Dude, this guy is the man, hge knows what he is talkign about and can go off subject about non linear subjects. I recommend for anyone to take him who wants to learn to about film. Alot of enthusiasm
Greatest prof. I've had by far...absolutely love both him and his class...def should take a class with him
He's a funny guy..the class is ok!! But the quizs are kinda hard and the midterm as well~
He is a nice teacher. he very well knows what he is talking about, gives good lecture. basically for his class: come to class everyday, take good notes, watch the films taht are required and read the text(s). His quizes are hard when you do not read the text, but when you read the text, his quizes are moderate. Good to take him.
hes a goof teacher but his tests are really hard and tricky take film with another teacher
Awesome professor!! He's the guy you'll remember 20 years from now when you're out making a film. Teaches in a workshop style, which is so wonderful. He is not concerned with textbooks and making his students read about the history of screenwriting. He makes students go out and do it instead, offering great critism and help along the way.
Great teacher! Makes things clear and easy to understand.
He's a great professor but his quizzes are hard if you do not read the text. Just attend the classes, watch the films (most of them not all that great but there are some good ones), and read the text.
Professor Grumet is awesome! He is alot of fun and has a great passion for what he is teaching. Yes, there was alot of work due for this class, but he is an extremely fair grader. In all honesty there is no way to do poorly if you come to class and talk.
prof grumet is definitely lenient and easygoing... but go to his class or you'll be sorry! exams and quizzes are quite easy. we basically watched lots of little movie clips and went over terminology.
Seems like a cool guy with cool outlook/opinions. Tests are demanding but not impossible, picks interesting films to watch. Good sense of humor. There is a weird aggressive quality about him that is a bit offputting and not really understood. But good class.
Awesome teacher...great personality, easy to talk to, very interested in student's ideas, etc.
very chill professor, relaxed and fun classroom. quizzes are difficult so IMDB the movies before them and you'll be fine..pay attention to names and dates.
This guy hate to talk to the students and teaches absolute BS. I hated him even though he gave me an A-. If you want to get ok grade, take his class but if you want to get some respect, don't!
he is a brilliant guy, ill give him credit. he expects you to work for your grade... to do well on the quizzes, you must study the chapters. his quizzes are fair, though. the problem is, he treats his students disrespectfully, and that irritates me. its film. i took it for the GER. i dont care about the subject as much as he expects me to.
Kind of a hard potato but overall not bad. Knows his stuff.
At first I got on his bad side and he really disliked me, but the trick to him is to participate as much as possible. Do this by simply reading the assigned chapter before the class, or keeping the book open on the desk and flipping to the right page when he asks some stupid, specific question. He's unjustifiably pretentious but harmless.
I went to three of the movie screeninfs and got B+ in his class. He's very knowledgeable about film and what not. The quizzes are unnecessarily difficult and based on specific minutae from the book. I recommend his class... not an easy A, but definitely worth while
Grumet is a great professor. He's pretty laid back and wants his students to do well. Just do the readings (or even read the summaries online) and you'll be fine. His quizzes are not hard at all and he lets you know when they're going to be so you can prepare.
The course was fun and the Grumet is very knowledgeable. The class is pretty cut and dry in terms of work, show up, READ the books (I made the mistake of not reading) and participate. And the choice of Vietnam war films was captivating. He's totally sparked my interest in it.
He gives a quiz every week on the material from the chapter..not too bad. Pay attention in class, the information he talks about is usually on the quizzes. If you're a film major, you'll love it. If you're looking for a class to fill a requirement, take film.. It's better than an art history or theater class. The teacher himself is alright..
sNO NO NO. Test are stupid - he picks unnecessary complicated questions on the book; he explains chapter for about 10 minutes.he likes participating but u almost got no chance - he likes talk himself. can not teach at all. don't waist ur time..
Rude. Arrogant. Egotistical. Weekly quizzes with lots of useless information. He treats his students like children. He is a control freak - which is one of the worst qualities to have in a teacher. Take FILM101, but try to take it from someone else. He's really an unpleasant person.
I never attended the lecture and got a 100 on every single test. I read the book cover to cover though. He wasn't my favorite person in terms of his personality but that didn't stop the class from being interesting. From what I understand he's a better alternative to the other film 101 professor. I'd still take the class over again.
