EXCELLENT! He really cares about his students understanding the material. He'll explain things a million different ways just to help you understand if you ask him. Truly a great teacher!
The finance class was alot of hard work but, he helped me go from a F on my first test to ending up with a B in the course. He takes the time to work with you and really cares!!!
Awesome professor. Took the time to work with students, and went above and beyond, to not only ensure they knew the material, but to help them get on the right path finding a job after school. The best prof at ISU, no doubt about it.
Horrible class. He is extremely boring and not informative at all. The class isnt that tough, but after sleeping through the horrid lectures, its really hard to do well on exams.
Very funny and helpful
Very good sense of humor..at least he tries to make class fun and he really wants you to do well
He is a big dork...some of his jokes are funny but some of them are just so stupid
Very hard class but he was a great teacher to have. For each test he has at least one study session which he teaches, and for the final he is having two. He teaches to the test and takes as much time with you as you need. He is a great professor even though he tells lame jokes. Good Guy!
I struggled in this class. I wish he would actually work out problems in class. I totally bombed my second test but thanks to his study session I learned everything in 2.5 hours at the last study session. GO TO THEM!
A hard class, but he helps you whenever you need it. Be prepared for him to know all about/make fun of your hometown. He will chat you up forever in office hours. The problems and tests are challenging, but manageable. I wished he would work problems instead of just talking about them, though.
Good teacher. Hard. He really wants you to understand the material. The main problem is that he just talks about the homework and doesn't go over it. But he gives you Gigantic step by step how to's on each problem (if you want to print them off the website).
Be ready to teach yourself the material with the print-off notes, because he flies through the material so fast you will have no other choice. He knows his stuff, just doesn't do much for step by steps in class. Reminds me of a combination of Matt Foley (chris farley) and Jim Belushi.
Basically, if you go to class and print off the notes and do the problems before the test you'll be fine. The material itself is a lil difficult but he is always there to help if you need it. You DONT need to buy the book, if you must, share with a friend.
Go to the review sessions, see him in his office if you have questions, and do the problems. He is the nicest prof and will help you out in any way he can. I do think his lectures are extremely boring. Tests are killer but are doable.
Nice enough guy. Not an easy subject to teach to many students who don't want to be there. I thought it was tough back in the early 90s but he had review sessions back then and it did help. It looks like not much has changed.
I wish he would work more problems in class, instead of just at the review sessions. Not living on campus, I couldn't make a couple of the review sessions and did badly on those tests. I did better on the sessions I did make, but not much better. You have to do the problems he posts on-line, and basically teach yourself, or you'll never pass.
What a stud... He cant teach really though.. he doesnt really teach the material that well becuase he is really boring.. he talks about himself too much.. good luck...
Oh jesus, I now adays record his voice just because it knocks me out at night. He is an extremely boring teacher and his jokes don't help. He might mean good, but I can't seem to learn from this guy. The handouts he gives us are nice, but his view that "everyone cheats" is really annoying since he watchs u like a hound. Hes tries, but oh god!
It's a tough class, but he really puts the second effort in to teach you. Granted, i fell asleep everyday, but the notes he provides online are as priceless as having a study guide done for you. As far as FIL 240 goes, if you want someone who will provide all the info to you at the comfort of your own computer, this is the guy.
He is a very nice guy always willing to help... however, he takes attendace EVERYDAY and if it wasn't for that I wouldn't go to class... it is so hard to stay awake and VERY Hard to follow him in class. His outlines are VERY detailed and are pretty much what the exams are like... but if you take this class be prepared to teach yourself the material

He's a bad finance teacher, his notes are like his own textbook which instead of doing problems he just talks about them during class. Skip class, take a nap, or study for another class during his lectures. If you do the homework and know how to do it you will do good on the tests. he also lets us do spreadsheets for extra credit.
He's a very nice guy and tries hard, but his class is just so boring. On any given day there are at least 4 people in a row sleeping. Do the problems early and read his lecture notes and you will do fine on the tests. And try to show up to class, even though it is hard to pay attention, if you show up you can get some info.
The way he presents the material is in the WORST possible way. All you look at for 75 min. is 12 font print that you cant even read because he doesnt dim the lights!! It's nearly impossible to pay attention during class no matter how hard you try 2. It wouldnt be so hard if he would just change the way he lectures... but I doubt that happens..
Super enhusiastic. Enjoys teaching and is very helpful. He jokes can actually be pretty funny at times. Course material is very hard, but just keep up and ask him for help if you need it. Ask him how his class is like the sex talk show.
He is a rally nice guy. Jokes are funny, especially the ice cream joke. he is always available for outside of class help. You also get candy if you miss only 1 class the whole semester.
Trefzger knows every town in Illinois! He's always in a good mood and will tell you a story with the material. Tests are easy if you know the formulas. Not a bad class if you can stand his jokes.
This man is the rudest person I've ever met. He's completely insane about cheating. He treated me like dirt. Do NOT take his class. You'll be very sorry. He's a huge dork.
Joey T is a great teacher. No matter, who teaches this class, it is a difficult subject to teach. He explains the material really well. Work out the problems several times in advance to get a good understanding of the material. If you are lost with something then go to him for help. He is one of the most helpful teaches I have ever had.
you'll see people sleeping in every row.
No no no no no no no no.
Awful, horrible, boring, ridiculous, disgusting, nerdy, greasy, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. NO. Don't do it. You'll be sorry.
he was boreing
The class was fun, thanks to Mr. Trefzger. He was interactive, very personal and educating. The class was never boring and I will to give 70% of the credit to him for the success of the class. (at least the lecture part)
i didnt like his style. nice enough guy but boring. nap time
Very nice guy. always wants to help you out. Curves everything like crazy. My F test grades ended up being low B's. Test are very hard and he makes you memorized all the formulas. He is funny cuz he gets so excited about the class but everyone is sleeping. He also takes attendence every class
his way of teaching is just reading word for word what is on the paper you print out anyways. doesn't work any problems but just shows the worked problems on the overhead that you have on paper. takes attendance. not very good but its FIL240 there isn't really anybody better to take.
