Stein is a very easygoing guy. He cares about his students and is leniant on many things. But he was a new teacher this year and not only had he never teached before, he had never taught precalculus either. Sometimes he had no idea what he's talking about
This guy knows nothing about math. All he talks about is how great Mac....**** Mac. He seems like a CS guy more than a MATH guy. His lectures are so damn boring and fall asleep. I am bored to tears. Go back wherever you came from you blonde freak you.
His class is really easy, it might be a little boring since he redo every example from the book, but his exams are easy. take him and go to class everyday u ll get an A. really cool guy. Not a blonde freakat all! He is really funny; always try to make thi
Great guy! really cares about students! really helpful.
JP's The MAN! Great teacher. Yeah he does copy things out of the book and it can be boring but hes great. He gives extra credit and gives u curves. As long as you attend class you should be able to pass with an A easy.
Very interesting lectures, clothes, computer interests. Also so attractive...
This guy is krunk up the wazuu. If u can't get an A in his class then u'r a dumbass. Gives huge curves. Makes me wish i never went to UT
i dont know so far our class average on the first exam was a 68... a lot of folks failed so i dont know if he's going to give a curve at the end of the semester like some of these folks are saying and that's how they got "A's" because most of us right now do not have A's or B's, i dont know???
JP must have gone thought some kind of change with the New Year, the previous remarks are contradictory to his current demeanor. He is a cool guy but; no calculators, the tests do not match the homework, and the test take 2 hours, the class is 50 min. The Dept. may be forcing these rules??
Yes, like the previous statement, the tests take like 2 hours to complete but it's only a 50 minute class, so you end up guessing at the end... he gives extra credit, he's extremely approachable and he'll help you out to understand it, side note: he's extremely hott too, wink* wink*
no homework- but it does help as prep for the exams (multiple choice) but they are kind of long to do (20 quest. usually). he's very helpful too and explains the section with examples during his lectures.
he's really really sweet, and helps you out a lot, gives extra credit, just try your hardest if math isnt your thing... 20 questions on test, lecture is good etc... take him
There is always something wrong with his tests, (out of order, written wrong, ect) so a lot of time is wasted trying to figure out if he messed up on the test. No Calc 1st test.
about previous comment, that is pretty true... but you get the points for the questions he makes mistakes on, so it's cool... tests take a while... he's cool
Most boring professor I ever took. The guy obviously on some crack. Maybe he should take that IPOD out of his own crack. Do not take this guy if you really want to learn. This guy is a loser.
PPL! whoever find his class is hard, you really need to use your brain, the stuffs he teaches are exactly from the book! Practice!!practice!!that's the one and only thing you could do for all math class!work out the hwk problems, dont ever memorized how to do it, but learn how to do it!
THIS GUY IS AN IDIOT!! He teaches straight from the book; but does NOT test on the same material. He makes many mistakes in class, and is not very helpful if you go to see him during his office hour. He is a GRAD student... BEWARE!! Take at own risk
How did he get this job? He fumbled even on easy problems taken from the book! What kind of graduate student is this guy! Disgusting.

If you work the problems he suggests, this class is not difficult. He answers questions quickly and is clear. Enjoyable lectures.
Nice guy. The class average for his tests was in th 40-50 range. He assigned extra credit for 30 points on each exam, though. He drops the lowest exam grade.
this class is ridiculous! there is extra credit and hopefully it helps, but the tests are unpredictable and so is your grade all semester long. he is definately not clear and likes to talk about galaxies when we should be learning pre-cal. hard to get a hold considering he does not have an office hour.he is very tricky, take time on test!
ok this techer is freakin retarded!!! you take his tests that he got from satan and then says you will do fine if you do the extra credit (that takes like 10 hours each) then you get it back to find that you dont even get full points on it!!! if you have any sort of brain you wouldnt take this class!
Guy seems like kindof an ass to me personality-wise, but he's a pretty good professor, I think. His tests ARE really hard because he wants to make sure you understand the material thoroughly, but he explains WHY things work how they do in class. Very clear.
