Screwed sense of humour, but still funny (if it is not you).Does his best to help
has a phd, and is teaching first year math?? not very easy to understand
DAMN...
good teacher, hard tests.
he is sooo hard to understand and his test are VERY hard
He is a good teacher, BUT!!! he yelled at me in the class!
i found him plain mean. He said to come get help if you need it but he makes you feel stupid if you just need some help going over concepts again.
didn't quite understand him..
Just because he has a PHD in math or whatever doesn't mean he should be teaching it.......he might be super smart but he really should've chosen teaching 101
Joseph is a math genius, and really cares about students if they study. If he knows you don't study, he treats you like you're an idiot(fair enough). He makes the test sound impossible so you overprepare, but then makes the test writeable.
Worst instructor I've had so far. Don't take any courses he teaches. Hey Joseph, why don't you sit down for five minutes and convince yourself that you're a lousy instructor!
So patient. Answered our stupid questions over and over and over.
very hard to understand because does not speak english well
He knows his stuff and expects you to learn the material. He is disorganized and his notes are sometimes fractured, but you're not in high school anymore and whether or not you realize it, he realizes it!
Do your homework - that is the only way you can get help out of this man. Sometimes makes you feel silly for asking questions - do so anyway sometimes he's wrong. Tests are pretty straightforward if you've done your homework.
useless - impossible to understand due to limited ability to speak english - lacks civility and respect for students - very substandard performance compared to the benchmark of UCFV
Do all of your homework and you will do fine in his class. He is always willing to answer any questions you have, and very patient. He didn't seem very approachable at first, but he really is very helpful! The only problem might be the language barrier...
Nearly impossible to understand because he can't speak English very well. Very unapproachable.
Joseph Yu, simply put, is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He has no patience and absolutely no sense of humor, a total tight-wad. The kicker is that he can't speak english to any degree worthy of communicating mathematics.
simply put, this man is an absolute digrace to the teaching profession and to UCFV. I admit, he knows his stuff, but the guy cant teach(or speak)worth squat.I strongly advise not to take this sorry excuse for a prof-EVEN IF IT IS A LAST RESORT.ps joseph:i see that teaching is not ur strong point
"Convince yourself" and "drop the course" are his two favorite things to say. Can you say helpful Joseph? I think not.
Not an approachable person. His exams are hard and you lose marks if you don't answer quastions his way, even if you get the same answer. He's your only option for 211, so suck it up.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK. If you don't, you will fail GAURANTEED. There's a lot of material to cover, so the course moves VERY quickly. You have to stay on top of the homework if you want to do well. Poor english is a barrier. If you give him attitude, he'll make fun of you. Humility goes a long way.
I think he is a good teacher, but it takes a little bit of time to get use to his way of teaching.

his class was boring
Chinglish anyone? If you can understand the guy your a step ahead. Then you will realize he is a jerk. He actually yells at people in class that ask questions and tells them they are holding everyone else up. Do we not pay for his services?
I took precalc with Joseph back in the day (maybe 1998).I still remember this guy fondly-yes, I remember the accent was tough but he really was a math whiz. If he mocks you, he either really liked you or thought you were an idiot, which kept you guessing.Headed into my doctorate now and I occasionally find myself saying "is that right?"2my classes
I failed Joseph's class, but it was my fault. He even approached me, told me to do my homework, and that I could pass. Anyone that doesn't like Joseph doesn't like working for their grades. Joseph's rating here only the opinion of people that hate math, suck at it, and want to coast through math. "You don't know that! You gonna fail! I promise."
it's hard to understand him but he's not that bad. just make sure you do your homework and study his notes and you'll be fine.
this man is a complete DISGRACE to the teaching profession, avoid him at all costs. the man has an overall poor attitude towars his students and is a genuine jerk
I do not like Math, but took this course as part of my program. Joseph was brilliant but could not teach the material. He laughed at people that did not understand and asked questions. Makes you feel bad when you are not a math whiz and are trying to give an honest effort. Not approachable to get help after class. S.O.L
STAY AWAY! This man hates teaching, hates students and might even hate math. You can't understand what he says and his writing is terrible. His marking is alien and gives "check X's" so you don't even know if you did anything wrong. His quizes and midterms are insane and his homework gets very long. The math centre can't help you if you get Joseph.
