very very very good. holds interesting, lively lectures
Dr. Stumpf is a great professor. He answers your questions, he is patient and he is fair.He makes the subject interesting and fun.
very intimidating!!!
Made very boring subject very interesting! Works students' opinions into interesting class conversations. Relatively easy exams and no surprises. Made me appreciate Technology
amazing teacher. learn sooo much, hes really excited about his work, and it is contagious.
Prof Stumpf holds interesting lecture but sometimes he makes the class sleepy. Class quizes are easy, tests are easy as long as you can identify the art and one major essay. As always, read the book, you'll do fine
He talks a lot and kills you on the tests. Final this semester was 3 essays and 20 terms to know. Gives pop quizzes on the day your 5 page paper is due, where he knows no one was reading the chapter required. His grading is strict. I would avoid him. He comes across in class very relaxed, but don't be fooled.
He is a good teacher. Tests are easy as long as you study, as it should be. Very interesting if you're into art!
I was very impressed. You really don't need the book as long as you attend and take notes. But the lectures are interesting and relevent. I am not usually awake in my AM classes but his got my attention. Doesn't have many opportunities to get grades. Gave one badly timed pop quiz but admitted the mistake and curved it significantly. Fantastic prof!
Really good teacher!! As long as he knows you respect him, he'll respect you.. and maybe ease up and give you a good grade.
He is a good teacher overall if you actually LIKE the subject but he can get a bit boring. Class notes are essential for tests/quizzes! WHATEVER HE WRITES ON THE BOARD >>> WRITE IT ALL DOWN! He's helpful if you have a question and he's fair but a strict grader! Gotta be at all classes to get all notes! I liked him but i didn't like how he graded!
Arguably the finest professor MC has to offer. He is patient and has a good sense of humor, his class is fun and your will learn alot from him if you pay attention. If you dont, you wont, but it would not be from lack of effort on his part.
really good, and im a student who dose not want to work much, but i learned lots and did well
He was a good history teacher. His lectures are basically 90% of the textbook, and details r in da book. He does not give out many assignments. One 5page paper, about 2 short assignments, and 1 pop quiz. Only gives extra credit on midterm and final. If you maintain an A, U WILL NOT HAVE TO TAKE FINAL! Take class notes. Recommended if u pay attenti
cool professor, def. knows his material. comes off as easy going but dont be fooled. take lots of notes, they come in handy for tests and quizzes. the book is pretty much useless. i didn't read a page of it and got an A both on the final and midterm. however, i did study my butt off. if you come to class and participate, easy A. also, memorize term
Intelligent archaeologist. Knows the material. Interesting lectures. Attendance is mandatory. Homework is mostly reading but also gives quizzes. Optional final if you maintain an A. Take notes. Expects regurgitation with tests in essay format. Fair grader but not many chances to improve. If you have a strong interest in history, take his class.
amazing. take his class if you are into history. all you have to do is pay attention and take notes. def recommended
Prof. Stumpf clearly knows the material. His lectures have the ability to pull you into the subject and, at times, that period of time. I wasn't into history, but because of his teaching style, I ended up taking 2 of his history classes. (My major's criminal justice.) He's clear on his expectations. Fair grader and very helpful outside class.
He is a great teacher. He uses the information by telling you historical stories and he involves everyone in the class. The tests, exams are hard. There is a lot of material to cover but he is a fair grader. He has a great sense of humor and is very passionate about history.I highly recommend him.
I love Prof. Stupf. He made history come alive. His class was one of my favorites. I looked forward to it with anticipation. He is very willing to help. He is NOT intimidating. And his discussions are vivacious and enlightening. It is not hard to pass his class; he will challenge you, but if you are trying, you will succeed.
interesting
He is a very interesting professor. His actual lectures are excellent! As long as you take very through notes you will do fine on the tests. You dont really need to read the text book but you might want to scan over the primary sources! Go to class because you get 10 extra bonus points for attendance!watch 300 btw it will help out!
Great teacher. Interesting lectures, really knows his stuff, exams come straight from notes.
A good and cool Professor...interesting lectures, likes people who participate in class, overall you will never have a bad time in class.
Excellent professor. easy to follow lessons, willing to answer any question. Answers come from the books, and not generally a hard course if you keep up.Took both ancient world history and history of Europe part 1.
Interesting lectures. If you show up, take notes, and study you will pass this class.
