Great professor, while the class does require lots of work, it's reasonable.

Very good teacher
Great teacher, loves teaching and helps a lot.
He is a very good teacher. He makes sure you understand the material through much emphasis. And he's funny.
He is a great teacher...funny, helpful and always there for students.
Entertaining lectures, tests are straight forward

Dr. Topich is a great teacher, very smart. His tests are not too hard as long as you pay attention in class and study your notes. He loves to teach, so don't hesitate to ask questions.
hard because he moved too fast. but on occasion he was clear. he did offer to help clear up some odd test questions. tests are too short so too much room for error. not a bad professor at all.
Very nice teacher. One of the best I ever had. Very clear in class. I enjoyed his lectures and learned alot.
Great teacher wants to teach you the material
Great teacher. He explains everything VERY clearly and repeats important things over and over again. Tests are way too short but shouldn't be a problem. Tests are very fair, no tricks. Has some funny moments. No way you can go wrong.
Cake compared to most professors, funny, sometimes has a bad attitude, covers material that will be on the test, encourages you to think for yourself. Not a bad professor at all.

Don't be fooled by this man's humor. He does not care at all for his students, especially if they try to communicate with him. Be sure to stay away from this guy at all costs. Definitely a bad teacher.
goes fast...good sense of humour...has a very bad attitude at times...lots of room for error on his tests...don't take him if you have another choice..
smart, knows his stuff, and i learned a lot But... he has a horrible attitude towards students and uses intimidation frequently. i wouldn't advise seeking him outside of class, you'll get your head bit off, exception to this is when he's w/ his wife
He is good at explanation and his tests arent too bad. I'm not sure about his moods sometimes-perhaps not the best person to go to for extra help. Hes pretty funny tho.
i adore him! i don't find him intimidating in the least, but i'm an older student and can relate to adults better than younger students can. he's not mean or uncaring, he just won't take crap from any misbehaving children.
slept through classes, learned everything in recitation, very easy, funny guy, blows stuff up in class
I thought he is too difficult to be teaching a intro Chemistry class.
awesome teacher in class, very enthusiastic and keeps u awake, but lab tests are kinda hard. In class i have an A but in lab im riding between B and C.
His tests are hard, but if you study for them, then it's not a big deal. You just got to have a photographic memory and study both what you did right and wrong on the lab reports.
I really looked forward to this clas when I first started. After the way I was ineptly taught, however, I dreaded it. Too many thing he assumes you know with no explanation. Inside class, nice guy. Outside class = Real jerk! Loved the labs, lecture alright, exams rediculous in detail!
i think he explains everything so well in pre-lab that there should be no room for questions. his tests are very hard, but they're the same for any pre-lab, so i suggest take him in the early morning b/c he will keep u awake. study the math problems, most importantly, for the test.
he seems to know his stuff really well, and is always prepared to give his lectures.
An easy teacher, but a real jerk outside of the classroom. Don't count on him for help unless he is n't doing anything.
had him for both chez 101 and 102. good prelab lecture, but the tests are ridiculous. i can't get a good grade to save my life, no matter how much i study for it.
crazy hard.. goes over stuff in lecture.. but.. tests are ... TOO HARD
He's funny but he doesn't really help that much outside of class. Make sure u meet up with someone to do the calculations for lab cuz they can get u behind. Just study for the exams and it should be fine
all of you who complains about his test are who didn't try hard enough. sure, it's a little challenging, but cmon, you are now in college. dont expect someone to spoonfeed you the direct answer. dig up the book and meet up with friends to help each other out. one last word, HE's great!
Veeeery GooooooD Teacher
Very clear professor and the exams are relatively easy if youve done the lab reports.
really clear, really funny--he joked about mystery science theater in pre-lab lecture.
he's the kind of guy who's attitude is you do your job and i'll do mine, he does a good job alright, chops straight to the point and never lets you down
he's hard and the class is extremely boring. if you can, take chem 102 w/ another teacher.
you pretty much have no choice about having topich. a person i know ::cough cough:: once took a nose dive at his feet in front of 300 people trying to turn in a paper. he lights chemicals on fire sometimes and thats cool. bring your ipod for salvation
Very clear about what he wants, but know your****.
Don't sit in the front row unless wearing a rain coat... he tends to sweat A LOT!!! Awesome prof though and definitely loves to teach Chemistry!
I needed help on a recent assignment so I emailed him, and he was extremely rude to me, regardless of the fact that the online assignment was simply not working for me! I pretty much failed that lab report too-- it was about REALLY easy stuff (i.e. limiting reactants). Not very good at all, in my opinion.
if you do the reading, you will receive an A in this course, just know the material, he drops one of your 3 exams and substitutes the final exam grade as a replacement grade for one of those exams. All his tests are multiple choice, so there's no way you cannot get an A-all you have to do is do the reading and look over the assigned problems
Failed... got all A's on labs
HORRIBLE teacher, very inconsiderate..never willing to help you, extremely rude, can teach well but exam is way too complicated than the elementary problems he teaches in class. take any chem teacher but him and terner!
Dr. Topich treats his students in a very rude manner because (a) he has tenure and has published the solutions manual to the chemistry book VCU uses and (b) everyone in his chem lab lecture group has to take the class so he can do whatever and still get away with it. He is very audible in class and has a good sence of humor. Studying is a must.