Don't waste your time with this teacher! He is inconsiderate & extremely unhelpful. He doesn't seem to know what he's doing, so he won't teach a sufficient amount of pre-cal to prepare you for the tests & frankly doesn't care. The test questions are irrelevant, & he doesn't have a grading scale. It's definately not worth your time or money.
i took precal in high school and he did not teach precal, more physics based cal. i never went to class (it was pointless) basically i just would go into the test blind, get a 30-40 something on the test, do the extra credit and then somehow i ended up with an A in this class.honestly i dont feel like i learned anything, except to do extra credit
Worst "teacher" by far at UTSA. I learned much more by reading the book he professes to hate. He had trouble working simple problems in class and had to refer to the book and still made dumb mistakes. Tests are diabolical and near impossible to work in time allowed. He cut Final short by 45 minutes. I still got an A in spite of him.
By far the WORST teacher I've EVER had. This prof is not worth your time or money. You'll most likely end up making a A' in the class tho bc he offers extra credit out the butt.I didn't learn ANYTHING.I'm relying on my high school precal to get me through Caclulus I.He says he cares about how much you learn when in reality he doesnt care at all!
By Far the BEST math professor here. Not sure what the others are talking about. They must not have taken any other math courses here. JP spends time going over things that should have been taught in your high school Algebra classes. He explains in detail every section he reviews. As for the extra credit, 1 time and a few days before the final.
Fall semester- failed. summer- got a c. in the summer we only covered 3 chapters out of 5. no extra credit. i made 20-40- during school semester and 50-70 in summer only cause I studied my ass off. does NOT prepare for Calculus. HORRIBLE TEACHER! Do NOT take him! save yourselves...
Good teacher, lots of examples, tests are multiple choice plus he works for Apple so he hooks you up with free itunes if you ace a test.
Come on JP... It's a bit obvious you're rating yourself just to have a positive comment or two on here. Get over the fact that you're a lousy teacher and get over yourself. Take a teaching course.
this guy is HORRIBLE so far, he doesnt teach well, says you don't need the book but then assigns problems for it. oh and your homework assignment on the first day of school is to do every problem in chapter 2 (Pg99-175), and its due the following monday. in addition he complains that he doesnt have time to answer stupid questions.
this guy is a great math teacher! i usually am not that good at math but i got an A. You just have to do your work and if you have trouble don't be afraid to ask JP. His tests were crazy and the whole class was pretty hard but if you study you'll be okay. and he offered extra credit for almost every exam. plus you actually learn not just memorize!

take this class if you want 125 problems for the first homework assignment, he is a student himself, he doesnt really care about teaching the material.
The only plus is that you don't have to buy the book. All of the homework problems and odd solutions are online. But last weekend, he assigned us about 250ish problems to do. Gah. His tests are wierd and so are his lessons. I usually copy down problems online to work on them in class to give myself time to HAVE A LIFE.
JP is a different kind of teacher. Don't be scared if he's your only option. He grades on averages so if your making the same failing grades on the impossible tests like everyone else you'll come out with a B or better. Theres a lot of homework but you get used to it. Its graded on completion so it brings your grade up a lot. You'll learn a lot!
this teacher seems nice but his class WILL bring your gpa down. you have to slave yourself over his 200+ homework problems. his lectures covers a couple of sections if not a whole chapter a day. he goes by the lessons fast, and assumes you know everything he just covered. take him if you've already take cal, trig, and precal or want a challenge
HORRIBLE!!! If you like Mac comps, star wars, and watching stupid pictures of the atmosphere, YOULL LOVE HIM! Other than that he cant teach. He's a student himself. If he was a student in his own class, he would rate himself as a bad teacher. I don't enjoy getting +200 problems a night when the first 50 problems seem impossible to do! DONT TAKE!!!!