Pretty challenging course. He is very helpful but I wasn't a big fan of his teaching style. Tests are hard but he does curve. He will tell you to buy the book, but don't bother! I never used it! There really isn't anyone better to take so he's not all that bad.
Not too hard if you keep up with the problems
Best teacher I have ever had. Very encouraging and cares about the student. Definatly go to each class, it will pay off in the end. He will give you more help if you make the effort to go to each class session.
Super nice guy, good teacher. FIL is not a subject to lecture in front of 200+ students, Joey T does his best. If you do the recomended problems you will do fine in the class. Do Not buy the text book, I never took mine out of the shrink wrap and I received an A in the class. All homework you print off his website. Great guy and loves teaching.
Attendance isn't mandatory, but attend, or he will hate you. He threw a fit swore and what not when i went to his office for help after i failed to attend class a couple of times. Will help out with anything if u attend, book is useless, class isnt easy but graded on a curve.

This class isn't that difficult. You don't need the book for this class. He's a great teacher and will help you any time. You have to study for the test and it's not that hard to get an A in the class.
Doesn't require attendance but is psycho if you miss class. Thinks everyone is a cheater. BORING. Everyone falls asleep during class. Condescending if you are absent. Would not recommend.
He is by far the best teacher that I have had at ISU. It's shocking to me that ISU has been able to hang on to a professor of his caliber for so long. I would recommend his class to anyone!!!
good guy- but class is so boring, the material is painful to even look at and his tests are friggin' hard and filled with tricks....i just hope i get above a D so i can move on and never look at finance ever again
He was an excellent teacher. The class is hard but not his fault. Its just tough material. I'd still highly recommend him. He genuinely cares about his students and getting to know them (and where they're from) He's always available to help!
Makes stupid jokes so tries to be funny. sometimes he confused me more, really hard to pay attention in class. No book needed to the problems and know them for the tests and you'll do fine. curves depending on how the class does. Overall i recomend
Tries to be funny but IS NOT!!! Talks too fast & his style of teaching is very confusing!!! Would not recommend taking him as a professor!!!!!
JOEY T is the man. His class is not an easy A but if you work at it will pass with ease. Keeps class interesting by making dorky joke which are funny. Wish he taught more classes so i could take him again. One of the best teachers I have had at ISU.
Tref is a great professor! He really does care about you, your grade, and what you can/will do with your education. Do the problems! They are your key to a good grade. He is gifted enough where he does not need the aid of a book, but teaches all of the material himself. All of the problems in HW and tests are his as well. Take this class with Tref!
Trefzger is SUCH an amazing teacher! Class is a little boring, but he tries to keep every1 awake. If something isnt understood, he will spend hours with you trying to figure it out. His tests are sort of hard, but he has review sessions that help A TON - so go to them! Just do the example problems & dont fall behind and you should be fine!
Great teacher! He loves finance and tries to make it interesting. Do not buy the book. Print the notes off his website. The class seems hard at first, but he grades easy. If you get lost, ask for help early.
I had to miss a lot of classes because of medical issues and he was very understanding and supportive. He really knows his stuff. All the notes, supplement materials, and homework problems are his own work!!! Don't bother buying the book. Easy to understand just by reading notes if you are good with math. Nicest teacher EVER!!!
He is the coolest teacher ever. He keeps class interesting by providing real life examples and even throws in some jokes to keep the class awake. Finanacing is a hard subject to learn, but I believe Trefzger knows his stuff! I would definitely recommend taking him- he's great!
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. He's a nice guy but can't teach for the life of him. He wrote all his notes & problems, which you have to print yourself & waste all your paper. All he does is read them word for word on the overhead too fast. Doesn't work examples out & doesn't explain things. Tries to trick you on the tests. Do not take!!!
The people who like this class and like this teacher have to be finance nerds who eat, sleep and breathe this stuff. Take Smalls, she may be very strict but you will actually learn stuff in her class and have a chance at passing rather than this guy who laughs when he tells us he likes to try and trick us on the tests and not to fall into his traps
Very cool guy... but his tests are impossible. He has 2 tests during the year and one final. And your grade is based on just 3 tests. If you do bad on a test it's hard to get it back up. Heard he was the best for this course though.. better than Small. Everyone sleeps in his class % he takes attendance. This class is alot of studying for an A
TAKE TREFZGER!... He is honestly one of the best teachers that I have ever had! He provides really good analogies for relating the material so you can actually understand it. He goes out of his way to try to help you do well in his class. He warns about what will be on the tests, so if you fail it's YOUR fault. "INVEST" in Trefzger!! GREAT TEACHER!
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this teacher! Watching paint dry would be more interesting than listening to him. Tests are nearly impossible, the class average on the last one was a 56! Doesn't give partial credit, class is only based on 3 scantron tests, the last one was only 18 questions and worth 96 pts.! Horrible horrible teacher!
Lectures can be boring but he does do a great job of teaching the material. It is always nice to have a teacher that loves to teach and help you if you need it.
He loves finance and knows his stuff, but when it comes to teaching his methods just suck. Reading off overheads and not even working out examples with the class is no way to teach. If you like to teach yourself take him, but if you want a teacher who will help you better learn it don't take him! And his tests are ridiculous!
If you want to torture yourself then this is the guy for you! Worst class to sit through ever! Bad teacher, bad class, bad tests!
A good professor in my opinion. His lectures may be dry, but he does a good job of making the material understandable via somewhat narrative-based problem progressions. He tells bad jokes but I found them entertaining (not funny). Also complains a lot about his rating on this site, esp. never getting a chili pepper. Now you got one, JoeyT!
