Horrible teacher hard to understand. Adds no value to his class and isn't open to feedback.
Before you take VanVo, make sure you know your APA formatting. Between his syllabus & announcements, following the assignment schedule is very confusing. The class is taught w/ seminar style so he expects most learning to happen from other students presentations. LOTS of group work $ very little lecturing. Need the book. Provides exam study guides
VanVo is easily the worst professor I've taken at Sac State. He's extremely unclear with instruction and assignment expectations. Literally didn't teach a lick of marketing. Instead, taught something called SYMLOG, how to write APA (wrong), and about how he started from nothing and we should worship him for that. Now I'm stuck contesting my grade.
Good guy but bad teaching. Lectures consist of his personal life and student presentations with everyone worried on their own work to concentrate. None of the material taught in class is relevant as all the questions are derived from the book.
Straight forward professor who gives opportunities for extra credit. Gives real life experiences and helps students prepare for real life matters. Finally a professor who doesn't just read a textbook all class period. This professor prepares you for life and to become financially independent!
This professor does not work with you! He took away my participation points even for no reason. In terms of work, he gives alot of work for little points each. Please avoid! There's a reason he has such negative feedback. He tries too hard to be nice and says he "cares". Wolf in sheep's clothing, imho.
Joseph VanVo is an amazing professor and mentor. His unorthodox methods of teaching real world scenarios truly made this class fun and interesting. Hes here to inspire you to grow beyond your conformt zone and potential. He really cares about his students. Please take the time to speak with him outside of class... you wont regret it! Amazing man!
Dr. VanVo was a great professor. He has a lot of real life experience in what he teaches and relates back to it during his lectures. He offers help outside of class and is willing to schedule appointments to meet if needed. We learned about SYMLOG which is a tool used to analyze and improve interaction between people which is important in business.
Professor VanVo is an amazing teacher. I had the opportunity to apply what we learn into real life examples. We had two exams and one final with study guides that really helps. Of course you had to present at least 4-5 times throughout the whole semester, but that is expected in the MBA program. Overall, you learn to remember not to just pass.
In a generation where many college classes are becoming overly simplified & standardized, Dr. Vanvo will challenge you to rise to a higher standard. His story is inspirational & he SUPPORTS his students. One of my fav. professors! Taking his class is bigger than college, it will teach you many life lessons. Remember, PRESSURE MAKES DIAMONDS!
Dr. Vo genuinely cares about the success and future growth of his students. He shared insights and case studies drawn from his own career. Outside class, Dr. Vo was a trusted mentor, coaching me through the job search and interview process. Thanks to his support and recommendation, I was able to realize my dream career at a global Japanese company.
Dr. VanVo sets you up for success, if you do the work. He offers his time and energy to help you accomplish your goals.
Show up to class + Follow the syllabus + Do the work A Great professor! Will mentor and help guide you to achieve your goals in class and future goals.
Cool guy and cares about his students.
Dr. Vo is a wonderful professor. Students expect to walk into a classroom and expect to learn through osmosis. Dr. Vo provides a hands on experience type of learning. Teaching by doing. People miss the point about learning. He doesnt give you the answers, but asks the questions that help guide you towards the answer. Dr. Vo is truly inspirational.
Lot's of group work but tests are super easy! He gives out a test bank and you just study it! Also gives out extra credit.
For anyone who wants to be an Entrepreneur, this man is a MUST. Not only is he knowledgeable in his field but he actually has quite a few of his own businesses! BUT beware, this class has about 7 group project related things and if your group sucks, you will struggle to pass this class. I got lucky enough to be in a group with GOOD students.
This professor is okay! For my class, he tried to be nice to help us really plan out our future business ideas. That is the only good thing I can say about him. Don't even bother to go up and talk to him, he is rude and unreasonable with a attitude. I had no option to take him again for MKTG 190 because he was the only teacher, horrible.
I don't have enough room in this text box to write all the great things about Professor VanVo. I had a very difficult personal situation during my last semester during his ENTR 187 class and he worked with me and he made it known to me that he had my back. He is extremely fair and gives all students an opportunity to succeed and receive an A.
Took Dr. VV last semester & he is amazing! He extends a hand to all students, will go above & beyond to help you, & wants you to succeed. The most caring Prof. I've met at Sac, I'm taking him again for MKTG160 & I'm already loving the class. He was also kind enough to help me with my MBA application! Great mentor! Take Dr. VV, you won't regret it!!

