Separates the Men/Women from the boys/girls
He's hard, but wild. Must drink his weight in Mountain Dew before class
This man loves to test hard, be prepared....
Don't take this class if you want to get an A. Even if you are used to getting good grades. Steffen likes to try to fail even the smartest of students. I think he gets a kick out of it.
he's nice, if a bit methodical in class. good sense of humor and friendly, but will make you suffer with bad grades if you don't really read carefully and THINK about the question. Really does separate the men from the boys;an accomplishment to get an A
The class dropped in number with each test. I had an awful time and have been told since that you shouldn't really take him in the classes especially lower bio classes
Lectures follow the text book verbatim. Steffen is tough but fair. If you need help, you need to ask, it's that simple. (He reminds me of the older brother on 'Everybody Loves Raymond')
Dr. Steffen takes pride in testing VERY HARD. You must be able to thoroughly demonstrate your knowledge. DO NOT expect an easy A. Great guy otherwise. Really separates all the wanna-be pre-meds from true meds.
Big Challenge, make sure you study. He definatly weeds out med students, good thing im a Psychology major. Work hard.
Make sure you study from the start, because he asks things that are really detailed. His classes make you want to fall asleep sometimes. Instead of writing down everything he says, most people just highlight the book as he lectures. The CD practice tests that comes with the book really helped me. The questions on it are similar to his tests.
Worst teacher ever. I despised this class. He went on and on for an hour with his slides of information that he took from the book... and then didn't test us on it. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Way too hard!
You can do fine, as long as you read the book. Except the book gets kind of boring sometimes.
He is a really stupid teacher who should just retire and go play with his 30 cats. He should also go and watch Independence Day. He sucks as a teacher and no help at all. All of his test are hard and you have to study like 27 hours per test. Tells you how his damn class don't take his damn ass teacher.
This class was very hard. He had to curve every test because the grades were so low. I recommend not taking notes, but highlighting in the book, because he goes so fast (and his powerpoints come right from the book).
He isn't as bad as everybody else says, although he is definitely harder than Alexander--but unlike Alexander, he expects you to fully understand the material. If you just go to class and understand the material in the book (the material he goes over anyway), it isn't that hard to make a B or even a low A.
This class is meant to weed out and it does. We started with 350 and have eaisly lost 100 people. You have to read the book, and you need to take your own notes. if you put in the time and are naturally gifted, you can make an A. I didn't take AP Bio in high school and I might have an A.
his class is really hard and a lot of studying is required. make sure you read every chapter he goes over and it helps to look it over before lectures. I got D's on the first twot test so i just dropped out.
He lectures, def get outside help.
typical weed out class, but he's not as bad as everyone says. as long as you read the book and study for his tests it's not hard to get a B, you have to work pretty hard for an A though.
I had him for 240 and it was a tough class. His lectures weren't really helpful because he just took it straight from the book. Just read the book and you will be fine. The questions are tricky and not direct so know the information, don't memorize it the night before.
Dr. Steffen is accessible. The problem is in his tests. Each test that I took looked nothing like the material that I remembered studying. I wish I had dropped out. I was within maybe 2 points of passing at that time, and wishful thinking got the best of me. If you don't have a C or better before Last Day to Withdrawal, better get out.

Joe Steffen is a very unhelpful teacher, he tells you more than he teaches you. You basically have to teach yourself everything in this class. The questions on the test have nothing to do with lectures, which consist of him just pulling figures from the book and rambling on about them with no real aim at explaining them. Steffen doesnt teach.
Not a good professor but it's a weed out class. Don't take this if you haven't had BIO 101 or AP Biology
Great class. His test can kiss my ass!
Teacher from the 70's, tends to ramble, talk very quietly (even with his mic), and gives tests with many items irrelevant to anything he discussed in class, all slides are copies from the book.
AP Bio saved me from an F. He is a very boring professor, looks like "Dr. Okun" from Independence Day too. He can help you with the material but the tests are still very hard and questions seem ambiguous.
AVOID HIM UNLESS YOU WANT TO HATE BIOLOGY.