I don't know how this man can still be teaching... because he doesn't teach! Forcing students to come to hi torterous class to sit there and listen to him read notes word for word, the same ones he provides online for us, the whole time is not teaching! Don't even get me started on the tests, only 18 questions and no partial credit, what BS!
Great teacher! It's hard material and takes time but you walk away learning a lot. Take his honors class. Has great teaching methods and explains things well. Always there outside of class and is very understanding and will work with you.
Great teacher! Exams are tough, but if you do all the assigned problems you can do pretty good on them. No homework! Does want you at class all the time but is not necessary. Being there though does help a lot in understanding the material. (This is for you tref, lol) He is boring at times but its worth the time.
Joey T has been one of my favorite teachers at ISU. Yes, i agree the material is boring, and yes, i never paid attention at all in class, but as long as you do the problems he tells you to look at via his notes, there is no way you should get lower than a B in this class, the tests are exactly like his notes, the numb. in the problems are just diff
great teacher. Always willing to help a student who shows up to classes. The review sessions help a lot for understanding but don't expect to get in if you don't show up to class. Go over the problem sets and you will be fine. Ask questions if you need to in class.. he is always willing to answer them
He's a great teacher. Pretty funny too. Has all of his notes online - which is really helpful. He also gives a ton of problems that you can look over to help you study.
He is the man. Always willing to help a student.
Tref knows his stuff! He is a good teacher but FIL240 in general is just a hard class. His notes are extremely long. I wasn't ever able to print them out and bring to class - which would have helped with note taking. He is a good professor and always willing to help. He knows what he is talking about and has some good explanations and examples.
A really nice guy, tries to be funny and occasionally he actually is. Its tough material though, you have to study. Overall I would take him again. The review sessions helped a lot, shows he really cares about his students.
Joe is great. I reccomend him if you want to learn about what goes on outside of school.
Fantastic Teacher. Extremely Generous. Dont listen to the negs, they are the stupids who come **** to class. Tref will bend over backwards to help if you show even the slightest interest in the class. Never used text. If U fail UR Stu!!PID (:P):::
Ehh he was alright. All he does is read his notes in class-not very productive. He does help you if you need it but his exams are almost pure problems and he doesnt DO problems in class.. all he does is read a problem and read the answer, which isnt very helpful. Good teacher but you basically teach yourself the material.
Very nice guy. Always willing to help. Can get boring sometimes but very educational class. Be careful if you take this over the summer, it is a very fast-paced class. You don't need a textbook, but you MUST do the problems he gives you for practice, that is the only way to survive the exams. I would recommend taking him for this class.
One of the best teachers at Illinois State!! Very helpful and insightful. WANTS YOU TO DO WELL!! I would take Trefzger over and over again! AWESOME PROFESSOR!
I would say the number one indicator for success in this class is attendance. The first test I fared well with an A, and as my attendance dropped, my grades did as well. If you don't go to class, at least make sure you have someone who does go so you can know what to expect on the test. I winded up with a C because I never knew the test questions.
As a finance major I was very interested in the content of this class. Treffy covered a lot of material for each test, but as long as you practiced on the homework problems they were pretty straightforward. I would take a class with him anyday, he is by far my favorite prof thus far.
Great teacher. Two things that make this class easier; being an accounting major (there's lots of present value and bond material in the course) and being great at math. If you are both of these things, you can LITERALLY study a day or two for each of the 3 tests without going to class at all and get an A. I even got a perfect on the final exam.
Tests are super hard. Hardest class i've ever taken. Very Enthusiastic however! He wiLL try to convert you to be a finance major! Other instructor is 100% easier and if your looking for an instructor do NOT choose this one. Classes are 300+ students multiple choice tests are not hand graded and there is no partial credit. NO Extra credit given
"WALL OF TEXT" crits you for 10 billion damage!! You die instantly from insane boredom. This pretty much describes his teaching style. "Wall of text" meaning he has like a 100-200 page microsoft word document he expects you to memorize for each chapter. God this class was horrible...
Class is not meant to be a blast, and finance isn't always interesting so don't listen the to people complaining about him boring. However, he DOES know what he is talking about and is willing to help. If you can't follow along with him in class he provides all his notes and a wealth of practice problems online. His jokes are awesome.
"WORK THE PROBLEMS" This is the best advice I can give anyone. If you can complete and understand the practice problems he gives without looking at your notes you should do well on his exams. Try not to get behind on the material and go to class, even if it does start to become boring or confusing.
This class is straight up difficult. However, tests always have a fairly significant curve. If you show up to class he will give you the benefit of the doubt when grades come around. If you know the problems you can do very well. No textbook. Really nice guy who is corky and funny. If you are ready to be challenged than this is the guy for you.
WARNING HE HAS A PSYCHO TA! The TA will follow u around and give a psycho stare at u durring class and writing notes about you. Then he will stand like right over your shoulder watching you and wont move. Makes you so uncomfortable and almost impossible to pay attention to the teacher. The class is very hard but the TA made it way worse.
A lot of students criticize his extensive notes. I found them extremely useful. A lot of it is him working through problems step by step. Dr Trefzger explains the concepts of finance very well. On a side note: those who have perfect attendance at the end of the semester get a box of candy. Those who laugh at his jokes get a really big box.
Dr. Trefzger is really nice, willing to help, and very informative...he didn't use the textbook but notes instead and his own problems. It definitely HELPS (Grade depends on it) if you do the problems.
There are a lot of misconceptions about Dr. Trefzger written on on this page. While the material may be dull he actually brings some excitement to it. And take his advice when he says to do the problems BEFORE class and come into his office hours. No textbook. Attendance isn't mandatory but recommended. Great guy.
Great guy. He has a different sense of humor, but it's still good. Read the notes, and do the problems for an A in the class. Go to class too, if you are borderline, and you've gone to class...he will bump you!
Class is brutally boring and he will call you out if you don't go. I still didn't go && just worked the problems repeatedly && got an A in the class. Test 1 is easy, 2 is pretty tough, but overall just work the problems over & over again and you'll do fine!
