. He has a tendency to discuss topics that have nothing to do with math & it absorbs a lot of time. He doesn't prepare you for the final at all.Your homework is worth only 5 pts. He picks 5 questions and if they are wrong, you get them wrong, you get 0 pts. Don't take him!!
Great teacher. At first he was intimidating, but after I adjusted he was a clear, concise, and understandable. Take his class, be prepared to work, and ask for help. He is very approachable if you ask him questions. Great choice for a teacher.
i dont like how we dont have homework or classwork and our grade is based upon quizes and tests.
went for jus one day,he didnt explain well, and he jus mad one too many corny jokes,my teammates stayed in this class and said that i was lucky that i dropped it,dont take it
OK!! he laughs at his own jokes because honestly they are no where near funny, his teaching is just unclear to me and he tends to have this a.hole attitude if you continue to ask the same question, he doesnt stick well to his syllabus but i will wish you luck if you take him but i hope you DONT TAKE HIM!
He's funny.
Upside: work-at-your-own-pace class, ipods/mp3s are allowed, textbook/hw all online. Downside: if you try to contact him, he either waits til the last minute to reply or doesn't respond at all, not helpful if you're stuck on a problem, acts like students should already know the material but that is why we are there in the first place, to learn.
This class was a joke. Its "computer assisted" not try to learn it all on your own. He never taught the class anything. He just sat there and text the whole time. Probably the worst class i've ever taken in my life. Only 7 people showed up for the Final on time. What does that tell you? Kinda hard to learn something from a teacher that doesnt teach
wasnt the most helpful teacher and went through material too quickly. it was more like review than actual teaching during summer course. Didnt offer extra credit, and wasnt very helpful during one on one time.I wouldnt take his class if you need things brokendown.Hes really smart, but cant explain things to people who get lost.I just tought myself.
Professor Steever is an incredibly smart instructor. He expects a lot from his students, but delivers a terrific math course. SHOW UP, DO THE HOMEWORK, STUDY FOR THE EXAMS and you will do fine. Test are hard, but he is very approachable and helpful. He has a great sense of humor. Very fair. WORK HARD, and he will give you the benefit of doubt.
I had him for Math 34, I thought he was a great professor. Do your homework, and stufy for tests, and I don't see why you could not pass. Obviously the people that don't like him are LAZY! Good job Mr. Steever!!
I did not pass his class. however my not passing had nothing to do with him. I took another teacher this semester and Mr. Steever hasbeen there helping me through the class even though I am no longer his student. He is truly determined to see all students excel. HE TRULY IS A GREAT TEACHER.
The class was was relatively easy I would of pass with a higher grade if he didnt count the homework as part of my grade. Overall he is a fun teacher,I like how before we progress to a next section he gives his history behind the section before he taught us the section.
First time in 3o units I got less that a bad grade. Makes you go 30(ave) problems a night for homework and then only grades 5, not very helpful. Doesn't give you practice test w/solutions.
Strongly recommend this instructor :) I like the way he shows the relationship between different formulas which help me a lot to remember all of them. Gonna take his MATH 335 next semester for sure :)
He's all over the place with his teaching. He will do a problem then get it wrong or change the problem half way through. He yells a lot which might be good if you fall asleep. I found it annoying. He falls behind on lessons cause he gets off topic easy. He holds you after class most of the time. If you don't understand math, take someone else
Steever is amazing. I hated math before this course and now I adore it! He's funny and passionate. He brings a level of energy to class that makes you excited and interested. He joked that he must be hated cause he's a math teacher, but we all loved him! STRONGLY recommend taking Math 34 with him
Do not take math 100 in the summer. Over 100 problems of homework assigned every night. Only 4 are graded. Comprehensive midterm and final given. 1 exam score dropped and does not offer extra credit. If you dont enjoy math. Summer is not the time you want to take this course. Extremely fast paced. Im upset the counselor put this in my ed plan.
Summer Math 100. he writes probs on the board so quickly. and skips steps because he can do them in his head. so when i go back to my notes i dont know how to figure this stuff out. numerous students tell him to please slow down everyday. he doesnt get the hint. He grades extremely hard
Steever is a great teacher. The problem that I noticed with a lot of my class mates is that they dont do homework and then think they should pass. If you have a study group he is more than will to attend and help out but a lot of people flake the study group and complain later..I passed so yea...DO your homework!