Took his lab prior to the lecture and managed a B. Labs were so simple some times I felt stupid that I overthought the process. Come test time I never knew what he was talking about when it came to the application questions. Doesn't sugar coat, and always seems to act in the best interest of the student. I wouldn't want him for lecture.
Easy class, just do all the labs, you can drop 2 of them. Most people just get the old lab tests and study off those, and I never had to take the final! easy A
He's actually really rude, don't bother asking him for help.
When the entire class gets a 66% on average for the first test you would think something is wrong. He just thinks that we (all 200+ students) are stupid. The guy needs to open his eyes and see that he doesn't teach the materia. You might get a good grade, but you won't understand it! Plus he has another agenda (author of the Chem book's answer key)
Dr. Topich was a great teacher. But damn, this class was hard for being a 1 credit class. The labs were all really easy, but the exams were impossible to pass. I wish that I could tell you to stay away from him, but he is the only person teaching this class.
The only gripe I had was waking up at 8AM for pre-lab lecture, which you must attend for CPS. Other than that, labs were easy to do, as the reports. Don't see what the big fuss is about his exams, it's basically the lab calculations with different numbers. Didn't have to take the final, easy A!
THIs is BY FAR the worst guy ever, he yells the whole class, he is very demanding, very hard. i studied for this chem lab more than all the other labs. he takes a lot of points off. He takes points off if u didn't staple the paper and for junk like that. stay away from him, he's a jerk
He is a very rude person i heard both good and bad stuff about him but he yells at the whole class and takes points off for things that doenst matter. i only had him for lab and he doesnt teach how to do the measurements for a 101 class If you go to him during office hours for help, he might or might not help you, but for certain he will yell at u
The only thing tricky about the tests is that each question is worth around 5 points. Since there are only 17 questions, you can only miss one to still get an A. That said, however, the questions themselves are not too difficult. The labs are easy to figure out. The clicker questions can be tricky, but they only make up 5% of your grade, so wtv.
very hard class. Take lecture with lab if u can it will help. Lab reports r really easy (lon capa). tests are death on paper. I got A's in leacture and B's or C's on test:( go to class for clicker ques. Don't be intimidated to talk to him. He seems to have this thing w/ his office. Ask him when good time. for final study old tests. try to talk 2him
I don't know, i received As on all the labs, and I enjoyed doing them, but i could NOT pass his exams! I felt like they were extrememly difficult, and I will probably have to retake the lab next semester. And it sucks that there is only 17 questions per exam.
i was in lab and i thought it was easy but it might be bcuz i've taken 101 and 102 lecture...
Topich is a really good teacher, his test can be a bit tricky, but find someone with his old test, there usually very close! Really gets into the subject and walks all over the place, always ran over his time too.. but all in all hes a great guy!! and the labs were pretty fun
Topich was such a fun professor. He really loves teaching and makes the lectures interesting. The labs are not too hard and he gives all the information needed for the write ups and exams.
He was very enthusiastic! Labs were pretty easy, but the tests could be tricky. Pretty easy though.
Explains the material well even though tests are tricky at times. Class is easy overall, just study everything...or find someone who has the old exams because they are pretty similar! Got A's in both 101 and 102 labs
Labs are easy peasy except for one. Just follow directions and go to class for clicker questions. Takes 2 of 3 tests so do well on the first two and u dont have to take the last one.
Had Topich for Gen Chem 2 Pre-lab lecture. HILARIOUS GUY. He has a loud booming voice and keeps your attention. Drops lowest two lab grades and final is optional. Attendance is mandatory for CPS. Couldn't ask for a better lab teacher ever.
I thought that he was so annoying, because he talks while you are taking the exams. His exams are hard, but somehow I still got a B. The labs are very easy. He isn't that bad he's o.k.
He's funny and friendly in class but sometimes he's mean outside of the class. He's pretty clear though in his lectures and tells you what you need to know. Hint: Get his old tests if you can!
lab reports are easy, go to class, use clicker, tests are somewhat hard, get old tests and you'll be fine. he is funny and very clear.
Easy gen ed requirement lab. He goes over each lab before you actually do the lab so your good to go. You have to go to lab, so attendance is required but its once a week so thats good.
Boring. Class is easy though because he goes over everything about the lb in the prelab. I took it when the prelab was monday at 8 am so I never really went. Exams are easy, just study a little.
8am pre lab sucks, and its worse when he hacks loudly and expect you to do clicker questions in 2 seconds. actual lab was easy, but his exams are hard, the final though is very easy because he literally uses the same questions from the test.
Pre-lab lectures have CPS questions. Exams are easy if you do the lab reports. Labs are really easy and the lab reports don't take too much time. He drops your lowest exam grade and drops two of your lowest lab grades. I actually didn't mind his 8am pre-lab lectures!
I have yet to actually see or meet Mr. Topich because all pre-lab lectures are put up online, but I still enjoy this class. His prelab lectures are very helpful! Watch them! Lab Reports are easy. His exams aren't bad at all. The experiments are pretty cool so all around I would say this class is easy and fun!
Overall great professor, makes some great jokes during lectures and does experiments in front of everybody. His tests are somewhat hard and are mostly on just his lectures.
First of all, I got a B in this class but i think i should have gotten an A. He is a great teacher and explains Chem labs well, but for some reason his tests are hard, and he doesnt give back tests so there is little to no feedback in this class.