This class has 2 midterms and one final exam. Semester long project with a group of your choosing (choose wisely) that amounts to 30 page paper and presentation. VanVo is a very caring professor and legit only wants to best for you. Also, he gives you word 4 word the Q&A that will be on the exams! He gives you 100 possible, and chooses 50 of those
Vanvo is probably one of the greater professors I've had in a while. He cares about your success after college and will give you opportunities for you to find a job. He likes assigning group projects which include group writing assignments. I enjoy him as a professor and a professional connection.
VanVo took over my class for Fechner this semester. VanVo seemed ok at first but lecture quality dropped. Also, the final exam avg was a 65 as there were 20 fill in the blanks w/no word bank. VanVo also took out weird words that made no sense. I got an 85 which was the highest exam grade. He also gave most people around an 80% on participation.
Professor VanVo is a kind and caring teacher who goes above and beyond to help his students succeed. After he helped me with my Cover Letter and Resume I was recruited for an amazing and competitive internship. If you attend lectures and participate in class discussions you will do well. Lots of opportunity for extra credit.
this guy is amazing! take this class! The best part was how inspirational he was. He is different from other professors by being so REAL. He cares for his students and i honestly learned a lot from his class. MUST TAKE THIS MAN FOR ANY CLASS HE TEACHES. Special teacher, super smart and very connected! must still do work and TRY. thanks again VanVO
I took Him for FIN101, I cant think of anything that he could have done more to help the students in the class. Easy access with office hours, study material for tests and short but direct lecture in class. the only thing you needed to do on your own is read and study, even the business plan project was collaborative. you get what you put in.
VanVo is one of the professors that I enjoyed most out of my 18 units this semester. There are chapter pre and post homework using the Connect website, a group of 2-3 people where you will be working on a semester long project and one side project and three exams total, he gives you the study guide prior. He class is overall simple and he is caring
I would highly recommend this class! Professor VanVo cares about his students and wants them to do the best they can. He is helpful by giving extra credit opportunities and making the group projects relevant to real life situations. He is passionate about the subject he teaches and it shows.
Professor VanVo is a great professor! He encourages students to do their best and is helpful by giving extra credit opportunities. The class is useful if you pay attention and complete the assignments. He went above and beyond to help his students build professional resumes. He really cares about his students and wants them to be successful.
VanVo is a great guy, you really end up liking him after this course. He wants you to do well in life, not just in his class. Most of the class isn't very finance specific. Lots of group work, big project, a couple little projects. Exams have Qs & As posted before, easy if you've got a good memory, very difficult if you work out every question
Do not hesitate in taking Vanvo He is the best professor that Sac state has to offer. He is very respectful and helps alot!
You learn nothing from his lectures, he goes over three slides then done. He is very full of himself, always talking about his businesses. You have to sign in for attendance. Do not buy the book. The business plan is definitely a real world experience. However, for the plan he doesn't even grade on the content. The grade is mostly based on APA.
Dr. VanVo has been one of the best professors I have come across and I look forward to getting to take him again as I move into the MBA program here at CSUS. Dr. VanVo is passionate about teaching, shares real world experience, and teaches us how to form an entire business plan along with how to fund a startup. Highly recommended :)
Big group project is you start a business and complete a business plan. It was not difficult, and an example is given to help you with format. No homework, and no burdensome textbook reading. Exams are straight forward with study guide given. This professor is straightforward, and provides a lot of insight into real world concepts. Highly recommend
I would 100% recommend taking a class with Dr. VanVo! I have taken ENTR187 and MKTG121 with him and can say that he is someone who cares about his students and wants them to do their best and always offers an ear and helpful advice. He loves the subject he teaches and it shows! He is very inspiring and truly wants to see you succeed in life!
Take a class with Dr. VanVo! I have taken two classes with him and have honestly learned so much! He is very inspiring and humble and wants everyone to succeed so dont be afraid to ask questions if you dont understand something! And stop by his office hours with any ideas he will help you with refining them and connect you to potential investors!
Hands down my favorite professor. He has full knowledge of the course he teaches and years of experience to back it up. I have him for two classes and enjoy both of them immensely. Highly Recommend!!!
The best professor I have had in my whole college career. He makes sure you have the resources to succeed and is willing to help outside of class. I have him for two classes and am not disappointed, would certainly recommend looking for him for any classes you need.
