The thing with premed classes is that your grade is not linearly correlated with the amount of effort you put in. Putting in a good effort should easily get you a B. However, getting an A requires exponentially much more effort. 171 is conceptually easy, but is still hard to get a good grade in because the class is setup to weed out premeds.

Although it's time consuming, I feel like the flipped structure of this class really helped me learn the material, and once I developed a good schedule it wasn't bad at all. Be prepared to dedicate a lot of time to learning outside of the classroom and use all the resources they give you. Dr K was great during OH so I definitely recommend those.

Much of the fault with BIO 171 is the course structure which is out of Kurdziel's hands (too an extent), that being said the lectures (ALS) were not an efficient use of time and much of her teach was spent on the wrong things. Be prepared to spend as much time learning how to take their tests as you do learning the material.

Kurdziel is definitely knowledgable on the material she's teaching but she just has a bad attitude and makes you feel dumb if you have a question. She doesn't actually teach anything, you have to watch lectures from another semester on your own time and then all you do is talk through practice problems in lecture. Exams were hard for no reason.

Course is a heavy workload with a flipped classroom style but if you stay on top of things you'll be fine. I got a D on the first exam and managed to boost my grade back up to an A- so it's doable.

Professor Kurdziel was an okay professor, pretty easy courseload, however I felt like the work was pointless. Lectures were all made accessible on zoom, which made lectures easy to catch up on. iClicker was mandatory.

I hated this class. the questions on the quizzes had too many possible answers, the questions seemed like she was trying to make them harder than needed, and taught information that contradicted what I learned in my physiology course. too few questions on the quizzes. lectures were rants not actually teaching information. Do NOT take this class

She only practices problems during the lecture, and she's great at explaining them. She also reviews some difficult concepts occasionally, but that's usually enough. Most of the time, I just put more effort into watching the pre-lecture materials.

This class was alright. It had some interesting topics, but the course itself lacked any engagement. Our "exams" are online quizzes that are open note, but they are timed, and questions are written in a way that are meant to trip you up.

One day, around 90% of us answered an iClicker question correctly, This woman proceeded to explain this singular question for almost 30 minutes. Every classmate I talked to after was so confused after her explanation. That is a good summary of Professor Kurdziel. Also, do not ask her any questions during lecture, she is just going to belittle you.

Dr. Kurdziel is knowledgable and has experience in teaching it. ALS is definitely helpful w the questions and her explanation of hard topics be prepared to learn most of the class yourself which is expected of you so just be prepared for ALS. And don't ask dumb questions in office hours, she doesn't always respond so nicely to that.

You just genuinely learn nothing in lecture. Go through Iclicker questions all of class and aren't taught anything that comes up in the lecture videos. Students definitely confused when only 36% of the class gets a question correct.

I really enjoyed this class and she was always willing to answer questions! She does have a bit of an attitude at times, but if you look past that, she's a great gal. Office hours were helpful and most of exam stuff is all pre lecture-based. ALS is helpful, go to it!

Flipped classroom, so you have to watch lecture videos on your own, so prepare to do a decent amount of watching, reading, and taking notes outside of lecture. Content isn't terribly difficult. Weekly quizzes. Exams are fine, thought they varied quite a bit in difficulty. Kurdziel can be a bit unapproachable, but overall gets the job done.

Flipped class with 2+ hours of lecture videos to watch each weekend. Kurdziel doesn't teach just goes over Iclickr questions then gives minimal explanations because "you should know that from the lectures." Content isn't the most challenging. Can get a good grade without going to ALS as long as you practice and do the Iclickr questions.

Doesn't actually lecture in class; she's using Dr. Duffy's lectures from a few years back. Be prepared to (like other students have been saying), watch 2+ hours of lecture every weekend and do a weekly quiz. If you don't like the flipped classroom structure, you will struggle in this class. Beware, exam questions are meant to trick you.

Anyone complaining just didn't like the classroom structure. Dr. Kurdziel was a great lecturer and she explained the iclicker questions extremely well in class. Iclicker questions are improtant and reflect tests so being in lecture to hear the explanations will be useful. She is accessible outside of class as well. This is a flipped classroom.

She's nice but the exams are ridiculous, they cover the tiniest details and every question is a trick. She lets you bring a blue book but its lowkey useless. Way too many tricks for an intro class. Also flipped classroom is awful, no one wants to watch 2+ hours of lecture every Sunday. Class is 3x/week and all she does is iclicker.

Any students who say people don't like her due to the class structure have too much time on their hands. I understand that exam preparation is very important, but there is a difference between studying and teaching myself the entire course load. I am not paying 30k+ a year to be taught by videos. Frankly ridiculous. Also extremely condescending.

I have always enjoyed bio but not with her. She used old lecture videos which was majority just more clicker and sometimes I wonder if she actually knew what the lectures were teaching. Anyhow, exams were tricky and even if you knew your bio, it would come down to if you can guess correctly. Every time you think you did good, it was a worse grade.

The content is literally not the issue at all with this class; it is the exams. Questions are purposely meant to trick you, no matter how hard you know or study the content. The 3 hours spent a week in lecture do not teach you the content. Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. Find another professor to take this class with.

The class is a flipped classroom, which is just annoying imo to have 3ish hours of work outside of class (minimum), 3 one-hour lectures, plus 90-min discussion per week. It's a pretty heavy workload (more than usual for a 4-credit course). Dr. Kurdziel is a pretty clear lecturer, but her test questions can be written with the intent to mess you up.
