At first he seems a bit weird, and you'll probably have a hard time adjusting to his style. However, if u follow his instructions to the letter and dig deep inside your head and heart for the assignments, you will do fine. He's very clear about what u need to do and he'll give you feedback in person or via email. U'll learn a lot, so hang in there!
If you want an easy A, do not take this class.
Josh is a very strange man, but he means well. He is on a soapbox the entire class, and you will learn to always agree with him if you want to do well. He is not an easy professor, and is subjective and opinionated. If you enjoy a challenging your patience and tolerance he is your guy, otherwise it is not worth the headache.
Always talks never says anythingtries to teach life lessons through what he thinks is clever mind games but eryone knows what hes trying to do.its impossible to pass with an A you dont get full participation grade unless u raise yer hand 100% of the time.he failed a girl for not numbering her pages for an essay.narcissist who wants drones of himslf
One of the best professors I've ever had. Very helpful. Knows Communication inside and out. A great motivational speaker and a great person to teach you Speech. You will only do 2-3 presentations in this class. The bulk is learning communication as a whole and what it means between us as people. Made it VERY interesting. Will take a course again.
Do not take this class! Its the worst class I have ever taken.
This guy is impossible. Agree with what was said about him being on his soap box. He is king while you are in his class. He is not very clear. If you do not follow EXACTLY what he says to do for a an assignment he will give you a poor grade, even if your one word off. This class is more therapy than communications.
josh is a cool guy!If you are prepared to listen and learn this a great class.
long story short, if you want to pass this class, you have to follow directions EXACTLY how he has them otherwise you get marked down. Ask questions if you want to pass, and if you are going to be out, email him ahead of time and let him know. Also talk to him during his office hours, he's actually pretty cool outside of class
While it's true that Josh is opinionated, his main goal is to teach. In this, I felt that he has been successful. He communicates precisely what it is that he wants, and the penalties accrued are only due to negligence in following his directions. He's not an easy A, but if you follow his directions to the letter, you can walk with a good grade.
He's a good teacher overall. He will not care about you if you don't care. Easy A if you follow EVERY LITTLE BIT of instructions. Smallest error will result in loss of points. To avoid that listen to him. He is EXTRA clear with directions and is VERY fair with grading. He is also very outspoken so if you get offended easily DO NOT take his class.
Josh is a very helpful teacher. Everything is on his time however. If you have a problem following directions and are a selective listening then this professor is not for you. However there is no homework and very few assignments. Josh is a pretty cool dude in and outside the classroom.
He is a tough professor but helpful. Though he seems very strict and a bit scary, he actually tries to help you somehow. At times he gets very frustrating especially when he is very picky to details. It is not an easy A in his class. His speech time limits are significantly lower. If you want a challenging class then take CST 110 with Josh.
GREAT PROFESSOR IF YOU FOLLOW INSTRUCTION THEN YOU WILL BE FINE
Josh is a very good professor. You will get a good grade as long as you try and listen. You should also participate in class to get points. He makes the class very interesting and fun. I would take this course over again if I had the time.
Josh is one of the best professors I have ever had! If you really want to learn something then take this class. It is not an easy A at all though. You have to follow directions perfectly and be exremely thorough to get an A. Go to his office hours!!! He will give you more points if you go to his office hours and show you are trying!
Josh is a very clear, very fair teacher. He has high expectations, but if you accept his offer to pre- grade in the beginning, it will make a huge difference. You will not get an easy A from Josh, but you will not be bored in his class either!
Josh is very sarcastic, get ready. He is VERY literal, so take him that way. If you can handle sarcasm, and take him for what he says (VERY LITERAL), you will be fine. He did his job, and gave plenty of opportunities to succeed. It was a pretty easy A.
this guy is impossible to understand. I was failing his class and so I dropped.
Loved him! He's very sarcastic & demanding but you walk away from the class feeling like you learned something not just for a credit but an actual life lesson. He has some quirks you have to just bear with, but I highly recommend him.
Josh has a way of doing things that will make your life hard. He believes 90% of communication problems are caused by ineffective listening. So he spends the whole semester nitpicking to make sure you listen to his every word. For example he gave me a zero for writing after listening to this speech instead of writing after listening to my speech..