If you like to get mocked, then join Joseph Yu's class.
I'm sooooo afraid of askin questions, cause if ur not bright he isn't help u very much
I probably took the brunt of more of his mocking than anyone, and had more trouble with his accent than I can begin to describe. Whoever said he doesn't like teaching is nuts. He just doesn't like the people that aren't willing to put in the effort. (mind you, I tried and still failed). Passing his class means you really know your stuff.
THE LANGUAGE BARRIER! His writing is not very good either! His tests are reasonable, thats why I dont mind him. He tries to help you if you need (though its still not clear..) I havent seen him mocking students, but sometimes he ignores them.
Joseph isn't too bad. You should keep up with the homework and not be afraid to ask questions from him or the math center. He doesn't seem to be very approachable but just ask for help anyway. For those who say he's a jerk or mean are the ones that aren't on top of their work.
Joseph was really awesome in class, he gives lots of examples, and really lets you know what to expect. anyone who complains about him is lazy, he is a remarkably good instructor, and very helpful during office hours. I tried to get him for 112 but no such luck! Take his class if you can
He is a great teacher. He knows how to teach and what he teaches is what he asks on his tests. i wish i could take him for math112, but i heard that he is leaving UCFV.

This man was unreasonable. It's been a couple years since I took his class and he's still the worst teacher I've ever had. Before taking his class I did fairly well in math and now I panic at the simplest of problems. Joseph would openly mock students in class and tell them to go back to kindergarten. And he wondered why no one asked questions!
A tad difficult to understand at times, but gives tons of examples in class that will prepare you for ALL web homework, hand-in homework, and exams. Math is something that some people have to work at every day, so don't take a lazy student's word for it; it's not Joseph's fault that they do poorly.
it might have been that i just took 110, but i found his class way easier than my last 110 class. he had his own notes and let us have a the formulas from the text as a cheat sheet during our tests. his writing is a little hard to read sometimes and he himself is a little hard to understand with his accent, but all in all it was a good class.
He was a great teacher. Was very funny and made class interesting. If your good at math take this class because its relatively easy and he makes fun of dumb students (who are not you)
Great :)
He is unfair. He picks on certain students, while lets others do whatever they want!
Excellent no surprises on test, if you study you will get an B or higher guaranteed
is very clear in what he expects. he gets a bad rep but if you do the homework then you should do fine. His quizzes and tests are based on the homework he assigns
Nice guy, no tricks, clear in what he expects of you and will help you if you ask. Do the web assign and look over your notes after class and you should be able to get a good grade.Everything is super reasonable, don't skip classes!
I had Joseph Yu for my business 162 class(Finance math). His quizzes were fine because they were straight from the homework pretty much. However he did not prepare us well enough for the final, we didnt even have a review class,I saw questions worded in ways I hadnt seen before so it was very frustrasting. The final brought my grade down to a C.
if you want to pass the course with a good grade, just do the homework he assigns, and be prepared for the quizzes. His exams come from quizzes and hw for sure.
very hard to understand and moves very quickly, if u ask a question it seems like he would look at you like your dumb because even if the question is simple to him, the student may not understand and thats the purpose of asking is to get students to understand the work, i will never take another class with him
So hard to understand, stay away from him just my two cents
Honestly the worse prof i've ever had, hes pretty rude to you if you ask a question he makes you feel dumb and ignores the left side of the class. Don't sign up for him waste of 400 dollars and GPA killer.
Stay far far away, he is a hard marker and can't teach. The homework taught me more than he did.
really really hard to understand, not much textbook used at all all of its online.
Yeah I had him last year too and he was pretty brutal, he definately killed my GPA so I advise you guys to stay away from his first year Math classes since hes pretty bad to understand. He also treats you like a idiot if you ask a question.