Is it kinda boring? Absolutely. It's Precal. JP knows hes making the class hard but he promises to curve at the end. You might feel like you want to kill yourself but take a deep breath and keep trying haha. The guy actually seems nice despite his tough-guy image on his site. Put forth an effort and you will probably do fine.
jps tests are HARD bc he wants u to UNDERSTAND material, not just redo problems that you've already done in the hw.he seems like a nice guy&is always polite/helpful when u ask questions.i wouldn't take him for future classes bc of hw load and bc the way the tests are written.morale is low in class bc tests r nearly impossible 2 pass.grades on curve
JP is tough but fair & you will either hate him or love him. Sometimes he's a little unclear but everything he says in class is posted on his website, along with a video of each class. He's helpful during his office hours as well. I recommend him if you're willing to work hard & if youre planning on taking Cal I. Avoid taking him if you're lazy.
JP is a different kind of teacher. I like his personality overall but he doesn't know how to teach. This was the only class that I did not make an A in, he assigns lots of homework and he purposely designs his tests so that the average will be like a 40 (He says this is good). However, he does curve at the end of the semester.
JP is very different. TONS of homework that is not necissary. You will learn but mainly because you have to. JP is a literally a genious and he wants you to think like him. The main thing i learned in this class is how to think through problems.
Don't take him. Just don't. You have to do every single problem in every single chapter (apx. 80-150 problems/4-6 hrs of work) for graded homework. He sucks at teaching and goes too fast. He's a pessimistic grad student and thinks he knows everything. Beware of pop quizzes. I dropped to 1023 becauser this class is unnecessary and too freaking hard.
He creates stupid tests that have nothing to do with what you've learned and are really hard.
you guys are too hard on him! he isn't that bad! he didn't give out any pop quizzes in our class and just gave us all full credit for them. his tests are really hard but he promises a curve at the end of the semester. wants us to actually learn, not just memorzie. definitely prepares you for calculus.
at first he will seem really cool and you may like him.. that ends as soon as you see how much homework you have. it is also hard to do homework and tests when he is constantly making errors in class. if i new how he was before taking the class i would have looked for someone else. he also told me to drop the class after the drop date.
forget about doing well in a traditional sense; a 45 test average is like a 75 in other classes. average on the final was 24%. does curve a ton...don't be too depressed when you get a 20 on one of the tests and realize a monkey probably could've gotten the same score by guessing randomly
He is actually a good at knowing his stuff, but a lot of students have a hard time understanding whta his test material is. Yeah the solution may be easier than we think, but a lot of us didn't know. This is why his test are extremely difficult and he curves a lot. A lot of homework too so be prepared. Great guy though.
VERY HARD, but once you successfully complete it, you look at precal in a whole other way. It's a good class, and I got an A (i got a 30something on the final exam too...he curve's all his tests based on the class average, so its not too bad). The workload is extremely extremely EXTREMELY heavy, so if you decide to take him, be prepared.
You just gota be able to understand his certain type of teachings... other than that.. good proffessor, but the work load is heavy, the tests are hard, but no one really does good in them so he curves up.. n e ways, if you take this class, you look at math completly different, and youll find yourself being able to do more than you thought
i USED to think i might wanna minor in math but after i took his class that changed, he really didnt teach & seemed to assume u knew everything already--ended up dropping the course to save my gpa...wouldnt recommend to anyone
horrible teacher. thinks he's funny but isnt. i got sucked into his class because someone told me he curved his tests but dont let that fool you. you have no sense of accomplishment after taking his test no matter how much you study. you leave hoping to get 2 right. thinks everyone is dumb cause we dont know math. thats why we are taking the class!
WORST professor ever! Averages on tests were 10's and 20's. Everyone had to guess on tests which are tricky and impossible without a calculator. Studying for the tests will actually lower your grade. He is horrible at teaching and has almost been fired many times. I loved math until his class. He also gives a huge hw load. Doesn't curve.
WOW...after this class I would never become a math major. EXTREMELY HARD! The problem with Stein is he's so smart he feels that we should already know the material. Work load is heavy and tests are pretty impossible BUT... at the end of the semester he does a huge curve based on the class average.