Not a very good teacher, quizzes are awful. However, the classes are usually pretty easy. The classes themselves are pretty tough to sit through, however. Take him if you want a good grade and have a strong constitution.
Good Prof. Helped me a lot. I was having hard time. Met with me and went over the material. Very patient.
Good prof. Wentover material very carefully. Met with me and helped me a lot. Very patient.
Class, not so great. Gives a quiz almost everyweek & he doesnt go over much in class. The txt book is a MUST. His class is monotonous. He's unpredictable sometimes he can be helpful other times a bit grumpy. His quiz questions can be unclear. I got an A, but had to work hard for it. The movies watched were pretty cool. I dont really reccomend him.
Not the most exciting professor out there and can be moody. Attendance, textbook material knowledge and participation are a must. Quizzes and exams are not easy at all and very detailed. Ended up being much harder A than I was hoping for. Study a lot and participate in discussions and you will do fine.
Grumet overall is a great teacher, really nice and helpful guy. Might seem tough at first but he's just passionate about his subject- just be sure to participate in class discussion! He is a meticulous grader, but if you work hard it shouldn't be an issue. Plus the quizes are super easy, and the lowest grade is dropped. I Highly reccomend.
Nice guy, teaches in a way where you couldn't fall asleep even if you wanted to. Class is perfect for movie buffs. Textbook is a must, study as hard as you can because the quizzes and exams are very detailed. If he sees you do well through out the semester, and you attend class, he'll def go easy on you. Started with a B-, worked my way up to an A.
Maybe it was the first day, but I wasn't too crazy about this professor so far. First of all, how the hell do you take notes while seeing a movie in the dark. I must have thought that he was crazy. The class feels rather dreadful. I hope that it gets better as the semester passes.
Loved Grumet, wished he taught more classes... You can tell he really cares about his subject. I changed my major because of him. Stay on top of the texts and you'll do fine.
I was wrong about him, he seems to be a nice guy. However the problem with the class is that there is a lot of reading. He doesn't really write much notes, so it would be better to use the textbook as a way to take notes instead.
While I will admit that a lot of the material taught in this class is very redundant to my other film classes, but the professor is accomadating to other students needs.
I will admit that his quizzes feel more like exams and the midterm is more like a final exam. Even though he gave a study guide to study for, it felt more like a final exam study guide to me.
I also agree that his quizzes often are tricky and I feel as though what he covers in class is on them. He does tend to a bit snotty and stuck up when students ask for help. He writes practically nothing in less. He is okay and somewhat friendly but not the best either.
I had Grumet for both Media 180 and Film 101. He's extremely engaging and knowledgeable. I see some of the reviews of him are very negative and it boggles my mind. I found him to be a pleasure. He's also clearly a movie buff. My advice: participate in class, a lot.
While he is not one of the greatest teachers around, he certaintly isn't the worst either. while i will admit that it is good that he is a film buff and all, but he is not really that helpful. there is hardly any notes on the board. he sometimes tend to give an attitude which irks me. the quizzes are not really that easy.
I love this professor..If you participate it is a real pleasure..the quizzes and tests weren't the easiest but he is a fairly easy grader so even if you think you did badly chances are you didn't.Participating and engaging in the class is the biggest plus ever; he appreciates it a lot--can make you one of his favorites
for tests--we get all the possible questions...so it becomes the students fault if you do poorly.if you read the textbook then youre fine. a lot is common sense and it is reviewed in lecture and discussion. theres extra credit on exams and quizzes. hes realllyy helpful. just ask. and participate a lot!
I feel as though when I am studying for this class, it feels as though you are studying blind since it is not always easy to figure out what you are studying for. Despite his best efforts to help, he seems a little distant at times.
He is great and helpful, just make sure you read, i made that mistake and paid for it. He is a good guy and will try to help you. His enthusiasm is great for an entry level film class. Aand he does love film.
I feel that the biggest problem that I had in his class, was that despite telling the class what would be on the quizzes and midterm, it felt as though a lot of the stuff was not really on it. The final feels more culmitative and very hard. He is okay for his knowledge in film, but not much good as a teacher.