I took this class twice and it was just as hard the second time. He tends to do problems several different ways during class and although many find this helpful it just confused me when tring to do homework problems. YOU MUST DO HW!! Study your butt off for the test and come to all classes even though its not mandatory
Borringgggg class. Bla bla bla stare at my microsoft word documents for 1 hour 20 minutes each day cuz he holds you late almost every day. If it wasnt for his curve on the tests most people would have gotten D's or F's.
Dont buy the book. Really nice guy, go to class no matter what. Tests consist of mostly computational problems (do the problems) and several logic problems that he gives away in class whenever attendence is low. All you have to do for an A is go to every class and do the problems. Im banking on getting him to write a recommendation for a job for me
Class material is hard for most, but all the tests consist of are the recommended problems. I only went over those before tests and got an A. Go to class because he will let u know exactly whts on the test and if your border line at the end of the semester he will give you the grade if you only missed a few classes. DONT BUY TEXT. PATEL SCARES ME.
This guy is the man. He's been teaching this class for years. The material is slightly difficult, but just work the problems before tests. Don't buy the text book.
Tough class overall, but Trefzger made it pretty reasonable. He was excellent at explaining difficult concepts. Don't buy the textbook. For the love of Christ go to class. Do the problems, take decent notes, and put forth some level of effort, and a B is very attainable. Overall would certainly recommend
Honor section. Extremely helpful professor. Attendance not mandatory but if you go to class, easy B definitely. Do NOT buy the textbook. Look at the problem and solution prepared by himself. Perfect score possible. And you learn materials that you will remember after the semester.
I dont know what any of these people are talking about. His tests are impossible and everyone does horribly. Yeah he curves the tests so if you get a 60 it's a B but all of the other classes get notecards/notes for the tests and get to use normal calculators. if you're not good at accounting/calc DONT TAKE HIM
Trefzger is the man. He will do all he can to help you succeed. I had a lot of troubles with the material but he helped a lot in office hours and I managed to get an A. Don't buy the book, but make sure to work all the recommended problems and read the outlines on his website. Go to class every day and keep up with the material and you'll pass.
Don't buy the textbook, you will never use it. Tests are very difficult, but I think that mainly has to do with the subject matter. I never missed a class and only studied about 6-10 hours the day before each exam and I managed to get a B in the class. I feel like if I had actually done all the recommended problems, I could have gotten an A.
Wonderful and entertaining professor. Smart as hell, has a PhD from U of Illinois. Tests are tough, average on Exam 1 was 63. Is more than willing to meet you at any time and help you out.
He teaches this class as if everyone is a finance major and has great prior knowledge of the material. Other teachers allow notecards/graphing calcs. Tests take twice as long to do with scientific calcs- Not to mention they're impossible. He has to curve or 90% would fail.
Tests are crazy hard but the curve saves you. He will help you whenever you need it. Going to class gets you into review but class is like death he talks and talks all the way up to the last second. Hes a good guy though
Don't take unless you are or a Finance major. Extremely unfair class for those who will have little use for material. Teaches everything yet tests over very little. tests are only 20-24 questions each worth upwards of 5 points, no partial credit is awarded. The fact that he needs a steep curve to keep a decent amount of passing(c)grades is absurd.
Tough material but if you attend class everyday you will know what to study. He always tells you what problems to study for and has a great website with practice problems and the solutions to them. If you do the problems he recommends you will get a B easily because his curve is huge.
I took Trefzger for the Honors section. While exams can be tough, you won't learn more from any other professor. He has a real passion for his work, enough that he was willing to type and post all the class' notes online.
This class is really hard. I am taking him for the FIL 240 Honors section, however he always asks if anyone needs additional help, he checks up on you all the time to make sure you are keeping up, and he works with your schedule to be at his office when you are available. MAKE SURE YOU DO THE PRACTICE PROBLEMS and memorize formulas and your golden!
I'm not going to lie, his class is hard, his tests are hard. However, he gives you all the tools to be prepared. Doing well takes a lot of time and practice outside of class. The bottom line is: How much are you willing to put into the class? If your a Finance major take him, what he teaches will help you later on, if not take another section.
The class is difficult and the material isn't the most fun to learn but Trefzger is more than willing to help. He is constantly asking if everyone understands and highly suggests students email him or visit during office hours. The tests are tough but he curves them.
This class is a son of a b,but what fa-nance class isnt? Tests are very hard. Go to class and practice all the problems he tells you multiple times. Trefzger the man, the legend.
Prof. Trefzger is a great guy and one of my favorite professors I've had so far. The material can be very difficult especially if you have no experience with it. He will tell you many times to do the practice problems. Take that advice! The problems on the test are very similar. Be sure to attend class because if you miss one you will get lost.
This class is not easy by any means. I worked extremely hard and never missed a class and pulled off a C. Do all of the practice problems multiple times because the tests are somewhat similar to those. Utilize Tref's office hours as well, he will do everything he can to help you pass the class.
Great teacher. Do all practice problems he says. He drops hints in class so go. DONT buy the book. you wont open it once. Honors tests are problems with no multiple choice and there's a pretty tough final paper in the end
The class itself is VERY challenging. ALWAYS go to the review sessions, he will do example problems that are practically the problems on the test! In order to go to the sessions, you have to come to class. It's a pretty dry lecture but he really tries to make it fun. Do not buy the textbook, you'll never use it. Do the homework, it helps.
Lecture completely pointless and impossible to understand.
Professor Trefzger is one of the best teacher's I've had the privilege of interacting with at ISU. His class is straight-forward, test questions nearly given word for word in lectures and homework. This class isn't extremely challenging but can prove tough for the common sense majors/thinkers in marketing and management.
Not sure how I feel about professor Trefzger. He breaks down the material so it is easy to understand, but he also gives so many examples that you begin to feel lost. There are 3 tests worth 96% of the total grade. The other 4% are easy homework Excel exercises. Tough class, so be prepared to study hard.
