He is a fabulous prof! Definitely one of the best I've had in University. So nice and so helpful and he makes the class interesting! Before I took this course, I knew nothing. Now I can't get enough about the topic. Great class, great prof. He is very fair in his grading. Highly recommended.

Best Professor I have had in my first year at UW. I was compelled to write a review because Dr. Neufeld is organized, approachable, knows the material well and is a great communicator. I truly enjoy his lectures and his teaching style. Unlike other professors he actually seems excited to be teaching. I'm glad I chose Biol140 as my fall elective!

This proffesor is by far my favourite. He does everything he can to make the class interesting and you can tell that he loves what he is talking about. His demonstrations are amazing and you will never forget them. He is extremely approachable and I will definitely look for further classes he teaches just to have him again.

This prof loves what he's doing and is quite active in his field and is young. His teaching style is really easy to understand as well. I highly recommend taking a class with him.

Good prof, but I think people found his course fair or easy because a large number of students were upper years taking a 1st year course. For first years, this could get quite rough if you fall behind. -A first year student

You could really tell this teacher was passionate about his field and teachings, as it showed in his lectures. Always clear, answered questions, and made fair midterm/final. Lots of memorizing in the course, so you need to keep up with that, but Neufeld makes it easier to remember and understand.

Awesome prof. He really loves what he does. One of my fav profs at UW. Wish there were more like him. Does a great job of making the course interesting and intriguing. Tests are very fair if you study. Stuff comes from notes and class, so I would recommend attending class and taking notes and memorizing those to do well(90+)

Not just my favourite professor, but the best teacher I have ever had. Talk about a genuinely nice, humble yet brilliant guy who cares about the students, and does everything he can to make his lectures enjoyable and the content clear. I did not get a great mark in this class but the things I learned, I will never forget. He is THAT good.

THE best prof I've had so far in my academic years. He's so enthusiastic about what he does and goes through the trouble of doing demos. He also plays movies on Fridays after a lecture and most people actually stick around to watch those. I hope I have him as a prof again!

He is really passionate about what he does. If you ask him a question and if he's not sure, he looks it up and e-mails everyone about it. I took it first year.

Amazing Prof!

Great prof, very fair and clear about the subject. Clicker questions in class were a lot harder than the questions on the midterm so don't fret! He clearly knows his stuff and makes the course interesting. Approachable and all around nice guy! There is quite a bit of info you need to know, so going to class really helps clear up misconceptions!

Best prof at UW. Really cares about students and wants you to do well. Really fair and made the course interesting. Not hard if you study. Recommend reading textbook for clarifications too.

Easily one of the best professors I've had at Waterloo. His notes are crystal clear, his teaching style is solid, and he incorporates so many extra things (clickers, articles, etc) to make the course interesting. Take this course with him if you can!

Hands down best prof I have ever had. Coming from an upper year student, I have seen my fair share of profs. You will not find a better one. Extremely fair, knowledgable to a degree far beyond what he teaches, approachable and teaches with an impeccable clarity.

Great prof. Really cares about his students and tries to make sure people get things by using clickers. His exam/midterm is fair - nothing really meant to trick you like other bio courses. There is a lot of material to cover, so don't fall behind. Make a chart to memorise all the bacteria at the end, it's really helpful.

Not sure why he is rated so high. He is a great lecturer however, the structure of the class is pure testing, 35% midterm and 65% exam. Material covered in class would about 5 mins worth and then require 3 hours of reading and understanding on just that topic. Questions on tests were based on textbook rather than lecture.

Dr. Neufeld was my favourite prof for first year. His teaching is impeccable: clear, concise and interesting. Despite the material appearing daunting, he made it seem easy. His tests, unlike other biology courses, actually test your knowledge of the subject matter, rather than your ability to decipher the English of the question.

Very good prof, understands topics very well, however, this course has lot of material to study, definitely not easy!

Course material may not be interesting to everyone but the prof is great and made the class worth it, very helpful and made class fun. plus movie fridays are always good!

I went into 140 with 1 goal in mind: not to fail the biggest exam (worth 65% of my final grade) I would ever write at UW. I came out of 140 having accomplished much more than the latter: I gained an interest in microbiology, and had the privilege of being taught by the 'creme de la creme' of biology professors at UW. I take my hat off to you JDN.

Amazing prof! that this course with him or dont take it at all. I changed all my career goals towards microbiology after this course. It is a difficult class but attending lectures is extremely helpful even thought he says alot of what is in the textbook. He makes lectures very interesting. Would love to take anything he teaches!

I have never enjoyed microbio, but this guy absolutely loves it and tried his best to get us interested. I did sleep through most lectures but he spiced them up and was very passionate. He's also very friendly and a great person in general, and I feel bad I wasn't more interested.

He's an amazing prof. Although I hated his class, it was because of the boring material we had to learn. He was the only reason I would go to attend lectures. He's good a what he does and is definitely a prof you'd want.

I really don't like Microbiology, but Neufeld was great at holding the interest of his students. If you have the option to take him, do it!

BEST PROF IN BIO - if not the best prof in uni. Interesting, fun (funny!) and the best demonstrations ever. Make sure you pay attention though, his exam is strictly off his lectures. No need for textbook, EXTREMELY fair exams - don't slack with the study though. Know your nitrogen and methanogen microbes well! Long live Darth Grader!