Arguably the finest professor MC has to offer. Interesting lectures, really knows his stuff, exams come straight from notes. He is patient and has a good sense of humor, his class is fun and your will learn alot from him if you pay attention. If you dont, you wont, but it would not be from lack of effort on his part.
Prof. Stumpf is great. Very knowledgable. He has lots of delightful anecdotes to add to the lecture. He makes the subject very interesting, and he can be funny when he wants to be. He loves to meet with students and is very helpful. Make sure you take good notes in his class; most of the tests come from thelecture.
meets 2x a wk. lectures were boring & long. 1 big paper, 5-7 pgs. mid & final were hard, well not a walk in da park. must buy & read 2 bks. i hated 1 bk, waste of my money. da other was info bk. map quiz hard. 300 pt. class. need 2 know info from bk & take notes on da board but sumtime he goes all over da place. he put things up & move elsewhere.
excellent prof. very heplful and always kept class fun and interesting
Probably one of the smartest people I have ever met. He makes his lectures so interesting, I was never bored. You have to listen to his lectures and take notes. He also likes to meet up with his students and is totally open to explaining things that you don't understand. All around a great professor.
Keeps you interested throughout lectures. If your struggling, go to him and he'll REALLY help you. Brilliant like House (minus the jerk). Good sense of humor. Gives alot of terms that you have to understand well for the midterm. Get an early start on the paper so that he can tell you where to improve. Excellent prof. Take him.
I have taken three history classes with Stumpf, and I am sad he does not teach any other classes. He is an excellent professor, and goes into details. I have only read one page out of any of the textbooks. Anything you need for a test will be said in class. So take good notes. He is available via email, and his office, and he loves to help.
We had to buy two books for the Ancient History course. Although we read a few pages and did minor homework on them, I felt they were unnecesarry. Most of what we learn will be from his lectures. Great teacher though, knows his material perfect. Makes the class fun.
one of the best professors i had at GWU when he taught there. loved his Roman history course and was sad to see him leave. The GW classics department should have kept a professor of this caliber. for those of you who enjoy ancient history - take this prof.
Professor Stumpf is a very intelligent man, who is very passionate about his field of study. He is not an easy "A" teacher. His test and quizzes combine knowledge from textbook reading, along with class notes. You must take notes in his class. Although his class requires a lot of work, he is always willing to help.
No doubt in my mind that Stumph is a truly GREAT professor! His lectures are invigorating. He knows his stuff. He tells lots of intriguing stories. On the down side, there is a handful of readings to do, but him you pace it right and do the intended HW as needed you'll be good. He is not clear on when we have hw and tests which bothered me.
Prof. Stumpf knows how to make history sound interesting and exciting. I had him for both HS 186 and HS 151 and used the same textbook. He's strict on attendance and reading, other than that a really cool guy! You will learn a lot from Prof. Stumpf. Tests are based more from the lecture, so please take notes carefully.
Very interesting class. Prof. Stumpf is very knowledgeable. Attendance is mandatory, readings too.
The class is boring and if you don't like history don't take this class. The Professor is not easy.
I took 2 of his classes. Most fun i've had at MC. The man sucks you into it and the material from lectures was just so easy to recall that I didnt even need to study for exams. Thats how good (or easy) he was. Best history classes I've ever taken.
This professor seriously knows his stuff. The rare questions that stump him aren't relevant to the tests and he'll try to locate an answer by the next class anyway. Not the easiest class, but he gives students more opportunity to succeed than any professor I've had in a long time. Take his classes!
His lectures are absorbing and full of information. He encourages open discussion and occasionally assigns readings. He is extremely knowledgeable. I once went to his office to get a paper and sepnt an hour talking about history. Great person and awesome teacher if you like history. I've taken three of his classes. I would recomend him.
Great professor! Must attend class and take notes as he bases most of exam questions on his lectures. He is enthusiastic and helpful. Really enjoyed this class.
By far one of the best Professor's at Montgomery College. If you appreciate a challenge his class can be but his helpfulness and enthusiasm is motivating. Teaches very eloquently; you will learn a lot.
BEST professor ever. Really knowledgeable, enthusiastic, fun. I'm even changing my major after his class. It's not easy, though, you've got to study hard for an A but it's absolutely worth the effort. EXCELLENT. You won't regret it.
HES THE BEST I ENDED UP GETTING A B IN HIS CLASS !!!! amazing teacher!!