Never once met the professor. All lectures are online. He does not reply to emails, unless you repeatedly email him. Tests are never returned, so you don't know what you did wrong. Tests are difficult. Labs not bad at all if directions followed. Only problem with tests is that labs are not returned prior to tests, so can't be used as study guide.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. he does not give a s*** about teaching, he is REALLY rude. I went to him during office hours once to get a lab report back to study from and he told me he lost it and told me to get out. Rude to his students, loud, and very disrespectful
Labs were sometimes difficult due to unclear instructions. Exams were straight forward. Just study the lab reports, pre-labs, and know how to do all of the math and it will be an easy A. Overall pretty easy A as long as you do the work.
I didn't imagine I'd be the only one. He's extremely rude and offensive. He really couldn't care less if you're struggling with the subject. Not sure why he's teaching. Seems to be on a power trip. Tests were ridiculously difficult considering how easy the labs were.
It was a year ago when I had his pre-lab lecture, but I do remember him saying "um" and "uh" soo much kinda like he was nervous up there or something. His tests would have been hard if I didn't get copies of the old tests to study, so definitely find someone that has them! Other than that you shouldn't have a problem with this lecture or lab
I didnt much like the structure of the class. Seemed to bounce around from subject to subject. Exams were pretty easy as long as you listen to his ramblings. Everyone I've talked to has agreed, this class is a joke.
Class is really easy. Basic chemistry with environmental touch. Easy if you took IB Chem. Interesting demonstrations.
Topich treats you like you're in middle school again. Although he is very passionate about his teachings, his lectures can be painful to sit through. Tests aren't hard, but not a breeze either.
The rating isn't all that helpful, since you have him for Gen.Chem. lab no matter what, but it's worth mentioning that I actually like the online lab lectures. They give me the ability to learn when I have free time, and I don't have to get up early once a week. The exams are harder than they were in 101.
BAHAHAHA.. this class should be called "chem for re re's".. IT IS SO BORING.. that it actually turns out to be hard because you don't pay attention to anything in class. PS even though attendance is not mandatory, you have to go cause he asks clicker questions almost EVERY DAY so sign up with friends and take turns going!
he is very professional to the point that he doesn't care about one student. he never reply to emails unless he got asked by half of the class!! follow the pre-lecture videos and you will be just fine! he got about 1000 students so dont think that he has time for you!
He is possibly the WORST teacher I have ever had. None of his TA's speak English or are willing to help you out at all. Second, he will not help you out AT ALL with anything. His tests are ridiculous and he thinks he is too busy or too good to talk to you.
This is byfar the most BORING class I have ever experienced. It is not really hard, but you actually have to payattention during the lectures to get the info that will be on the test. This is a hard task to complete because he is SO boring and iwll randomly YELL to "catch our attention." Tests are hard because he choses what is most important to HI
Information was clearly posted regarding labs. Got stuck in traffic for last exam, came in 50 minutes past when the class started and he allowed me and others who commute to VCU to take the exam. Very nice of himself to understand the problems students faced regarding traffic problems.
Dr. Topich is horrible!!!! His lab exams are extremely unfair and he is extremely rude. He seems like he does not want his students to suceed at all. Do not take this class!
I've had Joseph Topich for two semesters now for Chez 101 and 102 labs and I can honestly say he has no respect and is an incredibly rude person to his students. I'm serious about my school work but some of his tests are ridiculously hard for a ONE credit lab.
Doesnt matter if u like him or not he's the only one teaching the course. Anyways EASY class. Don't be stupid and WATCH the pre-lab lectures before every lab and especially before EVERY EXAM! Everything u need to know for the exams is on the lecture so if u dont watch it you WILL BE SCREWED. Listen to me... watch the lectures u get an A if not F
I got an A in this class but Topich is insane. The labs are a piece of cake, but the exams are impossibly hard. Topich is a very smart man, but he fails to realize that the students in his 101 class need extra clarification and easier test Q's. He also seems to be annoyed when people ask questions. The lab is run by a TA so I never even saw the man
The labs are easy so long as you watch the lab lectures online. However, the exams are nearly impossible, especially since they only have twelve or so questions some of which build upon answers obtained earlier on the exam. Study for the exams by watching the videos and learning concepts as well as picky details. He tests on the most random things.
he has a million chez classes so T.A's teach his class. i was lucky and got a great ta but i heard some are really bad :/ labs are easy WATCH THE PRELAB LECTURES exams are impossible, so get 100s on the labs
So boring. Students left in hordes after clickers were done. You can't take notes from his slides, so you better be an auditory learner. Expects you to know how to practice chemistry without telling you how. Its only gen ed. Its so so so so boring. Quaint fellow though.
THIS CLASS SUCKED..well the lab. I did all the labs but the exams are impossible, and i ended up getting a C:( Although theres not way you could avoid him, because he has ALL CHEM LABS. word of advice: get old labs!
Okay, where do I start, his labs are relatively easy. However, EXAMS (especially the last) is extremely difficult. VCU should come up with a better system of testing for labs. Dr. Topich only gives 12questions on each exam, therefore, missing two questions will give you a low B. Nice professor, but very distant from students. My TA was good...
Fair professor.
Topich is a fun teacher. The class is really basic and easy and as long as you attend, take good notes and pay attention to lecture you should be able to pull off a good grade.