Why did I not know about Dr. VanVo before I took FIN 101?? Get into his classes if you can. You wont regret it and should keep him as a mentor forever. Amazing backstory and practical knowledge about business/life. Has multiple successful business ventures running currently (unlike some capstone professors...).
Dr. VanVo is one of my favorite Professors that I have had. He expects hard work from his students, but only because he wants them to be very successful and shows it. He provides quality resources to prepare for the exams and class making the exams and quizzes easy if your are prepared. Class sign in sheet. Definitely recommend taking him!!
I'm surprised he's not rated higher. Tbh my group mates did most of the work, but he grades pretty well. Theres a lot of writing involved. 35 pages business plan. APA format is important. Exams/quizzes were pretty easy, expect for fill-ins. I would take him again. Take the extra credit opportunity to make it even easier.
Dr. VanVo is one of my favorite Professors that I have had. He provides quality resources to prepare for the exams and class making the exams and quizzes veryeasy if your are prepared. Sign in sheet for class participation and one large group project stretched over the semester. Gives excellent feedback and definitely cares about student success!
memorize the study guide questions bc they are all on the exams. he expects you to know them verbatim bc the fill in the blanks are unreasonably difficult. dumb way of teaching where you memorize all the stuff HE wrote. pick a good team bc all quizzes/participation/projects are in teams. he talks very highly & very often of his own achievements.
Dr. VanVo is the best teacher I've had at Sac State. He follows his syllabus and sets clear expectations. He gives a study guide that has 100% of the material covered in the exams. There are two group projects, a few quizzes and 3 exams. Dr. VanVo is fair, understanding and inspirational. I hope I can take his other courses in the future.
Great prof! He provides many resources for the material, exams, and even career advancement. Class consists of a group paper/presentation & quizzes + individual exams, to which he gives the Q&A in advance. Extra credit is fair, def take it on! He grades tough, but it challenges you to develop your skills. He'll help with your resume too, just ask!
Prof. Van Vo is intimidating, but in a good way. He cares about the class and as a student, you end up wanting to do your best because you don't want to let him down! Attendance is very important. Read the chapter summaries he provides and you will do fine. Also, he gives you the test questions a week in advance for you to prepare.
I took Professor VanVo's ENTR-187 class last Fall 2019. It was one of the classes in CSUS that inspired and had me driven to pursue the entrepreneurial world. He has decades of hands-on experience and knowledge on what it takes to be an entrepreneur and intrapreneur. He spends time and helps student not only in class but outside in the real world.
Very knowledgeable about the material. Rigorous yet doable in-class practice for us to excel in the financial aspect of business. He cares a lot for his students and helps them anyway he can. Prof. VanVo gives a lot time to aid his students not only with lectures but in the real business world.
Professor Vanvo is excellent. I enjoyed his class very much, and it was great that he made himself available throughout the semester. He is motivating to the students. I feel that professor VanVo is invested in the success of his students. He has helped guide me in my efforts to establish a non-profit. I signed up for his class next semester
I'm glad to have Professor VanVo again. He has a very inspirational story, which motivates students. He is kind and knowledgeable. Professor VanVo has helped me beyond his duty as a teacher, and has invested time guiding me in my quest to start a nonprofit. He really cares about the students and their future beyond Sac State.
This is my third time taking professor VanVo. He is a great teacher that wants all of his students to succeed not just in the classroom, but also in life. He is easily accessible and can help with resumes to even opening a business. Exams are easy if you study the study guide and group projects help build team leadership.
I'm confused why he has so many good ratings. Probably because people are happy he gives the answers to the tests? However, he gives the answers in an overwhelming study guide that is impossible to learn from. The class is really just regurgitation of the study guide and a group project. Doesn't listen to your question carefully & comes off rude.
This is my second class I am taking with Dr. Van Vo. He really inspired my to push my self to be a better student, and to think big. He is always ready to help with academic or real life problems. He will definitely push you in the right direction. the projects are real world situations that will benefit you in your business life.
Attendance matters in this class. He monitors the time you check in for Zoom meetings. Lectures are based on PowerPoints. 2 midterms and 1 final. You will be in a group throughout the whole semester, groups are chosen by him. Test are hard. No study guide given for test. He just said study the PowerPoints. Not helpful!
Dr. VanVo has been very helpful this semester. The class is involved and not just lecture or "death by powerpoint." There are group case studies presented and participation points are given to encourage teamwork and participation, as a class should be. Dr. VanVo provided a study guide for the exams and drops the lowest scoring midterm.