Dr. Steffen is a really nice guy. He is incredibly tough, but you will actually learn a lot, even if you don't get an A or a B. He presents the material very well, but his tests are so difficult. He is very helpful when you go to him during office hours. Take him if you are thinking pre-med because he will prepare you well for the MCATs!
All you need to know is: If you're not serious and not prepared to work your butt off do not bother.
I hated his class!! It's absolutely terrible!
The man is brilliant, extremely helpfull during office hours. If your pre-med, this class will decide if you stay with the program. Have fun with his tests. They are extremely difficult.
I would not take another biology class if Steffen was the only option. His tests were so difficult and he didn't seem interested in helping me learn the material. I thought he acted very arrogant and apathetic.
I had no idea what I was doing. I hadn't taken Biology since freshman year of high school, but my advisor put me in it. I went to him for help outside of class and because of his help I ended up passing. Don't take the class unless you know biology. Also, he starred in the movie Independence Day performing an alien autopsy. "Release Me!"
Dr.Steffen is extremely intelligent but his tests cover material that is not discussed in lecture. For example, he will say in class that an intron is part of a gene and show a picture of it. On the test, you need to know how it is removed, where it's located, and all of the things it's not. Very difficult! Everything is in the book, though.
Wow! A very interesting professor, but his exams are not so interesting. The material covered in his lectures are about like 40% of the actual test questions. I highly recommend you get the textbook and REALLY read everything thoroughly and understand the topic or you will probably do bad on the exams. Good luck to anyone taking one of his classes.
I was lost the whole time. The first test was over 6 chapters and there were only 40 questions. Extremely hard class. I would take intro first!
While Steffen is difficult, if you take notes in class and read the book, I think you will do well. I really like this class, even though I was never the biggest fan of biology. I like it because Steffen forces you to think and not just remember. As Steffen told us, "You have to do Biology, you can't just memorize it"
Do not take this class unless you have had prior college bio courses or AP bio!Tests are impossible to get a B or higher(seriously, there were only a couple the whole semester out of a class of about 150). If you can take another professor for bio 240 do it! Steffen is a GPA killer. Hes a really nice guy, but its not wrth taking the class.
Read the book. Granted I had an advantage in that I took AP Bio, but if you read the book and actually STUDY the material once you've read it, you'll be fine. There's a summary and a practice quiz at the end of every chapter and I believe the book comes with a CD with more practice quizzes on it. I mostly went on exam days and still made an A.
For all the people that think that this class is impossible...IT'S NOT. There is a little something called studying. I'm not the smartest person, and I am going to make an A (92, 100, 93 were my first 3 test grades). Quit being lazy. It's not impossible to make an A...
Despite what others may say, Dr. Steffen's class is not very difficult. The material is challenging, and normally the class is large; however, if you STUDY and READ THE BOOK you'll do fine. Although I had covered the material previously in Bio AP, its not impossible. Furthermore, memorization won't help, LEARN the material and the concepts!
Tests are ridiculously hard but prepares you well for MCAT.
All you really need to do to pass this class is read the book. For me, attending was not nesscecary, for all he does is use a slide show of images and direct quotes from the text book. Do all the practice questions and tests at the end of the sections, and attend SI. It's a challenging corse but not impossible!
Like others said this class isn't that hard. All you need to do is read the book and study the pictures. I rarely went to class and got an A, but i did study the book every day. When i did attend, i actually did worse on the tests. Its a college Bio class straight outa the book, just work though the book learning the concepts and you'll do well.
Lets be honest...this class is really a breeze. If you are premed and struggle, prolly shouldnt be premed. His tests are difficult but it prepares you tremendously for bio 329 (which is a difficult class). If you plan on going to bio 329, you better take him and not the other "easy" professor.
HE IS TERRIBLE!! HE RUINED MY GPA, SO COULDNT GET KEES SCHOLARSHIP, AND I GOT AN ACADEMIC WARNING BECAUSE OF THIS BASTARD. dont study, you will fail it anyways. lectures, notes, books you wont need these. BECAUSE HE WILL FAIL YOU. i studied so much but none of them was on the tests. my biggest regret in my life is STEFFEN
His lectures are really dull, but it's not necessarily his teacher style that makes the class awful, it's his tests. They are incredably difficult. The average on his first exam is usually a 60!