Not much point in even rating him, since VCU forces you to take him for CHEZ 101-102. In a lab class, he made lab reports worth 40% of your grade, but 30 multiple choice questions 60% of your grade. You never see the guy all year, complains to students in mass e-mails, was pretty rude, and is impossible to find. But he was fair, I guess. And easy.
Just get 100s on all your labs. Best 2 out of 3 lab exams is no good since they're only 12-14 questions so missing 2 means you've already got a low B and pay attention to details you wouldn't think mattered. Watch the pre-lab lectures. Don't expect to ever see him for any reason because he does not care who you are and what your problem is ever
Very distant from students and mostly consumed with research. Because VCU assigns most researchers a teaching obligation, Dr. Topich focuses very little time on preparing for class and spends a large portion of time on his research. TA's do most of the work. If you keep your head down and do the labs, there shouldn't be a problem pulling off an A.
You would probably never see the prof. face unless you took your tests in harris hall. His tests were fairly difficult. Usually knew what to expect on the test and he usually does not throw in trick questions. He is a distant teacher, but very helpful on a one to one basis. He usually ignores emails. Just do the labs and score well on 2 tests
This class is basically, you get what you put in. Try to get 100s on all the experiments, then you won't have to do the last two. In order to prepare for his test, just re-read the experiments and listen to his pre-lab lectures online. He drops the lowest test grade. Also, his TA teaches the class and you will never see him.
You will NOT meet this proffessor. Lab is 100% taught by the T.A. My advice is to hope you get one that speaks english unlike mine. And to take it at the same time you take Chem 101. Also, the pre lab lectures are online WATCH them. They tell you how to do all the labs. Tests aren't hard just prepare by doing what he outlines online. Good Luck!
Dr. Topich is a great chem lab prof (even though you prob won't see him). He is also very helpful! If you have a question, all you have to do is visit his office hours and he is willing help you with whatever you need!!! Exams are easy if you actually listen to his online lecture. Everything in this lab is clear and simple if you follow directions.
Only saw him on test days but my T.A Marissa was great! Class was fair: best 6 out of 8 labs and best 2 out of 3 test. Make sure you actually comprehend the labs (pre-lab and the questions) & study for the test because they will shock you! an A is definitely attainable.
Don't even know what the guy looks like. He doesn't like to respond to e-mails or make himself available. The tests are 15 questions and ask questions that have nothing to do with what you learned, just what you remember (color of things, name of something etc)the class isn't too bad, and my TA was pretty good.
People who say that the TA teaches everything are totally wrong! The TA's DO NOT teach, they are more of a watcher and makes sure that nothing wrong happens in lab. Rather, Dr. Topich teaches the lesson and lecture via the internet video. It's great because you learn at your convenience (just watch it before lab). Exams are exactly from lectures.
If you just listen to his lectures before each lab and study before his exams you should ace his lab class. He can't make his requirements any more clear. Although no one really sees him, a student does not have to have close relationship with the professor to do well in lab.
Topich posts all of the pre-lab lectures on Blackboard ahead of time so that you can take notes before the labs and the exams. Exams aren't the easiest, but if you study the lectures they're not bad. He even ended up curving a few grades at the end of the semester.
I love chemistry and this class made me absolutely hate it. His lectures are boring and I usually fall asleep every class. He doesn't make good powerpoints so you have to take notes based on what he is saying. His voice is soo annoying! He randomly yells all the time and is weird. Try not to take this class.
I hate chemistry but I find his powerpoints and lectures interesting. He talks in a way that is easy to understand and makes corny jokes.the powerpoints are formatted well and are easy to copy. I think he's really funny and he does fun demonstrations. He's very passionate about his subject and if you attend and pay attention getting an A is easy.
You will never see the instructor (except on days of the exams, which are not too difficult), and most of your time will be spent with the TA for the chem lab. His lab procedures are so precise that you would have to be an idiot to mess them up. Pre-lab lectures online are very helpful. Definitely take Dr. Topich's lab!
You will never see this man. Your labs will be instructed by your TA. Labs/reports are hit or miss. You do them independently but Topich has instructional videos about the lab and the write ups on BB. 3 exams- they're quite intricate and specific, so STUDY. goodluck !
Kind of pointless to review Topich, as you can't take anyone else for chem 101 lab. While the lab meetings are run by TAs, his online pre-lab lectures and printouts are extremely clear and detailed. I could always figure out the lab/lab reports based on these resources. His lab exams though are frustrating and redundant and overly detailed.
it was a little difficult but if you take notes you'll be fine. A lot of the notes have answers to the online quizzes and helps when studying exams. He had interesting experiments and it isn't that bad of a class.
theres alot of work in this class!! 4 papers, group activites, writing assignments where you have to have 10,count em 10 different recent refrences from the web!!! plus 4 regular test, no final. i hate this class already and its only the 2nd day of school. why do tchrs insist on giving group projects in class of 300+!!! theres xtra crdt too.
Dr. Topic knows his stuff. He's also very helpful in letting you look at the exam after it's been graded and will look at your notes too and give suggestions on how to improve them. Make sure you attend class, do all the assignments as they are required, and you should do well. Don't hesitate to see him during office hours to ask questions.
Easy A if you attend all of the lectures and take the exams. Labs are ok unless u have a horrible TA. I had really nice TA in 101, but not so much in 102. But it doesn't effect u r grade as for as you do the work on time. Take him!
