I thought Van Oss was a good teacher overall, I think I learned a lot, but I know for a fact their are easier speech teachers out there if that's what you're looking for.

Great sense of humor! Make sure you READ the chapters--he's prone to pop-quizes! But great guy...he makes sure you know your stuff, he's one of the more disciplined speech teachers, but worth it since you actually improve! Highly suggested!

VO is really good for helping students. Although the class is a bit difficult, if you talk to him outside of class, he's a lot more easy going. This is perhaps one of my favorite classes.

Although he's a nice guy, he's really hard and there are a lot easier teachers out there.He's extremely picky about his outlines and will take off points for every little thing, it's hard to get an A on your speech.Also there is no down time between speeches.Take him if you're up for a challenge.

I can't say that this class has been easy.. He is a tough grader.. If you decided to take him, make sure you read the assigned chapters; otherwise they'll end up biting you in the ---! Unless you're up for the challenge, don't take him!

Although he is a relatively hard grader, his classes are interesting and sometimes fun. If you have any problems coming up with ideas for speeches, he is always willing to help. I would suggest reading the material in the book because even though it's not crucial, it can be very helpful.

I thought the class was super easy and if you are good at speeches and you read the chapters then you will be fine. I recommend him

I just wanted to say that I took this course with VO and he was very helpful. And contrary to a previous comment, he does give A's but you probably work a little harder for them then other profs.

definatly learn a lot in his class. Very very nice guy, however is a very strict grader. Would spend 3 days working on a speech and get a B when my roomates would write their speech the night before for a differnt professor and get an A. Tests are have very confusing questions.

Van Oss is a very difficult professor to get an 'A' with. I believe the semester I took him he gave out 6 A's out of around 80 kids. However, he is the most helpful professor I have ever met. He will ALWAYS help you with your speeches and choosing speech topics. You WILL become a better speaker, but probably not while attaining an 'A'.

VO is a nice guy who wants all his students to succeed. If you work on your speeches and go in to see him for help, you can easily get an A, I did. His quizzes are difficult but at least they are open notes..which you can get off the internet!

Very helpful, passionate, dedicated teacher. Very flexible and understanding. I thought this would be my hardest class because I dreaded public speaking!! Go see him before every speech- gives advice to suceed, then practice! Midterm (hard),final (Easy), Quizes easy- all are open notes. Chances for extra credit. One short paper on outside speaker.

He is a great teacher and you can have a lot of fun in this class. Just practice your speeches and take notes on the readings and you are golden. He is a great guy, very nice, and you might even get to learn some karate:) If you get a chance-take his class.

difficult but fair grader and can't give a speech worth anything. at first i thought he was really nice, but he's actually kina creepy. only pays attention to the girls, has made weird, derogatory comments. you have to go see him to get a good grade and be a teacher's pet. i wouldn't reccommend him.

Let's be honest... No one wants to take Speech so if a professor actually makes you work hard to earn a grade you are going to be annoyed. VO is tough, make sure you take good notes for the mid-term. Ask him for help because it will help a lot and help your grade. If you're not an enthusiastic speaker, you better learn to fake it.

I was supposed to have a different teacher so I didn't like him right away, but he grew on me. He is a very helpful teacher, he wants everyone to do well and is willing to meet with you to make sure you get the grade you want. I learned a lot from his class even though I hate speech. Lots of work for a gen ed, but it helps you be a better speaker.

VO is a great guy and extremely helpful. Yes, you have to work at your speeches but it is totally worth it! He really cares about his students. Meeting with him and getting help is almost mandatory to get a good grade which kind of made me mad at first but as the semester went on I loved it and he helped so much! VO as he likes to be called is a funny teacher with a ood sense of humor! All quizes he gives you are on D2L so they are open book. I would definitely reccommend taking his class! I dreaded speech because I hae public speaking, but this class ended up being my favorite! You become close with your classmates too!