He tends to follow the book very closely so read and you could do ok, but his tests are extremely hard and his tests are the only grades in the class, so you have to do well.
He's your classic Bio teacher (aka looks like Darwin). I'm sure he's a genius in the field, but sometimes that can be hard to translate into the classroom. If you haven't had a detailed biology course before (AP biology for myself), you'll be doing a lot of studying. If you have prior experience, you'll do good with some quality studying. Not easy.
It's not an impossible class. I had no prior biology experience(besides like freshman year of high school) and I still made an A. You just have to really read/take notes on the book for understanding(which takes a lot of hours) but if you put in the time, there is no reason you shouldn't do fine. Mr.Steffen is a really nice guy too.
Good teacher, makes some hilarious comments during lectures. Distant from students, which is completely understandable, as there's usually about 355 other students with you. Very nice guy outside of class. Tests (except the final) are very detail-oriented, so attending lectures and reading/keeping up with material is tremendously helpful.
Steffen made his lectures very listenable. Hard tests, but he's very approachable if you have questions after lectures. You really must know ALL the material taught to be happy with your test grades.
I simply hate this guys tests. I dropped out of his class and took Bio 240 with Hoffman because he doesn't realize this is a freshman level Biology class. Of course maybe he just doesn't care.
Very difficult exams, must use book and lecture notes. Recommend going to SI sessions, they are extremely helpful.
Great teacher, hard tests
Nice guy but his tests are extremely hard and detail oriented. It doesn't help that they are your only grades.Lectures are straight out of the book so if you read and study ALOT, you'll do good. If not, hope to God your lucky.
I LOVE dr.steffen. He's a really nice guy, and really knows his stuff. His class is very difficult I will say, his tests are stressful and very hard. He's a great teacher tho. DEF not a class you can just go to class and take notes and pass. I have three words for you READ, READ, READ...then read some more, seriously
Dr. Steffen is a decent guy, but he is extremely hard. I have never had to study so hard in my life to get low scores. BIOL 240 isn't worth all of the hard work you put into it. It takes up way too much time. His tests are impossible.
He is very straightforward in what he expects out of students. If you work hard, study, and stay up-to-date in the class, you can pass. The people who complain about how terribly hard the class is either didn't go to class, didn't study enough, or were looking to slide by.
He's a very nice teacher, really fun and super helpful. The tests however are really hard. Believe me, while you are in this class you either develop a close relationship to the book or you fail.
very hard. never had a class so hard in my entire life and the tests are very difficult. Made A's all through my life until this class has came and bit me in the ass
Bad professor! I made all A's my whole life until I took this class. I am failing with a 43%! His tests are impossible and his lectures are the most boring thing I've ever sat through! He doesn't know how to teach the material and he is constantly wrong. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I haven't learned anything. I can teach myself better!
Nice, interesting guy but what he does does not qualify as "teaching." Straight from the textbook power points - I think he just uses text company slides. I have an A in the class so far but his tests are more difficult than necessary considering how and what he "teaches". Take Alexander - at least you can get sample tests
he was awful. no matter how hard i tried i still ended up with a low c. in fact i was trying for a low c. his tests are impossible to study for because the questions are so specific. all of his lectures consist of powerpoints on the figures in the book. he just really was awful.
Despite what others may think he is actually a very good professor, however in order to do well in the class you must read and understand the book. He tests are hard but if you put in the time you should do well.
All these people calling him a horrible teacher are just bitter. Yes, he teaches straight from the book. Yes, his class is hard, but it IS a weed out class. It certainly weeded me out. If you get a bad grade in his class, it's because you were lazy and didn't study, and you definitley have no shot at med school.
I took this class in the fall. This is a hard class and it is designed to be that way. People taking Alexander to get a good grade or only setting themselves up for failure. He is a brilliant person and willing to help. You just have to be willing to put in the time and effort for the class.