Trefzger is the man. If your someone who hates learning conceptual stuff, this class is for you. Tests are basically all problems and he gives you word for word examples in the review sessions. Need to go to class to get into the review sessions though. Class has a huge curve (50% was a C) If you study hard you don't even need it. I got an A
The course is difficult but Prof. Trefzger does all that he can to make it interesting and fun. Attend all of the classes and go to the review sessions. I recieved a 44 on my first exam and an 'A' on my second due adopting this. I only wish that we could use a formula sheet on the exam.
Great professor all around. More than willing to help and spend as much time with students as necessary. A large curve for the overall class. If you can't get at least a B in this class, you did not try.
Trefzger is by far the best teacher for both FIL 240 and 360. If you have any desire to learn finance taking Trefzger is a must, seriously. Funny, intelligent, and curves exams big time, yet with that being said his tests are tough. Just study the practice problems and it isn't too bad. By far the best, TAKE HIM.
TAKE HIM! The entire class is on a generous curve, no homework just two excel assignments. He is willing to talk to you and help you.
Take this class with him! He types all the notes out and are extremely easy to read. Attend class and go to the review sessions! He genuinely cares about ALL of his students. When a natural disaster hit area my hometown he personally emailed everyone from the surrounding area offering his help with the material and excused them from class
Tref is the man. Took his honors class this semester and he has been one of the most helpful and insightful professors I've had throughout my college career. This class is not a cakewalk, but Trefzger makes it a hell of a lot easier to understand. I recommend taking his class.
If you have no interest in finance you will struggle in this class. Goes through A LOT of material in a short amount of time. I studied extremely hard and barely got a C. Attendance is mandatory and his GA marks down people who are texting, on their comp, or not paying attention. Doesn't let people into review sessions if they have been marked down
Its a hard class with difficult material, but its a weed out class for the COB so its supposed to be, but Professor Trefzger will go above&beyond to help you understand the material. He is willing to set up extra time out of his schedule to teach you & help you understand. If you're willing to put in the effort he is willing to make sure you pass!!
This man is the most disrespectful professor I have ever met. His views and opinions of people are completely inappropriate and he does not understand the modern perspective. I struggled to receive a C. He is not helpful when going in because he is too focused on your personal background and financial status to actually listen to misunderstandings.
The class could be completed in a few days. It is based on roughly 10 equations. He drags this out for an entire semester. Just study his practice problems. I sat through Medieval Christianity for a semester but could not bear to sit through this class. Class is him telling unfunny jokes and no work is actually done. Easy A or B
A goofy guy, really funny but also will keep you working harder than almost any other class. Study the outlines he gives you in detail and you'll do better. Really helpful and personable.
Professor T is a very good guy and enjoys what he does, but his class is terrible. The grading percentages move around and change with the means of the course exams.
Only points are the three tests, plus the paper for the honors class. Go to study sessions before the tests, but he won't let you in if you don't show up to class. Good lectures for finance and he will try to remember everyone name and where they are from. DON'T BUY TEXT BOOK
His teaching methods are a little out of the norm but I enjoyed the class
Prof Tref was amazing. Tough class, but its intro finance so it's not impossible. He makes sure you understand the context and not just memorize. GREAT if ur going into finance. He pokes fun at where everyone is from and pokes fun at himself so I don't see the harm. not an easy A class so don't expect to slack off and do well. Gonna miss his class.
He's a really great professor if you just listen thru his lectures. Most people don't and can't understand why they have a bad grade.
Joey T is an overall great professor. No textbook, he uses his own notes. He is very clear on tests and if you show up to class AND go to the review sessions you should do well. Attendance is not mandatory but, do not expect to just be able to go to the review session and get the same grade. He's also really funny and I enjoyed his lectures
He'll call you out sometimes and maybe shoot you personal emails to check up and make sure you're still coming to class or not falling behind, but other than that he's not too intimidating. Lectures drag but tries to bring in his own humor. If you don't go to class, you won't get into review sessions (but you honestly learn more in reviews)
Great professor, tough class, but you don't have to buy a textbook so that's a huge plus. Financial Calculator a must-have. Proctored final for half your grade blows but it's the only option for summer classes, and he tells you exactly what will be on it. Never had a prof that cared as much about his entire class - pretty cool.
Joey T is a great guy! Class is mandatory to go to review sessions (has a TA mark if you are there, on your phone, working on other things on computer, etc.) Only grades are 3 tests, and three 4pt spreadsheets. Different style of teaching which can be tough, but utilize office hours and you should manage a B. Makes jokes about everyone's towns.
STAY AWAY. STAY AWAY. STAY AWAY. Probably the WORST instructor I have ever had. Your grade is only determined by 3 tests and are nearly impossible (the study material and the test material are almost completely different). Makes you come to lecture by taking attendance. Lectures are pointless. You won't learning anything about finance in this class
He is a good guy. He tries to be funny but its hard with finance. entire class grade is made up of 3 tests. You will need to sit down and grind through studying the material. Use his resources, don't buy the book. Other profs are easier but you learn more with this guy. If you plan to go down the road of finance take him, if not take someone else.
Go to class so you can get into review sessions. The questions he goes over during the review are almost identical to test questions. Didn't really pay attention in lecture and only studied after the review and got an A. Nice guy
Tref is so passionate about his job and his students. He will go above and beyond to make sure you know the material. He takes attendance so go to class. If you put in the work and study you will learn a lot and get a good grade. Don't buy the textbook.
Tref is a great person, has a good sense of humor and loves what he does. Its not easy, but just try & you'll be fine. He is always willing to help a student during office hours and will take as much time as you need on a concept. Go to office hours! I will recommend Tref to anyone who really wants to learn the material, especially Finance majors!