I felt that I had to really hard to get the B- in the class, since I felt that he was rather hard to comprehend.
I was actually wrong about him. He actually is a decent guy, but I still found the class to be a bit hard.
He was pretty easy. His lectures were straight forward and offered his own historical insight to the concepts. If you read the book and come to class and actually pay attention to the films the quizzes and tests are fairly simple.
I won't say that he is easy since the quizzes can be a little tricky at times. However he does love his movies and his passion shows. He even gives a concept review sheet for the midterm and final. The films aren't always interesting but it is a decent class.
Grumet is knowledgeable in film and you can tell. Disorganized when it comes to notes so be sure to listen. Quizzes are easy if you read the textbook which is a must. When it comes to midterms and finals, make sure you study hard because Grumet grades strictly and wants to know every detail! Dislike how he treats students with biased viewpoint.
I will admit that Grumet is indeed passionate about film and knowledgeable. However to a certain extend, I do agree that he can be a bit disorganized at times. The quizzes were not all that easy and a lot of the info comes from the textbook. The midterm and final is even more intense.
Prof. Grumet's class is a snorefest. The films are interesting but his lectures are not. Take your own notes and read the textbook and you'll do fine on the quizzes. One complaint is that he'll sometimes put obscure pieces of information onto quizzes. But there's extra credit at least. Straightforward class, decent professor.
I do agree that films in Grumet's class was interesting but I will admit that his lectures were rather hard to grasp. I found his quizzes and exams to be a bit of challenge. He is a decent person but not the greatest professor around.
The quizzes are really vague. His advice on the quizzes are even more vague. I was initially confident for the first quiz after he advised that if we "just know about auteur theory" we would be "fine". Well, no. All I did was study auteur theory and he had (at most) 2 questions about it. It also seems that 3/4 of the lecture is fluff and jokes.
The thing about Grumet's quizzes is that they do tend to be rather vague and I think they come from the textbook. He also tends to wear the same clothes all the time as well. His Midterm is almost like a final exam in itself. He can also be a bit rude at times as well.
Passionate, knowledgeable, accessible. Definitely plan on taking upper level classes with him. I find the quizzes simple if you're doing the reading. The midterm was a little vague. He does go on tangents but I find them interesting. Anytime lectures are unclear he's happy to answer Qs. Overall a stimulating class (given that you like film ...)
Very passionate teacher who loves Film but he can be a bit rude at time and unclear. quizzes can be a little tough and the midterm is like studying for a final exam. Overall the class is not that difficult but it is vital to pay attention.
Must say he is funny and a bit sarcastic which makes the class ok. The movies screened are good. The only negative is that you have to read every single chapter and even if you read it the quizzes tend to be so vague that half of the time you ended up failing the quiz even if you studied. Other than that he is an easy going guy.
I received a 90 on a paper we wrote. He corrected one word that had nothing to do with film, and was based on his personal syntax. At the end he wrote three words -- all positive with connotations. If he did not point out anything wrong with my paper, why did I receive 10 points off? QuizzesAREVague
This guy is amazing! He's very helpful and funny. You just have to read the text book, attend class, watch the movies and you'll get an "A"
A really fun guy who loved film. However I found the quizzes and exams to be rather hard to follow. Despite having a study guide, it was rather lengthy. Wish that the films could have been better.
Fun professor. Tests are straight from the book. As long as you read & take your own notes, you shouldn't have a problem. Info is also repeated during lecture. If you have great attendance, he drops the lowest test score. Take him/this class, especially if you're looking for an easy course to balance out your tough ones. Only one paper assigned.
Will admit that the class wasn't the easiest that I took and the tests were rather confusing at times. Did like the fact that he dropped the lowest quiz grade.
he was not a good ta and even though I got an A ....he made me hate the film class that was overral amazing and stanley is the best
Grumet is a nice decent guy outside the clasroom but he is not really that great of a lecture. It seemed as though the class consisted more of quizzes than actual interesting films. Was surprised that I even passed his class.
If you have any interest or want to learn about film (not to just take care of GER), take Professor Grumet's class. All the films were screened, and the quizzes and tests were fair. Pay attention and participate + read the book and you'll do well.