I really enjoyed this class! VO is always available to help with speeches & answers e-mails right away. Although he makes CST 110 challenging compared to most teachers, I wouldn't regret picking him as a professor- I learned SO much & really improved my confidence with public speaking.

This professor will go out of his way for you to get a good grade. He offers help whenever you need it, so take advantage of it. His course objectives are clear and he does a good job keeping the class interesting.

He is not the easiest of graders but the class is easy. There is no homework outside of speeches and you get a long time to do each one. He gives you a week to two weeks and you can get it done working hard at it the night before. look for the similarities between him and the dinosaur from toy story...they are there!

Said that its almost impossible to not get a B or better in this class as long as you stand up and show effort in your speeches, well guess what its a hoax cause i got a BC and ya i did okay on my speeches. I wouldn't recommend him.

Mr. Vo was a great teacher. He is genuinely kind to all and really gets to know each student. He is always willing to help and encourages everyone. The tests are minimal and open book. The classroom environment is laid-back and comfortable. He is a semi- hard grader though

VO Rocked, he is extremely helpful and wants to help you het the grade you want. Don't procrastinate in this class and you will do great! He keeps the class very fun and speeches aren't as terrible as you may think.

VO is an honest teacher who takes pride in his job. He goes far out of his way to help you if you are struggling because he likes to see his students succeed. He also will ask the class their opinion on almost everything, and will tailor the schedule to you. Just show him that you are there to learn.

VO is awesome. He gets everyone to know each other so no one will be left out. He's super nice and fun. There's also free coffee each day. The grading system is good so it's impossible to get an F unless you are lazy and don't do your work. It's a good idea to get help from VO when preparing a speech; he is a great helper. VO is a good guy looking to help everyone. He is extremely willing to help. He does however expect a lot out of you and sometimes is a very harsh grader. Speeches are expected to be near perfect for an A. overall really good teacher and I recoomend him

VO is an awesome teacher and truly wants you to do well and learn something in his class. The quizes were easy and online and most people didn't have to take the final. He is harder than some the other teachers at La Crosse, but you learn tons and if you do the work, you'll get a good grade. This was my favorite class, I encourage you to take it.

the bottom line: VO WANTS you to succeed. He's extremely helpful but you gotta ask. And don't let his laid back personna fool you... he's a stickler on speeches!! But overall, extremely fun class, you won't be dissapointed. If you gotta take this as a gen ed, then I'd highly recommend this guy over the others.

At first you think that VO is going to be an easy grader, but then after your first speech you realize hes probably one of the toughest speech graders. He says he's there to help you but sometimes you feel like hes forcing his opinions and ideas at you. He doesn't help you develope your own ideas. I recommend taking someone else.

VO is one of the coolest professors I know. It was his first time teaching this particular class, so he was easier on us than the CST 110 students. He seems to genuinely like his students, and its very comfortable to talk to him. We mostly did in class work and group projects. It wasn't a difficult class, but I learned a lot in it.

After you miss 3 classes its 1 percent off your overall grade. I'm not a morning person. He is very approachable and if you have a problem just talk to him about it. TAKE VO!

He is weird at times but I really liked this class. The quizzes and midterm were open notes just make sure to take notes. I didn't like her grading at first but if you talk to him about your speech ahead of time or after he is fair. Final is open note speacking for 1 minute on the last day of class. Totally worth taking with VO

Not the easiest A. It will be difficult but he is willing to help you completely with whatever questions you have. Go to the practice nights!! It's a tough class and speech is never that fun, but it's about as good as a speech class can be.

I thought VO was an approachable professor. He was very helpful, especially during the night before our speech rehearsals. I recommend choosing him for this class.

VO was pretty easy. He gives an outline for speeches so you pretty much just put in your own words. The only hard part is the midterm; you get to use your notes but you still have to study if you want an A.

very nice prof, but very hard grader. He runs on the philosophy that all students should get an average grade and will take give you a reason for why you received that grade. Very easy B, extremely hard A. Majority of his lectures are pointless, which is a shame because they are mandatory. Learned nothing from this class.