Excellent teaching style. Hard but fair. Lectures were very interesting never boring. Would take another class with him.
Tough teacher, a lot of the good ratings on here are from Josh asking his students to provide him good ratings. I finished with a B, but Josh is a tough teacher who doesn't like giving out A's. I never missed any day or assignment, he is just a tough grader.
Quite a fabulous professor, always helpful, and really evokes deep thinking from his students. Attendance was mandatory, however, I enrolled during the summer, and classes were different than the assigned book readings which made every class interesting!
one of my favorite teachers ever. passing his class is not hard, it just involves following directions at all times. i promise you will learn a lot if you keep an open mind and follow instructions. some of the things taught in class can actually help in real life, even if they seem corny at first. He will be obnoxious but it comes with the class.
Hard class, you really have to work hard and read every freaking detail and listen to every class. Dont ever miss a s.. and he is way to freaking literal and sarcastic. it drove me crazy. Although he helped a lot with the whole public speaking aspect of it.
Josh is a very tough grader. You must do things EXACTLY how he wants them and he will dock points for the most simple mistakes! He does make the class a little more interesting but he is very strange and harsh. He encourages participation but when you do he shoots you down with harsh remarks. I would not reccomend him however some people like him.
Save yourself and your GPA by taking another professor's CST course. I am a student that has never missed a class...until this one. Eventually I got so annoyed with this guy that I missed as many days as possible without failing. His grading is impossible, I have never tried so hard and gotten so many points deducted. He should be fired!
let me just explain to you all about Josh. this man should be fired. His gradings are way to harsh and he has way to high of expectations for his students.I don't understand this man.He treats you like youre still in high school.you cant chew gum and if you move an inch,he will stare at you in front of the whole class until your done.Ridiculous.
Take this class! I know a lot of people complain but you can actually learn a lot of things that you can use in your personal life and professional if you drop your ego and just listen. but yes follow the Rubric EXACTLY. It is a lesson that he is trying to teach you when he grades so harsh. not hard work just listen
Well first off, if you can't get used to calling him my his first name only, Josh, then just drop now! The beginning of the semester was rough and I even thought about dropping because he is so particular & sometimes harsh, but I stayed in and it got so much easier- following instructions to the "T" is all you need to do.
Just know that he will deduct points from your work for the most ridiculous reasons. He should stick to writing books (which probably aren't that good) and stay out of the classroom.
First let me say this: He is extremely condescending, has a huge ego, and will talk down to you. Second, this class isn't that hard. Attendance is mandatory for a decent grade, and papers are graded a bit harshly, but otherwise it's nothing to be intimidated about.
This class is a great way to get comfortable with talking in front of people. Josh is expects a lot but he makes it very clear what he wants so that you can succeed in his class. He is definitly the best professor to take if you are planning on taking CST 110.
Josh is a phenomenol teacher and at the end of the semester you will realize that you too are an awesome teacher. His class is tough. You have to pay close attention to directions. READ your syllabus and re-read your directions. You learn a lot. You build a bond with the people in your class. It is truly an experience. I loved my experience.
Best professor I have ever had. I hated public speaking but after this class I'm motivated to pursue a degree in communications. Really easy as long as you do what's expected.
Do not make the mistake of taking CST 229 with this professor, it will be a decision you will regret. He is one of the most irrational teachers I have ever met in my life. He has good perspective I will give him that. He needs to re-evaluate his teaching methods. I got a B but it took more effort than any class I have ever taken. Most students drop
Extremely hard professor. You do learn a lot about Intercultural Communication in this class however. The 5-6 essays must be atleast 4 pages to receive a decent grade. The chapter reactions tend to have to be around 2-3 pages for a good grade as well. Deducts points for grammar in your paper. I learned a lot in class, but I didnt enjoy it with josh
This guy is ridiculously sarcastic. He takes it to the point where it becomes so annoying. Takes points of for the most stupid reasons. I think his class was interesting at times, but it was annoying when he was sarcastic. Following his instructions was pain in the ass because he is particular about stupid thins.