Lots of information. GO to the lectures, the textbook won't help that much. doesn't post slides/notes online much, so take good notes.
Test are mostly based on the notes and a few questions out of the book. The assignments he gives out are really easy and does not require a lot of work.
It's not too bad. The assignments are really simple to do, and an easy A. The exams were okay, but he drops the lowest and averages out the grade... After a while lectures get boring, I know I started doodling, buy still pay attention and take notes bc it'll help for the exams (also doing the readings and the review questions help).
It wasn't too bad... the assignments are easy, but really study for exams (the good thing is that he drops the lowest exam grade). I will admit it can be a bit boring (I used to doodle during lectures), but pay attention bc a lot of material is on the exam. Doing the reading in the book and the review questions helps a bit for exams...
He's a great teacher he enjoys teaching as well. I never bought a book for this class nor was it needed and I got a B. As long as you attend all lectures you'll be just fine. It's important you go to the lectures because he doesn't post any of his slides. The assignments were straight forward and easy!
Very easy to get an A in his class. Topich's a really nice guy too. You can tell he's passionate about chemistry and his silly jokes made me enjoy the class more. However you should really attend the lectures because he doesn't post anything online. Would definitely recommend :)
You're never going to see this guy. Your TA is the one that conducts the lab and grades all of the reports. But he sends out weekly emails reminding you of assignments. He always posts documents prior to the lab that'll help you so much to understand it more. Very clear and straight to the point. Follow the directions and you're guaranteed an A!
He was a terrible professor. Managed to get a B but I really don't know how. He was not helpful. Constantly was clearing his throat and coughing into the microphone.
I don't know why some people don't like this guy; he is a great professor and he's funny too! He gets really into it and it's an easy class if you give full attention and attend class.
Professor Topich is great! The class is easy and interesting, he gives plenty of time for assignments and let's you know when it's critical that you attend class. However, the exams sometimes go into a lot of detail with certain questions, so studying is very important.
Mr. Topich is a great guy. He is funny and very enthusiastic. If you are looking to take a simple science class I would definitely recommend. The work load is not high but I would recommend attending the lectures to help you with the exam.
You will never meet Topich for Chem Lab 101. The lab reports are easy but if you mess up one tiny thing your grade plummets so be sure to triple check. Just be hopeful you get a TA that speaks English.
easy A if you go to class
I never went to class, except when he said to, and I even missed one assignment, and still managed to get a C. He drops your lowest test grade. If you don't go to class, you'll miss a few things he says that are tricks on his test, but not too much. He's a pretty nice guy too; he let me check my phone for an emergency during a test.
Personally, I hated this class. Although most of the info seemed easy to comprehend, my highest grade on his exam was a C. It was an extremely boring class, but do well on all the in-class stuff, homework, and do the extra credit, you will come out with a good grade. Like I said, my highest exam grade was a C and I came out of the class with a B.
I have him for Chem Lab and his Lab exams are ridiculously crazy!
An amazing teacher. This man loves Chemistry with his entire being and it shows. I have learned so much from him in just one semester, and although his class is not a breeze, he makes learning extremely fun! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!
If you want to take a class with a professor who shows how much he loves his job, take this class. He's funny, doesn't require you to buy the textbook, and he get's really into his lectures. It's easy to get a good grade if you pay attention and go to class (50 minutes long). Love this teacher and would recommend his class
Awesome professor who shows so much passion. All his tests & quizzes are lecture based which means if you want a good grade, you have to go to class & take notes. It's easy to get an A bc he drops the lowest test & quiz grade & provides extra credit of 5 points on your final grade! The info is boring but w/ his personality, he makes it enjoyable :)
He is awesome, funny, passionate, super nice! The information is boring.. but his class is easy if you take notes bc all his assignments/test/quizzes are based off of what he says in class. I got an A & so did many others who actually went to class & paid attention :)
I came into the class dreading it. Towards the end of the school year, I didn't want to leave! He is awesome & funny and I'm really gonna miss having him as a professor.
ADORE THIS MAN super silly and cool. Lectures are boring, but it's hard to make the subject exciting. Listen to his lectures and tests should be golden.
Least helpful professor ever. If you need help in Chemistry he is not the guy to go to. Emailed him to meet for office hours and he never got back to me. Lectures are boring so he tries to scream at you to get your attention.
He is a good teacher, however you have to be in class to pass. The info. he put in his lecture cannot be on the internet. He does do he best to make the class fun but its hard too. I really dont know why a lot of people dont like him, I love his class. There is a quiz every Monday but its only 5 questions and it was easy. Take him!
You will never see Professor Topich, so your lab section will be run by a TA. My lab was run by a grad student who is really nice and helpful! The class is really easy plus your lowest lab exam and two lowest lab reports are dropped! So really there is no reason not to get an A! And even if you have a bad partner like me you will be fine!
Class was what you would expect from a chem 101 lab, but the prof's approach feels punitive. From day 1 he starts with tricky grading and has several unstated expectations. All communication comes from the syllabus. In the rare event he responds to an e-mail, it is usually rude and short. You're fine if you take the class as if it is an ind. study.
I loved this class! Dr. Topich is an awesome professor. He loves this subject and it shows in his lectures. Going to class and paying attention is a must. He doesn't put much information on his slides so you have to listen to what he says. Tests and quizzes are super easy. Go to class, take good notes, study the notes for tests and an A is golden!