Trezger is a decent teacher, but he wants to see you succeed. Even as a finance major, this intro class is the hardest class I've taken at ISU. The entire class is three tests, but he offers optional reviews the week of. I would highly recommend going to these and visiting him in his office if you want to succeed in 240 and plan on taking him!
Joey T - extremely good guy, did not care for him as a prof. He curves the hell out of grades, in reality I got a 50 something in his class but wound up with a C. First test is easy but the next two are very tough. I tried his office hours but his issue is when I ask him a question he'll answer that question but also 1000 other ones I didnt ask
I personally find this class easy. His own personal outlines are extremely lengthy because he goes into crazy detail. Just study for the tests and do the practice problems over and over until you get the hang of it and you'll do just fine. The three tests are 96% of your grade, so you need to do well, but the material is not that bad if you try.
Avoid him at all costs. Nice guy, terrible teacher. His lectures were painful to sit through. He says reading his long outlines before class helps but it doesn't. He wastes your time with things that aren't even on the test. AWFUL.
This class was a tough one! Hes a super nice guy, but a terrible professor. Lectures were long and his notes were long and hard to use for studying. He has his GA walk around during class and make notes if you are texting, sleeping, doing other work, etc. Only a couple homework assignments but the tests are difficult.
Trefzger is a nice guy but his class isn't too fun. The guy takes attendance in a 160 seat lecture hall. His assistant walks around during class and writes down who is paying attention and who isn't. I never wanted to go to class but when I went I never learned anything. The guy just rants the whole time and doesn't do practice problems.
Professor T's class is in no way easy; then again, neither is any FIL 240 class here. Go to class, everything about the strict GA is true, I wish I kept up with the practice problems more. I know I would have done better with those, that's where you get your "practice/studying" from. Overall, very nice professor who wants you to succeed. Take him!
Lectures are all over the place and very disorganized. No visual aids are used, which make it extremely difficult to pay attention. He rambles the entire hour and 15 minutes... great guy, but his method of teaching makes the class more challenging than it has to be
Dr. Trefzger is a fantastic professor. His lectures are fantastic. No need to purchase a book because he already has his own topic quides. By far my favorite teacher, but he does expect students to listen and do work outside of class to pass exams.
Prof Tref is a great guy, but only that. His teaching style isnt helpful. You end up doing all of the work by yourself. Youre graded only on 4 tests. By far the hardest class Ive taken.
Fantastic professor. The student underneath this post clearly thinks they can wait until a day before the exam to study, then contemplate why it is their grade reflected their work effort. Students, professor T is the man, caring, wants you to succeed, and gives vivid stories/examples for explanation. Never got more then one problem wrong on exam!
This class is BRUTAL to sit through. Everything about the grad assistant on the site that has been said is true. He always makes class go the entire time, however, he will do little to no practice problems at all during the lecture. He just reads his giant paragraph outlines in lecture. He is a way better teacher in his office if you go see him.
Joey T is a super nice guy but this class is BRUTAL. The only grades that he gives are based off of 3 exams. 3. No homework, no quizzes, no projects. Only 3 grades that make up the whole semester. If you do bad on ONE EXAM you can fail the class. I highly regret taking this professor.
Great guy but format of the class makes it very hard to get an A. He has a GA take attendance and docks points for texting, web surfing etc. Not a lot of points to buffer bad exam scores. He is review sessions are very beneficial going over practice problems. Practice problems are mandatory to perform well on exams. Always available for help.
Great guy, horrific teacher. Lectures are long and completely pointless unless you completely study the material before class. All he does is run through extensive problems very quickly while making fun of your hometown. The final grade is based only on 3 tests, 33% each. Please consider Cring or someone else. Much easier.
I know many of the reviews on here can be very disappointing if you have to take this class, but there is hope. He is a great guy, but he is not the best at explaining things. I completed the practice problems the day before the test, which does not work for everyone. Study hard, don't stress, try to understand the material. You will be fine.
The course itself is very difficult, so its mandatory to go through the homework unless you don't want to pass. My only complaints would be he gets off track on occasion and the assistant writes down if you do anything other than pay attention. Do ALL the homework and attend lectures, because he throws in some lecture questions on occasion.
If you are not an accounting or finance major you will find his class very difficult. The textbook isnt required but he gives outlines that are 20-50 pages in length that he expects you to read before class. He gives out practice problems w/OVERLY detailed explanations that will leave you confused rather than actually understand the information.
Took this class online, and it's almost impossible to learn in 6 weeks while working. It's not his fault, he tried to make it easy as possible and even changed grading scale to account for learning it so fast. He's a caring teach and tries to get each student to call him regularly. I just wouldn't recommend taking this class online.
Avoid if possible. Worst professor I've ever had at ISU. Class based only on test scores. Lectures are 50pg single spaced word documents that are overly complicated. Don't bother going into his office hours, he will rush through an explanation w/o answering your question, then make fun of your hometown for the majority of the time you're there.
This is the hardest class I have taken at ISU. And it might be the first class I will have to retake. Do NOT take this class if you are not a finance major. It is absolutely absurd that we have to do everything we do in this class not being a professional in finance. It was WAY too difficult and grading is based on 3 tests.
I haven't hated a class so much more. No one has the attention span to listen to a professor for 75 minutes who is talking in monotone non-stop no visuals just his really extensively long essays that is not clear at all. He just shows his copyrighted work which is way too long not clear and very very confusing.
A lot of people don't like him and his lectures can be a little unorganized, but if you read the material before class (like he says to do) and do the practice problems, you can definitely pass. He's a genuine guy and wants to help you learn. Go to class and his office hours and you can get an A, but he makes you work for it.
He has his own website with each section, homework, and detailed explanations of the answers of each homework problem. He really cares about the material and is super helpful if you pursue it but asks a lot for non-finance majors. The exams are hard and not a lot of questions so a few wrong can be catastrophic. Go to the exam reviews.