This guy is great! He is hilarious! Be prepared though, he is an extremely harsh grader, and is ultra strict that you follow ALL his directions, ALL that we talked about in class, and use well written. Still, he met with me personally after class to help me go from a D to a B. Gave me advice on getting along with my parents when I needed it!
One of the best professors I've ever had.
I recommend taking this class if you want to be challenge. Josh is a very literal teacher so you have to follow his directions exactly. At the beginning of the semester you'll probably dislike him but you'll learn to live him. Do all the WORK EVEN THOUGH IT SEEMS POINTLESS. See him during office hours for help. You gain a lot of new skills.
Great professor! He's strict with his grading, very strict. However they are not hard rules to follow. He tells you HOW to get an A in the class. He loves this subject and you can tell. He just doesn't teach you film he tells it like a story. You can tell he has been through stuff but is very positive, funny, and helpful. Take him I have no regrets
Josh is far and away my favorite professor at NOVA. Yes, his grading is STRICT- ridiculously so. BUT he tells you exactly how to earn an A (and believe me, it's EARNED) just make sure you follow directions completely! He tells good stories and relates everything to the real world. There's no reason you won't get a good grade if you put in the work!
Out of all my years as a student this was the worst class I have taken and the professor is to blame. With easy to understand content this professor made the class extremely difficult with his unfair grading style and sarcastic personality. I do not recommend this course to anyone.
?He was a great professor! Teaches you, not only communication skills, but some life lessons as well. His grading is very harsh, but it only teaches you that you must always follow directions directly as they are described. You must put your full and complete effort to get a good grade, but the hard work is worth it. Loved it!
Josh is a dynamic speaker, with great interest & passion in the subject. However, he would rather demonstrate his dominance than to actually teach the subject directly. Summed up, his lectures are 90% sarcasm/ posturing and 10% actual teaching. Odd considering the topic of the class. Time and money are better spent elsewhere.
Completed all of my assignments through 3 weeks and had a 45%. I'm a 3.8 GPA student. Biggest piece of advice is do a quick search online PRIOR to signing up for his class to see what you're in for. Nit-picky to a fault which makes a subject that I was really looking forward to frustrating.
I'm a 3.5 GPA student, and yet I simply cannot excel in this course taught by him. He is pretentious and arrogant in his demeanor and he expects so much out of his students that it's unbelievable. No student should have to go through that. My goodness. Please,do yourself a favor, spare yourself the stress and agony, and stay far away from this man.
Josh is incredibly intelligent and interesting. He's challenging, too, but he's fair. He writes clear instructions for each assignment: if you follow them, you will do well. You have to work hard and think a lot, too, but that's what college is for. If you do these things, Josh will go out of his way to help you succeed. Take this class.
I have a 3.5 GPA and consider myself to be a bright student, but yet was entirely unable to excel in this class. Josh is rude and argumentative, very arrogant and does not take the time to answer questions. If he does, he completely diminishes your self esteem for even asking. Avoid if you can, or you're in for a stressful semester.
Josh was incredibly frustrating. I regret not dropping the class when I had the chance. He is hardest grader I've ever had and will frustrate you all semester long. He offers little/no advice when you don't earn full credit for your work. Turned in all of my completed assignments on time and struggled to get a B. Don't take this class with him.
Josh makes the class harder than it needs to be. I tried to do everything right and I still didn't get an A. You have to email him back and fourth to get a straight answer out of him. He didn't reply to an email about homework because I didn't sign my name on the bottom of the message. It wasn't terrible, I would take a class with him again.
Josh is a professor that is not for everyone with that being said he is very different than every professor I've had. He is intimidating but a great teacher too. He is very clear, and takes everything literal. If you just follow the directions, (which can be a lot) attend his class, do well on his homework you should be fine. Hes a great professor
Josh is one of the most interesting teachers I've ever had and one of the worst. The material and his stories are awesome, but his draconian guidelines ruins everything good about the class. Instead of trying to learn, you spend your time thinking about how to meet his overly strict rules. Skip a line or forget a page num, automatic 0 on the paper.
This man's class is all about following instructions, which may sound easy, but he is very, very literal. Meaning if he says your name is to be written at the top of a page, there had better not be anything written above it. It's all semantics with him. He's an easy A as long as you can follow instructions to the T, but he is VERY condescending.
