taught at his own pace not what was good for the students. hard to keep up with if your not very good with math
This guy is awesome! He's very nice and always willing to help w/ homework.
Buck helped me nail down a statistical calculation in my dissertation that had me stumped. Not that he did it for me, but he showed me what I was doing wrong in my cypherin'. He's pretty much my hero for that good deed.
This is a tough class. He is very interesting because he doesn't talk for just math for an hour. He tells stories as well. The only thing that is annoying is that he writes every thought on the chalkboard. He needs to use more numerical examples.

Awsome teacher. He explains things so that the abstract becomes clear and easier to relate to. funny too!
He gives lots of practical examples and applications, and obviously has a passion for the material. Very easy-going, and hot.
Buck is a pretty cool guy. Always willing to help out if you're lost. He doesn't make going to math class a dreaded task, and he has a lot of patience when the class or just individuals are stuck on something.
Buck helped me out a lot in Calc. He was always willing to help outside of class. He also was pretty funny and told some good stories. Great curves for the tests and never collected homework and rarely gave quizes.
if you're not good at math, he can be a little confusing, but he grades on the curve and he's pretty easy going.
Cares about his students and will go out of his way to help. Makes math interesting, obviously loves the subject. And he has the ability to make complicated concepts clear. Best math teacher I've ever had.
I came to this class dreading it because it's MATH, and I'm an art student. Fortunately, Buck made it easy with his VERY extensive notes and willingness to clarify. He spoon feeds the information, but the tests, thank god, require you to apply the formulas in everyday situations.
Professor Stephen, Does an excellent job! Professional, fun, and stresses the important parts making learning easier. Please give this man a raise!! Hard working!!! A+ Review sessions, and available for any questions!! He has the patience of saint, and the good Lord has given the gift to teach.
He will give you all of the tools needed to pass his class you just have to go to class, if you need help get a tutor early and then use the ta's as backups.
Buck is awesome for his laid back teaching style. Doesnt require attendance, but definately makes it worth your while. For Math101, Buck is your man
Seems like a great guy and really knows his math. However, he can be confusing sometimes.
I like Buck. He was very funny and made going to math class not so bad. He is way better than my T.A.
Buck's a pretty cool guy and I definitely think that he knows his stuff. He's pretty entertaining but i know he totally checks his rating on this everyday. Also he cut his beautiful golden hair a while ago and I never really got over it.
very unorganized
Overall Buck is a good teacher. He knows you don't want to be there (we're all going for our B.A.'s) and he works with it. Very laid back guy, although he needs to write neater so we can read what he writes on the overhead!
Puts problems on the board but does it in his head. Needs to be able to explain problem better.
Buck was a great teacher who was very helpful. I would reccommend him to anyone who wants to take a math class.
Buck is probably one of the greater surprises I had this semester. I came into this class very fearful since I had procrastinated in taking this class in the first place. However, this class wasn't that bad at all and I LOVE the fact that he writes down everything he says so we won't miss a thing.
Very good at exmplaining topics. Also very funny which made the class interesting.
this is an easy class for anyone who has had atleast algebra 2 in the past.
Buck is great at using real world examples when teaching new things. The lectures he gives are often funny, based on the class, and help you remember the material. Very fair in grading, the effort you put in will directly determine your grade. Intelligent but not intimidating.
Buck is a great math teacher..he tries very hard to make sure that everyone is getting the information. He is funny in his own silly way, and I actually didn't dread going to this class.
Buck is a great teaher. He talks about going out the the bars to help us learn math. For once I didn't hate going to a math class. He is always avaliable to help.
This teacher rocks. Both in class and one on one. He always goes the extra distance to help you understand and has very good explanations that are hands on and practical. He always has funny stories in class too, makes me laugh. No matter what class from algebra to advanced topology, he is good!
Let me be honest, this class is not a blow off class, do not be fooled that this is a high school math course. It is HARD, but Buck is a very very very cool teacher! Come to class everday and put forth your best effort, and you will get a B. :) Warning: you gotta work ur ass off!
Buck knows his stuff, if very helpful in class. He truly is a gem of a math teacher. Too bad the topic is math, he would be great teacher of any subject, but he makes math 101 bearable at least. If you can, take him for Math 101, he wrote the book (literally)!
Buck is an awsome teacher...however math101 is a ****. The only reason I got an A was because I attened 99 percent of the classes...HINT: attend class. If you are going to use this as a blow off course, do not take this course
I only got to attend one class... so sad.
Buck really bends over backwards for his students. If you do not do well in this class it is because A) You didn't attend regularly B) You didn't do your homework C) You didn't attend recitation and ask for help D) All of the above.
For anyone that has to take math 101, I def. reccomend Buck. Best teacher there is
I agree with all of the previous comments. In case you didn't get the point: This guy is awesome!! The true definition of a good professor!