Professor Topich is such a sweet man. I was worried about this class before I got there but he made it super easy. There are four exams (no final) and he drops the lowest one. He also drops the two lowest quiz grades. There is barely any work for this class and got an A without even trying.
He is VERY good at explaining subjects that seem very foreign and would be confusing normally. He teaches will a powerpoint and a lot of helpful visuals.
In the chemistry lab class, he is never even there. If you ask him questions through e-mail he will answer the 5th time. He keeps grade reports but won't post them. You have no idea what grade you have in the class, unless you work it out yourself. I think he is lazy.
This class is really not hard and there is no reason why you should get an A or a B. If you get a grade lower then that, that's your fault not his. I don't know why people give him a low rating for chez lab 101. Its a lab class so it ran by a TA, not the professor. Just do the work and you should do fine.
Topich is a great teacher and his slides are very clear cut. He gets the point across and also has fun with it. A textbook isn't required and online assignments will bump up your grade.
I greatly enjoyed this class. It was a little tricky at first since I had never taken a lab before and was not used to using a lab notebook or doing summaries before class but I got the hang of it by the end. I had a great TA but I know other people who had ones that were much more difficult.
Just show up, listen to the lecture slides which isn't that hard and take some notes,Gives extra credit,No textbook,Also professor topich gives us scantrons so wedon't have to pay for ones ourselves.
If you don't get an A in Chez101, you're doing something wrong. The professors is never there. A TA runs the class, exams are online, and as long as you pick a good lab partner you'll do fine.
Topich is nice and passionate about chem. NO TEXTBOOK NO CLICKER weekly 5 point quizzes (super easy) And occasional tests The only downfall is that the content is bleh and he doesn't post notes, so you have to make sure you go to class in order to pass. Otherwise, easy class.
Teaching assistant runs the class. Everything explained is through syllabus so you don't meet him and Topich does the grading. just make sure you do your calculations right or you lose a ton of points. tests are just crazy intricate
I only took this class because I heard of how much of a joke it is. If you need an A take this class, but don't except Topich to help you with anything. He misgrades scantron tests so you have to make sure your grade on bb matches what you got in class. I've emailed him twice and no response either time. Easy class, bad professor.
Really nice guy! Has a good tone to keep you focused during lectures. Go to class and you will pass. Didn't have to study for quiz because they were so straight forward and from his lectures. NO TEXTBOOK! Easy way to fulfill a science requirement if you only need one and don't like science like me.
He is hilarious. One of my favorite professors!
This class was so annoying! You will need to memorize dates, numbers, etc. Still an easy A class but I was hoping for more Chemistry
Professor Topich was a really nice funny guy. I would honestly say his class is more for students who are not science majors and need the credit or who just don't like science and need something. All you need to do is show up and take notes and you'll do perfectly fine. I really enjoyed his class.
Don't skip classes because even though he posts his PP, it's often just pictures that he discusses during the lectures.
I just have to respond to people who are in Chez 101 and are complaining about this course. For one, professors are not supposed to be there, because it's an easy intro course and it would be a waste of their time, something a TA could handle. Emphasis on easy. Did I say it was easy? Because it is. Theres no reason to not get an A, at least a B.
Boring but easy class. If you hate science, like me, this class shouldn't be an issue. Just show up and take notes on his lectures (PP are only there for visuals). He gives list of topics that will be on the tests. Tests are super straightforward
The pace of the lab goes faster than the pace of Chem 101 so it is very frustrating doing the lab work because I have no idea what I am doing because I have not learned it in class yet
Dr. Topich was a wonderful professor. He made the class interesting with frequent jokes and his quirky personality. There are four exams that are completely based on lectures and other easy grades that don't take much work. The class is an easy A as long as you show up and listen.
Really fun class. Very straight forward; gives study guides before each of the four exams. Extra credit opportunity after final exam; really nice guy, definitely suggest you take this course! Show up and Pass type class; had an A the whole semester until I started skipping. So, simply just show up and it's hard to mess up! TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
Even though the class is run by the TA, Topich provides clear information on what is expected in the syllabus. Pretty easy experiments, and the write ups can all be done easily as well if you give yourself time to figure them out. Drops 1 lab exam and 2 lab grades.
The class is straightforward. In the experiment folders on Blackboard there are always lists of textbook pages that can help you complete the lab reports. The exams are based on the lab reports so it is to your benefit to do well on them because then you will know how to answer the exam questions accurately. It's a hard class to fail.
You won't meet him in person and you'll be lucky if he sends out a message/email to blackboard. Your TA is your actual life line in this class. Also make sure to choose a good lab partner who is going to be dependable because doing a lab by yourself is not fun in the slightest. Get ready for an irregular schedule! Most labs won't take all class!