First off, you HAVE to call him Josh. Just Josh. The very first assignment was making a name tag for your desk and was worth ten points. Not surprisingly, no one got above about a 3 . He makes every assignment 10x harder than it should be. He acts like he is a philosopher and his lectures make no sense. Avoid him if you want anything above a C
Great professor and person. He helps you if you ask for it. Homework must be done by the due date. He is very serious when it comes to assignments and instructions. I felt that if you do not go to class and participate, you will not pass the class. The overall class has a great meaning; however, it has too many instructions for each assignment.
Hands down my favorite class so far. You definitely earn your grade, but it's well worth it. As long as you follow the assignment instructions, show up, and actively participate, you'll be totally fine.
Josh seemed like a great teacher at first he was very straight forward. Then he began being kind of rude and not understanding. He'd call people out if they had to leave to use the restroom he would put people on the spot. I had to leave class to once and he was so rude when I came back. I've never met such a rude professor in my life.
This teacher is very interesting. I enjoyed going to his class but he has some very unusual rules. Word of advice, do not leave his class in the middle of a discussion, it will be very awkward. He gives really good feedback but he isn't afraid to criticize your work. Overall i liked this professor, but i wouldn't take his class again.
DROP HIS CLASS BEFORE IT'S TO LATE. Josh is the meanest teacher I've ever had to deal with. He belittles you like it's his job. The 3rd class of the semester right as class was starting he was handing back papers, some students forgot to put their name on them so he ripped them up in front of the class and threw them in the trash. Who does that?
An abysmal teacher who should lose his job. He has classic small genital syndrome. His obnoxious egomaniac style is classic of individuals who have zippo respect from students and teachers alike. I have never a met a teacher who is more unlikeable or more of a disappointment. He tries hard to belittle and embarrass at every opportunity. AVOID!
I had him last year and i would say I had a little hard time but not really. He is very clear on what he wants in the assignments. If you cannot follow directions, this class is not for you!! its not a hard class at all! people just say mean things about him bc they didn't follow directions. Its their fault. Class is fun and interesting you go.
First thing, if you want an easy A, without doing anything, this is not the class for you. Drop immediately if that is your mindset. If you actually want to learn about communication and the importance of it, Josh Pachter can help expand your knowledge in the subject. He is unlike any teacher you probably had. You are in for an experience.
He should go easier on his students on the final exam. Sometimes the answer to the question "How" is vague. Not always specific.
Wanted to hate more but was informed I have 0 characters left. He is overly fastidious on everything, including a hilariously impossible name tag that everyone redid and somehow still failed. Doesn't get much worse than your cleaning lady laughingsmiling at your grown man self's colorful name tag that you failed like everyone else ever to do it.
AWESOME, SPIRITUAL, SMART guy! His class is unlike any you've ever taken before; BUT he's a strict grader & directions on HW are VERY specific. It's difficult to not mess up sometimes. However, it's still passable; hard but fun. If ya want a fun challenge, take him(; but if you're just looking for credit, take regular CST:intro to communication!
Pedantic, overly meticulous, and lectures in circles wasting an entire class to reach a point that could have been found within the first thirty minutes.
Very rude. Do NOT take him, you'll regret it!!!
TL;DR- you'll either love him or hate him. I loved him! If you want an easy A, this is NOT the instructor for you. But if you want an inspiring and passionate teacher, DEFINITELY consider him. He has no tolerance for bull-, and gives unclear instruction at times, but he is always there to help steer you in the right direction. Expect quirkiness.
Josh is a decent person, but is very meticulous; he takes a whole lot of time to get to a single point. He may seem rude, but he does care about how you do in the class and is pretty understanding. If you do take this class: The SYLLABUS IS YOUR BFF, CAREFULLY READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, & UTILIZE HIS OFFICE HOURS!
Professor Patcher will teach you to be patient. He speaks slowly, very sarcastic, and is a strict grader. Follow all of his instructions and you should be fine. On the nametag he will give you a low grade at first in order to get you to try harder and redo it. Take advantage of the extra credit and office hours.
This is the worst class I've ever taken and the worst professor I have had. He was extremely rude and condescending to his students. This is supposed to be a class on interpersonal communication but don't try to add anything to the discussion in class as he will be very upset. A complete waste of time with many kindergarten level projects.