I had Buck for all 3 calc classes. He was one of the better teachers I've had, definitely one of the best at NIU. He breaks everything down into examples you can understand, and writes everything down on the board. If you need help, he's there to help. I do have to warn, his exams can be difficult. You will learn the material if you go to class
Buck is a very interesting person. Very opinionated (which sometimes shows a tid bit in class and I just crack a smile), but that does not affect his teaching. He provides many great examples that everyone can relate to (and yeah some of them are a bit drawn out but people really need to lighten up). Overall, he's a great professor.
"Buck" as he likes to be called is a character. He is good at trying to make examples in the book clearer. He is very good at disagreeing with the author's notation. He had a lot of things going on the semester he taught 430 and it kind of showed. He was late sometimes and canceled class a couple times. Over all though, I liked him.
I like him a lot, but he seemed distracted this semester by other things. Most of the time lecture was very beneficial, but sometimes he would go very fast and not really make it clear what he was doing or why he was doing it. I'm not a math person, so the material (especially the last half) was pretty difficult for me.
buck is great. he's an excellent teacher and always willing to help you understand the material. remember to memorize definitions for the tests and you'll be fine!
Go to class and do your homework and you can ace the class
"Buck" is cool. He makes funny jokes and is really laid back. The grading scale is soooo easy too: 85% can still be an A. Boring, but thats math (to me, anyway).
Awesome teacher, very helpfun. Tests are really hard but he always curves them. Make sure to study definitions though, they're always the first 20-30 points!
Buck is absolutly fabulous. Tons of fun in class, and this is the best math class ever. And I have to mention both the TAs. They are awesome people. Take this class, do stuff you're supposed to do, and it's an easy A.
If you must take this class, get Buck. He's easy to understand, moves at a reasonable pace, and is very understanding of scheduling problems. Just take his advice, and go in for help if you need it, and you'll get an easy A. Some hard concepts, but he's VERY helpful, and his TAs aren't your typical dumbasses. Great prof!
Buck was totally a chill teacher, always gave examples that were on the homework, and was really cool about scheduling problems. Plus he has awesome taste in music.
Interesting man
Wayyyyyyyyyyy too fast maybe because I'm a math****but the math smart people that took him say if you suck at math dont take him. If your good at math then he's your guy if not then take this at a communitty college.
Buck is awesome! You come into class and he plays hippy rock music (one song per day). You cover a lot and the easiness of the work decreases significantly with every passing class. It isn't hard to get help, though...(ie: recitation). You can pass the entire class just by passing the final. Lots of hw, but it helps when it's test time.
He knows his stuff and is a good teacher. Definately take him if you are a self starter. Otherwise, you still have a good chance, but it will be harder than average.
You can't help but like the guy. At times he seemed to be unprepared, but he got the important stuff accross. Sometimes he didn't feel like teaching and we had a few "content-free Fridays."
Buck was amazing! One of the best math teachers I have ever had. He makes class fun, but you learn a lot. Definitely take classes with him.
The WORST teacher I have ever had. Goes EXTREMELY fast and his handwriting in unreadable. On top of that once he is done writing he stands in front of what he wrote so u can't copy it down. horrible teacher, do not take him!
Buck is AMAZING! He is very passionate about teaching and extremely helpful. If having trouble ask for help or to slow down and he will!!!
He really knows his stuff. He presents math in a fun way even with the dry topics. He tries to keep everyone engaged. He is also always willing to help during his office hours. Overall, a fantastic teacher.
buck is great very enthusatic, very knolegdable and passonet about his sub. took him for both 229 n 230 for a reason. he will make u earn ur grade but u will lern somthin loved goin to class and very approachable outside of class hmwrk is easy tests are hard but hill prepare u for em, cant say enough good things about him
Buck said at the beginning of the semester that he wanted us to struggle. He achieved his goal. He was 5-10 minutes late every class, he didn't show up for the final, he never returned graded homework, and he lost several of our tests. In his office hours he just reiterated what he said in class. I would not recommend Buck if you're taking MATH420.
Quite an interesting guy, though you'll probably be bored if you're not into computers or history. I felt like he explained content quite clearly but others in the class seemed totally lost. Didn't require homework but his tests were difficult even if you did the homework. Very smart and kind nonetheless.
He is hard to follow in class, his voice makes you want to sleep, his notes are unorganized and sloppy, there is only one recitation a week where I learned the content(the recitation was taught by a TA). Do NOT take this class with the professor! By far my worst professor in my career. He knows his stuff but he DOES NOT know how to TEACH it.
Buck is a very nice and intelligent guy, but he's not easy at conveying ideas to a class. He would always say that the three tests or even the homework would be easy but time and time again, they'd be super difficult and never matched what you had to study. But the class is set up so that it's impossible to fail as long as you do all your homework
Buck jumped around in topics, without really going into what the topics are useful for in CS which made it seem disorganized for a CS-specific math course. Tests were easy, but study guides weren't offered as often as he promised at beginning of class. Overall, the class was good even if he occasionally got annoyed from lack of participation.
I am taking Professor "Buck" right now. I am literally sitting in class writing this review. Here it is: Buck tells you how to do the problem incorrectly 4 times and shows the "actual" way to complete the problem afterwards. You can teach yourself more efficiently thna he can. He has a very monotone voice and you become bored easily. Don't do it.