SO GOOD. evaluations are NOT hard as long as you go through the notes carefully, see what parts he emphasized the most and supplement every diagram with textbook readings. You'll be fine! go to his lectures, he really is so interesting and such a character :)

I LOVEEEEE THIS GUYYY! he is the most passionate and most interesting prof I've ever had! He is very helpful and he honestly loves what he does. No one misses a lecture in his class cause they love him so much!

Made every lecture engaging and fun and you can tell that he put in immense amount of preparation before the lectures to make sure they are as informative and interesting as possible. BTW he is being nominated for the Excellence in Science Teaching Award and he has every right to win and be recognized.

One of the best biology professors I have had to this date! He has an infectious passion for microbiology and shows it. He takes the time to review midterm and final statistics, and eliminates or modifies faulty questions. He definitely tries to keep his students engaged and also makes a great deal about course evaluations for future improvement.

Very very interesting prof. Tries his best to entertain everyone while teaching the material. One of the best profs you can get in uni. His exam questions are kinda tricky though but the class average is always relatively high. I guess people just started studying because of him.

You cannot get a better professor than this. His infectious passion for microbiology made the course 10x more interesting, and it definitely shows in his lectures. He's also very helpful, kind, and goes the extra mile to help you see microbiology in the real world through relevant news articles and cool videos. Take his class, you won't regret it!

Honestly, I was having a rough time with university in general and this prof was so excellent in teaching, encouraging learning and being inspirational that it restored my faith in my own abilities. From the dating advice segments to the minion costume to every tiny fact about microbiology, you could see his passion for the subject and teaching.

Hands down THE MOST AMAZING PROF EVER. Not going to lie, I'm not a morning person so I usually end up 'missing' most of my morning classes. This is the first class I have ever made an effort to get up and go to! Dr. Neufeld's lectures are brilliant & his passion for microbiology and teaching are evident every morning. If you study you will ace it!

Josh is the best professor at UW, it's as simple as that. He's inspired me towards a career in micriobiology. He cares about his students, always listens to feedback, responds to emails within minutes, and gives a fun interactive experience. His lecturing ability is flawless, hilarious and passionate. Never been more excited for an 8:30 class ever.

One of the most engaging profs at Waterloo. The content of the course could be a little dry at times, but Dr. Neufeld really helped to keep things interesting and made me want to come to class.

Dr. Neufeld is hands down my most favorite prof at UW. He goes out of his way to make sure every student is following along or atleast interested in what he's saying. He has many in-class demonstrations and replies to emails swiftly. His midterms and tests were very fair and he even removed questions that majority did poorly on to make it fair!

Great prof, really friendly and will answer any questions you have. Spices up lectures with demonstrations, and the exams were fairly straight forward.

One of my favourite profs! Love his teaching style, lectures are fun to attend and easy to follow. He posts lecture podcasts which is always a bonus. However your final grade is based off of 1 midterm worth 35% and a final worth 65%, wished there was another midterm or quick easy assignments for extra marks.

For a professor teaching a course taken by 800 students, he puts a lot of effort into making sure everyone understands. Awesome prof.

Neufeld had an unreal class. He's by far the best prof I've had at UW, lectures are always interesting with demos and jokes and whatnot. Only one midterm (35%) and final (65%), so if you don't do well on the midterm it's hard to make up for it. But Neufeld is a gem for sure, makes the class worth it.

JOSH NEUFELD IS THE GREATEST PROFESSOR EVER. ANYWHERE. HANDS DOWN. PERIOD. his passion for microbio is SO clear and he injects this enthusiasm into the class. all lectures are recorded so it is very easy to catch up if you miss any. the professor is a gem but the content can get overwhelming & there are only two assessments (midterm and final) :(

REal cool prof, real funny and good at explaining concepts and microbiology stuff! He is the first teacher in which made me want to go to class because he is very engaging and passionate. If all teachers were like him then the world would be a better place

It literally doesn't get better than Mr. Josh Neufield. Super caring, sweet and funny. Really really cares about his students. Puts in a ridiculous amount of effort by uploading videocasts, podcasts, lecture notes and extra notes online. Plus he dressed up as Bob Ross for Halloween. Whats not to like?

He is the best prof in Waterloo, on my first year he made me believe in Biology and is the main reason why I didn't switch programs. His lectures are an adventure, he is funny, caring and fair when grading tests, to the point of voiding questions if a high percentage messed up.

Lectures are always a blast, does awesome demonstrations. He plays intro and outro music to set the scene and starts his lectures with photos students sent in. Make micro-interesting and definitely easy to pay attention to!! WOULD RECOMMEND HIS CLASS

Absolutely hilarious, lectures were very enjoyable!

As a non-biology major with a terrible memory, this course nearly led to my downfall. The tests comprised two midterms (25% each) and a final (50%), all multiple-choice. The professor is incredible, making his lectures as entertaining as possible. He's a great professor, but the course is challenging for those who struggle with memorization.

Best professor you will ever have, try not to miss a lecture just because theyre so fun...you will never know what this man will do when you come to lecture. If you need to he records all lectures as both a video and in podcast formats.

He is an amazing professor who has a very great way of teaching by showing things physically, which helped to get the information engraved in my memory.

Truly one of my favourite professors, if not teachers, of all time. All lectures were so engaging and he did many demos throughout the course which were funny and very helpful. The amount of work is fair if you work hard, and he is always willing to help out with any questions you may have. Take this course if you can.