I cant fit all my opinion on here, but First of all he wants to be called josh, second he only responds to emails if its set up his way, he gives very vague instructions and doesnt ever clerify or repeat them in an understandable way. He is very arrogant and one of the worst professors I ever had. I'd rather not take this class again.
We are given an assignment about creating a nametag and everyone didnt meet the expectations if the instructir even on the second time. He doesn't offer clear help to students even during his office hours, Its extremely rare to get anything above a C- in this class. I would not take this class again and this professor should find work elsewhere.
Seriously. Just take Public Speaking. So many asinine rules. This man has convinced me that Communications is a worthless major.
Also if you say 1 word in class he tells you in an email that he will have the dean remove you from his class
His instructions and expectations are very precise, so you have to be careful, right down to how you word your sentences. It's a challenge, but as with all of his class activities and assignments, you can get a lot out of it if you want to. Just watch your phrasing, and keep an open mind. He can be abrasive, but his lectures are amazing.
Super arrogant and inanely hard grader. Want to complain about how he gave you a low grade for seven hours of work? You'll get one of these: "This is a college level class, I expect you to write at a college level." When in reality there are no prerequisites for the class... If you step out of line he will do anything to get you out. Snake.
First of all he wants to be called Josh. I was only in this class the first day. He hates the sound of zippers, so you have to unzip your backpack before entering, you have to literally show him turning off your phone, and most of all, he said in class, he wants a good review on this website.
You're going to struggle through it but you'll end up taking a lot out of this class. He is a pretty great teacher. While a lot of things Josh does may seem a little crazy to you he knows what he's doing. He pushes you to think outside the box. Also his extra credit assignment helped me become friends with basically my entire class.
If I actually learned anything it was from reading the textbook (which he doesn't use at all) or just from talking to my friends about how terrible the class was. There is an absurd amount of emphasis on arts and crafts projects, and the prettiness matters. Extremely precise directions given, if you don't follow them you are guaranteed to fail.
Arrogant, disrespectful, and not particularly well-studied: the perfect storm for a terrible professor. Believes that pupils must be "tricked" into learning. Acts in a petty manner and seems to enjoy correcting students mid-sentence to prove his intelligence. Undoubtedly the worst professor with whom I have ever had the displeasure of dealing .
At first I hated Josh (he prefers his first name when you call yall to him), but I Began to know him better not to mention he really cares about his students and he puts effort of help you need to pass his class! Not to mention I love his class because hes entertaining and so funny! when Im there I never Zone out like other classes
Josh is a very interesting prof, seems smart, rather funny, but unnecessarily draconic with directions while he has the right to be. He's not giving you an easy A, but it was repeated gut-punches in point losses. Course both fun and stress-inducing, I would be wary and read, read, READ the directions if you're taking him. You might like him.
I always looked forward to his lectures because I have always been interested in the subject of film and animation. He gives memorable and logical advice to his students, especially during his office hours. Therefore, I love Josh. He is also a very funny man, who does excellent lectures. Just be sure to read the syllabus and follow his directions.
While I do get where others are coming from, he is still a delightful human-being to me. He is also funny during his lectures and offers great words of wisdom during his office hours.
Although his directions are precise and he is strict, he is still willing to help. Plus, he also gives funny, amazing, and overall inspirational lectures. He may come across as cold at times, but Im sure there is a warm heart underneath. Plus, he is just trying to push his students in the right direction with his grading method. Follow directions.
Pachter switched out with our original teacher halfway through this course. He yelled at a girl in an extremely rude manner on the first day for chewing gum, without lettin us know his specific class expectations. I havent found him to be too hard of a grader. I believe he does care greatly for his students, but doesnt show it in a good way.
Terrible professor. Thinks he's a big deal but he's not. Needs more humility. Gives very bad feedback on graded assignments.