HORRIBLE!!!Literally the worst teacher I have EVER EVER had and I'm a Senior so I've had my fair share. He doesn't teach and just rambles on about his own major.Test are impossible. No calculators!!Everyone would just guess on the tests!!He will ruin your GPA!!NO JOKE!!I don't recommend him at all!!
Hard class! Not easy at all-you really have to dedicate yourself to math if you really want to surpass the average grade of 20s and get at least a 70...he does ramble about and then you notice that he is saying something important...Tests are difficult! the prof does a pretty good job in teaching though...he does give a huge curve. A lot of HW!
He was not very good at actually explaining anything. He already knows what he's doing so he just assumes you can follow his way of thinking. He's a nice guy and offers extra credit. I couldn't have passed if I didn't already know what he was talking about. He curves ALOT though so I guess that helped
JP's a pretty cool guy, its just the class is way to hard, and he cant explain stuff well, but all you have to do is keep up with the work and make sure ur above average and u should do fine, I had a 79 and it curved to an A cause the class ave was like 40 something, dont take him if u dont have to
All I have to say about Stein is that UNLESS you plan on taking Cal II or higher DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! Pre-Cal, first of all really isn't necessary in order to take Cal I, and a lot of time and energy is needed for his class. Therefore, for the majority of us who are not Math or Engineering majors, Stein simply should be avoided.
You guys dont know what your talking about. JP is awesome. He is SUPER smart and its pretty fun to hear his thought on society. Its a hard class only if your lazy, man up and do some studying.
Pre Cal was not easy. I had a hard time understanding what he was trying to teach. He spent a lot of time complaining about Microsoft, but he is funny. I did find the fact that he posts videos and has a website helpful though. His tests were pretty much impossible. I think he is smart, but if you don't think the way he does, the class is difficult.
He's really good at math. Personally, i really liked the class alot.
Not a fan of this guys teaching method. Despite admitting that he found the material difficult to digest and had to teach it for several years before getting it down, he expects you to just grasp each and every concept and treats you like an idiot if you don't follow. The guy is way too self important and condesending, not recommended at all.
He was a really hard techer! I didn't understand the unit circle until the final and I had to sit still and completely focus. My friend who is really good at math helped me learn from his notes, which is the only way I passed and made a B. TONS OF HOMEWORK! But if you are cool to him, he will be cool to you.
I dont know why his ratings are so low, honestly. He knows what he is talking about and i guess it depends on how you learn. Im a bio major and have always found it easy to grasp something if i understood how it worked. im taking his class right now and i love his teaching style, im understanding how math works which makes it sooo much easier.
I gave him a five for clarity because the guy knows his stuff and communicates it very effectively. The problem is he teaches concepts straight from the book, then tests your ability to do crazy problem solving on every quiz/test but never demonstrates problem solving in class...right idea, however expectations too high for his teaching style.
makes everything seem so easy during lecture but his quizes are ridiculous. class average is about a 24 but he curves crazy. do not take if you are planning on going past pre-cal. you will learn nothing for Cal 1
HORRIBLE! If you like Macs, Star Wars, and watching stupid pictures of the atmosphere, YOU'LL LOVE HIM! Other than that he cant teach. He's a student himself. If he was a student in his own class, he would rate himself as a bad teacher. I don't enjoy getting +200 problems a night when the first 50 problems seem impossible to do! DONT TAKE!!!!
Low ratings are unwarranted and from people who simply don't get it. Lesson - what you've been doing all your life in math is memorizing rules and applying them without any understanding of why or of what the mathematics actually mean. He teaches conceptual understanding, that is, true understanding. Difficult but rewarding class to take.
GREAT teacher. He really knows what he is talking about. Most of his class is made up of quizzes and 2 tests which challenge you in good ways. Gives problems that require thinking, not ones you already can answer. I recommend him if you really want to learn. Posts lectures online. www.mathematicalradical.org is his website. Very informative. Check!