Two lab tests alone are worth 55% of your grade, and 7/9 lab reports count for 45%. You can work hard all semester and do poorly on the tests and end up with a bad grade, BUT his tests and lab reports are easy. Take this class seriously because it can creep up on you at the end of the semester. Also he wasn't really accessible and did not help much
Dr. Topich is a great professor. His wife would often assist the class and they are so adorable. Dr. Topich has a great personality and is really funny and is truly passionate about what he's teaching. His tests can be hard at times, but as long as you study in advanced you should be fine. Tests are worth 70% of your final grade so be sure to study
Rather boring class, and his lectures tend to be everywhere. Will not let you make up a test for any reason, as I had court and he still wouldn't let me. Yells randomly throughout class and tends to not cover alot of material during class, very hard to pay attention. No textbook required
You won't actually see Prof. Topich since a TA will be overseeing your class. The lab reports aren't hard to BS an hour before class but, even if you do bad, Topich drops your two lowest labs and your lowest exam grade. The only way you don't get an A is if you don't listen to the TA feedback or you skipped multiple classes.
I really enjoyed him, but not the class. He was very funny and really cared about what he is teaching. The only hard thing are his quizzes and tests. His quizzes are between 5-8 questions so it's hard to get a A on them.
He is a great professor. Easy lectures and material. Quizzes can be hit or miss because they are usually only a few questions so it can make or break your quiz grade. As long as you attend class, you will do well.
This professor is a complete waste of time, he is very disrespectful and does not care about his lab students. Do NOT take him for lab I promise you that you will regret it. He incorrectly graded two of my assignments and overall makes one wonder how he ever got hired. You will never see him so be prepared to have an email communication.
I had Dr. Topich previously for CHEZ 101 last year during the Spring semester. Overall, he seems pretty strict when it comes to showing up for lab since you can't makeup any lab reports that you have missed. With the exams, it's not cumulative it based on the last expts you do, however, there's an option for taking the final exam.
TAs run the labs. The amount of work given out was decent, although a bit difficult at times. Topich drops your 2 lowest labs and lowest exam so that's a nice perk.
Tophat class. I found it similar to HS chem. He truly loves what he teaches and his excitement is very evident. However, it just didn't really interest me since there wasn't any interactive components to the course. There is a quiz drop (out of about 6) and test drop (out of 4). No final, no "real" midterm. Not a great class, but also not bad.
Professor Topich is a great man and a great professor. He really cares about his students and what he teaches. He makes class very interesting, he does lecture a lot but they are interesting to listen to. There is not much work involved in the class, a few tests and quizzes and tophat questions in class.
You'll never even see Dr. Topich and he doesn't grade anything but the online exams. 3 online exams combined worth 55%, lowest one gets dropped. They're pretty hard so take your time doing them. Need 11/12 to get an A on them. But just follow the directions for all the lab reports and those should be easy A's. Don't miss any labs!
Topich doesn't actually participate in chem labs, but he's the instructor and the TAs monitor the labs for him. As long as you follow the lab instructions and do what the lab report wants then you'll be fine. There are about 3 tests in total that are an overview of the labs that require you to perform basic calculations and show your knowledge.
He is very helpful and caring. He was not my lab TA but he is the lab instructor for the gen chem labs. Very accessible outside lab and is willing to help you out if you seek it.
Great and caring proffessor. He is passionate about the subject and is hilarious. His lectures are always what comes on the test and nothing extra. Highly recommend and he is an amazing and nice proffessor.
He's a pretty average professor. He tries to make a super boring class a little interesting and does an okay job at it. There are top hat questions every day that are used on the exams. He drops the lowest grade for your quiz and exam. He gives a study guide. There is no textbook. As long as you show up, you shouldn't have an issue.
He is a funny teacher and easy to learn from.
I loved him! He is such a cute human. He is always with his wife who has a special seat in the room. His lectures are so interesting and he truly loves his job. If you take notes in class about what he says and review it really quick before test/quizzes, you will easily get a B or A. Would definitely take a class with him again. Loved this class!
You can tell Professor Topich loves the topics he speaks about. He tries to make a boring lecture into one where it's fun. He is pretty funny and kind man. No homework besides the occasional journal and hot topic. Just show up and you are sure to pass with a B as the Tophat questions are used on the exam.
Professor Topich makes the class very interesting to those who are not interested in chemistry and his grading system is made so students pass/ have a good grade at the end of the semester if they do the online homework. (there isn't a lot of homework)
Get chegg for the Lab tests and labs.
Prof Topich seemed like a caring man. His classes were fun at times. There are 3 test and no final. Also 6-7 quizzes (7-10 questions each) they will not be difficult if you take notes. 10/10 would recommend.
He's a really good teacher & really passionate about what he teaches. The class itself is not that hard, but I would reccomend going to lectures because he goes over most of the material there. Overall, just memorize the stuff on the list on the study guide, and you'll get an A. Also, all quiz questions are on the test, so look through those.
This class is all the TA but Topich is clear on what he expects. The labs are really easy, they should be easy As, and 2 get dropped as well which is nice. The tests are pretty easy too, just look through your labs while doing them, they are only 12 questions so you need at least a 10/12 to get an A. Pretty easy class, just do the work!
Both chem labs are so annoying because it's ran by one professor. Most times instructions are not clear so you have to walk yourself through everything once you get to lab. How well you do honestly depends on your TA and the people you know. Late work is not accepted so go to lab every week. Easy A if you stay on top of it and ask friends for help.
Chem lab sucks but its required for a lot of majors. Joseph is just the head of the labs, so you won't actually work with him at all. However, he is not good at responding to emails with questions, and is not forgiving with grades whatsoever. Hope you get a good TA
Dr. Topich is so kind and sweet. His lectures are great but you need to attend them to actually understand the material, and for TopHat. The tests are pretty straight forward and straight from the lecture, overall great person, attend class and you should definitely be able to earn an A!