If you've been cruising in classes, hoping to not be called out for not putting in effort... well ha. You will have to put in effort, a good deal of it, but it's really worth it. The class should be labeled "life lessons." You will genuinely learn important things, so if you can deal with being told everything you know is wrong, TAKE THIS ONE.
love strict teachers cause they actually teach for student benefits, but he is a different kind of human. got a C and i'm an A student loved to be in communication, but he made me hate it. simply don't take him
Loved Josh so much that when I needed an elective I looked up what other classes he taught & specifically chose one of them. Very picky grader, but his care for his students and class is obvious. Amazing speaker & quirky guy. Most valuable class I ever took. I hope that he's still going to be teaching in several years so that I can take it again.
In my class, there were a lot of students who had trouble warming up to Josh. Yes, he requires you to show effort in his class and participate. He's not perfect but I met amazing people in his class and made connections that I've never been able to do in any other class. Josh is considered one of my favorite teachers I have met. Follow directions!
Gives grades like hes paying for it. This teacher is horrible. I can never about him. He is a nightmare
In the beginning, Josh might seem strict but he also cares. He can be generous, especially in the first half of the semester, he gives class participation credit generously. In order to get points, class participation is important. Follow instructions and turn in work on time will help to pass the class easily.
Of all the teachers and professors I have had in my life, none have been as exemplary as Josh. Josh is the model teacher. He is masterful at the subjects he teaches and if you are willing to put in the effort his classes can be life changing. He is extremely strict but also extremely fair. He will detail all his expectations clearly. No easy grades
His class is pretty difficult. Therefore, you must read the directions VERY carefully. Plus, it is recommended that you use his office hours. Although I got a mediocre grade in his class, I enjoyed the class. Granted, he can be blunt and curt (especially when it comes to his grading style and how he answers emails), but he is still a wonderful man.
Professor Pachter is unique and interesting. His lectures are always fun and easy to follow. He gives lots of instructions so his assignments are easy to complete and it's easy to get an A because you know exactly what he wants you to do. Highly recommend.
I took this class during the Fall semester of 2017, back when it was still called ART 150. Even though I did not get a good grade, I still enjoyed the class and Josh himself, though a little curt and frank, is a great guy once you get to know him. However, my only gripes are his grading style and the pointless Nametag Challeneg/Assignment.
His grading did not follow his syllabus and was completely subjective. It was difficult to understand and he purposely set the students up to fail on their first class project, forcing them to take the one redo he gives the students per semester.
This teacher is extremely difficult. He purposely fails his students for the fist project and makes them use their one assignment redo that he gives to the students each semester. This teaches grading is completely subjective and does not follow what he states is his grading in his syllabus. I highly recommend avoiding this teacher.
Very tough teacher. I would highly recommend seeing him outside class during office hours. Josh is very straightforward and is without a doubt my favorite professor taken at NOVA. I took his class last year and I still use the content he taught us every day. Do yourself a favor and take this course if you can spare the time commitment. Worth it.
Josh is an incredible professor! His class has taught me things that have made all of my future classes much easier. At the beginning of the semester, you'll probably think he's a pain in the butt and terrible. BUT he acts the way he does for a reason. By the end of the semester you'll love him and you'll have improved your communication skills.
the instructor is a harsh grader, even if he is asking for college-level writing. the student should be invested in the course because this is not an 'easy' A to receive. also, you should get a printer of your own because he is going to ask you to kill trees and waste paper that could be used for something else.
Absolutely horrible. His grading is one of the toughest I have ever had. Every class could be taught in 45 minutes or less but he likes to over explain and draw things out. Its extremely frustrating. There is no words to describe this man. Just suck it up and follow instructions exactly. Would never take again. So annoying.
This is the worst professor I have ever had in my life. The class is so stressful ,if you have any form of anxiety dont even try it. He is always trying to make homework more difficult than it should be. Every subject covered is a glass of stress. Please if you love yourself dont try it.
I do not mind a strict professor because everyone is entitled to their own style, however this professor can be extremely disrespectful. It is not about how much you learn in this class, its simply about things being done one, hard concrete way. This class will have you stressed and anxious over spelling your name(literally).
I get if professors want to do things a specific way, but this professor takes it to another level. Completely rude and disrespectful, not to mention unapproachable. Literally flips out over the sight of any piece of technology and acts unprofessional often enough. Unless you have no other choice, I HIGHLY recommend you DO NOT TAKE HIM! PLEASE!