Does not complete lecture and expect students to learn how to do everything on there own. Most confusing lectures I have seen. Grades homework. Has a dark sense of humor. Avoid this professor for pre-calculus because he is still new with lecturing this course. Not enough time to complete exams.
His grading system was whack. 100 problems randomly selects four if you miss those four then you fail the class. He does not explain things and does not do test reviews. AVOID HIS CLASS!!!
Steever is the best. He cares about his students. He is really funny and we spend most of class laughing. I'm a girl who has never been good at math but Steever makes it fun and challenging. He's a bit self-degrading, he has no idea how smart and funny he is. Take him!!
I'm not sure if the material was difficult or that he was not a clear instructor, very challenging. If it wasn't for his sense of humor, I would have dropped the class.
I took this class during the summer. worst decision ever! this teacher assigned soo much hw. A lot of students ended up dropping the class. He has a potty mouth, gets easily distracted & blurts out random things. he was helpful if you came to his office hours, but if u had a question in class he wasnt so helpful.
He was one of the toughest teacher in SCC i had because he is tough on homework and the tests are little challenging however overall he was a good teacher because he explains in a way you understand but manytimes you have to ask questions if you do not get it
AVOID HIM! He is very unclear on the subjects and assigns a lot of hw. He only grades 3 of them. He is rude and expects you to be a mathematician. He is really hard and rushes through everything. If he doesn't go over it in class then he expects you to learn it yourself. He is always off topic as well. NEVER TAKE HIM because is extremely HARD!
avoid him
let him be your last option
It is a difficult class, but you will know your stuff if you pass. He lectures clearly and has many interesting tales for the math-minded among us. I really enjoyed his class because I really enjoy math.
Steever is an overall pretty good prof., buh if you are BAD at math, like i am; then this prof (class) probably isnt for you! i do admit, he is very organized in his teaching lectures, buh it felt like he almost expected us to know most of the stuff. i was there to LEARN it, obviously! home work was simple, tests were pretty hard.
Steever is a really good professor. He's funny and he really wants his students to succeed. If you work hard you'll do well in his class. If you visit him in his office hours he's incredibly helpful and will take his time helping you with any problems you need.
Steever is the ideal math professor. He truly knows his stuff and does a great job at clarifications. Like others that have posted, he is a very challenging professor and you're going to have to work extra hard to pass his class. Despite that, it's a gurantee that you'll learn a lot in his class. Not recommended if math isn't your best subject.
Steever is a funny dude and really knows his stuff. Long lectures with lots of notes, lots of cursing (mostly by the professor), and tough tests. Homework is not graded, but essential for success. Generally, passing the final will earn you a passing grade in the class. Still not an easy class or professor, but definitely worth taking.
I took the Hybrid class and he expected 16 hours to be spent on math homework a week, with ridiculous amounts of homework. Class lectures were spent reviewing what we basically taught yourselves online on the homework the week before and no reviews for tests. He was a funny sarcastic guy but had no mercy.
Professor Steever is not an ordinary math professor. He does not explain math in easy terms and he expects too much of his students. His exams are challenging and they make you cry. He doesn't collect HW, but gives quizzes based off of the HW. Overall, I found his class to be quite overwhelming. On a positive note, he is very funny!
He is really sarcastic and funny, but if you don't make use of tutoring center and study groups with other classmates it is really hard to PASS his class. His lectures are hard to follow and he has an overwhelming amount of homework due every single class.
He's honestly one of the worst math professors. He expects so much of his students and will make them feel stupid if hes reviewing something they forgot from an earlier class. His lectures are fast and hard to follow and he leaves bunches of homework. His tests will make you cry.
Exams are extremely tough! I got an A in math 120 and 335 but I'm barely getting a passing grade on his exams even after studying 6 hrs a day. This is the first time that I have ever had to drop a class. But whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Getting a C in his class would be an A with a different teacher.
This was BY FAR the worst class I have ever taken. His tests are extremely hard and half the time he hasnt even timed himself, so he just ASSUMES its easy. The tests are always way too long so that you are rushing just to get to the last few pages and have no time to check your work. He also curses a lot and can be condescending.
Sac City prides themselves in one of the hardest math programs in the Sacramento Area, Steever is proof of this. I usually excel in math but not this time. His lectures are fast and unclear, his homework is insane, his tests are basically untimed puzzles that have missing pieces. I only recommend this teacher if you are not taking other classes.
Great Teacher, Helps you learn your algebra roots all over again, and he's sarcastic and funny professor and his teaching wakes you up. Great Math Teacher, one of favorite math professors here at city.