I personally found this class to be rather tough since the quizzes felt a little tricky to me. It was nice that some of the films watched in class, were rather familar to me.
He's kinda unpleasant in the class room. Quizzes are really tricky and exams detailed (listen to what he says about movies prior to screening and symbolism). If you're interested in film take it, you'll learn a lot if you can stand him.
He can be very unapproachable at times. Stickler for attendance. Loves to trick students on the quizzes (and he wonders why so many do poorly on them). Other than that, his knowledge of film is really impressive. Watched a lot of great movies in his class (only 1 or 2 comedies). If you want to learn all you can learn about film, take Grumet.
He is such a delight. So passionate and knowledgable about the subject. Test and quiz q's never a surprise, he goes over all the material in class. Attendance and participation are a MUST. Had I put even a slight bit more effort in this course, I would have received an A.
I will admit that Josh had a lot of knowledge about film and loved what he did. However I will admit that something needs to be done about that wardrobe. His attitude was also rather unapproachable at times. His quizzes were rather tough despite studying for them. Same goes for the final and midterm which were a challenge.
great professor. he likes participation. attendance is a must. quizzes are not hard if you READ the text efficiently and thoroughly. midterms and finals also require work, not an easy A but an A is very very possible.
I will admit that for an intro course I found it to be a bit tough since the quizzes were not hard but felt a bit tricky. I do agree that the midterm and final were rather tough. However there were films that were rather interresting.
He's a huge film buff with tons of knowledge to share. He's completely approachable, whoever said he isn't must be too used to fake interest from professors. He cares about what he does. Quizzes were pretty hard but the lectures were really great. I like the way he speaks and explains things.
Grumet is just average. He's not the most approachable guy, but he's straightforward on you need to succeed in the class. Just listen to the lectures, take notes, and read the textbook, and you should do fine. Yes every now and then his quizzes are a little tricky, but it shouldn't be too bad.
He's ok as a person but if you're trying to take his class just to fulfill GER, DO NOT TAKE HIM. His weekly quizzes are pretty hard and tricky and unless you're interested in the subjects, you're going to have a hard time. Not that it should be high-school level, but if you're looking for a fair 101 class to fulfil GER, GO SOMWHERE ELSE.
lazy, quizzes and midterms are tricky
I should've listened to all the rater's comments saying how the quizzes were tricky and they were right. He loves participation and he cares about attendance. Not much help when I talked to him. SO, if you not are interested in film or majoring in film, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! I regret taking this class so much.
This class was so easy! Anyone who wasn't doing great on the quizzes wasn't doing the textbook readings (most interesting textbook I had for the semester). I mean, he emails study guides AND adds extra credit questions. If you're into film, it's such an easy class if you get through the lengthy textbook chapters.
This guy is ok. He is a very nice person, although he can be a bit loud and tough at moments. I have to admit, however, his exams are very weirdly worded.
If your not into movies like knowing who the director was and what year it was made. Please dont take this class. Attendance matters!!! U need to be on time or else you will fail! Quiz on every chapter of book, quiz are fairly easy. No homework, you just need to study , show up on time and actually pay attention to every single detail in the movie
A GREAT CLASS! He's not too great at writing notes on the board, but the textbook is really useful. He'll try to trick you on the tests, so pay attention. You can tell he's passionate about film, and he'll really like you if you talk movies with him before class starts. If you talk in class it will bother him - so just be respectful.
Im not going to lie , this is a difficult professor but a great man who has turned out to be my favorite instructor during undergrad so far. He challanges you and in order to do well .. All you have to do is read the textbook and study his review sheet. Read the textbook and go to class , thats it. This professor has helped me to grow as a student.
I appreciate how much he loves film, but this is a lot for a 101 class. A lot of reading, and quizzes are only multiple choice and honestly not really well written. it's also way more of a history class than I expected, which gets really confusing since his notes on the board during discussion aren't really organized ....
This is a class that should be taken during the Winter Semester. When offered as a winter course, you could watch one movie per day instead of breaking up the movies over an extended period. The professor will be upset if you come in late, so do yourself a favour and come on time. He's a nice person, but his notes are a bit unorganised. Cool class.