Josh is overall a good professor but that was not my impression during the first few classes. He tries to "scare" off students in the beginning of the semester to lower the class enrollment number to one he finds acceptable. He is a tough grader and you must follow his rules to perfection or he may not allow you to submit an assignment.
I am not one to judge professors, because they are here to help their students. This was the one teacher that was the exception. I have the same respect for him as I do of a tissue paper. Modern day Nazi that will do anything to feel superior to his students and enjoys seeing students cry because of his class. Delusional and a diabolical human.
So for the first two weeks yes it was my fault for not turning in my homework on time, but in week 5 when everyone was doing the homework he started attacking me because I didn't do it right and had to write a 5 full sentence but when everyone else didn't do theirs correctly he only gave them one sentence which it was unfair.
He won't hesitate to give you a "0" for not following the instructions in a hard, laser-like way.
You could ace all your assignments and still receive a low letter grade if you don't participate. The participation scale is unfair if you ask me. If I write more than ten times in a discussion board a week, how do I receive a 1.5 out of 10 for participation? He is too picky on email receipts and requires English level writing at all times.
There's strict professors and then there's this guy on his own level. I can't even go into detail on everything he does because I only have so many characters. He's the toughest grader I've ever had, even if you post 10 times a week like he requires he'll still give you an F for class participation. If you want a fair grade, Don't take him.
Pachter is probably the worst professor I've ever had in my college journey. I've never seen a professor treat his students with such attitude and disrespect for such small mistakes then demand good work & participation. It doesn't kill you to be nice ... He is the cause of deforestation w/ the amount of papers/printing he gives & makes you print.
The only good thing about this professor is that he doesn't give that much homework, but his grading is very bad and unfair, and the thing is he would not hesitate to give you an F if it doesn't match or what he wants on the paper, and his grading on assignments are trash he wants you to "think deeper" even if you write college-level and stay away.
This person grading on participation grade is extremely flawed, and he probably isn't even counting them even if you post ten times a week on weekdays which says on his syllabus flawed professor.
This class shouldve been fairly simple and it was not at all. He demands a lot and is extra about following instructions, down to formatting numbers correctly! He is also very rude and has some sort of god complex (check out his personal website lol). No cap every time he responds to a student, he mentions HIS accomplishments
This man is someone who you can't understand, but if you listen to his directions EXACTlY as it says you will pass, but don't misread them you will fail the class. Also, if you call him other than Josh he will flip.
Josh also admitted that he made six accounts just to rate himself to be in a higher score, so many of the good rates are falsified, and DONT take him unless you want your GPA squashed like a chicken.
This course might be the worst course I've taken so far in college. Josh is simply a horrible and strict grader. He can be apathetic at times, and also has an attitude, which in my opinion, are the worst two qualities an educator can possess. Please do not take his course. Absolutely awful instructor.
Josh was a confusing professor. Participation is key to the class, but you need to make sure your participation is the way he wants it. He has an interesting way of grading and certain expectations for the class. If you do not email with the proper subject title he will not read it. Be careful in this class if you have to take it.
This professor is downright crazy in the head. DO NOT take this class! Since his class is a joke he takes it to extreme levels to empower himself. Might very well be the worst professor at NOVA.
Craziest professor I've ever had stay away, you need to take participation in his own way seriously if you want to pass this class, I could've gotten A if it wasen't for his participate flawed grades.
The lectures arent the worst but man, is this guy off his rocker. Josh will attack you if you dont fall in line with his protocols and weird rules. This might be the most unclear Ive ever seen a grading system for a class. If you think youre writing on a college level guess again. His multiple point system has zero consistency. PLEASE STAY AWAY
Hes terrible. Has an attitude problem, lacks empathy, quite literally wrote this is pathetic on one of my assignments. Doesnt respond to emails if there is a small error in the subject line. I dont think its that hes a bad teacher, but just an unlikable person overall. Do not recommend. Id rate him a zero if I could. I wish I read reviews 1st
This is my first time making a review on professors, and I should've reviewed this site before taking his class, and boy I regret it real bad he prefers to be called Josh, but not professor Josh? But what's worse is that he forces us to sign at the end of the email if you don't get credit for hours of work, and participation is a huge point to clas
CST 126 with Josh is quite the experience. I initially despised the class and the professor but as it continued on I began to realize how helpful the class actually was. The things I learned in this class and from Josh continue to help me long after I have completed the class, I have even been tempted to go back and take it again for the experience
He sounded like a fun guy in the beginning, but later he becomes more toxic as you get to know who he really is. He only does assignments using email, but never canvas. You are required to sign your name in the end, but also call him Josh and nothing else. Do not take him if you are not a writer, he is really strict about your writing skills.