In my opinion he makes math fun because of his personality. He can come off as condescending. 5 problems on each chapter is graded out of like 30 problems, which makes it tough to get a good grade on HW. The test are similar to the reviews he provides. Overall he is a good teacher, he makes sure you understand. This class is not an easy A.
Just don't. Horrible class, basically teaching yourself
Joseph Steever was a tough professor, grades very hard, but he was also an amazing teacher in Math. He is funny and crude, but also gives very clear lectures! I never have been good at Math but he was the first professor that lectured until it made sense to the whole class. Great Professor but be ready to work hard.
Professor Steever was the best math teacher I ever have had. He broke down basic concepts so it was easy to understand and each week we would build on those skills. Before this class fractions were a nightmare for me, after I had them mastered. He also offered on many occasions to go over a test a didn't do well on, or would offer a time to review
*ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NO CALCULATORS ON TESTS* I personally struggle in math, if that's you don't take him. First test we had i didn't finish it b/c i was too busy doing side work for long division. (calculator would've been nice) bright side, does give partial credit on tests. School ended dec 15 its now dec 30th & final grade still NOT posted-_-
I have severe math anxiety. Math and I have a long turbulent history, but taking math with Professor Steever helped so much. It made all the difference for me. He's very patient, gives tons of clear examples, and even spends the first 10 minutes of class going over homework problems that we didnt understand. I LOVE his teaching style! Take him!
Worst professor I've ever taken. I've never had a teacher swear as much as he does. Seriously, it's like he TRIES to add as many swear words into his lecture as he can. He's just a bad teacher. He jumps all over the place and gives no examples even though it's supposed to be calculus for business. Ignores emails and doesn't show up to office hours.
Fast lectures and a lot of homework. Exams are super hard. AVOID HIM.
Avoid this professor! Even though this class starts at 7am he literally marks you ABSENT if you're even a few seconds late to class! Lectures are unclear, he isn't in his office sometimes during his office hours. I asked for help with a problem once and he snorted and said 'this is trivial'. VERY tough grader. would not take again.
Proffessor Steever is unconvetional when it comes to teaching ,but very effective. He's like Samuel L Jackson trying to be a comedian while teaching math.
He has easy shortcuts to solve problems and he reviews the homework sections very well beforehand. He tries really hard to be funny and cusses alot. its like a kid trying to fit in. Misses class alot especially on fridays!! And marks you absent even if youre a second late to class late 1/2 absent. But its not annotated on the syllabus.
Never take him for any math class. Hes not very passionate about teaching. Doesnt care about students. He uses profanity in every sentence. Cant belive they let a man like him teach. Smart, but stuck up and not very nice. Never take him. Doesnt even help. Flakey.
He does not have capability of a professor. He is really rude. He uses a lot of bad words (F words) in the class. I wonder how this kind of person could be a professor of an academic organizations. My request for Sacramento City College is to dismiss such a rude professor from an academic organization.
I disliked that homework is online and self taught 1 chapter of homework with 5 to 6 sections each sections has between 20 to 50 problems each that is due every week.
You may not use the book in class, but you'll be teaching yourself with it at home because of the lack of teaching he does. In class, he calls himself a comedic, but gets sidetracked easily from teaching. He doesn't go over online homework or review for tests well at all. He expects you to know every math formula before he starts his class.
One of the most obnoxious people I've ever met. He thinks he's funny since he swears all throughout his lecture and randomly yells at the top of his lungs. Constantly makes unfunny jokes at student's expense, which makes for an extremely uncomfortable atmosphere. I took one class with this guy and immediately went home and dropped it. Avoid him.
One of the most hilarious professors Ive had. He makes fun of things to lighten to stress of the complexity of math. He takes time to answer questions and stops to ask student questions when we get stumped. Informative lectures and he provides office hours which are extremely helpful. Hes tough but if you apply yourself you can learn a lot!
He is a brilliant professor but he is a terrible instructor. His lectures are very messy and hard to follow. He is very unorganized, a tough grader, and his exams are extremely hard. He is very condescending and obnoxious. He thinks he's hilarious by being obnoxious. Just try to avoid him as an instructor.
Class is difficult. Be prepared to read the textbook because he mainly teaches by doing example problems. I felt like I might as well stayed home and read the book instead of attending class because I didn't understand anything.