He's very interesting in his lectures and makes his class enjoyable. But its no easy class, covers a lot of material and very few assignments(final is worth half of your grade). Overall good though.
Very clear and funny, He is actually an archaeologist so he has great stories about the places you are learning about. Wants you to understand more about why something happened rather than the exact date. Really cares about your success, come to class and participate. He notices and really appreciates any extra effort you put in.
His class is fun if you like history and he is a good professor. However, when it comes to taking quizzes in his class, he will not give you a clear idea on what to study. He will just tell you to go over you notes and use the key words he hands out. So if you are planning to take his class be prepared to study all of the work.
Before his class, I hated history. He knows what he's talking about and his lectures are really interesting. His extra credit questions are based on his lectures so listen up! He doesn't give a study guide for quizzes which sucked. But make sure you keep your syllabus with you always so you know what to note during his lectures. He's pretty chill.
Dr. Stumpf is very nice and loves his subject. Don't be late and turn off your cellphone. Take notes and read the material and show interest and respect. I recommend.
THIS IS THE GREATEST HISTORY TEACHER OF ALL TIME!! HE COMPLETELY CAPTURES YOU IN HIS LECTURES AND STORIES TO THE POINT WHERE YOU DONT EVEN WANT TO MISS A CLASS!! ALL YOU NEED IS TO DO PAY ATTENTION AND YOU WILL PASS. IF YOU DONT LIKE HISTORY, YOU WILL AFTER THIS CLASS!!!
He is a great teacher and knows his topics very well. If you just need credits or do need this class for your career then do take him. I really enjoyed history prior to joining this class but his lectures are good enough to encourage you to change your career to history. His assignments are very helpful since, but do study for his tests.
Prof. Stumpf is an effective communicator and effectively conveys the material in an organized manner. The lectures were thoroughly enjoyable and informative. Furthermore, the professor displays true passion for the subject which enhances the classroom experience.
I took HS 151 with him as well and I really loved both classes. He assigns a number of reading assignments, but only 5 factor in for your grade. Other than that there's only a midterm, a map test and a final. If you take the terms sheet that comes with the syllabus and study those terms as well as other subjects he focuses on you'll do great.
This is an amazing class. I always hated history before. His lectures are interesting and engaging. There's just not enough time for everything! I would willingly take a longer version of the class. Study hard, and you'll be okay. He cold-starts the class (provides the info, then names/dates), which some classmates had trouble with.
This is an awesome classes. His lectures are very absorbing and full of information. You actually won't want to miss a day because his class are so good! Take good notes and don't procrastinate on the essay and you should be good.
great professor. Extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and dedicated to students.
(Fall 2012) Was very good at making the information interesting. Was willing to answer questions. His assignments and tests are all writing (definitions, short answers, essays, and a 10-12 page paper). If you are not so good with writing, you might want a different teacher. If you're okay with lots of writing, however, he's a good teacher to have.
Was very good, knew what he was talking about and had fun teaching the class. However, he mumbles but that really doesn't matter since overall he was a great professor. He expects a lot of and from you. That is what all professors should be like-wanting your best and your all.
EXCELLENT, SUPER KNOWLEDGEABLE and fun professor. His lectures are GREAT. Very clear, knows and loves his subject to the point that it is contagious. Very helpful if you ask for help. One of the best professors at MC. You won't want to miss a class. Fair grader too, just study for the exams and you'll do fine. THE BEST HISTORY PROFESSOR EVER.
I have taken multiple classes with Professor Stumpf, and each one of them was a delight. He is passionate about the subject, and gives a wonderful in-class back-and-forth. HIGHLY recommended!
Professor Stumpf was really knowledgable and was really hopeful. Only thing is that attendence is extremely important because exams are based on the lecture. Not much chances to improve you graded. If you enjoy history you should take it with him because you will find the class really interesting.
He is very passionate about what he is teaching and he gives clear guidelines about what he expects. Most information that he tests on come from his lectures so be sure to take clear notes but feel free to supplement with the textbooks. He engages the class in his lectures, assigning roles in hypothetical situations s overall approachable
Fabulous professor. Makes history an exciting subject.
I honestly don't know how people passed this class, or whether they actually did. Class was very boring, it consisted of him talking and pictures on the PowerPoint. Exam was based on the keywords (a lot) and essays. I enjoyed sociology more than history :/
Dr. Stumpf is a good professor but he's definitely an acquired taste. I took the class in the summer so it was extra intense. Either way, be ready to read a lot from the textbooks and know your geography because he gives map quizzes and such. Nice guy, understanding, but this class is not an easy A. You have to earn that grade.
