He's witty and funny. Good teacher overall, but there is a lot of HW and stuff expected of you.

He's the best english teacher i've ever had.. he makes this stuff fun! i took this class already from another teacher and i hated it, but he makes it fun and exciting, cuz he is so excited about it. there is a lot of reading, but not too bad. take him if you can, even if you dont need the class.

THe homework in this class is nto hard, you write like 5 essays, and they are double space. WHenever her corrects your paper, he will tell you what could make it better, abd what is good about it. He likes to joke, and he is so funny. I have really enjoyed this class. Totally reccomend him.

He was one of my first professors at BYU-I and I enjoyed his class very much, even if it was at 8 am! I was pretty well educated in English writing and such before this course, but his class helped further my writing skills (especially argumentation, which I wasn't too good at before!). Extremely funny, very fair in grading, and wants to help his students as much as possible. Word to the wise: sometimes he gives extra points for being on time! I definitely recommend Bro. Allen! :-)

Took this class to fulfill my creative writing emphasis without any real expectation of learning anything new since I'd taken upper division classes already. I was pleasantly surprised to gain many new insights. I enjoyed my time in class greatly and found the projects to be to the point and useful. I highly recommend this teacher for this clas.

I got a C in the class because I had to leave town for a while and got behind, but that's not a reflection on the teacher. Brother Allen was the most interesting English teacher I've had. He kept the class interesting and he gave real assignments rather than just busy work. Pick him if you really want to learn something.

He doesn't seem to like you unless you are an A/B student in his class, which takes more effort than I was willing to expend considering my other classes/priorities.

Very challenging, but in a good way. Probably the most helpful and practical professor I've had. Creates effective, independent learning environments, but also very willing to coach students with whatever they need help with. I have to work very hard with his classes, but they are the most rewarding.

Brother Allen is amazing! I have taken two classes from him and will be taking a third. His class is difficult because it is college class and that is how college is supposed to be. Brother Allen is an extremely proficient teacher. He makes you a better writer and is willing to help you if you are struggling. His grading system allows you to better yourself and not just get an A because you did the work. I didn't connect with his personality even though I agreed with his ideologies, so that made the class difficult for me.

A spectacular teacher. He is extremely well-read and knowledgeable, yet also incredibly affable. Quick to observe where a student is academically,and always knowing what a student needs to hear, he continually goes above and beyond what is expected. Without doubt he is one of the greatest teachers I've ever had the opportunity to learn from.

I did not have him as a teacher but the teacher I did have on line used Brother Allen's recorded lectures for Eng 335. I really enjoyed his lectures and learned a lot about the topics we were studying.

Motivates students by creating a desire within them to learn and become better. I loved this about him because oftentimes teachers motivate by points. He is extremely knowledgable, funny, not uptight, and creative. He makes good assignments that are relevant to course and helps you learn incredibly well. One of the best teachers I've had.

Brother Allen has the right idea about teaching.

He's a great teacher, I learned a lot, but he is a really hard grader. I felt like it was impossible to get an A on anything. All of the tests he grades in front of you and he'll say all the great things and then he'll notice one little thing and give you a B. Seriously, super discouraging. I enjoyed him as a person, just not his grading style.

Bro Allen is hilarious. He's probably my favorite teacher I've taken an English class from. He genuinely cares about the students and really wants to help them. The workload can be stressful for this class (there's a HUGE project) but you learn a TON. We spent little time on copy editing--remember the content editing steps and apply them.

Bro Allen is awesome! So smart and really helped me understand concepts that made me a better writer. If you want your writing to improve take him and take lots of notes. Funny, Smart, Helpful, Nerdy, GREAT!

Don't take ENG 318 from anyone other than Bro. Allen. I was on waitlists for two years to be able to attend this course, and was not disappointed in the slightest. He knows exactly how to encourage you to become a better writer and produce superior pieces. He loves conferencing with his students and genuinely cares about your personal success.

Bro. Allen makes english interesting and applicable to life. He is very upbeat and hilarious. There are only 3 papers and 2 quizzes a week on the reading material and no exams. The students first grade your papers and then he will increase or decrease that grade. He is extremely helpful when talking to him in his office.

Bro. Allen is a genius and he makes his lectures interesting. Theres a quiz at the beginning of every class with extremely specific questions,making it mandatory to do in depth reading(cant just skim the chapters) & to attend class,as you cannot make up the quizzes. He will always meet with you to help with papers. You get the grade you work for.

Take his class! I've never liked English class but he made it so interesting and fun. Stay on top of the reading and you'll be fine. Only assigned 3 papers and gives a million chances to get an "A" on every paper. As long as you stay caught up you'll get an A

This class is basically a mini-intership and is difficult beyond belief by no fault to Brother Allen, the nature of the class makes it difficult. He makes the class a good experience and provides immense amounts of help and direction. By far the best professor I have ever taken

Brother Allen is super experienced with the professional writing world. If you are actually going to work professionally with your English degree, I would advise taking one of his classes. Every assignment is meant to help you be prepared to do well in the real world. The workload starts out heavy and lightens gradually throughout the semester.

