I'm actually a student at CMU and he was the first professor I had when I started here. He is hands-down, without a doubt the best teacher I have ever had. He taught me something no one else has...how to think for myself! Take one of his classes!!!

This is one of the coolest professors I have ever encountered. He tells you what is going to be on the test, and all test are multiple choice. Over all a good guy.

Although you don't need to go to class because his lectures don't have anything to do with tests, he is funny to listen to. Has a story for everything. Study guide is GOD! He gives you everything for the test.

For the people who talk about how his lectures aren't on the test..FYI..it's because the stuff he teaches you in class is to THINK FOR YOURSELF! He's not just concerned with test scores..see past them and learn to not just accept what everyone tells you.

I agree with what everyone else said. He is a great prof. and a great guy. Very smart and has a lot of personal stories. Yes, he does give you detailed study guides, but you still have to study. Don't let the laid-back atmosphere of the class fool you.

Class was tolerable. Make sure you study the study guides. That's what will save you. Every thing on the study guides is on the test, almost word for word. Use that to your advantage!!

He is a great prof! i loved my Soc382 class. We got to watch movies, which He tied into what we were learning about at that time. He is a great Prof. and very understanding

He was a really cool guy, got to be one the best profs i've had. Has experienced a lot of things, tied in to what we were learning making things a lot more understandable. Would definitely recommend this prof to anyone taking sociology.

One of the best professors I've ever had. GVSU needs more like him! Makes the 8am class interesting and fun. Exams are super easy. He gives you everything you need to know the lecture before the exam ("spoon feeding"). One research paper is 30% of your grade, but he's pretty nice about it. Take him!

This is the BEST Professor I have every had. He has strong opinions, but he is intersted in hearing what we have to say!! He spoon fed us for all the exams. We had to do one paper. It took a little time and a lot of thought, but I did well and you can too! Take this professor!! He ROCKS!!!

He is awesome! I had this class at 8:30 in the morning and if it wasn't for him...I would not have gone! He makes the class enjoyable and always cracks jokes! I do not think he is rude at all and you can always go to him if you have a question! Very helpful!!! TAKE HIM...BEST PROF EVER!!!

Professor Verschaeve is the coolest professor I have ever had!! Although he played me and I still don't know why I got a 'B', he still is awesome!! He's hilarious and he always tells you what is going to be on the exam... the only time you need to go to class are review days and test days!

Wish more Prof's were like him, he's all about teaching and student's learning not making sure there's going to be a nice "Bell Curve" at the end of class. Plus, he makes learning fun. I enjoyed going to his class.

Absolutely hilarious. If you really want to learn about sociology, you're better off reading the book and not attending lecture. If you want an easy A and very entertaining lecture, then you've found your man. If you are a close-minded fool, he will probably offend you. Basically gives you the exam questions, which aren't even hard to begin with.

I was actually planning on dropping the class earlier that day, but went to it anyways and was totally hooked! He has some of the greatest stories ever (even though most are made up). He tells things as they are and has opened my eyes to a lot of things. Only prof I've ever wanted to applaud after each class! Love the boots!

I loved this professor! He basically spoon feeds you the exam questions. I never went to class, yet I got 100% on all my exams. There is one paper, but he lets you redo it, and you can chose your topic. I liked sociology a lot, but he made me want to minor in it. A great guy, very understanding too!

Wonderful professor! His wealth of life experience is reflected in the lectures, which are always entertaining. Very passionate about the concept of social justice & the importance of human dignity. Well worth the drive from GR to Holland to take this class!

Wow, this professor lets the class really slack off. I liked that attendance was not necessary however I was not motivated to go. There are 3 exams, but he tells you all thirty multiple questions beforehand, what a plus. He doesn't believe in grades, so that's his reasoning. 1 paper is due, 8-10 pages on a subject--we get to re-do it. TAKE HIM.

I loved him, as always. He teaches based on life experience, and he makes the subjects real for you rather than teaching by a book. He has always been available for me when I needed him, and he is extremely accommodating. Don't take advantage of his lax style! He has so much to say; his lectures are inspiring and eye opening.

If you want an easy class then take one of his. He is very laid back, gives you everything you need to know for his exams and usually assigns one paper. If its easy you want take him. If you want to be challenged then you might want to skip this prof.

I am not a socially major so this class was a challenge for me. However, Joe kept it interesting and always let us out early! My classmates who are soc majors love him! He worked in a prison for quite some time so he has plenty experience behind him! Take him if u can...

The class is easy. You mainly just listen to him telling stories. Easiest tests I've ever taken, final took about 25 minutes. I would advise people to take this class if they needed to fulfill a gen. ed

Joseph is an amazing professor and a great orator. He is very animated and uses many different methods to grab your attention. His class is laid back and easy and he allows you to say what's on your mind. Only 3 or 4 exams, most of the information is from the book but is covered in lecture too. As long as you go class you will get a good grade.