He goes really fast in lecture and doesnt explain alot of the scratch work. Dudes too good at math for his own good. He also picks the hardest problems possible for quizes and tests and hw. This makes it hard to learn the basic concepts of calc. Its like trying to teach how a basuc motor works to someone with a F1 car. The core concepts get lost
Hes only there for about half the classes and will not take any homework late even if you miss class. Goes off on tangents a lot and cares about being funny more than how well hes teaching. Would never recommend.
I dont even know where to start. Just dont take this professor. His own life gets in the way of his teaching. Doesn't give homework and tests back for months. Will talk about stuff you dont need to know to confuse you. You have to read the confusing book to start to understand what the f he is talking about. I dont think he should be teaching.
In the beginning he was very focused and helpful but other obligations of his got in the way. He had 3 different subs teaching us the same thing but different ways which made things confusing. Near the end he said he didn't care if we showed up because the material was on us to learn. He's funny but his test can be confusing. DO HW get outside help
simply, DO NOT TAKE HIM. This professor dose not explain or teach! He will literally just go though the textbook for problems on the sections and expects you to know the answer. He dosen't provide Hw, test prep, or anything to help you out becuase "he's too lazy to grade." There are only 4 exams & just 10 questions so study your life out or u fail
Never been good at math, usually can pull off a C but this prof made it so hard. HW every class due the following class, load was bearable but hard to follow during class making it hard to do HW. Didn't grade HW or put it in then stopped assigning HW bc he didn't want to grade. No grade in canvas til mid-Oct. Only 2 Exams in Canvas when I dropped
DO NOT TAKE HIM unless you are a natural math talent! I have never dropped a class before, but I had to drop his. Math is hard for me but I usually work hard and get an A. He gave us no guidance, homework was optional and was never graded anyway. I went to see him multiple times and still decided to drop. He expected way too much from students. :(
Took him for 2 classes because he was pretty good the first time around; both during summer. Math is hard for me and he made it as simple as it could get. SCC math professors aren't the best but he's the most helpful of the ones I've had. He's funny and energetic, which made math less of a drag.
Only take this professor if you have no other options. No quizzes, just 3 tests and a final. He is very unorganized and chooses the hardest questions for his tests. He says that the test will be like the homework, but that is not the case. The only redeemable quality is that he gives partial credit for wrong answers as long as work is shown. AVOID!
Avoid at all costs. Exams and quizzes were impossibly hard. Expect a lot of trick questions from material that you've never seen before. Went to four different tutors and all of them were stumped on his review questions, which is a bad sign if you aren't a math genius.
I didn't pay attention to the reviews here before taking the class and I wish I had. This professor is so unprofessional and extremely unreasonable with his exams and grading criteria. His syllabus stated that the exam problems are based on the homework, which is simply not true. He even said during lecture that he purposely makes exams difficult!
He was nice but you never have quizzes and only tests. The homework program he uses grades you and is easy to get frustrated with. Pretty long lectures and consumes a lot of your time. About four tests and a Final exam. He does drop the lowest test grade which was nice.
He doesnt even teach! He goes through the book by reading the definitions and doing some example problems and thats it. Makes jokes most of the time and tries to be funny only. Homework doesnt go with the lectures and exams are different from homework. Theres no quizzes and no reviews before exams at all!
I took his online class fall semester of 2020. Uh. Zero communication. All lectures were just previously recorded stuff. No study guides / heads up for whats going to be on the test. Grades pretty strictly, if it's wrong it's wrong (again no explanation/help w reviewing stuff). I completely relied on the "question help," section in Mylab Math.
STUDY GROUP! Don't be afraid ask questions & go to office hours. GET THE BOOK. Take away: Hes here to help! Talk to him if you dont get something, slow him down to understand Classstressful/frustrating. Lectures different than homework Exams different than homework, 3 out of 5 were different formats. He used excel a lot, but we can't on exams.
I suggest meeting during office hours to get explanations of test results and homework questions. There are unlimited chances to get 100% on the homework assignments, which will help at the end of the semester. Steever replaces your lowest test score with your homework average. He's a funny guy, too.
Only recorded lecture with workout examples. HW are online and infinite attempts to get 100% so will be helpful in final, 4 exams drop 1 lowest one not include final and midterm. This class challenge you on CALC 2, if you get C you can get A with other professor. But I still suggest you take him because he really challenge your self-study skills
Steever does not help you in the class. We started with 30 students, but ended with 8-9. When I asked the other students how they were doing, most if not all said they were going to fail. I can say without a doubt Steever did not teach me the material, I taught myself the material. Take this class only if you feel capable of teaching yourself.