Drags on about nonsense
Hes not very communicative in what he wants for the assignment and we still dont understand after we ask him for help. hes strict about getting help from classmates but doesnt really explain the requirements or help on how to do the problems
People say professor Topich is too cut and dry but I liked that about him. His instructions and emails for the labs are short and to-the-point. The labs are easy and short as well. There are only 3 exams in the entire course and the lowest exam grade gets dropped which is a plus. Although the professor is very hands-off, the class is hard to fail.
Don't take this class if you actually want to learn. He talks a bit slow but your grade consists of a few tests, multiple choice homework assignments, and this thing called "hot topic" which you basically write a paragraph on an article. They are all super easy, I didn't really take notes and ended with an A. (I suck at chemistry but this was easy)
It's a reasonably easy class, do the assigments and follow instruction and you will be a ok. The teacher's style is straight forward and a bit dry but if that works for you then definitely go for it. I'm not the best at chem so finding a study group was beneficial to me to help study with o when it came time to do assignments it went smoothly.
Easy A. Very straightforward just watch videos and complete online experiments.
Dr. Topich's lecture videos were boring and didn't really teach anything. He doesn't allow collaboration with classmates, even study groups outside of class, and is unapproachable and very short with students, which makes it hard to ask questions. The material is fairly easy, but if there's something you don't get, don't count on getting help.
You do a lab every week but everything is super straight-forward. The work is something that can get done the day it is posted and is manageable throughout the semester. He also drops your two lowest lab grades & the lowest exam grade. All programs used in class are also free.
Listen, this is the easiest chem lab. The labs are extremely straightforward. He drops 2 labs and 1 lab exam so if you do well on the first 7 experiments and 2 exams, youre done. The exam questions are pretty much copied from the labs so do the lab and youll do well on the exam. If you want an easy A, this is the way to go.
This class was very organized from the start and it was known each week when things were do because of how repetitive it was. I had the lab class of his and the two lowest labs and lowest exam was dropped- what more could I have asked for? It was great!
I took chem110 online and there were no office hours or anything, it was just lectures and the multiple choice quizzes were mostly questions that I felt were shallow and didn't really demonstrate what I learned. The tests were actually just copy and pasted questions from the quizzes. Sometimes we had to find "chemistry news" though and I liked that
If you want to actually learn? No. If you're taking the class for credit? Yes. His entire class was a series of online experiments. But if you need help? "Do not ask any other students for help and do not give help to any other students."
If I could give him a zero I would have. Did not teach his class WHATSOEVER. His TAs did all the work. Doesnt respond to emails quickly and has an attitude when responding. Class is fairly easy but hes not a good professor.
Very clear and simple class. Long, boring lectures, but it's chemistry so :/. The assignments are clearly outlined and simple. Very easy credit, even asynchronously.
I had him asynchronous and it was the easiest class. He communicates due dates and when lectures get posted very well. Only 1/2 assignments a week and everything was straight from the lecture. No textbook is needed and all quizzes are open notes!!
I have an A in lab and a C in chem so I think he was pretty great. Hes pretty organized and we only had one assignment a week. His tests are open note and he uses questions from the labs he gives us. Highly recommend! Im taking him again next semester for chem 102
I took this class fully online and we had no meeting times. Most of his labs were very easy and good to understand if your chem lecture kept up with the labs. The last labs got hard but all the others were easy. The test did take some time and got harder but still manageable if you carve out time to do it.
As far as online labs go, this one was pretty good for the sheer fact that the labs took 30min and were totally online and impersonal. He drops a bunch of labs at the end of the semester and there's only three tests. It was pretty alright.
Depends on TA you have, I had Danyang Wang and she was quite helpful with running lab. Labs are super easy if you prepare beforehand with simply reading the directions and watching any videos Topich uploads to the Canvas module. Grades are attendance + correct calculations. Tests are through LONCAPA based on experimental concepts, not bad at all
Class is good, the labs can be somewhat hard, but overall pretty easy.
Sends out a bunch of reminders when to take exams and drops the lowest exam and lab grade. Not a bad class, but my TA was tough on grading
Very lecture-based and missing class is detrimental unless you have someone to give you notes, but the lectures are pretty entertaining and there is hardly any work outside class. Really funny and sweet guy, too.
Dr. Topich is a very old school professor but there was very few homework assignments that are very easy. The lectures are very straight forward and were mostly interesting. Tests were multiple choice and scantrons, if you pay attention in class and take notes the tests are very easy.
Never met Dr. Topich, but he drops a lot of assignments and gives tests online. If you don't show up to lab, it's an automatic zero.
Professor Topich was excellent at teaching a course with some hard-to-understand material. The tests and quizzes were helpful and really only tested our understanding of core concepts-which is good! His aversion to Canvas is hard to work with sometimes but the assignments and grades are posted on Canvas so you could calculate your grade yourself.
Dr. Topich is such a cute old man who really loves his chemistry! The one thing about his class that is important is attendance. His class is very lecture based and without lecture you can get behind fast. He makes concepts very easy and his tests are quite straightforward if you study for 30 minutes. There is barely any work outside of class too.
Chem 101 labs are taught by TA's but run by professor Topich. the labs are easy as long as you read through them and exams are based on the labs. the labs correlate with the topics taught in Chem 101