He is absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. He takes this entry level course way too seriously. He makes our lives 10x harder by giving extremely difficult exams and makes us study more for this one single class than my more important classes. Avoid at all costs
He's a little intimidating but he knows a lot about film. There is a quiz for every chapter in the book which you have to read to get a good grade and you have to participate. The films he chooses are good but don't fall asleep, he'll watches everybody.
Professor Grumet is a cool dude. He knows a lot about cinema and he's really great if you're interested in film. His quizzes and tests are easy but the questions can be worded poorly so watch out. He gives ample extra credit too. Show up, participate, be respectful, and watch the movies; you'll get an A.
Grumet is ok. But you really have to study (Alot) to do decently. His quizes are not particularly hard but theyre worded (very) tricky. You can actually fail. Im worried that this class may drop my average (and i study for all his quizes, read all of his chapters, come everyday..) I heard the head of the department is better and easier
Prof Grumet presents an excellent background of knowledge in film as well as history of the period being discussed. His class lectures are very interesting. The films viewed were terrific choices. I look forward to auditing another class with him.
I dont know what the rest of these comments are talking about, this guys great!! Take your chance with him you wont regret it especially if youre interested in film. Hes very passionate about the subject and most people just go in for an easy A which shouldnt be the case
Yes, hes passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and a good guy w.e. but if you care about your gpa and not this passion DONT TAKE HIM. This is not an easy A class, this is not even an easy B class. I did well on the quizzes, paid attention in class, read the textbook over twice and still couldnt pull an A. He grades harshly on exams!
Charlatan that tries to impose himself as the wisest in the room. More than once complained about lateness in a threatening tone (I kid you not). Quizzes are multiple choice and you will have to memorize random obscure stuff. It takes forever to try to fill in the review sheet because it's not even organized by occurence in the book. Exams are easy
This professor knows A LOT about film. However, this guy gives quizzes in which you have to memorize teeny tiny details to at least pass them. Also, when it comes to lateness and talking in class, he treats his students as if they were in high school. Seriously, everyone in this class is 18+, not kids or teens who need to be told what not to do.
Worst professor I ever took at hunter. Please avoid at all costs
Chapter quiz every week with extra credit on them. You basically have to know obscure facts of the tb. Exams similar to quizzes but with essays and extra credit. He definitely knows his stuff but don't think you're getting an easy A. The final was ridiculously hard in my opinion. If you love film but don't want to kill your GPA take another prof.
Do yourself a favor for your GPA and sanity and don't take Joshua Grumet for Film101 or any class for that matter.
The class itself is durable, but this is the type of class where you heavily rely on the textbook! the professor does NOT care about you or your grades or if you're learning. If it were up to him he would just fail everyone and be proud of himself. Rude attitude towards his students, cuts lectures short, horrible penmanship. Just read the textbook!
Very straightforward and knowledgeable professor, which values clarity in assignments. If you want to have a good grade, get ready to read a lot of material from the textbook. However, if you do so, the quizzes will be very easy to you.
This prof. is one I absolutely wouldn't recommend at all. He treats his students like young teenagers, quizzes you on stuff you'd least expect, and is a very unfair grader. he could be very rude on certain days and he'll call you out on the smallest things in front of the entire class! Highly don't recommend!
I am in my Junior year and Prof Grumet might be the worst professor in my college career. He does not care about his students and is a SUPER tough grader. He counted me off on tests and the final paper just for wording things differently then the lecture stated it. It is hard to know what he wants. He also treats everyone like children.
This professor will make you rethink about coming to school.
For the love of god and all that is sacred dont take this professor. Asks you questions about the smallest things from the textbook for quizzes. If you care about your GPA take another film professor
It is insane that this professor has above a 3.0 rating. First of all, there are much better quality professors who have lower ratings. Second of all, for a class that's 90% movie screenings, the quizzes are mostly based on readings done outside the class. Third, the professor is extremely rude, impatient, and will nitpick any little thing you do.
This professor is one that should be avoided. The way he presents quizzes are ridiculous, and he's a tremendously harsh grader. He really does have an attitude if you walk in late, lacks understanding and empathy, and most of the time he's extremely rude. It's not worth taking his class, especially if you're passionate about film.