I got a B in this class after walking out of every quiz (no exaggeration) and attendng half the classes. THe only way you'll pass this class is by the curve he gives because you won't learn anything. It's so frustrating you'll just walk out too.
if you're planning on acutally take calculus after this class...dont use him as a professor!! I was totally unprepared going into Calc cuz this precal class was worthless.
Oh. My. god. This class is ridiculous. This is by far the most difficult class I've taken IN MY LIFE. I feel okay listening to the lectures, and I am a diligent student (take notes, pay attention, etc.) and I've had nothing but EPIC FAILS so far. RUN AWAY AND DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you know what's good for you! He'd better curve generously...
i enjoyed the class. he enjoys teaching, you just have to enjoy learning and listen
He's a great teacher, he really knows what he's talking about. The only problem is that his midterm is nothing like what he goes over in class. I suggest going to the Tues/Thurs class. Before the quiz, he covers what he went over and makes the quiz fairly simple to take. No homework which can be a plus to some.
His teaching methods are different, but he knows his material. You just have to be able to grasp his concepts as he explains them; most of his problems are common sense. His quizzes are a lil more complex than his notes.Form study groups, they help alot! No homework, and the attendance was not mandatory which i liked.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! He never stuck to the subject of what we were learning. He is a student himself and obviously does not care about teaching anyone else. He was not totally prepared to teach the lesson. He always refered back to the book because he wasn't sure about how to do a problem. He made the problems harder than they really were. HORRIBLE!
Ok, I really tried giving him a chance...the first 20 times. If you have to take him, RUN in the other direction! No joke. He doesn't give examples when he "lectures" so when you take quizzes you don't know what you're doing. His tests and quizzes are WAY too hard for the level he's teaching at. DO NOT take him if you want to excel/actually learn!
The man can't teach. Hes a very smart guy but his teaching is horrible. For one, his lectures are boring and pretty much useless. To make matters worse, his communication skills are terrible. If you do not have a strong math background, find someone else.Even if you do, find someone else.Seriously, he wont prepare you for Cal 1. Not by a long shot.
Don't take him, you will drop his class anyway after taking first exam. his class looks easy but you will see the difference on the exams and how they are so difficult. you will be shocked
He's VERY tough when it comes to quizzes and tests; unless you have a good test-taking background your best bet is study groups. His website helps too. If you're worried about maintaning that 4.0, don't take your chances, but if you really want to LEARN something, take him. His "math intuition" techniques can really help later on.
If you aren't into math, don't take it! His lectures are pretty much useless, he rambles, and he is very cynical. Though he is smart, his communication is horrbile. Worst class I have ever taken. There is a midterm and quizzes every week. The midterm was 10 questions, no multiple choice. You will end up dropping this class.
This guy knows trigonometry (Pre-Cal)like you wouldn't believe.I took him several semesters ago&happily walked away with the B that I earned.I was very close to dropping but stuck with it.Tests were difficult&back when I took him it wasn't uncommon to have 75-100 questions for a HW assignment.Intelligent man, writes new tests every semester.Goodluck
By far the worst teacher I have EVER had! He is so unorganized and never does what he promises. It took half a semester before we got any assignments. Talks about his own philosophy all class instead of teaching, class average is a 35, which is NOT limited to only my class. He is a very smart guy, but can't teach at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
He is an amazing prof. If you don't like math don't take him, he doesn't teach from the book, but from his amazing understanding of math.. He is not like a regular prof that just gives you the info and then an exam, but he takes his time to make sure you understand ex. why pi is pi. A lot of extra credit, huge curve got an easy A I really liked him
When I took this class, It was the 3rd time I took precal in college. In this class you might not learn much, but your cal basics + understanding will vastly improve. As long as you do the homework and study while everyone else in the class is complaining you will get a "A", as well as a profound new interest in mathematics. I got a 60 which = a A+
I dunno why people say he sucks, I like his style of teaching. (using a very visual method of teaching) and he knows that we suck as math so he makes it understandable for everyone. He does not grade on a 100 point scale but on the class average. If the majority of your class is dumb, then you will pass. The best math teacher in my college.