I remember having joseph for math 111, was really straight forward with what he expected you to know. Tests were really fair, so if you studied well you would have a good opportunity to do to get an A. I finished with an A- and I came out of highschool math 12 with a C+. So Joseph is definitely worth the time and money.
I loved his style of teaching, no handouts, all his notes are done on the white board and he gave plenty of examples to questions which were similar to those on exams. What more do you want. He gets the material across clearly, and as a result if you study you'll do well for sure. Also no surprises on tests. Plus his accent is easily understandable
I found this class good,he does plenty of examples which prepares you well, and of course you have to practice a lot on your own. I was able to get an A. His exam questions were not too hard, but pretty decent.
Had him a long time ago for math 112. He's a good overall professor. I'd rate him 4/5. I liked math 112 better than 111.
Good teaching style, fair tests and good examples in class. I have heard grumblings about his accent being hard to understand for some people so if you find linguistics a challenge from that aspect another prof may be a better choice. On the flip side he is always willing to help and very prompt when responding to emails.. Would recommend
Not good at all, he seems nice to some students and can be rude to many others.
Very good at teaching the material - goes over a ton of practice problems in class, and the homework programs is thorough and reasonable. Midterms and final are very straightforward - I guarantee if you do all the homework, you can get an A. Also, he is a fair marker - gives part marks even if the answer is wrong.
Joseph is really nice. The only problem with him could be the accent. Everything else is perfect. Had him and got A+ this semester.
Super straight forward prof. You show up to every class (EVERY CALL people, don't skip even one day- it's so hard to catch up in math), do all the questions, and keep up... and you'll do well :) If you ask for help he'll help you until you get the concept... but you have to ask!!
if you're looking for a straightforward teacher he's the one. his entire curriculum is example based which is the best way to learn in my opinion. his homework is exactly like his tests so there will never be any surprises. he's also vary clear in his explanations. definitely a good teacher to take for math.
Guidelines: sit in the front cause u can't see what he is writing. He make you feel stupid for asking a question. He never really ends up answering the question. Hard to understand the content because there is no explaination. Be prepared to teach urslef trough math xl but quizzes are direct and midterms are from quizzes and homework
Despite the subject (business calculus) I thought Joseph was a great prof. Weekly tests, but his exams are based on these tests. Some times went a little fast during his lectures but if you asked he would slow down and was happy to explain questions. Overall i would take him again.
If you want an easy class, don't take calculus. Joseph is a great prof. Patient and helpful. Quizzes every week, but they're based off the homework. His accent is easy to understand, his examples are helpful. Show up to class and work hard, that's all there is to it. Find an older edition textbook online (free). We didn't use the assigned one.
He is so willing and happy to help. He's explained the same problem to me multiple times because I wasn't getting it. This class is really hard, but that's not his fault. If you don't want to work, don't take calculus. Quizzes and tests are based off homework, so study it and you'll be fine.
Good teacher, I found him very clear and he really tried to help his students get a good grade. I never expected to get a high A in Calculus. Show up for class, do the online work, study the quizzes he gives you and the class is a breeze
Joseph is a great prof. he teaches a tough course so a lot of the criticisms of him are about his course and not him as a teacher. Joseph is a really nice guy, very patient, and certainly knows what he's doing. he demands respect at all times so if you come to class on time and don't leave in the middle he will be your friend. good prof
BEST FIRST YEAR PROF EVER! SOOO UNDERSTANDING AND AMAZING! I LOVE HIM
Was eager to have Joseph from reading the reviews on here, but was disappointed. Very short temper, encourages you to ask questions but gets angry when you do so. Recommend sitting near front of class so you can actually see what he's writing. Wouldn't take another course with him if I can help it.
He was the best prof ever, nice feedback, easy exam, easy quiz, nice explaination
I think Joseph is a fantastic person but a poor math teacher. He has a very good understanding of the material but definitely does not explain the problems at all. He just does a million examples on the white board and expects you to understand how to do them after an hour and a half lecture. I taught myself the entire class through the textbook.