Dr. Steffen is a funny guy and good teacher. He answers any questions, and will help you out if you go to his office, or stay after class. He also puts his lectures online. The course and material is very hard though. Tests are extremely in depth. Don't fall behind on reading, and you should be fine.
Very tough professor, basically teaches off the power point. When he's running out of time in lectures he skips the actual notes and just talks about the figures.
This class is what you make of it. Steffan skims the power points and records lectures, but you basically have to teach yourself the material. Read every chapter of the book. SI session ARE A MUST. I obtained an A in the class on my own doing. This class is a weed out class, and if you manage this class, its down hill until cell molec.
I read the book and went to class and got good grades without attending SI. His tests are detailed and tricky, so take your time on them. The final was brutal, though. Contrary to some ratings, he's actually a pretty laid back and cool guy.
I really struggled with this class but I ended up with a C. Keep up with your book and go to SI! Nice guy though so it made it hard to hate the class. He curves the grades a lot so you'll usually at least pass. You have to put the time in.
He was awful. I have a BS in Biology (Had to retake this class due to career change), and barely made it out with a C. It appears as though he enjoyed giving poor grades.
Dr. Steffen's class was difficult, but he is helpful. I took the final this afternoon, and I did not think it was that bad. I am a Biology semester in my first semester of college who will receive a B in this course. My advice is to study, watch the Tegrity videos, read, and ask questions. He enjoys answering questions and explaining the material.
Steffen is a great professor; not because his class is easy, but because he is the most helpful teacher I've had in college. He was always eager to help me with the material in and out of office hours. That one thing makes all the difference. He is also very clear, and he follows the textbook pretty closely; doesn't care what edition you have.
Horrible. Without prior knowledge of biology, you will have to read the entire textbook and watch every Tegrity video 10 times to do well. I'm sure he was willing to help, I was just so lost to even know what to ask.
Just save yourself some time and skip this one. Chances are, even if you "think" this class is required, it won't be for whatever major/career path you're doing the following semester anyway.
Steffen is a great professor. He is really excited about the material and made me want to show up for class and learn the material. Study and read the book and you'll do fine.
Professor Steffen makes Bio 240 really interesting. Steffen does not test on anything that he has not said in class (all classes are available on tegrity) and he is always willing to help outside of class. He is a really nice guy.
All the rumors you've heard about this class are probably true. This is definitely not an easy course. However, Dr. Steffen is a great professor. He is passionate about biology and is always willing to help. There are in-class quizzes, homework, and the tests. He goes straight from the book and posts tegrity lectures online. Just study REALLY hard.
I took this class this summer and it is even harder in the summer. no curves, no homework, no quizzes, no dropped tests. nothing- just the 5 tests that are crazy difficult. this class is very rushed in the summer, the professor is very nice though so it's hard to hate because of that. But, it s very hard and needs lots of time and studying!!
DON'T BE LAZY. Anyone who coasted through Highschool with out having to study will have a rude awakening. He does all he can to help without babying you. Always willing to answer a question and is very kind about it. I never aske him a question and him make me feel stupid for doing so. He really loves students, especially if you make the effort.
Avoid this professor at all cost. He is terrible and unnecessarily difficult. He records all of his lectures so attendance is not mandatory. After listening to the lectures and reading the book, you'd think the test would be doable. However, the average is a C. I've managed to fail every test and I study a lot. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Read the book constantly and go over his tegrity videos a lot, dont go to class cause its a waste and he will confuse you some. It all will look easy but come test time, everything is on a whole other level. Average for class is C- for exams. Those who do really good on them did really good on the AP bio exam. AVOID HIM AT ALL COST
he is very hard. he often goes on rants during lecture. during his lectures he also ALWAYS assumes you know what he is talking about which is never good. he is very good at answering questions during class and is really nice during his office hours. over all its a pretty difficult class ..