Terrible. That's all I can say is terrible.
Stay away from this class! He is rarely on time, and tests are nothing over what he tells you to study! Class averages on the tests are in the 30's.
Cool guy, ridiculous exams. I have never made a B in my life and I owe my first one to JP. I worked extremely hard to try to make a good grade, even resulting to a tutor! The way he explains things is crazy and makes no sense. STAY AWAY!!! I wish I had.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!! HE CAN'T TEACH FOR NOTHING... GETS OFF SUBJECT AND GETS PHILOSPHICAL FOR EVERY DETAIL... DOESN'T TEST ON MATERIAL GIVEN IN CLASS.. STAY AWAY IF POSSIBLE!!
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!HE WILL NOT TEACH U ANYTHING.U WILL JUST HERE HIM GRIPE ABOUT HOW AMERICA IS SO FAR BEHIND IN MATHEMATICS & BLAMES IT ON K-12 EDUCATION!NOTHING THAT HE GOES OVER IN CLASS IS ON THE TEST.CLASS AVG WERE IN THE LOW 30'S-MID 50'S.WHAT DOES THAT TELL U.STAY CLEAR OF THIS PROFESSOR AND IF U HAVE TO TAKE HIM WELL GOODLUCK,REALLY!
The exams were hard. The prof is pretty funny in a sarcastic kind of way....a lot of HW
This class was ridiculous. If you are in it, get ready for a horrible semester. His tests are near impossible and I did much better in his class when I stopped attending his class and started teaching myself out of the book.
This man is horrible. I honestly didn't understand anythinghe was talking about. Although he gives nice curves on test I wouldnt suggest him as a teacher
JP Stein is the worst professor I have ever had in my two years of college. He is very condescending and continuously telling us what we should of learned, but didn't because of a broken system. His tests are insanely difficult and there was a 20 point curve on the final grade at the end. The long homework's have nothing to do with the tests either
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! he wants us to learn by ourselves and only come to class if we have a question. He talks and talks about how the educational system in the US sucks and how wonderful his tablet pc is. The book, quizzes, and tests are online. If you really love math and like learning on your own take him, but otherwise, stay away
He is definitely the absolute worst professor ever!Does not teach at all. Complete waste of money and time. I'm pretty sure I didn't sign up for an online course, but that's what I got. And it was not a good thing. I'm paying for him to teach me not so I can try and teach myself from some online book that makes no sense. Honestly, do NOT take him!!
Worst math teacher I've ever had. Completely cynical and cares more about his own opinions than actually teaching pre cal in an understandable manner. Last time I checked I didn't sign up for this class so I could teach myself, but that's what I got.
I dont know what this professor is like in real life. But I have watched his online podcasts. I think that he is the greatest teacher ever. He actually cares that you understand the material. He is the best teacher I never had. i only wish my community college teacher cared like he does. Dont let his cynicism turn you off.
Like everyone else has written, Stein is hard to understand most of the time. He really does want us to learn the material and when he actually explains things it's easy to understand. The midterms and homework were all online. Only the final was taken in the classroom. Since everything was online it was really easy to make an A on everything.
Although he did tend to rant about philosophy of math, he explained WHY you did things in math rather than simply how, which in the end clarifies so much.
I took business cal with him and he was excellent. Lectures are straight from the book. Homework was online. Tests and quizzes were also online at a set time or within a certain window of time. He made this class easy and was always willing to listen. Any time there was a technical problem he extended the deadlines so we could turn everything in.