Brother Allen gives a great introduction to creative writing. He is a fiction writer, so while he does explore some aspects of poetry and briefly touches on creative nonfiction, but this class primarily deals with fiction and the elements of good fiction writing. His lectures are fun and engaging and he gives honest, helpful feedback.

Allen structures the class so the hardest projects are at the beginning of the semester. This requires a content edit of an actual book done as a group project. I learned a lot and I'm glad I took the class. I wish Allen's feedback had been more comprehensive and with less peer-review stuff because peers aren't always helpful.

Brother Allen is an awesome teacher. His classes are so helpful for the real world and he really cares for his students to succeed. He requires you do a lot of work but it is so worth it to work hard.

Brother Allen is so great! His class is well-organized, and he times every class period down to the moment. Don't miss classes; everything is on the test. Know his wording because a little misinterpretation could be harmful on the test. We all learned how to write stories and give good feedback. He loves funny stories and sarcasm. Highly recommend!

Brother Allen is an amazing teacher! Lectures are fun to listen to and help you gain a deeper understanding of the material needed in writing papers. He breaks things down making writing easier rather than having a whole paper due in a week he brakes it down into 3 papers the whole semester breaking those papers into smaller sections.

Professor Allen is hands-down the BEST teacher at this school. TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM! You won't regret it. He's amazing, and you will learn so much. He really makes English interesting, and a lecture from him is NEVER boring. He really cares about his students, and he is absolutely hilarious.

Really fascinating in-class lectures, super accessible outside class (sometimes class is cancelled for one-on-one student meetings), really constructive feedback on all aspects of papers. 3 papers over the semester. Learned more than usual in a class like this.

Brother Allen is a great English teacher. If you really want to learn how to write an argumentative essay, take this class from him. This class isn't easy though, the three papers you will write are worth almost your entire grade, and they are graded harshly. I recommend him, but be prepared to work hard in this class.

Best Professor ever! I learned so much from him, not only about writing, but about life. He changed the way i think about everything. Very caring and want to help the student. Brother Allen is hilarious! I enjoy professors that don't have to be serious all the time. He tries to get to know his students so he can help them. Go to class! Read the chapters! Quizzes are on the reading and make sure you attend the workshops. Don't procrastinate on your papers because he gives you plenty of time and you'll regret waiting.

Full disclaimer: Brother Allen is a fabulous teacher/discussion leader. He's very passionate and engaging: like, attendance wasn't even required and our class was always packed. However, your grade really banks on a few projects, so that's terrifying. And he's a little inconsistent with giving quizzes! Also holy heck, I had to buy so many books!!

Amazing. I can't say enough good things. I hate writing and I am not that great at it, but after this class my writing improved imensely. He actually teaches you how to write well, not just give the assignment and let you go at it. Only 3 papers for the semester and class time is given for peer editing. He is funny and makes writing not horrible.

This class was a lot of work, but Brother Allen made it enjoyable. There are 3 papers through the semester, and he gives you pretty clear instructions on how to write them. He makes himself available so that you can get help on your essay before you turn it in, and that was helpful. I learned a lot, would recommend!

great teacher, gives really good feedback on papers and teaches the criteria really well. kind of opinionated, sometimes brings politics into class,and he'll let you know his political party, which doesn't really have anything to do with what we're learning. kind of inappropriate considering I took him in fall 2020. other than that a great teacher.

I loved everything about this class from Brother Allen. He knows what he's talking about, and you will learn so much from him. There is a daily journal you need to keep up with, but he is an easy grader and never requires too much of you. Definitely my favorite professor I've ever had.

Bro. Allen was an AMAZING prof. He is so smart, kind, and just and incredible teacher. He was so respectful and I feel like I learned SO MUCH from his class. He is a hard grader and there are about 4 or 5 papers, but you have a lot of creative freedom with them. I had to work my butt off to get As, but I would take it again with him anyway.

He is super funny and very caring. All of his lectures are amazing and insightful. My only advice is to take very detailed notes! Don't skip class because it will hurt you A LOT when taking the exams. Lots and lots of writing so be prepared for that. He is so understanding and wants all of his students to succeed! Brother Allen is my all-time favorite professor. He's hilarious and truly cares about helping students develop a love for literature and creativity. His tests are all based on class discussions, so if you're not there, you won't have what you need to get good grades on the test. He never fails to inspire you to think big! 10/10 would recommend!

This class requires 3 pages of writing a day, a journal. This is what killed me. Other than that, I really enjoyed the class and what I learned. Highly recommend.

Class was Awesome, professor was good, Overall class was very low stress. Only 4 total papers and 1 project! but the papers are a big part of your grade so if you score low then you're toast. Also, his requirements are vague so it's difficult to try to figure out writing assignments. awkward to interact with (unless he likes your topic).

Brother Allen is a great creative writing teacher! You have to write three pages in a creative writing journal every single day of the week, so if you don't want to do an absolute ton of writing, don't take his class. But if you want to improve your writing skills, you've got to work for it and Brother Allen will %100 be your cheerleader.

I didn't think that the workshops with other students were super helpful, but going in for office hours with him were great. He's a published author, so ask him lots of questions!