Very difficult. Read the chapters and the practice questions at the end of each chapter in preparation for the tests. They are multiple choice/matching with one or two short essays. Attend lectures and watch tegrity if you want an A. Do ALL the homework. It's not hard but it'll help after the tests bring your grade down.
READING THE TEXTBOOK IS A MUST! He really only has time to hit the highlights in lecture, so reading the text is requisite to really understanding the material. Every section seemingly builds on the next, so you can't pick and choose what to read, you have to understand it all. An A is only possible if you put in the independent study time
he is so hard to understand. i had never ever had such a hard time in Biology prior to taking this course. i went to REACH and got help from friends. his test are SOOOO specific. i do not recommend this professor at all. he made me rethink my interest in Biology. i made the mistake and stayed in this class all semester. dont be afriad to drop it.
People who say this class is too difficult are not willing to put in the work necessary to earn a good grade. Also, the SI Sessions are an extremely useful tool for succeeding in this class. Dr. Steffens is a great teacher; those of you who label him as quirky and strange haven't taken the time to talk to him and realize that he cares a lot.
Dr. Steffen is a great professor and is passionate about his work. People who complain about the difficulty of the class are clearly majoring in the wrong subject. If you can't put in the time for this class, then I do not recommend taking it. The SI sessions really really really help, but you also have to study independently.
Dr. Steffen gets a lot of bad ratings primarily because it is HARD to do good in his class simply because the amount and depth of material is immense. However, Dr. Steffen is a funny guy in lecture, knows biology like no other, and cares about his students. He may be a challenge compared to other professors but you will learn more than ever (MCAT!)
Recommend highly. Steffen is hilarious and I loved going to his lectures. He knows what he is talking about, and explains clearly with demonstrations and examples. This being said, the class is difficult. I study my butt off for this class, and currently have a B. Also, you're screwed if you don't read the text book. Learn a lot in this class.
Dr. Steffen is a great guy. He is funny, but the course is very hard. The only reason his reviews would be low is because he teaches a difficult class- there's nothing wrong with him personally. I am not doing well in the class because it is really difficult, but I actually enjoy lectures and I go to all of them. Make sure to attend S.I sessions!!
I got a 4 on the AP biology exam in high school, which covered all of Bio 240's material. I read the book and power points, but his tests were made to trick you. Also, he would give you 5 minutes to write a four paragraph response on a quiz. I should have received an easy A in this class, instead I'm struggling.
A very challenging class. Sometimes Dr. Steffen's lectures will leave you confused or he will talk about think that don't really help you understand the material. However, he is more than willing to try and help you understand better in office hours although sometimes it doesn't help. GO TO SI. You may also want to do small group tutoring w REACH.
Dr. Steffen certainly knows the information and is willing to answer your questions, but what he lectures doesn't exactly help with tests or quizzes, and his grading isn't exactly fair so be prepared for the unexpected. This class requires a lot of reading and your time. Still, you learn a lot, but it's mostly on your own.
He is THE TOUGHEST Professor in the entire Biology Department. His tests are so in depth and tricky it will leave you wondering what the hell you just did. This dude is the definition of a SAVAGE.
He's awesome.
worst professor I've ever had.
Steffen designs his tests to be as difficult as possible. You basically have to memorize the text book and devote your life to this class to get an A. His lectures are pointless to attend and are often confusing, but he gives pop quizzes from time to time so it's in your best interests to go. The tests and the class itself is curved so that helps.
Very challenging. Do not plan to take this class for easy credit. READ READ READ and READ some more! The reading is the only thing that saved me in the class. The lectures are helpful to some extent. The exams are like taking the AP Bio exam over and over every time you finish a section. Come to the exams prepared! Don't be lazy!
By far the hardest class ever taken. No matter how long I studied, I could never achieve a good grade on a test. Spent more time on this class than I've ever spend on any class before. I do not recommend.
I have taken a few classes with Dr. Steffen and really enjoyed him. When I had to decide if I needed to drop 244 the first time I took it he was more than happy to discuss my status with me. He is a really helpful teacher and helps students out with fair curves on his exams or in the case of 244 the course as a whole.