However, his syllabus boasts that CST 110 is at the college level, and that you'll be on your own for everything. On the contrary, I felt the class was really limited and guided, much like a high school class would be.

He is a very caring professor. If you want your professor to get to know you and care about you, he is the educator for you. His tests do have 2-3 questions each time with multiple answers. He does not give semester A's out easily. (I feel I deserved one personally, was only a few points off) Put effort in, and hopefully it will pay off in the end!

VO is by far the most caring professor I have had in my two years of college. He truly advocates for his student's success and will help you every step of the way. I went into this class thinking it would be some god-awful speech class, and came out of it in love with all the people I met, the assignments we did, and VO himself is one of the greatest men I've ever met in my life. He's the best teacher I've ever had. If you are taking CST110, take VO.

VO is a great professor. He genuinely cares for each of his students. He makes sure to connect with each of his students with his Rocker Time & that the students become friends (both during and after the class). VO goes out of his way to help his students achieve success in each of the speeches/quizzes and the course. This class was very rewarding.

Quizzes are easy. Very clear powerpoints - easy to learn the material. His grading is fairly average, so be prepared to do something special if you want an A. VO gets to know all of his students individually, so depends on your personality.

Really a cool guy, lectures are very tolerable, well planned and executed. Tests aren't bad, just do some studying and watch out for a few tricky-worded questions. You will be recognized by name and greeted when you walk in the door. This guy wants you to succeed and has a vested interest in your grade and communication skills.

He is such a good teacher for CST 110. You get 3 skip days and you don't ever have to use your book. Plus you get to use your notes for the tests. He is the best.

NOT an easy grader. Has specific requirements, expectations, and due dates. Overall, this was a fantastic class and Mr. Van Oss provided an extremely worth while experienced. I have never had a professor that desired success in my life so much - I truly learned a lot from him. I would recommend V.O. to every single student.

Kinda dorky, but a great guy. Very helpful, and the work load isn't too bad, but you do have to put a little bit of effort if you want a good grade but can get bye with a B with not much effort.

Such a great teacher! Always helpful and energetic. You have to put in the work to get an A, but you learn so much! Things to know: hardly ever use the textbook, can miss 3 days of class with no penalty, brings the class snacks some mornings, you discuss what your grade should be with him, no final. TAKE HIM!

VO is a great CST professor! I would definitely recommend him! Class is pretty easy as long as you do the work and turn in your best work. However, you will not succeed if you don't put forth effort. VO is a great professor but a bit tougher than others when it comes to grading speeches. You do learn a ton. Have to give 4 "speeches" (1 being with a group). Got to use notes on exams. Makes you do long self assessments and meet with him after each "speech" but it actually is helpful. He loves his job and wants you to do well. Worked for my A.

Everything Has pretty much been said about VO.. He is an awesome professor who loves his job and only wants for everyone to succeed. I was not looking forward to my speech class my first semester of college but it turned out to be my absolute favorite class of the semester! I learned so much from this class and from VO! Really genuinely nice guy, who sincerely wants to get to know every student on a personal level and succeed. The class is actually quite a bit of work, but if you stay on top of things and don't procrastinate you'll be just fine. One of my favorite teachers of the semester, I recommend him when taking 110.

I really enjoyed this class. At first, a speech class may be a little intimidating, but Van Oss makes it a point for everyone to know everyone, which gives the class a laid back atmosphere. Also, he is good about setting up the assignments so you will understand. Although the self-assessments are long, they are not hard and taught me about myself.

The workload in the class is beyond overwhelming. It was the hardest class I have taken so far at UWL. Sometimes I think that VO thinks his class the only one we're taking. Although he is pretty helpful, his grading system is whack. If your outlines are the SLIGHTEST bit off from his samples, you will not get a full score. I do NOT recommend him.

VO is a very helpful instructor that wants to help all of his students succeed. He makes sure that everyone gets to know each other which helps to ease anxiety about speaking in front of one another. I gave him a 2 for easiness because, for a 100 level gen ed, it is much more difficult than it probably should be. A's are very possible, though.