Professor Trefzger is a really nice guy. However, his lectures are boring and he goes off topic multiple times. There's not really that many grades in the class so if you fail a test, it's almost impossible to get an A or even a B. Read the outlines and do the questions on his website and you'll be fine
He's extremely condescending and rude. Makes TA babysit & write you up for everything you do during lectures, which are pointless to attend: he makes his own terminology for everything so it's not relevant in the real world. Entire grade is on 4 difficult exams. Don't email him or he will put you on blast for whatever the TA wrote about you.
If you come to class tired, I can almost guarantee you will fall asleep. Some of the most disorganized lecturing I've ever seen, and does a terrible job of teaching the material that you will be tested on. Claims that teaching this way benefits you. Your grade is essentially determined by 3 test grades. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR IF YOU CAN!
This class is nearly impossible if you're not a finance major. Lectures are long, boring and very hard to follow along with his essay notes. He either goes off topic or when you're finally writing notes down he goes too fast and skips ahead. He has the TA walk around the whole class and take notes on what you're doing. Avoid this class if possible.
The reviews on here made me hesitant to take this class with him, but they are all wrong!! This class is EASY. Attendance is mandatory, but if you just show up and pay attention the best you can, as well as go to the exam review sessions, he will tell you literally everything on the exams. I got an A on every exam with minimal effort.
Lectures are very boring and he literally just reads off an outline (which are pages long). I haven't even taken my first test yet, and I am already regretting taking this class with him. Brings in grad assistant to "baby sit" 20-22 year olds, ridiculous. He always says we're boring, when in reality its him that's boring. DO NOT TAKE this class.
One of the most genuine professors. Really cares about his class and wants you to succeed. Lectures can feel long and confusing but he is always accessible outside of class and willing to help.
This class is very difficult due to his teaching style. He makes things confusing and tries to overly explain topics. He is set in stone in his old ways and does not try new things. I personally would not take a class with him ever again.
Professor T is one of the nicest guys youll meet. His class is pretty lecture heavy but he makes class interesting and tells stories to make the problems make sense. Highly recommend taking. Actually cares about his students.
DO NOT take this class with Trefzger. This is one of the hardest classes I've ever taken. A lot of people dropped because it was so hard. His lectures are long and boring. If you bomb one test you have a zero chance at getting an A or B. Do yourself a favor and take this class with Cring.
He is a very nice professor but there is very little guidance throughout the course. He goes through examples in class and explains scenarios but does not show step by step how he gets the answer unless you look online at his website at the solutions for the practice problems.
He means well, but he's a terrible professor. He practically reads his massively over complicated documents word for word, and explains things to the point of mental exhaustion. His teaching style is really old and he doesn't use Reggienet because he doesn't know. He cares a lot, but his teaching style tends to be counterproductive and impossible.
Trefzger gets a bad rep from kids the class who blow off his advice. Finance isn't easy, but if you do the practice problems and pay attention in class, you can get an A. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK.
Joseph is outdated, 240 is unreasonably weighted solely on exams (cumulative final is 50% of your grade), assigns an insane amount of reading and problems, and emails you EVERY SINGLE DAY just babbling on because he has no life. I took his online FIL240, which is VERY dry material, & the pace and his expectations were not worth finishing my minor.
Finance in general can be confusing, you really do have to pay attention and study a lot. If you can push and study hard the first few topics the rest is easy. He is a really caring professor and is very good about communicating with his students. Highly suggest taking over summer online if you have that option.
Personally Asynchronous classes are not for me but the material is very difficult and it was impossible for me to understand anything. Tests are very tightly timed and I could not finish them. Take Cring or wait until next semester.
Great Professor that was always open and encouraged seeing him during office hours. The homework is online with him working out the same problem with different numbers and the step by step for it. The lecture notes are posted online but he adds to them in the margin during class.
Such an amazing dude! Definitely knows his stuff, he's just more old-fashioned than most teachers which is okay. You definitely need to put work into this course and will not pass if you don't, but he is absolutely always available for you to call and ask questions and help you with things you don't understand. Incredible guy. (tests are hard lol)
The Impression that I got is probably a good professor for in-person classes; However, he's horrible for online. He was asynchronous and we had to learn the concepts and formulas through reading long lessons that he gave us with very little help outside of that. The best way to describe the class is an ADHD nightmare. He seems like a great guy tho.
absolutely horrible and would drop if it wasnt too late into the semester. His online format sucks and its very outdated. Makes the course even more difficult. grades homework hard and makes you scan in hundreds of problems all hand written. very little support and he sends constant emails that are pages longs. do NOT take any classes with him!!
Mr. Trefzger will best prepare to get a job in the specific field you are learning. If you are interested in the material, and want to learn the maximum you can about a subject, Mr. T uses a culmination of his intellect and his vast experience in various fields to best prepare are you for what you will see in the future in various areas of finance.
was a very bad teacher for online. have to teach yourself. longgg lesson videos. Lots of homework. Grade heavily reliant on tests. Unless you are already great with finance I would avoid him! He also sends unnecessarily long emails and makes the whole course very confusing and hard to stay motivated.
Good guy but his teaching styles are out of date. Long, boring lectures, outlines, and emails. He overexplains everything and that makes it hard to understand. Tests are worded to confuse you and very few assignments.
Overall, one of the best professors I had. Very friendly, and available if you need help. He will tell you everything you need to know, and as long as you put in the work it should be an interesting class.
He really cares about what he is teaching. He also has office hours all the time and even when he's not there, you can email him or call him at almost all hours. By far the most available professor I've ever had. The one thing I didn't like was that the class was graded on a curve so you didn't really know what grade you had for most of the class.
Joe is knowledgeable and incredibly accessible. However, the lectures are non-stop front to back. He'll cover the concepts of the materials, but tests are largely based on computation. The tests are largely similar to the practice problems he provides. The class is graded on a curve and there is a research essay for the end of the semester.