Loved him! Josh can be overwhelming at first, but stick it out - it's well worth it. He's passionate about film, so his lectures are fascinating and story-oriented. His "textbook" is a small, engaging book written by an experienced director. Be prepared to write thoughtfully and write a lot - there's only one test, but weekly writing assignments.

If you want to be humiliated, bullied by a prof. take this class. I wish I had looked at the reviews before picking this class. Josh is by far the most difficult and rudest professor I've ever had. He was yelling at students for being late to class ON THE FIRST DAY. He got angry at a student for calling him "professor" Please just save yourself.
Please run as far as you can away from this class/teacher. The amount of work and expectations rquired to meet in order to pass has exceeded even my more difficult classes. Taking this class was my only regret I have in my life. This teacher has so many requirements in place its not even funny. Worst teacher Ive ever had in my existence
Grading criteria is unclear and often is based on a copy and paste method, Careful and double check with fellow classmates, Rude and often does not show interest in teaching, Call him, Josh, With the expectations set so high one would think the lessons learned would follow Unfortunately the lessons are leaned at borderline riddicule w/o any advice.
There will be times when you have something important to share that he will cut you off and say, "don't waste my class time" and class will have just started. He is extremely rude to his students and many people drop out because of it. His grading is too strict and sometimes doesn't make sense so be prepared to be frustrated a lot.
Strict professor. Was disrespectful to a student who was simply asking for a mask and then proceeded to teach the class without a mask two minutes later. I was asking a peer next to me for a piece of paper so I could write my nametag (per his instruction) and he turned around and yelled at us because he was busy teaching.. how to fold said nametag.
spring 2022 semester just started about 2 weeks ago and already he has lost half of his students due to withdrawal.. extremely rude and calls you out in front of everyone for the smallest mistake. please listen to these reviews. gives me 1/5 or 0/5 on all discussions even if you put in the effort. BEWARE. he needs to be fired.
this class is not meant for the weak. if you don't have thick skin good luck. he practically bullies you and makes sarcastic comments on your grades but doesn't tell you why you received that grade. not to mention he is just overall rude and has no regard for his students. takes off 10 points for the smallest mistakes. The grading curve is insane.
This professor legit made a grown woman cry in my class. This professor really asks a lot out of you for just an LVL 100 course. He got mad at me for calling him a professor, like why tf are you teaching at college and you get angry for me addressing you as a professor. He does most of his assignments on mail so don't expect that much from canvas
This semester I had the utter misfortune of taking Josh Pachter's CST 126. I can honestly come out of this saying that I've learned nothing other than how to follow directions. "Josh" as he likes to be called is a hard grader and doesn't reply to emails in a timely fashion. Over half of my class dropped before the end of the semester. Avoid Josh.
The guy is insane about attendance and had requirements of how you name yourself on zoom meetings. He also wanted to be addressed by his first name and found it so disrespectful if you addressed him as a professor. I also got docked points for not having my camera on during meetings. I made the mistake of taking him during the summer for 5 weeks.
I took his class in spring of 2018 and I still go to therapy for it. He is not shy of using intimidation or fear tactics. I could barely think straight during class because of how scared I was. Towards the end of the semester, all I wanted to do was end my life in front of his face. I don't understand why he would do this.
Hated him. He wouldn't accept my assignment once and let me get a 0 on it because it wasn't in the exact format he wanted it in. He also snaps and gets angry over very subjective reasons. Don't take him if you value yourself at all.
He wanted to be called "Josh", which just was a little strange for when addressing a professor. He's a tough grader and words things difficult to understand at times during lecture. He also brings up topics that aren't relevant or in my opinion appropriate; lecture on how the world's flat. At times, he would be disrespectful.