There are 4 exams all semester - they are completely open notes, open book, open powerpoint. The material isn't really covered in class but with those materials it doesn't matter. Work load is spread out very over the semester. I'm not a fan of giving speeches, but I definitely became more comfortable giving them by the end of the semester.

VO was a great professor who was always willing to help his students. I was dreading taking CST, but he made it fun, and I got a lot out of the class. Early on, he makes you learn everyone's name so everyone in the class knows each other. Also, he splits the course into sections, with 4 projects, 4 exams,and no final! I definitely recommend him.

VO was awesome. He really made the effort to get to know each one of his students and help according to their needs. I feel like I have become a better speaker, an essential part of life. I really enjoyed this class, it was not hard.

VO is seriously one of the best teachers I have had here in La Crosse. He makes this class so much fun and you truly get to know all of your classmates well. There is probably more work in this class that you need to do compared to other CST classes but you learn a lot and its worth it just to have VO. You wont regret taking this class with him!

VO is a great teacher, easy tests where you get to use a outline that is provided, where all the answers are given. Fun work during class and doesn't really lecture, plays fun games and makes homemade food, a LOT! Take this teacher for a great time in a usually bad class!

One of the best classes offered at UWLAX. VO is one of the most caring individuals you will ever meet. A lot of the work takes a while but is not hard at all. The only class I have taken where people have cared about me and I don't feel like a number. Overall, a great experience.

Taking this class was a delight. If you want a gen ed that is fun , were you actually learning something while not taking to much your time so that you can focus on classes that counts toward your major take him. He is super easy and understanding.

I highly suggest taking VO for CST 110! I really dreaded this class because I don't enjoy public speaking, but VO made everyone feel so comfortable. We all got to know each other on a pretty personal level which made giving speeches so much easier. Take him if you can!

VO's class is really unique and I was not looking forward to speech class but he really helps you through it. I would 100% recommend him. It's not difficult to do well if you try/care. You evaluate classmates speeches and he has you learn everyone's name in the first month. It's impossible not to make friends. Take this class!

Everyone dreads having to take a speech class, but VO really made the class fun. He gives up a lot of his time to make sure students are understanding things. He really just wants you to succeed. The exams and speeches are easy. The best part is he makes everyone get to know each other. You really do make great friends.

I really enjoyed this class because of Van Oss. He was very personable and I got to know everybody in my class really well. Overall, the class was easy with 4 major speeches, one of which being a group speech. The tests were reasonable but lecture could get boring. With this being said, I still loved CST 110 with VO!

VO was awesome! He was a lot of help, giving us no option of procrastinating on our biggest speech which was a persuasive speech. VO's class will require you to put effort towards your grade. But VO is super helpful and will give you everything you need to succeed! Be sure to take advantage of extra credit because it helps a lot!

I had a great experience with VO in CST110. 3 individual speeches, 1 group speech, and 4 open-note exams. VO makes himself available for rehearsals to make the speaker more comfortable. He definitely made me more confident, and helped me excel at public speaking. Take him! He's fun, makes class interesting and overall a great professor.

Absolutely fantastic. He made us learn our classmates' names and we all became so close. When class ended early one day we all still sat together at a table down the hall and talked. It was such a fantastic experience to be in VO's class.

VO is such a great teacher! There are 4 exams that are open everything (notes, lecture slides, laptop, etc.) There is no final and the three speeches you have to do are really easy and he is a pretty fair grader. I would definitely recommend him if you don't like speech, he makes the class super fun and you get to know your classmates really well.

V.O. is great at pushing you to do your best while still maintaining a fun class atmosphere. I learned a lot about being a better speaker in every aspect of my life. You have to earn your grade but he is always there to help you if you ask for it. I have a lot of respect for him and this was a very enjoyable class.

Exams are open note (laptop, notes, study guide, etc) and aren't bad at all. There are three speeches which take quite a bit of preparation, but VO provides good feedback and is willing to help you with any questions you might have. You also get to know your classmates pretty well, which is nice especially if you are a freshman.