His class is SO BORING. I'm wide awake when I get there, but I nearly fall asleep every class. He speaks super soft and writes his lectures where you can read half the words. He does not respond to emails. I have to follow him after class as he walks away for questions. Shows up late to most classes. Nice guy and is lentient but no personality.
I had to take math 101 as a requirement freshman year. He's a nice guy but completely monotone. The lectures were almost unbearable. Easy and boring class but GO to the lectures, there are miniquizzes that will really affect your grade. You need to buy the book to be able to do the homework assignment.
He is very helpful, but not clear sometimes. He clearly presents the information and gives examples on why you would use what you are learning. Learn the terminology for every chapter. The tests are not tricky, but make sure you study. Overall, I passed the class with a B- and that was with minimal effort. Take the class with him if you can.
It's a math class, so it isn't all to entertaining. You go over the basically the quiz problems before the quiz and the tests are straight forward and on the easier side. I did the homework for the first chapter then never did the homework again because he doesn't grade it and goes over examples again. Shows up late but an awesome guy
Dr. Stephen (Buck) is literally the best math professor I have ever had. I was also in his Honors Math 232 class. His lecture style is casual, and he will go over something 500 times until you get it if he has to. He is always willing to meet in his office, and visits are totally worth it! I wish I could have him for every math course I take!
He is a really good teacher. Some people may complain about him and understanding him, but if you simply ask him for help or seek him out, he will be there. Very nice guy! Pay attention in class and detailed notes are very important, also do homework, he collects it!
The class wasn't super hard if you went to class and took notes. His notes can be a little scattered and confusing at times, but he is really looking to help students do well in the class!
He likes to work through long drawn out examples in class that don't make sense then tell us we won't need to know it for test. Practice exams are a joke they don'5 resemble actual exam at all. He doesn't realize not everyone in his lecture is as smart as him. Homework assignments are also ridiculous long. Only pro is lenient curves for class.
Nice guy. However, he didn't seem prepared for lecture. Scribbled notes, sometimes rambled, and would often fly through without getting feedback from the class. I needed to read the book to keep up. If you're a self starter, you'll do okay. Positive note: Exams can be challenging, but doing the practice exams helps. Also gives generous exam curves.
lecture is a joke long examples that make no sense, we don't even do problems that are on the homework. Webassign is horrible. 2-3 homework assignments due a week test are ridiculously hard especially compared to other professors who teach this course. Don't waste your time with the practice exams either. Nothing like the real thing.
He was great! After taking this class once before I needed to make sure I was on it so I could pass this time. I went to office hours every week and he was very helpful , he assured me if I continued to come I would pass and I did. Test are hard but his practice test help , although class isn' mandator he sometimes gives out random extra credit.
The biggest problem is that the class is hard. Stephen is a nice guy who knows what he's talking about but has a habit of getting lost in the math and not teaching. Don't be afraid to go to the MAC for help and your recitation is a god send.
This professor was terrible. He was very kind, but never got our assignments back to us in a timely manner. He also didn't teach content that he said would be on the final, and the teaching was incredibly disorganized. I do not recommend taking his class in the future.
Prof. Stephen is a good professor if you wanna pass . As long as you do all of the homework, do good on the quizzes, and show up to class, he gives extra points for attendance, and extra credit. If your a bad test taker, I recommend Stephens. I failed all of the tests and still walked away with a C+. He curves based on total performance.
He is a really nice guy. he definitely wants his students to pass. He des preach bumping students who show up so I made it a point to show up and sit up front. I frequently talked to him but his regular office hours weren't available for me. Students who seek help in office hours are guaranteed the pass.
Nice guy, seems to care but is lazy. Never had a syllabus, goes fast sometimes in lectures, handwriting is hard to read. Said he would post notes online but never did. Rarely would follow through on things he says he'll do like post a study guide on a certain day. Collected HW only once and took attendance 4 times, no quizzes and 4 easy tests.
He is very confusing when he is giving his lectures. They are very different from the homework that is given. Is willing to help any student but makes it confusing. His handwriting is very hard to read so keep up with him, so pay attention !!
The good: he is really nice and genuinely cares that you learn the material and, if you put in the work and ask for help, he will offer it. The bad: he's very disorganized (my class didn't ever get a syllabus so tests seemed to be assigned at random) and his lectures can be confusing and make the material seem harder than it is.
I would recommend 100% very caring. Show him that youre trying hard and hell help you pass
Exams are difficult, but if you show up to class and show that you care, he will give you 150/650 of your points for "participation, quizs, etc", boosting your grade. His lectures are very word heavy for a math class, but helps you understand.
There was no rubric for anything. Just let us do whatever for our projects. Does not put grades in often- only grades were exams and projects. If you pay attention in class, you should do well in the class. His lectures are hard to follow, but I can say that I actually learned something. Also, he's not the best at responding to emails.
Nice guy whos lectures are a little long and tedious, but he is available to help if you ask. Takes forever to grade things and is very disorganized. He is responsive to emails, knows his subject well, and can help students. I'm very lucky to have taken AP Calc in high school, or this class would have been even harder.