Lectures are not from the book at all. I found the tests to be very difficult, along with most in the class who scored very low. He's a nice guy, but I would not call it an easy class. At least you don't have to do much busy work throughout the semester, though.

He tells you what is on the test exactly. Some questions are hard, but it really doesnt take up a ton of time to study. Really the only work was the paper.

Great professor. Has a ton of real-world experience which gave life to the topics he was teaching. Tests were straightforward and the topics for the midterm paper were handed out early so you have more than enough time to do a good job. Showing up and taking decent notes will get you a good grade.

Really funny guy, and very knowledgeable about his material. He's got a lot of real world experience that he isn't afraid to share with the class. His lectures and tests pretty much follow the textbook exactly, and they're not very difficult, which is always a plus.

He has slide shows and pretty much goes right along with the book. You don't even need to buy the book to be honest, his notes are clear. He is hilarious to have as a teacher, always a joy. Tests are easy. If you ask for multiple choice, he will do it.

Professor Verschaeve is one of my favorite professors at GV. His SOC 201 class is extremely interesting and really easy. He prepares you well for the exams and practically gives you all of the information you need for the exams. I would highly recommend taking a class with him.

Such a genuine, funny, intelligent man. All of his lectures keep you engaged and laughing. Possibly the most intelligent man iv ever met, and i learned so much from him. Literally tells you what is on the exams... you just have to PREPARE and you will get an A. He has a lot of experience and would make a great mentor.

I have taken 3 classes with Joe and would take them all over again plus more. He has SO MUCH WORLD EXPERIENCE AND SO MANY GREAT STORIES. He is a bank of knowledge! Attendance isn't mandatory, no quizzes either. He really is a loving, caring man. If you want to laugh, get an A, and learn real world useful information, take him.

Overall, he is a good professor and knows what he is talking about. He doesn't use powerpoints and rarely uses Bb, so going to class for lecture is pretty much mandatory. He's pretty funny at times and tries his hardest to make the information somewhat interesting. I never once opened the textbook.

Told myself every day that I didn't need to go to class, but I still did. Honestly, the easiest class ever. Four exams, including the final, all multiple choice. Lecture before each exam, he gave us a short list of vocab to memorize and we could all ace it. One paper, pretty long, but not too hard if you just get it done. Definitely take him.

He is an amazing professor. He makes classes very fun and always has hilarious stories to tell. I always looked forward to going to this class. His exams are so easy if you just pay attention to what he is saying. He is very passionate about his job and he is willing to answer any questions you have. You write one paper, but it isn't hard at all!

This professor is really funny and attending class was always interesting. Except, his SOC 205 class requires an 8-10 page paper where my friends with other professors did not have to write. Super funny guy, but maybe avoid if you don't want that huge paper. Don't bother purchasing the textbook!

This guy is hilarious, as well as a genius. Engaging and interesting lectures that are always entertaining. The tests are fine if you look over his short study guides. I was glad to be in his last class before he found another job. Worried he was in a different political party, but that's a different issue :-P

I loved this professor; one of the best I've had. He is hilarious in his lectures and is so 'real' and down to earth. There's no assignment besides a paper near the end and there were only 3 exams and the final (which he tells you everything that ill be on the exam). I would so take a class with him again, but sadly he is leaving GV next year.:(

Most of his lectures were good, but most of which was on the test, he also likes to tell stories. If you look at the study guide he provides and read a bit about it then you will do great. Only 3-4 exams and a paper thats all your grade is on. Had a few guest speakers, lectures, videos, and reading. Basic class.

Joe is hilarious and easygoing. He is a great lecturer and didnt give any homework other than one research paper and 4 exams.

The man's just a treasure with enough interesting personal experience to fill a book. I could hear his stories for days.

Professor Verschaeve is a very down to earth and authentic person. I had him for INT 100 online which was a very cool class. I learned a lot, while also not being stressed by an overload of homework. There were weekly discussions along with one group project that I enjoyed doing. I would definitely recommend this professor!

Professor Verschaeve was very accessible through email, & he was very quick to respond & help in any way he could. He was very clear with the expectations of the class & an easy grader. As long as you participate in the weekly content & group work you will do great in this class! Definitely would take him again, & do co-curricular events early on!

Prof V is awesome. This class was completely online but he gave clear instructions on what to do for each week and was always available for extra help. Only discussion posts and 3 exams that are pretty easy. He lets you submit any discussion late by any time and will still grade it up to 100. Very caring and wants his students to succeed. Take him!