Dr. VanVo is my absolute favorite! He provides the best real world examples and inspires his students to be successful. He genuinely cares about his students is the type of teacher that you look up to. Classes are open discussion, semester long group project, study guides are your best friend, and many extra credit opportunities. Highly recommend!
Dr VanVo cares so much about his students! He will guide his students every step of the way, and ensure that each of them are taken care of accordingly and fairly. Make sure to study the study guide and you will do well! Awesome semester long group project where you start your own business! Extra credit opportunities! Inspirational life lessons!
1. Comes across as rude in answers. 2. Does not test knowledge. Tests ability to read the PowerPoints he writes and formats questions in a way to try to trick you (i.e. switching numbers, omitting a small detail amongst a paragraph to see if you catch it, etc.) 3. Will publicly call students out for having technology issues when he won't fix his
A complete joke. Rude. Mean. Refuses to use tools like canvas. Has you email him assignments and quizzes at certain times. Just a complete joke. If you ask any questions be prepared to be berated because he will legit talk down to you in front of everyone. Stay away far far away
Great class & teacher. Dr VanVo can be very serious but has a great sense of humor & he wants students to thrive & succeed. In 270 we had 2 tests which he provides thorough study guides for & are reasonable for the MBA program, a group project with 2 submissions, 2 individual assigns (paper on The Goal book & short SYMLOG assign). Take this class!
Professor VanVo is the most caring professor I have ever had in my long college career. He was a helping hand in a personal matter I was dealing with during his course and I wouldn't have been able to make it through the semester without him. He is always available outside of class for his students to help them in any way he can. Excellent teacher!
Marketing 190 was one of the best courses I was able to take in my undergrad career. Professor VanVo was able to bring his professional experience with multinational marketing and relate it directly to course material. Learning about real world experiences helped us connect the dots and learn what hurdles and constraints may arise worldwide.
MBA 270 was a very informative course and is a great class to take when starting out in the MBA program. All of his directions for essays and the exams are very straight forward. Professor VanVo is always available outside of class hours and is a great listener. This is one of my favorite courses so far in the MBA program.
This is my second time with this Professor as he is very educated in RE and owns his own brokerage firm. His tests are taken directly from the chapter summaries that he provides. Group projects, presentations, and papers are graded more on completeness rather than content in my opinion. 2 small assignments, 2 group papers/presentations, 3 tests.
He does not care about students. Even before the class started I emailed him for some clarifications, he replied back but did not answer my question so I emailed him again and he said refer back to the email. Like theres nothing I can refer back to if you initially didn't answer my question. Idk, just seems like an arrogant person. Would not recome
This is the second time I have taken Dr. VanVo. If you have an opportunity to take his classes, I highly recommend it. I gave a 3 on difficulty because the level of difficulty depends on how much you apply yourself. Dr. VanVo brings extensive real-world knowledge to his lectures. He also provided a summary of all chapters and a study guide
Professor VanVo cares very much about his students. He's always willing to help with both course related and personal matters. The class is mostly made up of student presentations but he's a very generous grader and mostly just wants you to understand the material.
Tbh dont listen to the good reviews. I took this class expecting a good teacher, but he does not lecture. Tests are multiple choice but dont make sense (he writes the test himself) class is pretty much only group presentation. Grade only consist of a group paper, group presentations, and 3 tests. Your grade is based off your peers and not you.
At first Dr. Vanvo seems like a very strict professor, but in actuality he is very caring about his students in making sure they are successful in his class and out. He has extensive knowledge about real-world business strategies that are really interesting to learn about. Youll have to put in work, but he always offers help in any way he can.
This class is really beneficial when it comes to learning about real business strategies like opening your own business. Dr. VanVo gives you actual knowledge of what exactly it takes to start your own small business. You get what you put in when it comes to this class, so if you really want to understand the material you have to put in the work.
Dr. VanVo is a solid professor. Beginning of class is confusing but the syllabus is the roadmap. Literally. Whatever questions you have, he'll tell you to refer to the syllabus. But honestly the syllabus had all the instructions to all the group projects and presentations so read it carefully. Total of presentations were 4 and 3-4 papers.
Clear expectations, regular participation emphasized. Group projects and quizzes are fair. The professor's real-world experience enriches the class. Highly recommend; he prioritizes student success.
