I took his Ethics class and it was challenging only because it made me have to study, which is more than you can say about other classes at CC. He is really a great orator and gives you a different perspective on life. After taking his class you are really humbled and see the world in a whole other light. You become more down-to-earth and begin to recognize more about your inner-self. It is a very enlightening class where you really mature as a human being as the class progresses. Worst professor/ teacher I ever had and will ever take. This guy is slow and cheesy, you cant read his writing. Good luck with this guy.

He is a great professor. I took him during the summer and it was a great experience. If you cannot critically think you will not pass the class. You must be willing to put the time and effort into the readings and essays. This class made me find philosophy interesting and I have purchased a few philosophy books since then.

Very laid back professor, only 3 papers on assigned readings & final which is basically your thoughts on the given topics, extra credit is amazing trips to temples, this course is fairly easy as long as you do the assignments on time you'll pass

Prof. Van de Mortel is a great philosophy professor. He helped me to develop my critical thinking skills. I was not used to think about my everyday life. Yet, after this class, I question most of my ideas and choices. It was a great class. I would like to take other class with Prof. Van de Mortel.

This professor definitely help me develop better critical writing. He makes class interesting and has a sense of humor. He does assignment several writing papers which are mandatory to do or your grade will drop dramatically. Don't be afraid to participate! This class was a different experience but I really enjoyed it. He's really funny!

The class was quite hard for me; reading three books, and writing a five reflection essay between 200-1200 words. However, Professor Mortel is absolutely a helper, so do seek for his advice if you are falling behind. He does have a cursive writing and low voice, but these should not disqualify him as an affecting and inspiring educator.

His monotone is such that I think I wouldn't have heard him from the back. You have to keep track of your own grade. He does not use Canvas. At the end, he simply handed everyone their own card with their letter grade on it. I didn't even know my percentage! But listen up and take notes.

Professor Van de Mortel is an amazing and caring professor. As long as you are in class, ready to learn, and put in the effort, he is more than willing to set aside his personal time to help you out. His lectures are intriguing, he cracks jokes, values and encourages student participation, and is honestly one of the best professors one could have

Ethics is one of the most important classes to take in my opinion, it was life changing for me. As Professor Van de Mortal said, "Ethics is professional decision making.", and what is more important than making decisions? Not only that, but learning about Ethics helps us to make the best decisions possible in situations given the circumstances.

Not one of my favorites. He has a soft voice, and it has sent me to sleep a lot in his morning class. If you've taken ENGL103, you'll probably pass with minimal effort, but I was really hoping for impactful lessons that would develop my thinking, but his class just wasn't it. Gives a calculated grade pretty late in the semester, doesn't use canvas.

I've taken 5 classes with professor Van de Mortel. He's an excellent professor that will often leave you thinking about his lectures after class is done. His tests/homework are mainly essays. As other reviews have pointed out, he does speak in a low voice, so if possible sit near the front of the class. Class participation is encouraged!

Loved this class! He cares about your well being and pushes you to think beyond. Your grade depends on if you read and take notes or not. The more active you are reading, the better your grade will be. He answers all questions and does lots of group debates and discussions about big topics. Youll get to know yourself in this class for sure.

Professor Van de Mortel is a good professor. If you ask for feedback, he provides. However, his teachings are heavily influenced by religion, alongside his views. This might conflict with those who don't gravitates towards this concept of beliefs. Moreover, if you're majoring in a social science field like gender studies- beware of this one.

I really enjoyed taking Professor V class. He had so much insight and his stories were awesome. To be honest I always thought I was open minded , but after taking his class I felt more aware. We got to go to a buddist temple which was really awesome , and I will never forget it. He also wrote his own textbook you should defitnitly take his class!

Be ready to read a lot in this class. He is very inexperienced with much of the internet. Therefore online class was a struggle. No zoom meetings, just independent work. However if you need assistance he gives back good feedback. This class also focuses on your writing strength, so if you are a bad writer beware.