Pretty good prof in general. Make sure you do the web assignments he gives. His tests aren't too crazy hard but he covers the material gone over in class pretty thoroughly, so make sure you know everything before you go into the test. Nothing gives you will surprise you if you'd make sure you understand and do your homework
I found Joseph's approach very practical. Be prepared to go over plenty of examples in class, starting with the basics and evolving into more advanced applications. Joseph is always available by email, and has office hours and Math Centre hours available - use them! If you keep up with homework and proactively ask questions, you'll earn the A.
Excellent professor. Moves at a good pace.
Joseph is a math prof for math students. If you have a solid foundation you won't have any trouble, but if your math skills are rusty prepare for a lot of hard work. He moves fast and is not always the best at communicating concepts clearly. Sit up front, as his whiteboard notes can be hard to read. His tests are tough, but he's a generous marker.
I liked how well organized his class was, we were never in a rush to learn. His system of constantly reviewing old material at the beginning of the class was very helpful. Quizzes were once a week and were marked and reviewed in depth the next class, which also made a big difference. He has a slight accent but his english is fine and I had no issue
Joseph is an average math teacher. My only issues with him were that his writing is very messy, is difficult to understand with his accent, and often doesn't fully explain what he is doing.
He is very responsible and gives detailed feedback. His explanation is very easy to understand. Would like to take his class again.
Best math teacher ever ^^
Joseph is an alright professor, he expects you be quite proficient in the prerequisite knowledge required for the course. He is a little difficult to understand at first, and his writing on the board is very unintelligible. If you take his class: Sit up front, ask questions whenever you are confused, and do a practice problems everyday.
If you think he is bad, you have not met the rest pf the math department at UFV. Very easy, provides clear examples that are all on the midterms and finals. As long as you understand the examples in class and webwork you're guaranteed an A. Most people on here have not yet had an actual bad professor. Gives part marks and makes stuff as easy
JUST SOLVE THE QUES NO MATTERS IF THE STUDENT IS UNDERSTANDING OR NOT ...
Joseph is a phenominal prof. He is probably one of the better math profs in the school as his quizzes are 10x easier than the online homework and in class assignments that he gives you. He prepares you really well for any of his exams. Just like any math class, make sure to do your homework and in class assignments and it will be an easy A.
Prof. Yu is the greatest professor that you could wish for at a university. He offers great advice and provides everything you will need to excel in mathematics. He was a little intimidating in the beginning, but as the course got moving we fell into a well planned rhythm as we learned the theory and applied it with practicals and examples.
Worst math prof I have ever encountered. You can hardly understand what he is saying, let alone what he is writing on the board. Be prepared to get humiliated for asking a question in class. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
Do. Not. Take. This. Prof. Joseph is unapproachable, condescending, and he is fully prepared to humiliate you in class for asking questions. The course was unorganized, did not follow a schedule, and his grading was very unclear and inconsistent. His notes were often incomplete and illegible and the course was very back loaded. periodt
The homework is useful as practicing a lot is really the only way you're going to learn. Be prepared to watch YouTube a lot. Another "professor" that knows their subject inside out, whilst being technologically incapable of teaching an online course. Condescending and spiteful. Meets questions with derision. No helpful feedback on quizzes. AVOID.
He does not provide a good feedback on quizzes and midterms. he has that kind of a rude attitude when you email him about a question and does not provide a clear answer for it. he also has an accent that is hard to understand and a tough grader. AVOID him if you're aiming for an A.
His finals are way too heavy and long. He is a tough grader, save your marks and avoid him. Youtube was more useful than listening to his two-hour lectures without understanding anything. The notes he provided were too hard to read.
This course ruined my semester (it is calc so no big surprise there) but this prof did nothing to make it better. I consistently asked for extra help and if he could recommend specific questions from the book to help with what I was struggling on and the only answer he gave me was to redo the inclass examples. He also yelled at people in lecture so
He is a very bad professor. Don't take him I am warning students who are thinking to take him. Very hard to understand him. He doesn't care about their students. that the student understands or not.
Professor Yu works through the material very fast. There were a few classes where we would talk about 3 new topics in the same class. He isn't very approachable so I didn't feel welcome to ask him questions. I found him very difficult to learn from. He acts like he expects you to know the material when he starts, and doesn't explain it clearly.