This guy is one of the worst professors I have ever come across. Doesnt lecture competently, disorganized, extremely condescending and just plain sucks. His grading his harsh, his tests arent reflective and if math doesnt come naturally to you, then best of luck. DONT take this fool. Please. Look at elsewhere for Stats!!
The exams are very straightforward as long as you do your homework (very lenient with), study guide and follow his instructions. His teaching style has definitely changed. Looking to pass the course without stress I would definitely take his class. Also, he provides prerecorded lectures to watch. Good luck!
Funny Professor, Has lots of fun in this class! I would definitely take his classes again! He makes math fun and understandable in class, Goofs off with his class and doesn't mind being corrected in class. I don't understand the bad reviews. I highly enjoyed his class!
Although he's very funny and lenient in class, I wouldn't really recommend this professor for math. I have nothing against him, I just didn't click with his style of teaching, and it seems like a decent amount of people feel the same way too. Pros: Funny, lax, very engaging Cons: Tough grader, lots of homework, teaching style somewhat confusing
A difficult professor, but one worth taking, as you will learn the material thoroughly. Visit him in office hours if you need help! He will be very happy to help you; he really does care about his students. He also is an interesting person; he possesses voluminous knowledge on almost every subject you can think of. Work hard, and you will do well.
Professor Steever is undoubtedly one of the finest professors I've encountered at Sac City. He genuinely cares about his students, consistently trying to infuse humor and practicality into his lessons.
The final grade is determined by a breakdown of 65% for homework assignments with no strict deadlines and 35% for the final exam. This structure is particularly beneficial for those seeking a more flexible learning experience. Without a doubt, I wholeheartedly recommend his class to anyone aiming for a high grade.
In Fall 2022, I enrolled in Professor Sreever's Math 400 and earned an A. However, in Spring 2023, I took his Math 401 and received a D due to inadequate preparation for the final exam. During Summer 2023, I retook Math 401 and got a B. I would gladly recommend Professor Sreever's classes to anyone seeking guidance in the subject.
I took Prof Steever's summer calc II class. He made what is a difficult class for many fun and easier to follow. He made many jokes and gave us breaks mid lecture, as they were 3 hours long. He set aside personal time for us to stay after lecture and study for the final, because he really wanted everyone to pass. I would take him again.
He was an entertaining professor; his lectures were fun. HW could be time-consuming because some problems were never discussed in class. But the way that Professor Steever taught is that he aims toward students "understanding math" and not just being able to do the HW. But he was making the class possible to pass; you just have to do your part.
Seems to care about calculus and teaching it to those who want to learn. A bit abrasive and very sarcastic at times but never offensive and always answers any question thoroughly. Not going to hold your hand though and expects you to very much put in your own work or at the very least attend office hours if struggling. Is sometimes unresponsive.
Lectures went at a good pace, and he responds well to questions or concerns. As long as you communicate with him there shouldn't be any struggles to pass his class.
If i had to choose between a mr steever cup and World Peace, Tranquility, Absolute Totality, And Humanity's Eternal Renaissance i would choose the c Do your homework, but remember the final could have impossible questions so study for twice as long as you do homework
although he is a funny teacher, his lectures are very confusing, and its really hard to understand his lectures, if you're able to teach everything yourself then i would take this class, but if not i would stay away
Steever is decent if the good professors got taken already. Weird teaching style, fun class though, pay very close attention to lectures. Ask questions often! Definitely use office hours as much as you can. Some homework problems he just didn't teach. Exam averages were in the 50s and 60s and he didn't care to much to change anything. Best of luck.
This is the only college class I have ever not passed. He mostly reads from the textbook and does not explain new concepts at all. He has a weird sense of humor and makes insensitive jokes. Probably one of the worst professors I have had during my time in community college. If you're able to find another stats or math teacher, do so.
Steever was overall a decent professor. the only complaints I have is that he isn't really to good at explaining the material it feels as if you are just copying down what he is writing on the board, and not really understanding the topic due to the lack of explanation, plus the homework was always way more different than what was done in class.
Took 410 over summer, worst decision of my life. His online lectures covered all of the theory with few practice problems, homework covered a whole bunch of other stuff, and the tests had questions that we hadn't seen before. It was 25% hw 50% tests and 25% final. ENDLESS HOMEWORK and test study guides were from another prof and not helpful