Really knows his stuff. Will give a damn about you if you give a damn about history. If you don't, don't take this class.
This is one of the rare classes where I was sad when class ended. One of the best classes I've ever taken + the best one @ MC so far. Funny & knowledgeable prof, interesting & engaging class, + awesome class atmosphere. Not much hw, but you learn a lot. 2 tests + 1 paper. If you pay attention and don't procrastinate, it's prob an easy A.
veeeeeeeeeeery long lectures, If history is not your favorite this class can be a drag. Although the professor is pretty interesting and knows his material. Not much work to boost your grade outside of the midterm and final.
Professor Stumpf is awesome. He's more than willing to help his students when need be and gives multiple opportunities to elevate one's grade. If you read in his class, you will be fine. Lectures are long but very interesting. He's super nice, he even bought us pizza at the last study session before finals :)
Great professor and orator. His tests are hard so you really have to know the material, but his class is worth it.
Prof Stumpf is an amazing professor. He definitely knows his history. THE TESTS ARE HARD. He doesn't have a study guide or power point slides. As long as you take notes of EVERYTHING you'll do okay. There isn't much homework (5 very short papers) which is the only way to bring up your grade. If you take him be prepared to work for your grade.
He teaches by lecture with a PowerPoint of images to guide himself. Get ready to take notes by word of mouth. Come to class. He gave 2 tests: midterm and final which are ridiculously hard. 5 homework assignments: 50 points. 1 map quiz: 20 points. Midterm: 50 points. Final: 150 points. Final is most of your grade. Almost unfair. Not an easy A.
There's not much he grades so attendance is definitely mandatory if you want an A. Midterm and final are both based on his lectures which is all word of mouth, no powerpoint with notes or anything like that. Tests are hard so you have to work hard but if you like history then you'll like him.
Best professor I've had at MC for any class. His class has few assignments to grade (5 short essays, 1 map quiz, 1 final paper, and two tests) so you have to really work to make sure you pass. His lectures are engaging and sometimes funny, but he does not put up slides (aside from pictures and maps). Overall I would definitely recommend him.
If you want a professor that knows his stuff and can convey information appropriately, he's the one. Beware of very long historical readings from online and the textbooks.
He is a great Prof but his lecture was so so hard. You will not receive anything to review before the exam, he just says "Everything that we've covered" and our job is to remember. Please do not take this course.
If you love history and prefer lectures to textbooks then he is the prof for you. I took a number of his classes and his lectures are fantastic! Tests are based on the lectures so go to class. I never really read the textbook (except for the primary source book for the mini assignments). Take good lecture notes, study the terms and you'll pass.
if you just like listening and taking notes from the lectures then this is the class for you, if you don't like it history then it will definitely be a drag
Great Professor. One of those classes where you really have to take good notes on the lecture. Exams will be tough if you dont have good notes to study. Im not a history person but this class was very enjoyable to me.
Had to drop this class because this teacher was so hard to follow. Rambles on and on and makes history so boring. So disappointed, the subject should be interesting but is taught in such a disorganized and boring manor. Will never take again. Learned nothing. Found myself zoning out so often from his horrible and boring lectures. Youve been warned
Being that I have taken 10 years off school, and have recently been enrolled for the last two years, Professor Stumpf has made history amazing FOR ME. It was a real hands on experience, made me feel like I personally knew shi Huang tu, Constatine, and its as if I lived in Ancient Greece! Highly recommend his class! - Gele Hney
He literally just talks and talks the whole period. There is no text in his PowerPoint so you better take notes because you will need them for the test. He has a lot of knowledge but he can also get you confused since the topics arent organized in chronology. Btw theres no homework only a midterm, research P. And final. Hes a tough grader
Professor Stumpf's class was very lecture heavy I took his class accelerated and it was 3 hours long. He is great though! he is very passionate about history and isn't a tough grader. As long as you have a general idea of the class you will be okay. Make sure you take notes on what he says quizzes are based on his lectures and what he talks about!
Very nice and understanding. Wants to get to know every student. Super interesting and a great professor.
Such a nice person, easy to talk to, clear grader and always there to help the students. 10000% recommend taking his class.