This is absolutely the worst class I have ever taken in my life. I've never felt as if I couldn't make it through or pass a class before. The only thing graded in this class are tests. No homework, no extra credit, nothing. I failed the first exam & he pretty much made it clear to me after that there was no way I could pass the class. DO NOT TAKE
This class depends solely on how good of a TA you have. The TAs make the exams and lectures; the professor overviews them from what I heard. The professor also made the three homework assignments, which are pretty easy if you follow the instructions in your manual. I honestly can only rate the TA, I had Katherine King who was very clear & thorough.
In the class I was in only two people got an A and the majority a C or D. He is great at teaching but he makes his exams too hard. Only take if you're incredibly smart.
So Dr. Steffen is not at all involved with the class even though he sets up insane standards for the class. I did very well in the class because I had an amazing TA, Kat King. She understood the class was designed for you to fail so she tried to help in any way she could. The quizzes are easy, but the exams are hard and they make up your grade
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. THE ONLY THING THAT THE CLASS IS GRADED ON ARE EXAMS. I TOOK THE SECTION WITH 4 DIFFERENT PROFESSORS AND IT WAS THE WORST THING EVER BECAUSE THEY ALL TAUGHT DIFFERENTLY WITH DIFFERENT STYLED EXAMS. ITS VERY HARD, AND IT WILL MAKE YOU VERY DISCOURAGED
Prof Steffen does not teach the class at all. So it all depends on your TA. There were labster simulations almost every week and hw
horrible.
Very hard, will leave you feeling exhausted because all I did was study for this class and it was never enough.
4 exams. thats it. he doesnt even know the answers to his own exams. challenge every question in his office hours or else you fail. :)
He posts his lecture slides online and doesn't require attendance, but his lectures add so much more information than is on the slides so I felt like attendance was required for a good grade. There are only 4 exams that you're graded on and they are pretty difficult so I'd get ready to study hard but they're all curved and pretty straightforward.
There is a ton of content he goes through in class, so I was constantly going to the class's SLA sessions to solidify understanding. The only grades a quizzes/tests, and many of the quizzes are extremely short. Many of the quiz/test questions are poorly worded, so if you miss 1-3 questions on a quiz, it's easily a 6 or 7/10.
Kids from other Bio240 classes were learning completely different things. Reach tutor said she would've put the same thing on the short responses that I did yet I would never get more than half credit. 8 Quizzes, 4 Exams. Bought the 90$ textbook, he told me reading it would be detrimental, to memorize the slides. You don't receive your exams back.
Powerpoint are difficult to understand, even the SLAs had to look things up b/c there either was no info or the info was too broad and confusing. Grade only depends on 4 exams and an optional 5th + 6 quizzes. A friends went to his office hours for help and he told her his class was too advanced and she should drop out.
If you can help it, absolutely do not take his class. I would study for days and understand the content well, only for none of it to be on the exam. Grade depends on 4 exams and a few quizzes. Even the SLA's were confused as to why he was not teaching us certain things that we needed to know. YouTube videos are far more helpful than this professor!
For all the dual credit students (dmhs). There is a limited word count in this review, so I can't go off on this guy as much I wish to but if don't want to loose your humanity, then I would avoid adding this course, under THIS name, in your cart. If you happen to take this class, in simple words, you need to study for every exam like the AP exam.
Do not take unless necessary. Look for other options. The tests are very difficult and nothing like the quizzes. The quizzes are straightforward and are exactly what is on the slides. He is a nice guy, but his lectures are boring, his content is difficult, and he gives no other credit besides tests and quizzes. Do not buy the textbook!
My mom took him and she warned me not to. I should have listened. Strictest grader I have ever had. Biology class but he makes it more about how good you can write according to his liking, even if it follows the rubric. He should retire. Dont take these old heads at UofL. Second time I have had a bad experience with a professor over the age of 70.
Professor Steffen's class is notoriously challenging, but with the right approach, it can be quite rewarding. Attending lectures, reading the textbook, and using study aids like unstuck study can help you succeed. The grading is heavily exam-based, so be prepared to put in the effort.