The problem with this Prof is not only that he's an extremely harsh grader, but often times he's very rude and doesn't treat college students like adults. He treats students as if they were still in high school. If you love/are passionate/into film, I would look for a different Professor first.
Majority of the tests reflect mundane textbook material learned outside of lectures. Get ready to participate and memorize useless information on your own. Electronics are not permitted either both lectures and discussions.
Grumet was one of the best teachers I've had at Hunter. My advice for everyone who takes Film101 would be that YOU HAVE TO READ THE TEXTBOOK! Grumet held great lectures that will keep anyone's attention and he genuinely cares about what his students have to say. He's funny, knows a lot about film, and just wants his students to succeed! A+
Grumet is one of the professors that I recommend to all of my friends. You have to read the textbook to do well on quizzes and its dry at times, but you can tell that he is very passionate about what he teaches. I also felt that Grumet spoke to us like people and dropped mad life knowledge whenever he could, and it was often hilarious.
Most of his tests are textbooks based. Be prepared to remember the director and the year of release for the movies watch in class. Participation counts, especially during discussions. He is just extremely disrespectful towards most of his students. The way he presented himself made him feel unapproachable. Overall, just a horrible teacher.
Guys! do yourself a favor & don't take this guy. The lectures don't even cover much of whats on the tests. You have to read the old textbook, which is a drag. Even after you read the Textbook, the exams will literally pick the most nit-picky things. He saw the class doing bad on exams, so instead of working with us, he recommended PassNoCredit
I was hesitant to take this class because of the ratings. After taking the course a lot of the comments reflect poorly on him. If you read the book you'll do fine on the multiple choice exams. This is a class where you have to work for your grade. Participation counts(what I have to work on because I'm an overall quiet person). Would recommend!
The word that comes to mind when describing him is: brusque. If you need to be nurtured or coddled, this might not be the class for you- that being said, he is smart as a whip, funny, aware, Irreverent, has clear expectations and tests fairly. Pay attention to names, and read the book and youll do fine. I wish he taught more classes at Hunter!
He thinks you're illiterate if you have never watched Casablanca. Well, Professor Grumet., film is not the center of everyone's life. And if I am a film expert, I wouldn't be taking "Introduction to Film".
I am one semester shy of graduating & this is the most enjoyable class I have ever taken. I found the history & influence of film truly fascinating. Professor Grumet's kindness, respect for others & passion for film has inspired me to to delve into film. Bonus questions ensures one thrives in what I consider to be the most interesting class ever!
Nothing but good things to say about this professor. Thoroughly enjoyed his class.
From my experience with Professor Grumet, it looks like he's taken the criticism he's received on this website in the past into consideration. You no longer need to read the textbook. Sure, he may treat you like you know nothing about film, but that's because you probably don't. This is a class about film history, not your personal favorite films.
He's a great Film professor. You can tell he cares about the students and just wants them to learn. He curses and makes jokes often in class so that will definitely keep you awake for the 3 hour class. There are no assignments or hw, just 3 midterms but be sure to study/review his notes and read the textbook. The films shown in class are good.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. I ignored the other rate my professor reviews and I regret it wholeheartedly. Does not care about his students, does not care about helping you learn, gets hung up on pedantic bs. He pulled me aside after class to scold me for missing a class due to serious illness. Tries very hard to be cool but comes off condescending.
Professor Grumet was truly amazing from the start. He is a very passionate and knowledgable man. I want to be a film major, so I really cared about participation, but if you are just trying to find an easy class without mandatory attendance, then that's not a class for you. Although, he was very empathic and let us do the extra credit assignment.
One of the most well rounded professors I've come across! Really appreciate his insight and analysis, not just in film but in American culture, past and present. Never afraid to show his personality and his lectures were more engaging because of this. Take the class seriously and you will emerge a more cultured individual.
I can honestly say he is absolutely one of the most inspirational and outstanding professors I have ever had. He makes attending lectures enjoyable and is very funny. You can clearly see how passionate he is about film, teaching, and he provides more than enough resources to help you succeed in the class! Tip: Read those materials and the textbook!
He sucks. Extremely boring lectures and often forgets students actually have lives outside of his class. Tests were also unnecessarily difficult. Stay FAR away