You didn't need to attend classes to understand the work, MyLabMath had examples to help with the questions for homework. Quizzes were a lot like the Homework, the tests like the Quiz. You can easily get an extension on any assignment, everything is basically online. Stein himself was nice.
the only good thing about this professor is he would forget to take attendance so he just stopped taking it.besides that it would always seem that like he never would understand anything
Professor Stein is an outstanding professor and an even better person, he's understanding if you miss a deadline and will give you the opportunity to take the assignment again as long as you communicate with him. All assignments and tests are online on MyMathLab, he does use a textbook in his lectures but you do not need to buy it.
His lectures are good but he is a little quiet, not exactly mandatory to go unless he is counting attendance as a grade as everything can be learned online. In all honestly, anyone who rates him as a bad professor is just lazy.
Stein was one of those math professors who tries to make everything as simple as possible because he understands that the more you talk about a topic, the higher chance you have of overcomplicating it. The actual curriculum is unbelievably hard but Stein isn't necessarily the person who gets to decide the curriculum.
Amazing professor.
Prof. Stein himself is a great guy and it is clear that math is his passion. It's just that the way this course is set up is just horrendous and you will do pretty much all of your learning alone. His teaching style is more old-school while this course is not, and it's clear he hates it which makes learning more difficult. He's a funny guy.
I took MAT1133 with Professor Stein in his first semester at UTSA. His instruction of the course was thorough. Though he could get off topic at time, his tangents often included lessons on how to better ourselves as students and people. I would take him for any math class in a heartbeat.
He's such a chill funny guy that makes this class easy. It's more hw heavy than tests but you get to retake all quizzes. Honestly he's really nice and understanding and he explains things better than the textbook/hw vids.
Professor Stein makes this class manageable even for non-math people. Lectures align with the free textbook, and everything is online, so you can learn at your own pace. I found Unstuck AI and other study tools super helpful for test prep.
This course is a set course and the workload is not determined by Professor Stein, like many of the classes at UTSA. There are no tests throughout the semester, only weekly quizzes which you can retake. He is a cool professor but can get off topic sometimes. I'd recommend taking him if you struggle at math but can learn online through videos.
avoid this.
He's a funny guy but he is not meant to be a professor. It's fun to listen to him talk but when students do poorly on a test he does everything to shift the blame onto only them. I know many people who have dropped or failed this class and I do not recommend him if you really wanna learn.
For your own sanity, stay away; he always just puts down students. Horribly explains things; review material never helped, just an endless cycle of failing. Horribly organized, honestly my worst professor ever/ teacher, no structure, and just mindless scribbling. Thought it would be much easier since i've never done so poorly at math/tests.
funny guy but man he can't and shouldn't teach. He expects you to know most of what he is teaching already and if you ask for a more detailed explanation he kinda just does the exact same thing again without explaining then moves on. I'm sure he's great for some kids and this class allows retests but if math isn't a strong suit It won't matter.
Really glad I had him for 1053. He was an easy grader and cares that you know the stuff. Only downside was the inconsistency with due dates. He constantly moved them back because people were lazy in the class. Outside of that I really enjoyed it.
Great teacher.
basically online work, he doesn't really require you to show up to class or anything like that, but his lectures don't really make sense. Makes college algebra sound like calc 3 a lot of the time and kind of expects you to know what he's talking about before he talks about it.
Stein is a fine person, he's funny and sarcastic, but as a professor it works against him. He rambles a lot and gets off topic.I almost never attended a lecture nor did I study, so I can't give a fair rating teaching-wise but from what I saw he can be hard to understand
If you want to learn something, do not take this professor. He is a good man but not a good professor. SAVE YOUR GPA!
If you're looking for an easy grade, then this is the class for you. Quizzes would allow full retakes, replacing the original grade with a cheat sheet you provided, but he did say he's changing it for Spring 2026, making it the average of both to increase engagement/attendance in class. Lots of assignments are busy work, nothing hard.
The college algebra curriculum is the exact same for all the professors, quizzes and assignments are the same. Prof stein is a chill guy, he didn't make attendance mandatory which was nice. The textbook is free. You get to retake all the quizzes. the catch is the final, if you fail it then you fail the whole class regardless of your overall grade