Bad professor and boring lectures. He scared the class at the beginning of the semester; causing a lot of people to drop his class. He got better throughout the semester, but he was still bad. Group presentations start on the 3rd week of school, 30 page group paper due at the end of the semester, and 4 group presentations.
Dr. VanVo,an exceptional educator, readies students for the business world with structured classes and clear expectations. He prioritizes student input in grading, emphasizing attendance and submissions. His effective teaching methods, business acumen, and mentorship create an enriching experience, preparing students for success beyond the classroom.
Dr. VanVo doesn't lecture and it consists of him skimming over chapter summaries, then talking about his investments and EB-5. 4 presentations and 2 papers that are the same ones his other classes do. Kind of funny and annoying, but he uses the same phrases repetitively such as, "CHALLENGE ME," "Free of Charge," "LEGALLY," "Conflict of Interest."
The start of the semester I found Dr.VanVo confusing due to not being used to the way his class is structured. Just note if you have a question, the syllubus has the anwser...4 presentations: SYMLOG, 1 Case study, Milestone 1, and Milestone 2... 4 Quizzes, 2 exams... 2 essays...Participate! He comes off as very strict but he has a very kind heart!
Honestly not the worst class. He is a very easy grader when it comes to quizzes and group assignments. But make sure you choose a good group in the beginning of the semester cuz you gonna due multiple assignments with them which is a majority of your grade. Attendance is mandatory as well. 4 quizzes, 1 midterm and 1 final, all in person no notes.
Dr.VaVo may come off as intimidating at first but genuanly cares for his students & their future. He has alot of wisdom to share if you're willing to listen and apply it.If you give him your time he will give you opportunities to grow, whether that is with a resume, job search, travel or advice.Main project helps u see application of inter business
Prof cares about his students. He is always telling us that he is there to help us and he has shown that previous students still reach out to him after graduation. I find him inspiring and the course material is exactly what I need for my concentration.
Professor VanVo is one of the most inspirational professors in the business department. He truly wants to help each student succeed career wise. Take time to speak to him in his office hours. Class was group project oriented with a couple presentations. He gives out a study guide for the final.
Very good for your transcript, however extremely boring. This professor is very lenient when it comes to issuing credit, but my god is the lecturing boring and somewhat inaudible. If you have a chance to take professor with a higher rating, I'd do it, otherwise stick with this guy. An easy A so long as you stay on top of work
FIN 143 was one of the most interesting and enjoyable courses I have taken. The layout of the course was simple and straight forward. Dr. VanVo has a similar layout in all of his classes, which is why if you've taken him before, it will be a similar layout of assignments and group work. He definitely cares about students and wants to help us.
Dr. VanVo is an amazing professor! He has a similar structure in all of his classes so if you've taken him before, it will be similar Very straightforward and super interesting class if you're into real estate. Dr. VanVo is very caring and is there to help his students, which is why I believe all business students should take him at least once.
Overall, the material is very straight forward and Dr. VanVo delivers it in a way that is extremely easy to understand. Very easy and fun class. If you know how to follow directions, you'll do well in this class! Definitely take him if possible at least once as a business student. He truly wants us to succeed and help us in our academic careers.
Dr. VanVo is an amazing professor. The class was very straightforward and had the same outline as his other classes. Although he might seem intimidating at first, he really isn't and he wants all of his students to succeed. Definitely take his class if you're able to!
TAKE THIS CLASS. Never met a professor who wanted students to succeed outside of the classroom more than him. Helps consult on real-life real estate projects as well as deliver a masterful education to prepare students for REAL Business. Attend class and his office hours, and he can impact your life amazingly.
Professor VanVo wants his students to pass. He drops a lowest quiz score, allows a cheat sheet on exams, allows extra credit, and also can give points back on the Milestone project. Milestone Project takes up majority of the semester, so choose a good partner!
The Professor is a good guy with honest intentions. He can be stern and serious, but then also humorous. He takes his class very seriously. However, I can't say I learned a whole lot from class time. Lectures are brief and there are lots of presentations. Midterm and Final are tricky and you have to know the material.
One of the best professors I've ever had and truly inspirational. Dr. VanVo teaches skills that go far beyond the classroom and genuinely help students launch meaningful careers. He helped me secure a job in Japan and has been an incredible mentor throughout my college years and professional life.
I had Dr. VanVo for multiple courses and often went to his office hours. His advice was practical and helped me get into the right mindset for the professional world. He encouraged big picture thinking about business and life and was very motivating. I learned a lot from him.
Took him for MBA 501 and 270.