Trefzger is impossible to learn from. He story-tells through his lectures, making them difficult to follow. The HW takes weeks to complete for a measly 8 points and the Spreadsheet problems are just busy work. Exams are way too long and are solely computational. I am an A/B student, but there was no way I could pass his class...take someone else.
His lectures are entertaining, he is clearly knowledgeable about the subject, and his stories/analogies can actually be helpful in understanding the content. However, lectures can still be pretty overwhelming; I recommend pre-reading the lectures (which he always makes available online) before class. Also, do the optional assignments he releases.
He really did the most to make sure that his students were prepared for any tests or homework or anything we had and is a great person to ask questions. Really appreciated!
Seemed like a nice guy and was very accessible outside of class but wow are his lectures so unorganized. He teaches as if the internet and computers were never created. Every lecture he reads from paragraphs of text that he puts on under the projector with no visible outline. Way too much information and comprehension needed from an elective course
I would avoid this course with this professor at all costs. The structure of the class was archaic and not conducive to learning. There also is very limited transparency throughout the semester about grades and the subjective curving system that is used, so your standing in the course is unknown until the final few weeks. I do not recommend.
Not an enjoyable class at all. Very out of touch from students' perspective. Lots of unnecessary work. Exams are not multiple choice and are hard. Avoid if at all possible.
Professor Trefzger is a great guy and means well. He is just quite old (says it himself thousands of times) and his lectures are out of date and boring. Professor himself will help if you attend class and is available for students quite frequently. He means well but the way the course is laid out makes you think you are in college 20 years ago.
Although Trefzger's teaching style is different than most students are used to, I found him to be very knowledgeable and helpful. Like any class you take, if you're willing to engage and put in the necessary effort, you will have no problem doing well in this class. Overall great professor that cares about his students and wants them to succeed.
Teaches off a overhead and reads off an outline every single class. Class is not engaging and if you struggle focusing, this class is not for you. If you attend class he will tell you what is on the test, however, I still found the test to be quite difficult despite attending over 90% of classes.
Professor Trefzger means well but is just outdated, he will help you out if you go to class and or office hours. He will tell you whats on the exams but they are still extremely difficult. His lectures are boring but he tries to make them funny but its difficult because their so dry.
Does seem to care about the concept of the class, but his teaching style is very dated. Reads off an overhead view of a typed page. States that highlighted areas of outlines are what you need to study; everything is pretty much highlighted. Some outlines can be up to 21 pages long. Too much work if taking other classes.
Trefzger's teaching style may be dated, but he cares about the material and wants students to succeed. Attend class, do the readings, and utilize resources like Unstuck AI - it makes a difference. The workload is high, but manageable if you put in the effort.
Teaching is very out of dated. Very boring professor and he has his GA walk around like a babysitter and takes notes on what you are doing during class. Recommend taking another professor.
Cares a lot about the subject and is very knowledgeable, If you do the bare minimum, go to class, take notes, and do the HW you should be able to pass with at least a C. His teaching style is outdated, he's an old school teacher who only reads from a sheet a paper during lectures but is accessible outside of class and loves to talk about the topic.
You have to go to class to pass. Challenging class but very doable, he is very caring, always willing to help. Was very flexible in working with me while I was gone for drill.
Wouldn't ever take a class with Trefzger again. While he is knowledgable and kind to his students, he has a very hard teaching style to follow. A business finance class should include hands-on examples, but he just reads paper outlines for lectures. Your grade relies heavily on exams. Homework can take hours to complete. Never again.
The course it self is not that bad but Trefzger is not good explaining computational problems for beginner students and lectures are just confusing. If you want to get an A/B you have to teach it all by yourself but the exams are definitely doable if you study an hour a day. Chapter study guides and word problems are directly related to exams.
Trefzger seems nice at first, but his expectations are very high. His teaching is really outdated and he doesn't update your grades on Canvas. No matter how much effort you put into your work, he grades harshly. Too much time spent on hw and teaching yourself the material for the exams. This is the first class I've ever failed as an A/B student.
Literally couldn't pass this class if I tried. The second written hw assignment for this class took up more than 15 pages of my notebook and more than 12 hours to complete. his outlines for homework solutions are more than 60 pages long. the format of this class sucks and he only expects you to learn the way he did. seriously, avoid prof trefzger.
Lectures are super unfocused—he goes on long stories about financial ratios instead of teaching clearly. Exams are pure memorization with ~20 formulas. No practice quizzes or study guides, just written homework. You mostly show up, listen to confusing lectures, then teach yourself. Class average was failing for the first exam (makes your grade)
Class average on the first exam was below 50%, so you start in a hole. Homework and Excel barely matter. Lectures feel outdated and unhelpful. TA reports you for phones or other work. Feels like the professor was great once, but the class now runs on habit, not teaching. Frustrating, not fair.
Got a C on the first exam and got worse from there. Trefzger doesn't know how to teach Finance for beginner students and even the A students say he's not helpful. Lectures do not teach the math questions. I tried his office hours and still learned very little. Exams are 80% of grade and the 10 PAGE HOMEWORK is ONLY WORTH 8 POINTS per unit.
Good luck with this class
I had 240 with Trefzger so I knew what to expect. He has long lectures which can be very boring. There are 3 exams, worth a good chunk of the grade, and a few homework assignments. The class is hard, but Trefzger really cares about his students. He helped me tons in 240 and gave me great advice. Take some time to get to know him. He cares.
The lectures can be really confusing and he doesn't use canvas to grade he would send out an email instead. However he grades on a curve which was very helpful and made the class much more manageable especially on exams which are mostly open ended questions with a few multiple choice questions.
Lectures are rough, he spends too much time on information that won't be on the exam trying to “give context.” I recommend working through the homework problems during lecture. 3 homework's per semester, but expect to spend 8 ish hours on each. We ended up with 13 A's, 14 B's, 26 C's, 8 D's, and 2 F's in the class. I would say 1/4 of class dropped.