He has no regard for his students and gets defensive when students don't understand a concept and/or ask questions. His communication is at the bare minimum and leaves students constantly confused and lost. He is extremely unorganized, told the class we would have no midterm then springs it on us that we will a week before! Do NOT take this class.
Joseph wasn't a bad professor by any stretch, but there is certainly room for improvement. He was uneven in the amount of time spent on certain concepts, and his instruction was not always the clearest. It's evident that he cares about his students, but he can often come across as dismissive in his tone. Take If you did well in highschool calc
He is a okayish professor, sometimes is very rude in emails . Tho he really like to help. He is sometimes very fast and just skims through his notes. The examples he did in class were really good and tests and assignments were easy. He is also a good graders and understands students problems
Great Professor. Amazing way of teaching
Lectures have no correlation to any quiz or homework. Marks awfully. Can't have any worse communication. If you sign up for a math class and see this guy as your instructor, drop out bro.
Moves very fast through the course material. He isn't clear in his points. Save your time and money and take another prof.
Awful professor. Very confusing lectures as he was usually speeding through the material and was not very concise with his explanations of the concepts. Avoid.
Professor Yu is great teacher who cares about his students. He truly understands his students problems and tries to solve them. However he does not have much patience for those who do not want give an effort. He gives alot of homework online, which is much more difficult to what he puts on quizzes/tests. Exams cover exactly what he teaches.
Dr. Joseph Yu assigns homework twice a week that keeps you on your toes and forces you too engage. Although sometimes challenging to understand his handwriting along side the fast pace content, Joseph is always opens to questions and will continuously ask the class to stop if him anything is unclear. I highly recommend to take Dr. Joseph Yu.
Joseph made calculus a nightmare for me. He expects too much from first-year students. He just gives the questions and answers most of the time and just says we should be able to do it. Not caring about his students at all. DO NOT TAKE HIM UNLESS YOU ARE A MATH GENIUS
What I really loved about Joseph was that his midterms and quizzes were exactly like his notes. This made studying really nice since you had an idea what was on the tests. I found myself dozing off sometimes. However, he makes his lectures nice and simple, just straight to the point. His writing is a bit messy but you get used to it later on!
Does not encourage students, in fact he always suggests people to drop out Expects you to know everything before hand and is condescending and gets annoyed if you struggle. Does not posts notes so you need to make sure u are present every class to take them. Has little patience Messy writing Makes frequent mistakes in notes and examples. Sad man
Don't take him if you are just behind credits . This guy is himself confused and will make you believe that you should leave studies. He will teach you all good till midterm and then all of the sudden there would be a huge turnover in the way he teaches , he'll try to skip parts saying "ehh you know that right " .
I had to withdraw for personal reasons, and the new prof I have for MATH141 is way easier to understand and also puts way easier questions on the tests/quizzes. I would suggest looking for a different prof but he's fine if it's your only option.
He's nice but is not the greatest in connecting with his students. Goes through material quickly and attempts to make sure that you know what's being taught, but is not great at explaining concepts. His exams are primarily based on weekly in class quizzes, so if you feel comfortable with that material you'll be fine. Responds fast to emails though.
Never ever take this professor, you can't understand his accent and half of our class got F.
This course is not hard; it's all basic calculus topics, but this man's ego is through the roof, especially for someone who's teaching a basic calculus level course.
midterms are the same as quizzes which are the same as the notes. Not great at explaining concepts attendance isn't super important just show up to write the quizzes and you will be fine. Way better than my previous math prof best advice is to not give up when you get a bad grade on a quiz just study harder for the midterm.
Refreshing and pretty methodical teaching. Joseph is sometimes hard to understand, but if you review the notes/follow along questions in class, you'll be fine. Class was lecture then quiz on last weeks lecture. HW 30m-1h Would do review on topics based on what students got wrong on quizzes. You get out of this class what you put into this class.
Very easy grader, just try to keep up with weekly lectures and quizies. Midterms are very similar to quizzes and assignments. Sometimes there are repeated questions.
Better than other professions at ufv