I would absolutely recommend taking his class. He makes public speaking as painless as possible with a friendly environment and crystal clear grading criteria. The only thing I didn't like was he's not always very open to speech topics. I got the vibe that if he didn't like the topic, you couldn't do the speech.

If you hate public speaking, take his class!

Truly creates a friendly and open environment for all his students and he works to make it as comfortable as possible for everyone to get up and speak. Tests are a breeze. But, make sure you follow his outlines word for word or you'll be docked for not abiding by how he wants them, almost no room for variation. Great guy, just a decent teacher

Honestly best teacher ever. He isnt funny, although tries to be. But he makes you get to know your classmates which helps the comfort level in the classroom skyrocket. He is willing to help, clear, has really easy open note exams, and grades fairly (meaning not necessarily easy A!) Definitely recommend him!

VO is by far my favorite teacher at UWL. His class is by no means an easy A-you definitely have to work for your grade; however, your amount of effort and corporation with him is included in your grade also. The more you show him that you care, the higher the grade you will receive. I would definitely recommend VO. He is truly an inspirational guy.

VO is my favorite prof at UWL, BUT he is a very tough grader. DO NOT TAKE if you want an easy A. However, he's one the most supportive and genuine people I've ever met, and if you put in the work you'll get an A. I learned a ton from VO and he has helped me tremendously (not just in CST), but for a 110 level class, it's pretty hard.

I was a freshman at UWL in the fall of 2016. I hate public speaking and when I heard this class was mandatory I wanted to cry, but VO (Van Oss) made this class bearable. He lets you grade yourself after your speeches and sticks pretty close to the grade you give yourself. The exams are easy because they are open notes, I never opened my textbook.

He is a great professor. He's very nice and will help you with anything. I really enjoyed his class and met some great friends

He's a very fair grader. The self-evaluments due after each speech can be tedious. Before assigning the speeches, he always presents his own as an example. He's very approachable & friendly. He also tries to make the classroom a comfortable environment by doing things such as having everyone greet each other & learn each others' first names.

VO was an amazing speech teacher! He was creative with all of his lectures. You do 4 speeches: 1 about yourself (no nothing to use), 1 informative (keyword outline), 1 persuasive (keyword outline), and 1 group speech. He gives an example speech before he expects you to give one. He does expect a lot from you, but you get a lot out of the course!

Great educator! You can tell he really enjoys his job and cares about the success of his students. I absolutely loved having VO my first semester freshman year. It is true that he's a tough grader when it comes to speeches, but both the midterm and exam are open note, open book, and you can use any resource on canvas (all of the slideshow/lecture notes are on there). He puts in an effort to know everyone and make everyone feel comfortable.

Professor VO is a really great guy who cares about all of his students. He has a mid-term and final that are open note and around 36 questions. I did not do great on these exams, but I did the extra credit and did well on my speeches. He is a tough grader on our speeches which led me to almost receiving an AB in the class.

VO is a great professor. His class is far from an easy A, but that was to be expected in a speech-heavy class. I came into his class nervous, and he was able to help me get out of my comfort zone with public speaking. The textbook is used for quite a few notes, but overall hes a great teacher, even if sometimes the workload seems like a lot.

He is a slow talker and tells the same jokes over again but he really cares. He is very assessable and wants to see you succeed. Only opened the textbook once. Mid term and exam are open note online. Speeches are your main grade, practice (get the extra credit for practicing with group) and you will pass easily.

VO is a man of his time, he built a community in my class but made some comments that made me uncomfortable. Overall, it was an easy course, but how he organized the class was a headache. I recommend taking him but make sure you ask him about deadlines and where assignments are located on Canvas since he tends to change or forget important dates.

VO cares very much, a lot more than the other CST 110 professors, which means I learned a lot but he also grades a lot harder than the other professors do. But he is always available outside of class and cares about each and every one of his students. He creates an atmosphere in the class that feels more like a fun high school class.
